The Silent Revolution of 2010...

By Diyasena

With the results of the 2010 General election published, the governing United People's Freedom alliance (UPFA) has recorded an unprecedented victory in recent election history. When the results of the two annulled electorates are announced, and the national list allocations are completed, the UPFA is expected to get a massive 144-146 seats out of 225.

Mage Mathru Bhumiya Dinewa!

Epic victory

The UPFA victory eclipses the previous record for the highest number of seats obtained by a winning party (ie, the United National Party's 125 seats in 1989) under the proportional representation (PR) system of 1978. It also debunks the myth that strong governments cannot be formed under the PR system.

The number of seats obtained by the UPFA does not reflect the full grandeur of the victory. They carried 135 of 158 electorates (similar to the 5/6 victory of UNP in 1977). Their winning percentage of 60.4%, and margin of 1.8 million (against the aggregates of all other parties), are unprecedented as well. One might complain that the turnout was comparatively low. However this was to be expected after the presidential election, and compared to other democracies in the world, 55% is by no means a low turnout. Moreover, if one looks at the results carefully, it is apparent at roughly similar numbers of government and opposition supporters stayed home on election day, compared to the Presidential Election on January 26, 2010.

The victorious UPFA

As requested by the president, the people have given the UPFA a strong Electroral Mandate, thereby ensuring 6 more years of stable rule. The leaders of the government have to realize that this is the last election they can market the war victory for votes. Other issues will take center stage in subsequent elections:

1. The economy- The government will hopefully be able to reap in the benefits of the infrastructure developments and economic growth over the next six years. The peace dividend should filter down to the masses, who richly deserve it.

2. Corruption and thuggery- The UPFA voters themselves have voted out some of the corrupt and inefficient ministers of the previous government. However, some errant characters who are locally popular have been elected. The government should rein in these MPs, and project the image of a true people's government. With a strong government, the president has the luxury of appointing a small cabinet. The choosing of suitable and efficient ministers, as well as a capable prime minister, will be very important for the future of the UPFA government.

3. The Eelam struggle- Though the armed struggle was extinguished last year, the diaspora Tamils backed by western powers still plot and scheme to divide the island. Whilst countering these threats externally, the government must strive to eliminate the root cause of the problem through ethnic integration (ie, via strategic re-colonization, increasing contact and empathy between communities, and economic development).

UNP: A toothless opposition.

The UNP hurtled towards it's worst defeat since the PR system was introduced, and is expected to win only 58-60 seats. They won only 9 electorates, reminiscent of their rout at the hands of the SLFP in 1956. If the UNP is to make a comeback, a total makeover is necessary. It is unlikely that Ranil Wickremsinghe could ever lead the UNP to victory at an election. By not electing some of his cronies (Vajira Abeywardane, Sagala Rathnayake), the UNP voters have also sent their leadership message. Moreover, the so called 'Kepuwath Kola' generation of rural UNP-er are dying out (literally) leaving only the Colombo-centric supporters. Unless new leaders such as Sajith Premadasa, or Dayasiri Jayasekara, are given priority and leadership oppotunities, Sri Lanka risks becoming a one party state.

JVP: Saving face

Many of the readers may disagree, but the JVP has to a certain degree saved-face at this election. They are likely to win 7 seats, which is far better than the 1-3 they were initially projected to win. It seems, apart from their own hardcore cadre, about 200,000 Fonseka sympathizers voted for them as well. Thus, they have saved themselves from political irrelevance for another six years. Until such time their trade and student unions are dismantled, the JVP will continue to play a role in Sri Lanka's political landscape.

ITAK/TNA : The last throw of the dice..

Without any LTTE firepower to back them up, the ITAK(TNA)'s seats in the North and East were reduced from 22 to 14. Moreover, they polled less than 50% in the Tamil heartland of Jaffna, and less than 40% in the other districts they contested. In fac,t with 4000 or so more votes, the UPFA could have wrested victory from the ITAK in the Vanni and Batticaloa districts. With the new census to be conducted in 2011, the number of seats allocated to the North is expected to drop by about 4 (Jaffna -3, Vanni- 1), whilst Battticaloa would likely lose 1 seat as well. Therefore, coupled to the moderating influence of ethnic integration in future years, the influence of TNA is likely to be further diluted in subsequent elections. Therefore, they will be hellbent in their effort to preserve their mono-ethnic fiefdom, by agitating for a federal solution. We call upon the government to frustrate their communal and separatist designs at every turn.

Conclusion

The results of this election will greatly influence the destiny of Sri Lanka in the coming years. If the government lives up to it's great potential, the Silent Revolution of 2010 will far outshine the achievements of the 1956 and 1977 electoral revolutions. Let us hope that all goes well for our motherland, and that our children one day will proudly call themselves "Dedahas Dahaye' Daruwo!"

So far I have said, "let's protect RW, he's the secret of all our success." I found him to collect all the nation in the other camp [popularity magnut with wrong pole] and the combination of traitor-comedian-fool-looser-homo gave everyone energy and inspiration to safe guard nation.

Now I change my slogan against the arsehole. "Chase the damn fool of the opposition leader". Because we are in the latter part of the MR leadership, and the worst ever politician in SL is blocking a major portion of hatching and grooming grounds of SL's future.

RW, your unintentional "National Duty" is over. Rest is peace please.

Systematic and democratic removal of top scum from the opposition and grooming of patriotic men like Sajith within UNP is essential for our nation's survival.

දේශපාලුවා said...

Good analysis. I agree with the part that you how show UNP voters have rejected RW leadership by voting out his confidents like Vajira Abe, (Taxi Abe's cousin?) Sagala R.

Not only that they showed defiance by electing people rejected by RW like Ranjith Maddumabandara.

But we need to see that this is in the rural sector, the rural masses have rejected RW leadership, but the Englsih speaking elite which control the UNP party is still with RW.

They have elected RaviK, Rosy S and many of their representatives. Its not clear whether the UNP would change course.

The rural masses signal need of change in the nationalistic direction, bu the party elites have voted for the status quo.

There might be a fight in UNP, we should support the nationalistic elements there.

I dont agree Sajith is nationalistic, his father was, but he grew up with the colombo crowd. Looks like he inherited more from this crowd than from his father.

I dont see Karu as nationalistc.

Rukman, might be.

Its amazing that there seems to be no more names in the UNP with nationalitic affinities and leadership potential.

Little diversion from the topic. But relevant to some extent as one of the five hubs planned is "Energy Hub".

Ananda - Are you into energy? (or to anyone in that field)

Petrol from Plastics

What do you make out of this project supported by the Environment Ministry? Do we have hope here?

----------
Theoretically it is possible.

Plastics mainly contain polymerized hydrocarbons, they can be monomerized and yeilding hydrocarbons we burn in petrol and gas.

This has been done in other countries before.

The question is the cost of this conversion.
Looks like its cheaper at this scale. I dont know how it would translate to larger scale.

The articles are incredibly low in scientific detail, its very difficult to judge wither its a gilmart or real.

About Colombians:

Being the commercial capital, business interests are ruling within the metropolis. There is this almost blind belief that only UNP can turn around this economy. More business friendly etc.,

Government is still to win the confidence of business community. Hope we will see a change this time.

Any ideas for the government to change this point of view? Or should we simply care?

If we are to go for true development we need to engage everyone. Once that happens there will be very little hope for UNP or JVP in future elections.

Dehsa,

I am not a fan of Sajith. However, he seems to have a better handle on minds of rural masses. I am basing my opinion on what he has expressed in the past. Also, he is functioning from Hambanthota than from Colombo right from the beginning. Foregrounding the likes of Sajith is essential in taking UNP back to patriotic days.

Do you have references (or links) to any large scale implementations of this? Cost effectiveness at that scale.

DiyaS;

What a beauty. You touched most of the facts really well. There will be a Children generation of 2009-2010 era. Both years mark simple magic.

But I doubt few other things.

1. The policy change for it to become the beginning of an era:

I do not see this happening. We will see the continuation of 2005-2010

2. Recolonization in a mega scale or directly supported:

Govt may create the needed room for natural migration, and if natural migration is big enough, that itself will do a pretty good recolonization [only in cities in that case]. But I do not think there is a major plan to take ppl from all over SL and settle them in regions of N/E. If you measure the govt by this factor, it is gonna be a harsh experience.

Also I believe you missed one of teh most critical and most important topic. And that is Devolution. I am even measuring the whole govt by purely on its intentions on this topic.

Nice article Diyasena. You seem to have touched on the important priorities for the elected representatives.

Interesting to note this is the by-seats largest victory.

-----------

With the 2011 census the number of seats allocted to the North is expected to drop by about 4 (Jaffna -3, Vanni- 1)

Does this factor in recol? i.e. people from other areas moving in?

How did JVP manage 7 seats..

2mn voters stayed home. 99% of them were UPFA/UNP supporters. Almost 100% JVP supporters voted. This decrease in votes for main parties while JVP block remains constant helped them to obtain a ratio good enough for a seat in Galle, Gampaha and Kaluthara. If there was 70% turnover JVP will be limited to 2-3. Further comparing manapa for Gonseka vs Handunneththi shows 25% of DNA votes were due to Gonseka. Since this low turnover is natural for all elections other than PE we can expect JVP to keep around 5 parliment seats and a few seats in PCs. So JVP will not join Wikramabahu club any soon.

Would there be a high level ministerial position to a Tamil Leader? Don't we need to show that there would is possibility for Tamils to climb up through the political system.

We have always had Tamils in high positions of cabinet since independence, including moneys like Amithalingam and old man “homOland” Chelva.

Best examples of patriotic Tamils in high positions of power were Kadiragamar and Fernandopulle, both declared traitors by Tamilis and their Western backers, both assassinations (great losses for the nation) were justified as righteous cullings.

Sri Lanka President asks everyone to come together to build the country

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said he is humbled by the continuing support his government receives from the people and the confidence placed in his policies.

"We are humbled by the size of the repeated mandates given by the people and pledge to respond, in full measure, to the trust placed in us," the President said commenting on the on the results of the parliamentary elections held on April 8.

"This is the triumph of Democracy. It is a clear restatement of the confidence the people placed in me, the Mahinda Chinthana and the UPFA at the recent Presidential Election," the President was quoted by the Government Information Department.

The ruling party won 117 seats of the 225-member parliament and secured its power in the new parliament which is to be convened on April 22. The results however, are not yet complete as re-polling is scheduled for two polling divisions.

President Rajapaksa noted that the assured majority in parliament given by the voters encourages the government to proceed with its policies for the strengthening of peace and reconciliation, reconstruction, greater infrastructure development, increased investment in identified areas of growth, and the overall development of the country to make it the centre of economic and social progress in South Asia.

"These results, coming after the successful elections to Provincial Councils and the Presidential Election, are proof that democracy is fully in place in Sri Lanka and the commitment of our people to the democratic process," he said.

The President urged the people to celebrate the victory peacefully and come together to build the country.

"It is now the time for peaceful celebration by those who have contributed to this victory; and the acceptance of the verdict of the ballot by those who have lost. It is also the time for all who place their trust in democracy to come together to build a new era of prosperity for Sri Lanka," the President had said.

Look at this monkey, clearly this idiot just does not get it (Part 1):

Parliment doesn’t have mandate of people

A Parliament has been elected but it doesn’t have the mandate of the country. An unprecedented number of people refused to vote at this election, which means that this Parliament does not represent the wishes of the people.
If you look at elections from 1994 – 2004, on average 75.9 percent of eligible voters have exercised their voting right at the General Elections. Even during the 1989 riots, there was a voter turnout of 63 percent. However, this time only 56.9 percent have voted. Why is there such a large drop in the number of voters? Going by previous General Elections around 10.5 million people should have voted this time. But only around 8 million had actually voted. This means that around 2.5 million people refused to vote. If those votes had been cast, the result of this election would be different.
One other thing that should be noted is that the government has received around 1 million less votes than what they received at the Presidential election.
What happened is that a lot of our supporters were disheartened after the presidential election. They saw very clearly how the government had manipulated the votes they cast in favour of General Fonseka. People felt that their vote was not counted. Understandably they felt that even if they came and voted at the General Election the result would be the same, that the government would once again find a way to manipulate the result.
We had continuous discussions with the Elections Department to ensure that what happened in the Presidential election is not repeated this time. As a result apart from the incidents that took place in certain polling stations in Kandy and Trincomalee, the rest of the voting process took place without any problems. There were no issues even in the counter process. However, that alone does not mean that the election was free and fair. A lot of election laws were violated by Government candidates before the election, and there was nothing the police or the Elections Commissioner could do.
People don’t have any trust in the presidency, legislature, and the electoral system. There is a clear need for change in this country. People have expressed their displeasure at the direction this country is taking by not voting.

-Ranil

Look at this monkey, clearly this idiot just does not get it (Part 2):

We call upon the government to protect the democratic system of this county. Things are deteriorating at a very fast pace. If we allow this to continue democracy will not prevail in this country for too long. We should not allow that to happen.
We also ask the government to accept the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and work accordingly. People in this country need to be assured that their basic rights will be protected. What is the point of talking about other issues, and trying to bring about development if people’s basic rights are not respected? Sri Lankan citizens deserve more than what the Rajapaksa Government is dishing out to them.
The government needs to ensure that media can operate without having to face threats and obstacles while performing their job. It is no secret that at this moment media freedom in the country is in a deplorable state. So many journalists have been killed, attacked, and abducted under the Rajapaksa regime. There are rumours that the government is getting ready to curb media freedom under the new Parliament. We as the opposition will strongly oppose any such move. The only change that needs to be done when it comes to Sri Lankan media is to ensure that they get more freedom. No one is asking for more restrictions on the media.
Several prominent and senior members of the party didn’t make it through this time. But we have a lot of young new faces who have come in. We will take steps to reorganise the party by utilising all available resources. It would be a crime to let these new faces fade away.
Our party will be actively involved not only in activities inside Parliament, but also in activities outside of Parliament.
-Ranil

What I meant by 'strategic recolonisation' is a few villges and miltary cantonments at vital areas in the North and East. The rest will be through natural migration, which the government reckons will be attractive with the development work going on..

[The rest will be through natural migration, which the government reckons will be attractive with the development work going on..]

Actually, I want to see more agressive Re-Selttlement than that accomplished by "natural migration" and "strategic re-colonization" as you define them.

That can be done by tying settlement of non-Tamils to infrastructure development also.

For example, every time a new Government department is set up, 50% of the personnel should be non-Tamils from the South, and 50% local people. Their entire families will be required to resettle in these areas. The Govt will take the lead to create fully integrated educational and commercial facilities to meet the everyday needs of these new settlers.

The Govt already plans a major administrative center for the North to be established at Mankulam .. this can be staffed in this way.

Government should develop EI as a National Policy, and tie Government Subsidies, Tax Breaks and even grants of crown land, given to Private Commercial companies that locate in the North and East, and buy into and help carryout, this EI policy.

A Govt Program should be initiated to explain and get the local Tamil population to accept this departure from narrow Tamil Nationalism towards Sri Lankan Nationalism and buy into this policy.

The benefits of the EI policy to the local Tamil community should be explained to present it as a means of expanding their "homeland" to include the entirety of Sri Lanka, not just a racist aparthied mono-ethnic Bantustan and to get them the benefits of full integration into the mainstream of Sri Lankan society. Ultimately, the true benefit will be full acceptance and integration into a society forever free of communal discord.

In the future, pride in one's own ethnicity, religion, and language will find its proper place in the privacy of one's home, not in public life. In public, ethnic pride will be replaced by pride of Sri Lankan citizens who are able to hold their heads up high and bring up their children in their own country .. in security and comfort.

That is the dream of the New Golden Age that we are now embarked upon.

A new party in Tamil Nadu, inspired by Tigers

The victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa's party in the Sri Lankan parliamentary elections is a good development for Indian national interest, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said on Saturday.

In a press statement, Dr. Swamy said it was a mandate necessary to enable the President to take “bold steps” to amend the Constitution and provide devolution of powers to Tamil areas of the north and the east.

Not quite .. NONE OF US want "devolution of Powers" to "Tamil areas of the North and East" in quite the way Dr. Swamy implies.

First, we don't accept the North and East as "Tamil Areas" .. these lands are the heritage of All Sri Lankans held in Common. They are "Sri Lankan areas."

Second, we don't want power to be devolved on ethnic bases to different regions of the country to embed and exacerbate ethnic separatism as implied by Dr. Swamy.

These Indians are STILL LABORING UNDER THE FALSE ILLUSION that we accept the 13th Amendment, and some form of federalism, they shoved down our throats by force.

All of the separatist and terrorism mayhem that is tearing India apart today has not been solved by their much vaunted federal system .. yet they prescribe this toxic potion as a solution to Sri Lanka.

Indians should SHUT UP and BUTT OUT.

If power is devolved to regions on ethnic bases to placate the Tamils, instead of implementing Ethnic Integration as the solution, I for one will support any and all Patriotic Forces opposed to it.

[[What I meant by 'strategic recolonisation' is a few villges and miltary cantonments at vital areas in the North and East]]

I also did not mean as mega as Gla Oya. Even this level of small villages, is something I fail to see happening from govt.

The govt so far has not shown any interest in RE-COL, as per the news/rumor etc. Either it has not felt the need, or is more worried about "winning the tamil hearts"

It is the latter reason why I suspect that there will be 0 support to "RE-COL". Let's be realistic. RE-COL is by all means the last nail on the coffin of "tamil support" to govt. Instantly they'll offended. Even if they do not offend initially political elements like TNA etc will bring enough agitation for them to be fooled.

Moreover, govt factions such as EPDP will suddenly feel lost. In one end ppl are shooting at them for being a part of govt. Plus teh govt is ignoring them [note that they all hate RE-COL regardless their side]. Note that not only TNA but also EPDP loose advantage due to RE-COL.

So it will be a hell broken loose if the govt touch the topic. In fact govt has chosen the other approach of winning tamil hearts and it is making some progress. So immediately, as far as elections are concerned the govt won't feel RE-COL is needed.

There is one more factor. That is India. This govt is so strong against west that Miliband Hillarious Oh-Blake et al ended up being farters, but govt is still keeping India happy. And it is India who will be the first to yell at any formal R-COL attempt. In fact it is bad and wrong, but still India will do it.

Many would compare this with DSS and JRJ, yet DSS had no Northern tamil support and JRJ's northern tamils [most living in Colombo] were within his own party and cared little for such [anyway JRJ had them under iron control]

[[The rest will be through natural migration, which the government reckons will be attractive with the development work going on..]]

There are many defects in solely natural migration. Firstly it will make the populations city-centric. Secondly the populations will not be substantial enough until for a long period. Thirdly the opponents may turn violent on them. This fear is in many settler minds for previous events.

RE-COL can happen in folowing ways.\

1. City building and filling the populations of cities with likely ppl with matching edu BG [hence reducing colombo's job craze. Building city is not enough, call of application shud be on national basis. Usually what all do is give priority to locals.

2. Agrarian projects in vast and abundant waterways and fertile land. Land distribution shud be on national basis.

3. Traders. When building supermarkets or city centers, some shud be allocated for traders of rest of the country.

4. Military camps. It is very unfair that military ppl are kept away [so far away[ from families. It increases lots of mis-behavior too. So wise idea is to settle their families near the camps, hence making big villages of military residence. Projects like Ranaviru gammana shud be extended to N/E.

You can see the govt sponsorship is essential. Naturally these things won't happen.

At every general election, at least two Tamil candidates would enter parliament from the UNP’s Colombo district list. But at this election only one Tamil candidate won from the UNP list. This loner is Prabha Ganesan. Prabha’s brother, People’s Democratic Front leader Mano Ganesan, who contested on the UNP’s Mahanuwara district list, has lost. However, according to an agreement that the people’s Democratic Front has reached with the UNF, it will get a seat from the UNF national list. Mano Ganesan is likely to get this seat, informed UNP sources said.

Re: Census

I wish 2011 will be either forgotten or ignored. Firstly we don't need a census now. We wanted it before GE not after. I was so much screaming for it in this space. But now by gone is really really by gone, MR lost 2/3 majority perhaps for not doing it!!!

Now we don't want it. We want it as late as 2015. After as much as RE-COL happened. Not now.

Plus, all important one election is left. It is Northern PC. In NPC election, the current balance is far better than what it will be after Census. Since Jaffna population will be more dominant after census and it will empower TNA to definitely win it. As at now Wanni seems "manageable" and TNA cannot boast of a clear victory if govt pockets DPLF and some old pussycat converts.

Re: Sarath Weerasekara and One Piuyasena of D'Madulla

Wow. Now the Panchayudhaya is completed: WW, CR, DG, ven.AR, SW

SW is the first "war-hero" in parliament representing patriots. The Other Sarath represents Yankee-HR-Pussycat-Colombian consortium. SW is a man who converted uneducated village folks into a considerable force guarding what was once border villages and he became the savior of many in MahaOya AralaGanwila MaduruOya regions. Ppl must be having great faith in him. SW made a movie about war too. He's already shown great philosophical sense and all-round talent.

ITAK Piyasena surprises me. But again, didn't we see an enigmatic poster "pls vote sinhalese regardless of parties" Oh baby. Even ITAK top preferred is Sinhala. And in UPFA the muslims are second to a Sinhala man. In UNP also there are few sinala names but who votes UNP at the first place??

Now that is racism you can call. I agree. But Racism at its extreme needs similar counter action. D'madulla is the worst racial fault line in SL anyway.

It tells me another thing. In defence from Muslim power where they're the third majority, Tamils hang onto Sinhala ppl to safe guard them. This is the first time I saw that. Shud prick the Diaspora and show.

Nevertheless this racial fault line in D'madulla shud be diffused soon. Mr President it is one of the most important acts under you. So is for Gen Werasekara.

Re: Sajith and UNP

UNP is not an enemy as far as nationalism is concerned. They are the only party [although with lot of misconduct] fought with lunatics called socialists.

After Banda, Sirima hung onto lunatic's you-know-what and messed the nation with Moscow-doctrine. And CBK brought her NGO-cabal and preached her whisky-liberalism. Even JRJ and RP days were not so bad in terms of nationalism. So do not bash UNP. Again that is missing the woods for few homosexual trees.

It is RW, and his pro-western and non-SL clan that mess the party. Sadly many gud ppl have left it. This same problem happened to SLFP under CBK. Today what Sajith is doing is what MR did under CBK.

Someone said Sajith was a colombo child. Well So was MR. Although born in H'tota MR grew up in Galle and COlombo, has friends there mostly married from Colombo and lived there for most of the time. Everyone born in Colombo are not Colombians, and anyone born outside can still turn a Ccolombian. A Colombian is someone who dreams in Sudda land and feels no sense about ordinary SL ppl. Neither Mr nor Sajith have these weaknesses.

Sajith's young days a full of allegations. But do you know even MR's young days are full of allegations of misconduct. They are both sons of powerful men with some gangster affiliations in younger days.

What I like about Sajith is how he understood the ppl of H'tota, and ppl of the nation altogether and how he still stands firm against betrayal [ex white flags story]. To me he's a great prospect.

Re: JVP

JVP is not dead. You cannot kill it. It is a ppl's party. It represents sentiments of some ppl. Marxism, anti-govt stance etc is at the top but at bottom the phenomena is a public opinion. Note that their leadership is made from university brian wash, but their voter base is not completely misguided graduates.

After the "virtual-death" of JHU and JNF as public political parties, we still need JVP. We will find their role oneday. For the moment few jokers in leadership dance to american tune, but it cannot go on like this for long.

For SL to be a democracy and safeguard it against some "foreign influence" [mythical at times] we always need JVP too. And their occassional dance at Lipton Circus is always a critical part of SL politics.

Re: Our Future

Like Moshe said we are not morally bound to always protect the govt. I have been on and off based on the act than the ppl. It shud be our stand for UNP and JVP too. Even for SF, if SF understands ground reality and stop ball licking of enemies. Now that all short term wars are over, we shud be more far-sighted and vigilant.

We shud not miss the woods for the trees when it comes to any political matter. Time to leave behind temporary and small political differences.

-------------------------------
This is what some one had to say about Sajith

--------------------------------
Sajith, on the other hand has the benefit of a father gone by. most of the people have forgotten about his dad’s excesses. What most people remember now is that he was a common man’s leader and he got things done. We Singhalese have a very short memory. So Sajith can only benefit from his father’s legacy. That is provided that his mom keeps her mouth shut and away from the limelight. She was very unpopular at the last stages of the Premadasa regime
--------------------------------

I can't exactly say who Sajith has turned out to be. But have to say that neither RP or his wife are nice people. So, I can't expect any better from a person like him. UNP like would be a magnet for Colombians who think they know how to manage an economy for some time to come. Luckily most of the Sri Lankans think otherwise.

Italians held over Afghanistan 'assassination plot'

Governor Gulab Mangal said one of the men had received a $500,000 advance
Three Italian medical workers are among nine men arrested in Afghanistan in connection with an alleged plot to kill a provincial governor, officials say.
The detentions came after suicide bomb vests and weapons were discovered at a hospital run by a Milan-based charity in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand.
Helmand Governor Gulab Mangal said the devices had been brought to the clinic "with the help of the foreign staff".
But the charity, Emergency, said it was confident its employees were innocent.
It complained that it had not been allowed telephone contact with them and that the Afghan government had not explained why they were being held.
"These are people who for years have worked to ensure care for the people of Afghanistan. We ask that you respect their rights, first of all, the right to communicate with us and let us know where they are and what their condition is," the organisation said in a statement.

Boat mystery unravelled; 3 Lankan Tamils held

April 09, 2010
ExpressBuzz.com

RAMANATHAPURAM: The mystery of the boat that berthed at Serankottai in Dhanushkodi coast was unravelled when three Sri Lankan Tamils who reached there by the boat were apprehended by the marine police at Kunthukal.

Police and security personnel were groping in the dark following the recovery of a fibreglass boat at Serankottai coast on Wednesday. They were wondering whether the persons who arrived by the boat were LTTE cadres or smugglers.

Meanwhile three Sri Lankans, Gulam Mohideen (28), Safan (16) and Melkhan, of Erikalpatti village in Mannar district, were detained by the marine police personnel at Kunthukal on Thursday. They told the police that they had come by the boat owned by their relatives from Pechalai, unable to bear the torture in Sri Lanka. They had strayed to Kunthukal area after disembarkation from the boat.

The marine police team led by Inspector Sekar detained and questioned them. They said that the government welfare measures were not reaching the Tamils and there was discrimination against them. Sinhalese were given priority in

any welfare scheme. They also told the police that the Lankan army tortured Tamils found in the streets. Tamil fishermen were being beaten by the Lankan navy which robbed them of their belongings. Therefore, Tamils cannot lead a peaceful life in that country. Many Tamils were trying to cross over to India. The three men were sent to Mandapam camp for inquiry.

Inspector Sekar told Express that the three men were roaming along Kunthukal seashore and they were detained. They had said that they reached Serankottai by boat but could not identify where they were due to darkness.

It would be nice to have a dedicated TV channel to cover the parliament, like this .

That would make all MPs feel that the citizens can at any time see what they are getting up to - and hopefully keep them on good behaviour (at least while they are inside!)

This channel can also cover committee meetings and special hearings, and at times be used to educate the public on laws.

About the think tank thing

A lot of you seems to agree on "think tank" like institute capable of influencing the major media in SL and politicians to shape their views and policies towards nationalism.

Now the big question is how do we do it?

US conservative think tanks are the best in the world. (although I do not agree with their ideology) They have the most effective setup that influence the public opinion.

Here is how they work.
______________________

They have payed resident scholars, that do research on various aspects ranging from basic science, sociological topics , international terrorism to military tactics.

The institute publish their research.

Major media networks, freelance bloggers pick up these publications and (1)discuss (2)apply these ideas in explaining contemporary problems.

This process moves the public opinion toward the views of the original publication.

Politicians adjust their policies to suite the public opinion.

What can we do?
________________

We cannot do basic research. We do not have the funds. (the NGO cabal has achieved this stage)

We can publish opinion articles done with a nationalistic view point?
(who will be writing those)

We can have a mailing list that alerts about a publication of a new article.

This way we can have a group that constantly gets nationalistic view points on day to day events in Sri Lanka.

When this group grow, the major news media in SL will try to address/reshape their opinion.

Politicians will have to adjust to this view.

-----------------------------

This is what I think guys a meager start but we have to start from some where.

Any other ideas?

Jathiye Paahara Balla (Top Scum of Sri Lanka)Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu needs to understand what democracy is about before acting a political analysis.

Political analyst Dr. Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu pointed out that the composition of the seventh parliament, with a vast majority of seats occupied by the government, would preclude any possibility of a functioning democracy. Especially when so much authority is already vested in the hands of the Executive.

May be it is the time to remind this doofus that one major component of a democracy is that they carry on the will of the majority, not the will of foreign funded terrorist supporters.

On resident scholars/researchers : why not tap into patriotic university students?

If there is a patriotic university student body (is there one already?) it could also be a counter-weight to uni-based JVP stuff.

Unknown said...

Sam,
This (M.Fuc.er) Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu is all about sri lanka to BBC. During the pres. elction (PE), this M.F. predicted that it is the tamil vote which is critical for the final outcome. BBC broadcasted it for every hour during the PE. For the people all around globle, this M.F is the genuine unbiased educated political analysis.
Like other pro-Ltters, he is under tremendous shock and frustration after final defeat of terrorism. We have to undetand that. With the powerful parliment (without depending on TNA) and exec. precidency, we have a very good oppertunity to solve the NE issue as people want it, without depending LTTE supporters and foreign countries.

Yes there is one already , it is called Chinthana parshadaya (චින්තන පර්ශදය). They are based around Prof, Nalin De Silvas Jathika chinthanaya (ජාතික චින්තනය) Here is the link.

http://www.kalaya.org/home.html

We sure can tap to their base as one resource for articles and view points.

But the big question is how do we start.
We cannot invite outsiders to start, it has to be within our group, (some of you might not agree), then when we expand we can invite (even pay) outside scholars to write articles.

But how do we start?

I have missed the original discussion. So kinda off a bit about it. Tried to find but failed.

Idea looks magnificent. There is definitely a share I can do. I am so much willing.

Someone said whether there will be any bad impression among locals. Well, i do not think so. However most migrants we meet behave like "Parrot of Pakisland" thinking west is teh greatest and parroting western ideals on us. Such ppl get final kick in the butt from locals.

If both sides respect one another and wish to bare teh differences I think it will work really well.

However I see a little you can do to penetrate political circles. Moreover I like its influence in Private Entrepreneurship. There are so many SLans in big places with ability to bring business to SL. They do not do it due to certain defects in SL, and certain high expectations in them. If we can gap this north-south gap SL will get lot of business.

And that is teh golden path taht India took in becoming an economic power.

I am whole heartedly supporting NdeS and his Kaalaya group as far as terrorism and ethinic topics are concerned. In fact the modern day forefathers of most nationalist iseas are him and Gunadasa A.

But I don't like the Kaalay group when it comes for science. TO me they are also some blind believers like JVP. Once when I discussed with them on what is Chathurkotikaya [which I still fail to realize] I got a bad exp. Firstly they kept on saying some gibberish. I kept on asking Qs not understanding it. It is not possible to understand it honestly. Only taht I can believe. Failing to believe I kept on arguing. They finally attacked me personally. They even said taht I am a bloody fool that does not understand teh Chathurkotikaya.

It was such a waste of time.

Visit Kaalaya and see NdeS's science ideas. To me most are absolutely dumb. He wants to show everyone taht we SLans have our own science. Since he really can't find it he is spreading blind belief of some sinhala words etc.

Science is sience and it cannot have a east west buddhist Christian interpretations. All such are non-science and can be removed if there is a better way.

I was thinking at a much more smaller scale of influencing the Sri Lankan political thought.

latest strategy of tamil elamists is to support violence from sinhala sections like in 1971 and 1989.

they are now very serious about it.

this was they can achieve many crap objectives.

1. destabilize SL.

2. deny ppl the "peace dividend". this way ppl can be convinced war victory is NOT peace

3. show the IC the violent nature of GOSL, continuously

4. get pro-TE parties elected in larger numbers

5. revenge

we should have a strategic response to it. not just a reaction.

the BEST way to keep the south quiet is by creating tension in the north!!!

you can see this from 1976-1987 and 2005-2009.

the MOMENT the tension in the north stops, south becomes violent.

e.g. in 1971 the north was very good. 1965- 1972 govts paid alot of attention to the north. the threat/tension issue was taken away.

e.g. from 1976-1987 the war unified the south.

e.g. 1987-89 - SL govt had no war. this once again collapsed southern unity.

e.g. 1990-2001 - war kept the south under control

e.g. 2001-2005 - JVP, JHU and similar groups had a HUGE INCREASE IN POWER. 45 seats in parliament!!! what if no PE in 2004??? these guys would have found another way to express themselves.

e.g. 2005-2009 - govt managed to increase its power!!! even strikes were fewer!!!

but we can't just create violence. there should be a peaceful way of doing this but that can achieve the required TENSION that will unify the south until the country achieves enough economic prosperity that will PERMANANTLY keep everyone calm.

the only way is colonization.

this will create mild tension between north-south. the rise of anti-racism will keep the south united against the perceived/actual enemy.

that's not all. this will resolve MOST economic problems the south has.

e.g. landlessness, unemployment OF THE LOWEST SECTIONS OF THE SOCIETY, not enough economic development, high basic food cost, etc.

we have to remember for MANY REASONS, the BIGGEST employer in the country has stopped recruiting anymore since 2010!!!!

Yes, you are right .. marriage is the last bastion of caste among the Sinhalese .. but nowhere else. That ugly vestige of our remote past is fast vanishing into irrelevance.

You are TOTALLY WRONG about the caste issue in Fonseka's Follies .. that is what the good old Eelamists and the incurably disappointed would-be ministers of the opposition banished from power like to propagate to divide the Sinhala community and regain office.

IT SIMPLY WON'T WORK anymore .. in fact it will gain them nothing but ENMITY and DISLIKE from the Sinhala masses.

Dear old Fonseka would have been revered as a war hero the remainder of his life, but blinded by unbounded ambition, he turned on his fellow patriots and behaved like a thug, and reaped what he sowed.

The lesson that all thugs of all communities should take note is this: The characteristic gentle smile of the typical Sinhalese that springs from his good breeding should not be equated to lack of courage, toughness and moral fiber .. as the Sun God then, and Gonseka now, found out to their utter surprise and dismay .. it is only the VELVET glove that hides the STEEL hand within.

re: think tanks

1. building a think-tank DB

it must be simple. each SL embassy keeps tracks of news in that country. whenever a SL highflyer comes in news, contact him. if he likes to contribute his expertise to SL in THE FIELD HE HAS EXPERTISE (ONLY) type his details into a spreadsheet and send to the foreign ministry in colombo.

then it is sent to the ministry of nation building where the DB - which is nothing more than an excel 2007 spreadsheet is maintained of local and foreign resident think-tanks. their whereabouts, details, new achievements updated the same way.

assess their capabilities centrally.

this is used as and when required and as and when they are available.

think-tank building and accessing - DONE.

2. who should be in???

NOT NECESSALIRY patriots.

re: colonization

we DON'T need think-tanks for that!!! welioya, galoya are RESOUNDING SUCCESS stories.

but we need better planning of towns, use of better yielding crops, best agri practices available, etc. all these expertise is avialable from the mahaweli development authoruty (it has connetions to relevent deprt/board/authority.

3. directing SL's furutre strategy should NOT be the task of think-tanks. that should be TOTALLY political.

think-tanks may have brilliant political strategies but should NOT be entertained UNLESS go with the political strategy.

e.g. singapore, japan, south korea, USA, etc.

employing them for this purpose is what should happen.

WHOA! What a trip! What a brief holiday! What a MAGNIFICENT ELECTION!!!

The Anti-Eezam patriotic force won again and I was happy to be in the thick of it in Colombo (mainly) over the past days.

Well well, as usual the spears/daggers were all out to defeat our MR-GOSL patriotic force and this time to buggers threw even the kitchen sink at it.

For instance, I was there and saw to my own eyes when the DNA (=washed out JVP MFs) tried a new tactic and got some JVP leaning bhikkus to demonstrate at Fort railway station with a cry for the relase of Gonseka - and how they were "dismantled" by the Police.

Wow, what a ploy...they thought the inevitable forced removal of them will strike a chord with the average Buddhist Sinhela, i.e. against MR GOSL, but it went like a puss-wedilla.

Seeing the trap, MR GOSL (in particular Gota - to whom I will always hold high regard) handled it firmly but tactfully and in the end the buggers were left in limbo - yes, the DNA did not have a solid plan B!

Talk about a bunch of amateurs...bloody washed out bunch of f'ing kooks who lack the A-B-C knowledge of how to plan, execute, AND improvise (if need be)!

If the late R. Wijeweera saw how these kooky MFs were behaving today, I am sure he would say "I should have never started this!"

Speaking of DNA...

A truly disturbing "tidbit" I gathered while in SL.

That is now there are just more than an occasional rumor about how some of the JVPs, especially at senior level JVP, are suspected to have taken "huge amounts" of money from certain foreign powers to destabilize and bring down MR GOSL.

The funny thing is the money is alleged to have been given by JVP's "arch-foreign-enemies" but that has not stopped the JVP MFs from accepting these large and generous "gifts."

What a bloody shame...what a calamity...imagine what the near 60,000+ Sinhela boys/girls who died (some burnt on tires, other thrown to Kelani river with their their hands bound, others decapitated and their skull mounted on poles on Kandy road - all handy work of JRJ/RW/RP UNP govts) would say this is what their once grass-root revolutionary force has now become?

Bloody shame!

I really feel my blood boil now and am sad...truly sad...for all those brave Sinhela boys/girls who gave their lives thinking they were behind a cause that will eventually win the nation for the "poor and downtrodden."

Today the new-found Patron Saint of this movement is a very wealthy, highly corrupt, US backed, pro-Tamizeezam MF who is - luckily - languishing in detention!

Sad! Sad indeed!

As our veteran patriot Sam said, the "battle" within SL may be over (at least for the time being) but it is not over yet in the wholesome context.

As long as "thamizeeza" whores are producing "blood for panties" anti-SL commercials in the west (or was it a cry by a LTTE bitch saying "too much blood in my dirty panties"...damn it, I now can't recall :)) we will have this battle to fight for our beloved Maathra Bhumiya.

At a personal level, well, I am content now...I feel many of us valiantly fought (in our own way) to see this milestone reached (i.e. MR in Prez position again and this anti-thamizeezam GOSL continuing to run the country at least for another 5 years) and now we all can be very happy of the results.

For sure the LTTE whores are defeated but not only that, we (that is SL populace) have assured that monster will not raise its head again easily in SL.

Now the time is for MR and his GOSL to prove that all our efforts were not in vain. This is the time for MR GOSL to "SRI LANKANIZE" once again our beloved motherland and to that end I am in full agreement with many of you patriots who strongly advocate "Recolonization" as the top priority.

As such, henceforth...

Yes, I will still fight every tooth and nail all LTTE or "thamizeeza" MFs who want to harm my beloved MaathraBhumiya.

However, I will not bat for MR GOSL on blanket basis (such as earlier, when we had to see the importance of the woods and not just the trees) as now MR GOSL does not need any such help...it has been given, once again, by the patriotic SL masses the mandate to clean up for good this "ethnic problem" (not sure what the F that is, but if one says there is such, then I say it only needs "recolonization" as the soothing balms) AND develop the country without let or hindrance.

Therefore, if it does not do any one of these as mandated by the patriotic SL masses, to their satisfaction that is, then I will be the first off the gate to condemn this MR GOSL in no uncertain terms - and means!

As I have said repeatedly in these blogs, this is not about "party politics" but about Motherlanka's very survival.

Think Tank

The ideal version we can have is what Dhesha has described (SL needs something akin to the CPA but nationalistic not terrorist sucking scums).

The CSIS and IISS and Universities in Western countries provide scholars etc who research on countries and advice Western Governments (and then media) on how to approach countries and best exploit them to ensure Western interests are met. They study people, divisions, culture, politics in these countries and research thoroughly the history and see how best to approach these nations (including interference, manipulations etc) to get the what is best for the West.

Think tanks function best as foreign policy research tools (not about national building/planning).

The idea for us to do something similar ourselves (not limited to ex-pats, basically all those with pro-SL sentiment) was pushed by Ananda.
Considering the vast amount of ideas and research as well as strategies on how to counter the hostile forces (die-ass-pora, suddhas, local traitors, media) against us that pools into this blog by all contributors (and from others elsewhere such as Lankaweb) formalising it into proper articles, and press releases was what I believed we should attempt to do.

This is the best they can come with? More than half of their complaining is over trivial issues likes this and repeating them, making it ¾ of their bogus report trivial:

The CMEV also expressed concern over the confusion and disarray relating to the indelible ink on the ring finger of voters. Clear disregard to the Election Commissioner’s directive to this practice was observed. Ink was applied to both ring and little fingers during the first few hours and such reports were received by the CMEV from all over the country, particularly from Vavuniya, Deraniyagala, Colombo, Wattala, Puttalam, Kalawewa and Minneriya.

A number of complaints regarding the transparency procedures followed by election officials at polling centres too were reported to CMEV. Ballot papers that were issued were marked with the voters’ registration number on the counterfoil. This affected the secrecy of the voters.

Anonymous said...

Well i say welldone to the lad who did this (lol!) but anyway why are they bitching? Nawalapitiya results were annulled.

CMEVs job is of course to discredit elections as per their masters orders until such a time their lackeys (Ranilam) comes to power or has a chance of securing power. They are complaining about post election violence (Puttalam) but conveniently not pointing fingers at who, not surprise really, if it was UPFA they would have gone to town with it. Comically during the PE, this group of idiots went around complaining MR was running the monopoly on cut outs (as if those annoying things actually bolstered MRs chances) and too many favouring him thus out doing Gonseka who had none which was unfair on poor Gonseka. Then in the same breath they also complained that cut outs were being burnt and trying to blame the Government for it. So cut outs are illegal, unfair for Gonz as he has none, but when Gonz goons burn them that is also illegal and unfair on Gonz and it is the Governments fault for violence started by Gonz.

Amazing that this CMEV is run by Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu. Quite a resume this guy has: Election monitor, political analyst, peace advocate, journalist, war crimes expert, human rights watcher, Sri Lanka expert and a host of others including “threatened indiviual” Hikz. There is already a CCTV network in Parliament to view its sitting as well as other areas that is already used by MPs and President when they want.

So it should not be too difficult in publicly broadcasting this on a separate channel (with perhaps a team of analysts to give some views on the days proceedings).

US Dollars at work, as Asithri said Rohana Wijeweera must be turning in his unknown burial site:

"The JVP marked the 39th anniversary of its 1971 April insurrection on April 5. The JVP maintained an unbroken tradition of holding a commemorative ceremony to mark the death anniversary of its leader Rohana Wijeweera at the open air theatre of the Viaharamahadevi Park. All members of the party’s central committee, polit-bureau and party cadres from all parts of the country dutifully attended this annual event. They call this commemorative ceremony ‘Maha Viru Samaruwa’.

However, April 5 this year witnessed an empty Open Air Theatre at the Viharamahadevi Park. There were no red-clad JVP members carrying red flags there.
The JVP announced that they held a `Maha Viru Samaruwa’in Matara this year. Only Tilvin Silva from the party hierarchy attended this ceremony. JVP leaders like Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Lal Kantha, Bimal Ratnayake, Sunil Handunnetti, and Vijitha Herath were conspicuous by their absence at this lacklustre ceremony.

Moshe,

For robbery to work we need to do some propaganda work.

Publish nonstop their luxary lives, their wealth (do it through a private channel and media who "investigated"), keep saying loud and clear what we all know: they use our suffering to make themselves rich.

Need lots of negativity. It needs to be mainstream media attacks on these NGOs gonas.

Then robbery.

The cleanst option by far is road accident. Have a "drunk" driver run him down or bus bash into his car, or a lorry tip on him. It is the easiest as it is common (with the history SL driving).

also i foresee situations where we HAVE TO retaliate in the near future.

this is shitt business but must be done. it can cost us some friends but not doing would be worse.

1. ppl will take matters into their hands.

2. continued attacks on a SINGLE group off ppl makes them surrender to the attackers' agents. but if everyone suffers, this type of a HIGH-LOW won't be there. BOTH parties will want to deescalate violence.

otherwise ONLY one party will want to deescalate violence. AT ANY COST. fcuking dangerous.

it is not advisable to do these retaliatory strikes by SLDFs when there is peace. for that we need a ruthless killer group working under us.

MOST bloggers disagree with me on retaliation. but if we don't retaliate, LTTE will have an IDEAL BREEDING GROUND.

they will attack us and we will surrender to their demands.

worse, they will attacks us and their civilian representatives too will extort favours from us!!! worse still, they will attack us and their civilians will extort things from us.

it is not practical to trace all LTTE MFs tp punish. if we wait till we can get LTTE MFs to punish we are doomed. pending the punishment of LTTE MFs, we should retaliate by eliminating those closest to the LTTE, immediately.

LTTE MFs' thinking is this.

1. we attack.
2. they cannot attack us.
3. they should give our demands.
4. if not we will attack.
5. loop back to #1.

to carryout these work, we need a group of killers.

Moshe,

Just need to say "drunk driver got him" (heck it could be even an empty car that is rammed into Paki-sothri though that requires some harder planning)

Point being a road accident is the best option.

Being a "high profile" person details will WANT to be known. That is why your robbery idea is far to sloppy.

Your idea of a robbery caused death just smacks of “obvious” Government hand. It also DEMANDs justice and people to be caught. There can be no obscurities otherwise Government will be blamed.

Some random "drunk" who is named (or not for his “human rights” protection hiks) is easier to then pass of the death. It needs to be made to look like perpetrators are being caught. Otherwise we will see "international condemnation" that we saw when scum-Lasantha was killed. SL does not need that, and in this scenario it can be avoided.

Road accident is way easier because it looks innocent AND the identity of the driver can be masked more easily by saying it was a drunk.
Nothing more really. Basically a whole profile needs to be made and scene set nicely to cover the tracks well.

Moshe Dyan said...

pol,

"identity of the driver can be masked more easily"

no. the driver will be immediately taken into custody. that's the law. if he absconds, then we are in deeeep shitt!!!

when in custody NGO buggers will approach his family and threaten or give money and get him to spill the beans.

if the driver is our man, still his photos will be taken and traced. then it is worse.

if our man gets injured or the target escapes (can easily happen in planned road accidents), then we are stuffed!!

anyway the blame will come to govt even if they die of old age!! but what matters is the ability to conceal.

vehicle registration. who it belonged to...... all this is impossible to supress. a stolen lorry driven by a drukard running over this guy is too obvious as it rarely happens in SL.

CID can investigate the robebry but obviously won't find anything!!!

after the robbery happens, media can say HOW RICH these NGO guys are and how they lavishly spend money around the country attracting potential robbers.

SL has a recent history of kidnappings for ransom anyway.

Rapper M.I.A. has accused the Sri Lankan government of launching a sinister campaign to oversee her movements and "ban" her from returning to her native Britain.

The Paper Planes hitmaker arrived back in her home country last month (Mar10) after 18 months living in Los Angeles, and claims she encountered numerous problems with her travel documents.

She is convinced officials in Sri Lanka deliberately sabotaged her plans to fly home by "pulling the strings" after she criticised the government and accused authorities in the country of "genocide" during the Asian nation's lengthy civil war.

The rapper - real name Maya Arulpragasam - fears she is now on a list of international terror suspects and is adamant she has been spied on and that her email and Twitter.com accounts have been hacked into.

She tells NME, "People used to come and park outside my house in L.A. I felt so powerless... I'm living f**king proof that politics doesn't work. Every time I breathe it's documented on my computer, and yet I'm still on some stupid list somewhere that says I'm a terrorist."

Earlier this year (10), M.I.A. told her followers on Twitter of her ongoing struggle to return to Britain, writing: "Banned from leaving the U.S., family banned from coming to U.S. to see me, baby."

Good write up Diyasena.

This election represents the over throw of Pro-West Colombo Elitists ("The Colombians") who wielded the ruling power of Sri Lanka for more than 50 years since independence.

The rise of Sinhala Nationalism has reached its unprecedented heights.

The class struggle between the Colombians and the Sinhala Nationalists have left the Sinhala Nationalists clear victors.

The triumph of Wimal Weerawansa over the an ultimate elitist and pro-western stooge, Ranil Wickremasinghe, in his own turf in Colombo(an unthinkable situation a few years back), represents this monumental change in the dynamics of Sri Lankan society.

The rise of Champika Ranawaka without even so much as a single poster on the wall represents the deep self-awareness among sinhalese that their time has come in History!

No more those born with silver spoons lead us.

We have banished the British legacy of the kalu suddas left to rule our country on their behalf!

50 years since Independace, we Sinhalese have finally shed our lethargy and woken up as one Nation. We have heeded Tibet jaathika S. Mahinda himi's call, "Sinhalayeni Nagitaw"!!

Yes sir, we woke up, finally. The road is long and hard, we have many rivers to cross and many mountains to climb. But we will make it as One nation under one flag and match the feats of our ancestors.

U.S. Troops Fire on Afghan Bus, Killing Civilians
April 12, 2010 02:53

KABUL, Afghanistan: American troops raked a large passenger bus with gunfire near Kandahar city on Monday morning, killing at least five civilians and wounding 18, Afghan authorities and survivors said.

The attack infuriated Kandahar leaders and could harm public opinion on the eve of the most important offensive of the war, which is intended to take control of the Kandahar region from the Taliban this summer.

Hundreds of demonstrators poured into the area around a bus station on the western outskirts of Kandaharcity, shouting anti-NATO chants and blocking the road for one hour, according to people in the area.

The bus driver and one of the passengers said that an American convoy 60 to 70 yards ahead of the bus opened fire as the bus began to pull to the side of the road to allow another military convoy traveling behind to pass.

The two convoys and the bus were on the main highway in Sanzari, about 15 miles, or 24 kilometers, west of Kandaharcity. All of the windows on one side of the bus were shot out.

Troops opened fire on the bus just after daybreak as it was taking scores of passengers to Nimroz province, said Zalmy Ayoubi, a spokesman for the Kandaharprovincial governor.

Some of the wounded were in critical condition, and the death toll could rise, local officials said.

Mr. Ayoubi said five civilians had been killed, including one woman.

The Interior Ministry in Kabul issued a statement saying four civilians had been killed and 18 wounded, blaming “NATO forces” traveling in front of the bus for the shooting.

An American military spokesperson put the casualty toll at five dead — all men — and said four others had been wounded, but added that other details would be made public later.

Mr. Ayoubi, the provincial spokesman, said, “We strongly condemn this action carried out by NATO forces, and we want a thorough investigation of the incident, to find out why they targeted the civilian bus.”

If the Afghan government’s casualty toll is correct, it would imply that troops fired scores or even hundreds of rounds. It was not immediately clear why such a large fusillade would have been directed at a passenger bus.

[CNTD]

“An American convoy was ahead of us and another convoy was following us, and we were going to pull off of the road, and suddenly the Americans opened fire,” said one passenger, Nida Mohammed, who suffered a shoulder injury.

“We were not close to them, maybe 60 yards away from their convoy,” Mr. Mohammed said.

A helicopter evacuated some wounded, he said.

“This bus wasn’t like a suicide bomber, and we did not touch or come close to the convoy,” he said. “It seems they are opening fire on civilians intentionally.”

The driver of the bus, Mohammed Nabi, said, “I was going to take the bus off the road.” Then the convoy ahead opened fire.

Like Mr. Mohammed, he said the Americans were about 60 to 70 yards away.

“We were not close enough and we did not violate their signal,” he said. “It is a huge bus full of passengers, and if they think we were a suicide bomber, we are sad that the American have killed innocent people.”

“We don’t feel safe while traveling on the main highways anymore because of NATO convoys,” he said.

The incident came a week after the American-led military command in Kabul— after initial denials of culpability or a cover-up — admitted that its forces had killed three Afghan women during a bungled American Special Operations assault in February.

NATO officials are struggling to contain fallout from a series of tirades against the foreign military presence by the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, who has also assailed the killing of civilians by Western forces.

Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the American and NATO commander in Afghanistan, has had some success in reducing civilian casualties through restrictions on night raids and new controls on Special Operations forces. But mishaps on Special Operations missions — which are blamed for many of the civilian deaths caused by allied forces — continue to anger Afghans.

A statement on April 4 admitted that “international forces” were responsible for the deaths of the women. Officials had earlier said that American Special Operations forces and Afghan troops were involved in the operation. The statement added that “the women were accidentally killed as a result of the joint force firing” at suspects during a house raid.

“We deeply regret the outcome of this operation, accept responsibility for our actions that night, and know that this loss will be felt forever by the families,” said Brig. Gen. Eric Tremblay, a spokesman for the NATO command in Kabul.

In a statement soon after the raid, NATO had claimed that soldiers had come upon the “bodies of three women who had been tied up, gagged and killed” and hidden in the house. Military officials also said later there were puncture and slashing wounds on the bodies, and that the women appeared to have been killed several hours before the raid. – (International Herald Tribune)

Mossad has a total of eight departments, though some details of the internal organization of the agency remain obscure.

1. Collections Department is the largest, with responsibility for espionage operations, with offices abroad under both diplomatic and unofficial cover. The department consists of a number of desks which are responsible for specific geographical regions, directing case officers based at "stations" around the world, and the agents they control.

2. Political Action and Liaison Department conducts political activities and liaison with friendly foreign intelligence services and with nations with which Israel does not have normal diplomatic relations. In larger stations, such as Paris, Mossad customarily had under embassy cover two regional controllers: one to serve the Collections Department and the other the Political Action and Liaison Department.

3. Special Operations Division, also known as Metsada, conducts highly sensitive assassination, sabotage, paramilitary, and psychological warfare projects.
LAP (Lohamah Psichlogit)Department is responsible for psychological warfare, propaganda and deception operations.

that will IMPOSE our moral superiority coupled with the war victory over them with enough respect for them as well.

It is like creating a nice plaque for Hitler for all the good deeds he has done in the past before he started killing Jews.
Being morally superior does not take us anywhere. That is one of the reasons we get screwed all the time. Being nice to serpents doesn't work.

Apropos my article on the above subject published in The Island mid last month, I regret that I have made an error when I referred to the King’s Crown which was stolen from the museum and melted was that of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha which was returned by the British government and the loss occurred at the National Museum, [Colombo].

Dr. P. H. D. H de Silva, who was the Director of the National Museum ,has sent a note to a common friend in Kandy after reading my article which the latter brought to my attention. I thought I would reproduce it rather than paraphrase it.

"Bandu had made a small error and that was about the Kandyan King’s Crown. What was burgled was the Crown of King Rajasimha II from the Kandy National Museum way back during Deraniyagala’s administration. They came through the roof and the Police recovered several small bars of gold and a few pieces of the Crown. During Mrs. Bandaranaike’s time, Nissanka Wijeyeratne, who was Secretary to our Ministry, arranged for a copper replica to be made and some of the gold from the recovered bars was overlaid on the replica. The rest he got me to hand over to the Central Bank. This was opened to the public by Governor-Genera William Gopallawa at the Kandy Museum which you see today.

"The Crown of King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha is at the Colombo National Museum. Long ago, a lunatic had broken the glass and put the Crown on his head. He was quickly taken in by Police who arrived promptly and a dent in the Crown is the only evidence of the incident."

I wrote that part of the story from recollections of a newspaper report which I read a long time back. I had mixed up the two events referred to by Dr. de Silva. I thank Dr. de Silva for correcting me and apologise to him for mentioning that the loss was at the Colombo National Museum which was under his able administration for a long time. I also apologise to the readers for this mix-up on my part.

Whether the incident happened in Colombo or Kandy, it does not take away from my argument that we as a nation do not seem to care much about even valuable patrimony like the Crown of one of our heroic rulers. It is unpardonable that King Rajasinha II’s Crown was spirited away in the very City where the King held Court a few centuries ago. Rajasinha II was a ruler who fought relentlessly to chase the Portuguese and the Dutch out of this country and left his indelible mark on the history of the country in many ways.

Thusita,

"Being morally superior does not take us anywhere. That is one of the reasons we get screwed all the time. Being nice to serpents doesn't work."

Well said Thusita.

We need to excavate the earth make a giant ditch and fill it with mosquitoes, in the time being the area could also be turned into a garbage dump.

That would keep people away.

At least four civilians were killed and 18 others wounded when Nato forces fired at a bus in southern Kandahar province, sparking angry protests.

Last week Nato admitted its forces were responsible for the deaths of three women during a botched night-time raid in eastern Afghanistan in February.

And it is also investigating whether its forces killed four civilians in an air strike in southern Helmand province in early April.

Hello, earth to Monkey Ban!
Hello! Hello!
Bugger! Monkey Ban is not home.

Cheers!

Same to you SK plus the rest of the Patriots.

I think this would be the first year after 1971 that we can look forward to a peaceful nation. Whether that would last needs to be seen. But lets hope for the best.

Also happy new year for all the soldiers and their families for bringing this peace for Mother Lanka.
