Sarath's Guide of Hero to Zero in 21 Days - General commits political suicide

Two days ago, I was writing a post/comment on current political situation. I have been supportive to Mahinda over the time, and have been predicting his victory. Although the two matters of supporting and predicting are independant many took my posts for political propaganda. Nevertheless I promised that I'd write of any trends towards SF, if any were available.

Two days ago, I had facts to write about. It wasn't a wave as big as 2004 Boxing Day Clean Sweep, yet I met few people, notably non-UNPers, who were swaying for good reasons or bad reasons. General did almost nothing but Mahinda's stray dogs have been scoring for general. Let me note down what I observed, exactly until two days ago.

- People hated many stray dogs such as Mervyn/Hadda attacking general. Some patriorts in MR camp were shaky and kinda moving towards general for sympathy.

- Some lesser aware people were fooled by General's bogus campaign. There was a going rumor that "Executive President can abolish the rank Executive President". This is a blatent lie, but UNP lie machines have done their part. Many were deceived. And that covered the biggest flop in General's manifesto. Right or wrong general had scored.

- General's "something more than 13th" did not hit many minds. Many thought that "General will not betray nation" although he said so. Maybe many people wanted to give him a second chance.

- Defection of a top class political mastermind cum power hungry scum, S B Dissanayake. We all know he's like a compass turning towards power. I believe MR did the biggest mistake. For the short time goals he created the biggest risk for him - a Deva Datta among his ranks. Many ppl said that they don't want S B in ruling party, hence General gaining few votes.

- Scum S B calling General a "man like an animal", for which even I felt so disgusted.

- General's posters have been damaged or pictures are deformed. These kind of arrogant and stupid behavior taking every credit away from Mahinda.

I felt that at least few thousands from Mahinda's camp would have crossed.

And just when it was most critical, SF shot in his own butt and threw shit all over the house. First he made his remarkable comment on GR granting shoot-at-will commands against so called surrendering big Pussycats. Then he tried so synthetically and impractically to cover his nakedness leaving some endless questions in the mouths of many foreign parties.

Today, everything as two days ago, makes no sense. I need to rethink on my post. Few facts that arrived in.

- General did his first major betrayal. No matter what bad treatment he received, he is beyond all freedom to issue such news, had it even been true. There is a code of conduct, or ethical bond not to put the men of his previous command in trouble.

- And then he tried recovering, but simply told us that he, then Commander of Army, happened to believe in rumors about his own junior ranks as stated by some stray journalist [who had no guts to write it in public]. This is an utter mess.

- Imagine Gotabhaya Rajapakse ordered this killing of the leaders, bravo, the way to go.  Had we left the trio to get away, today the pussycats will be running under their command, and many 100s of soldiers civilians and pussycat hostages die on every passing day.

- Why should we allow a free passage for some masterminds whom scrificed poor school chrldren as cannon fodder? What assurance do you have that they are not using the white flags to launch a major attack? Why so late for surrender? So wasn't it so great if Gota ordered this, instead of allowing white masters to help pussycats once again?

General just told the whole nation that it was Gota, not him, who held a firm hand against Pussycats, hence winning the war for us. And he lost almost all of his worth in saying so.

And right now, I see a major shake in the patriotic support base of SF. For the first time, most initial supporters are considering their support. Most people who gave him a second chance for "more tahn 13th" are in the mood of deserting him.

It was all lost in one shot. Unless Mahinda's stray dogs score another own goal for General, this will remain the biggest damage by far to his campaign - an almost political suicide. Lots of damage control going, mainly with JVP who has better sense than UNP/Mangala, but little too late. Sunday Leader leads the damage as usual.

It is very non-defence like to discuss the porgress of Presidential capmapign here. But it is all the more defence related when a supposed to be responsible former commander betray his team with true or fake stories like this. As long as Army is taken for political mileage, the matter is defence related, and of the highest interest of national security.

And it is no longer common political mud slinging. What should await the General is a case in court for treason. Whatever you did for nation does not suffice to save you after this level of betrayal.

1. Bogus allegations with Sunday Leader against our heroic armed forces.
2. Interview confirming his act of betrayal (check 3:24).

* Can a former army chief who could not even cooperate with his fellow navy commander be expected to bridge the gap between two different ideologies such as of the UNP and JVP?

* Can a person who could not be satisfied even with powers of the Defence Secretary be expected to shed the immense powers of the Executive Presidency if he could ever grab that power?

* Can a person who was not ready to share the credit of the victory with the others who made great contributions be expected to share the political power with the rest?

* Can a person who chose to team up with the corrupt at the outset of his political career be expected to eliminate corruption in the country later?

* If by any chance, he was involved with attacking and murdering journalists who wrote against him, can he be expected to establish democracy in the country?

* Above all, can a man who is ready to betray the very same people who once helped him so dearly for own advantage, be expected establish good governance in the country?

illegal immigration was the biggest security threat SL faced b4 the war, during the war and after the war.

while military means are good at stopping them, they cannot deter it. IF (i mean IF) all conventional methods fail to stop illegal migration of potential terrorists, seperatists and their relatives to SL, i proposed some time ago that we use other kinds of deterrents like kidney heist.

sound a bit bad but national security and our baoundaries are precious and must be protected at all cost.

the following report is an exaggeration but you get the idea. in that case the aim was a little bit different, though.

Israel harvested organs illegally

Israel has admitted that in the 1990s, its forensic pathologists harvested organs from dead bodies, including Palestinians, without their families' permission.

The issue emerged with publication of an interview with the then-head of Israel's Abu Kabir forensic institute, Jehuda Hiss. The interview was conducted in 2000 by an American academic, who released it because of a huge controversy last summer over an allegation by a Swedish newspaper that Israel was killing Palestinians to harvest their organs. Israel hotly denied the charge.

Parts of the interview were broadcast on Israel's Channel 2 TV over the weekend. In it, Hiss said: "We started to harvest corneas... Whatever was done was highly informal. No permission was asked from the family."
The Channel 2 report said in the 1990s, forensic specialists at Abu Kabir harvested skin, corneas, heart valves and bones from the bodies of Israeli soldiers, Israeli citizens, Palestinians and foreign workers, often without permission from relatives.

In a response to the TV report, the Israeli military confirmed the practice took place. "This activity ended a decade ago and does not happen any longer," the military said in a statement quoted by Channel 2.

from the island.

"Former President Chandrika Kumaratunge is back in town. She has said that she is here to help former army chief Sarath Fonseka to stop the ‘robbing’ of the State. Good God!

Has she no fear or shame? The people of this country would like her to explain certain charges made against her.

The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) and CIMOGG listed the instances of alleged misdemeanours on the part of her government.

Many eminent citizens have also written to the newspapers requesting that a Special Commission of Inquiry be appointed with judges of the Supreme Court but the President has hitherto done nothing about it for reasons best known to him.

The President of CIMOGG the mercurial Dr. Visvalingam on behalf of us citizens, states that they would wish to see doubts regarding the following matters cleared up:

1) Tawakkal: the-take over of Puttalam cement

2) Air Lanka take over by Emirates

3) Shell Gas monopoly

4) Water’s Edge transaction

5) Rubber Block factory affair

6) Alleged purchase of second hand vehicles at new car prices

7) Giving Admiral Sandagiri an unprecedented three year extension after the age of retirement, considering that there had been serious allegations against him in respect of improper arms purchases.

8) The French locomotive tender: The Tender Board was compelled to authorize the purchase of ship engines for locomotives, the engines are ‘rusting in peace’ in the Ratmalana Railway yard.

9) Irregularities in the administration of the President’s Fund.

10) How she came to be granted an official staff of 63 and 198 security officers and a fleet of 36 government vehicles (Is this by itself not scandalous?)

Thanks to the former Chief Justice Sarath N Silva, the country was able to salvage Waters Edge. An enterprising entrepreneur certainly developed the property and should have been rewarded for it but he set about obtaining the property by corrupt means through CBK. She is, of course, unable to deny that.

Be that as it may, finally the manner in which she came to have land allotted to her in Pelawatte despite owning a house in Colombo7 became an issue. The former CJ came to our rescue. Incidentally there is an email being circulated showing a fabulous house in London which they say belongs to her, this I must confess I find difficult to believe as it looks more like a palace than anyone’s home; she should in her own interest, please tell us, the people, whether she owns a house in the UK and how she acquired the monies to purchase her house and its address. Even though the legislation is not in place in this country we could have someone in the UK, where the citizens have a right to information to obtain the information, if she refuses to divulge any details.

We the people are sick and tired of the corruption that has assumed the proportions of a virulent corrosive cancer and is destroying this country.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa had promised to wipe out corruption in his Mahinda Chintanaya and has also stated so more recently; we now find that corruption has become endemic. We do not think corruption can be wholly wiped out in poor countries but he should deal with the problem in a meaningful manner; we now expect him to live up to his promise and deliver. Whether they be Presidents, Ministers Generals or Admirals or senior officials, it does not matter. The bigger the fish the better; the President would not only earn the admiration of the entire country but also of the world community for cracking down on corruption. The President would no doubt be accused of tolerating corruption and protecting the corrupt by default if he does not act.

Moshe Dyan said...

He must begin by establishing a Commission to inquire into the alleged misdeeds of Mrs. Kumaratunge and also obtain a statement from her about her foreign assets and how she acquired them.

The President by not appointing a Commission would loose the trust of the people. It would indeed be a shame if their confidence in him is eroded as a result of protecting the corrupt particularly at this time."

Helaya,

Just having a different, but rational and defensible, point of view has never been a cause for anguish among patriots at the DW, or the SLDF blogs.

Uniform condemnation of a point of view by many independent bloggers depends on how acceptable, or unacceptable, that point of view is to ordinary mortals like us.

For example, Hitler, Pol Pot ,and Velupillai Prabhakaran also had different points of view, but they were universally condemned by most right-thinking ethical people.

On the other hand, there are some here who support SF .. they attract debate, but not outright condemnation.

Then, there are those who are chastised not for holding a different point of view, but for their REPREHENSIBLE PERSONAL CONDUCT proven beyond doubt.

This conduct includes simultaneously espousing diametrically opposite views under different blog names, and stabbing people in the back while professing friendship at the front under different persona/blog handles.

Some others pretend to be patriots until they gain acceptance; then they pursue their true agenda undermining Sri Lanka.

Invariably, they make mistakes, expose themselves, are forced to abandon their valued "cover names", and laboriously create others. The FLAWED CHARACTERS of these individuals, however, ultimately exposes them.

You either DON'T understand, or REFUSE to understand these nuances. But, be assured, we understand perfectly, and do not wonder why.

Tamils in Canada vote for independent homeland in Sri Lanka

In the latest such vote to be held by Tamils of Sri Lankan descent living abroad, members of the diaspora across Canada overwhelmingly voted “yes” on a referendum held Saturday calling for an independent homeland.

By Nachammai Raman Correspondent December 20, 2009
Montreal, Quebec

Tamils of Sri Lankan origin across Canada overwhelmingly voted “yes” on a referendum held Saturday calling for an independent homeland in the island nation.

It's the latest in a series of such votes held in Sri Lankan Tamil communities in Europe and North America, and organizers say the purpose is to apply international pressure on Sri Lanka to devolve more autonomy to Tamils.

Political analysts say this goal is unlikely to be achieved anytime soon, but that the votes may help reinvigorate the pro-Tamil Tiger diaspora in the wake of the Tigers' devastating military defeat this year after decades of fighting.

“The referendum has been organized by groups supportive of the Tamil Tigers,” says Dr. Narenda Subramanian, associate professor of political science at McGill University, who specializes in South Asia. “They’ll use this as a way of revitalizing their pro-Tiger network outside Sri Lanka. They may be laying the foundation for a transnational Eelam government, a legitimate self-governing authority outside Sri Lanka that will one day take over a future Tamil state in Sri Lanka - in the event that ever happens.”

According to Mr. Subramanian, the decades-long war, which ended last May, only destroyed the Tamil Tigers’ military capacity and activities in Sri Lanka. He says the Tamil Tiger network outside Sri Lanka is still fairly intact, operating covertly under different front organizations even in countries like Canada that have slapped a ban on the rebel group.
Canada vote only the latest

Canada is the third country to be holding such a referendum this year. It is home to the largest Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora in the world, an estimated 150,000 people.

The first referendum was held last May in Norway, which is one of the few Western countries that hasn’t banned the Tamil Tigers. Norway brokered the 2002 cease-fire between the Tamil Tiger rebels and the Sri Lankan government, which was torn up formally in Jan. 2008.

The diaspora in France voted on the referendum just last weekend.

The turnout was high in all three countries, according to the pro-Tamil Tiger website Tamilnet, which also reports that the vote was 99 percent “yes” in all three countries.

In the referenda, people of Sri Lankan origin were asked to vote “yes” or “no” on the following statement: “I aspire for the formation of an independent and sovereign state of Tamil Eelam in the north and east of the island of Sri Lanka on the basis that the Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka make a distinct nation, have a traditional homeland, and a right to self-determination.”

The statement itself is drawn from a 1976 resolution adopted by Tamil political parties in Sri Lanka in the face of deteriorating minority rights before the island nation plunged into civil war in 1983. Sri Lankan Tamils only make up about 18 percent of its population. The origins of the ethnic conflict go back to the changing of the country’s language and education policies to favor the Sinhalese majority.
Does the vote matter?

On why it’s necessary to hold a diaspora referendum now on a resolution that was drafted 33 years ago, Senthan Nada, one of the organizers and spokesperson for the Toronto-based Coalition to Stop the War, says it’s a touchstone to determine the future path. “The 1976 resolution calling for an independent state - is this still the way to go forward to find a peaceful and lasting solution? That’s what we want to establish by a democratic vote.”

Ananda-USA said...

Tamils in Canada vote for independent homeland in Sri Lanka

...continued...

The referenda will have no effect in Sri Lanka, says Madras-based political analyst Ramani Hariharan, a former intelligence officer working on the Sri Lanka dossier for the Indian army.

“The Sri Lankan government won’t comment on this because they don’t want to recognize this as being influential," says Mr. Hariharan. "It won't change anything in the country.” He says the Sri Lankan government is using its own strategy to win over conciliatory elements of the Tamil diaspora.

According to Hariharan, the real motive of the referenda may just be to fill the leadership vacuum created by the death of rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and lay claim to the vast financial empire the Tamil Tigers have worldwide. “The Tigers want to create some sort of legitimacy to revive the movement,” he says.

But Nada says that holding the referenda in countries like Canada, rather than in Sri Lanka among its Tamil citizens, is important. “From the viewpoint of the community here, the Tamils in Sri Lanka are disenfranchised," says Nada. "We are trying to voice their concerns because they can’t talk freely.”

Lalitha Chandra, who uses a fictitious name in the fear of reprisal for her views, abstained from voting. She has misgivings about where all this will lead because she has seen her family suffer from the civil war that claimed nearly 100,000 lives.

“I just want peace," she says. "After all these years of fighting, we know that the Sri Lankan government is dead against separation. So, realistically speaking, I don’t know how it’s going to happen, because any solution has to be worked out together between the Sinhalese and the Tamils.”

Sarath Fonseka, who has entered the presidential fray on an anti-corruption platform, misused the official satellite phones to make personal overseas calls to the US in particular and used Army Welfare Fund to settle the bills,
Telephone-gate, as the scam is described in army circles, related to the period when the General was posted to Jaffna and Vanni as a Major General and amounted to between Rs. 2 million and Rs. 2.7 million. Mangal Samaraweera as the posts and telecommunication minister of the day ‘gifted’ an Inmarsat Satellite phone to the General to remain in touch with Colombo from Jaffna.
General Fonseka did not surrender the Satphone when he was transferred out of Jaffna on the orders of the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe to Vanni and that he had taken the phone to his new place of posting. This deprived his successor Maj Gen A. Wijendra of the Satphone facility, as overall forces commander in Jaffna.
Geneeral Fonseka was accused of misusing satellite phone - the highest number of calls he made through this phone was to the United States of America, the duration of one call being a whopping 110 minutes and 48 seconds that cost Rs.33, 793.84.

August 2000 – Rs. 901, 020.94
September 2000 811,886.76
October 2000 – Rs. 605, 826.99

December 2000 – Rs. 131, 630.27
Army headquarters was aware of the ‘misuse’, and in 2005 raised several pertinent questions. The then army chief, General SHS Kottogoda cautioned Fonseka against audit objections to the misuse of Satphone.
‘Having gone through the detail (of the) bills which are attached, I find that no local calls have been taken but all are overseas calls’, the chief wrote to Fonseka, who was a Major General then.
And saying ‘These Satellite phones were made available for Comd’s of SF (J) and (W) to be used in an emergency if all other comms would fail and for urgent op reqmts. However I find that calls taken during the months indicated at para 2 are all overseas calls and has no relevance to op trqmts of the Army’.
Army chief, General SHS Kottogoda refused to settle the bill to avoid audit objections later. ‘… a sit has risen where Army is unable to settle these bills as these calls cannot be certified as official calls. Further this may lead to other audit queries as well’, he sternly told the Fonseka.

Expert Inspector said...

The tone and tenor of the letter clearly indicated that the army would not settle the bill and Fonseka himself must foot the bill. It is possible that amount could have been deducted from the Major General’s salary but for a turnaround in his fortunes – towards the end of 2005, just 20-days before his retirement, Fonseka was appointed Army Chief on the recommendation of the the Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
According to many serving and retired army officers, if these calls in question were indeed personal calls, then Sarath Fonseka has a moral obligation to settle the relevant bill with his own money.
Sarath Fonseka made use of the Welfare Fund of the Army to settle these telephone bills.
Senior officials attached to the defense ministry admitted they were aware of the misuse of the satellite phone facility granted to the Fonseka but refused to comment further.
Brigadier Sarath Karunaratne, while commenting that the officer accused of misusing the phone facility was Major General Fonseka, said he was not sure as to what action would be meted out by the ministry of defense against him.
He admitted he was aware of the issue, but said that it was yet to be discussed by the defense hierarchy.
“You see, this has never happened in the past. This is an abnormal case don’t know what to do,” he pointed out.
He explained that under the normal procedure an inquiry into such as is should be conducted.
Details of the bills when he was using the same in Jaffna, sources say, may also be running into several more millions rupees.
More and more voices are being heard these days that a strong backing from the political leadership to the army could have seen the end of LTTE menace quite a while ago. Some analysts even contend that the leadership had used the armed forces to achieve its political ends. Interestingly, this view is shared by a former army commander Gen SHS Kottogoda, the predecessor to Gen Sarath Fonseka.

General Kottogoda told ‘When I was the Army Commander the political leadership was not ready to fight to finish the Tamil Tiger terrorists. The political leadership was dilly dallying and wavering. It was only interested in making use of the armed forces to gain extra political mileage’, he recalled.
Asked whether he too could have led the army to victory with political backing, the former army chief replied in the affirmative.
‘In the event, if I too received a steady unwavering political commitment and support, I could have finished the Tigers in double quick time’, he stated. And added: ‘Why I alone, any mediocre army commander like Sarath Fonseka could have easily defeated the Tigers’.

SL Patriots,

I have the freedom to hold an opposing position and also voice a diametrically opposite thinking.

I have been a tax payer in this beautiful country since 1992 - before that I was a tax payer in the US and was given tax credits too.

What I cannot fathom is MR lack of good governance. The middle class and professionals in Sri Lanka have been squeezed from all sides. I represent that class 100%.

I was with MR, GR and the rest against VP, Ranil and Mangala during the war. I am placing my best with SF because MR has gone into a different orbit. He not only looks "puffed up", his interests are not in the citizenary of this country. I am not with Ranil, Managala or any of the JPB. (I saw SB as a JPB in Sam's list but is he there now that he is towing MR?).

I would have voted MR if he gave us a dividend after the war. When he gives ministerial posts to every Tom, Dick and Harry, at every turn, it shows that he does not even care a tuppence for his subjects.

By the way, I am Sinhalaya, a Buddhist and I value my sinhala identity though I am also a yankee johnny.

I really do not care who wins the PE as far as MR is beaten neck and crop or just scrapes through with the narrowest of margins to make him work his ass off in his second term.

Ananda-USA, I will honor the bet. If I lose, I will send you the box of tea from the Tea Board. I will throw in a second one for your decency and the respect you show your antagonist but I am really not that.

PS: Moshe, please do not get to the level of Asithri to vent your anger at SF. BTW, "Shanty Paraya" is a sentence that I enjoyed reading.

can't understand what you are infering????

asithri has been simply fantastic in his attacks on traitors and i consider it an honour if i too am so effective in beating the shit out of them.

BTW i called a fellow blogger "...paraya" mainly bcos he supports a paraya (JPB - jathiye para balla) -SF. otherwise he is a good guy. its the ACT not the mere ryme that is important.

how can SF clean up the system when ALL the worst crooks are with him????

1. CBK
2. RW

these are the biggest crooks. anyone would agree. SF is just desperate to grab power and continue his corrupt practices.

using the army welfare till to pay his million rupee telephone bill is the worst anyone can do. army welfare money goes to benefit poor, disabled soldiers!!!

2.7 million rupees would have been otherwise used to build 4 houses for four ranaviru families!!

CURSE this corrupt fonseka/tillakaratne families for the grave moral crimes they have committed STILL talk about corruption!!

Moshe Dyan said...

do you honestly think that chandrika would join SF, if she is convinced that there would be no corruption???????

would she risk her life and dignity and come back to SL JUST to do politics again without any money??????

come on mate. this bitch's past does not confirm that.

between the SF and MR camps, the SF camp is more corrupt.

and a good sufficient win for MR at GE,

in the hope that they both understand that voters cannot be fooled.

After both elections, there should be a non-political "conscince movement" in Sri Lanka crticising both the opposition and the Government.

We need a non-political movement to raise awareness of the voters which is against slanders, corruption and mud-slinging of both sides, a citizen movement.

I hope this non-political movement will not be sold for the best price.

Only price they are looking for must be good will of the citizens.

Wishful thinking? May be.But we have to wish otherwise..

Max Headroom said...

To Moshe Dayan and others,

Chandrika is not coming into help SF but for Mangala and with a long term plan. Funny you have not read that!

She is promoting her son Vimukthi, the Vet for Gampaha from UNF in a GE, to go head to head with BR.

Furthermore, why did GR overlook SF corruption when opting for him as Army Commander; he would have known about telephone bills and SFs appetite for carnal pleasures because GR was in the Army. With all that baggage, GR overlooked Maj. Gen. Shantha Kottegoda and gave in to SF. So with that decision GR became a corrupt person like SF - not giving way to the most qualified and for selecting a corrupt person to lead the Army. But he took that option for a different reason ....

There was a rumour circulating sometime back that GR and SF were really looking forward to be "partners in marriage": SF second daughter was marked by GR for his son. Somewhere down the road, SF's daughter spurned the suitor and thereafter GR lost all interest in SF.

You know what I want to see? If GR is going to be hauled up to Hague or where ever, they should get hold of SF too. Then we would really know who was more ruthless as these two blokes were "brothers in arms" during the war with LTTE.

In the recent SF interview with Daily Mirror, SF refers to GR not informing him about DHS interviewing GR for two hours in NYC when he went to attend the special sessions of the UN GA. We really do not know what has happened but we get the impression that GR would have setup SF to take the flak. DHS would believe the US citizen more than a PR.

One other question that begs an answer and everybody is ignoring is that: how come a citizen of another country (even with dual citizenship), hold such an important position in the GOSL. I have found that employement with the US government is only available to US citizens: by birth or naturalization and no where it indicates that dual citizens could apply for such a job. Then MR has violated the very constitution that he is expected to safeguard, by appointing his brother, a Sri Lankan who has renounced Sri Lankan citizenship to get US citizenship.

You see folks, I am a fool to come and argue my thinking here. The best thing for me to do would be: "Mind your own bloody business to get on with life without criticising others as they are fattening themselves at our expense".

I cannot prevent or eradicate these ills but I need to endure to see through life so that I would not have failed in my responsibilities (to my family). The larger nation would take care of itself.

With that epilogue, I call it quits for the time being but I shall return on January 27th to honor my debt to the bet.

Theruwange Saranyi! May God Bless you all!

Moshe Dyan said...

max,

Some time ago paid attention to them. Maybe they were saying the truth.

Then the stories came crashing one by one.

The LTTE left East since there was a corrupt deal between the Government and the LTTE. The LTTE was allowed to take their heavy weapons.

How can this be true. For what reason the LTTE retreated?

They said for money.

I laughed. I knew that this logic could only be ture If I had taken truck load of heroin.

Then two weeks later, those weapons were found.

This is the turth about Mangala and Ranil clan.

This is only one story.

They actually wanted the LTTE to win for their greed of power and other selfish needs.

Now you ask me to believe that GR and MR are corrupt.

May be they are.

But what's their track record is that they more trustworthy than those from Ranil/Mangala clan and anybody who embraces them.

This was one such story.

I believe that GR and MR made wrong choice with SF. They made that mistake since they had single aim.

I can easily forgive them for that. Still if this SF dictatorship happens I will hold MR and GR responsible.

I am a Sri Lankan Patriot TOTALLY OPPOSED to a separate racist apartheid state of EELAM only for Tamils, but I CARE VERY MUCH that our fellow Tamil Citizens in Sri Lanka are treated with respect, and are allowed to enjoy their FULL RIGHTS as Sri Lankan citizens.

The Eelam war was fought against a MONSTROUS LTTE terrorist movement; it was NOT FOUGHT against law-abiding Tamil people in general.

NO person in Sri Lanka will have an IOTA of special rights based on RACE, CASTE, LANGUAGE, or CREED.

It is up to us, the SINHALA people of Sri Lanka, to protect our TAMIL brothers and sisters, and welcome them back into the Sri Lankan fold.

There shall be ONE Sri Lankan NATION, ONE Sri Lankan PEOPLE with ONE SHARED Sri Lankan DESTINY; NO EELAMS WHATSOEVER!

"Former UNP parliamentarian Ali Zahir Moulana has returned to Sri Lanka after leaving the country in 2004 for facilitating the escape of the then renegade LTTE Eastern Commander Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Colonel Karuna, now a government Minister.

Moulana said he was happy to return to the country and support the President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his presidential bid as he is the only Head of Government who worked for the welfare of the minorities.

The former UNP MP returned to the country on an invitation by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to work for the upcoming presidential election. He was received by a large gathering including ministers and government supporters.

He said he left the country in 2004 when he and many others faced death threats and there is no such fear now.

Moulana was a UNP national list parliamentarian from the Eastern city of Batticaloa when he aided Colonel Karuna to escape to Colombo. He was instrumental in orchestrating Karuna's split from the LTTE leader Prabhakaran.

He resigned from the UNP following the revelation of his connection in the escape of the LTTE renegade commander and his associates from the East to Colombo and left the country afterwards.

The split Moulana aided eventually led to the complete annihilation of the terrorist outfit LTTE in Sri Lanka."

mark my word, now ponnasikka will start mud slinging karuna.

ali zahir moulana is the MOST popular UNPer in the east. if he remains committed to MR, UNP will be routed shamefully in batti and ampara. but his very high popularity is a national thing which is likely to be capitalized by the govt to tilt the scales even further.

No division of Tamil Nadu: Jaya

December 15, 2009

CHENNAI: “On no account, Tamil Nadu should be divided.

My party will strongly oppose those who propose this idea,’’ AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa said emphatically on Monday.

Answering queries of mediapersons at the airport on her return after completing the first leg of her campaign for the December 19 byelections in the State, Jayalalithaa said ``no State in the country should be divided. This is the firm stand of the AIADMK.’’ On Sunday, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi also rejected the suggestion of PMK founder S Ramadoss that Tamil Nadu could be bifurcated, saying that neither the DMK nor the people of Tamil Nadu would accept the idea. Responding to a question, Jayalalithaa accused the Centre of being hasty in taking a decision on the Telangana issue. “The Central government had acted without any forethought by making an announcement about the creation of Telangana state. By this move, the Centre had created a big problem,’’ she said.

On Karunanidhi’s charge that the proposed demonstration of the AIADMK at New Delhi scheduled for December 18 was unnecessary, Jayalalithaa said her party was justified in going ahead with the agitation as the Centre had not withdrawn the Marine Fisheries Bill till now. “Union Minister Sharad Pawar as well as Karunanidhi have only said that the Bill would not be introduced in the current session of Parliament. But the AIADMK demands outright withdrawal of the Bill. Since there has been no such assurance from the Centre, the AIADMK will go ahead with the agitation,’’ she said.

Jayalalithaa was optimistic about the AIADMK winning the by-elections to Tiruchendur and Vandavasi Assembly constituencies. She charged that the ruling DMK was indulging in blatant violation of the election rules. Despite all these obstacles, the AIADMK would win the by-elections, she added.

No need to bifurcate TN: Thangkabalu

December 20, 2009

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K V Thangkabalu on Saturday said there was no need for bifurcating the State as demanded by some political parties.

Addressing media persons here, he said the demand was based purely on caste basis and his party would stand for a united state.

‘‘The development is reaching uniformly throughout the state. The state is very peaceful. There is no need to bifurcate the state,’’ he said and added that the bifurcation demand by certain parties was unjustified.

When pointed out about the Congress party’s stand on the Telangana issue, he would only say that his party would stand by ``whatever decision taken by the people of AP.’’

Asked about the Marine Fisheries Bill, he said he had written to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Agriculture Minister on the issue. Thangkabalu said the Centre has decided to hold discussions with all stakeholders to reach a consensus and deferred the introduction of the bill.

Protests continue in Andhra over Telangana

December 21, 2009

HYDERABAD: Protests and shutdowns against the proposed division of Andhra Pradesh continued in many parts of the state for the 11th consecutive day Monday.

A shutdown is being observed in most parts of Rayalaseema region and some areas in coastal Andhra while leaders of various political parties continued their indefinite hunger strikes.

For the second consecutive day, Kadapa district witnessed a complete shutdown to protest the arrest of Congress legislator Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, who continued his fast in a hospital. Vivekananda Reddy, brother of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was arrested and shifted to hospital Saturday.

Shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in Chittoor and Anantapur districts in response to the strike call given by various political parties and groups opposing the proposal to form a separate Telangana state.

In Guntur district, the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) called a shutdown to protest the arrest of its leaders who were on indefinite hunger strike.

Demonstrations, road blockades, rallies and hunger strikes were also continuing in Kurnool, Nellore, Prakasam, Krishna, East Godavari, West Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vijiyanagaram and Srikakulam districts.

In Anantapur, three TDP legislators continued their 'fast unto death' in hospital. The condition of a fasting TDP legislator of Krishna district turned serious and he was shifted from Vijayawada to a hospital in Guntur.

Vijayawada was still tense as Congress MP L. Rajagopal, who disappeared from a government-run hospital Sunday night, remained untraced.

Ever since the central government decided to initiate the process for the formation of Telangana, the rest of Andhra Pradesh has been witnessing violent protests, paralysing transport, business, trade and educational institutions.

The central government had made the announcement on Telangana Dec 9 following a 11-day hunger strike by Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao and mass protests in the region, which includes Hyderabad.

Hyderabad and the other nine districts of Telangana, however, have remained calm since Dec 9.

Lankan fishermen pose ‘big security risk'

G Saravanan
December 20, 2009

CHENNAI: The fact remains unequivocal: Sri Lankan fishing trawlers are of late increasingly intruding into Indian territorial waters. Only its fallout varies, depending on your profession.

For the Indian Coast Guard, these boats pose big security risk — its eastern region has already sounded an alarm.

Tamil Nadu’s mechanised fishing boat owners, on the other hand, are worried about losing the marine wealth to outsiders, who allegedly intimidate them too.

According to sources, 2009 has, up to December 18, reported confiscation of 125 such boats along with detention of 657 Sri Lankan fishermen. A senior Coast Guard official told Express that three Lankan boats, which were recently seized near Puducherry and southern Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota, were highly sophisticated ones. They were made of fibreglass hull and equipped with GPS, radar and long-range HF frequency communication capable of worldwide communication.

While the recently arrested Sinhala crew of the boats also spoke Hindi and English, having had worked in Dubai where they befriended Pakistanis too. In fact, one of these boats was impounded for the second time—before it was repatriated to the island-nation on November 19.

The Chennai-Thiruvallur- Kancheepuram District Mechanised Boat Fishermen Association claimed the Lankan fishermen instilled fear in the Indians. “Deep-sea skirmishes are common,” said association’s M E Raghupathy.

/NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa, who had participated in a seminar organized by the old Anandians, had been hooted by down several invitees, Lanka News Web learns.

The old Anandians have reportedly organized a special event on the last school day of the third term. Wimal had attended the event as a special invitee and he had been invited to the event following an order received by the Principal to do so, as Wimal’s son attended the school.

However, Wimal was informed by the organizers to make a non political speech at the event. Yet, a few minutes after commencing his speech,
he had started to praise President Mahinda Rajapaksa and various sounds have started to emerge from all corners of the hall. One of the organizers had then stood and asked that the speech be made without any political references.

Wimal had responded that politics was involved in everything and continued his speech praising Rajapaksa.

A little while later, some one had hooted and Wimal had said, “There are some low grade people here.” As soon as he uttered the words, the hall was filled with the sound of hooting and some had even started to throw paper balls at Wimal. The ministerial security personnel providing security for him had then surrounded him and moved him away from the hall.

The Principal had requested every one present not to allow the story to go out of the school as it would give a negative image to the school’s image. Most of the people present had said, “It is bringing people like this into school that gives it a negative image.”/

I always wanted the speediest release of refugees without risking National security.

There is no point of releasing them
just to be nice and then leave room for another cruel war.

Also I feel that the Government did not want to keep them any longer than necessary even though I think It could have been quickened a little bit.

It is foolish for the West to think that the Government is releasing them because of international pressure. The time frame is much closer to what they promised earlier but if not for SF it could have happened earlier.

You are doing an excellent job in this blog. It's interesting to see when is the time you are going to put the word 'but'.

Go ahead !

Even now I have ifs and buts but the net sum of all of these ifs and buts, at least until GE is over, is "MR is the Man".

Now I put an if, see if you like it DW?

If MR become another SF/Ranil/Mangala I will call him SFRANILMANGALA and go against him but never to the side of RW/SF/Mangala unless they confess all of their sins. That means only if they, in public, shed their Jarashokaship and give emphatic reasons to believe that they are attaining Dharmashokaship I might have a look at them.

According to quantum mechanics there is a probablility (tiny)a bullet can go through a tissue paper without making a hole.

To see this happen you need to wait an eternity, perhaps.

JVP meantime lay their ground work to take back Mannar basin oil exploration plots given to India and also Trinco Oil tank complex back from India.

The more and more I read about news, I am getting closer to convince myself that what SF is doing a mistake for himself and the country.

It appears he has been driven by those who are having issues with the government and these people don't really care about us as a nation.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything good to say about the government either.

The fight between Rajapakse brothers and SF will be played out in the international arena and I am sure someone will get hurt in a legal arena.

The final nail in the coffin came to me by listening to speeches of RW and Mungy about our victory over Thoppigala on youtube again.

The old monkey with gray hair has a new trick SF to grab his executive PMship. Both SF and RW are trying to play each other and SF will be the sour loser at the end since he hasn't learned to master old SL politician yet. There is so much you can do with being direct and arrogant.

We will have the same president in 2010, perhaps some economic growth and no significant improvement to our standard of living.

RW, SF, and the TNA will be reduced to IRRELEVANCE and will endup barking at the POLITICAL PERIPHERY trying to get a war crimes trial going in collusion with foreigners.

They will have NO IMPACT on the DEVELOPMENT of the country.

Fonseka's Treachery Exposed

.........

UN questions government on Fonseka’s allegations

The UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Summary or Arbitrary Executions, has asked the government to provide an explanations with regard to the circumstances of the death of 3 senior LTTE cadres and their families during the last stages of the military operations.

The request for explanations follows the recent statement made by Gen (Rtd) Sarath Fonseka an opposition candidate in the forthcoming Presidential election, alleging that such killings had taken place, in an interview with The Sunday Leader of Dec. 13, 09, the President's media unit said.

The letter by the UN Special Rapporteur, Phillip Alston, addressed to Mrs. Kshenuka Senewiratna, the Permanent representative of Sri Lanka to the UN Office in Geneva states,

“Theses allegations were made by the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army at the time of the events and subsequent Chief of Defence Staff (now retired) Genral Gardihewa Sarath Chandralal Fonseka, in an interview to the newspaper The Sunday Leader. The accounts of journalists embedded with the SLA 58th Brigade confirm some of the alleged circumstances of the death of Messers. Nadeshan, Pulidevan and Ramesh and their families”.

The government is making a careful study of the UN Rapporteur’s letter, prior to a formal response, and any action that may be necessary.

Fonseka's Treachery Exposed

.............

Here is the text of the letter sent by UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary execution to Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations office at Geneva

18 December 2009

Excellency,

I have the honour to address you in my capacity as Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial summary or arbitrary executions pursuant to General Assembly resolution 60/251 and to Human Rights Council resolution 8.3.

I write to your Excellency's Government with regard to the circumstances of the death of three senior representatives of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Mr. Balasingham Nadeshan, Mr. Seevaratnam Pulidevan and Mr. Ramesh, as well as of members of their families, in the night of 17 to 18 May 2009.

According to information I have received:

On 17 May 2009, the day before your Excellency's Government announced that its forces had completely defeated the LTTE. Messrs, Nadeshan, Pulidevan and Ramesh were trapped with other senior cadres of the LTTE in a small area north of Vellamullivaikkal. Through intermediaries they sought to establish contact with your Excellency's Government to inquire how they could surrender to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA). The reply, coming from the Secretary of Defence in your Excellency's Government and from a Members of Parliament who is at the same time a senior adviser to the President, and conveyed through the intermediaries, was that they should walk towards the positions of the SLA in a way that made their intentions clear and holding a white cloth. The Commander of the SLA 58th Brigade, the unit on the front line with the last LTTE position, however, received a telephone call from the Secretary of Defence instructing him to order his forces to shoot those surrendering. When Messrs. Nadeshan, Pulidevan and Ramesh walked towards the SLA positions carrying white cloths in the first hours of 18 May 2009, soldiers opened fire on them and killed them. An unspecified number of family members of the three men were killed as well.

These allegations were made by the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army at the time of the events and subsequent Chief of Defence Staff (now retired) General Gardihewa Sarath Chandralal Fonseka, in an interview to the newspaper The Sunday Leader. The accounts of journalists embedded with the SLA 58th Brigade confirm some of the alleged circumstances of the death of Messrs. Nadeshan, Pulidevan and Ramesh and their families.

While I do not wish to prejudge the accuracy of these reports, I would like to refer your Excellency's Government to fundamental legal rules applicable to all armed conflicts under international humanitarian law and human rights law.

Common Article 5 (applicable to armed conflict not of an international character) of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, to which your Excellency's Government is a party, dictates that "[p]ersons taking no active part in the hostilities, including members of armed forces who have laid down their and those placed hors de combat by sickness, wounds, detention or any other cause, shall in all circumstances be treated humanely [....]". To this end the following acts are and shall remain prohibited at anytime and in any place whatsoever with respect to the above-mentioned persons: (a) violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds".

Similarly, an authoritative study of customary international humanitarian law finds that attacking and killing persons who are recognized as hors de combat is prohibited. Persons hors de combat include anyone who clearly expresses an intention to surrender, provided he or she abstains from any hostile act and does not attempt to escape (Rule 47 0f the Customary Rules of International Humanitarian Law identified in the study of the International Committee of the Red Cross).

Fonseka's Treachery Exposed

......continued 2....

It is my responsibility under the mandate provided to me by the Human Rights Council to seek to clarify all cases brought to my attention. Since I am expected to report on the death of Messrs. Nadeshan, Pulidevan and Ramesh, as well as of the members of their families, I would be grateful for the cooperation and observations of your Excellency's Government. In particular in relation to the following questions:

1. Are the allegations summarized above accurate, If not so, please share the information and documents proving their inaccuracy.

2. What information does your Excellency's Government have on the family members of Messrs. Nadeshan, Pulidevan and Ramesh allegedly killed on 18 May 2009.

3. Please refer to the results of my military, police, judicial and other inquiry or investigation carried out in relation to the allegations summarized above.

I undertake to ensure that your Excellency's Government's response to each of these questions is accurately reflected in the report I will submit to the Human Rights Council for its consideration.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Philip Alston
Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions

[There are certain things that worries me like huge cabinet and incompetent thug ministers, Mihin air etc.]

Good for you, brother .. I like your reason for not taking the offered bet.

With regard to corruption and the huge cabinet, you have to recognize the fact that all that was accomplished to date by the MR-GOSL, including winning the war decisively, was done with a PAPER THIN parliamentary majority. He had to get all of these political animals on his side, in order to get that HIGHEST PRIORITY JOB DONE.

In addition, everywhere I go in Sri Lanka, I see major infrastucture development taking place: Roads, Highways, Ports, Airports, Flyovers, Factories, Industrial Zones, Power Plants .. and ALL OF THAT just when we ended the war that was destroying the motherland. The unemployment is around 4% when unemployment globally is very high, the stock market is booming, and foreign investment houses are willing to lend more money than Sri Lanka wants to take as loans!

I cannot point to ANY COUNTRY that has weathered such a CIVIL WAR so well, and is springing back so fast to economic vibrancy.

MR is NOW ASKING THE PEOPLE, on the basis of those FACTUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS .. NOT MERE PROMISES that the opposition is making .. for a 2/3 majority in parliament (and a healthy majority for himself in the PE to ensure carryover to the GE), so he DOES NOT HAVE TO PLACATE any and all in order to preserve political stability and can divest his government of all of the compromises he had to make in time of war.

I encourage you to read about all of the similar compromises President Abraham Lincoln had to make during the American Civil War, to hold on to his PAPER THIN hold on the Congress. Until the news of the Union Victory at Gettysburg came through on the eve of the elections, it was NOT CLEAR he would be able to continue as President and win the US Civil War. Today, all US citizens live in peace and security in ONE POWRFUL COUNTRY, respected by both its friends and enemies, directly as a result of his vision and courage in pursuing that war with the utmost vigor; a passionate committment to holding together his country that made him the MOST REVILED of US Presidents of his time.

Likewise, MR has earned our undying gratitude by holding together our country. To do that in the midst of treacherous unpatriotic politicians who cared for nothing but power, he surrounded himself with his brothers .. who he could rely on to help him in this great patriotic effort.

I would have done the same thing .. and so did Dutu Gamunu with Saddha Tissa when he liberated our country in our storied past. Most leaders of post-independence Sri Lanka, on both sides of the aisle, did the same, when it was their turn. In the West, John F. Kennedy relied on Bobby and Ted Kennedy when he became president. When a job needs to be done, you choose the best most reliable tools, and MR's job was no ordinary job, it was the VERY SURVIVAL of the MOTHERLAND.

For the MR-GOSL,

the FIRST PRIORITY was to WIN the WAR

the SECOND PRIORITY was to WIN the WAR

the THIRD PRIORITY was to WIN the WAR

MR DID WIN the WAR and DELIVERED Peace and Security. He did more than that in preserving ECONOMIC STABILITY during that time, and initiating Rapid Development.

So, WHY can't we TRUST HIM AGAIN to deliver on government efficiency, reduced corruption, rapid development, and economic growth in the FUTURE as well?

I ask you, is there ANYONE INCORRUPTIBLE with the required STRENGTH OF CHARACTER that you know who can do a better job in the future than MR?

I am certain that your HONEST ANSWER will be a RESOUNDING No!

...........

Why should he not speak at Ananda College?

He was invited to speak there. He is a very good and effective speaker who makes much sense .. I have listened to him speak on the Youtube and in person .. many times .. so I know.

Werrawansa is a politician first, politician second, and politician last. Inviting him and expecting him to not talk politics .. especially in the midst of an election campaign .. is like inviting a Buddhist priest to speal and expecting him not to do a Dharma Deshanawa! They should not have invited him to speak at Ananda if they didn't want any political speeches!

I find Wimal Weerawansa to be a very impressive individual .. as many JVP-ers are. However, unlike many JVP people, Wimal is not a person who still wants to force the "Viplavaya" down other people's narrow throats. He presents, explains and debate .. using the force of argument instead of the argument of force to get his point across. I wish more JVP-ers would learn their politics from this man, instead of trying all their disruptive tactics setting various communities against each other.

With regard to the Anandians; I am sorry that the students of this great school did not see fit to hold their peace out of respect for themselves, if not for their invitee, and allow him to speak his mind unmolested.

When you are the Host, forbearance must be the watchword; kicking the guest in the face is rather boorish, don't you think?

In 1658, under Admiral Ryekloff van Goens; Don Michael de Fonseka accompanied his father in law in the expedition under which Jaffna was taken by the Dutch. Baldeus and other early writers speak of Don Manuel de Anderado as having rendered signal service to the Dutch."

"signal service to the Dutch"????

why not? the hague is where the war crimes tribunal is and the hague is in the 'dutchland'!!

the island editorial.

worth reading.

"Fonseka's venom fuels UN probeWhen the UNF government infamously committed the treacherous act of having a safe house of the army long rangers raided in 2002, exposing their identities and causing them to be eliminated by the LTTE, people called it the biggest ever betrayal of the Sri Lanka army. But, former Army Commander Gen. (Retd) Sarath Fonseka has done something equally bad. He has levelled a serious war crimes charge against the Sri Lanka army and the government and given a turbo boost to the on-going international human rights witch-hunt against this country.

The UN has called for explanation from the Sri Lankan government over Fonseka's claim in an interview with The Sunday Leader on Dec. 13, 2009 that some journalists embedded with the army had confided to him that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa ordered Commander of the 58 Division Maj. Gen. (then Brigadier) Shavendra Silva to kill the LTTE leaders who offered to surrender. Later, apparently having got cold feet, Fonseka said he had been misquoted, but the Sunday Leader editor told a television channel that she stood by her news item.

Last Sunday, Fonseka issued a clarification claiming that no LTTE leaders had tried to surrender carrying pieces of white cloth and that he took the full responsibility for what the army had done during the final phases of the war. However, he did not say in his 'clarification' that he had been 'misquoted' in the press interview at issue, though he had made a much advertised claim to that effect at news conferences last week. He reiterated in his ‘clarification’ that he had learned from some journalists that the Defence Secretary conveyed an illegal order to Maj. Gen. Silva but 'this illegal order was however not carried out at ground level'. Fonseka has also stopped short of specifying that 'illegal order'. He ought to tell the public what it was, now that he has made a 'revelation' of sorts.

Whatever Fonseka now may say about the war crimes charge he made against Gotabhaya and Shavendra, the die is cast! The UN has swung into action, as we report today. Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions Philip Alston has written to Sri Lankan Ambassador Extraordinary, Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Office at Geneva Kshenuka Senewiratne, seeking a clarification on Fonseka's allegation.

We pointed out in these columns, under the caption, An attempt at hara-kiri, on Dec. 14, that Fonseka's allegation posed a serious threat to Maj. Gen. Silva and Gotabhaya in that it was likely to be used against them internationally. The UN has already taken it up! The US has pledged its fullest support for the UN probe. How can Fonseka now boast that he thwarted an attempt by the Department Homeland Security during a recent US visit to elicit information on Gotabhaya as regards the war? He has made the worst allegation that a former army chief could level against a Defence Secretary and a junior officer!"

contd........

Moshe Dyan said...

...contd.

"The JVP revealed at a media briefing on Sunday, as we reported yesterday, that Gen. Fonseka had consulted it from the US on the Homeland Security request and it (JVP) had asked him to return to Sri Lanka immediately. This is ample proof that Fonseka was politically involved with the JVP while he was still in uniform, though he insisted after handing over his letter of resignation that he would not take to politics while he was in service. Having collaborated, while in uniform, with a bunch of anarchical political elements with a history of brutally murdering family members of security forces and police personnel who courageously defied an order by the southern terrorists to resign in the late 1980s, what moral right does Fonseka have to boast of military discipline and offer to discipline society?

Now that the UN has called for explanation, the government had better have Fonseka's allegation probed thoroughly because the newspaper concerned insists that he said what has been attributed to him. Else, the Defence Secretary and Maj. Gen. Silva will have that charge, though unsubstantiated, hanging like the Sword of Damocles. In this regard, it ought to be remembered that a British court recently issued a warrant to arrest former Israeli Foreign Minister and present Opposition Leader Tzipi Livini, who was to visit London, for alleged war crimes. She had to cancel her trip fearing arrest.

Although British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, a knight in shining armour crusading against human rights violations, was jolted by the warrant on Livini into calling for urgent changes to the British legal system to 'avoid this sort of situation from arising again', it is doubtful whether he and his government would ever hesitate to act on war crimes allegations against Sri Lankan politicians, bureaucrats and military personnel who happen to visit that country.

Finally, as for his venomous utterances coterminous with war crimes charges, Fonseka is engaged in a self-defeating exercise. He who recently boasted of his political symbol, Swan, claiming that it was a wise creature capable of separating milk from water, has cooked his goose in grand style by giving vent to his pent up anger at the expense of the military personnel and political leaders who liberated this country from the scourge of terrorism."

tamil madu elections were held on 13 may as planned. we all knew this from months b4.

SF also knew this. he planned to make a big commission by buying some weapons possibly for one last time from china. so he planned this trip to china to commence on may 11th.

this weapons shipment was cancelled by GR just like fonseka's other corrupt arms deals.

e.g. pakistani (defective) switch deal

e.g. al khalid tank deal.

anyway, SF planned this tri[ a long time ago. you cannot suddenly decide on 10th may to go abroad on 11th may. (but he could have EASILY cancelled the tour on may 11th!!!)

tamil madu elections were completed on 13th and by 16th the results were out. IC had won.

by then SLA had done most ground work and was waiting for the final assault.

without SF, SLDFs went ahead bcos it was necessary.

this angered SF. he felt like GR, VANNI OVERALL COMMANDER jagath jayasuriya, SS and others did this IN HIS ABSENCE.

"why couldn't they wait for me for the grand finale"??????

Sarath Fonseka, bowling from the Sarath Fonseka Pavilion end, passes Umpire Sarath Fonseka to bowl to Sarath Fonseka. Sarath Fonseka takes it on the half-volley and drives it past a diving Sarath Fonseka fielding at Cover Point. Sarath Fonseke runs across from wide mid-off to stop inches before it reaches the boundary, collects and sends in a perfect return to Wicket Keeper Sarath Fonseka who whips the bails off. It is a close call and Leg Umpire Sarath Fonseka refers the matter to third umpire Sarath Fonseka who declares that Sarath Fonseka has just made his ground. This leads to words being exchanged between Wicket Keeper Sarath Fonseka and Sarath Fonseka the batsman. Fisticuffs ensure and play is held up and Match Referee Sarath Fonseka is called on to arbitrate.

Time to start SL development (or economy) forum as well...

Current traffic problem should be foreseen in 1978 when we opened economy. But it took 2o years even to think about a good traffic/ infrastructure plan. What 4 presidents couldn't do in 25 years MR is doing in 4 years. (I mean not the war, building flyovers.)

I believe SL need good roads and good public transportation system - key for rapid development. GSL do it, people will do rest.

You said you left Sri Lanka when you were a school boy. How can you know about politics? You can follow up news from the internet but that is not the real thing. You have to live in Sri Lanka to understand real corruption, waste, power abuse.

What you say about the last days of the war is probably right. But people have other problems to worry about now. New Year is coming and people have no money even after winning the war. How can you explain that without corruption?

But still you are better than some insane lunatics like Swine Uranna.I can't understand his rubbish. His comments are like pissige palaa malla. Stick to defence you know otherwise you too will end up like him as a total lunatic.

Hello Moshe,

Thanks bro. It was a lucky guess. The third and last phase of balloting in the Indian election cycle ended on the 15th of March. No one would have known who was going to be the future PM of India on the 16th of March. I figured it had to be that two day window when there was chaos and confusion in India that President Rajapakse would decide the end game.
The President is a visionary to see through the complexities of the Indian political system and to identify the most appropriate window of opportunity.

Ninja,

But, as Moshe said, look at the difference in size (displacement, freeboard (height above water) and beam width) between the Princess Chrisanta and SLNS Sayura, reflecting the low-speed commercial cargo carrying function of the former, and the high-speed naval OPV function of the latter.

That is also why a cargo freighter is more easily converted, as I had suggested in an earlier post, to a large Attack Helicopter Carrier (similar to WW-II liberty ships carrier conversions) for Deep Ocean Patrolling than a typical naval fighting vessel such as the SLNS Sayura.

Heavy firing on India-Pakistan border

December 22, 2009

JAMMU: Indian and Pakistani border guards exchanged heavy firing at the international border between the two countries in Jammu and Kashmir Monday evening, an official said.

According to the Border Security Force (BSF), the Pakistani border guards opened fire on the Indian positions in Ramgarh sector in a bid to infiltrate terrorists, provoking the Indian side to retaliate.

"The firing from across (the border) seems to be a cover to facilitate infiltration (of militants)," a BSF official told IANS.

The firing started around 7.30 p.m. in Ramgarh, about 45 km southwest of here.

"The Pakistani firing was unprovoked," he said. Intermittent exchange of fire is still on, the official added.

Indian Army units along the international border have been alerted, defence sources said.

Still MR and few others have to do the work.

What would have happened if MR did not consolidate his parliament majority during the war?

We do not need more than 25 ministers. That is true.

What created this situation?

You cannot understand a tree completely if you cannot see the fores it comes from. This needs to be evaluated according to the context.

Many have explained this repeatedly. It is my feeling that no one in this blog relishes jumbo cabinet.

I, for one, though do not make case to give our country a basket case of confused delusional people. (No EP, NO I hold powers. I give this. EP is no more. I give that. Then Ranil says that we are electing a Bribery Commissioner (SF) and Executive Premier (Ranil). Come on!

There is a severe shortage of medicines in hospitals. Health minister buys old drugs from India. Now doctors have to do politics. Few patriotic doctors are staying in Sri Lanka without going abroad. They are now rethinking their role because of corruption. Doctors meet ordinary people everyday. You can't imagine their hardships. Some people are living thinking whether to live or die everyday because their earning is not enough to live. Government tax poor people with VAT to cover expenses. You have to live in Sri Lanka to understand this. Even after the war it is hopeless in Sri Lanka.

Ayesha had then been compelled to run out in her under garments. Finally, several Thuarnyata Hetak members had arrived in the scene in the

Ninja once you commented that many JVP diehards prefer dictatorship.

This is in blood and bone-marrow of Marxism.

Marxists believe that History makes the people not that people shape History. (May be for some extent they agree that people shape History, but largely History creates people and has its own course determined by absolute laws of Nature. We, the people need to be faithful to this course of History.

This is a sort of theology. Absolute objectivism and Theoology (Absolute Idealism are binded together here.

Since History has a definite course and only Marxists have properly understood it they are the only ones who can be faithful to the course of the History.

So it can be justified their desire for dictatorship. Revolution, they say, is the dictatorship of the working class. This 'working class' in the power sense is the general secretary of the party.

In this view people are midwives of the baby, the History; people cannot create History.

Three Sri Lankan Tamils in Australia plead guilty to charges of funding LTTE

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 22, Colombo: Three Sri Lankan Tamils in Melbourne, Australia are to plead guilty to charges of providing money to the proscribed terrorist organization, LTTE.

Aruran Vinayagamoorthy, 35, Sivarajah Yathavan, 38, and Arumugam Rajeevan, 43, of NSW, are to plead guilty to a single charge of providing money to the LTTE, their lawyers informed the Australian Supreme Court yesterday.

In addition, Vinayagamoorthy would plead guilty to providing radio transmitters to the terrorists.

The three men were arrested in a raid in May 2007 and charged of being members of a banned organization and providing financial support to the organization.

The prosecutors have charged the men with several counts but later dropped most of the charges. They are pleading guilty to single count of providing money to a banned organization.

The surprise lay in the fact that these gentlemen were not at all coy when it came to ridiculing the Government, the Security Forces and even the Army Commander.

Time has passed and things have become clearer. There is commonality that goes beyond ‘common objective’: a penchant for loose words. Talk, they say, is cheap. Not this cheap, I had thought. The point about cheap thought is that the cheaper it gets the higher the possible cost for other people. I am thinking about loose words uttered to the Sunday Leader and the price that the 58 Division is being made to pay (so much for the I-love-my-men talk!).

Talk is not only cheap, talk is entertaining. Listen to the man, the world’s greatest all-rounder, a one-man hit squad, a superman who can take all terrorists single-handed and break their necks. First it was ‘I did it without anyone’s help’. Then it was ‘Gota ordered my men,’ implying that Superman was just carrying out orders from a higher authority. Noticing that he had slipped, Superman rebounds, ‘I will take full responsibility’. In the rush, he says ‘I was directing operations from the battlefield’.

Wonderful! Imagine the Lt General in his fatigues, dust covered, dim-eyed, casting his superior eye on all things still and moving, the dead, the dying, the wounded, the wonderfully alive, etc. etc. Well, the man was in China when it all happened: that fact slipped his mind.

Anyway, this business of shooting people who were carrying white flags immediately boomeranged on Superman. A media conference was hurriedly called, there was a lot of re-twisting, retracting, mis-misinterpreting and Superman proved to the electorate that he’s just good with guns, not words.

Someone observed, ‘Who the hell cares what happens to Superman, who the hell cares about politicians with bloated-egos chockfull of malice, hatred and greed?’ Correct, who the hell really cares? We care more about the men who did battle, who lost their arms and legs, whose loved ones lost fathers, lovers, husbands, brothers and friends. We care more about the 58 Division than about men who are so hungry for power that they trip over their own tongues.

Superman might be aware that the foreign press which gleefully grabbed his statement to the Sunday Leader and splashed it all over the world did nothing of the sort with his ‘retraction’ (contested, we note, by the Sunday Leader). That he obviously does not care is irrelevant here. What matters is that in a world where trial-by-media is fast becoming the norm, those who were in the thick of the battle during the final days of the war (and not in China) have been left open to all kinds of violence by this lie so casually uttered by Superman.

“And over the bodies of the 58 Division shall I ride....”

.....continued...

Here’s what could happen. Major General Shavendra Silva (GOC 58 Division) or anyone in that division can be arrested while travelling abroad. It won’t matter that Sri Lanka is not a signatory to the Treaty of Rome. There are situations when it comes to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, where the Security Council has the authority to request the Chief Prosecuting Officer of the International Criminal Court to commission an investigation with a view to prosecution, for example. And countries which asset jurisdiction in respect of such crimes on a universal basis can and will proceed to arrest and charge such persons as are believed to have transgressed these limitations.

This is what happened to Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who was in London on holiday when a Magistrate in Spain, acting on an application, issued a warrant for his arrest. The British courts took it up.

No one in the 58 Division can plead for relief on account of ‘merely carrying out the orders of a superior’. That is not relevant when it comes to crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. This was clearly established in the Nuremberg trials after the Second World War; people were tried, sentenced to death and executed.

In the case of Pinochet the courts had to depend on circumstantial evidence.

In this case, we have a ‘competent authority’, an impeccable source: Superman. ‘Justice’ will be swift.

So what do we make of Superman’s claim that he will stand by his men? The man, well, the Superman, loves his men so much that he has thrown them to the enemy to be devoured? Why? Well, Superman has to satisfy his Super Ego, I can’t think of anything else. Reminds me of the Muhamalai debacle. There were 400 men who perished there. Men die in wars. Certain deaths however are unnecessary. More often than not such deaths are the result of an egomaniac’s single-minded arrogance and unpardonable lunacy.

Remember this name: 58 Division. They’ve been offered as sacrifice so Superman can win an election. Does not look very ‘Presidential’ to me.

Looks like the bulk of the IDPs will not Vote on Jan. 26-th.

Somebody has dropped the ball on this.

The GOSL will be accused, unfairly, of preventing them from voting.

20,000 IDPs have applied for voting, Sri Lanka Election Commissioner says

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Election Commissioner said already 20,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Menik Farm welfare village have applied for voting at the upcoming presidential election.

The IDPs are required to register for voting in the election on or before 24th of December.

Election monitoring groups in the country say that a majority of the IDPs may lose their voting rights as there is not enough time for them to register.

Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Risath Bathiyutheen said that Grama Seva officers in the welfare centers are assisting the IDPs to fill their applications for voter registration.

The Minister added that so far 25,000 Muslim IDPs in Puttalam have submitted their applications.

However, the Election monitoring group, Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CaFFE) says that not enough effort had been made to help the IDP to register. Less than 7,000 IDPs have registered with the authorities to vote at the presidential elections, the election watchdog says.

"Around 160 000 IDPs are eligible to vote and out of that only 1,600 from Jaffna and 5,000 from Vavuniya have registered. The IDPs should register before Wednesday in order to vote" CaFFE spokesman Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon said.

The government must pursue a more aggressive campaign to register the IDP voters, the spokesman urged.

December 22, 2009

The Re-awakening Project launched under the Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development Ministry with World Bank financial assistance has taken the initiative to rehabilitate the main four irrigation schemes in the Northern Province at a cost of Rs 835 million, Project Director P.H. Sugathadasa said. The project has allocated Rs 385 million for Giants Tank in Mannar district and Rs 200 million for Iranamadu in the Kilinochchi district.

Rs 200 million has been allocated for Vallukkaru in the Jaffna District and Rs 50 million for Pavatkulam in the Vavuniya district. The reconstruction work of all these projects other than Iranamadu are in progress with set time targets, he said. Sugathadasa added that Vallukkaru, Giants Tank and Pavatkulam irrigation schemes will be completed soon. The construction work of Iranamadu will commence with the clearance of landmines.
Allocations
* Giants Tank: Rs. 385 M

* Iranamadu: Rs. 200 M

* Vallukkaru: Rs. 200 M

* Pavatkulam: Rs. 50 M

With the completion of Giants Tank, it will provide irrigation facilities for 24,438 acres, Pavatkulam for 4,134 acres and Iranamadu for 9,560 acres.

These three irrigation schemes together will provide irrigation facilities for over 38,132 acres of land in the Northern Province, he said.

The Valukkaiaru scheme in the Jaffna district is a drainage scheme which prevents inflow of salt water and drains out flood waters into the sea.

All these irrigation schemes were badly damaged due to the war in the area during the past three decades.

Over 39,800 war affected families in the Northern Province will benefit with the completion of these four projects, Sugathadasa said.

MR's first election blunder.

he has appealed to the opposition to end hate politics.

this is a sign of his weakness and the inability to capitalise on his opponent's weakness.

SF, RW, mongal, etc. will NEVER end hate politics.

what MR should do is to play the HATE GAME which SF cannot play due to extreme hate boiling inside him that destroys SF from within.

this should be MR's trump card.

out of desperation SF comitts errors that can be used to further put him down.

arouse as much hatred in SF. he collapses under hate stress.

Moshe, dear chap, exactly. We have hit them so hard and utterly destroyed them. Now they are reduced to hallucinatory quasi-religious fantasies. Till this diaspora generation with hate filled minds are gone, the threat to us will exist though. So we need to be vigilant. That's why the current government has to be re-elected at least one more time.

Cheers!

Is this A-hole Vijitha Herath thinking that we are stupid? So to help the situation, the government got UN to send a specially written letter about allegations made by Fosnseka against our bravest. We got to be something that our government can ask UN to write letters to just to tarnish the image of Fonseka when a super powers like US, Russia, or China can't do that. These A-holes have become proverbial "Galay Reepu Balallu."

/Where is the crew of the Seized LTTE ship? How were the transfer documents executed? or is this a ship discarded for scrap?

(Lanka-e-News, Dec.22, 2009, 7.30PM)

Puttalam District UNP M.P. Range Bandara issuing a communiqué said, the Govt. ‘s claim that a LTTE ship “Princess Cresinta” has been seized and brought to SL is a fabrication by the Govt. to get political mileage at the Forthcoming Presidential elections.

The communiqué also says it is questionable whether this vessel belongs to the LTTE or to another Co. He alleged that this ship has been bought by cash payment from Djakarata, Indonesia by the intervention of a Sri Lanka Naval Officer. He challenged the Govt. to show evidence that the vessel is of the LTTE./

What does this kossa knows about ships? Did he check its cardboard ship or not? HIKz

Guys,

I am experimenting with some new ideas on preparing biodiesel from vegetable oils. Today I prepared my first batch of biodiesel at home, using Canola (i.e., rapeseed) oil as the feed oil.

I built a reactor vessel with a controlled temperature bath, and a mechanical stirrer. The byproduct glycerine (20% by vol) separated out nicely from the biodiesel overnight. I still have to do some chemical tests to assess the chemical purity of the biodiesel.

Tommorrow, I will run the new 6kW diesel generator that I bought for testing the biodiesel, off this batch of biodiesel.

Then, I will experiment with purifying the glycerine, and also converting the glycerine to ethanol.

The ultimate goal is to develop a highly effective process to produce biodiesel from algae grown in a bioreactor. If my experiments show promise, I might take a biodiesel manufacturing operation to Sri Lanka.

Mostly, I am having fun!
