Sarath's Guide of Hero to Zero in 21 Days - General commits political suicide

Two days ago, I was writing a post/comment on current political situation. I have been supportive to Mahinda over the time, and have been predicting his victory. Although the two matters of supporting and predicting are independant many took my posts for political propaganda. Nevertheless I promised that I'd write of any trends towards SF, if any were available.

Two days ago, I had facts to write about. It wasn't a wave as big as 2004 Boxing Day Clean Sweep, yet I met few people, notably non-UNPers, who were swaying for good reasons or bad reasons. General did almost nothing but Mahinda's stray dogs have been scoring for general. Let me note down what I observed, exactly until two days ago.

- People hated many stray dogs such as Mervyn/Hadda attacking general. Some patriorts in MR camp were shaky and kinda moving towards general for sympathy.

- Some lesser aware people were fooled by General's bogus campaign. There was a going rumor that "Executive President can abolish the rank Executive President". This is a blatent lie, but UNP lie machines have done their part. Many were deceived. And that covered the biggest flop in General's manifesto. Right or wrong general had scored.

- General's "something more than 13th" did not hit many minds. Many thought that "General will not betray nation" although he said so. Maybe many people wanted to give him a second chance.

- Defection of a top class political mastermind cum power hungry scum, S B Dissanayake. We all know he's like a compass turning towards power. I believe MR did the biggest mistake. For the short time goals he created the biggest risk for him - a Deva Datta among his ranks. Many ppl said that they don't want S B in ruling party, hence General gaining few votes.

- Scum S B calling General a "man like an animal", for which even I felt so disgusted.

- General's posters have been damaged or pictures are deformed. These kind of arrogant and stupid behavior taking every credit away from Mahinda.

I felt that at least few thousands from Mahinda's camp would have crossed.

And just when it was most critical, SF shot in his own butt and threw shit all over the house. First he made his remarkable comment on GR granting shoot-at-will commands against so called surrendering big Pussycats. Then he tried so synthetically and impractically to cover his nakedness leaving some endless questions in the mouths of many foreign parties.

Today, everything as two days ago, makes no sense. I need to rethink on my post. Few facts that arrived in.

- General did his first major betrayal. No matter what bad treatment he received, he is beyond all freedom to issue such news, had it even been true. There is a code of conduct, or ethical bond not to put the men of his previous command in trouble.

- And then he tried recovering, but simply told us that he, then Commander of Army, happened to believe in rumors about his own junior ranks as stated by some stray journalist [who had no guts to write it in public]. This is an utter mess.

- Imagine Gotabhaya Rajapakse ordered this killing of the leaders, bravo, the way to go.  Had we left the trio to get away, today the pussycats will be running under their command, and many 100s of soldiers civilians and pussycat hostages die on every passing day.

- Why should we allow a free passage for some masterminds whom scrificed poor school chrldren as cannon fodder? What assurance do you have that they are not using the white flags to launch a major attack? Why so late for surrender? So wasn't it so great if Gota ordered this, instead of allowing white masters to help pussycats once again?

General just told the whole nation that it was Gota, not him, who held a firm hand against Pussycats, hence winning the war for us. And he lost almost all of his worth in saying so.

And right now, I see a major shake in the patriotic support base of SF. For the first time, most initial supporters are considering their support. Most people who gave him a second chance for "more tahn 13th" are in the mood of deserting him.

It was all lost in one shot. Unless Mahinda's stray dogs score another own goal for General, this will remain the biggest damage by far to his campaign - an almost political suicide. Lots of damage control going, mainly with JVP who has better sense than UNP/Mangala, but little too late. Sunday Leader leads the damage as usual.

It is very non-defence like to discuss the porgress of Presidential capmapign here. But it is all the more defence related when a supposed to be responsible former commander betray his team with true or fake stories like this. As long as Army is taken for political mileage, the matter is defence related, and of the highest interest of national security.

And it is no longer common political mud slinging. What should await the General is a case in court for treason. Whatever you did for nation does not suffice to save you after this level of betrayal.

/It is I who gave orders for the LTTE leaders to surrender with white flags :but the LTTE shot them –Kohona says

(Lanka-e-News, Dec.22, 2009, 8.40PM)

It was Palitha Kohona, when he was the Foreign Ministry secretary who instructed the LTTTE Police chief B. Nadesan and chief of the Peace secretariat of the LTTE, S. Pullidevan to surrender to the Army carrying white flags with them.

Although the Govt. made a big din about a statement allegedly made by the Opposition common Presidential candidate Gen, Fonseka as reported by the Sunday leader newspaper on the 13th as a betrayal by the General, the Govt. has not given any publicity to the enunciations of Kohone in that connection.

Palitha Kohone had told a France news service, AFP on 21 May 2009 that when they tried to surrender coming forward, they were shot at from behind.

The IRC spoke to me and told the Two LTTE cadres wanted to surrender. II asked them to go forward slowly with white flags towards the army without any show of aggression or threat. However when they tried to advance forward they were shot by the LTTE from behind.

However, a second Diplomatic source who refused to speculate on the circumstances of their deaths, commented that Sri Lanka is one big violation of the Geneva conventions. The LTTE Int. chain co ordinator Pathmanathan stated, when the two, Pullidevan and Nadesan abiding by instructions carried white flags and tried to advance towards the 58th regiment of the SL army, they were shot and killed./

Expert Inspector said...

In the early stages Fonseka won waves of sympathy when the Tiger suicide bomber tried to get him. He was a battle-hardened soldier and his courage was as great as his ego. But it is his ego that finally brought him down. His ego was such that he refused to recognize the prime source of his power and success. It came essentially from his rapport with Gotabaya who lifted him up from oblivion and stood up for him after he helped to install him as the Army Commander.

Gotabaya not only covered his back all the way to Nanthi Kadal but was with him to give him all what was needed, especially military hardware and foot soldiers, to forge ahead in the battlefield. On one occasion when Fonseka’s Army was halted by the Tigers in Muhammalai with heavy casualties amounting to a loss of nearly 200 soldiers, even Ministers were going behind Gotabaya’s back and informing the President that war is not the way out and Fonseka can’t do the job. They told the President to stop the war and negotiate.

A dejected President was having serious doubts about the progress of the war and Fonseka’s capabilities and strategies. He summoned and questioned his Defence Secretary and it was the assurances given by Gotabaya that kept the war going to the end. He told the Commander-in-chief that Muhammalai was only one battle and not the end of the war. He added that the morale was high and that the soldiers were capable of defeating the Tiger who were on the run.

Of course, all three were indispensable links in the chain of command that won the war. Without the two links above him – the President and Defence Secretary – Fonseka could not have gone anywhere, either in his career or war front. Together they were the miracle-makers. Fonseka alone would have been a disaster as seen in his performance as a presidential candidate. His reputation and stature has taken a severe beating and – make no mistake — this is only the beginning because the ripples of his vindictive politics to get Gotabaya, his comrade-in-arms who gave him everything, are not going to end in a hurry. This will haunt him for the rest of his life.

And the enemies of the nation, both at home and abroad, are having field day with the consequences of his self-centered, vindictive politics. The result is there for everyone to see: the ominous letter of Philip Alston, United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary execution, addressed to President Mahinda Rajapakse.

At least now, after reading Alston’s letter, Fonseka should realize the damage he has done to the image of the professional Army that braved all obstacles and marched all the way from Mavil Aru to Mullativu, led on the ground by brilliant field commanders like Maj-Gen. Shavendra Silva. Fonseka’s contribution to winning the war cannot be underestimated but his failure to consolidate the victories and honour his men and women will disgrace him forever. He is like the man who brings home a clean pale of milk and then drops a handful of cow dung into it.

Where’s the glory in that, eh?

Expert Inspector said...

However, as events unfold it is becoming increasingly clear that Fonseka and Wickremesinghe deserve each other. Both are clinging to each other and performing like “kahi gaani” (woman with the cough) and “hotu gaani” (woman with the snut). There isn’t much of a choice between the two.

Wickremesinghe hurriedly and desperately recruited Fonseka into his defeated army hoping to cash in on his reputation as a hero and a patriot. But Fonseka has lost both within a matter of days. He has lost the glamour of being a hero after he falsely accused his own men of committing crimes which they never did, according to him. And no patriot would join the enemies of the nation which Fonseka identified correctly and condemned unequivocally when he was serving as Army Commander under President Rajapakse.

Obviously, Fonseka cannot be trusted to honour his own words. The irrational way he denies today the promises and statements he made yesterday makes him look like a confused man who does not know his own mind. He has lost his road map and is at sixes and sevens. This raises a serious question and I ask it very reluctantly:: Has Fonseka overnight turned into Gon-seka?

Now I see the day light. I have been in total darkness. JVP Vijitha Thuma has given me my sight.

Vijitha speaks:

This Government is so cunning and vicious.

(1) This Government has first made SF to do a treacherous statement.

See, how corrupted this Government is. Just to win the election they can do such nasty things. Our impeccable pure leader, who is so pure, felt into their cunning tricks. Because of purity of his heart I know that he has not taken a bribe from the Government to make such comment. The Government might have offered him bribe but there is no evidence he has taken it other than the circumstantial evidence that he made that statement.

That's why it maddens me. Without giving any bribe or giving bribe without any trace to discover it they were able to get SF to shoot himself at his own rear end. For what kind of bribe would he have done it? Maybe he needed to money to fund his campaign. But that also cannot be.

(2) Then the Government has made the UN to send them a letter so that they can exploit this rear end shooting affair of SF to their advantage. The Government has definitely sold out SF to the UN and bought LTTE.

After January 26th New SF Government should conduct a full investigation of this treachery of making SF shooting his-own -rear-end.

My Comment:
How devious? I am with you Vijitha. I completely understand your frustrations. Be carful Vijitha. The Government might do some spell on you to make statements of self-shooting your-own -rear-end.

According to the military assessment, the Sri Lankan military loss in Eelam war IV was significant. Further more a brief overview of the LTTE's current deployment potential will make it clear their strategic objective for the future battle.

• The rate of LTTE military actions around in Jaffna went up.

• Attacks on East, Colombo, Hampanthoddai and Moneragala shows that the LTTE maintains sufficient elite cadres in east and south to continue with its military activities.

• In defending Vanni, it has mounted three counter attacks on Mugamalai, and has engaged in more interception attacks on Div 57, 58 and 59.
The LTTE keep away their most of the Special Force brigades from the defensive battle for the future counter attacks and also the external political environment is gradually changing against the Sri Lankan state.

The LTTE's ability to comprehensively wreck the heartland of the Sri Lankan state is now well recognised. Destroying the enemy's military assets and their will to fight is the defining aim of all wars.

The SLA invaded Vanni with the intention of drawing the LTTE forces into a decisive battle, but LTTE adopted a strategy of retreat-in-depth, pulling back rather than engaging in offensive battle with mass army, and destroying any supply lines that will be a breaking point for the future counter assault.

-At the beginning most of the tamils (almost all) were ready to vote for MR (that is the truth). But now they hate Rajapaksas and they will vote for SF. More Wimal talk, more MR lose tamils' votes.
Sinhalese do not change their minds immediately like tamils for a statement like this. So what he lose from sinhala votes is very less compare to he gain from tamils.

02. GOSL has more work now. More Vimal talk, more troubles for GR with IC.
Minister's have to work overtime to face these IC issues.

03. Revenge from GR.

Ultimately it's very good move by SF as far as election campaign is concerned.

And I believe he will plant some more time bombs to get Sinhala votes next couple of days.

LTTE supremo Vellupillai Prabhakaran and his leaders were surrounded by the Sri Lanka Army and the final battle was about to begin. The scene is familiar but the year is different. This was not Puthukudiarippu in May 2009 but Vadamarachchi in June 1987.

Unfortunately Indian intervention prevented Sri Lanka from completing that mission and a war which would have ended 22 years ago became a roaring inferno which claimed many lives.

History would have been different and perhaps even Rajiv Gandhi may be alive today if not for that misadventure.

General Cyril Ranatunga, of the Joint Operations command, describes in detail the frustrations of his troops in his autobiography to be released on July 1, 2009. The book, titled ``Adventurous Journey: From Peace to War, Insurgency to Terrorism is a first hand account of the experiences of a military giant of our land, who lived through some of the most turbulent years of our history.

Laced with anecdotes and details which have never been revealed before, General Ranatunga fills in some of the gaps of what were Sri Lanka’s darkest hours.

FINSEKA'S MATCH

I grew up learning that Gary Sobers was the most versatile all-rounder ever to play the noble game of cricket. Back then there was no internet, no `cricinfo` or other websites where stats could be accessed with a few clicks. There was comment in the sports pages and frequent reference to his exploits.

Gary Sobers scored 8032 runs in 93 Tests, at an average of 57.78 and a highest score of 365 not out (a world record that stood for several decades). He scored 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. He took 235 wickets at an average of 34.03 and an economy rate of 2.22.

Ask any schoolboy cricket fan today and he will quickly name half a dozen players who performed better than Sobers with the bat and another half a dozen who took more wickets, had a better strike rate etc. They would be hard pressed however to come up with a name associated with all aspects of the game. He had power and elegance when he wielded the bat. And it is said that he would have made the West Indies Test XI for his bowling alone. Seldom has such versatility found residence in a single individual Gary Sobers bowled two styles of spin left-arm orthodox and wrist spin, and was also an effective fast-medium opening bowler. He is described as a brilliant fielder in any position but was peerless when fielding close to the wicket.

It is not too difficult for someone to have some basic skills in a lot of things. Most schoolboys can bat, bowl, keep wickets, umpire and keep the score. A genius however must excel in many aspects to the point that he stands among the greatest in each discipline. Hard to beat Sobers for versatility.

Nandana said...

I was thinking of a few other all-rounders such as Imran Khan, Ian Botham, Kapil Dev, Jacques Kallis, Richard Hadlee, Chaminda Vaas and Sanath Jayasuriya. All of them were great all-rounders no doubt, but still no match for Sobers when the overall numbers are considered. Botham, for example, amassed 5200 runs in 102 Tests at an average of 33.54 and took 383 wickets at an average of 28.40. Kallis can make a `Sobersian` claim for he has scored 10,277 runs in 3 matches at an average of 54.66 and taken 258 wickets at an average of 31.08. Still, when it comes to versatility, Gary Sobers stands along.

Dilshan? Angelo Matthews? Yes, quite versatile. Dilshan can bat anywhere in the order, is a brilliant fielder in any position, can keep wickets, is an effective bowler and can be counted on to entertain in any form of the game. So too Matthews. They just don`t have the numbers.

Ah, but one man does. He has put Sir Gary to shame. Not only can he bat, bowl (fast, fast-medium, off-spin, leg-break and all the subtle variations in spin bowling including all the mystery balls), keep wickets and field in any position, he can umpire too. He is a top notch match referee, a qualified coach, a physiotherapist, astute selector, efficient administrator, meticulous scorer, fluent commentator and one of the most enthusiastic water-boys to boot. He is a one-man army, in fact.

Sarath Fonseka, if we were to believe the man, is a do-it-all-by-myself person. From 2005 December (when he was appointed Army Commander) and 2009 May (when Prabhakaran was killed), this man single-handedly fought the LTTE. He tracked down the LTTE`s floating warehouses all the way to the Australian territorial waters and destroyed them.

He got into a fighter plane and precision-targetted S.P. Thamilselvan. He also made sure that the ordinary citizens support the war effort by managing the economy, designing monetary policy and implementing all kinds of measures to keep inflation at manageable levels, ensuring there were adequate stocks of essential items, and by negotiating foreign investment and loans. Sensing that the troop morale might be compromised by the ill-willed uttering of people of Mangala Samaraweera, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ravi Karunanayake and others, he took them on publicly, countered them, ridiculed them and shut them up.

He was also the country`s greatest diplomat ever. When Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Channel 4 News, BBC and various other organizations and individuals pandering to the LTTE began bad-mouthing Sri Lanka and the war effort, Sarath Fonseka took them in every international forum and shut them up.

I have to stand back in awe at this man. I am mesmerized when he speaks for all I hear are three words: I, myself and me. Did we defeat the LTTE? No! It was all Sarath Fonseka`s work, please get that right. It was war by Sarath Fonseka, with Sarath Fonseka and for Sarath Fonseka. It was Sarath vs the rest of the world. If executing a war was a cricket match, this is who the operation to defeat terrorism took place:

Sarath Fonseka, bowling from the Sarath Fonseka Pavilion end, passes Umpire Sarath Fonseka to bowl to Sarath Fonseka. Sarath Fonseka takes it on the half-volley and drives it past a diving Sarath Fonseka fielding at Cover Point. Sarath Fonseke runs across from wide mid-off to stop inches before it reaches the boundary, collects and sends in a perfect return to Wicket Keeper Sarath Fonseka who whips the bails off. It is a close call and Leg Umpire Sarath Fonseka refers the matter to third umpire Sarath Fonseka who declares that Sarath Fonseka has just made his ground. This leads to words being exchanged between Wicket Keeper Sarath Fonseka and Sarath Fonseka the batsman. Fisticuffs ensure and play is held up and Match Referee Sarath Fonseka is called on to arbitrate.

Get the drift, right? Gary Sobers, the world`s most versatile cricketer? Nope. It`s Sarath Fonseka.

Only one thing remains. Knighthood. Sir Sarath Fonseka. Want to know who is going to knight him? Queen Sarath Fonseka of course

A five-man crew charged in Thailand with illegal arms possession insisted their plane was headed for Sri Lanka and not Iran when it was seized in the Thai capital with a cache of North Korean weapons, media reports from Thailand reported today.

Defense lawyer Somsak Saithong told reporters today that the five men — four from Kazakhstan and one from Belarus — as saying that their flight plan called for a refueling stop in Bangkok before flying on to Sri Lanka.

But according to a flight plan seen by arms trafficking researchers, the aircraft was chartered by Hong Kong-based Union Top Management Ltd., or UTM, to fly oil industry spare parts from Pyongyang to Tehran, Iran, with several other stops, including in Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

The plane's papers described its cargo as oil-drilling machinery for delivery to Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan authorities had earlier rejected reports that the plane was heading for Sri Lanka.

Very good analysis of events ( Sri Lanka ) - read this & circulate

What if

Posted on December 2nd, 2009

by Lucky(Sydney)

Due to the recent political upheaval in the land of Sri Lanka (SL),
several people have come out and claimed the victory of the war. So we frequently hear/read the statements like “I am responsible for the victory over the LTTE”.

So I thought of compiling a list of critical events related to Sri Lanka
which happened during the last 3 – 4 years and analysed to see what if we failed in any of these missions, what would have been the possible outcome scenario?

1 Mavil-Aru conflict 2006

This was the beginning of the war with LTTE and at that time General
Fonseka was in the hospital after the suicide attack.
Mavil Aru was a bloody confrontation. LTTE closed the sluice gates of the
Mavil Aru to block the supply of water to about 30,000 acres of ripe paddy
affecting about 60,000 farmers. Started as a humanitarian operation, the
Govt needed to restore the water supply from Mavil Aru to the innocent
farmers.

On August 8, 2006 when the LTTE announced it was restoring the water
supply, everyone expected the SL govt to call off the operation and come
to a settlement. If it was Ranil or Chandrika at the helm, it would have
been the end of the story. Even the LTTE expected the same from Mahinda,
but the Govt went ahead with the operation “Watershed” until it gained the
full control of the sluice gates controlling the water flow.

During the operation “Watershed” and immediately after, there was pressure
from the International agencies and diplomatic missions to stop the
operation and come to a ceasefire. Even the ex US president Bill Clinton
intervened at one stage. In this instance President and the Govt selected
the Military approach over the political solution to resolve the issue and
which was never expected by the LTTE. The most important aspect of this
operation was to re-establish the credibility of the security forces and
totally sideline the SLMM (Monitoring mission).

If the operation had failed – what would have been the outcome? LTTE would
have taken the total control of the whole eastern province including
Trincomalee. – Mahinda’s head would have been on the chopping block.

2 SL Budget 2007

You may remember the tense situation that prevailed just before the voting
for the SL Budget 2007. Mangala Samaraweera expected several MP’s to cross
over from the Government side to the opposition; even the JVP expected the
same. Wimal Weerawansa and his supporters saved the government on that
occasion. When the defectors knew that Govt will not lose, their whole
operation was deflated. Even the current JVP did not vote against the govt
and abstained from the vote. Poor Anura Bandarnayake did not have a clue
of the situation and got seated with the opposition.

If the Govt lost the budget on that day, would you like to imagine the
situation of the country now? Most probably Prabhakaran & LTTE would have
captured part of the country by now.

3 Destruction of large LTTE ships in 2007

In 2007, SL Navy destroyed the several large LTTE ships which were
carrying arms and ammunition, in the high seas. It dealt a severe blow to
the LTTE’s international arms shipment network and drastically reduced its
fire power. This was a major turning point of the war. This was the first
time our small Navy went out of our water and completed a major operation
successfully.

What would have happened if that operation failed? Who would get the
blame? .Of course President, Defense Secretary and Navy Commander would be
the prime targets for the blame & ridicule. The opposition along with LTTE
would have started a campaign and toppled the Government. Most probably,
Prabhakaran would be running his Eelam by now. General Fonseka was not in
the scene at the all.

chamindac said...

4 UN Security Council in 2009

Even though the physical war was going on within SL, there was another
battle that continued on outside SL. Most of the Western nations (US, UK,
France, Norway, Sweden, etc) were using all their diplomatic fronts to
stop the war and come to a political settlement. Several times LTTE
Diaspora with the help of the West tried to include SL conflict into the
Security Council agenda, but failed because of China, Russia & Vietnam.
Here again credit lies with the Rajapaksa regime for backing the correct
horse. Right from the beginning, Mahinda and the Govt had a very good
relationship with China, Russia & India and that paved the way for their
support.

If the LTTE Diaspora & West won at the UN Security Council, most probably
UN would have sent a Peace Keeping Force and that would have been the
birth of Eelam.

5 Bloody war in 2008 & 2009

By 2007, SL Security Forces have taken the total control of the Eastern
province and started to dismantle LTTE from the north. According to the
media reports, General Fonseka was in total control of this operation and
he appointed commanders like Major General Jagath Dias and Brigadier
Shavendra Silva, etc to lead the army from several fronts.

As we all know, they succeeded in their operations in spite of the stiff
resistance from LTTE. Even though LTTE was weak at this time because of
lack of supplies, credit should go to General Fonseka for appointing the
right people at the right time and for the operational tactics. But recent
report says that General was not in the country when the war was won. Most
probably he was not needed during that phase of the war. Our Security
forces without the General, Diplomats, Administrators and Politicians
completed the job in style with the public support.

During this phase LTTE had the indirect support of the NGO & INGO as well
as the SL opposition (UNP, Mangala Samaraweera, Mano Ganeshan, etc).
Finally SLSF won the war.
What if – the SLSF forces lost this war, what would be the situation now?
Whose head would go to the chopping block first? Of course, as Commander
and Chief, Mahinda’s head would go first followed by Gotabhaya, General
Fonseka, etc and not the other way around. This is where the
“Responsibility & Accountability comes into the picture”.

6 War at the UN Human rights in 2009

While the physical war was happening in north of SL, two other wars were
going on in UN Human rights council and in Colombo.

When the west failed in UN Security Council, they tried again in UN human
rights council where there are no veto powers to anyone.

Fortunately, SL had people like Dayan Jayatilake, Rajiva Wijesinghe and
Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe to stand up in this council and counteract
their arguments and brought new resolutions to safeguard the independence
and the human rights of Sri Lanka. This victory is as equal as the
military victory in the north of Sri Lanka.

If SL lost this battle at the UN Human Rights Council, UN would have sent
a Peace Keeping Force to SL and that would have been the end of war and
thus created the birth of Eelam. Mahinda Rajapaksa, Mahinda Samarasinghe,
etc would be blamed for the failure.

7 Battle in Colombo. In 2009

As far as I am concerned, this is the most satisfying victory of the whole
war. During the near end of the war, the West and LTTE Diaspora tried
their last trump card by sending British Foreign Minister and French
Foreign Minister to SL, to give a life line to the LTTE and to rescue
Prabakaran and LTTE leaders. Swedish Foreign Minister was not given the
visa to join British and French. It was a very tensed situation.

This was the first time in history (after Keppetipola ) that a SL
politician stood up to our previous colonial masters and asked them
“Please do not interfere with our internal affairs”. It was the first time
foreign ministers of two powerful countries came together to Sri Lanka and
left empty handed.

What if – SL govt gave in at that moment? Prabhakaran and the LTTE would
have survived and the fight would have continued for few more generations.
Ranil, Mangala & Chandrika would have taken the upper hand in local
politics and SL would go back to colonial days. Mahinda and the current
govt would have lost the power.

8 Capture of KP & War Crimes

If one thinks that the war with LTTE is over, they are sadly mistaken.
LTTE Diaspora with plenty of money and resources will keep on
obstructing/harassing Sri Lanka in every possible sphere. Fortunately we
have capable people like Defense Secretary Gotabhaya who understood what
was happening outside the Sri Lankan borders, initiated and coordinated
the action to arrest the current leader of LTTE KP and brought him to SL
which took everybody by surprise. From the LTTE war perspective, this is a
remarkable achievement. Only the Israelis used this type of operation
before. Please note that SL does not have resources like Israel.

The West and LTTE Diaspora know the abilities of our defense establishment
and that is why they are all out to stop this type of operations and try
to accuse Defense Secretary and the other commanders (except the General
who was in China during the final phase of the war) on war crimes.
I have a feeling that if General wins the election with the help of West,
Ranil, Chandrika, etc, he will have to obey his masters and he might
handover our key defense personnel to trial at the International Court of
Justice on “war crimes”. You may also remember what happened to the
personnel who used to work for the Millennium City project.

If that happens, it will be a very very sad day for Sri Lanka, we may not
only lose whatever we have gained during the last four years, but also SL
will go back at least 60 years – back to Colonial era.

9 Conclusions

From the above, one could easily see who was taking the biggest risk in
conducting the above war and due credit should go to the correct deserving
persons and not to anyone who is just claiming it.

Recently, I read another report saying that President and Defense
Secretary prevented General Fonseka in speaking to the press. No wonder
anyone allowing General to speak with the following experiences.

At the height of the war, when the Govt and expatriates were trying their
best to gather support from everyone, the Army Commander makes utterances
such as “Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese”. This statement alone gave a lot
of ammunition to the LTTE and to its Diaspora. The expatriates who loved
the country had a very difficult time in encountering the above statement
and defending the General. I am sure it must have been the same for the SL
government.

Dear General – a politically correct statement is “Sri Lanka belongs to
Sri Lankans (Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslims, etc)” and not the other way.

When we needed the support of India, the General makes another blunder by
uttering “Tamil Nadu politicians are jokers”. These are politically
incorrect statements. I am sure some one in the government would have
apologized to India with regards to the above statement.

10 Now , Who is the winner

chamindac said...

What if – Major General Jagath Dias (57 Division) and Brigadier Shavendra
Silva (58 Division) – the most competent commanders of the army, claim
that they are responsible for the victory of the war because they went to
the battle front and took the risks more than anyone else?

Then the General Fonseka will say – No, I gave the opportunity and command
to the commanders and therefore I am totally responsible for the victory.
Then Gotabhaya might say – No, I took the risk and appointed the General
as the Army Commander and therefore he too should get the credit of the
victory.

Then President Mahinda might say – No, I appointed Gotabhaya as the Defense Secretary and therefore I should get the credit for the victory. Then the people in SL (SLFP, JVP, JHU, etc) will say we appointed Mahinda as the President and the credit and the victory should come to us. Finally credit of the victory belongs to all Sri Lankans except the ones like Ranil, Mangala, Chandrika and their supporters who tried to betray the country at each and every opportunity.

This LEN thing is hilarious. The reader comments are even more hilarious. let me take it back, they are truly despicable. One day, Fonseka worships the other scum LW's photo and cozy up with Sunday Leader. The next day he falsely accuse GR and SS for war crimes. Then the next day Fonseka says that such communications between GR and SS are not state secrets. Then they want Sunday Leader to retract. Now they allege that Sunday Leader is on government payroll. Of course, Fonseka's tema already accused UN to be in the government's payroll. So, the accusation that Sunday Leader is in the government payroll is not surprising at all. I can predict that the Fonseka camp will come up with the story that Basil the "root of all evil" owns 95% of Sunday Leader. Day by day, Fonseka is becoming a Scumseka and a Funnyseka.

Patriots,

I spoke to one of my brother's-in-law .. a lifetime UNP-er .. about the upcoming elections. He plans to vote for the MR-GOSL in the PE and the GE, and believes that MR will win in a MASSIVE LANDSLIDE.

This is an important indication, in my view, because he is very well connected politically on both sides of the fence, and to ordinary Sri Lankans.

It also tells us this: there are many UNP Patriots who are going to vote for MR.

That reminds me of another UNP stalwart who supported the MR-GOSL during the war .. Rukman Senanayake .. who broke with the UNP with a group of UNP MPs to support the nation in its hour of need.

I am particularly happy about that, because Rukman was a classmate and a friend of mine for nearly 10 years, when I was a schoolboy in Sri Lanka.

All Hail the Patriots .. where ever they are!

People loyal to the country are with the government, Sri Lanka President says

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said all the people who are loyal to the country are now supporting the government to achieve its goals for the country's development.

Addressing the business community of Kandy District at the President's House on Tuesday evening, the President said the Sri Lanka withered the global economic crisis successfully due to the great support rendered by the public to the government during the crisis period.

The President commended the assistance Sri Lanka received from friendly countries like India, Pakistan, Iran and China when the Western countries imposed restrictions and conditions on economic aid.

President Rajapaksa said it is the local business community who can steer the country towards economic development.

The government is always committed to support the local businesses by providing tax concessions and necessary technological knowledge to improve their businesses.

President also met the members of professional associations in Kandy yesterday. Sarath Ekanayaka, Chief Minister of Central Province was also present at the meeting.

Cat is out of the bag:

The real truth about human right concerns, professed demand to protect civivilinas and cry about War crimes of Robert Blake and other international friends of LTTE/Ranil/Mangala and many others is exposed here.

About two months before the final battle on the banks of the Nanthikadal lagoon in May, the United States had offered to evacuate top LTTE leaders and their families.

The unprecedented proposal had been made by the then US Ambassador in Colombo Robert Blake after the Co-Chairs to the Sri Lankan peace process, spearheaded by the Norwegians agreed that the LTTE could no longer halt the army advance.

Although a section of the press in March 2009 speculated that the US was exploring the possibility of evacuating civilians trapped in the war zone, it can now be revealed that the actual move was to evacuate the LTTE leadership. Well informed sources told The Island that the US plan envisaged taking over 100 persons, including Velupillai Prabhakaran, Sea Tiger leader Soosai, Intelligence Wing leader Pottu Amman and their families.

Sources said that Ambassador Blake went to extent of calling US experts to Colombo to work out modalities regarding the deployment of US assets to evacuate the LTTE leadership discussed the possibility of deploying US vessels to carry out the evacuation.

Sources said that an aircraft from Hawaii carrying US experts touched down at the Bandaranaike International Airport following a dispute over formalities regarding landing rights. Sources said that the US embassy had alerted the government of the impending arrival of the aircraft only after it was airborne.

While secret negotiations were taking place, the Army had advanced slowly but steadily into the remaining LTTE-held territory in the Mullaitivu district. By the second week of March, a multi-pronged ground offensive was eating into some 45 square km territory under LTTE control. At the beginning of the Sri Lankan offensive in September 2006, the LTTE had about 15,000 square km under its control.

Sources said that government forces could have finished off the Tigers earlier had the army carried out an all out attack regardless of civilian losses. In fact, UN Chief Ban-ki-moon had inquired why the government did not carry out an amphibious assault on the Mullaitivu beach to conclude the offensive as he flew over the Vanni battlefields.

Sources said that much talked about UN bid to save about 50 LTTE leaders and their families was made hot on heels of the failed US attempt. Sources said that had international operations to evacuate the LTTE leadership succeeded, Sri Lanka would have faced an extremely difficult situation and the so-called Eelam government in exile would not be a joke had they escaped.

The US and the UN had intervened on behalf of the influential Tamil Diaspora which continued to play a pivotal role even in the post-LTTE era. Sources said that those pushing US and western capitals were not only Sri Lankan Tamils but influential groups from South Africa and South East Asian countries.

After Sri Lanka had successfully thwarted international intervention, the LTTE on its own tried to use one of its vessels to evacuate Prabhakaran and his family, the sources revealed.

Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe last Monday (Dec 21) said that a 90-metre ship seized by a special SLN team was believed to have been involved in a last ditch attempt to rescue Prabhakaran. He said that a light chopper launched from the ship could have picked Prabhakaran as the army advanced on the last LTTE stronghold.

Fearing an LTTE operation, the navy deployed the bulk of its assets on the north-eastern waters while the SLAF stationed a pair of jets at the China Bay air base to meet any eventuality.

Once the 55 and 59 Divisions linked-up on the Mullaitivu beach, it was only a matter of time before the Tigers collapsed on the Vanni front.

Yes Ninja it is not RB's personal agenda. This role of protecting LTTE has been given to RB himself as it seems.

To give a conflicting and confusig view there is another group who may be seen like acting with good will towards Sri Lankan people.

However, the real agenda is explained in Economic hit man.

To that extend, I agree with Marxists(not JVP but classical Marsists).

Then so are the works of Russia, china and India and many countries.

For their economic and political benefit they destroy so many other people's lives in poor countries.

My only hope is if and when Sri Lanka becomes a powerful country it will protect and promote its interests without walking on peoples in other countries. For Sri Lanka it shoud be the Motto: Our people first but we do not deleberately trod on the necks of other people in other countries.

The LTTE was the instrument of USA and many other countries that was used crush Sri Lanka.

thuistha,

although i don't agree with it, you seem to be right on pissa-nai-gon (some WERE trying to discredit the govt by DEMANDING govt punish him harshly).

now the govt is planning to bail him out. many were puzzeled when govt took a strong stand against pissa-nai-gon.

GR fell into SF's traps many times.

1. GR warned some anti-SF journalists to keep quiet bcos he didn't want SF to attack them.

2. got govt to silence pissa-nai-gon who was PARTICULARLY critical of SF.

3. keeping IDPs under TOO HARSH conditions that were not necessary. apparently GR had asked SF what's the rationale for such very harsh restrictions and SF had said that there is a GRAVE danger match by these restrictions.

4. GR was fooled with 2007 VSV medals until he opposed SF's views and awarded it to the deserving.

5. prasanna silva and parakrama pannipitiya 2 other examples.

looks like SF had LONG DRAWN plans and GR, hell bent on destroying tigers (he ONLY had this in his mind), didn't have a hint!!!

but he got it later.

IDPs seeking a better life in the "Concentration Camps"

.......
Over 50 percent Sri Lanka IDPs who were free to leave have returned to the camps

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 23, Colombo: Over 50 percent of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were given the freedom of movement to leave the camps in Northern Sri Lanka have returned, the Minister of Human Rights and Disaster Management said today.

According to the Minister by December 23, only 87,241 IDPs remain in Vavuniya after the freedom of movement granted on December 01.

The Minister said 21,332 had taken the opportunity to leave the camps and over 50 percent have returned proving that the situation in the camps is relatively amiable. The allegations that IDPs were detained and human rights violated have been proved baseless, he added.

Giving figures on the government's resettlement efforts, the Minister said 1,002 IDPs were resettled in Kilinochchi yesterday.

Another 13,016 IDPs have already been resettled in Kilinochchi 59,830 in Jaffna, 2,514 in Batticaloa 6,700 in Trincomalee, 10,069 in Mannar, 23,979 in Vavuniya, 591 in Ampara, 10,640 in Mullaitivu, 12 in Kandy and one in Polonnaruwa.

The camps are being closed gradually with the total exceeding 50% and school premises used for camps have been released to the Education Department. Meanwhile camps in Sumathipuram, and Mawaindu have been closed, and the Pulmoddai camp will be closed in a few days, the Minister revealed.

The Government should make it the case to the voters, as now and even then, the current JVP worked against the Nation for selfish reasons; they wanted to bring down the Government at the budget at a crucial time to save LTTE for their own survival.

The needed LTTE for their political survival; so they could lip service defeating LTTE but in fact they were doing everything possible to save the LTTE. One prominent example is budget operation. They wanted MR to act in high gear. Luckily MR chooses soft and hard gear combination in the skill levels of a political Houdini. So that is one more reason why we should support MR, his political skills that mainly focussed on welfare of the Nation. That is why people like Rukman supports the Government. This is good indication.

Again they are betraying the Nation. This time they have openly embraced UNP/Mangala/ Mano etc.

What for? Only for their selfish survival.

It is not the Nation what they are concerned about just their political stomach.

They are now dreaming on a military dictatorship junta headed by SF and JVP.

JVP will earn its place; political graveyard, I hope.

Ex-JVP veterans return to support Gen. Fonseka

By Kelum Bandara

A group of JVP veterans including Lionel Bopage and Kelly Senanayake who defected from the party from time to time have now teamed up to support Opposition Common Candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka at the upcoming presidential election.

These ex-JVPers have formed an organization called the ‘People’s Forum’ to campaign for Gen. Fonseka.

Mr. Senanayake told the Daily Mirror yesterday these JVP veterans did not join any political party after their defection from the party in the past but had now united to unseat President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the upcoming election.

“That can be done only by supporting the candidature of Gen. Fonseka. We have taken this decision in the interests of the country. After we broke ranks with the JVP, we remained politically neutral. However, we have worked for certain non-partisan social movements,” he said.

He said Mr. Bopage who now lives in Australia will campaign for Gen. Fonseka while remaining there.

Mr. Senanayake was the 26th accused of the 1971 JVP insurrection while the 25th accused was Minister Mahinda Wijesekara. After serving a jail term till December 1976, he was instrumental in revamping the party with party stalwarts like Upatissa Gamanayake, Rohana Wijeweera and present leader Somawansa Amarasinghe.

Weapons-carrying cargo plane headed for Sri Lanka

By DENIS D. GRAY
December 23, 2009

Seized N.Korean weapons were bound for Iran: report AFP – Graphic showing the known movements of a cargo plane that flew from Pyongyang in North Korea to Bangkok

BANGKOK – A plane seized in Bangkok with a cache of North Korean weapons wasn't headed to Iran, a senior Thai police official said Wednesday, contradicting a report from arms trafficking experts.

Separately, the five-man crew insisted their final destination was Sri Lanka and not Iran, their lawyer said after visiting the jailed men.

Defense attorney Somsak Saithong told The Associated Press the crew also denied any knowledge of accused international weapons trafficker Victor Bout, who is in the same prison battling extradition to the United States on terrorism charges.

There has been much speculation since the plane was impounded Dec. 12 about where it was headed and whether it was linked to Bout.

"They told me they don't know Victor Bout," Somsak said. He quoted the five men — four from Kazakhstan and one from Belarus — as saying their flight plan called for a refueling stop in Bangkok before flying on to Sri Lanka. They have been charged with illegal arms possession.

Police Col. Supisarn Bhaddinarinath said investigators have so far found no evidence that the aircraft was bound for Iran, or any link between Bout and the arms seizure.

But according to a flight plan seen by arms trafficking researchers, the aircraft was chartered by Hong Kong-based Union Top Management Ltd. to fly oil industry spare parts from Pyongyang to Tehran, Iran, with several other stops, including Bangkok, Colombo in Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

Union Top was set up by a company called R & G Management Consultancy, according to a woman who answered the door at Union Top's registered office. She said she didn't know a man called Dario Cabreros Garmendia, who signed Union Top's incorporation in Hong Kong on Nov. 2, and did not know how to reach anyone at the company.

After answering several questions she asked The Associated Press reporter to leave the office.

Garmendia listed Barcelona, Spain, as his address on another document related to the set up of the company.

Thai authorities, acting on a U.S. tip, impounded the Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane after uncovering 35 tons of weapons, reportedly including explosives, rocket-propelled grenades and components for surface-to-air missiles.

"They always deny any involvement with the weapons or any charges they are accused of. They told me that their job was just to fly the cargo plane to its destination. They don't know about or had anything to do with the cargo itself," said Somsak.

The U.N. imposed sanctions in June banning North Korea from exporting any arms after the communist regime conducted a nuclear test and test-fired missiles. Impoverished North Korea is believed to earn hundreds of millions of dollars every year by selling missiles, missile parts and other weapons to countries such as Iran, Syria and Myanmar.

Weapons-carrying cargo plane headed for Sri Lanka

....continued....

Daniel Pinkston, a Seoul-based North Korea watcher for the International Crisis Group think tank, said while the incident remains murky, it was clear that U.N. sanctions have not stopped North Korea from trying to engage in arms sales.

"It's a major source of foreign exchange and earnings for the Korean People's Army," Pinkston said. "I don't think anyone believed they were going to desist or just say, 'OK, well, you guys wrote up a tough resolution so we're gonna get out of this business now.'"

But he said cases such as the Bangkok seizure will likely have an impact on those willing to purchase North Korean weapons.

"It's very clear that if you are a buyer you run a risk of losing your cargo or getting intercepted," he said.

The Thai government has been investigating the arms cache and says it will send the results to the United Nations.

Somsak said the five men complained that they had been forced by police investigators into signing documents written in Thai. They asked to be provided with a translator.

The report on the flight plan from the nonprofit groups TransArms in the United States and IPIS of Belgium was funded by the Belgian government and Amnesty International. It could not be independently verified.

The report says the plane was registered to Air West, a cargo transport company in the former Soviet republic of Georgia. Asked to comment on whether the plane was bound for Tehran, company owner Levan Kakabadze told The Associated Press he was unaware of the plane's final destination.

Speaking by telephone from Batumi, Georgia, Kakabadze said he leased the plane to the SP Trading company and could bear no responsibility for what happened next.

Researchers say the plane's previous registration documents link it to Air Cess and Centrafrican Airlines, which are allegedly connected to Bout, who has been in prison in Thailand since he was arrested March 6, 2008.

But the report, which was released Monday, said there was not enough evidence to link the plan definitively to Bout.

Associated Press writers Deborah Seward in Paris, Aoife White in Brussels, Aida Sultanova in Baku, Azerbaijan, Misha Dzhindzhikhashvili in Tbilisi, Georgia, Kelly Olsen in Seoul, and Min Lee in Hong Kong contributed to this report.

China's last tiger is eaten

December 23, 2009

The last wild Indochinese tiger in China has been killed and eaten by a villager.

The man was sentenced to 12 years in jail, local media reported. Kang Wannian, a villager from Mengla, Yunnan Province, met the tiger in February while gathering freshwater clams in a nature reserve near China's border with Laos. He claimed to have killed it in self-defence.

The only known wild Indochinese tiger in China, photographed in 2007 at the same reserve, has not been seen since Kang's meal, the Yunnan-based newspaper Life News reported earlier this month.

The paper quoted the provincial Forestry Bureau as saying there was no evidence the tiger was the last one in China.

A local court sentenced Kang to 10 years for killing a rare animal plus two years for illegal possession of firearms, the local web portal Yunnan.cn reported. Prosecutors said Kang did not need a gun to gather clams.

Four villagers who helped Kang dismember the tiger and ate its meat were also sentenced from three to four years for "covering up and concealing criminal gains", the report said.

The Indochinese tiger is on the brink of extinction, with fewer than 1,000 left in the forests of Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar.

This decision has profound implications to us as a Nation.

We need to balance all our ifs and buts.

If we are not hardcore this or that, according to the available facts, the
Decision is largely and strongly leaning towards MR.

One of them will be our next President. We need to make sure that the best available one will be the president.

Since I do not know MR personally I cannot guarantee his sincerity yet according the available information his record is so impressive even though there are blemishes.

If I met him (with out security) I would give a knock on his head; still I will vote for him with pleasure. This is the first time that I would have voted in an election to any of the candidates if I were in Sri Lanka.

Those blemishes, to judge them, should not be taken out of the context of a nealry impossible situation. When we do that we do so just because we are deep down either UNP, JVP, LTTE hardcore sympathisers.

Even last time I would not voted for any of the candidates in the PE. I would have considered to be a shame if I had voted anybody. This time I would vote MR with pleasure and pride.

Stil I would give him a tokkak.

-----------------------------------
Are you sure about this? I mean SF comes with UNP. UNP would not be interested in China as they are pro western. Therefore GOI can easily discard the fact that SF would become pro China, unless of course he decided to become a dictator.

I would believe MR would be much more pro China, Vietnam e.t.c than SF, which are totally against India Interests. Also I am sure MR would be a much shrewd operator than SF and would take advantage by playing the China card much more than SF can ever do.

Thusitha said...

Also,

I think India wanted us to play the China card as well. India really wanted us to destroy LTTE and the only excuse that they can give the Indians and TN politicians, the west for doing so was that SL might go towards China unless India stay neutral. Therefore in the past it was in the in the best interest of India for us to play the China against India.
But now the war is over, I wonder how India would react MRs friendliness with China. I believe being a leftist MR would be much more friendly towards China than SF.

Its obvious that MR is so powerful leader than Fony even with UNP backing. Countries like India, China and US probably like a weak leader like Fony to be SL president expecting to be their puppet. However, the problem is these major players have conflicting interests. So if Fony becomes US puppet its no good for either India or China and wise-verse. I believe you all had an opinion that TN supported Tiger's during the war.The ground reality wasnt that.SL Tamil issue is not a electoral topic.Leader's can talk whatever they want, but votes arent going to be cast based on that. That is the ground reality.By reading the web,you could well form a opinion that TN is for separate Eelam. The ground reality is far from it.Lets take this case study.Vaiko who is the staunch supported of Tiger's couldnt win in TN.EVKS Elangovan from Congress, who was a staunch critic of Tiger's too lost. Both of them lost not because of their stance on SL Tamil's issue, but due to prevailing ground situation. In both their cases,a third party played spoiler by pooling more than a lac votes. They lost due to that.

Likewise, from what I read and understood, its SF vs MR.But who all are the 3rd parties? What way they will influence the outcome - for a outsider like me,I will know only when the results are out.

Thushita,
India is not unduly worried about the west.We know for sure,US or the West is not even going to move a twig here without taking India into confidence. When the war was on,they made all the noises and never acted because they knew what India wanted. Our concern is with our neighbours in the East and the West. When it comes to that India thinks MR is a best bet. When I first read the IA on alert topic,I felt history has come a full circle.IA also rushed in during the Colombo siege in 70/71.

In my humble opinion,Srilanka will prosper well if it doesnt get into India \ PRC tangle. When it takes sides, the other side will make sure SL pays for that.Pitting one against each other for its own interest, will be good only until it lasts.

Okay people,it was nice talking to you all after a long time.Back in my hometown after long period for X-mas.Going to catch up with some shopping.

Wishing everyone Merry X-mas(for whoever celebrates it)and a wonderful 2010.

I understand SL tamil issue is not the only topic in TN and probably not even a major issue. But on the axis of SL, tamils, LTTE, TN and India its the common topic. Obviously, I don't have knowledge on TN ground politics. OTOH, the news we read from TN is related to our conflict. We don't care about rest which may be prominent in TN itself. I was not saying all TN politicians are pro-LTTE but majority is just doing politics and SL tamil issue is another tool only-IMO.

Now a similar case is here in SL; if you just read web reports its quite different to ground situation. If you read news on web often I suggest you visit www.slelections.gov.lk/ and check earlier election results. I give you two examples; In (various) media based propaganda JVP alone represent 50% space but they usually get 5%. On web JHU/SU showed (in 2002-04) about 25% support but they got 5-%.

We Sri Lankans are one Nation that consists of many religions and languages. There are no special homelands for Buddhists, Sinhalese or Tamils or Muslims.

As I did in the past, I disagree now with your contention that assessment of the "ground situation" always requires one to live in the area. And I disagreed with you every time you stated it.

However, if you want to absent yourself from discussing Sri Lanka politics to comply with your own stand, please do so!

How Lanka averted US move to evacuate LTTE leadership
by Shamindra Ferdinando

Responding to The Island queries, sources said that at one point the Sri Lankan government had suggested that Ambassador Blake should also consult New Delhi regarding the controversial evacuation plans.

Once the 55 and 59 Divisions linked-up on the Mullaitivu beach, it was only a matter of time before the Tigers collapsed on the Vanni front.

indian,

yes it was ONLY a relief operation.

1. india didn't force us to stop the war in june 1987.

2. after the relief drop, india didn't continue it.

3. india came to SL for military purposes in LATE JULY.

4. opearion poomalai was a GOOD THING IMHO. otherwise many tamils would have starved to death totally unnecessarily.

5. india HAD TO DO IT bcos,

5.1. JR govt showed NO CONCERN about jaffna ppl suffering without food.

5.2 JR had made it clear 4 years b4 that he would even starve jaffna tamils to death!!!!

in this context india HAD to do something and it did it.

"I am not worried about the opinion of the Jaffna people... now we cannot think of them, not about their lives or their opinion...Really if I starve the Tamils out, the Sinhala people will be happy."
[J.R.Jayawardene, President of Sri Lanka, Daily Telegraph, July 1983]

that's not all. JRJ's govt FAILED to get india's constructive participation. in contrast the MR govt did it VERY WELL.

so well that india secretly gave us T55 tanks, RPGs, radars, FREE OF CHARGE despite SEVERE protests in tamil madu where more than 10 ass clowns committed suicide and tamil madu jokers threatened to resign.

Moshe don't you think JRJ's this arrogant and callous attitude gave furhter fertilising ground to the LTTE and alienated Tamils from Sri Lankan Nation.

I cannot see why JRJ behaved so criminally. He removed coast guards making it possible for the LTTE to grow. Why did he do that?

Then his nephew?

JRJ was curse and then his nephew is continuing his legacy.

JRJ could have stopped LTTE by giving orders to arrest VP. Three times he procastinated and let the opportunity slipped. Why?

Why? Did JRJ have something against Sri Lanka?

Moshe Dyan said...

JRJ was INTOXICATED with power.

he made several statements after getting drunk with power.

anything that questioned his UNRESTRICTED POWER was seen as a threat.

JRJ had something BIG against SL and its ppl.

burning jaffna library, july 1983, getting rod of tamil politicians AND not holding the due election (so that they can AT LEAST elect some other politicians), etc. gave tamil ppl only one option.

and in JRJ's final statement as president in 1988 he had said that he wishes sinhala and tamil ppl will live like mercury and gold (these 2 elements stick so hard that it is not possible to seperate them)!!!

Swarnajith Udana said...

Moshe, it is true that Tamil racism existed long time before JRJ. This was fuelled by white rulers.

While JRJ was doing everything possible to fuel Tamil racism sentiments he also fuelled Tamil militarism by not arresting VP and romoving coast protection.

Assuming that JRJ was an intelligent person, I am inclined to think that JRJ did all of these according to some design. What I cannot speculate on this is that whether he later realised that he has fed an insatiable and uncontrllable monster. On top of that his Govoernment people repeatedly abused Indian leaders.

I do not appologise for Indian leaders for destroying Sri Lanka in the account of this JRJ's foolishness.

India had economic concerns as well as personal revenge in their mind. Still they were also responsible for many thousand Sri Lankan deaths and rapes. How could they justify killing our innocent people just to safeguard their economic interests and get revenge for personal abuse?

Moshe I was very pleased to see that you were in sympathy with Tamil plight. Before any thing we are humans. Only after we should consider as ourselves Sinhalease or Tamil, Hindus or Buddhists.

My only hope Moshe is to see a peaceful, prosperous and just Sri Lanka in which every corner is homeland for all the communities.

As you sugggest I hope that MR will follow a prudent non-hurtful plan of ethnic integration. I am hopeful. MR being a master tactician he can achieve this.

Moshe Dyan said...

su,

WTF???

tamils have suffered MORE than all the others. they suffered in the hands of,

1. GOSL
2. SLDF
3. IPKF
4. LTTE
5. ITAK
6. ACTC
7. TNA
8. TULF
9. EPDP
10. TMVP

the ONLY sustainable way to save them from this BS is MULTI ETHNIC COLONIZATION of the north.

until that happens, northern tamils will not be allowed to live like colombo tamils by some of these elements.

TNA knows this and that's why agreed with SF with the condition to remina the sole representative in the north.

but BR is vehemantly against colonization. that will spell disaster for SL until MR/GR over rules him.

Yes there are countries in the horn which are safe havens for arms smugglers operating from very secured and affluent countries, perhaps after the bidding is done they are re transported to these needy nations.Of cause the needy nations are rouge nations and the dealers operate from the so called financial centers in Mideast, but not for long.Such arms were brought to us from places like Eritrea and method of payments could be drugs as well.

Moving people around to build up new villages towns and cities with Sinhalease, Tamil and Islamic people need to happen for development and ethnic harmony.

I think they will do it in a soft manner. This is still sensitive time. We need to silence the International community by properly looking after Tamil people. Eventually they will give up using Tamil racism to kee Sri Lanka at the bay.

Since Sri Lanka is one Nation there is no reason why this needs to be considered as inappropritate.

Having said that it is necessary to pay attention to the sensitiivities of all the communities. For instance when you build a new town we need to take into consideration of their kovils.

We all people have gone through a lot. We do not need to go through something like this again. If a Government starts an ethnic redistribution program with open mind as a part of develpment without choosing to establish Sinhalease hegamony but Sri Lankan hegomony, seeing the benefits Tamil will come to party but we need to win their trust that when we say Sri Lankan Nation we do not mean just Sinhalease.

When he was the minister of state in the short lived Dudley's government people likes Bradman weerakoon acted in favour of the people who were now separatists in the north.Exposing this resulted in my American friend being deported out of the country where the majority of the assistant immigration officers were Tamils. Not even the US embassy showed any sympathy for my friend who was locked up in the Slave island Police station awaiting deportation, though he gave employment to over 1000 people and JR was a friend of us and yet he ignored our pleas.People were coming in droves from India every evening and the likes of VP were just smugglers operating from VVT and they were in more sympathy with the Maoist dogma than separatist politics and they showed much hostility to the top elite of the Jaffna people and the good natured Tamil immigration offices just caved in to them.from then on we had little hope for people in the north and for us in the south, rot set in our island from there on.Only people who had a real heart for us were individuals like senator Justin Kothalawala(Ceylon Insurance),Upali Wijewardana(Liver brothers and Philip Gunawardana MP of the then UNP govt. who bid us fare well out of the country in early sixties.

There may be 5% attracted to Fonzy-anura-mongal hate program but majority don't.

/2. verbally threatening to take legal measures against SF but not doing anything./

GSL is not responsible in their statements.. too many ministers, spokesmen contradict each other. GSL said taking legal action against C4 but nothing happened.

Taking any action (reducing security, filing a case, taking official residence back, etc) against Fonzy may give adverse affect for MR; Majority supporing MR still believe Fonzy is some sort of great personality, a hero even though they can't explain what he is doing now. 2. no. ppl don't believe the govt when it says things against SF.

they shouldprove it to them legally.

corruption, treason, murder are not tolerated by ppl. violating some unknown compex laws, yes ppl would tolerate.

IF the govt is waiting closer to 26 jan to do this it is a mistake. at first sympathy builds. then rejection takes over. that is why ample time should be left to the election date.

/Children exploited in Lanka’s civil war- Archbishop of Canterbury

The head of the Anglican Church, the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, has singled out Sri Lanka and Congo in his Christmas day message saying that one of the most appalling phenomena, still affecting hundreds of thousands of children, is the exploiting of children in the "meaningless and savage" civil wars in places like Congo and Sri Lanka.

A statement posted on the website of the Archbishop of Canterbury said that the suffering of the children is an insult to the purpose of God and a contemptuous refusal of the gift of God by those who keep them in their different kinds of slavery.

"...perhaps one of the most appalling phenomena, still affecting hundreds of thousands of children, is the exploiting of children in the meaningless and savage civil wars in places like Congo and Sri Lanka - children who are abducted, brutalised, turned into killers, used as sex slaves. To hear of these experiences is almost unbearable, yet the scandal continues," the website quoted the Archbishop of Canterbury as saying is his message./

nandana,

the BIGGEST lead for MR came from GAMPAHA.

matara, galle, hambantota came next.

surely there will be competition but this will be set off by the results in n'eliya, batti, kandy.

the lead RW got from these 3 districts was EXACTLY same as the lead MR got from the southern province.

[Ananda USA this is Rukman's present view.]

Rukman is a UNP leader; I expect him to criticize the MR government during an election campaign.

I am DISAPPOINTED in his support of SF .. as indicated by that news report (BTW, where was it published?). I was not aware he was now strongly supporting SF.

However, when the country was fighting for its survival and Ranil was confusing Alimankada and Pamankada ... he supported the MR-GOSL and the war effort .. for which I am very grateful.

As I have said OFTEN, my ALLEGIANCE is to Sri Lanka, to ensuring the its survival and the welfare of all of its people, and not to any political party or to any group of people, especially when they stray away from those objectives.

I think most Patriots at this Blog feel that way.

LTTE bought five ships during Eelam War IV

Admiral says SLN hunted down floating arsenals although its fleet was vulnerable

by Shamindra Ferdinando
Islank.lk
December 25, 2009

An LTTE vessel recently seized and brought to Colombo by the Sri Lanka Navy had been among five ships acquired by the group during the Eelam War IV though they could not be used at least once to smuggle in weapons.

Unlike the eight LTTE-operated vessels hunted down on the high seas from September, 2006 to October, 2007, the fleet of five ships bought legitimately had been registered with Lloyds.

Government sources told The Island that most of the vessels, if not all were of Japanese origin and were bought through front companies. Sources said that the vessels, including the one brought to Colombo were constantly under surveillance during the war with the help of foreign intelligence services. A six-man SLN team comprised four officers and two men had stealthy infiltrated a harbour situated at a remote island in South East Asia about a month ago to take control of the 90-metre ship, sources said.

The LTTE had abandoned the vessel in April/May after failing in their bid to mount a rescue operation.

Former Navy Commander Admiral (Rtd) Wasantha Karannagoda yesterday told The Island that the LTTE threw some 6,000 rounds of mortars overboard from one of the ships at the last stages of the war. Once they knew that they could not breach the SLN blockade on the last LTTE stronghold at Mullaitivu, the enemy had no option but to discard their arsenal. He said that by early this year, the Sea Tigers lost their wherewithal to challenge the SLN not only on the high seas but coastal waters as well.

Government sources said that of the remaining four ships, one had been in the custody of Canada since October. Sources pointed out that unlike the vessel seized by the SLN, the ship now in Canadian custody had arrived at an Indian port after the end of the war in May. Sources said that the ship had left an Indian port last September before being intercepted in Canadian waters. Sources expressed confidence that Canada and India would cooperate on this issue in a bid to identify LTTE terrorists among the 76 persons, who tried to reach Canada illegally in the detained LTTE ship.

Sources said that they were in the process of tracking down LTTE assets, including remaining ships as part of an intelligence operation conducted under the purview of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Karannagoda told State-run Rupavahini, early this week that he obtained President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s approval to launch operations on the high seas as his old fleet of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) could have been vulnerable. He revealed that they had to be ready for any eventuality as inclement weather could have caused trouble for the ageing fleet. "But the President gave us the approval," he said adding that only the President and the Defence Secretary knew exactly what was going on. He said that the bottom line is that their operations targeting eight LTTE ships could have gone wrong and SLN ships lost on the high seas in bad weather. The SLN hit LTTE ships in four separate operations far away from land.

Did Christ come to India to study Buddhism?

Madhusree Chatterjee
December 25, 2009

NEW DELHI: The spotlight is back on Jesus Christ and his India connection as the world celebrates Christmas Friday. Some historians believe he spent 17 years of early life - from the age of 13 to 30 - in India learning Buddhism and the Vedas.

"There are references that Christ's family (parents) settled in Nazareth, but the next time he appeared in Nazareth, Jesus was 30. He was said to have been growing in wisdom and stature in the missing years," British film producer Kent Walwin told IANS.

Here to receive the Dayawati Modi Award for arts, culture and education in 2009, Walwin's latest project, "Young Jesus: The Missing Years", will explore early years of the messiah, which are not described in the Gospels.

According to Walwin, his movie is "on the Apostolic Gospels, which says Jesus was last seen in West Asia when he was 13-14 years old".

The first part of the movie will be based on Gospels and the second part of the movie will be "pure conjecture based on archival material", the filmmaker said.

There are several references to the India connection.

In 1894, a Russian doctor, Nicolas Notovitch, published a book called the "The Unknown Life of Christ" based on his extensive journeys in Afghanistan, India and Tibet.

During one of his journeys, he visited Leh, the capital of Ladakh and spent some time at the Buddhist monastery of Hemis when he broke his leg.

At the monastery, he was shown two large yellowed volumes of a document in Tibetan language, "The Life of Saint Issa". Jesus was referred to as Issa - or the son of god - by the Vedic scholars who tutored him in the sacred texts.

Notovitch noted down 200 verses from the document at the back of his journal which he kept during his travels. The document later created a storm in the West.

Monks at the monastery of Hemis, located 40 km outside Leh atop a hill, corroborate to the legend of Christ in India.

"Jesus is said to have visited our land and Kashmir to study Buddhism. He was inspired by the laws and wisdom of Buddha," a senior lama of the Hemis monastery told IANS. The head of the Drukpa Buddhist sect, Gwalyang Drukpa, who heads the Hemis monastery, also believes in the legend.

Swami Abhedananda, a Bengali spiritual scholar and seer, had journeyed to the Himalayas to investigate the "legend of Christ visiting India". His travelogue, a book titled "Kashmir O Tibetti", tells of a visit to the Hemis monastery in Ladakh. It includes a Bengali translation of 224 verses of the "Issa legend" which Notovitch copied.

In 1952, another Russian, Nicholas Roerich, a philosopher and a scientist, visited Hemis and recorded the legend. According to Roerich, "Jesus passed his time in several ancient cities of India such as Benares or Varanasi".

"Everyone loved him because Issa dwelt in peace with the Vaishyas and Shudras whom he instructed and helped," Roerich said in his account.

Did Christ come to India to study Buddhism?

.....continued......

Christ's teachings in the ancient holy cities of Jagannath (Puri), Benares (in Uttar Pradesh) and Rajagriha (in Bihar) earned him the wrath of the Brahmins, forcing him to flee to the Himalayas after six years, historians and authors say. Christ, say archival documents, spent another six years studying Buddhism in the Himalayas.

German scholar Holger Kersten's book, "Jesus Lived in India", also tells the story of the early years of Jesus Christ in India.

"The lad arrives in a region of the Sindh (along the river Indus) in the company of merchants. He settled among the Aryans with the intention of perfecting himself and learning from the laws of the great Buddha. He travelled extensively through the land of the five rivers (Punjab), stayed briefly with the Jains before proceeding to Jagannath," Kersten says in his book.

An English version of an Urdu treatise written by the founder of the Islamic Ahmaddiya movement, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908), also tells of a "second visit by Christ to the subcontinent" after his "reported escape from the Cross".

Christ visited Afghanistan, "where he met the Jews" who had settled there to escape the tyranny of the Jewish emperor Nebuchadnezzar and then came to the Kashmir Valley, where he lived for many years.

Ananda,

with due respect i COMPLETELY disagree that jesus came to india, etc. and/or studied buddhism or hinduism.

1. there is no mentioning in his public life about ANYTHING that he learnt from hinduism or buddhism.

2. he continued to follow the jewish beliefs of jehovah, etc. the only difference being he refined those beliefs.

3. IF jesus was in india, etc. the first thing he would have brought with him is MEDITATION - various indian forms. it never happened.

4. according to the bible, jesus went to 'church' for the first time when he was 12. bible also says he became a carpenter following his father. that would have taken a long time. thereafter he developed an indepth knowledge of the bible, politics in the church. according to the bible jesus was not a brilliant intellect. he was very average. this would have taken a very long time. so there was really no time for him to do any of the adventures in india.

this is also in line with other prophets. they all took a very long time to gain their abilities.

5. in his stories, he mentioned about far away lands. ppl loved these stories. he never mentioned anything about india or the surrounds. had he ANY knowledge, he would have surely used it.

6. jews DID come to afghanistan. but there was no interaction between them and those who stayed back in israel. they became the 'LOST TRIBES'.

nebuchad nazzar was ruling iraq in the 6 century BC. large scale kamboja migration from afghaniostan/persia also happened during this time. they came to SL too.

(it will be very interesting to investigate the possibility of jews coming to SL with them.)

Moshe,

I have absolutely no position on whether Jesus did, or did not, come to India and learn Buddhism or Hindu beliefs. I had read such claims before, but I just don't know enough about it.

I posted it because it was interesting to me, and possibly to others, as well.

Guys
I have been making a lot of calls to my friends in SL last night, mostly folks from the rural areas like Tanamanvila and Tissa,Simbalanduwa etc.I must say that there’s overwhelming support to MR and rightfully so, as he gave the correct political leadership to get rid of the most ruthless band of terrorists from the island.
It’s sad that SF had taken this path where politics are definitely dirty from which ever party one belongs to. He should have served the country in a much honourable way, perhaps forming his own defence academy or being a consultant to the world governments that are blighted with two bit terrorists.
With respect to Christ coming to India, there may be some truth as very little is known about much of his life from the age of 12 years to late twentys.Perhaps he went East with the caravans to places like India, China and southern states of Russia. He may have been much inspired by the past religions of the east.
Wish everyone a happy Christmas.

As we all aware, Sunday Leader, a rag run by religous fundamentalist like Lasantha and Fredrica had/have the utmost desire to drag SL to a war crime tribunal. Their intentions are nothing but grossly anti Sri Lankan. LeN is premptively accusing SL for an interview with Shavendra Silva in tomorrow's edition. Why in the world Shavendra did not stay from SL? It is safe for the patriots to stay away from it.
