Me' Jayagrahika Dawase' "Ayu Bo Wewa Maha Rajaneni"!

To the ALWAYS FAITHFUL Patriots,

A Heartfelt Tribute in Gratitude!

Semper Fidelis, Patriots of Lanka

By Ananda-USA

Our Motherland, resplendent Sri Lanka,
Hallowed be thy name!
Thy children flock today to vote,
To preserve thy immortal flame!

The Lion Flag flutters proudly aloft,
To remind us this freedom's day!
Our duty to keep thee, safe and strong,
As our forefathers did yesterday!

A Mahinda Rajapaksa by deed and word,
Strode forth boldly to eternal fame!
To lead his people to a safer world,
When all others retreated in shame!

In Praise of Patriotism

This victory was achieved, because President Mahinda Rajapaksa spoke to the Patriotism inherent in Sri Lankan hearts and minds.

That overcame the traditional "Split the Sinhala Vote" strategies of Anti-National Forces, and upset all of their careful calculations.

The Mahinda Rajapaksa government raised hope, pride and confidence in the ordinary people of Sri Lanka, that they can again become masters of their own fate; that nothing is beyond their capabilities to grasp and achieve.

The MR government demonstrated in the few years they held power, that we sons of the soil of Sri Lanka can TAKE COMMAND of our own problems and SOLVE THEM better than the foreigners who condescend to preach to us solutions that fit their self-serving agendas.

It is that sense of CONFIDENCE IN OUR OWN ABILITIES to achieve, that he infused in the hearts and minds of the people of Sri Lanka, through winning the Eelam war decisively, protecting Sri Lanka with the assistance of new global allies, undertaking a massive programme of infrastructure development not seen in Sri Lanka since the days of Prakramabahu the Great, and painting a vision of future progress and prosperity, that made the difference.

That vision, spelled out in the Mahinda Chintana, will be realized in the years ahead only if we hold together to preserve this able and tested leadership at the helm of this country, that won this massive election victory today.

It is because we Patriots collectively recognized the CRITICAL IMPORTANCE of EMBEDDING and SUSTAINING Patriotism in the hearts and minds of EVERY SINGLE Sri Lankan, that we undertook to create websites such as SriLankaPatriots, SriLankaDefenceForum, NobelPeacePrizeForSriLanka, and LankaWeb, among great many others.

There are those who make fun, for overt and covert reasons, of our collective Patriotism as mere chest-beating. Just ignore them, for Patriotism in the defense of truth, justice, honor and duty to your people is supremely ennobling, and it pays rich dividends in the protection of your country as you see today.

Stable governance of Sri Lanka by National Deshapremi Forces will remain essential to preserving the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka, and fostering its economic progress in the future, as Sri Lanka's enemies continue to undermine it with renewed zeal.

As we see in this Presidential Election, EMBEDDING and SUSTAINING Patriotism in the Hearts and Minds of ordinary Sri Lankans is the KEY to attaining that goal of a stable and efficient Deshapremi National Government.

Helping to maintain that Patriotism will be our continuing challenge as Patriots, where ever we are, in whatever way we can.

Let us March Onward then .. to a LANDSLIDE VICTORY in the General Election in April, 2010!

Jayawewa!

List of excuses from losers

1. State media were biased
2. MR abused state resources (CTB buses)
3. MR violated election laws by displaying posters and cutouts
4. MR camp sling mud
5. Northern people didn't vote
6. EC was in house arrest and Basil came to office and change results in computer
7. EC didn't have good look in face when announcing final results
8. No live telecast of final results

And surprisingly they have found nothing wrong with them and their stupid candidate..

BTW, EC is in service due to court rule from then chiefclown and he is now in service 8 years after his retirement age. Hope MR find a solution possibly after GE for EC post.

Next is GE. We may overlook UNP list as they will be in opposition anyway. However, as general public we need to keep an eye on UPFA list. Both UNP and SLFP usually call for applications and interview candidates for GE but finally its leaders decision. Media and public need to exert some pressure on MR to come up with a clean list of capable candidates. As voters will be left with a list and have to select 3 we need a good list.

For example MR can kick out Mervin or give him nomination and let people decide give him preferential or not.

What if RW ran instead of SF?

During last election, RW technically won if not for 180 Million bribe paid to LTTE (we now know bribing Terrorists is a good thing).

SF lost almost by 20%.

UNP's trump card did not work. SF carried lot of baggage to the table than I thought.

Imagine if SF did nothing, he would have been regarded as a hero.

Election process pulled his pants down and he has no where to hide his naked butt. He is no longer a hero.

Now that MR has been elected, he has no choice but to deliver progress cutting down corruption.

Let's start by prosecuting wrong doings by SF (if he is guilty) and then go towards Merwin.

Is Sri Lanka a good tourist destination?

If you haven't traveled around the world or taken a vacation, please don't respond.

What Sri Lanka needs is South American or Maldives style tourist resorts.

These resorts should be built isolated from population centers and insulated from locals. They should be based on the water (sea) with lot of activities where tourists will never have to leave the resort.

Local beggars, drug pushers, drunken locals, prostitutes, child molesters should be kicked out of them.

We are not a culture used to take vacations and therefore will not be able to build effective tourist hotels.

Just like we outsourced our cricket management to Australia, building tourism should be outsourced to other nations.

Shree said...

What nearly 60% victory by MR should give us:

1) Minority PM (at least 30% of the time).

2) Smaller cabinet.

3) Lack of corruption and crime.
(heard how drug dealers and thugs have been eliminated).

4) Education system - BIC in SE Asia.

5) Cleaner and well organized country without build up at every corner.

People of Sri Lanka have tarnished our natural beauty. Without cleaning up our mess, we can't expect to generate lot of tourist $$.

Sam,

You said it like it is; This is exactly what happened.

The ordinary common people of Sri Lanka were the MOST AFFECTED by the war. They were the people who sent their sons and daughters to fight the war and win it, and they have to live and raise their children in Lanka .. they are not going anywhere! Therefore, THEY are the MOST PATRIOTIC of us, and THEY won this Massive Election Victory.

The role of the ELITE in Sri Lanka SHOULD BE to use their skills, knowledge and wealth to espouse the CAUSE and PROTECT the INTERESTS of this BULK OF THE PEOPLE of Sri Lanka. In doing so, instead of massaging their own anti-national agendas, they will EARN the LOVE and RESPECT of the people and assure their own place in Sri Lanka. The relationship should be a SYMBIOTIC one, not at odds with each other.

I am happy to say, there are Many Such Patriotic Leaders in Sri Lanka, MR and GR among them, who from time to time rise to power to SAVE THE NATION and PROTECT THE PEOPLE.

Never! This is kalu-suddha talk!

Instead, our own people should be sent for training to other countries, or Sri Lankan expatriates abroad should be recruited to return to Sri Lanka, to handle these jobs.

Our purpose is to build our country and deliver the benefits of that development TO OUR OWN PEOPLE. It is not to export the bulk of the profits to foreigners, and to gradually transfer ownership of Sri Lanka to them.

Sovereignty is a MEANINGLESS CONCEPT if you do not own your own country, and are reduced to being LANDLESS RENTERS!

Do you know that many of the large Las Vegas hotels are run by Sri Lankan expatriates? Do you know that the managers of a number of luxury yachts around the world are Sri Lankan?

I have met and talked to some of them. If these people are good enough to do those jobs EFFICIENTLY, why can't similar people run our own hotels .. and raise their children and help their fellow citizens of Sri Lanka with the proceeds?

The Natural party for SF is TNA but he is aiming for UNP or JVP. I do not think apart from Ranil and his closest associates any other would prefer to give shelter to SF. To accommodate SF in UNP, Ranil will have to fight a world war 3. Also stil it is possible that by this time Ranil cannot stand the sight of SF but Ranil cannot show it.

Even in the case that SF is sheltered in UNP it will be just a bit of noise and final dessimation of UNP since SF cannot work with people unless people offre total subjugation to him.

JVP has lost more than UNP in this election. They were proven to be lying, scheming and hallucinating more than UNP. At least, UNP accepted the verdict of the People.

Sheltering SF in JVP/Mangala camp will generate some noise but that is it. The best thing about it that JVP will be completely loose its credibility its leaders will have time in hell wihtout going to hell since the Devil is with them.

International Monitors say Sri Lanka election is free and fair

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 28, Colombo: The Asian international monitors who were in Sri Lanka to oversee the just concluded presidential elections on Tuesday say the election was conducted in a free and fair manner.

At a special media briefing held in Colombo this morning, Dr. Pan Wei Ta, head of the Taiwan-based Asian Association of Election Authorities (AAEA) said that they did not witness any significant deviation from the procedure as mentioned in the election laws by the returning officers.

The AAEA team comprising 41 delegates from several countries arrived in the country on invitation by the Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake. The team visited various polling stations in all 22 electoral districts.

The head of the AAEA delegation said there have been no reports of general public breaching election laws. The election officials carried out their responsibilities neutrally in the most appropriate manner without showing any favoritism, the monitors said.

Dr. Pan Wei Ta said the Election Commissioner as well as the government has extended them the fullest cooperation in their duties.

They are to hand over the final official report to the Election Commissioner this afternoon. The final report would include recommendations for future elections in Sri Lanka, the head of the delegation said.

The delegation comprised officials from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and Taiwan.

Jan 29, Colombo: The United States has reached out to the presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka and will remain in contact with him to clarify what his future intentions are and to be helpful if that is appropriate, a U.S. official revealed today.

In response to queries on General Fonseka's safety, U.S. State Department spokesman Secretary of State, Philip Crowley at the daily press briefing on Thursday said the U.S. has Embassy in Colombo had contacted him in response to the concerns expressed by the General.

"We are watching carefully and we have been in touch with General Fonseka regarding the security around him," Crowley said.

Army deserters arrested in Sri Lanka over plot to assassinate President

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 28, Colombo: A group of army deserters have been arrested over an alleged plot to assassinate President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Director General of Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) Lakshman Hulugalla revealed today.

The arrested deserters are being interrogated now to find out whether there is any involvement of the opposition candidate former military chief General Sarath Fonseka.

If there is adequate evidence to prove that General Fonseka too was involved, he too would be taken in to the custody, the Director of MCNS said.

Defence authorities deployed troops to guard the hotel General Fonseka checked into after the election along with his family and aides on the suspicion that several army deserters were also with the General.

Several deserters who were with the General later surrendered to the authorities.

Meanwhile, Hulugalla revealed that defence authorities have arrested 30 army deserters responsible for illegal propaganda activities including the 20 that have been taken into custody in the Gokarella area on election day.

All of these INDEPENDENT ELECTION MONITORING REPORTS should put to rest SF's allegations of abuse!

...........
Commonwealth Expert Team says Sri Lanka elections well administered

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 28, Colombo: The international election monitoring groups, the Commonwealth Expert Team said the just concluded presidential elections in Sri Lanka is generally well-administered on election day but there were shortcomings in the pre-election period due to incidences of inter-party violence.

Issuing a preliminary report the five-member Commonwealth team which was in the country since January 18 to observe the election process said the overall administrative arrangements for voting and counting have been well conducted.

"The Commissioner for Elections and his staff across the country expended great effort to put in place procedures to ensure Sri Lankans were able to cast their ballots and the ballots were properly counted," their statement said.

"There have been some reports of violent-incidents, notably in Northern Province, and malpractice in isolated areas, and we hope that all such instances are properly investigated. But based on our team reports and reports from other observers it appears that overall voting and counting have proceeded reasonably well in most areas," the monitors concluded.

While praising the proper administration of the elections, the group expressed concern over the pre-election violations and violence that marred the election campaign.

"However, there is a compromised pre-election environment, including the election management body unable to fully ensure respect for the rule of law; a failure of some state institutions to respect legal provisions and guidelines; infractions of some campaign regulations; and, incidences of violence. Until such problems are addressed the electoral process in Sri Lanka will not fully meet key benchmarks for democratic elections," the Commonwealth team said in their preliminary report.

The team is to compile its final detailed report which will include a series of recommendations for the administration to follow to strengthen the electoral process and the environment for the elections.

Noting that the same recommendations have been made during previous elections by many international and national observer groups, the team urged the government to abide by the 17th Amendment to the Constitution and actually implement the changes suggested by the monitors.

The five-member team of experts headed by the former Jamaican Foreign Minister Mr. K D Knight was constituted by the Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma at the invitation of the Sri Lanka Elections Commissioner.

The other members of the team include Ms. Cynthia Barrow-Giles, a lecturer in Political Science at the University of the West Indies, Barbados, St Lucia, Mr. Subba Rao Ilapavuluri, Chief Electoral Officer of Andhra Pradesh, India, Ms. Jane Michuki, a lawyer from Kenya, and Mr. Tim Neale, a Media Expert from the UK.

[I sincerely hope there is no truth to the allegation of SF's involvement in this.]

Not quite.

I for one sincerely hope this IS true (re. evidence). All my firsthand info. says yes, there was a plan afoot to assassinate key GOSL figures and seize power by force.

{incidentally this info is coming from many trusted sources including even from disheartened, disgusted UNPers who blame RW for putting SF to contest; they are appalled at the results that saw the vote base that RW had in 2005 vanishing into thin air this time – due to crude, ugly talk/mistakes (like the Opposition not doing proper research to find out the HiCorp affair) from SF as per their view}

As such, I sincerely hope the evidence here will be solid and that GOSL will arrest, incarcerate, prosecute and Jail (or Execute) this whoredog for what he was (is) – A TRAITOR!

As for the rest, forget the bullshit to turn the other cheek as somebody once said, take necessary steps to punish the Traitors once and for all, one must strike while the iron is hot, as with time people forget whom the enemy and who is the friend. Think of the time what JR did to Mrs.Bandaranayaka no sooner he assumed Presidency. I appeal not to stand on high moral grounds and forgive these Traitors, they are there to cause enough obstacles for you to succeed in implementing the Mahinda Chinthanaya, and it’s time to see the OBNOXIOUS WEEDS do not grow!!! No, MR should not hide. He won the mandate from the overwhelming majority of Sri Lankans to govern and he must do it freely and with dignity.

However, agree with your threat level...

This is why it is imperative to "show a few lessons" that will act as the strongest deterrence to these Gonseka supporting Army deserter types.

All it takes is a few "calling cards" to be placed for this vile lot to find/see and then the rest will get the message and just abandon their vile schemes.

My Comment at Economist.com on

Victory for the Tiger-slayer: What the president’s re-election means for his sorely divided country

This article is typical of the biased Western media that does not recognize the inalienable right of a struggling Asian democracy to carve its own path towards national survival and economic vibrancy. If Sri Lanka rejects the self-serving advice of Westerners who wage war with a vengeance to protect their own interests, to secure its own place in the sun, they demean it with it derogatory names.

Many Tamils of Sri Lanka have supported a fundamentally racist aparthied dream of a "homeland" in Sri Lanka for Tamils-only, ethnically cleansing the North and East of Sri Lanka of their Sinhala and Muslim communities. The Tamil Diaspora that the LTTE expelled so artfully to foreign countries, hold their hosts bondage to their separatist cause, while exploiting, violating and subverting the laws of their blissfully ignorant hosts. They conveniently forget that it is their own actions threatening the unity of Sri Lanka that brought disaster cascading down upon all Sri Lankan heads. They did not, and still do not, accept the notion that Sri Lanka is the birthright of ALL of its people, not PART BY PART, but as a WHOLE. The only Tamil-only homeland in the world is in Tamil Nadu, India .. not in Sri Lanka .. which will NEVER allow it. After 30-years of pain, suffering and humiliation the Sinhala people, seething in anger, have finally stood and said "Enough!" .. we will tolerate no longer "Dividing the Sinhala Vote" as a strategic means of destroying our country from within.

Guided by the teachings of the Buddha, we pledge to create ONE Nation of ONE People with ONE shared Destiny in Sri Lanka, with EQUAL RIGHTS for every citizen, and an EQUAL RESPONSIBILITY borne by each to LOVE, DEFEND and PROTECT this Resplendent Isle. We will not devolve power to any regions on communal bases: ethnic, religious, linguistic, or caste-based .. to PERMANENTLY EMBED communal divisions in our midst, and give rise to further civil discord in the future. Whether the West likes it or not, Sri Lanka will remain and thrive as a vibrant and compassionate democracy in the future, guided by our own policies and ethics, come what may. This land shall become The Fortress Lanka of Old, to remain Resplendent for All Eternity.

Reacting to speculation that Gen. Fonseka attempted to assassinate Rajapaksa, says Sri Lanka

PTI
January 28, 2010

Sri Lankan government on Thursday hit back at defeated Opposition candidate Gen Sarath Fonseka, alleging he had attempted to "assassinate" President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family.

A day after Fonseka charged the Army with attempting to kill him and was seeking India's protection, the Defence Ministry on Thursday claimed there was "ample evidence" to prove that the former Army Chief Fonseka hatched the conspiracy from two hotels in Colombo.

Director of Media Centre for National Security Lakshman Hullugale claimed that the President and his family were to be assassinated along Galle Road in Colombo or at the Lake House Junction in the commerce hub of Fort.

He claimed nine army deserters, who were arrested from outside a hotel in the capital yesterday, were part of the plot and investigations into this are now underway.

In his letter to the Election Commission on Wednesday, Fonseka accused Rajapaksa of using the state media to attack him and of misappropriating public funds for his campaign and of preventing displaced minority Tamils from voting.

"The enthusiasm of the people we noticed during the campaign is not reflected in this result," Fonseka told reporters here. "We will never accept this result. We will petition (the court) against it."

My 2nd Comment at Economist.com on

Victory for the Tiger-slayer: What the president’s re-election means for his sorely divided country

The Tamil's problem is that they are basically racist, and egged-on by support from 80-million Tamils in Tamil Nadu, they want to create a Pan-Tamil Empire. First in Sri Lanka, then in Tamil Nadu, then wherever they can dispossess a people of their ancestral land.

In the meantime, they adopt the strategy of pretending to be wailing victims all over the world, while they practiced murder and mayhem in Sri Lanka. They can wail elsewhere, but murder and mayhem in Sri Lanka will not be possible AGAIN.

They will have no problem living and prospering in Sri Lanka, if they give up that attitude of superiority and entitlement, and join hands with the Sinhala and Muslim people of Sri Lanka to become Sri Lankan Patriots.

The majority of Tamils in Sri Lanka live among the Sinhala people, not in the North and the East. They cannot have the North & East cake cake and eat it elsewhere as well.

They MUST abandon their attempt to arrogate to themselves special rights in Sri Lanka. That means, that Sinhala and Muslim people must also have the same right as Tamils to live anywhere in Sri Lanka as they wish, without let or hinderance. Furthermore, the State must have the right to develop the resources throughout Sri Lanka for the benefit of ALL of its citizens.

The Tamils of Sri Lanka, who were largely well integrated into Sri Lankan society before India under Indira Gandhi stirred the pot under Soviet influence to prevent Sri Lanka drifting towards a free-market capitalist system in the Western orbit, must now choose to integrate into Sri Lankan society as equal citizens, or wail forever about non-existent discrimination as a means of extracting special rights.

That will NEVER WORK in Sri Lanka, whatever backing they may get by conning the West.

'Polls, crowds and excuses' - Island Editorial

TheIsland
January 29, 2010

Inability to cope with losses is common to humans. Opposition presidential candidate Gen. (retd) Sarath Fonseka has found it difficult to come to terms with the ignominious defeat he suffered at Tuesday's election. It is only natural that he is reeling and smarting because he had high hopes. Never did he anticipate that his political blitzkrieg would collapse in this manner.

Fonseka thinks he should have been the President because of the large number of people present at his election meetings! But, as is common knowledge, crowds at political events are rather deceptive. After all, it is the JVP that accused the government of transporting people all the way from Hambantota to President Mahinda Rajapaksa's meetings all over the country. Two doctored photographs of President Rajapaksa purportedly addressing an election rally in Badulla--with dialogues and think bubbles--posted by Rathu Sahodarayas on the Internet, come to mind. In the first one, President Rajapaksa asks a cheering crowd, "What shall I give you, the people of Badulla?" An enthusiastic supporter in the front row shouts, "We need boats and fishing gear!" In the second picture, an irate President says to himself, "This fool from Hambantota is mucking it up!" Thoughts of another man in the crowd appear in a bubble: meka apita muhudakuth dennada yanne? (Is he going to give us a sea as well?)

Organising massive crowds is the JVP's forte. If it holds a rally in Colombo all its members scattered throughout the country flock there. Theirs is a low cost operation; they travel by bus and survive on buns and tea. The JVP must have brought people to Fonseka's meeting from near and far. On the other hand, thanks to wide publicity Fonseka used to get from the State media while being in the good books of the government and his fame as the former commander of a victorious army, he may have attracted crowds wherever he went. UNPers also attended his rallies in their numbers. Therefore, Fonseka may have been able to address well attended meetings.

If crowds meant votes, the JVP would win each and every election in this country. In 1982, JVP leader Rohana Wijeweera, who contested the presidential elections, had the biggest and most attractive rallies. He got carried away by his own gimmicks and acted as if he had thought he would win. The results exposed his real strength. He polled only 273,000 votes. It is said that he made a beeline for a friend's place after the results were announced, locked himself up and sobbed his heart out because he had expected at least one million votes!

Fonseka, who was involved in counter terror operations in the South in the late 1980s, should have known better than to fall for JVP tricks. The JVP is quite adept at creating illusions in the public mind. Its killer squads consisting a few members each roaming the country during its second uprising would surround a house at night and run around it several times making a great deal of noise before ordering that the door be opened so that the occupants, fearing that there were many intruders, would not resist. The moral of the story: One should not go by noises the JVP makes.

Ananda-USA said...

'Polls, crowds and excuses' - Island Editorial

............

Fonseka's failure at Tuesday's election was due to a host of factors. His 'broiler Swan' could not find its way into the rural areas where nearly 75 per cent of voters live. He conducted a single issue campaign aimed at ousting President Rajapaksa and could not sustain it. It peaked prematurely and ran out of steam.

While promising a change, Fonseka found himself surrounded by political liabilities. UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe publicly admitted that they could not win against President Rajapaksa, but they undertook to help Fonseka achieve that feat! Thus, failures became the pillars of Fonseka's campaign.

Fonseka rushed to Horagoalla at the eleventh hour to receive former President Chandrika Kumaratunga's blessings while claiming that he would ensure good governance and battle corruption. Chandrika wanted her supporters to vote for him. But, Fonseka lost to President Rajapaksa in her bastion, Attanagalla by over 30,000 votes. (Rajapaksa obtained 61,000 (66.5 per cent) and Fonseka polled 30,110 (32.5 per cent). Interestingly, even Chandrika polled only 61 per cent of votes in Attanagalla at the Presidential Election in 1999.

Fonseka blundered by closing ranks with the pro-LTTE TNA. This unholy alliance had a devastating impact on his popularity in the South, President Rajapaksa's stronghold. That was political hara-kiri for a man who was trying his damnedest to secure the support of those who celebrated Prabhakaran's death a few months ago. He cooked his goose.

Fonseka's temper tantrums ruined his image. His frequent ranting and raving made people wonder whether a person with such a volatile temper was fit to be the Head of State.

His attempt to settle personal scores with the Defence Secretary by claiming that the latter had ordered the army to kill surrendering LTTE leaders and his threat to court-martial the ground commanders who had annihilated the LTTE's military muscles, for their alleged engagement in politics in the event of his victory, cost him public sympathy.

Thus, Fonseka's defeat in a contest against a popular president frantically campaigning for a second term prematurely came as no surprise. He has no one to blame for the disaster but himself; he took a blind plunge into politics at the behest of a group of failed politicians.

It may be recalled that Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake wisely said before Tuesday's election that the losing party should desist from trotting out foolish excuses, as his department had taken all precautions to ensure a free and fair election and explained them to all the candidates in the fray. The Opposition's claim that election results are unacceptable is an indictment on the much respected Polls Chief

S.Lanka shares at record after president's re-election

By Shihar Aneez
January 28, 2010

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan shares hit a fresh all-time high after dipping 1.9 percent in the early trade on Thursday on stability hopes after the presidential poll, in which Mahinda Rajapaksa was re-elected in a landslide victory.

The All-Share Price Index of the Colombo Stock Exchange jumped 1.57 percent to hit a fresh record high of 3647.80 points, surpassing its previous all-time high of 3610.74, hit on Tuesday. It closed 1.25 percent up at 3636.41 points.

The market opened with negative sentiment and fell 1.94 percent as some investors who had expected a regime change after the election sold their stakes in thin trade, dealers said.

However, retail investors chipped into the bourse and started buying shares across the board on hopes of political stability and unchanged economic policies after Rajapaksa's re-election.

Sub-sector indices of hotels and travels, banking, finance, and insurance, manufacturing, and trading hit new peaks during the trading as investors were bullish on returns in the bourse across the board.

"Investors are positive as they think that there won't be any policy changes and Rajapaksa will continue his economic policies," said Harsha Fernando, CEO at SC Securities.

Rajapaksa won Sri Lanka's first post-war national election on Wednesday.

Some analysts said local retail investors are pushing up the market too much with foreigners selling their stakes.

Foreign investors, who were net sellers of shares worth 785.3 million rupees last year, have sold a net 2.9 billion worth shares so far this year.

Sri Lanka's annual inflation hit a 11-month high in January due to a low base effect, with rising consumer spending on the back of low interest rates and high food prices, the data showed on Thursday.

Analysts said accelerating inflation is not a concern for investors at the moment as it is under control and below the policy interest rate level.

Shares in conglomerate John Keells Holdings, which on Monday posted a 49 percent rise in its December quarter earnings, closed 1.29 percent firmer at 176.50 rupees.

Conglomerate Aitken Spence gained 3.4 percent to hit a record high of 1,386.25 rupees a share, while Asian Hotel Properties rose 9 percent to hit a more than one-year high of 121 rupees on booming post-war tourism industry.

Lanka Cement, which said it had commenced a project to manufacture cement by year-end focusing on former war zones in north and east, jumped 29 percent to 29.75 rupees a share.

The day's turnover was 1.93 billion rupees ($16.8 million), more than thrice the 2009 daily average of 593.6 million rupees.

The bourse has risen 7.4 percent so far this year after being one of the world's best-performing markets in 2009, jumping 125.2 percent on post-war optimism.

The Sri Lankan rupee closed weaker at 114.60/70 per dollar, compared to Tuesday's close of 114.50/55 due to demand for dollars for import bills, dealers said.

Both share and money markets were closed for a special election holiday on Wednesday. They will also be closed for a Buddhist religious holiday on Friday.

Dealers also said a state bank, through which the central bank directs the market raised the dollar trading range to 114.45/65 from 114.35/65 due to stronger dollar.

The interbank lending rate or call money rate edged up to 9.139 percent from Tuesday's 9.082 percent.

This is of extreme importance. See this news and some of my earlier finds as stated below. They resonate to some extent.

[[In a joint operation launch by Ministry of Defence of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan Intelligence Units, a hard-core LTTEer “Subramaniam Siva Kumar” alias “Rajan” was arrested according to Army Media spokesperson Brig: Udaya Nanayakkara.

The suspect “Subramaniam Siva Kumar” – a former LTTE terrorist was in the most-wanted list of the Sri Lankan Intelligence Units. He was operating both locally and internationally as a senior leader of the LTTE terrorist organization by handling the overseas operations of the terrorist organization including supply of ammunition and other requirements.]]

And the this has some relationship with the Dhanuna T Article in ada derana

Notably the comment.

-----------------------

Danuna, you are not only guilty for this crime, you are also guilty for treason. You held talks with Balasubramanium of Vancouver, one of the main LTTE figurs in Canada and discussed possibilities of supplying same items you supplied to the SL army. In that, you, your father in law (SF)(uncle in your langusge) and Malinda discussed of taking 30 cents from each bullet that you supply to LTTE. The plan was to keep 10 cents each. The plan did not work, as far as I know, but you at least were thinking of making money by providing bullets to the both sides. Your plan was to buy bullets from Russia and sell to the both sides. I still meet Bala.

ElwinBarak

-----------------------

Danu, I am sure that you still do remember me. I have a lot to disclose, if I will do so it will be much worse than Upul´s statement. Upul was wrong only on one point, you know that. But unfortunately you can not go against him at this moment. Can you? But in general, he said 99% truth.

ElwinBarak

------------------

Two many similaraties.

- Name bala subramanum vs subramaniaum sivakumar

- Dhanuna's alleged link operates from Canad and MOD arrest is operating "internationally"

- Dhanuna was on campaign in SL, and the arrested wanted man ahs visited SL with risk

- Arrested man "handling the overseas operations of the terrorist organization including supply of ammunition and other requirements", and Dhanuna accused of supplying same to SLDF, and in the above comment, trying to supply for pussycats.

Oooh this is sooo close.

------------------------

I heard that Basil takes facebook and online forums seriously. He has been checking out feedback on FB quite regularly during last few weeks.
As Ninja said it is important that the message is sent to MR that people do not tolerate some ministers and MPs. If this msg is sent in big numbers then there will be a serious consideration at least.
I suggest a FB group to be created with suitable title requesting MR to not give nominations to unworthy crooks, thugs, etc. The group admins can keep a list of such names that can be edited as per reasonable suggestions.

However I don't know how safe this is for individuals to create this group as some ministers are thugs. By looking at arrest of 3 for spreading rumors on FB, anything is possible.

Would like the opinion of all on this please?

Ninja, BreathSL really good idea. But how are we going to execute this is a big question.

Another thing is what ever said and done, Mervin took on SF head on. So, for MR to get rid of SF is going to be tough and would look pretty bad on MR. The others we should be able to campaign without much problem.

There are lot of expats in this blog. Some of them might not go to SL for a long time. Maybe one of them can create the facebook page.

Also I don't mind creating one if one wants. But should tell me what you guys need me to do.

But in reality what awaits for them is the fate of Silly-hunga Jayasuriya [7000+ mistaken voters all island] and Wikara-bahu Karunaratne [another 7000]. Latter have given up serious politics and taken on fulltime defamation of SL to earn a thrown away spare dollar from west [yeah the imperialist west]

Having said that SF can still contest GE in whatever form and can win a seat in this system. He has not lost all support like MS. MS, I think, expires with current parliament.

A day after SF's intentions for GE was published nobody is sheltering him as yet. This is a complete contrast to the case of months BEFORE his intention for PE was published that he was invited by every crook in the town.

Maybe Sarath Manamendra can come to a win win deal. He can house SF and win a seat for Nava Sihala Koti Urumaya via him. And further carry on the agenda. SU was wrong that SF fits TNA, but he fits the Nava Sihala Koti Urumaya lead by a previously arrested tiger supporter Sarath Manamendra.

Wait and see.
What a turn of luck.

So, what needs to be done is to get MR to give the blessing to SF to join the opposition. Then the cat fighting would start.

The other thing is, I don't mind SF now as long as he behaves and do not suck up to the west and learn to compete like a gentleman. The whole problem was his hate. He ran the campaign with a dark heart.

It is about time he does bit of meditation and stop and analyse what went wrong.

1. First he should learn to communicate.
2. He should learn how to run a government
3. Lean how to do constructive criticism, help our nation than trying to drag us all down.
4. Lean about good economic policies.
5. Stop blaming others for his own failures.
6. Learn to be patient and try to compete next election for PE.

It is good that a guy like this is around so that we keep the thugs in the MR camp in check.

Please note, this does not mean I will support SF in this GE. but after 4 years time if he is still around and he competes based on a good policy platform and MR team become pretty shit, I might reconsider.

Thusitha,

I am surprised that you would support SF to lead the SL Govt, knowing what you now know about him.

The character of a mature man of retirement age will not change so radically in 5-years, as you hope!

This man, blinded by ambition, jealousy and hate, turned on his fellow soldiers, allied himself with LTTE stooges (TNA), former terrorist rabble-rousers (JVP), and the man who presided over the partitioning of Sri Lanka (RW). All of this placed Sri Lanka's very survival at risk!

I will NEVER support SF for political leadership of Sri Lanka; his basic character is just too flawed. A man who cannot understand these issues and subjugates Sri Lanka's safety to his personal needs, is unacceptable to me.

I supported him for the Nobel Peace Prize when I was unaware of his flaws; I will not make that mistake again. His place now should remain that of a private citizen, trying to redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow citizens.

The Indian Agenda Revisited

Even before the burning embers of the Presidential Election in Sri Lanka grow cold, Indian pundits begin to pontificate, and fashion Indian policy towards Sri Lanka.

Power Devolution

Oblivious of the firestorm of rebellion and terrorism affecting 800 million of India's own 1200 million population, here they are again telling Sri Lanka what our priorities should be, and what is best for us.

Their universal solution to all of Sri Lanka's ills is to DEVOLVE power on communal bases to Sri Lanka's minorities, no matter that the much vaunted Indian Federal System, devolving power to the various regions of India, has failed miserably to still communal discord and strife.

So, we are told that the solution to "Sinhala majoritarianism" is to devolve power to Tamils ignoring the lessons we (and the Indians) have learned in confronting "intransigence and murderousness of the LTTE" driven by continuing and persistent Tamil racism.

We should tell India to BUTT OUT of Sri Lanka's politics and leave the solution of our problems to us.

We should tell India that we will NEVER PERMANENTLY EMBED communal divisions in our country through devolution of power to regions on communal bases.

We should tell them that we are pledged to creating to

ONE Nation INDIVISIBLE,
ONE People INDIVISIBLE, and
ONE Destiny INDIVISIBLE

with EQUAL RIGHTS for every citizen, and
EQUAL REPONSIBILITY to be borne by every citizen to LOVE, DEFEND and NURTURE our country.

We should tell them, that we will achieve that through Ethnic Integration and National Development NATIONWIDE until every citizen has an equal opportunity to enjoy his or her rights as a citizen.

National Defense

Note also how subtly the issue of "Militarization of Sri Lankan society" is woven into the discourse in an unfavorable light. This is the thin end of the wedge for disarming Sri Lanka and making it defenseless AGAIN, as in our recent past.

Sarath Fonseka's idiocy has driven fear of military coups into the Sri Lankan body politic, making it immensely more difficult to further strengthen the Sri Lanka Defense Forces.

The Sri Lanka Government should not deviate one iota from the path of a strong national defense. It should increase the Sri Lanka Armed Forces to 500,000 men, and supplement that force with a 3 million man trained and equipped National Guard comprising every able bodied man and woman capable of bearing arms.

Our defense needs will not decline in the foreseeable future, but will increase instead. The PRICE OF FREEDOM is the READINESS TO FIGHT and DIE if necessay. We must make it inconcievable and unprofitable for ANY ENEMY, big or small, internal or external, to attempt to deprive Sri Lanka of its sovereign right to determine its own policies, and its own place under the sun.

...............
Beyond Tweedledee

Despite the acrimony, it is clear that Mahinda Rajapaksa has won a resounding victory in Sri Lanka’s presidential election.

Ananda-USA said...

Beyond Tweedledee

......continued.....

Apprehensions do attend on this win, but there are two immediate positives: the prospect of political stability, necessary for the larger task of national reconciliation and devolution of power, and the fact that Rajapaksa is a known quantity for India. And New Delhi could certainly leverage the latter fact for implementing the complex reconciliation agenda. Then again, there is a question mark on Rajapaksa’s intent and sincerity on that very count.

For, he has also symbolised the idea of a Sinhala majoritarianism that historically has denied the minorities their rights. Indeed, on that score, there was little to choose between the re-elected president and the opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka. Both are part of a political discourse that, at the core, envisages a military solution to the Tamil problem. Of course, that vision was also abetted by the intransigence and murderousness of the LTTE, which eliminated all possible Tamil political alternatives. And one of the more necessary and critical tasks now would be to allow and aid the articulation of a post-LTTE Tamil democratic political formation.

An indicator of how tough this would be was the low turnout in the Tamil-dominated areas. Until the Tamil population’s humanitarian needs are met speedily, allowing them to move out of the camps and rebuild their lives, a package that is built around devolution of political power will remain an endlessly-deferred dream. Which, in turn, would legitimise inevitable calls for resurgence of Tamil militarism. The other question that impinges on this is whether Rajapaksa will now use his unquestioned political legitimacy to demilitarise Sinhala society itself or deploy it to seek an absolute majority in a possible early general election — with a view to tinker with the Constitution so as to enshrine a dynastic politics the Rajapaksa brothers have often been accused of. There has certainly been a streak of triumphalism to Rajapaksa. And New Delhi must do its utmost to convince Colombo that the route to a permanent solution does not lie through it.

Swarnajith Udana said...

Solution to the problem in Sri Lanka is to enshrine One Nation Nationalism instead multi Nation countryism.

There will be NO devolution of power in Sri Lanka on the communal bases like ethnicity, religion, language or caste .. NONE WHATEVER.

All of Sri Lanka belongs to ALL of its people .. EQUALLY. Not PART BY PART, but as a WHOLE.

ONE Nation Indivisble,
ONE People Indivisible,

Ananda-USA, this is so hilarious my migrated yankee brother.

Anyone who finds this objectionable should emigrate NOW to wherever he or she can get a better deal. Period!]

You actually knows how to milk well and shit in it. If I use the reverse logic, you don't like your own rationality or bana. That is why you have migrated.

You can't talk like that to Sri Lankans being an outsider.

By the way, Period is never a better deal.

Sinhala Yankee,

I really hate to explain myself. Since you asked, that means Ananda-USA and his close allies.

Forgive me of my inferior brain. As a chena boy my brain capacity may not be sufficient to understand what you superior white man influenced brain thinks. That is why I asked you to clarify. Still I am very proud to be a chena boy, and in any given day I will stand by chena boys.

Sorry, I have no intelligence you have since I never follow blogger IDs.

But, your attitude having the moderator is worry some. It is OK if your intention is to have a party with the like minded.

"I am pretty sure that your superior white influenced brain can fathom it."

I take pride in it, so does your buddy Ananda-USA.

How come you love one and hate another?

That is the chena mentality my friend.

It is kind of like this: When you fall in love with the vagina first, you can marry even your grand mother.

I like your writing above on the Economist.

[They will have no problem living and prospering in Sri Lanka, if they give up that attitude of superiority and entitlement, and join hands with the Sinhala and Muslim people of Sri Lanka to become Sri Lankan Patriots.]

I ask the question again.
How can we become patriots when we see our political leadership is stealing from Sri Lanka at daylight?

From your and my experience working with our yankee masters, we know they don't take commissions during transactions.

Is it OK for Sri Lankan political leaders to take commissions during transactions?

Is it OK to appoint your relatives to key positions around you if you have the power?

Is it OK to print your own picture in currency during the election?

A Buddhis monk once told me, the worst Sinhalese Buddhists are found in USA. I tend to agree with him. We are gold rushers and the mentality of them is the gold pot.

I wonder you are trying to use the naive mentality of your fellow friends in Sri Lanka from USA for your own personal gain?

I am not defending the government. It is possible SF had something cooking and evidence of that will initiate raids like this all over.

I had no sympathy for SF since he was fighting to improve the profits of his company setup to supply arms to our own army.

MR recruited another Prabhakaran to kill the original and wise enough to get rid of him during the right time.

We should be happy that SF did not won and we can't be happy MR won.

Country will develop and lives will return to normal. However we can be in a better situation in about few years if we have a leader like Obama.

My message to MR is there is greater hope and intelligence beyond relatives.

Let me explain it to you in my inferior brain capacity; I am trying really hard here.

(1) We have hundreds of causal readers who just read and do not carry conversations. Not only them, some of regular readers also get fooled by impersonators here. As a result, my inferior brain made me to keep track of the fakes. In that way, I know without working my inferior brain too much that it is a fake. Another inferior brain chena boy developed a web tool to collapse such comments automatically.

(2) Unfortunately, my inferior brain cares who writes it. That is a clear difference between a superior Yankee brain and an inferior chena boy brain.

(3) My inferior brain recognizes Ananda-USA is a truly patriotic chena boy to the core. Unlike your superior brain, I don't have a rational system to determine if somebody is a chena boy or not, it just the gut feeling that Ananda-USA is a one and you are not.

I really apologize if what I wrote is not up to your highly superior intellectual mind, but I tried as hard as I can.

You are trying hard to become the guarding of human intelligence.

We don't need a bad principle with a cane punishing apples he thinks bad.

If people are stupid enough not to distinguish between fakes and real, you can't help them.

[My inferior brain recognizes Ananda-USA is a truly patriotic chena boy to the core.]

There you go, now we are on the same page :)

[ Unlike your superior brain, I don't have a rational system to determine if somebody is a chena boy or not, it just the gut feeling that Ananda-USA is a one and you are not.]

I told yankee Ananda that there is a difference between literacy and rational intelligence. You are just another product of Sri Lankan education system - that is all.

We are all equally smart, only some have been exposed to the right education to discover our own brain, some are not. The rest (like Ananda) are fooling others.

I give you full credit since you are not trying to become someone else - you are yourself unlike my yankee twin Ananda.

Sinhala Yankee,

I can't and will not defend the government in every action. Beyond political posturing, I don't care if Fonseka teams up with anybody or son-in-law made money (as long as he sold the required equipment for a reasonable price). However, it is very important to investigate the breach of state secrets act by him at Sunday Leader. Furthermore, if their was an attempted coup, that needs to be investigated too. Regardless, I expect MR to pardon SF if he will be found guilty. That is because of my personal belief that he defended me and my country in the past.

The EU congratulates President Mahinda Rajapaksa on his re-election and stands ready to work with him and his Government in support of his objective of bringing sustainable peace to all people in Sri Lanka …..

Sam Perera said...

No_Mess,

I this that we should ask EU to shove GSP+, the one they used to help the scum of Sri Lanka, in their back canals now.

Shree said...

I will show you where we agree and not.

[I don't care if Fonseka teams up with anybody or son-in-law made money (as long as he sold the required equipment for a reasonable price).]

Fonseka can never team up with a relative to supply arms to our own army where he is the commander.

Why don't you see the serious conflict of interest here?

I understand our mission is to fight LTTE, however we shouldn't loose our own integrity while doing so.

In USA, if you hire an illegal immigrant, you will never be able to run for a serious public political office.

We are ready to accept our Commander in chief's ad hoc wrong doings since he fights with our enemy. That is the wrong approach. The bar should be higher for national interests.

[I expect MR to pardon SF if he will be found guilty. That is because of my personal belief that he defended me and my country in the past.]

You are going to sacrifice law and order since your personal belief and bias.

To me, this is like we each wants us to interpret the law and order anyway we want.

Isn't that why Sri Lanka is one of the most incoherent and chaotic nation in the world?

Shree said...

I was born to Sinhalese Buddhist intelligent parents. I was then shaped up by superior Yankee Intelligence.

Only difference between me and Yankee ANanda is that he agrees with you 100% unconditionally.

According to our own Parabhava Sutta, he is considered a bad friend for you (akalyana mithraya).

I should be considered your best friend since I am more honest with you.

I hope you see my logic based on Buddhist wisdom and Yankee English.
