We can compare the Tien An Men Square demonstrations with the Anti-Vietnam war protests that nearly brought the US Govt to its knees, and prevented the US from meeting its defense objectives, however ill-conceived, in Vietnam.
There is a LESSON here for Sri Lanka to LEARN. Sri Lanka can follow in the footsteps of China towards a glorious future by ASSURING POLITICAL STABILITY for one to two decades, while .. unlike China .. maintaining most democratic freedoms we already have.
But, like in Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea it must be a GUIDED DEMOCRACY fully aware of the enemies we confront. Complete individual freedom without ANY restrictions to assure a STABLE society has another name: ANARCHY.
Sri Lanka MUST NOT ALLOW those democratic freedoms to be exploited by its enemies to PREVENT the consolidation of the war gains, and initiate a spiral into an ANARCHIC MAELSTROM, before the ECONOMIC GAINS are realized to meet the aspirations of the common people. Once those aspirations are met, the citizens will not be so easily swayed by unrealistic promises, and can be accorded more democratic freedoms.

In the US ANYONE who is arrested is handcuffed in public upon arrest. If he resists arrest, he will also be lifted off his feet by the seat of his pants, and bundled into a police car without much ado, and will be charged with "resisting arrest" in addition to the other charges he was being arrested to face.

I suggest both the Government and the opposition to agree on a common electoral reform program before they go infront of people fot the general election.
They (both parties) should promise people that the commonly agreed electoral reform (constitutional reform) will be supported in the new Parliament. This will guarantee 2/3 majority for the constitutional reform.
Also, several lakhs form Fonseka's vote will flow into the Government and some vote form MR will flow back to the oppositon since some of the vote MR has recieved was for himself personally and not because of others.
Still I beleive at the end the Government will top up their current vote but this may not be sufficient for 2/3.
If Sri Lanka to have a effective Parliament then somehow electoral reform must go ahead.
This Government has the opportunity bring prosperity to the Nation.

Government needs to be careful though. The United States on Monday voiced concern about Sri Lanka’s arrest of the defeated opposition presidential candidate, fearing it would worsen divisions as the island recovers from war.
“We are following the situation closely and we have concerns that any action be in accord with Sri Lankan law,” State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told AFP.

Troops on Monday arrested Sarath Fonseka, a former army chief who lost presidential electionstwo weeks ago. State media said he would be charged with unspecified “military offenses.”
The January 26 election was Sri Lanka’s first nationwide vote since troops last year defeated Tamil Tiger rebels, ending a bloody 37-year ethnic insurgency that was among Asia’s longest-running conflicts.
“Whatever the government does has implications for how democratic institutions are perceived in the future,” Crowley said.
“It’s an unusual action to take right on the heels of an election,” he said of the arrest.
Another official earlier told AFP that US diplomats had been working behind the scenes to encourage President Mahinda Rajapakse’s government to be cautious in its treatment of the opposition.
Fonseka holds US residency, although officials said it did not affect their position toward him.
Fonseka and Rajapakse each tried to cast himself in the election campaign as the man who defeated the Tamil Tigers. Fonseka also enjoyed support of some Tamil groups who hoped for more conciliatory steps toward the minority.
