Separatist myth vs. facts: “Sri Lanka was never under unified rule during the time of the Sinhala kings”

Lies and damned lies

After the crushing defeat of LTTE terrorists last year, the overseas supporters of the terrorists have shifted into overdrive in spreading the outragoeous argument that Sri Lanka was never under unified rule during the time of the Sinhala kings. Whether it is LTTE's Tamilnet propaganda outlet last month(1) or supporters of separatism from days gone by, such as Dharini Rajasingham-Senanayake(2), the claim is that British unified the administration of Lanka for the first time in 1833, and, upon granting independence to the inhabitants of the island, handed this unitary state to a Sinhalese controlled government in the year of 1948.

We as patriots and defenders of integrity of our motherland should always be aware of the true facts with regards to the history of Sri Lanka. The history of the ancient period of Sri Lanka is the history of monarchical rule. Here is historian S. Pathmanathan on the subject of the Sinhalese monarchy(3):

An outstanding feature of the Sinhalese monarchy is its almost unbroken continuity lasting for nearly two thousand years and its close connections with Buddhist institutions. No dynastic state has ever had such a continuity and stability in the neighboring Indian subcontinent from where the culture and political ideas of the ancient Sinhalese were mostly derived. Nor could any of the kingdoms in some of the countries of South-East Asia-Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam — where Buddhism exerted a profound influence, lay claim to such a long continuity and historical experience. The long and unbroken continuity and stability in the political and cultural tradition of the Sinhalese kingdom (s) was partly the result of the protection, provided by the island's insularity, the island's manageable territorial dimensions and the physiographic features which permitted control over a major part of it from a single dynastic centre before the thirteenth century. Another contributory factor was probably the absence of social classes able to challenge dynastic authority

To examine this concept of territorial integrity and unified rule by Sinhalese monarchs we need to examine how the Sri Lankan state came to be formed during earliest period of its history, how it evolved, and the nature of it leading up to the arrival of European powers, the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British.

Early State Building

According to Mahavamsa, the story of man in Sri Lanka begins with the arrival there, sometime in the 5th century BC, of Vijaya the legendary founder of the Sinhalese. Beneath this charming exercise in myth-making lurks a kernel of historical truth – the colonization of the island by Indo-Aryan tribes from northern India(4). These settlements were established and developed in several parts of the island from about the fifth century BC. The earliest settlers were those on the west-central coast who pushed inland along the banks of Malvatu Oya and founded a number of riverbank settlements. Their seat of government was Upatissagama where the first ‘Kings’ of the Vijayan dynasty reigned. The settlers on the east coast would have moved inland along the Mahaveli River. Somewhat later, there was an independent band of immigrants who settled in Rohana in the south-east, on the mouth of Valave River. The settlers came in numerous clans or tribes. Among these clans were families of nobility, the Lambakannas, Moriyas, Kalingas, Tarachchas, Balibhojakas and others. By 250 BC, there is evidence of a recognizably literate culture in the main areas of settlements – a contribution of early Indo-Aryan settlers – even though the outlaying communities may have remained pre-literate(5).

According to historian K.M. DeSilva it is not possible to draw a firm conclusion on the process of political evolution that led to the emergence of a kingdom unifying the whole island under its sway. The inscriptional evidence points to a situation where Anuradhapura kingdom, which was founded by Pandukabaya, the third king of the Vijayan dynasty, as merely the strongest, among several in the northern plains and in the Malaya and Rohana regions. This structure had not changed substantially during the rule of Devanampiya Tissa, though he held a consecration ceremony, and assumed the title Devanampiya Tissa maharaja. In spite of this, other rulers on the island did not readily acknowledge his sovereignty. The influence he had in the southern kingdom of Rohana was minimal despite the establishment of the Kingdom at Mahagama by Mahanaga, his brother. This collateral branch of the royal house at Anuradhapura eventually unified Rohana and thereafter established control over the whole island as well. It took them a century and a half to achieve it. The key figure in the unification of the south was Kavantissa, during whose rule the authority of Mahagama began to be felt throughout Rohana. His son and successor Dutthagamani took the offensive against Elara, the Dravidian usurper of the northern kingdom, and established control over the whole island. It was, in fact, the first significant success of centripetalism over centrifugalism in the island history.(6)

The classical Sinhalese kingdom of Anuradhapura

The kingdom of Anuradhapura, the classical Sinhalese kingdom, lasted nearly 1,500 years and the city of Anuradhapura lasted as long as the capital city. It was the capital of the island kingdom since the time of King Dutthagamani (161-137 BC) to the end of the 10th century, longevity unmatched by any other capital city in south Asia. The political history of the kingdom can be divided into three distinct phases or periods.

The first phase is the early Anuradhapura period, the kingdom’s first seven centuries to the reign of Dhatusena in the 5th century, the principle feature of which was the rise and consolidation of power. The middle period saw considerable instability, particularly in the 7th century, and the regular entry of Tamil mercenaries brought to the island by Sinhalese kings to help prop up their power, or by the aspirants to the throne.(7) The late Anuradhapura kingdom saw two centuries of political stability, the 8th and 9th centuries, followed by century of increasing stress and instability as the Sinhalese kingdom struggled to cope with external threats from south Indian kingdoms. Those threats became more formidable in the 10th century and culminated in the absorption, if not the kingdom itself, of at least most of it, under the Chola empire(8), while the great city of Anuradhapura ceased to be the capital city.

The Polonnaruva Kingdom

The expulsion of the invading Cholas from the kingdom happened after a long war of liberation and the restoration of a Sinhalese dynasty on the throne of Sri Lanka under King Vijayabahu I. The return to order and authority became solidified under King Parakramabahu I, the remarkable king who achieved such a tremendous amount of constructive achievement in administration, economic rehabilitation(9), religion and culture. After him the only Polonnaruva king to rule over the whole island was Nissanka Malla, who gave the country a brief decade of order and stability before the speedy and catastrophic break-up of the hydraulic civilization of the dry zone. The collapse of the ancient Sinhalese kingdom of the dry zone is one of the major turning points of Sri Lankan history.(10) The Magha’s invasion and the orgy of destruction in which his cohorts indulged is regarded as the main cause in the disintegration of Sri Lanka’s hydraulic civilization.

The Fragmentation of the Sri Lankan Polity and Arrival of the Portuguese

In the quest for safety against invasion from south India, Polonnaruva was abandoned after Magha’s rule and the next three kings ruled from Dambadeniya. One ruler made Yapahuva his royal residence and another Kurunegala. Sinhalese power again shifted from Kurunegala to the central mountains further to the south, a region that has never in the past been a center of civilization. It was in the 14th century that a kingdom was set up in Gampola on the Mahaveli River as its capital. In the second half of the 14th century, the fortunes of the Sinhalese reached their nadir. The writ of the Gampola kings appears to have run in Rohana as well as the western sea board(11), but for a short period in the 14th century, Jaffna under the Aryacakravartis was the most powerful kingdom on the island. They seemed poised for establishment of Tamil supremacy over Sri Lanka, but were foiled in this by the defeat inflicted by the forces of the Gampola kings in 1380(12).

The Jaffna kingdoms’ expansion southwards had been checked, but the Sinhalese had no reason to believe that this had been halted for good. The capital of the Sinhalese kingdom was moved once more, this time from the mountains to the west coast near Colombo, to Kotte. In 1411, Parakramabahu VI began what was to be a very long reign of fifty-five years founded what came to be called the Kotte kingdom(13). His greatest achievement was to check what seemed to be a well-nigh irreversible trend – the break-up of Sri Lankan polity. He was the first Sinhalese king since the days of Parakramabahu I and Nissanka Malla to bring the whole island under his rule, the last ever to do so. Within forty years of his death, the Kotte kingdom, weakened by internal disputes, faced the formidable challenge of the Portuguese in the first phase of Sri Lanka’s long encounter with western colonialism, an encounter that lasted till the middle of the 20th century.

Conclusion

It is not possible to say that Sri Lanka was ruled as united country for a straight 2500 years. No country in the world can boast of such an achievement. However, neither was Sri Lanka always ruled as multiple polities by multiple sets of kings, as implied by the Tamil separatist movement. Certainly, the territory under the ancient Sinhala kings did not remain constant. Some kings gained territory, others lost parts of it. There were bouts of civil war. Subordinate rulers tried to take advantage of this. But Sri Lanka has been viewed as a unified whole during ancient times. That unity may have been in some cases conceptual more than territorial. It may have included only a formal recognition of the sole consecrated ruler, but this signifies an understanding of the concept of territorial unity. It is up to us, the die-hard patriots, to counter this vile separatist claim whenever and wherever we encounter it.

Lanka slams US war crimes

Sri Lanka has slammed the US saying it has blood on its hands after a shocking video showed a US aircraft firing indiscriminately towards civilians in Iraq killing atleast 25 of them including two journalists.

Government Defence Spokesperson Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told Daily Mirror online that while the US has been accusing Sri Lanka of human rights allegations and have repeatedly called for a war crime probe, they seem to have ‘conveniently forgotten’ its own issues in Iraq.

Minister Rambukwella also called on the US to conduct an investigation on it’s own troops before pointing fingers at developing countries.

“These are the world’s so called super powers. They have always tried to bully developing countries but have ignored the blood on their own hands. This is nothing new, it has been happening for years. They say we are guilty but we all know what happened in Iraq,” Minister Rambukwella said.

Further reacting strongly to the video Minister Rambukwella also questioned the UN on its silence and queried why the UN Secretary General was failing to appoint an expert panel to advise him on the US involvement in Iraq.

He also said that it was due to this reason, that the Sri Lankan government had always questioned the credibility of the ‘strong statements’ which were released by the west and the UN against Sri Lanka.

The investigative organization WikiLeaks, this week released military video of what it describes as three incidents of an “indiscriminate slaying” by U.S. forces near Baghdad on July 12, 2007.

WikiLeaks said the encounters killed as many as 25 civilians, including two Reuters journalists. The U.S. military said in a statement at the time that a total of 11 people died in the strikes conducted by U.S. and Iraqi forces.

The video is shot from two Apache helicopters on patrol in Iraq. The choppers were responding to reports of AK-47 gunfire in the suburb of New Baghdad when military personnel on board spotted a group of nine to 12 people walking through a courtyard.

The military contends that the U.S. followed the appropriate "Rules of Engagement" during the incidents.

The video shows military personnel aboard the Apaches indicating they spot the suspects toting several AK-47s and several RPG's. But WikiLeaks contends that the Reuters photographers were only carrying cameras, which the military mistook for weapons. The helicopters circle multiple times before opening fire.

In the second incident captured by the video, U.S. forces open fire again after a van arrives to pick up casualties from the first attack.

Later, American ground troops pull into the courtyard in an armored Humvee and appear to drive over one of the casualties.

Soon after, the same helicopters spot several individuals entering a nearby building. U.S. troops receive permission to strike again, this time with Hellfire missiles.

Julian Assange, of WikiLeaks, released the video at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. He said the behaviour of the pilots is like they're playing a video game. He also did not say how WikiLeaks obtained the video.

A senior military official at the Department of Defense told Fox News on the condition of anonymity that "an investigation of the incidents confirmed our belief that these attacks were justified."

"The individuals who were killed, apart from the Reuters journalists, were involved in hostile activity," the official said.

Sri Lankan war zone doctor stands for election

This is what Kate Allen, Director of Amnesty International UK, said on 19th May 2009
'Amnesty International is deeply concerned about the well-being and whereabouts of these three doctors. The three were employed by the government and were there to help ordinary civilians.
'Unless they are charged with a recognisable criminal offence and remanded by an independent court, they should be released immediately.
'At present they have no access to lawyers or their family and we have no guarantees about their safety.
'We are calling on all our members worldwide to write to the Sri Lankan authorities expressing their fears for Dr T Sathiyamoorthy, Dr T Varatharajah and Dr Shanmugarajah.'

Don’t worry AI, they are free. So free, they can even stand for election!

This is what i have been saying/writing elsewhere for some time. We need an "independent" looking group to "monitor" these things. The best way to counter the bogus HR accusations and "war crimes" nonsense is to fire it right back at them.

1)Need to accuse the US/Blake/UN/Die-ass-pora of creating the human shield to engineer a humanitarian catastrophe to pro-long war and save the LTTE leaderships, it was their idea, passed onto the LTTE from Tamils in the West to justify intervention. That pretty much absolves us of all blame and exposes all the hypocrites.

2)With regards to "human rights" we need to accuse the West of sponsoring, funding (and creating using history for this part) Tamil violence and terrorism hence why there are "human rights violation". Need to state that the Tamil die-ass-pora is the LTTEs "international leadership" backed by the West (use Blakes visits to Radukumar and Tamil activities in London & Oslo).

3)Then we need to show how they are trying to ferment racism and hate by allowing die-ass-pora activities to keep the nation divided.

It can be done cleverly, no need for direct accusation for 2 & 3 but basic implications which then convey the intended meaning.

@ Google,

Hikz.

So called "truth commission" failed.

Looks like South Africa going to head for more problems, as cruel as this sounds it is good news for us.

Funny thing about South Africa is that the British still hold all the wealth and significant power. The Blacks -save for a few- are still poor beggars they have been since Europeans carved up Africa. And there is simmering tension over this in the country, its why its economy has stagnated, crime through the roof (something like 50 people killed a day in Johannesburg alone, non-stop car jackings elsewhere) and the country is not going any where forward.

Also Tamils who batted with Suddha right up to 1994 (they were taken their by British -surprise surprise- to crush the Boers in the first place) are now batting with the ANC to keep their "middle class" status Hikz. Comically we Tamiz in SL want return to apartheid in SL as under suddha hikz.

Could this also be colonisation?

SLN expands to dominate coastal belt to thwart future threat

By Shamindra Ferdinando

As part of Sri Lanka’s strategy to thwart any fresh LTTE-build-up, the Navy will set up cantonments at key locations in the northern, eastern and north-western coast. The long term project envisaged what an authoritative security official said was a cohesive deployment of assets to re-open sea supply routes to bring in arms, ammunition and other equipment. He emphasised that the destruction of the LTTE’s military capability should not give the country a false sense of security.

In keeping with government strategy, the SLN had launched construction of the first cantonment on the north-western coast and work on the second cantonment, too, would begin soon also in the same region, he told The Island.

Contrary to reports that the government and the Navy had caused irreparable damage to Wilpattu National Park by opening the old Mannar road for military and civilian movement, the restoration of the once abandoned road, too, had resulted in the LTTE’s defeat, he said. The Navy deployed troops in the region in September 2007 after the Army pulled out troops for offensive operations on the Vanni front.

Director General of Media Centre for National Security Lakshman Hulugalle said that the old Mannar road (B 379 Puttalam-Marichchikaddi) had been re-opened last January along with the re-opening of the Jaffna-Kandy A9 road.

The use of that road would be restricted, he said.

The LTTE had extensively used their bases situated along the north-western region to bring in supplies from India across the Gulf of Mannar.

It was unfortunate that a section of the civil society was opposed to the re-opening the road and ongoing efforts to deny the LTTE an opportunity to make a comeback, Navy Spokesman Captain Atula Senarath told The Island.

He said that deployment of additional assets and men would be necessary to tackle any future threat. Major deployments along the coast and satellite bases would strengthen existing naval cordons in northern, eastern and north-western seas. The ongoing project would not only gradually enhance measures against arms smuggling but help prevent bringing in contraband, including heroin, he said.

The LTTE brought in arms, ammunition and equipment for almost three decades before the Navy destroyed eight LTTE floating arsenals on the high seas in four separate encounters in 2006 and 2007, and wiped out the group last May.

This is music to my ears. We have been begging our defence planners to do this all the way. Needless to say that the word cantonment has a real significance. I can see things coming up in Kokili, Mulathivu, Challai, Nachchikuda, and Vidaththalthivu other than the existing locations. for the defence purposes.

Pol,

It is very unlikely that SLA is going to be sidelined for any reason. Other than the existing locations, we need to build military cantonments in Iranamadu and Mulathivu. Perhaps, Iranamadu can be a SLA and SLAF operation and Mulathivu is massive SLA, SLAF, and SLN like Trinco or Palaly-Karinagar complex. The key word here is cantonments. we shall never forget that we need such cantonments in Hambanthota, Diyathalawa, Oluwil etc. I hope to see all these things in my life time. It seems that our defence authorities got a good sense of what needs to be done to deter future threats.

what the hell this RACIST TULF leader ASS is talking about???

"There is one more serious and very sensitive issue which I am sure you are not aware of. The days in which religious beliefs were forced upon the people with the power of weapons are no more. Let not such things be repeated in this country after a lapse of 200 years. Permit me to bring to your notice the adverse comments I hear from various people at various places and at various levels. The whole country is aware how devoted I am to Buddhism. You are not unaware of this fact. I have lost count of the number of visits I paid to Mahiyangana, Nagadeepa and Kelaniya.

Although I am a Hindu, I had paid homage to Lord Buddha’s Sacred Tooth Relics several times. I got the blessings of the Mahanayake Theras on and off. Therefore I have a moral duty to point out to you what the people here think and talk about. They are not anti Buddhist. They take pride in saying that Sangamitta Therani landed with the Sacred Bo-sapling at KKS in Jaffna. What they are now talking about is the manner in which Buddhism is forced on them in an area under military control, where people will not dare to talk.

I had said more than once that on the humanitarian side, their contribution is wonderful. I have seen it myself during my rounds in Jaffna. People are very appreciative of the conduct of the army but seem to be objecting seriously the manner in which Buddhism is propagated in the North. Let the Government leave it to the clergy to propagate Buddhism and not to the forces."

security forces propogating buddhism????

this bugger has gone mad.

erecting religious places where a large number of buddhists stay is not at all a crime. MOST SLA are buddhists and it is ok if they build buddhist places of worship in the north for their regular use in areas not owned by private individuals.

ado, ado, ado (i mean sinhala ADO!!).

there is nothing wrong in that pol or paul, should i say.

lol!!

(there was this guy named paul in syria. he persecuted christians until he realised his crime. then he reversed his acts and became saint paul.) got nothing to do with you.

don't fall into ananda singari's trap. he says the same thing about buddhist temples/shrines in the north.

the problem is some MFs connected to NGOs engaged in missionary work ALSO sympathise with tamil elam MFs. the church (which is made up of DUMB leaders bcos only the DUMBEST kid in the class goes to the seminary, at least in third world countries) ignored it for the sake of "peace". TE MFs thought this is approval and started getting some suckers openly to cocksuck vezapillai.

it is their fault. don't blame the church in general.

anyway according to the holy bible, jesus recruited fishermen and told them that from now on, you will catch ppl (for christianity)!!!!

buddhism is also spreading. let ppl decide what is best for them, freely.

even MR is not keen in bringing a fully enforceable anti-conversion act.

no one will.

(BTW i was born jewish but one of my parents is christian. no jewish places of worship in SL (at that time) thanks to some sakkili MFs who forced SL to follow an anti-jewsih approach. fcuk them all!! parents had an option. either to let us grow without any regligious practices into barbarians or put to available religious classes/upbringing. didn't change it since 11 yrs. this happened to many SL jews. but it doesn't matter. culture and religion have their seperate places. anyway i defend what is mine without taking away what is others.)

Moshe,
Too bad to hear that we don’t have Jewish places of worship in SL.
The sad fact is, that is not the way religions get spread. I looked at stats on spread of Christianity in South Africa. From 1950 to now, it has gone from 20mil to around 100 mil people. They go to poor countries, scream on top of their heads the majority is treating you badly, follow XXX and we will save you. Uneducated people fall in to that and start believing in those religions. This is a form of religious colonization. If you look at China, they are trying to do there best to revive Christianity through this form. As soon as these religions comes the nation gets the Colombian mind set and start getting divided. This is another way to divide and conquer. Most of the time Christians do it in goodness of their hearts, but the out come is religious tensions within the countries. But not every one is responsible for this, once I was taught by a German Reverend. There were only two Buddhist students and the rest were Catholics. He never ever mentioned anything religious to us or tried to convert us. I have utmost respect for people like that. It is best that religious leaders never try to convert, instead show what they can offer and then let the people decide.

Anonymous said...

Moshe,

I do not have a problem with Christianity as a whole.

I do have a problem with evangelical nut cases (like the Colombian clan) who advocate their "final solution" on the nation.
Same types who go around saying "Buddhism is the cause of all problems in Sri Lanka".

It is no secret what these people were doing after the Tsunami, "harvesting souls" and all. These churches would also pop up disguised as "community centres" or call themselves Dharma schools hauling in Buddhist children and try and convert them. Nut jobs like World Vision are on example – I believe their proclamation in 2000 was to convert all Children in Sri Lanka to Christianity by 2015.

Part of the reason that Myanmar has sanctions from the US is due to "pressure" from these Christian converting groups who see 40 million souls to gather. Soon as that junta collapses you can say goodbye to the Buddhist population (Aun Sung whatever is the Ranil Myanmar). It is also why "Christian Science Monitor" obsesses over Myanmar and SL.

They are the same ones who "give evidence" about SL and the US then issues BS reports of "lack of religious freedom" here. That former US Ambassador bitch to SL who has such hate for Sinhalese is also an evangelical nut. She runs the CSIS which pours scorn on this nation and Buddhism with bogus tales of Christians denied freedom (to convert that is) and being "hunted down and killed".

South Korea went from 80% Buddhist in the 50s to 60% Evangelical Christian today with the Buddhists now being persecuted, humiliated and called "indoctrinated into a satanic cult from birth". Ranilams clan envisioned the same for SL regardless.

It is no secret about the overt support the Church gives the LTTE calling them "holly warriors" and what that nut from Madu was doing (the Vatican also gave him the nod).

Seriously Moshe you are off the mark if you think the Church has been “mislead” and is “innocent” in this matter. That is such BS.

buddhism is also spreading. let ppl decide what is best for them, freely.

Well that is not happening, money, bribes, war and misery is being used to “harvest souls”.
I have an issue with illegal conversions and taking advantage of poor, destitute people.

Do not purposely mix that with Andasangree's bs whining.

As Thusita says, there are some very good, honest Christian leadership who have no despicable agendas and such.

But in third world countries there are more who cause problems than do not, a lot of them have their "source" funding in America (save for World Vision who's HQ is in Australia).

While countries like France, Germany, Britain and most of Canada are secular the US and Gayway are not.

Also with Christianity in a sort of decline in Europe (recent scandals not helping them) they go looking for "souls" in Asia and use poverty and war to their advantage.

Just see what is happening in Orissa in India resulting in violence (Christian evangelicals groups in SL who engage in similar activity are fortunate as they are not subjected to violence).

I have no problems with ordinary Christians in SL, it is sections of the clergy that give secret nods of approval to violence & conversions.
In fact many Sinhala Christians have become disillusioned with Christianity because of their "Buddhists deserve it" type sermons over the war etc. I'd know my father was Christian and was disgusted with this "practice" -always speaks out against it. My mother (Buddhist) did not "deserve to die". He campaigns/educates against illegal conversions to this day and has been offered bribes to being threatened to stop him "stopping their good work".

[I do not have a problem with Christianity as a whole.]

Pol,

Agree with your post 100%.

Like you, I have no problem with Christianity, especially since I got to know Christians and Chistianity better after I came to the US. Within their own Christian majority societies, they are largely tolerant, compassionate and good.

The problem begins when religious fanatics among them focus on vulnerable third world countries for harvesting souls and dupe the Christians back at home into thinking that this is a good thing that should be funded by them.

Like you, I hate missionaries of all types who pile into poor countries "harvesting souls" through trickery, making conversion conditional for receiving humanitarian aid, and advancing their other agendas by this means. I advocate kicking out all foreign missionaries, of all religions, out of Sri Lanka.

One of the reasons they come to third world countries, rather than converting people in their own countries, is because people are moving away from religion in most advanced countries .. and they find it very difficult to convert anyone in those countries .. and the "head count" is falling.

So, they "buy" souls in poor Hindu, Buddhist and Moslem countries in Asia and/or Africa with minimal funds. If any country protests and tries to exclude them, their political lobbies shift into high gear, and target those countries with International Human Rights Abuse Charges.

In this way, South Korea that was primarily a Buddhist country was transformed into a primarily Catholic Country in the last two decades.

In the US, many Catholics are heartily sick of the established Catholic Church, particularly because of their inaction on sex abuse by priests. This has shaken the faithful tremendously. Recently, Newsweek reported that less than 50% of nominal Catholics attend Church. In California alone, there are over 800 lawsuits against the Church by sex abuse victims, and losing parishes are selling church property to pay the court awards.

Pope Benedict is now adding fuel to this fire with his recent pronouncements defending his cover up of sex abusing priests when he was a Bishop in charge of those cases before he became the Pope, and for largely continuing that policy.

He is in DEEP TROUBLE now, and is being seriously challenged by laymen and some clergy.

Ananda you hit the same points as me :))

After a while we agree at last :))

One of my biggest concerns is Myanmar and what will happen when that idiot Junta collapses.

As oppressive as it is it is the only thing ironically keeping Buddhism alive there/preventing the nation being swamped by these evangelical nutcases coming to harvest souls. Like I said above that is part of the reasons for sanctions by the US (the other being the Juntas pro-China policy & the gas reserves).

When that junta collapses you can say goodbye to Buddhism in Myanmar.

pol,

the church is the vatican-centred church. i too condemn what some of these evangelical idiots are doing. they are a bunch of animals.

but NOTHING is imposed by the "church" on SL.

SL's church leaders by ommission have done wrongs.

they seriously lack leadership.

apart from that there is no CHURCH INSTIGATED seperatism/violence/apartheid, etc.

it's like the police. who goes to the police??? ppl from the same corrupt, murderous, dirty society. so you have to expect a little bit of this from the police as well. when tamil elamists become bishops (kasippu josef), they don't change. they change the church.

christianity may be on the way down in europe but they match it by increased funding to convert other parts of the world.

for instance south korea and japan, 2 "buddhist" countries will SOON become christian countries at the rate the christian population increases. china is the 5th largest christian country and shows hell of a lot of potential. it is tipped to be the 3rd b4 long.

when this happens, it will put more pressure on third world countries.

in that situ what matters is to SALVAGE the church from tamil elamists than blame it.

The JVP is presenting a poor picture of the man which would be detrimental to the image of the General as a "war veteran". Moshe,

The church does not want to be "salvaged" because it silently approves. The Sinhala Church does it as well.

Remember the "Christian awake/alert" message back in 2005 telling Sinhala Christians to vote for Ranilam, there were no eelamoids behind that.

Like i said in an above post the Christian clergy have welcomed deaths of Buddhists in the war (my father abandoned Christianity after this), they do not say it in so many words, but the message is there.

Ordinary Sinhala Christians do not like it and have become disillusioned or have questioned their clergy directly -so they have watered it down, but when given the chance always sneak in "they deserve to die" clause, again in not so many words but they do do it.

The Colombians and their special church of course love it and ask for more.

Moshe,

Gonseka, JVP & SLG article.

Very true.

They are cutting a pathetic picture which as mentioned is a two fold action. One is to use him to get votes and at the same excuse themselves from any upcoming humiliation at the GE by saying "our leaders is in jail waa waa".

Janaral will be forgotten after the GE in politics/election wise.

Thinking out loud:

Danger exists they might try using him as "rallying call" for Army deserters (ones in his gang or not), JVP cadres and even the Army itself to cause a "split" (is it true that 1/3 Army is still loyal to Gonseka???) to gather numbers for another uprising.

Uprising will be crushed but it will paint a bleak picture of SL.
And that is what these tossers want, to make SL look unstable and screw up investments.

It is possible that US is backing, funding and planning this as well, hence why JVP suddenly fell in love with the US. They might have agreed to support them when they launch a Marxist takeover (that is what the JVP is at heart after all) in a similar way how they backed Gonseka for a Military takeover. Then once its done, fuck SL side ways with sanctions etc. If it fails and there is violence they can also slap sanctions on SL. So another win win for them.

We really need to sort these JVP monkeys out.

Religious leaders go in there and convert them to their particular religion. It is a type of brain washing to me. Every religion would do it when there is a religious vacume (not just Chritians). But from the statistics you can see who have taken the lions share of religious conversion.

You asked why is it worrying, the reason it is worrying is as every thing life, there should be competition among every thing. If there is a monopoly, it is a danger signal. The most worrying aspect is the western worshipping mind set that it brings to our nations.

Interesting discussion about Evangelisation ....

In fact even the secular Europe gives its gleeful go-ahead to evangelisation. Nothing surprising, they call themselves Secular Christians !!!

None can live without faith, everybody wants something to cling onto in this troublesome world, which must end by death, loosing everything at the end.

The west will always cling to the bible either culturally or religiously and pass a 100% occupied hectic life toying with science & technology.

Western mind is materialist and is extremely fragile. It needs more and more people who worship and approve their way of life. So our little Lanka is a throne in their side.

Also, a converted Lankan gets not only a new religion but a new culture also. He is made to feel nothing when he sees Parakrama Samudra, Sigiriya or Ruwanwalisaeya. He is alienated from the soil and the colonial slave shackle which were on his hands get stuck inside his brain.

West is all smiles - this alienated person will be the best friend of any adventure. He will invest through him to amass more and more profits.

One may ask, why not?

Simply because, the linear progress advocated by the West is a failure. The de-natured USA is becoming the next Sahara. Europe's concrete jungles are making life a hell. With the earth in these lands poisoned by the "highly advanced modern agriculture", nothing edible can be produced for another 100 years.

The pharma companies will make hay while sun shines with the linear West going linearly sick.

Open your eyes, you will see.

What a greedy bunch of idiots ....

Moshe, listen to Buddha. Don't be like the famous spoon which will never taste the soup in which it passes all its life. You are in the land of Buddha. Wink, Wink .... How about a conversion … Wink, Wink.

There are mass scale illegal conversions and taking advantage of poor, destitute, war ravaged people by the Church.

SL is a big victim of this as well, the IDP camps became/still are a hotbed for these activates as did the post-Tsunami period.

It is wrong and unacceptable.

Moshe tries brushing it under the carpet as insignificant or small scale, but it is not.
Regardless of what Moshe says the Church backs the LTTE and violence against Buddhism, only when Sinhala Christians opposed/questioned such open preaching of this did the Sinhala Church go quiet about it.

Akon incident is another good example, Church used that event to champion Sirasa which like the Church makes no secret of its anti-Buddhist mindset. The Da Vinci Code was banned on the “request” of the Church as the film “defamed the image of Christianity” and they even threatened violence “we cannot control the response of angry Christians”. Da Vinci Code was a load of crap anyway and Christians here or elsewhere are not that stupid. But it reflects the hypocrisy of the Church. They go around Buddhist bashing in some covert form or another but want Christianity “protected”.

They even use “human rights” and “religious freedom” to carry out unethical conversions. People are not being given a “choice”, they are being, bribed, tricked and conned and told if they do not follow Christianity they will forever be condemned into the misery they are in or in the case of war & tsunami it is Gods punishments, so “repent”. It is simply WRONG.

After the Tsunami these groups even hired local lackeys to convert people and if you got a 1000 converts you get a passport to the West (guaranteed by the US State Department as some of these evangelical groups claimed to have the connections).

When Gangaramaya Somarathna Hamuduruwo died the Evangelical Church of Sri Lanka leadership lit firecrackers and told his flock and potential new recruits the “non-believer got what he deserved” because he was the biggest opposer and exposer of these evangelicals conversion programmes immediately after the Tsunami and went around warning people.

Illegal/unethical conversions are a serious issue and there are so many of these groups working in SL, in Buddhist areas. One group of doctors/medics “helping Children” and “running welfare programmes” in Matara are also hardcore Christians brainwashing those children. This is not “propaganda” or exaggerations, it is fact.

Whats wrong with State Media, remember they said no one watches it. Gonseka even beat up two State media journalists, Gonseka then complained State media not reporting him.

Add to that "media freedom" if State Media wants to report in favour of the Government that is its freedom to do so no? Hikz.

Who is stopping people from watching Sirasa and doing Facebook polls?

Also Mangala and Ranilam also said they will get a majority in the polls, earlier they said "do not let the Government get 2/3rds".

And we all know how the UNP ran election campaigns hikz. 1977-1994 elections were so free and fair no body bothered to vote, they let UNP thugs do it for them.

In 2005 State and all private media backed Ranilam. Ranilam still lost. Hikz.

What's needed to get the ball rolling against unethical conversions may be a sting operation against the perpetrators. This should then be used in the media to justify any legal action.

Our private media like Swarnavahini should be encouraged to do something like this. What is even better may be to get a foreign, trustworthy broadcaster involved for maximum publicity (perhaps towards the conclusion of the sting).

I also know there are Sri Lankan harvesters working in at least one Western country!

Google,

We need education programmes and debate. Legislation against conversions is something i disagree with.
However NGOs and Western groups who carry out such activities with impunity currently need to be banned & deported.

Government needs to get Hindu priests to spearhead the move, we will then get 100% backing from Injuns :))

In fact Injun media would be a good tool to draw international attention (to name and shame the evangelical groups) to illegal conversions in SL, another great way to bitch slap the hyopcritical West too.

Thusitha is RIGHT, it is VERY WORRYING, and it may impact China's support for Sri Lanka in the future.

We recall how the Catholic Church ALWAYS supported the LTTE and in the past criticizing the GOSL.

To them, the reputed Christian religion of many of the Tamil terrorists was more important than their duty to the nation they were citizens of, and its largely non-Christian people.

Tamil and Sinhala Bishops and priests, went to LTTE controlled territory and advised them how to achieve their goals, assisted them in leveling human rights charges against the GOSL, went to India, to the UN, and to other foreign countries conducting extra-national diplomacy on their own, undermining Sri Lanka in close collaboration with NGOs. These are activities that I label as TREASON.

If China .. Sri Lanka's protector and ally now .. and the Theravada Buddhist countries of IndoChina, are beguiled away from Buddhism and converted to Christianity .. where will Sri Lanka find a comforting block of co-religious allies in the world in the future. Sri Lanka will be isolated!

Remember, led by Vietnam, many of these countries will become the next wave of resource-rich economic growth engines of the world.

While we are not biased against any religion, we must remember the bitter lessons of the past administered to us, and the continuing global agendas of religious fanatics of all stripes, and their impact on Sri Lanka.

S. Lanka shares hits record on political stability hope

By Ranga Sirilal and Shihar Aneez

COLOMBO, April 6 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's shares hit a new record high on Tuesday as investors bought shares across the board hoping for political stability after April 8 parliament polls will help the country to implement much needed reforms.

The All-Share Price Index .CSE of the Colombo Stock Exchange hit a new all-time high of 3882.23, surpassing its previous high of 3865.17 hit on March 15. It closed 2.34 percent or 88.45 points firmer at 3,870.35.

"Investors hope there will be a strong and stable government that could implement all the reforms needed for sustainable economic growth," said Jaliya Wijeratne, director of institutional sales at SMB Securities.

Sri Lanka holds parliamentary polls on April 8, in which President Mahinda Rajapkasa's ruling party is seeking a two-thirds majority to change the island nation's constitution and implement fiscal reforms for better economic growth in future.

For Sri Lanka's key political risks, see [ID:nRISKLK]

Analysts said the banking sector led the surge with an 8.32 percent rise in private lender Hatton National Bank HNB.CM and 3.65 percent gain in the largest listed bank, Commercial Bank of Ceylon COMB.CM.

Analysts said speculation that Commercial Bank was buying into another listed bank, and a large buy order by an institutional investor into Hatton National Bank drove the shares.

However, foreign investors sold a net 63 million rupees' worth of shares, data showed. They have been net sellers in 47 out of the 61 trading sessions so far this year, selling a net of 13.1 billion rupees' worth of shares.

The bourse is up 14.3 percent so far this year.

The market shot up 125 percent in 2009, coming off of a low base and spurred by the end of a 25-year war in May, which enticed foreign investors to cash in shares. Foreign investors had been net buyers since 2001.

The day's turnover was 1.24 billion rupees ($10.9 million), slightly below this year's daily average turnover of 1.51 billion rupees, but higher than 2009 average of 593.6 million rupees.

The rupee currency LKR= ended flat at more than a one-year high of 113.78/82 as a state bank protected it from further appreciation amid exporter dollar conversions ahead of the Sri Lankan New Year holiday season next week.

Sri Lanka celebrates its new year on April 13 and 14.

The interbank lending rate or call money rate CLIBOR, fell to 8.992 percent from Monday's 9.026 percent.

Former Tamil chief minister returns to Sri Lanka - after nine years

Irish Sun
April 07, 2010

The Tamil chief minister of Sri Lanka's northeastern province when Indian troops were deployed has returned to the country for the first time after nearly a decade - and a year after the military routed the Tamil Tigers who had repeatedly tried to kill him.

As Sri Lanka prepares for Thursday's nationwide election for a new 225-seat parliament, Annamali Varadaraja Perumal has addressed several meetings for his Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) in the Tamil heartland of Jaffna and in Trincomalee, from where he once presided over the province.

Thanks mainly to the decisive defeat in May 2009 of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Perumal admits he has been able to go into the interiors of Jaffna that had been out of bounds for him for two decades or so when the Tigers were alive and kicking.

Perumal, who was chief minister from 1988-1990, told IANS in a telephonic interview that his interactions with ordinary Tamils had convinced him that people had quietly but firmly buried the dreams of carving out an independent Tamil state out of Sri Lanka.

'Nobody I spoke to is bothered about concepts like separation or self-determination,' Perumal said. 'The topic is mainly about relief and rehabilitation. Yes, there is certain anger against the (Sri Lankan) government. People are sick and tired of all the violence they have seen for so many years.'

'I got to meet people who had been silent for 20 long years due to the LTTE politics of terror,' he went on. 'I addressed meetings of 30-40 people and even hundred people. I wasn't addressing election rallies per se. They were more of interactions with ordinary people.'

He said he was frequently asked about what India, whose shadow has always loomed large on Sri Lanka, proposed to do in the island nation where the defeat of the LTTE has majorly changed the political discourse.

On some days, Perumal said, his first public meeting would start at 9 a.m. and then go on until midnight.

Perumal flew into Colombo March 20 and made it to Jaffna the next day. After some days there he moved to Trincomalee on the east coast. He wants to call on Sri Lankan leaders before returning to India where he lives with his family.

Perumal, now 57, fled from his then seat of power in Trincomalee just before the Indian troops withdrew from Sri Lanka in March 1990 after suffering nearly 1,200 dead in a costly war against the LTTE in the north and east of the country.

He escaped from both the LTTE, which had then dubbed him a 'traitor', and a hostile Colombo, finally taking shelter in India where he was given protection by New Delhi after the Tamil Tigers vowed to kill him.

His last visit to Sri Lanka was in 2001, just a year before the LTTE and Colombo signed a Norway-brokered ceasefire agreement, whose collapse within years led to a war that in turn triggered the decimation of the Tigers.

In his early years in Jaffna, when Perumal was an unknown Tamil activist, he had provided a safe house to LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran. But as politics took the two men on different trajectories, they turned foes. Prabhakaran, who loved to settle scores, more than once tried to kill him but failed.

So, is Perumal planning to move back to Sri Lanka for good? He doesn't say yes but hints that might happen.

'When I left Sri Lanka, I was a B.A. graduate. After moving to India I did my Masters in Political Science. I am now about to finish Law. So when I return to Sri Lanka, I will have two more degrees.'

Didn't this Perumal declare independence? Isn't he an Indian lackey.

US may disinvite Karzai if he persists in criticizing the US.

OMG, Karzai threatens to join the Taliban!?

............
White House would consider canceling Karzai visit

news.Yahoo.com
April 06, 2010

WASHINGTON – In a new indication of strained relations, the White House said Tuesday it would consider canceling an upcoming visit by Afghan President Hamid Karzai if he continues to make troublesome remarks. Such a move would be a remarkable diplomatic slap likely to infuriate the mercurial leader.

Despite the public reproach, senior administration officials said the tough statement was really meant as a warning and a sign of Washington's continued unhappiness with the Afghan leader's comments. The officials, one of whom described it as "a shot across the bow," said canceling Karzai's invitation was not being seriously considered, at least not yet.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the administration's strategy, which they were not authorized to discuss publicly.

Karzai has infuriated the White House with accusations that the United Nations and the international community interfered in last year's fraud-tarnished presidential election in Afghanistan.

Karzai also threatened to join the Taliban insurgency if the U.S. continues pressuring him publicly to do more to end graft, cronyism and electoral fraud, more comments that stunned U.S. officials.

"We certainly would evaluate whatever continued or further remarks President Karzai makes, as to whether that's constructive to have such a meeting, sure," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters Tuesday. "Our position on this is that when the Afghan leaders take steps to improve governance and root out corruption, then the president will say kind words," Gibbs said. "When leaders need to hear stern language from this administration about the consequences of not acting, we'll do that as well."

White House officials said no cancellation was imminent. While irritated by Karzai, the U.S. military also wants closer cooperation ahead of a potentially decisive offensive this summer.

But just the fact that President Barack Obama's chief spokesman raised the possibility so bluntly and in such a public setting, very rare in the careful, nuanced world of diplo-speak, showed the depth of anger and frustration in Washington toward Karzai. Declining to schedule a meeting is one thing, as the White House seemed close to doing twice with Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu. But scotching one that is already on the calendar is another.

Karzai was due to meet with Obama at the White House on May 12.

Ananda-USA said...

Obama Admin Vs Karzai

.....continued...
Obama extended the long-sought invitation during his own visit to Kabul late last month after telling Karzai and his cabinet that he was pleased with progress on anti-corruption measures and the fight against insurgents. At the time he stressed more needed to be done in both areas.

Since then Karzai has grown more defiant, launching the scorching accusation about Western interference in his elections, which prompted a phone conversation with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday to smooth things over. After that came the threat to join the Taliban.

"I don't know why somebody continues to insinuate that there was some sort of foreign corruption when the very thing that he speaks of was looked into," Gibbs said of Karzai's accusation regarding election fraud. "So I can't begin to decide what reasoning he had for making those comments."

A delicate diplomatic dance also surrounded Netanyahu's visit to Obama two weeks ago. In a break with custom, reporters were not invited to see the two leaders shake hands and begin their talks, and neither side has provided a substantive account of the session. A rift over new Israeli housing planned in east Jerusalem has contributed to the deepest dispute between the U.S. and Israel in decades.

Meanwhile, the administration's point man for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, has canceled plans to visit the region later this week for medical reasons, his office said. Holbrooke informed his staff Tuesday that he may have some blocked arteries and will be getting treated in New York this week instead of making the trip.

Holbrooke was to have accompanied a number of other senior U.S. officials, including the top military commander for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Gen. David Petraeus, and USAID administrator Rajiv Shah, on the tour, which will still go ahead.

It will be the second high-level visit Holbrooke has not made to the region in recent weeks. Holbrooke's absence was noticed when he did not go with Obama when he made his surprise trip to Afghanistan last month.

Predicting Sri Lanka general election outcome

By Shenali Waduge
AsianTribune.com
April 08, 2010

While the winner of Sri Lanka’s General Election is a foregone conclusion, the task at hand is to predict the number of seats the ruling UPFA Government is likely to achieve.

The objective is clearly to win an outright clear majority to enable and facilitate decision making and as promised to reduce ministerial portfolios to a bare minimum.

Ironically, the man chosen and believed to be “the” person to challenge Mahinda Rajapakse in January’s Presidential Election as the “Common Candidate” three months later has only the JVP to support him.

Everyone seems to have deserted him except of course the press statements issued which hardly means anything. All those parties belonging to the Common Alliance are today vying for parliamentary elections separately…for those wise to have read the nature of the common alliance in January and voted according to their conscience, will realize the hypocrisy that prevails.

Today, members of the UNF are openly giving reasons as to why people should vote for the UNP instead of the Trophy? In just 3 months we see a total turnaround in what the members of UNF proclaimed. What is interesting to note is how supporters of the UNP who idolized Fonseka in January, have today forgotten that he is contesting alongside the JVP.

The golden question is – are they likely to vote for Fonseka instead of the UNP….this is the interesting feature of this general election. How far voters who supported Fonseka’s common candidature for the presidential election is likely to carry forward that loyalty during the general election by casting their vote for the General and the DNA/trophy or will they again prefer to attach themselves to the loosing UNF that is unlikely to see any better forecasts until they realign themselves with a proper leader.

In all probability the UNF supporters of January will be either wondering whether to stick to the traditional voting pattern, or believe that Fonseka can bring about a change despite his alliance with the JVP or even decide to back the UPFA by giving them the benefit of doubt in the promise to reduce cabinet portfolios. Some of the die-hard supporters are likely to refrain from voting altogether.

The dark side of the general elections is of course the “manape” war which created in-house conflicts as a result – even the UPFA teams have not been spared and despite strict presidential calls for “teamwork” there have been continued rifts & this may affect voting as well.

Ananda-USA said...

Predicting Sri Lanka general election outcome

......continued.....
What most of us hope is that most present ministers who have been mere figureheads and not sincerely carrying out their roles/tasks would be voted out and hopefully a fresh team of people will be included. Bringing in the old lot would again tighten the presidential cuffs into continuing the same portfolios enjoyed earlier with little justice done to the people and their needs.

In a post-war peace – the country needs action, planned action, continued action and consistent action. Now if the public sector see themselves as detached from this equation and feel that their salaries, pensions, remunerations matter more than their own productivity and ability and will to provide a better service to the public – they better put their socks up because the public service arguably deserves a good shake up and they need to understand that given that many of them are political appointees at least that appreciation should be translated to doing their job properly.

The ills in the education, health sector and even statutory organizations have created immeasurable problems as a result of political appointments. While understanding that political appointments are inevitable the recipients of such appointments are surely expected to at least in appreciation of the privilege given to them take pains to show how worthy he/she is of the position bestowed upon them. This will to a great extent nullify or reduce the common belief that all political appointees end up destroying the public administration system. However, until such time these political appointees realistically assess their performance and do something about it we are likely to see the education, health and other key areas diminish in their service levels to the public.

It is too early to predict who are likely to be top performers at the manape war but posters should not be taken as a key factor to decide. While the ruling government will be anxiously looking forward to an outright majority in parliament, most of us would also encourage the public to clearly make their decision known. Voting for splinter groups hardly helps in matters. Similarly, again the focus will be on how the Tamils will decide to cast their vote. Again we need to wonder whether Tamils will continue to desire to project themselves are being marginalized or desire to belong as Sri Lankan’s in a nation that must work towards building up what was lost.

The outcome of the presidential elections in January saw a very poor voter turnout by the Tamils in the North. There are several reasons that may explain this – Tamils were voting for the first time in many years, they may not have been interested in voting, they may have wanted to watch and see and then decide, we cannot rule out that some may still feel that their eggs should remain with the LTTE and this would explain if the TNA the mouthpiece of the LTTE are likely to secure considerable voter approval. Yet, the TNA too is divided & it would be interesting if the Tamils are able to judge & decide upon the vast development and changes that the ruling government has embarked upon & of course the efforts taken by the President to converse in Tamil.

A good proposition is to finally decide & ensure that no ethnic based political parties contest any election in Sri Lanka, or the public make up their minds not to give their vote to such parties – this would to a great extent reduce the manner politicians manage to fool the voters into building up a scenario that they are being purposely denied rights etc due to their ethnicity.

Predicting Sri Lanka general election outcome

.....continued 2 ....
With two major elections likely to be over in 2010 – we can look forward to better times provided of course that the country has a fixed policy internally and externally. A major disappointment is the manner in which we seem to have lost or with poor inactions likely to lose some age-old friends – if Pakistan comes to mind then the Government needs to immediately ensure that they do not forget all those nations that have remained close whatever the odds. It is again reiterated that Sri Lanka may have India as its closest neighbor but we cannot forget at all times that India may not necessarily be a friend and whatever action or inaction India promises in favor of Sri Lanka – it is certainly not without tags that is most likely not to benefit Sri Lanka but certainly serves India’s purpose Only. Therefore as a sovereign nation, all governments need to realize that we are not doormats to any foreign nation – including India.

Therefore, with a clear policy for how the country should progress with proper targets for each minister, firm directives to all public sector employees, incentives for the private sector as they largely contribute towards GDP growth, and a firm foreign policy that does not do summersaults for anyone’s benefit – Sri Lanka should certainly progress for the better and the people can realistically look forward to good times ahead. The obvious next challenge is eliminating corruption – but one word of thought - corruption exists everywhere – it is a global problem & not confined to third world or developing nations alone.

Let us await good times ahead for Sri Lanka.

Is a 2/3 majority possible?

One more Pundit (see below) says NO!

But, what do these PUNDITS really KNOW? They were TOTALLY OFF BASE in the Presidential Election.

They didn't factor into account the PARADIGM SHIFT in voter sentiment due to the heightened PATRIOTISM in Sri Lanka then, are not doing so NOW!

I say there is a STRONG POSSIBILITY that the UPFA will get a 2/3 majority.

Apey Ratna Deepayata, JAYAWEWA!

..............
The two thirds fantasy

Island.lk
March 28, 2010

As the big date nears, the question on everybody’s mind is whether the government will be able to get the two thirds majority they have been asking for. All this while, the conventional wisdom has been that it is impossible for any political party to get two thirds under a proportional representation system. Today however, with the opposition in total disarray and the government getting two thirds even at some of the provincial council elections that preceded the presidential elections, nobody is sure. At the last Uva PC elections, even the Badulla district which was traditionally a UNP stronghold, was won by the UPFA with two thirds of the votes cast. So most people are waiting with bated breath to see what would happen on April 8.

One thing that has to be taken note of is that no political party has got even 50% of the votes cast at any parliamentary election since the proportional representation system came into force with the sole exception of the parliamentary election of 1989 when the UNP got 50.7% . At all subsequent parliamentary elections, the winning party got less than 50% as follows.

1994 – PA 48.9%

2000 – PA 45%

2001- UNF 45%

2004 – UPFA 45%

Even though no political party has had any difficulty in getting over 50% of the votes cast at presidential elections, since the first presidential election in 1982, we see that getting over 50% has been a very rare event at parliamentary elections. If some party does succeed in getting just over 50% in parliament, they will get a very substantial majority in parliament. For less than 51% of the votes cast in 1989, the UNP ended up getting no less than 125 seats. At the parliamentary elections of 1989, the UNP won eighteen districts getting the bonus seats which accounts for the clear majority they got in parliament. (The UNP got the bonus seat in the Digamadulla district as well in 1989 by getting the highest number of votes even though their votes amounted to only 29% of the votes cast in that district.) This is another point that has to be taken note of.

In order to get two thirds of the seats in parliament one does not have to get 66% of the votes cast. Something substantially less than two thirds of the votes cast may get the government two thirds of the seats. Even though the proportional representation system is said to result in weak governments, this is not strictly true. The winning parties after 1994 tended not to have proper majorities in parliament only because no party was popular enough to be able to get 50% of the votes cast. Today, for the first time after 1989, a winning party stands a good chance of getting well over 50% of the votes cast at a parliamentary election.

The UPFA got nearly 58% of the total votes cast at the presidential elections. All these votes were received from districts that would vote with the UPFA and against the UNP. The UPFA does not have transient allies like the UNP. In the UNP’s case, all those Tamils and Muslims in the north and east who voted for their candidate at the presidential elections will not be voting for the UNP at the parliamentary elections. In the case of the UPFA however, the allies they had during the presidential elections are still with them. If a proportion of the UPFA vote does not go to the polls, it will be due to the usual reasons such as complacency, indifference or sloth following a resounding electoral victory and not because they have gone their own way politically.

MD you dont need 65% of the vote to get 150 seats.

In 1989 UNP got only 50.8% of the vote but secured 125 seats, my guess is with 55% of the vote you can get 150 seats.

I think this is achivable, as UPFA is feilding popular tamil parties for North and East and as other minoriy parties are in disarray. Most Tamil people will want to be with the winning side.

UPFA votes in MR winning districts might decrease but they will win North and east districts and probably Nuwara Eliya this time.

The two thirds fantasy

......continued 1......
What this means is that while the UNP may not get the percentage of votes that the common opposition candidate got at the presidential elections because the JVP and TNA will be going their separate ways, there is the possibility that the UPFA may get the same percentage or something close to what that they got at the presidential elections. Even if after all opposition forces together with the most formidable presidential candidate could get only 40% of the vote, these opposition forces contesting separately and against one another as well as against the government, may not necessarily do any better. If the disarray in the opposition takes its toll and opposition voters do not go to the polling booth at least in the same numbers as they did at the presidential election, there is the possibility that the UPFA may do even better than they did at the presidential elections percentage wise. In which event, they will come pretty close to that desired two thirds. As it is the government started the election campaign with over 125 seats. It’s the remaining 25 that is at issue.

This will not be by any means, a close fight as at past parliamentary elections. In 1994, even though the UNP lost, they got 44% of the vote as against 48% for the PA. In 2000 it was the same with the PA getting 45% and the UNP getting 40%. This time’s election will however be held in the wake of a major defeat for the opposition and will be one of the most lopsided elections ever held in this country. Even though the 1989 parliamentary election was also held in the wake of a defeat at the presidential elections of 1988, the gap between the two parties at the presidential elections, was not as great as at the 2010 presidential election. In 1989, the gap between President Premadasa and his challenger Sirima Bandaranaike was only around 279,000 votes.

Besides, in February 1989 the JVP insurrection was raging throughout the country and this levelled the playing field to a great extent between the government and the opposition. Today however, the gap between the joint opposition and the governing coalition is a whopping 1.8 million, and there is no armed insurrection to restrict the freedom of movement of the governing types. Even in terms of percentage points, the difference at the 2010 presidential elections is a colossal 18 as against just 6 in 1989.

Past experience shows that the gap between the winning and losing side increases when an election is held soon after a decisive preceding election. We saw this happening in 1989 when the difference between the UNP and the SLFP at the 1988 presidential elections was just 6 percentage points but at the parliamentary elections of 1989, this gap had widened to nearly 20 points. Again at the 1994 elections the four percentage point difference at the parliamentary elections of that year had increased to an unprecedented 27 points at the presidential elections the same year. This leaves open the question as to what extent the gap of 18 percentage points at the 2010 presidential elections is going to widen on April 8? It may not be wise to assume that the government’s percentage will remain static or will shrink, at the parliamentary election.

Saved by indifference

Even though the election campaign has now come to the last week or so, there’s no real heat generated. The visibility of the UNP is almost non-existent. The lack of a challenge has made the government’s campaign also quite lacklustre. Perhaps this is just as well, because a heated campaign would have made the government throw everything it has against the opposition and one of the weapons they would definitely have used would be the TNA’s manifesto. The election manifesto put out by the TNA would have been the last nail in the coffin for the UNP if that had become one of the main points of contention in this election campaign.

Ananda-USA said...

The two thirds fantasy

......continued 2.....

In this latest manifesto, the TNA has called for a separate state not directly but indirectly. They speak of an independent Tamil Kingdom in the north before the arrival of the Portuguese. They speak of ‘lost sovereignty’, of a Tamil ‘nation’ and their right to self determination. They have in addition called for the re-merger of the northern and eastern provinces and their stated objective after the parliamentary election is to use the mandate they get to enter into a dialogue with the government to ‘restructure the system of governance’ in this country so as to recognise the ‘sovereign rights’ of the Tamil people. What is this but separatism in a sheepskin?

Given the fact that the TNA was a major partner of the joint opposition that supported Sarath Fonseka, the UNP, the JVP and Sarath Fonseka himself has a lot to answer for. The first question would be whether they did not have even a basic understanding about political positions and policies before they entered into a programme of joint action with the TNA? Did the TNA support Fonseka because he had agreed to ‘restructure the system of governance’ so as to recognise the ‘sovereign rights’ of the Tamil people? Would the TNA have supported a candidate who opposed their agenda? Even though it is now quite a while since the TNA released their manifesto, Sarath Fonseka has not disowned it and the UNP and the JVP too has not said anything about it. Had this been a ‘normal’ parliamentary election, the TNA issue would have been one of the main talking points and the UNP and JVP would not have been able to duck the issue and keep quiet as they are doing now. As it is, because nobody seems to be interested in the election campaign, the UNP and the JVP have been able to get away with something that would in normal circumstances have proved fatal.

Even if this matter does not come up the way it should at this election, the UNP especially, will have to make a decision whether it is going to continue with the policy they have had up to now vis-a-vis the Tamil question. When the UNP speaks of ‘joining hands’ with ‘our Tamil and Muslim brethren’ (as they have in their parliamentary election manifesto) what that translates into in practice is joining hands with organisations like the TNA and SLMC. The UNP’s attempt has been to get the Tamil vote by being friendly with the TNA and this strategy has been successful. But the TNA cares not a twit for the embarrassment caused to the UNP among Sinhala voters by the stands it takes. Unlike the SLMC, and the likes of Mano Ganesan, the TNA does not aspire to form a government with the UNP, so they don’t care about the embarrassment they may be causing the latter.

However the UNP, in its fear of antagonising the Tamil vote does not do or say anything that may even be slightly embarrassing to the TNA. The UNP needs (or thinks it needs) the TNA, but the TNA does not need the UNP. Such a lopsided relationship can’t possibly be of any benefit to any national political party. One would think that the sooner such a link is severed the better. This parliamentary election would have been an ideal opportunity for the UNP to jettison its relationship with the TNA by rejecting the latter’s manifesto in a public statement. What their failure to do so will mean is that for the next six years after this parliamentary election as well, the UNP will continue to be seen as a force friendly to the TNA which in turn will continue to be identified with the separatist cause. So for the UNP there’ll be a tunnel, but no light at the end of it.

Ananda aiya and Moshe,

My prediction is 140+/- 2 with UPFA getting 60%(122+ 18 bonus)..MR got 58% and It's likely that slightly more UNPers will stay home than SLFPers..The final outcome is influenced by a few factors..

1. Voter turnout in N & E..

UPFA victory in TCO will depend on tamil (TNA) turnout at the election..The Ferial-Sarath Weera rivalry in Ampara may cost the UPFA the district (let's hope not)..Voter turnout in the Jaffna, Vanni and Batti will determine if UPFA gets more than one seat each in those three districts

2. The percentage of votes DNA gets

You need 5% to be in the reckoning for a seat (however 5% does not guarantee a seat apart from Colombo and Gampaha)..The percentage of parties getting less than 5% will be removed from the final seat allocation..

For instance if
UPFA- 60%
UNP-35%
DNA-5%

Seats will be allocated according to that percentage..

However if DNA gets 4% with UNP getting 36%..The seats will be allocated UPFA gets 62.5% of seats whilst UNP 37.5%..

Since DNA votes this election will be exclusively from votes for Fonny in January, The more votes the DNA gets (without getting a seat in the district) the better.

---------

Ananda you need 150 seats for 2/3, but UNP got 125 seats in 1989 with 50.8% of the vote

Moshe Dyan said...

150 seats is mathematically impossible.

my total % comes to 55%.

it still gives 125 seats. premadasa got 53% and won 125 seats. but then there was no third party. their seats get allocated first. so even 55% gets only 125 + 2/3 seats.

let alone a 2/3rd majority, it will be difficult even to hold a simple majority!!!

out of 125 seats, 10 seats are for CWC, UPF. that leaves only 115 seats in a crisis situ. 2 seats for speaker and deputy speaker and we are back to 113 seats - a simple majority!!!

2 jokers cross the floor in that situ and govt falls.

in 1994 govt had only 113 with SLMC and UPF. but EPDP had 9. on top of that CWC crossed with 6 seats. total reached 113+9+6 = 128.

plus a few UNPers.

by having other parties within, there are few MPs to cross over. waste votes for the party on those cross over who are likely to cross back home, govt will land in shitt.

knowing the likelihood of cross over UNP will get HARDCORE ARSE-LICKERS elected. they would not cross easily.

Wests “democratic experiments” fail in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not only is West held responsible for violence and election malpractices (unsurprisingly they caused them) because in Afghanistan they wanted to keep their puppet (Karzai) in power (but now regrets this move with him making friends in Iran and China) and in Iraq they want to get rid of Malaki because he is pro-Iranian. That is why Iraq election results are taking so long and are being hidden –i.e. manipulated by the West to get a new lackey. Problem is new lackey cannot be 100% trusted. Haha.

Suddha’s democracy in action (of course democracy & "fighting terrorism" was not the reason for bombing those countries to the stone age, they wanted to control the oil, heroin and supply lines of these resources).

but it is not likely in COL, HAM, GAM, GAL, KUR, etc. JVP WILL get a few seats.

diya,

apply INDIVIDUAL DISTRICT percentages and see how many seats you get so that the overall percentage is what you expect.

an overall % of 60% is too high, me thinks.

TNA, etc, - 5%
crap parties - 2%
JVP - 5%
UNP hardcore - 33%
remaining - 55%

if more UNP and JVP voters can be kept at home that would be lovely.

but from ppl's experience, UNP voters EMERGE from freaking nowhere at a general election!!!

Remember UPFA swept eastern and central provincial concil electiuons.

I cant see any reason for the dynamics to change?

Can you gusy think about anything?

And also remember the % requrements are also different.

For provincial concil elections if a party gets 5% they get allocated a seat and the rest gets divded proportionaly amoung the majority parties.

For parlimentary elections the minimum % to secure a seat is higher I cant remember how much may be 10%.

Then the whole story is different from provincial concils.

Its hard to get a good math on this.

Moshe,

With your predicted percentages for TCO and Ampara UPFA will win with 2 and 4 seats respectively..Plus I expect one more seat each in Kaluthara, Moneragala, Jaffna, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa (with slightly higher percentages than you predicted)..Also I expect the UPFA to win Kandy and hence get two more seats there..Agree with your estimation on National list seats..

So that would give UPFA 137...

Of these only 5-6 will be CWC (not 10 as you predicted)..SO UPFA will have a comfprtable majority..

Realization Dawning in India that Preaching Tolerance and Placating Terrorists Yielded has a Strenthened Insurgency, just like in Sri Lanka.

"We are paying the price for the neglect of the last 10-12 years," says Chidambaram!

Why not DEVOLVE MORE POWER to the Maoists, my dear Chidambaram?

.................

India says it has no plans to deploy troops to fight Maoists, a day after rebels killed 76 paramilitary police.

Home Minister P Chidambaram said central paramilitary and state police forces could deal with the threat, but did not rule out using the air force.

Mr Chidambaram urged calm and patience on a visit to central Chhattisgarh state, where the attacks took place.

Correspondents say it is the worst attack on security forces by the rebels since their revolt began.

"To our offer of talks, they have replied by savage andbrutal acts of violence" P Chidambaram, Indian Home Minister

An air force transport aircraft has been sent to Chhattisgarh to bring back the bodies of the soldiers killed in the attacks.

State police said the death toll had risen to 76 with the death of another member of the security forces.

Thousands of people have died during the 20-year fight for communist rule.

The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of the rural poor who they say have been neglected by governments for decades.

'Long struggle'

Mr Chidambaram laid a wreath near coffins of security force personnel and promised that the offensive against the Maoists would continue.

Indian Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram, right, and Chhattisgarh state Chief Minsiter Raman Singh, left, visit a government soldier who was injured in Tuesday"s Maoist attack at a hospital in Raipur, India, Wednesday, April 7, 2010.
Mr Chidambaram (right) visited injured troops in hospital

"We must remain calm and hold our nerves to rid India of this threat," he said after meeting relatives of some of the dead soldiers.

"You cannot expect instant success. This is a long, drawn-out struggle. It will take two to three years, perhaps more [to defeat the rebels]."

He said the Maoists presented the "gravest threat to internal security".

"We are paying the price for the neglect of the last 10-12 years," the home minister said. During that time the Maoist movement has grown in strength in large rural areas in eastern and central India.

But he said they would not be allowed to succeed in their long-term aim of overthrowing the government.

India's main opposition party, the BJP, has said there should now be an all-out offensive against the rebels and the media are full of talk of war against the insurgency.

The BBC's Chris Morris in Delhi says the government has always insisted this is not just a security issue.

Our correspondent says it bitterly condemns Maoist violence, but it acknowledges that chronic poverty, and lack of opportunity and development, are significant factors which have given the insurgency added impetus.

'Totally outnumbered'

Police said the paramilitary troops on patrol in remote jungle in Dantewada district were ambushed by hundreds of heavily-armed insurgents

Ananda-USA said...

India says it has no plans to deploy troops to fight Maoists, a day after rebels killed 76 paramilitary police.

.....continued....
Rescue teams were then ambushed in attacks using landmines and gunfire.

An armoured vehicle was first bombed before rebels on a hillock opened fire, police said.

As security personnel took cover, they found the rebels had booby trapped trees with explosives. Troops in the open were gunned down by the rebels.

"We were totally outnumbered. And they [the rebels] had far too much ammunition," Pramod Kumar, one of seven soldiers who survived the ambush, told The Times of India newspaper.

"How could just 80 of us fight more than 1,000 of them? We got no time and no opportunity to retaliate."

The Maoists have stepped up attacks in recent weeks in response to a big government offensive along what is known as the "red corridor", a broad swathe of territory in rural eastern and central India where the Maoist rebellion has been gathering strength.

Nearly 50,000 federal paramilitary troops and tens of thousands of policemen are taking part in the operation in several states.

Mr Chidambaram has said troops will intensify the offensive if the rebels do not renounce violence and enter peace talks.

The rebels want four senior leaders freed from jail and the offensive halted before any talks.

Pol Sambol,

Here is another article on the Navy bases being established along the coast of Sri Lanka.

You asked for my views.

I think it is ESSENTIAL FOR SRI LANKA's SECURITY to do this. In fact, the large distances between the main bases should be covered by smaller bases located within sight of each other to provide overlapping coverage without gaps.

The families of the personnel manning these Navy bases should be settled near the bases as well, to give permanence to the bases with a civilian support base.

In the longer term, a network of bases of all four military arms of the security forces should be established throughout the country and integrated into a numerically much larger universal National Guard comprising all adults, including both men and women, who are able to bear arms.

Furthermore, such a network of military bases would go a long way towards initiating the program of Ethnic Integration within the country designed to inculcate patriotism in the people with service in the armed forces as a driving force, and by altering the demographics of the country towards the average, destroy the very basis of the demand for ethnic homelands based on regional ethnic majorities.

Even as we speak, Eelamists are plotting ways and means, through the ballot if not the bullet, of ressurecting the "separate Tamil homeland" concept. This will go a long way towards FRUSTRATING that goal.

................
Navy establishes cantonment camp at Mollikulam

The Sri Lanka Navy initiated establishing a cantonment camp at the Mollikulam coastal area to ensure national security of the country while strengthening security in the Wilpattu National Park, said Navy Spokesman Captain Athula Senarath.

Stating that the construction was initiated in consultation with the Wild Life Department, Captain Senarath told the Daily News that this was the first step of establishing number of satellite camps along the coastal belt from Karuwalakuda to Pukkulam a 29 km extension in the Wilpattu National Park area.

He said since there was no mechanism to ensure security in the Wilpattu coastal area, earlier the LTTEers used these areas for their activities, drug kingpins used these areas to import their goods and poachers used to come in Wilpattu from these areas to cut down trees and for hunting. Still it was a threat to national security to keep these areas open for legal activities without a proper mechanism to monitor them. "The establishment of these camps will prevent these illegal activities as well as prevent re-emergence of terrorism," Captain Senarath said.

He said there would satellite camps be constructed from northwards and southwards in the coastal belt from Karuwalakuda to Pukkulam. He said a road is constructed along the coastal line from Karuwalakuda to Pukkulam as a supply route to these satellite camps.

Captain Senarath stated the Wilpattu National Park was liberated from the grip of the LTTE in 2006 by the SL Army and it was taken over by the SL Navy in 2007 September. Later on the SL Navy cleared the Old Mannar Road, B 379 which ran through the Wilpattu National Park as a supply route. The public are also allowed to use the road.

Now this Sajith chap's got a head on his shoulders. Unlike that buggering sodomite Ranil W, his criticism of the President does not cross the line into outright lies. This fellow needs to kick out the buggering sodomite and take over the UNP. It's about time we had a responsible opposition.

Cheers!

Diyasena,

My concern of MR getting seats from Norh and East is can he hold onto them (not now but later)? The Tamilia who come on UPFA ticket from N&E are more likely to crossover in the future or place idiotic demands wth the threats of crossing over. Well the potential for this exists.

Only large random sample opinion polls come closer to the real result of an election then still it is with in margin of error. Still there is 5% probability that the true result lies out side the predicted result. This may favour the Opposition or the Government. So looking at the random sample opinion polls one may say that there is a possibility of outright 2/3 majority and also a possibility of much less than 2/3 majority.

Many people voted SF last time thinking that he was going to win and real positive change would occur. Some of these people might have come to realisation what a mirage they were chasing. The rumour mill this time has been ineffective. Many changes occurred to shift the peoples' perception in favour of the Government. (Apart from Manape Pora). Much has been exposed about SF and UNP. So there is a possibility that many UNP ers and JVPers would vote for the Government or stay at home. There is a possibility(merely a possibility) that the Government will increase its vote share.

So my belief is that the Government is most probably come closer to 2/3.

With regard to devolution of power the Government getting 2/3 does not make any difference. For such a program UNP will jump in and provide the necessary back up.

I do not see the fault of Manape as the fault of the system. It is the mindset up of the voter and the candidates and the leaders. This may apply to the Road rules. It is not the road rules what matters and it is the road users what matters. Then we may argue that develop the mindset up of the road users and remove the road rules. We know that is not going to work.

However, the colossal expenses that the candidates have to go through is a genuine stimulus for corruption. The expenses must be limited in the case that this sytem to be continued.

The best advantage of the Government getting 2/3 is that it will remove the excuse they have. One thing which is almost certain is MR would not become a despot or betray the Nation even though there is still the possibility of corruption being continued.

If MR got 2/3 and still corruption continues unabated and law and order situation does not improve that will naturally determine the place of MR in the History.

Centre should assist states: Biman

April 07, 2010
ExpressBuzz.com

KOLKATA: It was the responsibility of the Centre to assist states to tackle Maoists, the CPI(M) said today and criticised P Chidambaram for his remarks about West Bengal government, saying the Union Home Minister should "discharge his own duty and then speak about others".

"In a federal structure, the central government has a responsibility towards states and when the Maoist menace is growing alarmingly, the Centre should assist the states to effectively tackle the problem," CPI(M) politburo member Biman Bose said today.

"Instead of finding fault with state governments, like blaming the West Bengal government during his last visit, he (P Chidambaram) should discharge his own duty and then speak about others. I would ask him to oil his own machine," Bose, who is also the CPI(M) state secretary, said.

Criticising Chidambaram for his 'adverse comments' on the state government's responsibility, Bose said, "he should not have made such remarks."

To a question, the CPI(M) leader said that there was no need to deploy army to curb Maoists as central forces with the help of state police could do it.

Bose was also critical of Chidambaram remaining 'silent' about UPA government's ally Trinamool Congress not cooperating with the state government in tackling the Maoist menace.

Bose alleged that Chidambaram did not utter a single word against Trinamool Congress 'considering problems in the alliance'.

"Instead of asking the Trinamool Congress to cooperate with the state government in countering the Maoist problems, Chidambaram preferred to pass critical comments against the state government.

"What he should have said, he has not said and what he should not have said, he has said," Bose claimed.

I agree with most of your post, except the above statement.

The UNP leadership will not change: their sole objective is to defeat the UPFA and replace them at the helm of Govt. Nothing else matters.

What is good for the country, is not good for the UNP, if the governing party is the UPFA .. because the UPFA will get the credit for it, and that will extend their hold on power.

Do you remember the antics of the UNP when during CBK's SLFP Govt? The country was on the brink of being partitioned, exploding bombs were killing thousands of people, but the two parties could never form a Unity Govt to save the nation; they were too busy destroying each other.

No, the UNP will never cooperate with the UPFA, even if it is in the National Interest.

This situation is similar in the US. In case of the Healthcare plan that was just passed by the Democrats in the US Congress, the Republicans unanimously opposed it. It did not matter that this was good thing for ALL Americans citizens, especially 1/3 of American who had no health insurance plan at all, and would provide an essential benefit just like the Social Security.

Yet, when Social Security was passed decades ago drung Lyndon Johnson's presidency, the Republicans opposed it tooth and nail .. on a party line vote.

Unfortunately, acquiring power by defeating the "enemy" is what drives most politicians .. the nation comes much, much.. much later. There is just too much money at stake and too much ego in the way.

What we need to do to clean up UNP is to get the Colombians and Kandyans out of UNP (Here I am generalizing but they are the skunks of our nation). If we some how give leadership to people coming from other cities, this would dramatically change. UPFA would never would have been the same if it was not run by some one from the South.
As KB said, the ability to mingle with the common people is not a trait in the Colombian, Kandian people who most of the time are lackies of Suddhas.

agree with this.

this is what will happen bcos the UNP is under pressure from the IC to support ANY devolution.

so UPFA can pass devolution laws with 2/3rds anytime without having 2/3rds.

also other similar crap.

e.g. remove all ethical, legal, moral hindrances to religious conversions

e.g. legalise homosexuality/marriage

e.g. increase MPs powers, privileges, etc.

the oppositte is also true. IF UNP wants to get into the good books of the ppl, they can bring generally patriotic bills themselves and UPFA sections will support them.

Thanks Ananda:

If MR proposes devolution of power (That I disagree with strongly. The Elam War 4 has established, without any doubt, how vulnerable Sri Lanka is. For this reason, as I stand firmly on equal rights to all people on the principle of One Nation, One people and Single Country, I am now dead against Federal System or power devolution.

Elam War 4 has also convinced me that it is necessary North and East are developed rapidly to represent new Sri Lanka of -One Nation- One people- Single Country- NO home lands- No traditional lands All are ours and theirs. in fact, there are no us and them. All are us.

If we do not do this Tamil Nadu, when they have a big say, will make sure that Elam will happen but if ethnic composition does not favour this Tamil homeland nonsense, they will loose interest.

As you say, for any thing good for the Nation, the current UNP will oppose it even if this opposition guarantees their own destruction.

Similarly if MR to proposes something destructive to our Nation, no doubt UNP will help. That is what I meant.

If MR government to go for a Federal solution or power devolution of unnecessary level then UNP will support MR because it seems that this the agnenda of the current UNP. That is what I am saying MR does not want 2/3 to the wrong thing by the Nation UNP will be happy to support. For instance by Ranil's own words he has demanded War to be stopped as soon as Mulativ was won. So for that MR does not need 2/3. But to do the right thing by the Nation MR needs 2/3 that is why I favour this even though I have no absolute certainty.

My impression is that we should not fear 2/3 just because we think that will embolden the Government to do the wrong thins with respect to North and East. So I think best bet for the Nation is MR to get 2/3 and then we can hold MR responsible if he does not deliver.

By looking at MR's mindset I think even though it is likely some corruption to continue he will do his best to deliver and he has already done a great deal.

So, even though nothing is certain that MR will do the right thing I wish that MR will get the 2/3. Since in all probabilities (not in all certainty) that could be the best thing for the Nation. Even if it is not no serious damage could happen.

we have to appreciate that IF ranil abandons colombans, UNP may collapse. and colombans also collapse politically!!!

so this ranil-colomban fix is not going to break. what needs to happen if the UNP is to have a better future, is for UNP to manage the steady colomban base while increasing the grassroots support.

don't forget colombans are not only about SUDDA. in fact some colombans don't like sudda (they prefer tamil elamists even when sudda doesn't like them).

there is another things about it. as development spreads, it increases colombans. this has to be managed. development must be mostly chanelled to ppl who value SL traditions, customs, values, etc. blind development won't work. it's the indian/chinese model of capitalism. certainly not the mexican, eastern european model!!!

[The fault lies with the government for allowing the bullet to take power in the tamil regions all these years.]

I absolutely agree with this observation.

Successive Sri Lankan Govts failed to protect the avarage Tamil citizen from domination and enslavement by armed groups. The primary responsibility of a government is to protect the lives and freedoms of ALL of its people, and it failed in that duty for 30 long years.

In that failure lies the fount of ALL of Sri Lanka’s agony.

The blame for that must be shared between the majority Sinhala community who failed to act fast enough, valuing the lives of their fellow Tamil citizens, and the Tamil people who allowed their ethnic pride to be hijacked by monsters promising them a monoethnic Valhalla.

This is why I am saddened by the support I see here for the resurrection of “Tamil Nationalism,” it is a prescription for continuing the disaster that has befallen the non only the Tamil people, but also the Sinhalese.

Instead of “Tamil Nationalism.” espousing a separate existence for the Tamil Community, we should be moving towards a “Sri Lankan Nationalism” that encompasses and integrates all people of Sri Lanka into ONE NATION of ONE PEOPLE with a COMMON SHARED DESTINY with EQUAL RIGHTS to every citizen and an EQUAL RESPONSIBILITY to love, defend and foster this Resplendent Island that is our shared wealth, our shared heritage.

Anyone who denies that the lives of Thondaman’s Upcountry Tamil community has improved knows nothing about Sri Lanka.

Their lives have improved immeasurably over the last 30 years, compared to the lives of Tamils of the North and East left subject to the tender mercies of the LTTE. This is despite the vast treasury of ill gotten gains of the LTTE, and the free food, other essentials, and salaries paid to govt employees, by their enemy the Govt of Sri Lanka and ultimately the Sri Lankan taxpayer.

Where did all those funds channeled into LTTE coffers go? That is a question that the Tamil people in Sri Lanka should be asking themselves.

The LTTE agents of the Tamil Diaspora should be hunted down and compelled to refund the remaining balance to fund rehabilitation of the North and East, and pay compensation to those whose lives were destroyed by them.

[With no change in mindset & attitude in both community even after 100 years it is not possible for the minority to lead the country.]

I don’t think the “minority will lead the country” ever as a whole, but I have no doubt that members of the Tamil minority will be among the top leaders, including the president, of the country, in the future, as they have been in the past, and are at present.

Did ANYONE imagine that Barack Obama would be the US President today? Yet there he is .. and the majority of the people who voted for him were white! That happened because he EARNED their trust. by rejecting the communal Black-community politics of previous Black leaders, and speaking to the minds of people of all communities irrespective of ethnicity, allaying their deeply ingrained fears.

This is in a country that embedded the “inalienable right of all men to life, liberty and happiness” in the Declaration of Independence, then refused to recognize the Negro as a “man” entitled to those rights guaranteed therein to all men, continued the institution of slavery for another 100 years, then fought a civil war partly to emancipate the slaves, then denied them the exercise of equal rights guaranteed by the emancipation proclamation for another 100 years until these inequities were finally dismantled during the Civil Rights period of the 1960s. No Tamil in Sri Lanka has ever been subjected to inequities the like of which the American Negro has suffered … not even close!

In the same way that whites voted for Obama, someday Sinhala people will vote for Tamil leaders irrespective of ethnicity, despite the fears aroused by the Eelam struggle, but only if Tamils abandon the Communal Politics of the past that threatened the integrity of the nation. I know that this is possible having lived in Sri Lanka, and honored and supported Tamils in many aspects of life, because they were the best qualified for the role, and had earned my respect and support.

Unlike in the US, where it has taken over 400 years, a day will dawn quite early in Sri Lanka when the fears and biases aroused by the Eelam war will subside, and Tamils as a people will again earn the trust of the majority Sinhalese. Tamils and Sinhalese have to work towards that day; but it will not happen if Tamils persist in communal politics of the past and the present.

Is there ONE Tamil party that does not have the word “Tamil”, or “Liberation” in its name, signifying aspirations and existence separate from the majority of the people of Sri Lanka? I don’t know of any. It is about time ALL such communal parties, including the Sinhala JHU and the Muslim SLMC, were banned as not conducive to communal harmony of our country.

We need to learn to live together in harmony as ONE PEOPLE in ONE NATION sharing ONE DESTINY. Demanding special privileges on the basis of one’s ethnicity, religion or language is not the way to attain that goal.

In other words, DBS has demonstrated clearly that Tamils politics is ALSO the last refuge of scoundrels. Except for Mavai Senathi, who is a scoundrel from the very beginning? Mavai had not done anything in life other than Tamil politics and if not for politics, even now he cannot do anything else in life.

The real exception is Anandasagaree. Hats off. I wish him well. What a courage to stand up single handedly against the LTTE.

A political and/or an election defeat must end the political career of any sensible and respectable person. But in Sri Lankan politics, the failures are the pillars of political success. If people reject you in poll, find a way through the national list because it was the same people who polled to create that seat. In other words, if you are defeated, you become a technocrat overnight to fill the national list.

Few comments, before I embark on my view on the future of Tamils, especially for the eastern Tamils.

Knowing Kingsley Rasanaygam well I do not agree that he was ever a Tamil nationalist. Hailing from Kallar, he had strong leaning to LTTE and showed his due loyalty and caste solidarity to the LTTE. Secondly, from Batticaloa he moved to Vanni to help the LTTE to form its Eelam Bank and returned with some money to buy some lands in Batti and finally got killed in the same land which he bought with the LTTE [or people’s] money.

If Raviraj had lauded Sangaree privately for criticizing Anton Bala, then the LTTE is also on the killer’s list of Raviraj.

Sathasivam Kanagaratnam and Sivanathan Kishore are thick as thieves from day one. Sathasivam Kanagaratnam also known as Anna Coffee Van Kanaku is the brother of Sellakili who was killed in July 1983. If Kanaku, Kishore, Sivajilingam can become legislatures of Tamils, the seats once held by GG, SJV, Thiruchelvam, Neelan, Kadirgamar etc., it is the worst curse this community can continue to have.

It is my understanding that MPs are legislatures. They legislate law and nothing else. The other parts of the government such as executive and judiciary will do their part in running the country and one shall not interfere into the other.

But our MPs do everything other than legislation for many reasons. They are not qualified to understand what legislation is. They do not have any language skills to legislate. They do not have the basic understanding of law making. All what they know is to interfere in the executive. They strongly believe that transferring and punishing, teachers, grama sevakas and civil servants who did not vote for them, is their primary duty. In this Tamil Nadu MPs are their Gurus.

But ignoring all these important duties and responsibilities, in the name of unity, Tamils vote en masse and send bunch of donkeys to Parliament who does nothing other than raising voice which no other non-Tamil MP can understand. The commentators above and DBS are telling the same to ‘re-gain a strong, unified voice again’. For what? Have they not raised a unified voice in the past? Is there anything new to tell to the majority community?

In 1977, we were unified and made history by forming the leading opposition party and for the first time in the history a Tamil became the leader of opposition. And since then, Tamils continuously occupied parliamentary seats in the opposition. What did the Tamils achieve?

Diyasena said...

Continued..

On the contrary, think about the period where Tamils occupied the government seats and what they gained. To mention a few, KKS cement factory, Paranthan chemicals, Valaichenai paper mills, Irakkamam tile factory, Ilmenite factory in the east and many more. In addition, the local development of Tamil areas took place only when a Tamil MP was in the govt. If there was any local development in Batticaloa, that took place only after Rajan Selvanayagam was elected as MP in 1977 and not during C Rajadurai’s 35 years of service with the Federal party. I think it was the same for Jaffna during Alfred Duraiyappas time. But I did not vote to Rajan Selvanayagam. As an emotional donkey, I voted to the Tamil unity without knowing what it is. Do I have to continue this forever?

The lesson we have learnt in the past is that nothing can be done in a democracy without sitting with the ruling party. Democracy means rule by the majority. Opposition is there only to monitor what the majority does and not to dictate the majority. So let us join the ruling party and do some work to our so called homeland. The only practical way to stop Sinhala colonization into Tamil areas [if that is a concern], to develop Tamil areas, to find a way to rehabilitate the ex militants who are in detention and for any other matter, is to take a seat in the cabinet and raise our voice there. No point in barking in the parliament.

Let us put behind our religion, language, caste, creed or whatever we allege to have behind the four corners of the walls of our houses and we shall come to the streets with one identity as Sri Lankans. Let us do this for another 50 years and see whether we will care for what we left behind the four walls. If we were willing to take the risk of destroying everything for the last 30 years in a violent manner, why we cannot do this in a democratic way.

Yes, I know we did this before 1971. But did we do a united way? No. The Tamil man who did the major development works in the north and the east was branded by Federal Party as a traitor and he was defeated in the elections. Tamil politicians undercut each other to gain power and they used the venom called ‘Tamil Nationalism’. This helped the Sinhalese to deny our rights and we suffered and continue to suffer.

To make the story short, I wish all the Tamils who contest in SLFP and UNP tickets win in the forthcoming elections. All the Tamils vote for a Tamil who contest under UNP and/or SLFP ticket. If those MPs can work with the government and can develop their respective areas that would be a yeoman service to the Tamil nation now.

If Tamils need a separate party, there shall be a new political party without the word ‘Tamil’ in the name of the party. It could have a Constitution such a way that the party leadership is held by the Tamils. That party shall contest all over Sri Lanka giving opportunity to other communities to contest. If there is a seat from national list, give that to a Sinhalese or to a Muslim. Let us teach them what Affirmative Action is. I know it is a long way but shorter than the wasted 30 years.

Again, stop this nonsense of ‘re-gaining a strong, unified voice again’. We have shouted and voiced enough. It did not work. So why it should work now or in the future. It is time to do something differently, constructively and intelligently. Let us not repeat the history, please.

More later!
