False and Naïve Expectations Can Ruin Hard Won Peace

Peace has dawned upon Sri Lanka. For the first time in 27 years Traditional New Year celebrations took place in an atmosphere of peace. First peaceful Independence Day, first peaceful Christmas and the first peaceful election were other firsts lately. Will peace last?

Answers depend on the sentiments in formerly war-torn areas. After the wipe out of the LTTE, violence is not a yardstick to measure the level of peace. But the voting pattern is. Has anything changed in the voting pattern of North-East Tamils in 2010? The answer is not much. Even the small change that has taken place cannot be attributed to a lasting and genuine factor. For instance armed paramilitary politico-military groups roam the streets of Jaffna District. Interestingly they only managed to win seats in the Jaffna District! It says a lot about the real reasons for their bettered performance. Displaced civilians cause another complexity. Only some displaced civilians were provided with facilities to vote. In another strange outcome, displaced civilians overwhelmingly voted for the government minister in charge of their welfare who was active in arranging them transport facilities on the election day!

These abnormalities clearly are exceptions than the norm of North-East voting pattern. If people were allowed to vote in an atmosphere of no IDPs and no armed paramilitaries, the result would have been different. In making long term assessments, these exceptions have to be taken out of the picture because IDPs will be soon resettled fully and armed paramilitary groups will eventually be forced to toe the line.

A clear, unbroken voting pattern

When these anomalies are taken out, a clear picture emerges that is the natural voting pattern of Tamils in the North-East ever since 1947. Unlike in other parts of the country, in North and the East, Tamil voters have always predominantly voted for racist political parties. This strange phenomenon is not unique to Tamils in Sri Lanka’s North and the East. It is also clearly visible in Tamil Nadu, India. Almost all other Indian states follow collective political ideologies.

e.g. secular nationalism, communism

However, racism seems to be the dominant political ideology of Tamil Nadu as it is in North and East Sri Lanka. Dravida Munethra Kazakham and All India Anna Dravida Munethra Kazakham are the dominant political parties of Tamil Nadu. Dravida is one big race that is made up of a number of Dravidian races including Tamil. North and East of Sri Lanka, and Tamil Nadu account for over 41 Tamil/Dravida political parties. Political ideology of these parties is Tamil/Dravida racism.

Since 1947, the following parties dominated Tamil politics of Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka in terms of voter numbers; All Ceylon Tamil Congress, Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi, Tamil United Liberation Front and Tamil National Alliance.

Tamil votes at the 2010 General Election in the North and the East

If what the UPFA scored island-wide is a landslide, Tamil racist parties have won a landslide among Tamil voters in the North and East. But unlike the UPFA, Tamil racist ideology always won in the North and the East. Tamil voters’ percentage is assumed to be same as ethnic distribution of the district. Votes for Tamil racist ideologies are votes received by Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK), Akila Ilankai Thamil Congress and Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal.

Trincomalee shows the highest percentage of 84% which is significant because the ITAK leader contested from the Trincomalee district. Jaffna and Vanni show low percentages because EPDP and aligned parties threw their weight around ably supported by their armed cadres. Voters’ turnout in these two election districts was low which helped this outcome.

National Security Implications

Political parties with racist or religious ideologies may they be Tamil, Sinhala or Muslim don’t go well with national security interests. Ethnic harmony and secularism are the best tools for maintaining national security. These parties not only stand in the way of ethnic harmony but openly preach racism and violence. ITAK has a long history of engaging in violence against ethnic Muslims and Sinhalas in the North and the East. Starting from 1949, ITAK carried out a number of apparently peaceful campaigns to win a separate state for Tamils including civil disobedience campaigns. However, due to the very racist nature of these campaigns they turned violent. 1958 riots broke out as a direct result of the highly racist and discriminatory “tar-brush campaign” of the ITAK where Sinhala letters were erased in all public places by applying tar on them which is a direct adaptation of the “tar-brush campaign” carried out by Tamil Nadu communalist politicians earlier against Hindi speaking people.

ITAK has again threatened civil disobedience campaigns unless their demands are granted.

It is wrong to call these “Gandhian ways” of peaceful protest. Unlike the ITAK, Gandhi never made racist demands. This type of action should be handled using force since it can arouse racial violence and is an insult to the good name Gandhi.

Communal political parties demand that security forces are withdrawn from the North East since the war has ended. If done, this can seriously jeopardize national security.

Fourth danger of communalist parties is that they act as secret promoters of separatism even when the LTTE has been wiped out. They, along with sections of the LTTE Diaspora can destabilize Sri Lanka and India. In the remote possibility of a referendum in the North East of Sri Lanka for separation, an overwhelming ‘yes’ vote would mean immense pressure on the island nation to honour their ‘democratic’ right.

However, racist political ideologies cannot be forcibly suppressed. This is especially so when Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka’s closest neighbour and the global defender of Tamil rights is heavily controlled by communal politics.

How to Face the Danger

The only democratic way to diffuse racism in politics is to ethnically integrate North East so as to make racist politics irrelevant. Success of it is seen from the election results of Trincomalee District. Although more than 80% Tamils voted for a communalist party, it lost thanks to large scale multi-ethnic settlement programs since Independence. Digamadulla is another example. Since the split from Batticaloa District, population diversity of the Digamadulla District has increased.

These proven peace building tactics should now be applied in the Northern Province.

Lousy political solutions without addressing the core issues of racism will create more trouble for the nation. Most suggested solutions will in fact empower racist political parties in a decentralized setting! That would be a total disaster regionally, nationally and internationally. This is the reason why the Northern Provincial Council has not been convened, almost a year after the war ended. A Provincial Council controlled by politicians with a racist ideology will pander into the highly active Tamil Elam campaign abroad.

Tamil Elamists should not be allowed to get peacefully what they couldn’t get in the battlefield. If danger to the nation is so grave that no other means would work, there should be no hesitation to use the military to sufficiently crush the rebellion. However, the smart thing to do is not to use the military at all. That can only be done with a process of mass ethnic integration in formerly war affected areas.

When should it start? Now. That’s because good times won’t last. While the time is right, maximum number of new multiethnic settlements has to be established in the North East.

Experimenting with untested solutions is equal to not having a solution at all. It is the noble duty of all peace loving Sri Lankans, not just patriots and nationalists, to compel the government to give a political solution based on multiethnic settlements in the North. This duty must be discharged for the sake of future generations to live in peaceful, multiethnic communities devoid of all chances of war, separation and racism. Peace loving people should not fall for crocodile tears of racist elements who will oppose multiethnic settlements in North East. Hidden behind these apparently meekly acts are the cruel intentions of racism. Anyone opposing any reasonable form of multiethnic settlements is a supporter of racism and should be treated as such. New laws are needed to punish those who don’t recognise the fundamental right of any Sri Lankan to live in any part of the island nation. And new laws should totally ban separatism and racist political parties that would divorce North East politics from Tamil Nadu politics. Adjusting the number of parliamentary seats based on new population figures is another requirement. Essential powers needed for counter-terrorism and counter-separatism now included in Emergency Regulations should be separately enacted with minimum hindrances to civilian life. Such laws should be operational by default without having to pass it in parliament month to month. Only other provisions of Emergency Regulations should remain needing parliamentary sanction monthly, if required to be implemented.

Moshe, sam,
Yes, this writer seems a high ranking officer. He is correct in many things, he wrote, if you go through deferent news feeds time to time during the war.

All the more reason it is something pieced together, well written no doubt but designed to attack and convey the message "soldiers being treated badly", and condition our minds into negativity against the Government over an issue like this which people care greatly about more than anything else. Soldiers welfare increased tremendously since GR became Defence Secretary and the issue "soldiers being treated badly" ceased to be the case, which was a big issue in CBK days. (Save for Gonseka who had no problem sacrificing as many men as he saw fit for his ego, e.g. Mumhalaia). Whatever else this Governments faults, it has treated the Military exemplarily and looked after the troops and their families like never before in our post-independent history. Have people forgotten all the media messages and manner in which respect for the Military was maintained throughout and beyond the war period, which was vital for the morale of the people and the Military. Compare it to CBK days or Ponnil where they had competitions in children drawing pictures attacking & insulting the troops and media adds showing disabled soldiers being shunned and insulted. All in the name of piss talks and a creating a sense of negativity to war.

Sites like Guardian are the same sites which spat on our soldiers, their families, the war and wanted the LTTE to win, including attacking our heroes with bogus war crimes crap to please suddha and fulfil his agenda.

It is like the BBC crying for our soldiers following Gonseka and his goons being arrested.

Never before they cared but only when it suited them.

It is propaganda on a disgusting level.

Re: How the LTTE was 'military' defeated: A Soldier’s view

PS

Spot on.

SP

"Without their contributions, for sure, GOSL would NEVER have defeated the LTTE."

Of course. There are so many such 'with out's. But can only with such single 'with out' we could win the war? War victory is an collective effort.

Forget about technical sort of stuff he wrote. The bottom line is

* People give credit for victory to politicos or some in AC rooms
* I.e. to MR/GR
* It is wrong
* Credit should go to soldiers
* ok now what? How many such soldiers? Are we going to appoint all of them as ministers or what? Give lot of money? or what?
* Obviously many heroic events and war heroes will not be heard due to their own safety and secrecy.
* So better to give credit to Gonseka
* Release him.

/He also thinks that the people are giving credit to politicians./

Yes he thinks so but he is wrong. People give credit and show respect to soldiers (as long as they are soldiers) not to politicos. However, after a soldier became a politician people selected better one.

I am not sure if this writer is talking about MR/GR or for that matter the top politicians who supported the military effort without blinking their eyes. I think that he is talking about some free loader who try to ride the fame not MR/GR.

However, the important point for the rest is that we need to make sure that these brave men and women do not anonymously go down in the history. Look at that memorial built by the people for Lt. Colonel Lalith Jayasingh in Avissawella. His name should not be limited to that memorial but we should include his name in the new golden chapters of Mahawansa. Same goes to Gamini Kularatne and Sgt Udawaththa and many other heroes who gave their lives. We need to memorialize Dahas, not Dasa, Maha Yodhayo of our time.

Pol,

I have the same opinion of scum at LG. Their intention is otherwise, not to address our soldiers. That Fu--er Nilanthata Illangamuwa deserves the traditional traitors punishment. He is a sahayaka jaathiye paahara balla.

sam, andare, pol,

on the limited subject of tamil officers in SLDFs............

hope you see why we didn't PUBLICLY decorated him. but we gave them plenty of financial rewards.

re: SLG

we all know SLG would NOT publish ANYTHING unless there is a "cut" for their anti-SL propoganda.

having said that, i agree to some extent that SOLDIERS gave not been given due credit.

politicians (including gonzeka) robbed it and made fun of it.

some soldiers are without a place to call home. some of their families are in poverty.

as i mentioned few years ago, there are some MOTHERFCKERS who search for war heroes' widows and go screwing them for money/promises of help. i know this very well. these SONS OF BITTCHES' families should be fcuked. all bcos of poverty.

making movies about their heroics achieves nothing IN THIS REGARD.

it is the gvot that is at fault not the ppl.

i have been trying to convince the top to give special education opportunities to SLDFs' family members WHICH THEY FCUKING HIGHLY DESERVE. they instead give it to former tigers!!!!!

I hope in few decades when kids in shcools read text books they will find the names of Maj. Lalith Jayasinghe, Cp. Gamini Kularathne, Lt.Col. Aladeniya, Col. Fasli Latheef, and some more among the names of Dutugamunu, Wijayabahu, Parakramabahu and Rajapakshe. Thats that part.

For war heroes yes thats not enough. Making movies, dramas, novels, poems, giving honors, titles should be done. These are all non-financial rewards.

Financial wise GSL need to make sure every one in war heroes family lives in own land, own house and kids getting higher education on some priority basis. Method should be there to ensure they get income as long as they live.

I hope GR has already taken care of this part and if not one should deal with MoD. I have little or no trust on some one who wrote to a site like SLG regarding this instead of dealing proper way.

Yes UPFA politicos did used war heroes and UNP/JVP are worried and jealous. May be UNP/JVP has decided to gain power they too need to follow UPFA way... So first step criticize GSL saying they don't treat war heroes well.. next step...

Guys,

Last Wednesday, the New York Stock Exchange suffered a near meltdown in minutes!

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped like a stone within a few minutes by about 1000 points, wiping $1 trillion dollars of stock value, and then recovered all but about 350 points. Nevertheless, nearly all investment gains for the current year have been wiped out .. OUCH!

The current uncertainty about the stability of the European financial markets, and the Euro, triggered by the woes of Greece and other weak European economies in waiting for loan defaults (Portugal, Spain, Italy etc etc) is compounding the global anxiety. The result was significant stock market declines in all major world economies.

Still, no one knows really HOW and WHY this happened!

Investigations are underway by the NYSE and the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). The NYSE and assorted brokerages are now examining the millions of sell orders one-by-one and have already cancelled about 5000 of them .. with 1 million to go.

One speculation is that someone made a mistake in submitting a sell order for billions of shares instead of millions of shares, and it was executed. Computerized programs of high-frequency sellers then immediately kicked in within seconds before any real humans could detect it, much less understand what was happening.

The market recovered most of the loss within a few minutes after the sell-off because those very same automated programs went bargain hunting under automatic control!

The much-vaunted computerized controls and safeguards of the US stock exchanges failed miserably to detect and respond in time to prevent the sell off. Many investors have lost billions and some company stocks were reduced to nearly zero!

To my paranoid mind, this could be the perfect CYBER-ATTACK of the century!

Could this really be a cyber-attack? Is there an evil Dr. Moriarty behind it all .. raking in billions .. or more diabolically .. destroying the established order of the world?

Alternatively, is this what will happen in the future if World War III breaks out, and nations will not only be destroyed physically by guns and bombs, but financially by cyber warfare as well?

Since humans need time to evaluate and understand things .. especially those of us still tied to the abacus .. should not delays of a day or two be introduced into financial transactions before they are executed?

I wonder whether ANYONE IN SRI LANKA is PAYING ATTENTION to these events as we GROW our own Stock Exchanges.

We dare not BLINDLY adopt technologies that have outstripped human ability either to understand them, or to control them.

How High-Frequency Trading Works

By Barbara Stcherbatcheff
Writer, CNBC
Friday, 7 May 2010

The cause of the Dow's dramatic intraday market slide of nearly 1,000 points Thursday is still under investigation.

There was initial speculation of human error. Now there is a focus on computerized trading.

The meltdown was electronic trading, not a "fat finger," New York Stock Exchange Euronext CEO Duncan Niederauer told CNBC Friday.

That left many unanswered questions about how computerized trading works.

High-Frequency Trading systems (HFTs) are computerized trading programs that make money two ways. They place bids to make small amounts of money from liquidity rebates provided by the exchanges, or they make tiny per-share profits.

While this is only dealing with fractions of cents per transaction, HFTs together execute trades on billions of shares a day, rendering it extremely profitable.

Supporters of high-frequency systems claim to add essential liquidity. But some critics claim that HFTs have increased the amount of volatility and instability in the markets.

A “group think” phenomenon occurs whenever there’s a major economic announcement, causing these systems to instantaneously place or pull thousands of bids and offers from the exchanges, not unlike a pool of fish frightened by a proximate shark.

This has the potential to confound other investors by issuing and then canceling orders almost simultaneously.

“HFTs add liquidity, but obviously they move extremely quickly. The main purpose of HFTs is to arbitrage between different venues, ensuring that the market is efficient as possible. The challenge is the speed,” Patrick Humphries, spokesman for the London Stock Exchange, said.

“It has lead to an atomization of order books. The average trade size now is £3,000 ($4,500). Ten years ago it was about £40,000,” Humphries said.

While most quantitative-driven programs would normally try and take advantage of market aberrations like Thursday's violent drop, it is murky whether program trades were more involved in driving the market down or helping push it back up.

Survival of the Fastest

Computerized trading may have started a kind of banking arms race, where survival of the fittest means survival of the fastest.

Proximity to the exchanges is also crucial for HFTs profitability.

In Germany, hedge funds and banks congregate as close as possible to the Eurex to get the edge, and in London, it’s the same.

"A number of the top banks, who I won’t name, will have servers located next to the (LSE) trading system," Humphries said.

But the sharp market fall yesterday may not have been aggravated by HFTs trading too much, but rather, not trading at all, he added.

"“They may have stopped trading – which could have compounded the issue."

Algorithm-based trading has also been accused of illegal front-running.

Front running is where a trader executes orders on a security for his own account ahead of similar pending orders from his or her customers.

High-frequency traders can use "flash trades" to read incoming order flow and use the speed of their systems to jump ahead of customer orders.

But if high-frequency traders are simply faster than everyone else and not illegally front-running, then this trading is no less legitimate than the use of the steam engine instead of a horse and buggy.

Computers, Not Human Error, Likely Caused Market Meltdown

CNBC
Friday May 7, 2010

Computerized sell programs triggered by global events-rather than trader error or "fat finger"-appear to have caused Thursday's unprecedented market swing, according market pros who are reconstructing the nearly 1,000-point stock selloff.

These experts think the intensely accelerated electronic trading was sparked by the Greek debt crisis and other events and not a trader who typed a "b" for billion instead of "m" for million in executing a trade on Thursday.

Friday's intensified selloff seemed only to confirm that investors are afraid of what lies ahead and are wary of the stock market.

"It wasn't a fat finger," said Dave Lutz, managing director of trading at Stifel Nicolaus in Baltimore. "The markets became unglued...Most of it was centered on the fact that currency markets affected the equity markets."

Not everyone is so sure. Authorities are probing the trading activity and looking to see whether a human mistake or manipulation was at play.

But Lutz said his firm was advising clients to sell Friday as evidence mounts of tightening in global credit markets. He considered the market behavior Thursday, though, as "a one-off event" as far as such a dramatic drop goes but warned that the times ahead will be rocky.

The movements of the Japanese yen were being closely tracked yesterday, as were the continued weakening of the euro as events unfolded in Greece. The strength of the US dollar-particularly against the yen-also caught attention as flight-to-safety trades increased.

While the exact origin of the selloff may not be known for weeks, the staggering selloff in the Dow came as Greeks stormed the streets in protest against the parliament's acquiescence to austerity demands from the European Union.

Market sources say the confluence of events likely triggered electronic selling programs. As that selling commenced, the human element of the markets quickly evaporated and computerized trading programs wantonly sold stocks at whatever price was available, creating a feeding frenzy.

"A lot of these (electronic trading) models become very sensitive when volatility is high," said Aaron Gurwitz, managing director of research, economics and strategy at Barclays Wealth in New York. "It's possible that a lot of these models got to a point where they got strong reduce-risk signals, that things are not working right."

"In that context," he continued, "even a small glitch, a slightly overweight finger rather than a fat finger, could have triggered a lot of the things that happened....A lot of very substantial traders become very sensitive. There's not that much difference among these models. We've seen this can be a source of potential systemic risk that really does need to be investigated."

More specifically, though, market experts saw the European debt crisis as a major trigger for the selloff. The EU's currency, according to views of hedge fund manager Dennis Gartman and others, is under threat of ultimately failing.

Computers, Not Human Error, Likely Caused Market Meltdown

.....continued...
Boris Schlossberg, of GFT Forex, also doubted trader error as the true root of the selloff and asserted that currency markets played a far greater role.

"The currency market was the leader in this whole calamity yesterday because yen is a critical risk-funding currency," Schlossberg said in a CNBC interview. "When it starts to collapse and when there is a lot of (algorithms) that are correlated to the Dow Jones, they started selling S&Ps."

Heads of both the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange reported Friday no significant discrepancies in trading activity and defended the operations of their exchanges.

Nasdaq CEO Robert Greifeld echoed sentiment that the market can tumble very quickly when intense fear sets in.

"It's equivalent to what happened back in the day with telephone markets where traders didn't answer the telephone to incoming orders. So we had a situation where the markets soar, the primary market is not responding and it has a disproportionate impact to the psyche of the market," he said in a CNBC interview.

Some traders were hoping to settle back in and put Thursday's events behind them.

"Euro-yen actually reached levels from Sept. 11," Leon Yohai, CEO of currency trading platform ZuluTrade said in an interview from Greece. "The crisis has passed but everybody knows that Europe is not as strong as it used to be."

The results of regulatory probes into Thursday events will be anxiously awaited.

"These guys (regulators) have to take a few weeks to look at this," said Yousef Abbasi, financial desk analyst at Execution Noble in New York. "People understand there was a glitch of some sort and we just have to move on."

Chaps, I had this article from Island-Defense section (April 5th, 2009) giving a nice summary of military operations in northern theater which wiped out the LTTE’s much touted "conventional fighting capability." Before we celebrate the victory day, let's remember how the victory was achieved.

Cheers!

How the war was won
Shamindra Ferdinando documents the history of the current phase of the military campaign that has boxed the LTTE to a small sliver of territory on the Mullaitivu coast.

Last Thursday’s bloody battle at Anandapuram on the eastern flank brought an end to organized LTTE resistance in the Puthukkudiyirippu area in the Mullaitivu district. The 58 Division troops had fought their way into heavily defended Anandapuram after 53 and 55 Divisions sealed off the area the previous day. The latest loss of territory would thwart any attempt on the part of the LTTE to hold off the army outside the civilian safety zone on the Mullaitivu coast.

By Thursday evening, the army collected bodies of 31 LTTE cadres along with 50 T-56 assault rifles, two rocket propeller grenade launchers, two multi purpose machine guns, one M-16 rifle, two radio communication sets, one GPS device, and one map. The army also recovered one armour plated truck and one speed boat.

The 53 Division and Task Force VIII Friday extended their forward positions into the remaining LTTE enclave in Puthukkudiyiruppu East. After day long clashes, the army recovered debris of 130 mm artillery piece recently destroyed in a Kfir strike along with one multi purpose machine gun (MPMG), one crew cab, two motorbikes, five T-56 assault rifles, and one radio communication set. Had one bothered to study the entire list of arms, ammunition and equipment seized from the LTTE, last week’s recoveries wouldn’t mean much.

But recovery of five vehicles including one bullet proof limousine used by LTTE leaders, including Prabhakaran, north-east of Puthukudirippu on Friday surprised defence circles. The army also came across an air-conditioned bungalow following a series of bloody confrontations in the Puthukudirippu and Analankulam areas. The bungalow and vehicles had been set ablaze before the LTTE retreated.

Had the army, navy, airforce and police failed in the drive against the Tigers, the Rajapaksa administration would have been in severe trouble as the economic crisis, waste and corruption would have taken centre stage.

Last week’s battle also wiped out the LTTE’s much touted ``conventional fighting capability.’’ When the Tigers overran the army at Elephant Pass in April 2000, interested parties including the media were quick to assert that the Tigers had acquired conventional fighting capacity. Although the then army Chief Lt. General Srilal Weerasooriya played down that defeat, the army never really recovered from that humiliation until Lt. General Sarath Fonseka took the army’s command from Lt. General Shantha Kottegoda shortly after the last presidential election in November 5, 2005.

The bloodiest phase of the Eelam war didn’t prompt Fonseka, undoubtedly Sri Lanka’s most successful army commander, to even consider withdrawing from the country’s UN-led force deployed in Haiti.

The FDL (forward defence line) concept would be obsolete once major operations come to an end. The FDL as in the case of Muhamalai was meant to thwart a conventional type assault using artillery pieces and mortars. The army changed its defence strategy to meet the threat posed by small groups of LTTE cadres who may operate for a few months before being wiped out. There would be significant changes in the deployment patterns, too, particularly in the case of the Jaffna peninsula. Before the liberation of Elephant Pass, the army maintained four Divisions including 53 and 55 which have moved to the Vanni.

To meet the LTTE challenge, the army rapidly bolstered its strength to 180,000 officers and men with the Light Infantry, Sinha, Gemunu, Gajaba, Vijayaba and the Sri Lanka National Guard absorbing most of the fresh recruits. The armour and artillery, too, received a tremendous boost with unprecedented increase in firepower. The army chief also created the Mechanised Infantry Brigade and Special Presidential Guard as part of the expansion. To facilitate the recruitment, the required qualifications to join the army were kept at the lowest possible level. Whatever their educational qualifications and family background, the rural youth showed what they could do given proper training, equipment and leadership.

The army also had to overcome the threat posed by infiltration by the LTTE and also a small group of officers and men on the terrorists’ payroll.

Unlike in the previous phases of the war, the government media didn’t go under LTTE-led propaganda onslaught. The armed forces, too, engaged in a successful media campaign with the army media, particularly its website playing a critical role.

After liberating Paranthan and Kilinochchi on the A9 in the first week of January this year, the army took less than 14 weeks to crush LTTE resistance east of the road. It is now on the verge of achieving an unparalleled victory over the LTTE trapped on the Mullaitivu coast having reached the seashore following a series of bloody battles in the Eastern and Northern provinces over the past two years. It is now poised to finish off the LTTE taking refuge among the civilians trapped in safety zone on the Mullaitivu coast.

With the area under its control now being reduced to less than 20 sq. km., the LTTE will not be able to resist the army in a conventional battle or pierce the security cordon around their last base.

The government went ahead with the offensive despite heavy international pressure. Interested parties repeatedly zeroed-in on Sri Lanka’s human rights record as part of their efforts to distract the government.

The reluctance to trigger a major battle in the midst of civilians trapped in the area is unlikely to give breathing space to the LTTE. Once the army punched a hole in LTTE defences, the civilians, estimated by the army to be around 60,000 would have the opportunity to escape. The LTTE, struggling to survive in the face of a massive build-up right around the safety zone is not likely to make an organized bid to retain its human shield. The LTTE resistance is expected to hopefully collapse before the forthcoming Sinhala and Hindu New Year.

When the LTTE triggered Eelam War IV in August, 2006 by directing its largest ever offensive at the strategic Trincomalee navy base and Kilali- Muhamalai-Nagarkovil frontline, it controlled approximately 15,000 sq. km. of territory.

Despite paying a heavy price, the army under Fonseka’s leadership has kept its offensive on track. Every time the LTTE and its supporters had felt that the offensive could be thwarted and lost territory regained, the army had sprung surprises.

With the battle in its final stage it would be pertinent to examine the army’s strategy which gradually evicted the LTTE from the East where it had several major bases with overland and sea access to its Vanni strongholds. In the midst of the heavy fighting in the East, the army launched its Vanni campaign, thereby forcing the LTTE to split its resources to resist the army on multiple fronts.

The LTTE launched its offensive with a multi pronged attack on army and navy bases in the Muttur and Trincomalee area in the first week of August 2006. Although the LTTE had initially overwhelmed the armed forces, the army quickly moved in additional forces into the theatre. By the end of the first week, the LTTE retreated, thereby paving the way for largest ever combined security forces campaign.

Had the LTTE been allowed to succeed at Muttur the outcome of the Eelam War IV would have been different. The displacement of over 42,000 Muslims in this predominately Muslim area could have triggered an exodus of Muslims in other parts of the East, but the armed forces’ courageous response thwarted a major calamity.

Interestingly, the battle triggered by the LTTE at Mavil-aru, too, came to an end in the first week with the LTTE being driven out of the area.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a veteran infantryman and one of the Gajaba Regiment pioneers told The Sunday Island that battles triggered by the LTTE at Mavil-aru in June-July 2006 and Muttur which preceded a large scale attack on the Muhamalai frontline in the second week of August 2006 compelled the government to go on the offensive. Had we ignored the opportunity, it would have given the LTTE an immense advantage, he said.

After stabilizing the Muttur area, the army directed an operation at LTTE-held Vakarai. Some of the bloodiest battles in the eastern theatre took place in this region. Despite being weakened by Karuna’s split, the LTTE had a strong force - artillery, mortars and even SAM-14 heat seeking missiles at its disposal. The operation launched on October 28, 2006 brought Verugal, Kathiraveli, Pannichankerni, Komathalamadu and Vakarai hospital under government control. This operation launched close on the heels of a humiliating defeat suffered by the army on the Muhamalai front ended on January 1. The LTTE retreated leaving two 152 mm artillery pieces, two 122mm mortars and one 120 mm mortar among other weaponry.

The severity of the Muhamalai losses fuelled reports of a doomsday scenario. The LTTE too must have felt that the army wouldn’t be able sustain large scale operations both on the eastern and northern theatres following the Muhamalai setback. They were proved wrong.

On February 24, 2007, the army launched an offensive to bring the Chenkalady-Badulla road under its control after 14 years. It came to an end on April 11, 2007 with the liberation of Kalladi, Unnachchi and Aiyathimalai.

To facilitate the offensive, the elite Special Task Force launched a major clearing operation on January 4, 2007, to neutralize the threat posed by the LTTE based in the Kanchikudichchi-aru jungles. The LTTE had established a strong network of bases in the area consequent to limited STF operations conducted in October and December 2006 under the supervision of the then STF Commandant Nimal Lewke.

On April 14, 2007, the army launched operations against the LTTE’s major base at Narakkamulla-Thoppigala area. The army slowly and steadily overcame LTTE resistance and about 10 days later mounted the final phase of its offensive. Fighting in extremely difficult conditions, the infantry, Special Forces and Commandos brought the area under their control by July 12, 2007. The LTTE, despite holding well defended positions advantageous to them failed to stop the army advance.

While the battle was on for Thoppigala, the army on July 6, 2007, liberated Muttur West along with the area south of the Trincomalee harbour, Upparu and Mannirasakulam.

The liberation of the impregnable Thoppigala-Narakkamulla area brought an end to major LTTE bases in the East. The ICRC announcement that it wouldn’t accept bodies of LTTE cadres killed in action in the East for transfer to the LTTE underscored the LTTE’s collapse there.

To the credit of the army, despite severe constraints even before the liberation of Thoppigala, it opened up a front east of the A9. The newly raised 57 Division which launched operations in March, 2007, targeting the Kilinochchi town scored its first major battlefield victory on March 24, 2008, when troops liberated the Madhu church area. Despite fierce resistance and a series of bloody counter attacks, the Division conducted offensive operations for almost 13 months to register its first major victory.

Once the LTTE lost Madhu, the offensive gathered momentum. The 57 Division troops liberated Palampiddi on May 16, 2008, Mundumurippu (May 23), Periyamadhu (June 15), Naddankandal (July 11), Kalvilan (August 13), Thunnukai and Uilankulam (August 22), Mallavi (September 2), Akkarayankulam tank bund (October 29), Akkarayankulam (November 5), Kokavil (December 1), Terumurikandy junction (December 10), Kilinochchi (January 2, 2009), Ramanathapuram, (Jan 17) and Vishvamadu (January 28).

Major General Jagath Dias succeeded Brigadier Sumith Manawadu as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 57 Division at an early stage of the offensive. The Division after taking Kilinochchi liberated Ramanathapuram and Vishvamadu east of the A9. Since then, it had been primarily engaged in clearing operations in the liberated area.

The 57 Division played a critical role in the army chief’s overall strategy to destroy the enemy power in the Vanni theatre. Recently it suspended offensive operations due to space (??????) constraints on the eastern flank. Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that only a section of the fighting formations were involved in the past few weeks of fighting.

While the 57 Division was battling it out in the Vanni West, Fonseka ordered the army to liberate Silavaturai and adjoining villages south of Mannar in the first week of September, 2007. Once the army secured the Silavathurai coastline, the newly established Task Force I (TF I) launched offensive operations along the north-western coast in September 2007. Under Brigadier Shavendra Silva’s command, the TF I was given Herculean task of clearing the 82km Mannar-Pooneryn coastal road, restore the ferry across the Jaffna lagoon and then cross the A9 at Paranthan.

Despite taking heavy losses, the LTTE resisted the TF I fiercely. The force battled the LTTE for nine months before it secured its first major battlefield victory. Silva led his troops to Adampan on May 9, 2008. But once the army brought Adampan under its full control, it made rapid progress. The TF I liberated Mullikandal, Minnaniranchan and Marattikannaddi (June 24),the Mannar rice bowl (June 29),linked-up with 57 Division at Periyamadu (June 30), Vidattaltivu (July 16), Illuppaikkadavai (August 2),Vellankulam(August 12),Mulankavil and Pallavarayankaddu (August 12),Nachchikuda (August 21),Maniyankulam(October 16),Vannerikulam(October 20),Nochchimoddai (October 28),Jeyapuram (October 29),Nachchikudah (October 29),Kiranchi (November 10), Devil’s Point and Vallaipadu (November 13),Pooneryn (November 15),Sinna-Paranthan (December 23),Nalanawakulam (December 26), Paranthan (January 1,2009),Murasumoddai (January 8),Dharmapuram (January 15),Vishvamadu (January 28),Thevipuram (February 20) and Iranapalai junction (March 17).

The 57 Division and TF I had been involved in the liberation of strategically situated Vishvamadu area believed to be main LTTE base east of the A9.

After taking Pooneryn, the TF I had moved east on a wide front and threatened to cut off Elephant Pass. As TF I troops battled their way towards Elephant Pass, the 53 and 55 Divisions commanded by Brigadiers Prasanna Silva and Kamal Gunaratna advanced across the Muhamalai line. The 53 deployed south of the A9 and 55 north of the A9 pushed swiftly towards Elephant Pass and the enemy retreated.

Then the TF I had advanced southwards of Paranthan to draw out LTTE units defending Kilinochchi town against the 57 Division. The TF which had taken a deadly route from the north-western coast to Anandapuram a few kilometers away from the Mullaitivu coast would go down in the history as the fighting formation to take the longest route.

While the TF I advanced along the Paranthan-Mullaitivu road taking the entire north of the road under its control, the 57 advanced on TF 1’s right flank. Since then, Brigadier Shavendra Silva’s formation had been categorized as the 58 Division.

The 55 Division had taken the coastal road towards Mullaitivu and is now positioned just outside the civilian safety zone. The 53 Division is engaged in the final battle on the eastern flank.

The liberation of the Mannar coastline helped efforts to thwart LTTE attempts to bring in urgently needed supplies from Tamil Nadu.

In January 2008, under Brigadier Nandana Udawatte’s command, the newly created 59 Division mounted operations targeting Mullaitivu, on the north-eastern coast. The 59 Division troops marched across Anandakulam and Nagacholai forest reserves. Udawatte took a year to reach Mullaitivu after overcoming some of the bloodiest counter attacks faced by the army in the entire Eelam War.

The 59 Division scored its first major battlefield victory on May 30 when troops captured Munagam base. The Division captured Michael (July 4), Sugandan (July 27) and Jeevan (August 16) bases before taking the area west of the Nayaru lagoon on August 21. It also captured Gajabapura (October 23), Kumulamunai (November 11), Otiyamalai (November 29), Mulliyawalai (December 26) and Mullaitivu (January 25, 2009).

The army chief also launched the newely raised Task Force II, Task Force III, Task Force IV and Task Force VIII. The TF II commanded by Brigadier Rohana Bandara launched operation in June 2008 from an area south of Palamoddai. It was the first fighting formation to maneuver along the west-east axis across the A9.

The TF II liberated Navvi (July 11), Puliyankulam (December 4), Kanagarayankulam (December 5) and Udayarkattukulam tank bund (January 21, 2009)

Cont...

The TF III commanded by Brigadier Sathyapriya Liyanage which launched operations from Vannivilankulam in November 2008 liberated Mankulam (November 17), Olumadu (November 25) and Ampakamam (December 15). It was the second fighting formation to manouever along the west east axis across the A9.

The TF IV launched in December 2008 liberated Nedunkerni (December 20), Oddussudan (January 4, 2009) and Keridattadu (January 12). Commanded by Colonel Nishantha Wanniarachchi, it was the second fighting formation deployed on the Mullaitivu front.

The Eelam War IV brought to the fore a new generation of battlefield commanders from the rank of GOCs downwards. The army chief’s bold decision not solely to depend on seniority paved the way for some dynamic young men to command Brigades and Battalions. The appointment as Commando Regiment chief Shavendra Silva as the GOC of 58 Division is a case in point. Unlike his predecessors, Fonseka regularly visited operational areas to review battlefield progress and keep the offensive on track.

Although the LTTE mounted some major counter attacks causing considerable losses and in some instances used chemicals on the advancing troops, the army top brass kept the offensive on course.

The deployment of Special Forces, Commandos and the infantry in keeping with new strategy brought success. The army stunned the LTTE with covert operations behind their lines. Operating in small groups, elite troops caused havoc among the defenders. But nothing could be as important as the new recruits who answered the army’s call to join the battle against the LTTE. The army chief has paid a glowing tribute to these recruits whose contribution made the final victory possible.

Contribution made by other support services from Transport to Signals must be warmly acknowledged. The Directorate of Military Intelligence too played an important role in the campaign since the break-up of the LTTE in March 2004. The DMI took the LTTE challenge head-on and thereby facilitated the overall offensive. The role played by the army engineers was as important as any other. They successfully met the challenging task of clearing areas and the road network to facilitate security forces movements and civilian resettlement.

Prabath Sahabandu, editor of The Island and Keerthi Waranakulasuriya of the Divaina are two others who kept faith with our Defence capabilities and in no small measure sustained the Nation’s confidence in winning the war.

The country should felicitate and recognise this elitist group of journalists who have done their profession and country proud.

Where is he heading? Eritrea. He couldn’t say how he actually got hold of the money. The money was confiscated. But no further investigation from there. This happened in 2008 according to the program details.

I was thinking how many times Tiger terrorists have paid Eritrean arms suppliers like this.

Interesting about NYSE.

For this quarter, the first automatic circuit breaker level for DJIA is defined as a 10% loss (1050 points).

Followed by circuit breakers for 20% and 30% (market closes for the day).

The threshold for the Milanka Price Index at CSE is 5%.

Current market capitalisation is just over 12 billion USD. A 5% loss translates to over 600 mill USD.

CSE uses the MIT trading system, so at least the software is locally produced and its workings would be known - and MIT interacts very closely with CSE. But the equation may now be different since London Stock Exchange bought MIT. Something the regulators and auditors need to keep in mind for the future?

And in UK, analysts expect market instability if a gov is not formed quickly - so very possible that we will have an announcement to that effect, if not today early the coming week.

Here's an explanation for the LankaGuardian articles:

"The UNP working committee met on May 5 under the chairmanship of Ranil Wickremesinghe. Speaking on this occasion, Tissa Attanayake said that there was no point in shifting party positions around. What had to be done was to take the party to the people. Lakshman Kiriella spoke next. He stressed the need to win over the Sinhala Buddhist voters. He said that Kandy was a Buddhist district and had always been UNP, but that they now had only 80,000 votes in the district and had only one Sinhala Buddhist MP. He said that the party had lost this base as a result of the mistakes made by the leadership."

http://www.island.lk/2010/05/09/politics1.html

Anonymous said...

"The most important point discussed at this working committee meeting was the Sinhala Buddhist question. It was pointed out that of the 60 UNP MPs, only 31 were Sinhala Buddhist and of the national list only two were Sinhala Buddhists.

Sajith Premadasa spoke up and said that this party that had been built up by past leaders was now in dire straits because of arbitrary decisions that have been made. He said that there had to be changes in the decision making process and the organizational structure of the party and that all office bearers had to be appointed by election. He stressed that this problem could not be solved by handing out powerless positions like the one offered to him. He stated that the party had been the voice of the haves and not the have-nots. He said that for example the party had made the wrong decisions on the war. We asked the party to support the war, but this call was not heeded. We kept talking about Kilinochchi and Pamankada. We described Thoppigala as a jungle. Such comments led to the whole party being labeled as traitors to the nation.

There are various positions that are being created. When Karu Jayasuriya left the paty the position of deputy leader disappeared. When he came back, it reappeared. When S.B.Dissanayake came in, a position called national organizer was created. When he went the position also disappeared. It is a wrong policy to take decisions to tide over problems temporarily. We need a permanent solution said Sajith."

Retards have also lost the Sinhala Christian vote base as well if you look at Negombo haha.

When will these FOOLS learn that their elitest Christian extremist Colombian vote base is small and being led by them is what is costing them? But true to form they are trying to trick and con their way out of it rather than take a genuine approach to change the party's decline. They still think they are not doing anything wrong and the people should amend to them, not the other way round.

Anonymous said...

Anyway its clear their attempt to grab the Sinhala Buddhist vote is by trying to "fix" their anti-war stance (driven by their anti-Sinhala Buddhist stance/suddha worshipping amongst other reasons). How can they do that? Through crap like in LankaGuardian and Gonseka

I think this model is good for the devolution. And there shud be a small upper house [say senate] headed by president that makes higher decisions. There is one more election to choose teh president and upper house.

Like he says lower house is selected by teh vote of gam sabha, and gam sabha are selected by of small area. And lower house manages most of earthly issues like admin and development.

Thanks, brother .. I remember that this is your expertise and forte'!

The point is, something triggered the meltdown, and the controls failed.

Were the HF/Algorithms themselves influenced by the global financial crisis? I am sure they were, but they were perhaps too sensitive and over reacted.

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle on measurements states that incresed accuracy is gained at the expense of incresed uncertainty. In all control systems it is like that .. increased gain is at the expense of decreased stability.

In HF/Algorithm trading it seems to me that the system is overly sensitive and not damped enough .. so the stability margin is narrow, and the system becomes unstable when subjected to large amplitudes on critical inputs.

That is why I made the tentative proposal for delaying execution of orders for a day or two .. increasing the stability margin .. shall we say?

The question is, in automated trading, how stable is stable enough?

re: pig-balla (MIA)

just one example of this MF's despicable reporting.

(there are hundreds of examples)

FACTS

1. on july 15, 1996 tigers led by col karuna launched a sea borne attack on our mulativu SLA camp. concurrently a land attack was also lauched. over 1,000 SLA guys died.

2. a large number of tigers around 500 died.

3. claerly there was a big gap in casualties.

4. in assymatrical warfare it is a MUST to impose the numerical superiority on the enemy. we lauched a VIOLENT retaliation. part two of it was op satjaya. part one was using our SFs to HARVEST as many tigers as possible.

5. our SFs engaged in an HARVESTING op NOT a rescue op!!! for propoganda purposes it was named "rescue" but we knew by the time we launched the SF op that there were no SLA survivors. all survivors were evacuated WELL BEFORE that.

of course a few SLA guys on ground were commandered by the SF to carryout their function.

6. SF started HAMMERING tigers with arti. the arti guns/storage section was only partly destroyed. with air cover we managed to save part of it. SF guys used these to BATTER tigers who were bogged down in close proximity with their LOOT. bloody greedy MFs!!! their doom was due to that!!

7. in our retaliation hundreds of tigers perished with the loot. they managed to take away some but this TOTALLY UNEXPECTED ASSAULT had them wandering.

then tigers recollected their armour and cadres and restarted their arti attacks.

laphir was injured but refused to escape when he was ordered to do so. his personal heroics would have killed at least a few hundred tigers.

eventually the tiger tally surpassed our tally.

tiger retaliated by bombing a passenger train in dehiwala, true to their barbaric style.

BULLSHIT

pigbal swine reported that SLA got didived into 2 seperate groups and started to fire at each other!!!!!

what total crap.

1. true, we had 2 arti points in mulaitivu but one was totally destroyed. and by the time we deployed SF for the harvesting op, there were no SLA survivors apart from the ones in the SF vicinity.

2. IF SLA "sitting ducks" didn't respond to tigers, how the fcuking hell would they respond to arti attacks (by our own SF) AFTER the camp was overrun????

it doesn't make sense.

3. by twisting the facts with his usual BULLSHIT PIG SWINE CRAP, he tried to show,

3.1 tigers are INVINCIBLE

3.2 our attacks on tigers didn't work

3.3 we should not have attacked bcos it killed our own guys

3.4 at least in future we should not just respond to arti atatcks. we should wait and verify its definitely LTTE arti attacks!! note that this was the time LTTE was raising its arti capabilities. had we followed such a DOOMED wait and see crap strategy, we would have lost all battles.

3.5 our heroes including the GREATEST EVER - laphir - are dumb and not quite heroes.

bloody swine pigfcuker pig-balla athas.

can this DUMB shitt eating pig has such a developed brain to link all these???

NO.

bugger was acting for some bigger/brainier masters.

whatever it is bugger's plan didn't work, as usual.

like jr introduced preferential voting for the corrupt to stay in power.. TN and north east politicians use TE as a talking point .. 25 years withing the tiger borders gave people TWAT. so i think with time people are going to have better livelyhoods and the nature of impermanence will show the TE IDEAL a thing or two about permanence :)

Moshe, old boy, yes it's a little light on SLAF activities. But it does touch upon some of the significant contributions of SLAF; supplementary firepower and air support in the form of aerial
reconnaissance, close air support and casualty evacuation. What's missing are the bunker busting missions that killed some head terrorist honchos such as the 'peace dove' Thamilselvan and kept others perpetually underground. A huge psychological factor contributing to paranoia and disorganization in the terrorist ranks. No mention of SLAF support to navy during attacks against Sea Tiger bastards and bombing missions that took out some of the heavy terrorist artillery and ammunition stockpiles.

The army strategy demonstrated that the capture of territory, while important, was
secondary. Instead, the main objective shifted to inflicting high attrition rates on the LTTE
and maintaining the initiative by launching continuous offensive operations along multiple
thrust lines, to divide and destroy LTTE forces piecemeal. This was in large measure enabled
by the supplementary firepower and air support provided by the SLAF, in the form of aerial
reconnaissance, close air support and casualty evacuation, all of which greatly assisted the
army’s operations.

Moshe, dear chap, I also like the way Sergei concluded the report. Very nice to hear this about our own army chaps from a real defense analyst. There are fake ones like DBS Jayraj, dime a dozen, always ready to downplay the significance of quality of fighting men in our forces.

The defeat of the LTTE was the result of strong political will and public support that was
uniformly consistent with the military’s strategic and operational objectives. The army had,
in the process, demonstrated its prowess in jungle warfare, small unit- and night-operations.
Its Commando and Special Forces Regiments had acquired considerable experience in covert
operations, namely LRP, LRRP and large-scale hostage rescue situations.
After nearly thirty years of experience in high and low intensity counter-insurgency warfare,
the Sri Lanka Army is likely to rank among the most combat experienced armies in the world.

Cheers!

aqua,

you make perfect sense. but as you know this is SENSELESS!!

fully agree that with time they will realize it. BUT provided time is ALLOWED to heal it.

something don't get healed by time. instead they aggravate it.

e.g. DEEP desires

they multiply with time. unfortunayelt TE has been injected into the hearts of tamils as kids (and continue to happen).

let me give an example.

brett is a 18 year old guy in love with kama a 18 year old girl. kama left brett bcos he couldn't provide for her. brett's friends tell him to forget the whorre and move on. but brett cannot shake her off his head. kama has forgotten brett and lives on her way.

1. one day brett wins $1 million in a lottery. he rushes to kama and proposes.

did prosperity make him forget her???? NO.

2. brett's friends make fun of him for carryon on with kama whom they call a slutt. and for not forgetting her.

will that change his plan???? NO

3. jason (30) befriends kama, fcuks her and becomes father of her son. now that makes brett forget her!!! (even if he doesn't, that's fine. jason will continue to fcuk her!!!!)

this is what colonization does to the TE dream. it fcuks it so hard that it becomes not viable thereafter.

(even if the dream continues thereafter, fine. nothing happens.)

Konappu Bandara,

Thanks for the link to the FDI article. It is a short and sweet summary with the correct perspective.

However, the article glosses over many important events. For example,

- the strategy for capturing Kilinochchi .. the Stalingrad that was to be the graveyard of the SLA,

- the breakout and march of the 53rd and 55th Divisions down the East coast and to Alimankada,

- the final rescue of the Tamil hostages from the Mullaitivu pocket,

- the failure of the global Tamil Diaspora to exploit "human rights" to rescue the LTTE leaders, and

- the eradication of the entire LTTE leadership without allowing them to escape and resurrect the conflict, in contrast to the escape of Osama and the Al Quaida/Taliban leadership from Afghanistan which led to the continuation of that conflict to this day

... to mention but a few important events of Eelam War IV.

I posted the article in full at the SriLankaPatriots blog also.

Sri Lanka blacklists Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) representatives

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka defense sources say that the authorities have blacklisted the 272 Tamils elected to the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) in elections held last Sunday.

These representatives of Tamil Diaspora were elected from UK, France, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, and Australia.

Sri Lanka government has denied recognition of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE).

The intelligence wings of Sri Lanka have already obtained information on these representatives and they will not be allowed entry to Sri Lanka.

A chief of Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) has told media that they expect to arrive in Sri Lanka with the support of the international community to meet the Sri Lankan Tamils in their homeland.

Patriots!

Let us watch the progress of these talks between the GOSL and the Tiger Nominated Agents (TNA) CLOSELY to ensure that the hard won VICTORY of all Sri Lankans over separatist terrorists is not sold down the river in back room bargains!

................
Govt. begins direct talks with TNA

The government has finally begun behind the scene contacts with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to hammer out a solution to the vexing ethnic question, just as the country nears the first anniversary of the crushing of the most ruthless terrorist outfit, the LTTE.

TNA Leader R. Sampanthan in an interview with The Nation was tight-lipped about the content of their contacts with the government stating that they were still in the initial stages and even refused to identify the members of the government who are in touch with him on grounds he was not authorised to reveal names.
But, he revealed that the contacts were not directly with President Rajapaksa.

It is believed that with egging from India, the government was moving in the direction of implementing fully the 13th Amendment to the Constitution as a solution to settling the issue permanently.
In the past, the problem for the Southern leaders has been the granting of full Police and land powers to the provinces, which still raises much suspicion and concern among many Southerners.

Sampanthan told The Nation that during past negotiations both sides had gone into granting of measures beyond the 13th Amendment from Mangala Moonasinghe Select Committee to August 2000, Chandrika Kumaratunga Proposals to CFA period under Ranil Wickremesinghe and finally under APRC proposals under President Rajapaksa.

In regard to Police powers, he said, they are absolutely essential for any institution of government to function. “Are the Police exercising their powers properly? When your Police force and your Police powers are in a rotten state how can you expect us to have any faith in that Police service? Let us have very clear cut ideas about this. We do not want Police powers to divide the country, but to maintain law and order in a territory in which we have powers of governance. Police powers are fundamental. It is there in every country where there is a power sharing arrangement,” the TNA Leader insisted.

On devolving land powers, Sampanthan asked why they can’t be given the subject that is contained in the Bandaranaike-Chelvanayagam Pact of 1957. “It was signed in 1957 by a leader of Bandaranaike’s calibre, one of the greatest leaders this country produced and President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s political guru. Why can’t we be given what Mr. Bandaranaike offered us in 1957?”

He said they are prepared to negotiate honestly and faithfully and would like the government to trust them. “We are a moderate Tamil political party. Of the 18 Tamil MPs from the Northeast, 14 come from my party. We did not accept views of hard-line forces, who wanted hard-line positions stated in our manifesto. We dropped them and every one of them lost at the election. We did not give nominations to untrustworthy people, who subsequently joined the government and contested. Every one of them lost the election. So, we have acted very honestly and very straight forwardly.”

Even in the past, he recalled that under Chelvanayagam’s leadership “the Tamil side was absolutely honest – 100%. In our election manifesto in 1970 the Federal Party called upon the Tamil people to vote against any party or candidate who espouse separation. We put that in writing in our manifesto. That was the degree of our honesty.”

Sampanthan said finding the solution would not take long and the President should work very fast on it. “He can bank on our cooperation. We will give him the fullest support. We will be very honest with him. We will not deceive him. We will not cheat him. We will not cheat Sinhala people.”

LTTE remnants in three way split
Reports reaching us indicate that the remnants of the LTTE now active in the diaspora have split into three groups.

Following the defeat of the LTTE on May 18, the LTTE split into two, namely the KP group and the Castro group. The KP group has gone underground following the defection of their leader to the GoSL side. This group is still carrying out covert activities to encourage the diaspora to reconcile with mainstream Sri Lankan society and join in the reconciliation efforts of the GoSL. Recent New Year activities in London (especially in former LTTE areas of East London) indicate that they have been successful to some extent as a large number of diaspora Tamils joined their Singhala brethren in New Year festivities.

Meanwhile the LTTE hardliners namely the Castro group headed by LTTE Overseas Intelligence Chief Arivazhakan who were busy organising the fantasy Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) have split into two factions due to internal infighting over the composition of the imaginary TGTE. One group is led by Arivazhakan himself (a Castro loyalist) and the other by a US based lawyer who was involved in the UNP peace process.

More and more splits are expected as the GoSL intelligence operatives have somewhat been successful in infiltrating diaspora circles and sowing discord among them.

Aqua you are wrong.

Tamils want TE, there is nothing to change their minds other than frustrate it (through recolonisation).

If we start development they will happily take it and still push for TE. They are ungrateful lot. They want us to “develop” the “Tamil economy”, same way during, before and after piss talks/CFA we essentially ran & paid for their “de-facto state” providing all services, food and salaries etc, while they boasted “look we have a separate state”. This is the same “deal” they want. We pay & provide everything for free like slaves while they “rule”.

It was Amithalingam who said “we have schools, hospitals, roads, a good economy, why not a separate state?” (not entirely sure but I believe the “Tamil economy” benefited immensely from Mrs Bs time). They WILL DO THE SAME again.

That is why development should be tied to recolonisation. We can call it “development for reconciliation” and put the ball in the Tamils court as it would be.

It is always us who have to give something, while they just take. Right now Tamilia and their white masters are also “expecting” us to do the work i.e. give them “stuff” while they just keep handing out threats and more demands.

Ananda,

"Transexual Government of Tamil Eelam Blacklisted! YAHOO!"

We should not simply "turn them away" if they fly into SL.

We should arrest them for supporting the LTTE and try them for war crimes. That would be a great slap in the face. SL must monitor die-ass-pora activities, every meeting, every individual and not limited to Tamils but their suddha masters. Must arrest and detain suddha supporters as well.

If possible should try KP operations.

Moshe,

"IF the UNP had supported war as someone says, they would have lost the 52% AND lost sinhala buddhist votes as well bcos they vote for the REAL ACHIEVERS not for their henchos."

Had Ranilam and the UNP supported the war effort from the beginning or the period around the capture of the Eastern province (July 2007) then they would have got "credit" for the war to, assuming they did nothing of the sort they actually did. But their kalu-suddha white worshipping homosexual nature prevents any of that.

They are now trying another shameless tactic to get votes. As they know they cannot build up their own "war credentials" (Gonseka went bust with people seeing straight through him and the UNPs tricks) they are trying to destroy the Governments war credentials with BS stories from their mouth pieces like LankaGuardian (even Sundaymudslinger which was viciously attacking not only our soldiers but their families as well suddenly realising their deep hatred being publish openly was back firing took a different turn and started pretending to care about our soldiers well being and their “complaints/criticism” was out of “concern”. Amazing how they emulate their white masters so well yet they struggled to hide their hate as their “concerns” were laced with cynicism and mockery). They are taking a pro-soldiers/military premise that will get peoples attention & something the people are concerned about then they try and turn the people against the Government with fairy tales of “poor treatment” and “not caring”. Again its also timed for May18th.

Hope a massive event is put on and everyone comes out to celebrate our great victory. Suddha and his local lackeys will be ready to condemn and attack us one way or another. White apes will report like this :If no celebrations its because winning the war/destroying their foreign policy tool was a crime and we acknowledge it & our ashamed of ourselves and our an evil people. If we do celebrate its because we are evil and have no shame.

Think Tank

Guys we cannot keep on procrastinating this.

We should start at least at a simple level.

We are already a think tank. We generate new ideas that are important for the future of our country.

We provide alternative view points to socio-political event.

We discuss those ideas.

These are the basic characteristics of a think tank.

What we lack is the next step.

A think tank how ever proficient is nothing if it cant get its ideas out into the society.

I suggest we make a pdf copy of our main article and email it to every one of us, then we can forward that to our friends and other influential people.

We should also generate a subscriber list so anybody who come here can leave their email so they will get a pdf copy when a new article is published here.

what do you guys think?

SK,
This looks like Mahen is doing a DBSJ and creating fiction rather than basing things on facts. To me this looks like guess work. There is always bound to be friction among groups and that doesn't mean our intelligence is playing an active role. Even if we are doing this, it is unlikely that they would be publicizing this fact.

Nice to see you're back Dhesha.

I am still up for the Think Tank.

What we need is a formal website to publish any articles, not a blogsite.

For example the "McKenzie Institute" of Canada is like what a one man show or something which publishes articles once a every 3 months (once a year they have something on SL) that are then re-published in Island, and Lakehouse papers, even DailyMirror.

The question is, in automated trading, how stable is stable

--------------------------------
Filtering, Control and other Engineering principal is not that developed in Quantitative Finance / Algo trading or H/F trading. Only in recent times people have started to research on application of Optimal Control and Filtering theory in to Quantitative Finance. The Algorithmic Trading done by trading are based on very simple algorithms and they would not function in highly volatile markets. The correction that was made after the 1000 points drop must have been due to traders doing manual overrides to their systems.

All the H/F and algo trading would function only during low volatiliy scenarios (other than few top quality algo trading houses) So, for at least another 5-10 years don't expect too much to change. These are new research areas and it would take some time till the industry to implement stability in to their systems to handle market meltdowns.

The report presented by the Central Bank for the year 2009 carries errors and statistics that cannot be accepted says Dr. Anula Dias, a former senior head of the Bank."

How fitting.

LankaTruth is run by the JVP.
JVP is main constituent of "DNA" Party in Parliament.

DNA is made up of what?

A former chief justice, a former General and former Marxist revolutionaries now following and accepting capitalism and the "supreme evil" they sent 20,000to their deaths over. Now we can add to the list a former BoC honcho as their economic advisor. Good to know they have got their own Harsha Silva to rival his Sirasa economics with LankaTruth economics.

This gang of suddha worshippers and traitors take pleasure in seeing the country crash and burn because they are not in power. According to their zombie supporters only UNP know how to handle the economy and JVP run the country. Hikz.

Sri Lanka resettles Sinhala families chased away by LTTE from North
Mon, May 10, 2010, 08:43 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services has taken measures to resettle 80 Sinhala families chased away nearly 25 years ago from their homes in the North by the LTTE.

According to Minister of Resettlement, Milroy Fernando, these displaced families were living opposite the Madhu Road Railway station for a long period providing services to Roman Catholic pilgrims from the South visiting the Madhu Shrine. They were driven away by the terrorists on August 17, 1985.

The Minister on last Friday opened a new Divisional Secretariat to bring back civil administration to Madhu.

Caritas had agreed to build houses for all 80 families, the Minister said.

The Sinhala Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) met Minister Fernando, former Rehabilitation Minister and present Industries Minister Rishad Bathiyudeen, Northern Province Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri, District Secretary of Mannar, the chief incumbent monk of a temple in the area and representatives of the INGO Caritas to discuss the resettlement program.

Minister Fernando and other officials have also visited Manthai, one of the first areas where the resettlement program was implemented in the Mannar District to inspect the progress of the resettled IDPs, Defence Ministry reported.

Dhesha,

"He was investigating the use of chemical weapons."

Whats there to investigate, ask Gonseka!

The only chemical weapons used was by the LTTE and i believe it was CS gas (given to the LTTE "Police" by Britain) that they tossed at us. I remember at the time back in January last year Tamilia in their propaganda (and on sites like LNP) were boasting gleefully about a chemical attack against our Army, how thousands of soldiers would be slaughtered ("get ready for a wipe out") in such a manner in the mighty "counter attack". Pro SL media (and Reuters the only Western media) at the time were filled with such stories of use of chemical weapons by Tamilia against our Army.

Then what happens. Tamilia propaganda true to form claims we're the ones who did it to them.

Its clear those who accuse others the most are themselves the most guilty (including Gonseka).

Tamilia went around crying Genocide. Truth is if the situation was reversed in terms of Military strength, that is what they would have done to us, in fact that is what they tried when the situation was not reversed. It is our soldiers who like their ancestors before them that have always protected us from such a fate not just these past 30 years but for the last two millennia.

This is why these people including the Colombians are criminal in my mind and i can never forgive them or lull myself into a false sense of security with them. They are forever a threat to our nation. I want them exposed and to answer for what they have done to our people over the last 150 years along with their suddha masters who pull the strings.

One day it will happen.

Pol in mind there wont be absolute victory or truth revelation in such a battle. When ever something is exposed the other side will have an answer ready to get themselves out of it.

We just have to keep on fighting.

This is exactly why we need the think tank mechanism to take out ideas to the public.

He worked for LeN too.
As exposed by the Island Political columnist he is just a fraudster masquerading as a journalist.

Its ridiculous that anyone who writes something is a "journalist". By that reasoning all of us here can be called journalists. Most of us have written to LankaWeb or commented on websites with powerful information dispensed in well written pieces that can be considered articles by their own right, in better quality and logic than monkeys at LeN. Guess we're all journalists.

As long as he continues to resettle all the ppl [Sinhala Muslim included] chased from N/E he gets my full credit. Not just that, he shud then move into balancing the populations by creating whole new settlements.

At a time when designated Diyasen is sleeping with enemy for the hope of few votes, this is a doubly great news.

re: think tanks

from wikipedia.

"A think tank (or policy institute) is an organization or individual that conducts research and engages in advocacy in areas such as social policy, political strategy, economy, science or technology issues, industrial or business policies, or military advice. Many think tanks are non-profit organizations, which some countries such as the United States and Canada provide with tax exempt status. Other think tanks are funded by governments, advocacy groups, or businesses, or derive revenue from consulting or research work related to their projects.

According to the National Institute for Research Advancement, think tanks are "one of the main policy actors in democratic societies ..., assuring a pluralistic, open and accountable process of policy analysis, research, decision-making and evaluation".

A study in early 2009 found a total of 5,465 think tanks worldwide. Of that number, 1,777 were based in the United States and approximately 350 in Washington DC alone."

Moshe its an allergic reaction to re-settlement of Sinhalese in the Tamil only homOland just proposed.

But according to them Sinhalese in the West coast (all the way to Negombo?) are Tamils who become Sinhala in the last 100 years (wtf?).

This must be there way of justifying A) SL is Tamil homOland and B)the homoland map itself which comes all the way to Negombo anyway. That map is joke anyway. They should claim the whole island or none of it, not the bullshit they made up like that. Guess Balasingham must have been more drunk than usual when he drew it (he did include the central province before rubbing that off). Drunk ‘ole Bala the para balla was the one who spearheaded this move based on improvisation off of the plans by Chelva, but Chevla wanted the whole island no?

Anonymous said...

Anyway I actually like this resettlement idea. First we send the Catholics, then the Buddhists, then the Muslims. Haha. That just screws up these monoethnic cretins bad LOL.
Plus under this scheme we can send in loads of Sinhalese, say they “snuck in” to get re-settlement benefits, shrug our shoulders and say “oh well” + “ it is akin to the way Tamilia migrate into SL from Toilet Nadu, then Tamilia migrating into the West using lies to get a better life”. We can give those examples to spit on Tamilia and justify such movement. Albeit we will be “tarring” the Sinhala name a bit but it is WITHIN OUR OWN COUNTRY –can thus also raise that argument and paint Tamilia as racist and denying our rights for freedom of movement.

This way we can corner the human rights monkeys, either they have to back us and when they don’t we can attack them for their anti-Sinhala racism which in itself is a violation of our rights by the rights champions.

If more “objections” follow we can raise the issue of illegal migration from Toilet Nadu and say we’ll need to deport those sakkyilyas. So either accept it or we’ll be white boating some Tamilia back to their real homoland.

Also creates space for a new wave of your boats to Oz concept.

The possibilities of not just screwing over TE (with recolonisation) but all these sakkiylias, their NGOs, their white masters, the kallonthonis, India, devolution monkeys and other enemies of SL are endless!

Such beauty is recolonisation. Why is there such opposition (from many ordinary Sinhalese and MR camp), when the benefits and smack downs we can dish out are HUGE?

[If MR starts kissing TNA ass, and worse does it in secret, he can expect to go from hero to zero pretty fast himself. If he takes the Sinhala vote base for granted he is making a terrible mistake. (Signs of this can be seen with how he treated Wimal)]

No argument; Agree 100% !!!

However, my lines to "Colombo" tell me things are on a bit more curvy-bump road, i.e. they are a bit more sophisticated, "strategically meshed," and what one see at face value is not what one should garner/fathom as the "real value!"

Let's wait and see...if somehow things don't pan out, get out of hand, starts caving-in, etc. then WE WILL RECKON WITH WHOEVER TO GIVE US ACCOUNTABILITY - I for one, promise so!

Enough said...I guess for now uh?

A. we should have two spaces.

1. to discuss, brainstorm, abuse one another during that process (lol!), thrash out ideas and arrive at conclusions.

2. another to PUBLISH.

B. we should have a catchy name that has NOTHING to do with patriotism, unitary, etc.

remember we havt o take our ideas to the enemies' frontier. the enemy should not be deterred by the name, etc. it should also not mean anything "controvercial" to traitors. we have to accept they are UNFORTUNATELY humans and voters.

in effect we have to compete with them for policy PRIORITIZATION. we should be able to BEAT THEM in their own ground.

C. we should include NUMBERS, GRAPHS, MAPS, and other BS.

use language and terms that are not controvercial.

e.g. the word colonization is TABOO.

D. should be able to quote references when needed.

But i am concerned.

If there is recolonisation taking place (i understand such cannot be broadcast out load) but it is happening then i will not be as concerned.

Recol is the only safety net.
Signs up till now have not gone in that direction. I hope what has been proposed over resettling Sinhala Catholics will 1) Actually take place and 2) be just the beginning of greater resettlement/recolonisation.

Good point brother.

I agree about that religious thingy...I still remember the early Sinhela civilians who were massacred by the LTTE ponna-whore-bitches (who else would massacare unarmed civilians?) were Christian Sinhelas who had been given land in the Trinco district by DSS' program of land-reclamation for development.

These were the poor of the poorest, hapless Christian Sinhelas (who had been living earlier in the western province, along the coast) in Dollar Farm Kent Farm who were the sacrificial lambs (from our side as we, the GOSL did not care about their security) in the ever blood-thirsty quest of the LTTE ponna-whore-bitches to spill "Chingala blood"....I still recoil in horror when I recall the images of decapitated infants, mothers, burnt alive very-very old men/women, etc...that the JRJ GOSL of the day was determined to hide from the country at large (as, for one thing, it did not want another racial-riot in the South, but more importantly, it id not want he populace to know it had just started losing control of NE SL to a band of horrific racist-terrorists!).

Based on my info, you are both right and wrong.

No, he is not interested in "Tamil votes" if it means the votes of the average Tamil man/woman in the N & E as the next election where that matter is a at least 5-6 years away.

However I think he is interested in "Tamil votes" in terms of votes in the parliament. He does not have 2/3 to do some "great work" (believe me they are indeed "great work" ;)) and what he wants to do is to get it somehow and "take care of things for good"...enough said I guess...this is all "good" stuff I am told...let me resort to Sinhela for comfort...

Uragey mas uragey angey-ma thiyala thamai kapanna onai.

Is this the truth? Fcuk, I am not sure. What confidence factor do I have then? Simple, the track record so far where such "good programs" were promised were very diligently and authentically (i.e. not watered-down stuff) delivered (and in some cases with "extreme prejudice" despite some I-have-my-head-up-my-arse pundits saying "aha, no, he can never do that; this is a guerilla movement; guerilla movements don't die easily, especially not with such a porous border nation such as yours which is an island!!!).

There is no unique way to skin a cat or a tiger. However there are two things MR can't do. 1. Harvesting/white vanning TNA 2. Do nothing with TNA. Whatever MR do with TNA likely to end up screwing TNA. MR the grand chess master seems enjoying with a team who worshipped some one ended up his life in amude in a lagoon. Further it is important to get TNA votes when passing 2/3 amendments even though the contrary is possible and easier. Ya, LeN response is even funnier..

Re: ThinkTank

I would say do the brainstorming etc here and admins publish articles on a separate .lk, .org, .net or .com we site. A blog has relatively less reputation. For example MD writes an article on colonization on this blog and every one discuss for 1-2 months and after that considering all aspects MD or another will publish an article on colonization in new website. I am not sure how to deal with cost. The best and the easiest way would be one admin to be generous - it may cost less than $100 per year. As we have 4 admins (SP, A-USA, MD, SK) if one can write one article for every 4 months we have new article every month. My suggestion for name would be "Research Group for Peace and Development in Sri Lanka".

Moshe Dyan said...

"Research Group for Peace and Development"

sounds good.

Peace AND Development = colonization

of course we don't use such harsh words in the publication.

similar words.

neutralization = outright annihilation of the LTTE

humanitarian operation = fcuking LTTE terrorists with no trace, auspicious time or name

collective empowerment = screwing racists political parties in the north at LG, PC polls after a process of colonization

national policy framework = no fcuking federal BS

safeguarding peace, harmony and security = getting rid of vile LTTE elements without mercy

LOL. So true. However even after such an event they will complain.

In 1948 when the Citizenship Act was Passed WeSuperior Jaffna Tamiz voted in favour of it. 10 years later the bitched about it. Today they call it genocide. So do not be surprised if they complain. That is all they do.

so his young teacher asks him why.

he says he sleeps with his mom and places his finger on his mom's navel. otherwise he gets really scared of ghosts and fears mom would leave him at night.

so the teacher allows it.

but sometime later she feels strange in her cunt.

she whispers to johnney that his finger is NOT in her navel.

he quitely replies back, "so you think it's my finger??"

guys,

something tells me that banda-chelva crap is going to stage a comeback.

why??

bcos it was the first racist agreement.

it happened during peacetime.

BOTH banda and chelva were jokers. i'm pretty sure their PERSONAL friendship led to the crap B-C pact.

chelva was born in 1898. banda in 1899. both studied at STC. it is impossible that they were not friends. chelva being senior to banda, bugger would have had some respect from banda. this is what went wrong. so when chelva came with the B-C pact, foolish banda would have thought, my older friend from STC would not screw me.

when banda finally READ it a year later (after signing of course!!) he realised this chelva bugger had taken him for a ride.

then banda tore it.

chelva thought what fcuking right my younger friend from STC has do such a thing and lauched a DISPROPORTIONATELY BIG hateful campaign of racism against sinhala letters triggering 1958 riots.

there was NO NEED for banda to give ANY RESPECT to a piece of shitt like chelva.

the only reason for his respect got to be the friendship of them and chelva's seniority at school.

our leaders should be checked to see if they have any personal sexual or other relationships with racist politicians like TNA MFs.

RE: Madhu resettlement

Something is better than nothing, so we should applaud this.

Maybe MR HAS A PLAN (touchwood) in appointing Milroy as minister of resettlement..

1. Remember Milroy's electorate has a lot of Christians (most of whom are fisherfolk)...There were Sinhala fishing villages in Mannar..Milroy's next step is likely to be re-establishing these..As it gives more opportunities to fisherman in Puththalam Milroy's popularity will increase

2. Mannar is SL's only catholic majority district..There wil be less resenment from Mannar tamils to Sinhala catholics comapred to Sinhala Buddhists..

3. The church cannot come out openly against these programs as its their own flock that is being re-settled..If tamil bishops protest these moves there will be a schism and the Sinhala catholic hierarchy will be forced to rethink their views on the so called ethnic issue..

4. When there are Sinhalese (catholics) already living in Mannar it will mask moving in of Sinhalese Buddhists..By connecting Mannar with Puththalam via Wilpattu this process will be further expedited...

Diyasena said...

Re: MR and TNA

I have a feeling that this is a time-buying move..MR keeps discussing with TNA until he gets 4 other MPs from UNP..When dust settles on the UNP leadership battle (give it 1-2 months) there will be crossovers..

TNA seems to have already dropped N-E re-merger..MR is already on record saying there will be no land police powers to the provinces..These powers, especially over state lands in the North are essential for ethnic harmonization (i.e. re-colonization)

exactly my thoughts. i share your CONCERN.

6 wickets down. the two batsmen are building a partnership. so far the partnership is just 5 runs.

lets pray it continues.

when SL was 2 wickets down in the 2nd over in WC1996 final and when ADS and AG were building up the innings i felt the same way.

slow but steady wins the race.

BTW, I appreciate the settlements whole heartedly, for sure.

Yet, it is not yet enough sign for me to believe that there will be fresh settlements of ppl who NEVER LIVED in N/E before. These are "resettling" of IDP of past 30 yrs. We are talking about "Resettling" IDPs of 1000s years, or in fact their descendants.

I am yet to conclude whether there is a well planned move for recolonization. I am yet to see it in either direction. This small resettlement of recent IDPs awakens some hope. Let's hope for the best.

Re: MR vs TNA

MR is a great strategist. It is a possibility that MR is desperate for the 4 seats and once he gets it he will do a SF or DJ to TNA. However, TNA is not at all ethical in agreements anyway. And it will not be easy to get their support based on a pledge. They'll ask for the pound of flesh cooked and served.

Do not fall for words and statements. MR govt will never say literally anything that harms its vote base. We need to see thru the words to the bottomline of the agreements, if any.

The possible disaster is, if we move a step froward towards eelam, and then TNA walks over from it. We'll be compelled to support a more eelam like [than PC] system while other side is calling us sinhala racists and not be bound to anything.

For agreeing with TNA MR won't get anything but 2/3 majority. Unless he maintains the relationship with TNA very well [hence complying for further demands of flesh pounds] he will not only loose the TNA tamil votes, but also his own tamil votes may divide.

Note that starting talks will not earn a great peace lover tag for him, but ending them will always earn the racist tag with higher intensity.

SK,

"We are talking about "Resettling" IDPs of 1000s years, or in fact their descendants."

800 years to be precise.

preferably it must be done by 2015 so that when 800 years come up, we are ready.

it took us fcuking 800 years (at least) to rectify what that mad bugger kalinga magha did. out of that 500 years was wasted by european invaders. that leaves 300 years for us.

non-tamils DIDN'T move out of these areas 800 years ago. that happened around 400 - 5 years ago. the significance of 1215AD is that it created the circumstances for it.

when we talk about SL's GREAT history, we boast about anuradhapura and polonnaruwa eras, not kotte or dambadeniya eras.

that is the level of FORBIDABILITY we need.

all farmers willing to settle in the north should be given 5 acres of land.

when we started the war, advancing from various fronts, one at a time at first, tigers AND BBC made a BIG fuss about it.

but as time went by and when we opened 10 FRONTS, they all went silent.

same with colonization.

we have to open up MULTIPLE FRONTS.

we have the numbers.

In memory of all those killed & those who continue to suffer
Date:
Monday, May 17, 2010
Time:
3:00pm - 5:00pm
Location:
Center for Society and Religion - Maradana (Fathima Church complex)
City/Town:
Maradana, Sri Lanka

Description
This event of meditation and discussion is organised by the Christian Solidarity Movement, in memory of all those who were killed and are still suffering as a result of the bloody 30 year war that plagued our country. Even though the war has been won, those whose lives were lost in the process, should never be forgotten. We should also keep in mind all those who are still languishing in camps, with no homes to return to, no employment, no access to proper facilities, and worst of all...no hope.

So please take some time off your busy schedules to remember all those who died in the winning of this peace.

"I hope that even when this week is taken to mark this occasion of the end of an armed conflict, that it is done sensitively. And that the commemoration is as much for the soldiers who died and who were maimed and lost various other facilities, as for every other Sri Lankan citizen who died and lost. Because all those who died in this war are Sri Lankan. All those who lost their limbs, their loved ones, their homes and various other things are all Sri Lankan. And we need to address this occasion with a sense of grief. It is not a sense of triumphalism, of one over the other, but a sense of grief that our country has had to go through this kind of spell, and perhaps a sense of relief that we are now coming out of it. And unless our attitude changes in that direction, we cannot even think in terms of other processes of reconciliation." - M.A. Sumanthiran

Feel free to circulate/re-post this event as much as you can. Thank you!

[Ananda,

Please give us your thoughts on opening up SLP blog for a think-tank style blog.]

Sam,

I am ready to open up the SLP blog and make it a think tank if the majority of our patriotic bloggers agree.

However, the earlier need we had to organize patriots to counter Sri Lanka's enemies still exists. That need may become more urgent from time to time as events unfold, and the security measures in place at the SLP may still be needed.

Also, the name SriLankaPatriots is aligned too much with the patriotic side, and may be dismissed as such by the wider audience we will want to influence in the future through a think tank.

A more neutral name such as the "Sri Lanka Politics, Defence and Economic Analysis Group", or "Organization for Peace, Development and Security of Sri Lanka" similar to the name proposed by Ninja, may be better.

Setting up a blog, or even a paid website, is not a problem at all; I would be happy to fund it, at least initially.

The problem is getting good insightful articles regularly written for publication, and for people to be willing to appear under their real names as representatives of the think tank, to take our message to the GOSL or other international bodies, and participate in international conferences and the like, as the need arises.

Who among you are willing to shed your pseudonyms and join hands in this effort?

I am, in the pursuit of Sri Lanka's best interest.

Sujeewa Kokawala said...

Ananda;

As you know, I have no issues in exposing my name. :)

BTW, the biggest problem is not forming and presenting ideas. We are fortunate to have great thinkers backed with professional skills and talent. What we lack is the lobbying grounds.

There is no point of forming such ideas, w/o us being able to market them to the ones who has power. [Other alternative is to put our energy and wealth in making them reality. It is a tough ask for us, I believe.]

If you think that "if these ideas are great, govt will surely take them up for their merit", sorry guys it is wrong. SL is not at this place due to lack of ideas, but due to lack of acceptance for them. W/o lobbying through the right political under currents of SL politics, I wonder what we can do.

But I'm in. Trying is better than not.

PS: if we have a lobbying power let's please use it purely for Recolonization. I really wish we have an avenue to get the idea into the heads of ones who matter.

Think Tank concerns and suggestions

1.blogger sites are not attractive and professional.

solution:
Use better templates.
Use wordpress blog.
Buy a domain name and develop a site.

I suggest that we start with a better blogger template and gradually advance to the later stages. My feeling is if the contents are good we will attract a substantial reader base regardless of the appearance of the site, when we see some progress we will take the next step.

2.How to get our message out? And what to send out?

Solutions:
E mail the main article in PDF form.
It is true that most of the important ideas hatch out in discussions, but the main articles are born out of the discussions good example is KB's SL history article. We had a discussion about histiory in the previosue thred then KB distilled those ideas into an article.

I accept the main articles are not the best stuff, but we cannot wait for the perfect, we will find a mechanism to quicly evolve our discussion ideas into a public consumable article, but untill then we need to go with what we have, if we wait for the perfect , it will never happen.

Problem with emailing. I think chain emails are a a good mechanism to strat. When we get the PDF copy we will forward it to our freinds list, and then it will be forwarded from there and so on. Chain emails are the best way to start. When we have more visitors to the site we will make a PDF copy available for downloading or forwading. But untill we get there we need to start with what we have.

We all know influential people, we can forward the main article to these people, and some of them might decide to come and check out the site or even participate in the discussions.

3.Structure of the organization.

Solutions /suggestions.

One site for discussions a seperate site for articles.
Terrific idea, this way we can brainstrom in the discussion site and publish the ideas hatching out from raw discussions.

“Think Tank” sounds european and white.
True , we will use their tools to get out of the mess they put us in gradualy we will evolve to a nationalistic structure. We cannot wait till we develop the perfect structure.

One already exist and Chinthana Parshadaya.
True but what wrong with having another? There are hudreds of NGOs to make theories supporting the anti-nationalistic agenda, lets do the same we will strat hunders of nationalistic think tanks.

4.Catchy name
Sugestions a name without “Patriot” “Unitary” words. A good idea , I suggest we include the term “Nationalistic” “Nationalistic conglomerate” or something.

5.Low frequency of main articles.

Solution: This is true we will start with what we have , and then try to increase the frequency as we go along. What we need is a starting point not the perfect point to start.

The need has never been so great

Anonymous said...

Good stuff Dhesha.

The term "think tank" maybe white, but that is the "universally" accepted terminology whether we like it or not.

We need to fight on that field and gather an international audience as well.

By the way what is the name going to be? It needs to be "universal" sounding and have the peace camp words.

I have a friend (he is "one of us", i.e. a nationalist) who is good with IT and can design a logo of sorts (though not necessary right now and superficial, small details like that makes us look like a professional organisation –other think tanks like IISS & CSIS have such).

Sujeewa Kokawala said...

DeshaP;

Patriot does not have to be a part of the name. We gotta be it in action. But words Peace and Development have a point to make and we shud obviously have them. Natural tendancy is to mark anyone thiks of one SL as a war lover. But we're genuine and pragmatic peace lovers.

Let's save teh word peace from Jay-haan P and Pakaya-Sotti

Articles we need.
If we can get the think tank off the ground some time this month(even after May 18th) we can have this as our first article.

--------

Pol, this is a good idea. I agree this is a good starting point.

------

I would like to suggest a formating point.

The articles we write for our consumption are long. They are good for lengthy discussions.

If we are writing for email distribution they need to be very short, max one page. People check email during work and will not spend more than a miniute on an article.

We have to make it concise, we can provide a link to the site for the detailed article.

here are some articles I wrote during the height of the war for email distribution.

Certainly good to have multiple ones and even hundreds. The problem is if everyone is doing the thinking, who is doing the work?

Having central group of thinkers and the next layer of executors will make things efficient.

I think the UNP is about to split. You can see Sajith and Ravi openly fighting.

The UNP has been the bastion for anti-nationalistic pro western elitists.
Often they surrendered to the demands of tamil and muslim racists. The GOP of SL had no nationalitic plan.

Under Chandrika SLFP was also moving into this frame.

Now MR has revived the nationalistic masses and has been adressing their needs first. There has been a nationalistic revival in SL greather than the 1956 revival. A vast majorityb of Sinhalese are attracted towards SLFP and are abandoning UNP.

UNP has seen this there has been several articles in UNP media understanding this problem.

Sajith , Lakshman Rukman et al want to move the UNP in this direction.

But the problem is the anti-nationalitic elitist who has been runing the UNP doenst want to go there. They realize that if they lose UNP, they loose the last bastion they have.

That is why Ravi et al is fighting the UNP reformers.

Its is interesting to see what will SF do?

Will he align himself with the nationalitic group in UNP? or the anti-nationalitics?

My guess is that the nationalistic groupd dont want fonseka they know who to lead them sleves.

Bu the anti-nationalistic fraction need to hide their true agenda , it if highly possible that they might hire fonseka as their leader.

Fonseka who has lost everything for greed and jealosy will jump to the chance.

Day dreaming is not that good but if we do we better have complete one. IF UNP is ever going to split and end up in number of weak small parties (similar to leftist parties) UPFA/SLFP will become the single dominant political party. In such case its unlikely UPFA remains same and wining all elections with 75%. Likely - UPFA/SLFP split in to two and absorb UNP fractions to each sides and emerge as two strong opposing parties. In such case both such parties may be mostly nationalistic. However such a day dream coming true is unlikely.

Current UNP is mainly about three things. Are you gay? are you evangelist? are you dumb? If you have yes as the answer for any of these questions you are with UNP otherwise not - mostly.

KB,

We need to people to read our articles and covertly convince the need for recolonisation.

Can't say it out loud because it will create a massive counter wave of pressure on the Government to prevent such. Already Toiletnet has gone mad in fear of recolonisation without anything really happening.

We need to work essentially covertly; akin to the way Tamilia does on what is the non-Military front. Must beat them at their own bs, like we did in the war.

To elaborate on the need for being covert we need to look at Suddha. Suddha does nothing himself, he gets lackeys like Tamilia, NGOs and Gonseka to be his mouth, ear, eyes and boots on the ground. Everything is wrapped in rubbish like "democracy" and "human rights" but they bulldoze through anything and anyone regardless if it means achieving their goals and objectives while taking the “moral high ground” with their aforementioned bs and “warm fuzzy feeling” type masks it gives them.

Nisal said...

Pol Sambol, old chap, in my opinion covert action is only good for intelligence operations. If you want to convince a fellow to come around to your position, you have to lay out your facts straight and convince him of their validity. If you try to trick people in policy matters, they resent it and turn against you vehemently. See what happened to those bloody UNP plonkers, tried to trick people into betraying their own country, but the people kicked them to the curb.

Cheers!

Moshe Dyan said...

KB,

in addition to what pol mentioned.

it must go beyond defence. it must be an ALTERNATIVE STRATEGY to hundreds of BS strategies for e.g. development, peace, etc. by various groups.

if we use defence, we cannot directly confront them.

we have to pick a battle that is IMPORTANT to them as well and BEAT THEM.

if we come via the development route we are BOUND to CONFRONT them HEAD ON.

so when it comes to development, our focus is DEVELOPMENT not defence; when it comes to peace, our priority is peace (just like they say); when it comes to global warming, our priority is global warming with SL in it not defence.

this is why we have to move away defence/nationalism/patriotism preferably from having "sri lanka" in the name too.

"Does this mean Government re-orientating itself to a stronger pro-China stance than currently?"

1. IF gosl is happy with its present level of closeness with india, china, USA, etc, it need no think tank.

obviously they are not happy and want it improved.

2. but the bigger reason may be HOW to handle foreign affairs matters. it is shameful if the foreign minister asking a think tank to come up with this!!!

BUT better admit it and correct it than blunder.

3. moving closer to china has BIG risks. i'm not talking about india. india surrenders when china is in SL.

ALL the countries with close relations with china MYSTERIOUSLY end up with LESS DEMOCRACY!!

burma
pakistan
tibet
north korea
singapore
thailand
laos
cambodia
mongolia

that's bcos china DEMANDS 99% policy consistency. IF change of govts mean 2% policy inconsistency, china is against it.

as we know EVERYTHING changes with govt change in SL. peace becomes war and war becomes peace; surrender becomes peace.

even orientation!!!

a SLFP govt is eastern oriented. a UNP govt is western oriented.

if UNP coming to power cannot be avoided, they will ensure the NEW UNP/ETC. is eastern oriented.
