Separatist myth vs. facts: “Sri Lanka was never under unified rule during the time of the Sinhala kings”

Lies and damned lies

After the crushing defeat of LTTE terrorists last year, the overseas supporters of the terrorists have shifted into overdrive in spreading the outragoeous argument that Sri Lanka was never under unified rule during the time of the Sinhala kings. Whether it is LTTE's Tamilnet propaganda outlet last month(1) or supporters of separatism from days gone by, such as Dharini Rajasingham-Senanayake(2), the claim is that British unified the administration of Lanka for the first time in 1833, and, upon granting independence to the inhabitants of the island, handed this unitary state to a Sinhalese controlled government in the year of 1948.

We as patriots and defenders of integrity of our motherland should always be aware of the true facts with regards to the history of Sri Lanka. The history of the ancient period of Sri Lanka is the history of monarchical rule. Here is historian S. Pathmanathan on the subject of the Sinhalese monarchy(3):

An outstanding feature of the Sinhalese monarchy is its almost unbroken continuity lasting for nearly two thousand years and its close connections with Buddhist institutions. No dynastic state has ever had such a continuity and stability in the neighboring Indian subcontinent from where the culture and political ideas of the ancient Sinhalese were mostly derived. Nor could any of the kingdoms in some of the countries of South-East Asia-Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam — where Buddhism exerted a profound influence, lay claim to such a long continuity and historical experience. The long and unbroken continuity and stability in the political and cultural tradition of the Sinhalese kingdom (s) was partly the result of the protection, provided by the island's insularity, the island's manageable territorial dimensions and the physiographic features which permitted control over a major part of it from a single dynastic centre before the thirteenth century. Another contributory factor was probably the absence of social classes able to challenge dynastic authority

To examine this concept of territorial integrity and unified rule by Sinhalese monarchs we need to examine how the Sri Lankan state came to be formed during earliest period of its history, how it evolved, and the nature of it leading up to the arrival of European powers, the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British.

Early State Building

According to Mahavamsa, the story of man in Sri Lanka begins with the arrival there, sometime in the 5th century BC, of Vijaya the legendary founder of the Sinhalese. Beneath this charming exercise in myth-making lurks a kernel of historical truth – the colonization of the island by Indo-Aryan tribes from northern India(4). These settlements were established and developed in several parts of the island from about the fifth century BC. The earliest settlers were those on the west-central coast who pushed inland along the banks of Malvatu Oya and founded a number of riverbank settlements. Their seat of government was Upatissagama where the first ‘Kings’ of the Vijayan dynasty reigned. The settlers on the east coast would have moved inland along the Mahaveli River. Somewhat later, there was an independent band of immigrants who settled in Rohana in the south-east, on the mouth of Valave River. The settlers came in numerous clans or tribes. Among these clans were families of nobility, the Lambakannas, Moriyas, Kalingas, Tarachchas, Balibhojakas and others. By 250 BC, there is evidence of a recognizably literate culture in the main areas of settlements – a contribution of early Indo-Aryan settlers – even though the outlaying communities may have remained pre-literate(5).

According to historian K.M. DeSilva it is not possible to draw a firm conclusion on the process of political evolution that led to the emergence of a kingdom unifying the whole island under its sway. The inscriptional evidence points to a situation where Anuradhapura kingdom, which was founded by Pandukabaya, the third king of the Vijayan dynasty, as merely the strongest, among several in the northern plains and in the Malaya and Rohana regions. This structure had not changed substantially during the rule of Devanampiya Tissa, though he held a consecration ceremony, and assumed the title Devanampiya Tissa maharaja. In spite of this, other rulers on the island did not readily acknowledge his sovereignty. The influence he had in the southern kingdom of Rohana was minimal despite the establishment of the Kingdom at Mahagama by Mahanaga, his brother. This collateral branch of the royal house at Anuradhapura eventually unified Rohana and thereafter established control over the whole island as well. It took them a century and a half to achieve it. The key figure in the unification of the south was Kavantissa, during whose rule the authority of Mahagama began to be felt throughout Rohana. His son and successor Dutthagamani took the offensive against Elara, the Dravidian usurper of the northern kingdom, and established control over the whole island. It was, in fact, the first significant success of centripetalism over centrifugalism in the island history.(6)

The classical Sinhalese kingdom of Anuradhapura

The kingdom of Anuradhapura, the classical Sinhalese kingdom, lasted nearly 1,500 years and the city of Anuradhapura lasted as long as the capital city. It was the capital of the island kingdom since the time of King Dutthagamani (161-137 BC) to the end of the 10th century, longevity unmatched by any other capital city in south Asia. The political history of the kingdom can be divided into three distinct phases or periods.

The first phase is the early Anuradhapura period, the kingdom’s first seven centuries to the reign of Dhatusena in the 5th century, the principle feature of which was the rise and consolidation of power. The middle period saw considerable instability, particularly in the 7th century, and the regular entry of Tamil mercenaries brought to the island by Sinhalese kings to help prop up their power, or by the aspirants to the throne.(7) The late Anuradhapura kingdom saw two centuries of political stability, the 8th and 9th centuries, followed by century of increasing stress and instability as the Sinhalese kingdom struggled to cope with external threats from south Indian kingdoms. Those threats became more formidable in the 10th century and culminated in the absorption, if not the kingdom itself, of at least most of it, under the Chola empire(8), while the great city of Anuradhapura ceased to be the capital city.

The Polonnaruva Kingdom

The expulsion of the invading Cholas from the kingdom happened after a long war of liberation and the restoration of a Sinhalese dynasty on the throne of Sri Lanka under King Vijayabahu I. The return to order and authority became solidified under King Parakramabahu I, the remarkable king who achieved such a tremendous amount of constructive achievement in administration, economic rehabilitation(9), religion and culture. After him the only Polonnaruva king to rule over the whole island was Nissanka Malla, who gave the country a brief decade of order and stability before the speedy and catastrophic break-up of the hydraulic civilization of the dry zone. The collapse of the ancient Sinhalese kingdom of the dry zone is one of the major turning points of Sri Lankan history.(10) The Magha’s invasion and the orgy of destruction in which his cohorts indulged is regarded as the main cause in the disintegration of Sri Lanka’s hydraulic civilization.

The Fragmentation of the Sri Lankan Polity and Arrival of the Portuguese

In the quest for safety against invasion from south India, Polonnaruva was abandoned after Magha’s rule and the next three kings ruled from Dambadeniya. One ruler made Yapahuva his royal residence and another Kurunegala. Sinhalese power again shifted from Kurunegala to the central mountains further to the south, a region that has never in the past been a center of civilization. It was in the 14th century that a kingdom was set up in Gampola on the Mahaveli River as its capital. In the second half of the 14th century, the fortunes of the Sinhalese reached their nadir. The writ of the Gampola kings appears to have run in Rohana as well as the western sea board(11), but for a short period in the 14th century, Jaffna under the Aryacakravartis was the most powerful kingdom on the island. They seemed poised for establishment of Tamil supremacy over Sri Lanka, but were foiled in this by the defeat inflicted by the forces of the Gampola kings in 1380(12).

The Jaffna kingdoms’ expansion southwards had been checked, but the Sinhalese had no reason to believe that this had been halted for good. The capital of the Sinhalese kingdom was moved once more, this time from the mountains to the west coast near Colombo, to Kotte. In 1411, Parakramabahu VI began what was to be a very long reign of fifty-five years founded what came to be called the Kotte kingdom(13). His greatest achievement was to check what seemed to be a well-nigh irreversible trend – the break-up of Sri Lankan polity. He was the first Sinhalese king since the days of Parakramabahu I and Nissanka Malla to bring the whole island under his rule, the last ever to do so. Within forty years of his death, the Kotte kingdom, weakened by internal disputes, faced the formidable challenge of the Portuguese in the first phase of Sri Lanka’s long encounter with western colonialism, an encounter that lasted till the middle of the 20th century.

Conclusion

It is not possible to say that Sri Lanka was ruled as united country for a straight 2500 years. No country in the world can boast of such an achievement. However, neither was Sri Lanka always ruled as multiple polities by multiple sets of kings, as implied by the Tamil separatist movement. Certainly, the territory under the ancient Sinhala kings did not remain constant. Some kings gained territory, others lost parts of it. There were bouts of civil war. Subordinate rulers tried to take advantage of this. But Sri Lanka has been viewed as a unified whole during ancient times. That unity may have been in some cases conceptual more than territorial. It may have included only a formal recognition of the sole consecrated ruler, but this signifies an understanding of the concept of territorial unity. It is up to us, the die-hard patriots, to counter this vile separatist claim whenever and wherever we encounter it.

Ado Thusitha, Danuna has been white vanned! I am deeply concerned why our human rights champions are not crying over his obvious "disappearance".

9/11 suspected master minder caught in Pak in 2003 is to be tried in a "court Marshal". Yes those who preach us about validity of SF's CM, are trying few "pure" civilians in CM. The reason is because many ppl fear taht if they are tried in normal court the courts will be attacked. with fool hardy freedom in America that is a huge and costly concern. Likes of Bloomberg [billionair mayor of NY] and others are lobbying for CM.

But Osama is unchanged. He is making a deadly spell, if the trials are held, he'll attack nevertheless, says he.

We are yet to re-evaluate Osama after Iraq invasion. But he sounds more like a spiritual leader now. I don't see much he can do, yet we do not know.

I like to see how America handles its POW. And how america faces teh threat of terror, and conduct their war against terror.

I hate terrorism anywhere in the world. But that does not stop me enjoying when someone tears off the under pants of the big pundits.

talking about history....

some amazing scientific findings.

Evidence for North Indian origin
A study in 2007 found similar frequencies of the allele HLA-A*02 in sinhalese (7.4%) and North Indian subjects (6.7%).HLA-A*02 is a rare allele which has a relatively high frequency in North Indian populations and is considered to be a novel allele among the North Indian population. This suggests possible North Indian origin of the Sinhalese.[20]

[edit] Relationship to other ethnic groups in Sri Lanka
A study looking at genetic variation of the FUT2 gene in the Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamil population, found similar genetic backgrounds for both ethnic groups, with little genetic flow from other neighbouring Asian population groups.[21] Studies have also found no significant difference with regards to blood group, blood genetic markers and single-nucleotide polymorphism between the Sinhalese and other ethnic groups in Sri Lanka.[22][23][24] Another study has also found "no significant genetic variation among the major ethnic groups in Sri Lanka".[25]. This is further supported by a study which found very similar frequencies of alleles MTHFR 677T, F2 20210A & F5 1691A in South Indian Tamil, Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamil and Moor populations.[18]

[edit] Relationship to East Asians and Roma
The Sinhalese are likely to have received little or no genetic flow from neighboring East or Southeast Asian populations,[26] and have closer affinities to Western Eurasia. This is supported by study looking at protein and blood group loci that suggests the Sinhalese are closer to Iranians and Afghans than to Mongoloids.[27] and comparisons of root and canal morphology of Sri Lankan mandibular molars.[28]

A 2003 Nature study found the Romani language to be most closely related to Sinhalese language.[29] In addition the Romani people and Sinhalese both have a high requency of Haplogroup H (Y-DNA).[30] The Sinhalese and Sinti Roma also have a high frequency of Haplogroup R2 (38% and 53% respectively), as do West Bengalis of which the sinhalese are related to.[31][32] These haplogroups are thought to have arisen 25,000-30,000 YBP.[32][33] Therefore the Sinhalese and Roma may both be related to the same group of paleolithic inhabitants that lived in Central India 25,000 years ago.

[edit] Skin pigmentation
In 2008 a study looked at SLC24A5 polymorphism which accounts for 25-40% of the skin complexion difference in Europeans and Africans[34] and up to 30% of skin colour variation in South asians.[35][36] The study found that the rs1426654 SNP of SLC24A5, which is fixed in European populations[37] and found more commonly in light skinned individuals than dark skinned individuals (49% compared to 10%), has a frequency of ~50% in the Sinhalese and ~30% in Sri Lankan tamils.[36] This allele could have arisen in the sinhalese due to migration or strong selection factors.

Tropical Storm,

An interesting and curious analysis indeed (in DW).

Now I have known you in the www for at least 5 years as a SL Patriot and hence I am more inclined to read what you write here than one who does not know you and might dismiss you as yet another undercover RW/TNA/LTTE/SF MF stooge (and we have quite a few still roaming these blogs).

The bottom line…I would not totally deny or dispute what you have said. However, at the same time I am candid in telling you that it looks like you have missed the “picture in its entirety.”

Let me explain what I mean as follows:

The long drawn out, horrific, war finished in May 2009. So, at this juncture we are not even 1 year into post-war yet.

Now soon as the ground war finished with guns went silent and the prepped claymores were being discovered and disarmed, what did we have? Did we have all calm dawning on our beloved nation? I say an emphatic NO!

Here are the key new offensives, and elements thereof, that MR GOSL faced almost immediately then:

1) The separatist, pro-separatists, just switched gears and went on a concentrated blitz to isolate Sri Lanka via “Human Rights Violations” “War Crimes” “Media Freedom” etc. Now when this happened, the nation was once again put under another “siege” and naturally it allowed the continuation of suspicion and counter-measure security etc. that in my view should have been rid of after May 2009. As such the blame for this squarely rests within the anti-SL traitorous MF clan and not on MR GOSL.

2) The SF fiasco. In my view, this was the most damaging hook-punch to the nation. Here was something that got all Sri Lankans totally by surprise and it came from the left field! Instead of post-war development, here now we found the MR GOSL desperately trying to ward off the falling of their GOSL that had defeated the LTTE MFs. All the signs were truly ominous – that SF, who had gotten into bed with even the LTTE proxy TNA, was out to install a LTTE-friendly regime with limitless money being pumped into that effort from the Tamil separatist influenced west, pro-LTTE NGOs, and even direct contributions from the LTTE MFs themselves (which SF openly said was not wrong to accept!).

Now in my estimation, this battle against this hurriedly-banded-together “reactionary force” took the better part of 6 months on GOSL’s time and effort. The fact that nearly U$600,000 was found in unused, sequentially numbered bills in vaults belonging to SF (via his relatives) was truly a revelation. Now typically who has access to withdrawals of this kind of large sums of money in sequentially numbered, unused bills? Answer: It is usually only a state apparatus would have access to such. When withdrawing money from a retail/commercial bank, it is not possible to get such wads of currency bills for that kind of large sum for the average person. Now does this not tell us of the strange hands at play, strange hands that had ganged up to depose MR GOSL (and install a pro-Tamil separatist regime)?

3) Heightened attack from the “Colombians.” You speak of the Colombians as the “intelligentsia” and the “intellectuals” and I cannot help but cringe at it. Quite a few of my relatives in Colombo belong to this clan so I know well who these people are. You speak of as if their contribution was key in the past to where are today (i.e. LTTE MFs defeated and we are one-nation once again from Kyts to Dondra), but I wholly disagree with that view. Since the time MR formed his GOSL in 2005, these Colombians were out to screw him up and by golly, they almost succeeded doing it a few times!

So who are these Colombians? By interacting with them (no choice for me) and speaking with their friends, here’s my assessment of them: They are:

A. Often businessmen who made enormous profits from the days of JRJ to RW when they nationalized, through rigged and corrupt “fireside sales,” valuable state assets, crown corporations and operations thereof, to their friends and relatives and also UNP loyal party supporters. Of course, during JRJ’s time, it was common knowledge how his ministers, relatives and friends (including his son) were minting in money. Also, especially after RW was kicked out of power, they became sore losers when some of their lucrative but loathsome money-gouging (often from the poor) schemes that RW had bestowed upon them very kindly, fell apart.

B. Often CBK campers who had it real-good when that pathetic cow ran the GOSL. Speaking of corruption now, boy what happened during her tenure from 94-2001 should have been documented for “how to rob a nation” for future crooks-prospects as the schemes were truly masterpieces!

As well, remember CBK and her loyal camp never forgave MR for dethroning the “Bandaranaike” name from the Sinhasanaya and today they are real sore bunch. How sore they are is evident when you remember how CBK first unofficially supported RW in 2005 PE and then later boldly stepped into the foray in January 2010 and asked people to vote for SF!

Of course, these CBK supporters also hate the SA JVP for kabashing the CBK P-TOMS with LTTE and ultimately bringing down the CBK regime, but their hatred of MR is more overpowering as it had become personal (as they always thought of “Rajapakses” as underlings who should always stay there).

C. Members of the “victim industry” or officially known as the NGOs/INGOs. Many of the key and high-ranking local employees of these very prosperous NGOs were employed from within Colombo and boy, did they have it good when the war dragged on for 30 years! I myself have seen the luxury in which these vile parasites had immersed themselves in, and had to contain myself from throwing up.

D. Of course, the anti-Buddhist, Christian/Evangelical movement. These people are traditionally folks who put their faith before their love for their Motherland and during the war, many of them would openly say the solution was to “give LTTE the separate state so we can have peace in Colombo.” Of course, the fact that their religious leaders, including the Bishops of various denominations, would criticize GOSL’s security/ military measures and harp that “peace talks” was the way to go, had a tremendous influence on them.

E. Last but not the least, the “Colombo Tamil” elite. This potent clan also belongs often to either one or many of the types noted in A. C. and D. above. They were always secretly pro-LTTE and to them it was an irreparable loss to see the LTTE die out in a muddy pool!

In short, these Colombians barely contributed to the war-effort (either materially or with their sons being encouraged to join the military), but as soon as the war ended they demanded “overnight prosperity” from MR.

However, what’s encouraging is that a quite a few of them that I spoke to last month when I was in Colombo seem to have some second-thoughts now about their earlier stance and were speaking with more hope than despair. Of course, given the freedom to move anywhere in the Island, many of them had visited hitherto non-accessible places like Jaffna, Trinco and environs, Wilpattu, Madu church, etc. and had seen for themselves the rapid transformation taking place in many places and that might have added to toning-down their rabidly anti-MR rhetoric.

So, now let me wind up by getting down to the brass tacks…

I think your criticism of MR and his GOSL is not totally misplaced. However, if you were to look at the picture in its entirety and consider what promotes those shortcomings, you will see that SL is “still at war” (a fact, as explained above) and that “siege” climate promotes a complementary certain “impunity” climate to permeate within the ruling apparatus.

As such, I say the solution is to first continue to pool our efforts to neutralize this continuing “war-threat” as that way, we will be addressing a root cause. Today MR and his GOSL are being perceived as “the strong government” that SL should have when continuing to fight this insidious enemy (from both within and outside SL (i.e. the pro-LTTE Tamil diaspora is stilly flying LTTE flags in the west) and the attitude of many seems to be “we will support MR and his GOSL as at this stage as we cannot have a weak, pro-separatist government. A weak government at this stage would undo what our sons/brothers/fathers fought for and died.”

not only that. Just think whom to vote for otherwise...

I treasure democracy and like to see an strong opposition. But an opposition of Sri Lankans. Not traitors and foreign agents. Right now opposition is fully infested with latter. At such a point a true Sri Lankan is compelled to vote for the govt.

As I said the next leader is not yet groomed. There is NO competition for it. More competition to stay away from it.

From any party, UPFA, UNP, JVP or even a SF party, if someone stands up for same rights that MR stood for, he will be accepted. Most idiots have taken against the ppl and those rights since they oppose MR and Mr represents them. It is like this. Since you hate the tenant, you the land, lord burn your own house rented to him.

Still there is room for another politician who stands for the ppl's rights.

In elections ppl do foolish things individually But in long term, as a whole ppl are not fools.

(Peoples front of Liberation Tigers)

Interesting to see how US advices us in protecting rights of Lashkar rebels aka freedom fighters,. and what they think of the "civilians" who are involved in the movement

-------------------

<a href=http://www.dailymirror.lk/index.php/news/2670-us-says-lashkar-in-sri-lanka.htmlUS says Lashkar in Sri Lanka

A top US military official says the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba militant group, predominately a threat to India, is fast expanding operations to other South Asian countries including Sri Lanka.

According to a PTI report Admiral Robert Willard, Commander of the US Pacific Command in his testimony before the US Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday has said that that the group is expanding in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives.

"Right now our concern is the movement of Lashkar-e-Toiba, the terrorist group that emanates from Pakistan that was responsible for the Mumbai attacks in India, and specifically their positioning in Bangladesh and Nepal, the Maldives and Sri Lanka," Willard said in response to a question from Senator George Lemieux.

He said the US was working "very closely with the Indians" and within to develop the necessary plans to counter LeT and its movement into the Asia-Pacific region.

Asked specifically if the LeT is a regional threat or a threat to India, Willard said as of now Lashkar is predominately a threat to India.

"And we have certainly knowledge of their influence within the region beyond the countries that I just mentioned. The extent of that influence is what we're taking under study," he said.

Polonnaruwa historic city wall backhoed

By Ishtartha Wellaboda

Heritage and history came under the modern mechanical force of an excavation machine in the historic city of Polonnaruwa, when villagers in the Ranketh Uyana area demolished a 300-metre long stretch of the historic city wall. While the authorities behind this irresponsible act continue to evade the issue, Polonnaruwa Police have arrested four villagers following a complaint made by the Archaeological Department for excavating an archaeological site without obtaining prior permission.
Senior officials at the Archaeological Department, who led investigations into the matter, found out that, villagers from the area had requested the area water supply board for a fresh supply of water.

In turn, the officials at the Water Board had asked the villagers to dig a ditch leading to the village for them to lay the pipelines through, officials of the Polonnaruwa archaeological office added.
“They had made this demand saying that if the villagers would provide them with the ditches leading to their village, they would line them with water pipes to provide water for the village. When the villagers expressed their concern to the local authorities, Pradeshiya Sabha refused to offer any help. However, the local authorities did advise the villagers to dig their pipeline ditch about four metres away from the road limit,” an official at the local archaeological office said.
He also said: “In their desperate moment, a politician in the area has agreed to help these people by providing them with excavation and digging equipment free of charge. The villagers who had little or no experience in measurement had used the backhoe and dug the ditch right across the historic wall.”
According to the Archaeological Department, it is mandatory by law to get a ‘Damage Assessment Report’ from the Archaeological Department before any ground construction work is done in any part of the country. “We accept that it is not practical to obtain such a report for any sort of construction done. But, in a historic city like Polonnaruwa these rules must be followed,” the official said.
When The Nation attempted to contact the Regional Manager of the Water Board in the North Central Province on his mobile phone we were initially told that it was a wrong number and when tried for the second time that it was not the phone of someone attached to the Water Board even before The Nation asked whether it was.

Sri Lanka's president has offered the services of his spiritual healer and personal physician to help injured footballer David Beckham get back on the field within three days.
Eliyantha Lindsay White, 37, President Mahinda Rajapakse's personal physician, told AFP that the former England captain had been invited for treatment involving "faith and ayurveda."
An official at the president's office said it had sent an invitation to Beckham to visit the island for traditional treatment after a string of Indian sports stars claimed they were helped by White.
"I am ready to treat him," White said. "His condition can be easily treated and within three days he will be ….

With a positive result - Beckham back on the team – and with proper PR, we could kick the GTF, British Tamil Forum, CH4, Times and Miliband to the side line.

Just imagine the photo below with David and Victoria, instead of Gambhir and Nehra:

the myth of state sovereignty. unfortunately this is true.

a good read.

if anyone thought development and sovereignty can hold SL together, think again.

they CANNOT keep SL together.

sovereignty is not as strong today as it used to be.

we MUST rely on something else to keep the nation in tact.

that is colonization.

it creates a DEMOCRATIC method of IMPOSING sovereignty across the country. there is no other way.

chinese carmaker buys volvo at a dirty cheap price.

economic superpower position is FAST changing hands!!!

SL has this BS theory, none can match western economic influence on SL. well, its time they accept the numbers.

chinese companies can tackle its main emerging competitor by having an indian company with chinese ownership. that can take care of high performing indian companies.

due to restrictions the cannot work the other way round.

Moshe Dyan said...

i agree with what nihal has to say.

the concept of STATE SOVEREIGNTY is fast losing power (subject to one exception) to PEOPLES' SOVEREIGTY.

when applied to SL, it means there is an INCREASING likelihood of invoking SELF DETERMINATION of a ppl in an area.

this is the reality our leaders fail to understand.

concequences will be catastrophic.

SL must be flexible with SOVEREIGTY. it should now focus more on PEOPLES' SOVEREIGTY and less on STATE SOVEREIGNTY. in other words, SL should use PEOPLES' SOVEREIGTY to boost STATE SOVEREIGNTY.

how can this be done???

COLONIZATION.

yes, colonization is the ONLY way to do it. once the north is adequately colonized, peoples' sovereighty in the north will equal SL sovereigty.

it is as simple as that.

Moshe Dyan said...

ok. the exception.

china, russia.

when did PS start becoming powerful over SS????

at the time the soviet union collapse, eastern europe got divided. elevating PS over SS was beneficial for the west to SPEED UP the break up.

by abkhazia and south ossetia posed a grave risk to the west and as a result the push for PS has reduced since 2008.

for the first time in many years, no new countries were created in 2009!!!!

the tide stopped b4 turning.

although a suprepower, china didn't assert it's ways im the world arena until now. but it is doing so now.

china is forcing the world to rethink the arctic/antarctic agreements, human rights, state sovereigty, nuclear proliferation, cluster bombs/APMs, etc.

although this may take time, it is FAST gathering popularity in the UN.

we must not forget that the UN is ONLY made up of member STATES. excapt a few in the west, many others have disintegration problems. this makes the rethinking very appealing to MOST countries.

but as i said b4, this takes time. but in the meantime, the trend towards PS from SS will lose steam.

this gves enough time for SL to adequately colonize the north so that either way (PS or SS), it's safe!!!

”Sri Lanka recently turned down a US call to deploy Air Mobile troops instead of Special Forces or Commandos alongside US personnel for a joint training exercise in the East. The Sri Lanka Army has asserted that there was no point in involving Air Mobile troops in an exercise designed for elite forces.

The US has called for Air Mobile troops, consequent to a decision not to participate in joint training exercises with elite Special Forces and Commandos, who had played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s triumph over the LTTE. Among the extremely difficult tasks undertaken by the Special Forces and Commandos was hit and run attacks behind enemy lines, which caused chaos among LTTE leaders.”

http://www.island.lk/2010/03/29/news11.html

Why is this even being allowed? Why should we give our knowledge and expertise to them taking into account their obvious sponsoring, support and training given to the LTTE?

Its worrying how knowledge potentially acquired will be put to use, especially considering the track record of the US and its Military in conflict zones. All they are good at is punishing "hostile" civilian populations (calling it "collateral damage") and engaging in false flag operations to break the social fabric and communal cohesion of nations and peoples as best witnessed in Iraq where the so called "sectarian violence" was engineered by the US covert ops teams attacking Sunni's and Shites then getting them to fight each other.

Furthermore the US used chemical weapons in Iraq in 2004 on the civilian population of Fallujah resulting in a massacre. Where the city’s civilian population were told to “evacuate” –as they left thousands were killed, thousands of innocent men were abducted, children abused and women raped. The 50,000 civilians who chose to remain in the city were subject to a massacre as the US carried out a no-bars approach “to break the backs of the resistance” using, chemical weapons and devastating clusters munitions –designed to spread shrapnel not to kill but to disable.

Today children and adults are suffering from defects and cancer as well as disability caused by shrapnel.

The same is occurring in Basra which was subjected to a similar torture in the 1990 war and 2003 war.

Its funny to see how all the kalu-suddhas come out when suddha is challenged and their dark period of terror over are people is exposed and attacked in some form (see here: http://www.island.lk/2010/03/29/opinion4.html).

I always notice this occurrence: Someone condemns suddha a 1000 people come out to defend suddha.

When the british Embassy was (rightfully) graffitied on and had garbage hurled into it, included milliband, there was a plethora of “outrage” by the kalu-suddhas.

When MR suddenly remembered the massacres the British committed in Uva and the use of starvation as a weapon against our people we had a similar plethora of “outrage” from the kalu-suddhas as well as suddha himself over the “good” they supposedly basically the usual white washing. What good did they do exactly? Our people were richer, healthier and had a better quality of life before they arrived. There was none what so ever only death, destruction, despicable massacres and importation of Tamilia into our country but now these tards want to lecture us and the nations and peoples they tortured and still do torture about “human rights”.
Stepping foot on our land was a crime in itself.

"Thousands of Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka are preparing to risk the 5000km voyage to Australian waters as soon as weather conditions improve, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Senior naval sources claim people smugglers will bypass the traditional route through Indonesia or Malaysia in favour of the riskier route direct to Christmas Island.

It is understood senior Sri Lankan naval figures directly warned their Australian counterparts of the looming humanitarian crisis during high-level talks a month ago.

Senior navy sources said they were told several refugee boats set sail for Australia from northeastern Sri Lanka last year but had not been heard from since, the the Daily Telegraph said."

they must not be stopped. they are going for a better life in a rich country. they can NEVER get it in SL even if SL has the highest economic growth rate in the world.

that helps SL too.

if thousands of tamil refugees mean 2,000 (minimum), they will get their families too. if a family has 4 ppl on average, we are talking about 8,000 ppl.

if NE tamil population is 1,600,000; 8,000 is 0.5% (minimum).

population growth rate of SL is around 1.0%. this means NE tamil population growth rate will fall to 1.0% - 0.5% = 0.5%.

voters for tamil racist parties will further reduce as a percentage.

if the number of boat ppl can be somehow increased to 4,000, the 0.5% becomes 0.0%!!!!!

also my boat strategy should be put to good use.

let LTTE terrorists held up as refugees escape by boat. blow up the boats in mid sea.

WITHOUT A TRACE!!!

can save millions for both SL and other countries.

/Jaffna Uni students hold balance of power

Hinting a possible shift in Tamil opinion, the influential Jaffna University Students’ Union (JSUSU), which normally aligns with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), has so far shied away from backing any party or candidates at the April 8 general election, over allegations that the TNA has become a tool of India.

Unlike the present situation, according to sources in Jaffna, in the run-up to the last Presidential election, the Union began actively canvassing for Gen. Sarath Fonseka even before the TNA officially announced its decision to support him.

Committee member of the Union T. Sethuran said, however, that though the union has been officially silent on the election so far, students are primarily divided between the TNA and the All Ceylon Tamil Congress led by Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and some were privately canvassing for those two parties.

Those opposing the TNA are openly levelling the allegation from political platforms that a quartet of Ss ruling the roost in the Alliance namely R. Sambandan, M. Senathiraja, Selvam Adaikalanathan and Suresh Premachandran are acting on the dictates of India with their families settled in the neighbouring country. They also points to Indian influence in the shocking decision to deprive nominations to more than half of its sitting MPs, many of whom were independents nominated by the LTTE.
Secretary of the JSUSU Sri Rangan told The Nation yesterday that despite their misgivings about Indian influence in the TNA, the Union would meet all TNA leaders and its candidates tomorrow morning at the Jaffna University. The Union would be represented at these discussions by each Faculty Union President and Secretary and office bearers of the main Union JSUSU. This would be followed by a meeting with the candidates and leaders of the All Ceylon Tamil Congress.

He said the union hoped to brief the media after the two meetings on its possible stand at the election.

According to JSUSU sources it is now a close fight in Jaffna between the ACTC and TNA with each likely to get three seats, while the EPDP, the UNF and the newly formed Tamil Liberation Alliance of TNA dissidents N. Srikantha and M.K. Sivajilingam getting one each.
The two candidates who came first and second at the 2004 general election Selvarajah Kajendran and Pathmini Sithamparanathan are this time contesting from the ACTC after they too were dropped by the TNA. Kajendran was the President of JSUSU in 2001/2002.

According to Jaffna Arts Faculty Students Union office bearer N. Raviraj, a very popular economics lecturer Sinnaturai Varatharajan contesting from the ACTC is also likely to attract plenty of student votes./

It is understood that the main reason behind the so called ‘ethnic conflict’ in SL is tamil racism and this tamil racism was designed, developed, planted and carried out by English speaking, well educated, mostly Christian, elite tamil class. And in todays context UoJ and main Schools in Jaffna plays the role for future dream separate tamil only country.

Similar to universities in south UoJ too have no influence to election results in terms of numbers. However, university youth have potential in playing key roles in political front both as getting used by others and/or shaping views in public. Specially university lecturers, some with NGO funds are involved.

Even in universities in south its true that majority do not attach to two main parties in politics instead they work for JVP via unions. This is a result of complex process where JVP exploit rural students lack of knowledge, ragging, brain washing etc. In contrast UoJ students by their own choice do not involve with UNP/UPFA politics and not even JVP but some thing close to TNA ideology or more clearly ideology of LTTE political wing. (Oh how is tamil selvan doing..? still smiling..?)

I see some thing wrong here.. some thing bad.. but don’t know how to fix.. This is some thing political planners (PCR-JHU, WW-JNP, BR-UPFA) need to pay attention…

The advantage of "warning" means we can implement your earlier destruction of boats mid sea idea, this way Oz expects less and we can "send away" more.

But i do not think this idiot Government understands. It thinks saving Tamil lives and doing "good things" gets it applause from Tamils and the West, yet we all saw the results of this approach last year –up to now, NOTHING. Government also thinks it can stupidly get Tamil votes. If the boot was on the other foot Tamils would not be thinking about petty votes. They would have wiped out Sinhalese long ago without a single moment of hesitation or remorse –heck when the boot was not on the other foot they tried too.

We should encourage EVEN MORE movement.

The smugglers who do the transporting are SLs, so should be easy to be paid by "other smugglers" to take these refugees and ditch them in the sea, come back to take relatives and ditch them in the sea as well.

Smugglers can become very rich too (they get money from Tamilia & for ditching them in the sea) while also making Tamilia in SL very indebted as they will have to pay for the tips which involves "selling" whatever property/land they maybe clinging onto in SL + what money their relatives may have. Increased poverty = more reason for them to migrate.

To make sure the smugglers keep their traps shut we can always white van them.

50/50 approach is best -good to send some of these parasites to Australia anyway.

A way to bring illegal migrants out of the woodwork may be to offer an amnesty. The package could include a cash incentive and free repatriation. What do you guys think? I know IOM has done something like this elsewhere, and
maybe they still do. Of course there is a danger people may want to come in just to get the cash incentive.

Here is something I came across recently, though it may not be totally true - but it is an interesting concept i.e. getting another country to do R&D with the promise of purchasing the developed product!

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1159036.html

The third thing I want to mention is on rice cultivation! I've read/heard on more than occasion that farmers horde their rice produce in order to get a good price. If it is true, it is worth discussing very much.

Moshe Dyan said...

goolge,

thanks for that interesting article.

but i think iron dorm was for israel. to protect it from hezballah rocket attacks that are getting longer in ranger and higher in number (in stock). it still needs to be developed further bcos it hasn't met all expectations.

but for singapore it is OK.

this is one way israeli research companies work.

even if a product does not 100% meet local requirement, it may find a good export market. so the research expenses are not wasted in any way.

re: repatriation of illegal immigrants in SL

it may work in some cases if our borders are tight now. but this is not the case, still. they may get the cash, go home free of charge and come back!!

How Fonseka Plan to fight corruption

With more revelations to come, there is little doubt, the image of retired Gen. Fonseka as a soldier who took to politics to battle corruption is fast receding. Denials by him of involvement by family members have been proved wrong and he has to answer questions on how he inherited foreign funds. CID detectives probing the deposits of more than Rs 75 million (including US $ 527,000) are to question him after revelations that he was the recipient.

Thus, the detectives have established one fact. It was Gen. (retd.) Fonseka and his campaign staff who had disbursed the funds received.

According to a CID source, one of the lists found in computers used at the Rajakeeya Mawatha office, had a list of moneys paid out by S.H.A. de Silva, who was Campaign Manager and Personal Assistant to Gen. (retd.) Fonseka. It later turned out that de Silva was a convicted criminal.

The list of payments made by De Silva includes Rs 72 million to two retired Major Generals.

Others included a journalist, who once served the state media. A close associate of retired Gen. Fonseka, he is listed as receiving sums amounting to over Rs 3.4 million.

A close family member received Rs 8.8 million and a campaign staffer of the UNP Rs 10 million.

Other payments listed include Rs 24.7 million to a woman described as S.H.A. de Silva's girl friend, campaign expenses from November to December 2009 - Rs 9.9 million, conduct of a news conference Rs 75,000 and purchase of computers reportedly worth Rs 300,000.

Google I disagree.

You idea will only encourage more immigration into the country.
What do you mean by offering amnesty? Amnesty for what? Illegally entering our country? Forget it.
Its best to keep all these illegals in the woodwork rather than letting them out, much easier to deal with them that way.

Moshe I do not think the Government gets it at all.

They want to keep these people in SL and keep Australia/West happy to “improve SLs image”, win friends and other bs like that. It will never happen. These countries will always be against us, as will Tamilia. But rather than cleverly sorting out the problem, i.e. colonisation and encouragement of Tamilia out of SL they want to keep Tamilia in SL and promise them a “better future” even if we give them one they will still kill us when they get the chance, so its best to send them off out of the country to a “better future” which already exists.

Most Sinhalese are blinded by the foolish notion that Tamils are all innocent snuggle bunnies mislead by a wolf. The truth is they are ALL vicious wolves who want to subjugate the Sinhala, with the pack honchos leading the way because it is in the packs interests to do so. If the pack honchos do not play ball then they will be ostracised and killed –so it is also in the pack honchos interests to fulfil this goal to the best of their ability as pack honchos safety is also on the line. If you do not believe me just see how Tamils always vote for the TNA (and their previous incarnations).

Sinhalese must realise that this propaganda that “Tamils are innocent” stupidly spread by Sinhalese themselves is self-defeating and disadvantages as it is also indicts Sinhalese as evil and white washes Tamil crimes against us. It has got to stop.

"BTW what do you think about the sovereignty issue????

our pundits argue SL soverigty is immune from all sorts of attacks. (this is only the desired position not the actual position).

but now we know fcuking well that it is not so. otherwise ban ki cannot appoint an expert panel."

SL being geographically, economically and population wise small it is seen as a soft easy target to attack. Furthermore the weak mentality and lack of backbones in our people coupled with servility to suddha makes it even more easier to attack and get away with without a response.

So we will always be under attack in some form until our people get tough and strengthen the economy. Colonisation is the best way to improve the economy AND prevent loss of sovereignty/territory as you pointed out Moshe.

Also encouraging Tamilia movement out of SL helps greatly. We should not just send them to Australia, but Canada and Europe as well who are far more relaxed with immigration controls. We can send more to Europea and not worry about any ruckus against SL –but have to hurry as the white populations in the West want immigration decreases, so we have to send Tamilia NOW. Just stuff them on boats to Italy, if Somalia pirates get them we can blame the "boat disappearnces in mid sea" on the pirates too.

india tried hard to bypass pakistan and team up with afghanistan but the afghans prefer china.

now china is already moving into afghanistan without dropping a drop of blood and not valuing SU sacrifices AT ALL!!!

china is planning for the eventuality of US troops pulling out.

they sure know how to win support.

i'm sure india is shitting now. iran is a little bit pro-china. cinese investments are expected to rise in iraq as well. with afghanistan and pakistan teaming up with china on GEOPOLITICAL STRATEGIC affairs, chinese influence reaches the middle east at a fcuking fast speed!!!

what will happen to "super powers" over which china stretches westwards?????

they get isolated, bypassed, ignored.

when the southern frontier is ALSO closed for india, china can force india to toe the line or...............

SL being the only "independant" nation here, focus will be on SL too.

“on a lighter note......

if my kidney business is allowed to operate at the same time, i can take care of tamil madu illegal immigrants AT NO COST to the govt. it will be a break-even operation. the little profit goes to pay for/entertain human rights buggers!!!

ppl without kidnies will get them at a reasonable price while tamil madu illegal immigrants will be kept out at the same time.

all countries do nasty things to save their national interests.

for instance australia sold wheat to saddam hussein when there was an economic embargo!! (not to mention the embargo itself was draconian).”

We need to create our own NGO types to destroy and discredit these HR bs types ramblings. Best way to do it:

Infiltrate the NGOs -gather information on their nefarious activities (funding sources, projects, anti-SL activities).

Infiltrate the NGOs -commit crimes, murders etc in their name which will then humiliate the NGOs and their bogus HR preaching

Make our own separate HR NGOs –one set who are pro-SL and attack the bogus foreign funded ones. Another set who do crimes, murders (murder against anti-SL elements, other NGOs to show infighting for money etc) further compacting the humiliation & discrediting the “real” NGOs get.

Basically we need massive false flag operations. For it work well the people doing the FF operations need “be caught” and jailed etc, while they/their families are secretly paid handsomely and they can live like Gonseka in “prison”. After the heat dies down let them out –or give them small sentences like 2 years then let them out in 6.

When Rajapaksa won the presidency less than five years ago, the existence of the ethnic problem and the need for a political solution were deemed axiomatic truths. Only a cabal of Sinhala supremacists, vociferous but politically negligible, occupying the margins of Lankan polity and society, refused to accept these twin realities. When President Rajapaksa repeatedly stated his disbelief in the existence of an ethnic problem, he was positioning himself within this Sinhala supremacist space. Concrete actions accompanied his ideological shift. The unitary state was declared unalterable. The homeland concept was rejected. The north-east was de-merged, sans a referendum. Sinhala extremist discourse became de rigueur, again. Gradually, almost insensibly, Sinhala supremacism began to assume a new gravitas, until it possessed the political heights and permeated the southern society.

All right chaps, time to take a bow. We have made life for this shameless traitorous tart Tisaranee Gunasekara and all her ilk miserable. New 'reality ' is a bloody disaster for these traitors.

"Basically we need massive false flag operations."

yes.

MOST NGOs operating in SL are political thugs.

these idiots should be TAXED. that will be free tax money for the govt without losing any votes!!! charge them for laison with govt entities/services too.

similarly ALL media institutions should be taxed with a new media tax. money collected this way should go to train patriotic mediamen/women. for proven patriotic media, a tax REFUND should be offered!!! which will be called the peace, harmony and unity promotion tax refund.

lol!

this way we can create financial incentives for media to be patriotic. those that are not patriotic will either,

1. go bankrupt, or,
2. pay high taxes for patriotic media.
(second outcome preferred).

in other words, the cost of news/punnakku for anti-SL fellows will be high. without their daily punnakku dose, they might either perish or leave the country.

pro-LTTE non-complying foreign hosted media may be blocked. anyway foreign media are not going to the grassroots level. so most of those can be disregarded.

Seeing our history all the way to the oppression of our nation and how our people fought for our country is truly awe inspiring. It also reveals the despicable role of traitors in bringing defeat upon us when total victory was within our grasp

Our history and the heroic acts of leaders long gone MUST be taught in schools. That alone will inoculate patriotism into the younger generation who do not have much of a clue who they are, it also restricts the growth of future traitors.

However that does not mean they will not try and exact revenge for their frustrations. TG types and other Colombians will defecate on us internationally, loyally doing what their pigment deficient masters desire of them.

agree.

my take on this is different.

first lets do colonization. no need for constitution changes for this.

then lets go for 2/3rds. it is even easier to get 2/3rds then. and mathematically possible.

at first newly colonized ppl would have two votes!!!! one vote from their native district. another from vanni, etc.

lets put the horse b4 the cart.

UPFA MUST win the election. it has a lot to do b4 it deserves 2/3rds. do the right thing and 2/3rds is simple.

Moshe,

It was the British & other suddhas who created the TE nonsense in the first place because they wanted to subjugate us.

They pampered TamilNadu a great deal for their servility and loyalty.
It was because of them Tamilia became a big problem for us today.

Our people did the right thing fighting for our nation. Who would sit around and let those mass murdering tards destroy our heritage and people without a fight? Had we not fought the British we would be history-less, nation-less nobodies (like Tamilia are today) over run by Tamil madu. Because our people fought back we managed to hold onto our identity and what is rightfully ours –unlike Tamilia in SL who’s identity was created by the British and struggle to prove who they are (hence why they attack us). For Tamilia to have any meaning they must deny us ours.

Our history did not begin in 1505.
Had we not fought the British 1505 would be are starting point -as it is or Tamilia.
They would have turned us into coolies like they did to Tamilia.

We would be denying our history, are identity and what are ancestors gave us. The British (if we fought them or not) would have replaced who we are with their own twisted version (see Colombian mentality).

All this now, everything we are fighting for now, discussing now, would be meaningless if we surrendered without a fight back then, without resisting in any form and letting them have there way.

KB, pol,

this is going to be a very unpopular position i'm taking.

the following are facts.

1. ALL those who invaded SL from tamil madu, portugal, the netherlands and UK are MFs and should be cursed. they destroyed our country and ruined our glory.

2. they used divide and rule. it created most of the havoc SL face today.

however, british retards didn't try to wipe us out. of course they exploited our lands, brought ppl from tamil madu, etc. we cannot expect anything else from invaders.

when we attacked them they displayed their TOTAL BARBARIANISM to us.

but our resistance achieved NOTHING.

had we not fought the british,

1. we would have 100,000 paddy fields in uva

2. thousands of lives would have been saved.

3. brits would not have brought cruel indian slave armies here.

4. would not promoted tamil madu buggers in SL. they were promoted bcos they recycled brits' excreta. we cannot do that but could have least maintained a better relationship.

an invader could have been much nastier than this.

1. brits gave independance to ONE country as opposed to 3.

2. ponna-ambalam's racist crap was rejected by brits.

3. esablished democracy in 1931

4. started colonizing trinco

5. promoted sinhala buddhist education/religious work

are there any good of tamil elamists??? no. even their carcasses are not good for our earth.

my position is this.

british, etc. retards were barbarians but MUCH BETTER than tamil elamists.

even b4 portuguese came to SL there were tamil separatists.

a somewhat large military. may be smaller.

it's not just the chechnyan, etc. "nationalism" that is driving this. it is the world wide islamic fundamentalist terror network that is driving this.

unlike tamil terrorism which was essentially mono-ethnic, islamic terror cuts across many ethnicities.

almost 90% of all terror groups are islamic and they co-operate with each other.

this threat is not there for SL bcos our tamil elam cooliers are HIGHLY racist and cannot co-operate with anyone. the last thing they want is to have strong links with islamic terrorists now!!!

MR is "afraid" of India or loves to suck up to them and this factor maybe at work or MR is still hunting for Tamil votes like an idiot. Hope UPFA and its allies in North and East get nothing.

This Government has still not fully grasped the situation it is in nor seems to care much either. MR's "Beckham come to SL" crap just displays a high level of stupidity. Let me guess he wants a photo opportunity? No leader devalues themselves so pathetically like this. Every low life Ambassador has a meeting with the President, is it any wonder they act like Viceroys? This kind of "friendly-ness" is not needed, how many damn lessons does the Government need till it learns?

Just watch no colonisation and we will have an eelam-referendum in SL one way or another (2016 GE results most likely used but they will happily use 2010 results) and we will have eelam whether we like it or not. By the time the Government realises it is too late. Total set of morons never pro-active and still DO NOT GET the precarious situation they are in.

Moshe Dyan said...

”Is it just me or is the government quiet about Ranil's dismantling army camps and TNA's re-merger calls?”

a good observation.

may be janaka perera gave a solution. have colonized villages in the way to 1-4 base. that will ensure continued SLA presence and we won't lose sight.

colonization necessitates keeping SLA (though may be reduced) permanantly in north east.

Moshe,

It was the rebellions of 1818 and 1848, which prompted the change of dealing with the Sinhalese in a decent manner in the 20th centuries..They knew unlike tamizh the Sinhalse will not be a completly subservient group..

1818 was necessary..Yes it extracted a heavy toll but if they didn't, the eelam map today would be much larger..Unlike 1848, which was a rebellion against heavy taxes, 1818 was one of national identity..The biased British treatment of minorites had already started by 1818 and was a cause not a result of the rebellion..If we didn't resist the invader, we might have ended up like the Filipinos (a race that suck up to Western culture but looked at indisdain by the white people)..

The rebellion of 1848, actaully achieved some goals..
1. Some of the unfair taxes were abolished..
2. The governor was recalled..
3. The official possession of the tooth relic was returned to the Asgiriya and Malwathu chapters
4. Economic reforms (i.e. renovations of tanks) were brought about to reinstate the lifestyle for Sinhalese..

Remember I asked you the question about the Pera graduate from Ananda, who was an ace hockey player. I was referring to Dr. Sunil J. Wimalawansa. Ananda-USA responded saying that he knows of an old Anandian, who could scythe the neck of a man with the hockey stick. Even then I could not pin point.

Patriots,

I have been farming in my backgarden here in the US the last few days, trying to recreate a part of my memories gathered climbing trees and picking fruits with my seven brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka!

I planted two varieties of amba, two varieties of pera, a passion fruit vine, two varieties of lemons, two varieties of orange, one of lime, and one of banana. These are all about 4 feet tall dwarf plants that are already flowering; they should bear fruits in the August to December time frame this year!

I had planted the more easily available fruits (in California) like apples, pears, cherries, apricots and cherries some time ago; they bear fruit every season.

I also planted a vegetable and herb garden, including long maakaral and small chinese snowpea beans, bitter gourd, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, eggplant, okra and pepper, which are among my favorite vegetables. Among the herbs I planted, only coriander and parsley are familiar to Sri Lankans. Except for some tomato and pepper plants, I grew all of the vegetable plants in nursery beds from seed available in packets.

When I was a boy in Sri Lanka, our garden had many sapodilla trees, several types of amba and pera, rathu and pini jambu, vela and waraka kos, two types of aatha, ambarella, annasi, and ambul, suwandel and kolikuttu kehel, nelli, bilin, lime, orange, woodapple, and olive trees among others. Many elders in my family had contributed to planting some of these trees, when we children were still only concepts in their dynastic dreams.

My mother taught us how to grow plants from seeds, and how to bud and graft cuttings from fruit plants, when we were kids .. some barely able to walk .. right in the middle of suburban Colombo! From dawn to dusk every other weekend was spent laboring in the garden, sustained by breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner of our favorite foods. All of us kids labored mightily under my mother's stern yet joyous guidance: planting, weeding, fertilizing, and harvesting vegetables, fruits and flowers .. it was SOOO MUCH FUN. These things inculcated a love of all things natural in us that has shaped our lives, and endowed within us a joyous outlook that will endure as long as we do.

Ananda-USA said...

In Praise of Gardening

.....continued ...

All Sri Lankan children should have some exposure to this kind of upbringing and frolicking in the EARTH and SOIL of Lanka, for not only is it extremely educational .. prompting the questions of how and why in their formative years .. but also embedding within them a love of the land that gives them life .. germinating and nurturing feelings and visions in the deepest recesses of their young and fertile minds .. that later ripen and crystallize into unbridled PATRIOTISM for the land of their birth.

To truly imbibe PATRIOTISM for ones own motherland, you must revel in its EARTH, its DIRT and its SOIL, wallow in the MUD of its RICE FIELDS, frolic in its WATERS, wade in its STREAMS and RIVERS, play on its BEACHES and its SEAS, breathe its AIR, climb its TREES, its MOUNTAINS and its PEAKS.

They should also gaze in fascination upon its animals, its brightly plumed birds flitting among the branches or winging their way home in squadrons at sunset. They must see its fish hauled up on the beaches by fishermen, to be caught by hand, or trapped in one's sarong in the Menik Ganga, or darting back and forth in the ditches bringing water to the paddies.

They must listen to the trumpeting elephants, to the bellowing of the water buffalo, to the grunting of the leopard. Who has not had his thala guli bag snatched by a monkey at the Dambulla cave temple? Who has not fed a banana to the elephant on its way to the temple, or trampled upon its dung with bare feet after it has passed to horror of one's parents? Who has not caught a huuna at home and had it escape one's grasp by breaking its tail off and running? Who has not seen a garandiya, or a kabaragoya, slither across the garden, or poked a green snake with a stick and watched in fascination as it changed its color to red? Who has not collected crabs on the beach or among the rocks at the beach and let them go?

Who has not done a few of these favorite things in Lanka? Who?

Free media at work Part 2:

"Balasuriya wants to know why I do not show the same interest that I displayed in the past in investigating matters. My response to his question is that we did those things voluntarily and free of charge. At that time, there was no group receiving salaries, enjoying various privileges and facilities, to perform this duty. But today, as there is a salaried and privileged group which includes Sanath Balasuriya to do the job, we remain silent observing how they do these things for a huge salary which we did free of charge in the past.

The funds provided to the Free Media Movement to investigate the disappearance of people like Prageeth and sustain their families have now been suspended by the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) as these funds have been misused and squandered by Sanath Balasuriya and his gang for their personal benefit. Rs. 8.5 million was allocated by the SLPI to the Free Media Movement for the protection of independent journalists in 2008. This amount was scheduled to be released in four installments. The first installment of Rs. 2,132,062.25 was released on 29 May 2008. A similar amount was provided as the second installment on 6th August 2008. The SLPI requested the submission of details of disbursements to release the third installment. After taking a long time, this gang was able to account for only an amount of Rs. 1,980,445.16. They were unable to account for the balance amount of Rs. 2,283,679.34. The SLPI has observed that most of the receipts submitted to cover expenses were unacceptable and bogus. Following this, the SLPI cancelled its agreement with the Free Media Movement and requested the return of Rs. 2,283,679.34 which had not been accounted for. Up to now they have failed to return this money. (See the second part of article tomorrow for more details - Ed) Was this not the real reason why Sanath Balasuriya and others fled the country? There had been real threats to some members of this gang. But they continued to live in the country. It was only after the SLPI commenced an internal audit in respect of the accounts of the Free Media Movement and raised questions that this gang fled the country. The person in charge of the funds, who is not a journalist, also fled the country about two weeks ago.

Now I would like to pose the following questions to Sanath Balasuriya. What is the amount you have obtained personally from this fund for your safe house, your meals and drinks, and as travelling expenses? What is the amount you have not yet accounted for after receiving money from this fund? Let us forget for a moment the large scale fraud that took place in the Free Media Movement—The Movement received Rs. 26 million for various projects. Can we condone the misuse of funds given to the Free Media Movement to look after the interests of people like Prageeth and sustain the families of disappeared journalists?

Can Balasooriya let us know how much he has received from various projects of the Free Media Movement, in addition to the salary he received from Lake House without doing any work?

Free media at work Part 3:

"Poddala Jayantha

I have written before about the misleading report concerning the Police raid on Poddala Jayantha’s house. Sanath Balasuriya was also a party to this deception. This Police raid took place in the night. Poddala really got frightened and shouted for help. When the neighbours gathered around the house, the police party left. The Police Inspector in charge of this search told Poddala that it was a mistake and told him the reasons that had led to the search. Poddala accepted the Inspector’s explanation. He even told his friends that it had really been a mistake. He said so even to some of his friends in the Ravaya.

But Balasooriya and those in the Free Media Movement wanted to make it sensational news both locally and internationally. Accordingly, they issued a statement that an attempt made by the Police to abduct Poddala Jayantha, the Secretary of the Professional Journalists’ Association and a prominent activist of the Free Media Movement has been prevented by the timely intervention of the people of the area. Poddala also opted to subscribe to this blatant lie. What they wanted was to show the world that the suppression of media freedom in Sri Lanka was gathering momentum. They did not want to let this opportunity pass, which would help justify their claim. The growth of the quantum of foreign aid they received was dependant on the degree of suppression of media freedom.

How come our stupid media does not focus on this?

We need to draw attention to this as it is important in projecting the correct image to the world at large (whether they listen and accept it is a different issue) as well as OUR OWN PEOPLE.

"Former Editor Sunday Observer H.L.D. Mahindapala whose paper was read by Ramani Samarasinghe, noted that the denigration of the Sinhala Buddhist has been a huge institutionalized industry in academic, NGO, Christian and pro-separatist lobbies. This conglomerate of lobbies, according to the paper, has been merely recycling the political agenda of the Vadukkodai Resolution of 1976 which laid down the parameters of their separatist goals.

The main target of the resolution was to demonize Sri Lanka’s South as the enemies of the Tamils and endorse violence to achieve their separatist objective.

Lieutenant-Colonel (Retd) Anil Amarasekara, former Commanding Officer of the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment from 1990 to 1992 and the Officer Commanding Troops at Anuradhapura in 1995 presented a paper on ‘Human conflict with relation to land acquisition.’

In his presentation he warned the government to exercise extreme caution in implementing resettlement of people in the North. In this context he recalled that before the LTTE took control of the Northern Province, an Army Task Force for Illicit Immigration (TAFII) was in operation to prevent illicit immigration from Tamil Nadu. But since the State lost control of the province 30 years ago there was no way of knowing how many people from Tamil Nadu had illegally entered the island from South India.

Asked Lt. Col. Amarasekera:

“How then is the government going to establish who is a citizen and who is not when resettling internally displaced people in the Northern Province? I am made to understand that the accepted procedure for those who have lost their National Identity Cards is to obtain an affidavit from the Grama Niladari confirming residency in his division. On the strength of such an affidavit a new identity card is issued. This may be the only country in the world where citizenship can be thus established on an affidavit from a single government employee”

Amarasekara observed that during the three-decades the LTTE dominated most of the Northern Province it was they who alienated land to the people and not the Sri Lanka Government. Most of these lands had been distributed among the so-called Maveer (Great Heroes) families. Hence he stressed the need for the authorities to think twice before implementing a land alienation policy that would virtually amount to unknowingly paving the way for LTTE’s Tamil Eelam which the Security Forces fought so hard to destroy and sacrificed their life and limb in the process.

The lieutenant colonel also recalled a visit to Manik Farm on two occasions last year.

“I was very surprised to meet several people of Indian Tamil origin from the older generation who spoke good Sinhala. When questioned with regard to their ability to converse so fluently in the language, they revealed they were plantation Tamils who had lived at one point of time in the hill country among Sinhala people. I realized that many of them very likely are those who earlier were to be repatriated to India under the Sirima- Shastri Pact.

They were subsequently resettled in the Mullaittivu and Kilinochchi districts on the sly after the 1983 ethnic riots by Redd Barna and other International Non-Governmental Organizations in an effort to link the Northern Province to the Eastern Province with the idea of creating a land mass exclusively inhabited by Tamils. This was a surreptitious effort to establish a Tamil homeland in the North and East and thereby bisect and destabilize our country.”

2010-03-30 12:47:21

The former Chief Minister of the northeastern provincial council Vartharajah Perumal has returned to the country from India to join the election campaign of the EPRLF.

Mr.Perumal who fled the country in 1990 will visit Jaffna tomorrow to begin the campaign.

On March 1, 1990, the North-East Provincial Council met and moved a five-page resolution converting the North-Eastern Provincial Council into a constituent state assembly for the purpose of drafting a constitution for the Eelam Democratic Republic, which would take effect on March 1, 1990, if the Sri Lankan government failed to implement a charter of 19 demands to be submitted by the EPRLF on February 25.

On this day the central committee of the EPRLF issued a 19-point charter forwarding "the conditions that had to be satisfied for the Eelam Tamils to exercise their right of self–determination.

the otherside of the EPRLF story is also interesting.

1. that is why RAW trained vardaraja is coming back

2. TNA expelled anti-indian guys. they want tamil elam to be independant of tamil madu. sambandan does not mind anything as long as NE is split from SL.

3. interesting to hear what ASS (ananda singari) has to say. he is pro-indian but pro tamil elam too.

4. what if india cannot have it its way politically???? i think india will again create another LTTE.

5. based on these developments, i think it is india that blocks COLONIZATION.

our foolish president finds it AMAZING!! indian workers everywhere. india doing development projects (ONLY in NE). "india is my mother" attitude. "i will not let anyone harm india" attitude. what about SL????

the fact is india loves SL, but loves itself more. unfortunately for SL, indian interests clash with SL interests after the LTTE is gone. so naturally india wants it her way. but we should WANT it our way. first we should decide that. then let's decide how best to do it.

but there is a remote possibility MR is planning for something else. BS india until we have enough chinece presence to deter india.

JWick,

Welcome to the SLDF Blog! Long time, no see, brother .. nice to hear from you again!

Indeed we were E-Fac batchmates in the graduating class of 1969!

I was an ME who did Electrical Power & Electrical Machines as the minor subject area. I then completed the remaining final year EE subjects in 1970, when I was serving as an ME Instructor at the E-Fac.

JWick, do you remember the paddy field in front of the workshops that ALL E-Fac students .. female and male .. and Faculty staff members, planted? I remember Professors EOE Pereira, Mahalingam, Chinnappa, Jayatilleke and Gunawardena, among others, wading knee deep in the mud with us, and eating the lunch packets! It was GREAT FUN!

For those who don't know, there was a shortage of imported foods in Sri Lanka then, and food items were rationed. The Govt encouraged the cultivation of all available land with food crops.

That paddy field produced a record harvest from the high yield hybrid rice we planted, albeit with loads of fertilizer and water pumped into and out of the field using valuable electricity. I don't know how cost effective that rice growing operation was, but it was certainly of immense motivational value to us!

Since then, new laboratory buildings have been built at the location of that memorable paddy field.

Cheers!

>Sri Lanka's forgotten massacreFor one rural village in Sri Lanka, the scars of the 30-year civil war will not be easily overcome.

On 15 October 1992, the small fishing village of Palliyathidal became the scene of one of the worst massacres suffered by any community during the 30 year Sri Lankan civil war.

In just four hours, eyewitnesses in the village say, some 285 men, women and children, around a third of the population, were killed by a 1,000 strong force of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), also known as the Tamil Tigers.

At the time, the Sri Lankan military stated that at least 160 people were killed by some 150 attackers.

'We saw the Tamil Tigers armed with guns and knives (machetes). I heard them say 'we will kill everyone and then celebrate in your mosque'," says Pitchathambi Ishabdeen, the local shopkeeper.

"I was lying among six bodies. Lying in their blood."

Forgotten massacre
Everyone was buried together - parts of pregnant women, parts of bodies and children.
Wellalebbe Mudalian, village leader

The killing in the village known by Tamils as Palliyathidal (Palliyagodella by the Sinhalese) has been largely forgotten; no one remembers a visit from any journalist.

After the massacre, the village was abandoned for three years and a road reaching it was not built until more than decade later. It appears on few maps in Sri Lanka.

The conflict, which ended with the defeat of the Tamil Tigers more two months ago, has been portrayed mainly as a fight between Tamil separatists and the Sinhalese majority in control of the government.

All but 40 of the victims of the Palliyathidal massacre were Muslim; the rest were Sinhalese.

All three of the main ethnic groups in Sri Lanka - Tamil, Sinhalese and Muslim - have been victim of atrocities in a conflict which has claimed an estimated 70,000 lives.

In 1992, the village stood in the way of the Tamil Tigers' brutal campaign to ethnically cleanse parts of northern and eastern Sri Lanka which they wanted as part of their state of Tamil Eelam.

Despite decades of close relations between Muslims and Tamils, the LTTE began to see the Muslims as outsiders who supported the Sinhalese majority.

In October 1992, Palliyathidal was one of 17 Muslim villages in the border region of the northern part of Sri Lanka controlled by the Tigers. The villagers feared they were being used as a buffer between the LTTE and Sinhalese communities.

Children of Palliyathidal. There are hopes that upcoming elections will reunite Sri Lanka

On the night of October 14th 1992, around 500 Tamil Tigers, allegedly supported by armed Tamil civilians from nearby villages, surrounded Palliyathidal. The attack began with explosives at 4 o'clock the following morning.

Security forces had advised villagers to go straight to the mosque in the event of any attack and blow whistles for armed protection. This played straight into the LTTE's hands.

The defending force of 12 policemen was quickly killed before the Tigers started to massacre the civilians.

They threw grenades into the mosque killing around 40 people and slaughtered another 240 people with machetes and guns.

Forty-five children were among the victims as were pregnant women and their unborn babies. The LTTE called off the massacre at 8 o'clock when army helicopters arrived.

Completely destroyed

The villagers were first awoken by the sound of explosives shortly before Morning Prayer.

The police had long anticipated an attack and said they would alert the village as soon as it began.

"The police had told us they would make a sound and then everyone should gather in the mosque," Mr Ishabdeen told us.

Sri Lanka's Forgotten Massacre

Pitchathambi Ishabdeen, shopkeeper

"We heard that sound, so half the people rushed to the mosque but others didn't."

Most of those who did as the police advised died; others who fled into the surrounding paddy fields and forest survived.

Abdul Hamid Anwar was 11-years-old at the time of the massacre. He described how his family were woken by gun shots and rushed to the mosque. His mother and brother were killed when the terrorists threw grenades into the building.

Wellalebbe Mudalian, the village leader, told us how the attackers massacred the approximately 200 people - women, children and pregnant mothers - in the area outside the ruined mosque.

When the killing was over, the Tamil Tigers used their machetes to cut down coconuts and drank from them before retreating back into the jungle.

Mr Mudalian led us to the rough ground by the mosque where villagers, according to Islamic tradition, buried their dead the same day.

"We started to bury the bodies but they were completely destroyed," says Mr Mudalian.

"Some bodies were missing heads; some people were burying their mothers, their fathers, their brothers.

The fishing village of Palliyathidal
The massacre was part of a Tamil Tiger campaign of ethnic cleansing

"Everyone was buried together- parts of pregnant women, parts of bodies and children.

"Normally we would dig separate graves but we used machines to dig long pits. We had no choice."

The hope is that the Sri Lankan communities forced apart in the civil war can be reunited in forthcoming provincial elections.

Village of Palliyathidal. The massacre was part of a Tamil Tiger campaign of ethnic cleansing

But some villagers say they can never forgive the Tamil people for the events of that morning.

Others, like the shopkeeper, Mr Ishabdeen, say the defeat of the Tamil Tigers and its leadership at the end of the May does provide prospects for peace.

"Now Tamil people are very friendly," he says.

"Muslims, Sinhalese people and Tamils can all move freely. After the massacre, there was no peace. Now that the LTTE have been defeated we can take our cattle to those places we couldn't go in the past.

"Now we are happy - we have no fear."

Sri Lankan Economy Accelerates at Fastest Pace in Five Quarters

By Anusha Ondaatjie

March 30 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka’s economy expanded at the fastest pace in five quarters as the government stepped up spending on new roads and ports after the end of a quarter- century of civil war in the country.

Gross domestic product rose 6.2 percent in the three months ended Dec. 31 from a year earlier after gaining 4.2 percent in the previous quarter, the statistics department said in a statement in Colombo today.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was reelected for a six- year term in January after defeating the Tamil Tiger rebels in May, has pledged to spend $1 billion on ports, roads and power plants in 2010. Reconstruction in the $41 billion South Asian economy is boosting profit in companies including Tokyo Cement Co. Lanka Plc and Central Industries Plc.

“The infrastructure investments will have a spillover effect in the economy,” Saminda Weerasinghe, research manager at Acuity Stockbrokers Pvt. in Colombo, said before the report. “It will help even faster growth in the second half of 2010.”

Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor Nivard Cabraal on March 18 maintained benchmark interest rates at a five-year low to boost consumer demand and drive growth to as much as 7 percent in 2010. Sri Lanka’s reverse repurchase rate is 9.75 percent and the repurchase rate is 7.5 percent.

Low Inflation

Cabraal can afford to keep borrowing costs low because of tame inflation in the country. Consumer prices in the capital, Colombo, rose 6.9 percent in February from a year earlier, almost half the average inflation rate between 2004 and 2009.

Commercial bank loans rose to 1.196 trillion rupees ($10.5 billion) in January from 1.195 trillion in December, the fourth gain in five months, according to the central bank, an indicator of growing consumer spending.

Low interest rates are also critical to support domestic demand as Sri Lanka’s exports may slow in the coming months after the European Union on Feb. 15 said it will suspend preferential trade benefits to the island nation because of human rights “shortcomings” during the war.

Sri Lankan exports rose 6.4 percent in December to $723.4 million after a yearlong decline.

Peace has prompted foreign companies, including HSBC Holdings Plc and Emirates Telecommunications Corp., to start operations in the island’s northern and eastern areas that were earlier under the control of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

HSBC Holdings, Europe’s biggest bank, in February opened the first branch by any foreign bank in Sri Lanka’s northern Jaffna peninsula.

Start Operations

Etisalat, the United Arab Emirates’ biggest phone company, started services in Jaffna on Feb. 26 after acquiring Tigo Pvt., the Sri Lankan unit of Millicom International Cellular SA, for $155 million in October.

Demand for building roads and ports after the end of the war helped lift sales at Tokyo Cement by 79 percent in the three months ended Dec. 31.

Sri Lanka plans to invite overseas and local companies this month to set up business in a new $550 million tax-free port zone in the island’s south. The country is also seeking foreign investments to help build a new terminal in Colombo port, Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Priyath Wickrarma said March 5.

LTTE supporters freed by Australian SC

March 31, 2010
ExpressBuzz.com

SYDNEY: Three Australia-based Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger supporters were freed by the Supreme Court here Wednesday on bonds of good conduct after they pleaded guilty to helping the rebels.

The Supreme Court was told that a charity organisation in Australia was used as a cover to collect and send money to the Tamil Tigers. One of the three men also admitted sending electronic components to the outfit, the Herald Sun reported Wednesday.

Tamil newspaper editor Sivarajah Yathavan of Vermont South, Aruran Vinayagamoorthy of Mount Waverley and Sydney accountant Arumugan Rajeevan each pleaded guilty to providing more than $1 million in cash to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

All three admitted supporting the LTTE but denied being its members. They claimed the $1.9 million they helped collect in Australia between August 2001 and November 2005 was for humanitarian purposes in Sri Lanka, a claim that was disputed by the prosecution.

Vinayagamoorthy also pleaded guilty to making electronic components available to the LTTE, which was crushed in May last year by the military in Sri Lanka.

The three men were freed on bonds of good behaviour by Supreme Court judge Paul Coghlan.

All three were originally charged in 2007 with more serious terrorism offences carrying sentences of 25 years after police raids on their houses in 2005 found photographic evidence linking them with LTTE founder and commander Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Police also found video footage of Rajeevan and Yathavan firing a machine gun on a Tamil Tiger boat in Sri Lanka. The two were granted access to one of their training camps in 2003.

The accused faced sentences of five years under a UN charter, which says it is an offence to provide assets to a UN-proscribed entity. The charges were dropped last year due the difficulty of proving that the LTTE was a terrorist organisation when it was not declared as such in Australia.

US-Lanka spat over military cooperation

P.K.Balachandran
March 29, 2010

COLOMBO: The United States and Sri Lanka are at loggerheads over military cooperation in the context of the US charge that the Sri Lankan army had committed war crimes in the final phase of its military operations against the LTTE in 2009.

While the US army refused to accept high level Sri Lankan officers for some advanced training in US bases, the Sri Lankan army said that it would not allow US air mobile units to participate in a joint training exercise involving the Special Forces of the two countries, The Island daily reported on monday.

The US, however, has had no compunction about conducting joint exercises with the Sri Lankan navy and Air Force.

Political observers here see the US stand on training the Sri Lankan army as part of the West’s pressure to make the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration bend to its demand for an investigation of war crimes charges and the establishment of a war crimes tribunal. The West believes that about 40,000 Sri Lankan Tamils were killed as a result of incessant army shelling in the last few weeks of Eelam War IV. But the Sri Lankan government denies this and says that, if any thing, its army should be credited for rescuing 280,000 Tamils from the clutches of the LTTE terrorists.

Diplomatic sources told Express that they were not surprised by the US refusal to train Sri Lankan army officers in their home bases because the US generally did not believe in exposing their systems to officers from outside the Western world. But the US would be eager to participate in joint exercises in other countries to know the capabilities of those countries and the conditions prevailing there.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka received a set back in its spat with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon when Egypt , the chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), wrote to Ban acknowledging his right to appoint a panel of experts to advice him on human rights issues in Sri Lanka. NAM agreed with Ban that the appointment of such a panel would not be an infringement of Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.

SLAF readying to set up permanent bases near LTTE airstrips

The SLAF is in the process of preparing the ground for setting up of two permanent bases at Iranamadu and Mullaitivu adjacent to LTTE runways. About 300 troops are deployed at each site in temporary facilities.

An authoritative official told The Island that contrary to reports LTTE runways could not be transformed for civilian use overnight. He said that it would be a gradual and costly process. According to him, only two runways at Iranamadu and Mullaitivu could be used, though terrorists had set up seven runways, east and west of the A9 road to launch light aircraft. Responding to a query by The Island, the official said that even the airfields at Iranamadu and Mullitivu were in poor condition and could not have accommodated a large fixed wing aircraft. They could have taken a Y 12, a Chinese-built light aircraft capable of carrying 16 persons, he said.

The makeshift airstrip built by the LTTE in the jungles of the North is to be turned into an aviation complex under government post-war reconstruction plans. The proposal is part of a regional development plan for the Northern Province.

The LTTE built an airstrip in the thick jungles of Iranamadu near an irrigation reservoir, when the area was under their control.

At a seminar organised by the Sri Lanka Shippers' Council to brief investors on investment opportunities, the Director of Geographical Information Systems of the Urban Development Authority said that the Government will develop the airstrip into an aviation complex. It will be equipped with a training and research institute.

Another former Tiger stronghold in Mullaitivu, on the northeast coast, has been earmarked as a centre for fisheries-based engineering equipment industry and for sea-based eco-tourism.

Aerial survey to locate mineral deposits

With the recent Cabinet recommendation of a proposal to conduct a magnetic aerial survey to locate the mineral deposits of the country by Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, Mines and Geological Bureau has sought foreign funding of US$ 3.5 million for the purpose.

The Bureau's Geophysicist Nalin de Silva told 'The Island' on Friday that they were seeking assistance from Korea, Russia as well as from the European Union countries.

"We are going for either full assistance or partial assistance with the Bureau funding the balance cost," he added. The government has decided to do the survey by itself as to prevent the data of sensitive information going into the hands of alien forces.

He said the survey scheduled to be implemented in three stages would take at least one and half years.

Special surveillance aircraft equipped with magnetic instruments as well as the necessary technology know-how would be needed to conduct the survey, he said.

He also said that though the necessity of such a survey of this nature was mooted eight years ago it was delayed due to limited technology and the prevailing situation at that time.

However, he said now they were in a position to conduct a survey covering the entire island.

Terrorist convict Nalini, member of the extremist terrorist outfit LTTE, is serving life sentence for the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Nalini despite found guilty of all the charges have refused to apologise for the Gandhi assassination.

According to Tamil Nadu news sources, Nalini's lawyers are approach the Supreme Court against the Tamil Nadu government's decision to reject her appeal for release.

On Monday, Tamil Nadu Advocate General P.S. Raman submitted to the Madras High Court the government decision. The board, headed by the Velloredistrict collector, listed eight counts so as not to free Nalini, including her reported refusal to apologise for the Gandhi assassination.

According to TN news agencies, this is the second time after 2008 that a Prison Advisory Board has turned down Nalini's plea for freedom. Congress leaders have opposed the release of Nalini and others convicted for the killing of Gandhi at an election rally at Sriperumbudur near here May 21, 1991.

Gandhi was blown up when a young woman suicide bomber from the LTTE detonated explosives strapped on her body while pretending to touch his feet at the rally.

According to investigators, Nalini was part of the 'killer team' that wanted to kill Gandhi for sending the Indian Army to Sri Lanka in 1987. The troops fought the LTTE for over two years.

Originally, Nalini was convicted on 16 counts of murder and awarded death penalty. Later, at the intervention of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the slain Gandhi's widow, this was commuted to life imprisonment.

Tamil Diaspora's New Umbrella - The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) Fails to Hide the Tigers' Stripes

(By: Mahinda Gunasekera)

The Tamil Diaspora which funded the brutal terrorist movement called the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) also known as the Tamil Tigers, has regularly changed its disguise through a simple metamorphosis involving a name change and re-arranging the deck with new faces to hide their links to the designated terror group. After the military action taken by the Sri Lankan forces ended in May 2009 with the killing of the Tiger Supremo, Velupillai Prabhakaran and his lieutenants on the banks of the Nanthikadal Lagoon on the northeast coast, the carefully laid out plans of foisting a Tamil state on Sri Lankan soil with western support simply vanished like a bad dream that partially disturbed the nation which woke up to face the challenge head on. The Tamil Diaspora's plans to carve out a separate state covering one-third of the land area spread over two-thirds of the coast extending from the northwest to the southeast of the island for less than half the total Tamils counting less than 4 percent resident in the region, by force of arms, went up in smoke along with the massive stockpile of weapons they had procured for the purpose and smuggled into the jungle hideout of the Tiger terror machine in the Vanni.

Looking at the congregation of Tamil Diaspora organizations which went to form the Global Tamil Forum it is quite evident to anyone that it is merely a re-branding of the pro-Tamil Tiger World Tamil Movement (WTM), with its goal of establishing a separate Tamil state within the sovereign territory of the Sri Lankan nation remaining the same. The involvement of the groups that were the main propagandists for the Tamil Tigers such as the Canadian Tamil Congress which took over the leadership in Canada following the arrest of the head of the WTM and the designation of the LTTE as an international terrorist group in September 2001 by the UN, the Norwegian Council of Eelam Tamils, and the House of Eelam Tamils with the map of the mythical state of "Eelam" as its logo along with similar groups in 14 countries including Europe, USA, Australia, and New Zealand, leaves nothing to the imagination of the observers to determine the nature of the newly created beast in London, UK, on February 24, 2010.

In addition, bringing on Father S.J. Emmanuel, the former Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Jaffna to lead the GTF leaves little room to doubt the ulterior aims and motives of this body of hate filled Diaspora Tamils that bankrolled the Tamil Tiger killing machine with access to billions of extorted and ill gotten dollars in their secret coffers. Father Emmanuel is well known for his controversial statement comparing the remorseless megalomaniacal leader of the brutal Tamil Tiger Terrorists, Velupillai Prabhakaran to Jesus Christ who is regarded as the Great Redeemer, in an interview given to the British national newspaper, the Independent. He has in his writings and talks defended the terrorist activities of the LTTE and fanned the flames of war and violence causing untold misery to thousands of innocent lives of people from all communities in Sri Lanka. Father Emmanuel who has been a key figure in the LTTE international network has been using his religious cloak to stalk like a holy Tiger in the corridors of power in Europe and South Africa to win sympathy and support for the terrorist cause.

Tamil Diaspora's New Umbrella - The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) Fails to Hide the Tigers' Stripes

........continued 1....
It is not surprising that the British who are the architects of division in their former colonies including Sri Lanka (Ceylon), which have led to conflicts with minorities seeking the special privileges and power bestowed to them by the colonial regime even after independence from Britain, hosting the GTF Conference and giving their blessings to these misguided Tamil separatists pursuing the break up of the sovereign state of Sri Lanka. Making a big splash at this conference held in the Gladstone Room of the British Parliament were David Milliband, British Foreign Secretary who made the opening speech, whilst the Conservative 'shadow' foreign secretary William Hague and the Liberal Democrat counterpart Ed Davey also addressed the delegates. Other speakers included nine members of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils (APPG-T), two British members of the European Parliament and about six other senior parliamentarians including Simon Hughes and Gareth Thomas, and an ANC member of the South African Parliament. Among the attendees were Rev. Jesse Jackson who was introduced as a friend of President Obama and a representative of the Royal Norwegian Government. There were greetings from the British Conservative Party leader David Cameron and Robert Blake the current US Secretary of State for South and Central Asia and a meeting of GTF representatives with Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Here we have the main actors who attempted to pressure Sri Lanka to halt the military action against the LTTE terrorists who refused to surrender to the Sri Lankan authorities, and seek to provide safe passage and asylum for the Tamil Tiger leaders in a foreign country to continue their attacks to destabilize the island nation.

The Diaspora Tamils have been conducting meaningless referenda in their host countries in the west to seek a mandate to pursue the same objectives of a separate state called "Eelam" within the sovereign territory of Sri Lanka as envisioned in the 'Vadukkodai Resolution' of 1976, based on the false premise of the existence of a traditional homeland of the Tamils in the north and east of the island from the dawn of history. Firstly, the Diaspora Tamils who hold foreign citizenship and domiciled outside Sri Lanka cannot have a say in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka which can be decided only by citizens of the land. Furthermore, historical records show that the vast majority of the Tamils were brought to Sri Lanka by the Dutch and British colonialists for work on tobacco, cocoa, coffee and tea plantations which they started after destroying the ecological wealth of the country and taking over the lands of the indigenous Sinhalese whom they dispossessed through infamous Acts such as the Waste Lands Ordinance, etc. Tamils first arrived as invaders but were driven back to South India from the pockets they captured after short periods of control of such terrain. Except for a few Tamils who arrived as settlers around the 12th century, the bulk of the Tamils came as indentured labour under the Dutch and British colonial regimes which date back to about 350 years, which is a far stretch to say it extends to the dawn of history which covers 2600 years of the Sinhalese domination of the island as given in the 'Mahavamsa', which is a chronicle of recorded history.

Now that the Tiger terrorists have been totally defeated and their overseas financiers in the Diaspora sidelined to their fantasy mythical land of "Eelam", the Tamils who are equal citizens of Sri Lanka could look forward to participating in the development of their country and building a peaceful and prosperous nation.

Tamil Diaspora's New Umbrella - The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) Fails to Hide the Tigers' Stripes

......continued 2....
Nearly 250,000 of the approximately 294,000 civilians who were forcibly removed from their villages in the Vanni to form a human shield for the retreating Tiger terrorists have since been re-settled in the de-mined and re-built villages within a space of nine months, whilst infrastructure, roads and electric power is being extended to the region at a rapid pace. The 11,000 odd Tiger cadres that surrendered are being provided with vocational training and being re-habilitated into society. Tamil children who risked being abducted to end up as cannon fodder or be brainwashed to become suicide bombers could now look forward to receiving a proper education that will open new vistas of opportunity for improving their lot. Those civilians who lived under the jackboot of the Tiger terrorists can get back to farming, fishing or other normal activities instead of digging bunkers, trenches, and putting together landmines and other explosive devices to kill and maim their fellow citizens belonging to different communities. The Tamil civilians who were prevented from participating in the democratic process and choosing their representatives have to a large extent got back their freedom and their democratic rights, and are now in a position to contribute to their betterment and that of their country which they share with members of the multi-ethnic and multi-religious society of Sri Lanka.

The free movement of people of varying backgrounds, travelling north, south and in all directions within the island after the collapse of the Tamil Tiger built iron curtain of deadly Mines, Suicide Bombers, Maaveera killers, RPGs, AK47s, Mortars, Artillery Guns, Suicide Boats, Chemical Weapons, Night Bombers, etc., is contributing to building friendly ties and bonds in every field that is leading towards healing of the conflicting issues and reconciliation, whilst ushering in an era of peace and plenty for all. The Global Tamil Forum which may wield a little political clout in an insignificant number of electorates in western countries has little or no influence within Sri Lanka, and will soon become redundant and fade away like the mythical dream state of "Eelam".

Colonel Hariharan belts out the same old Indian blues: "Devolution ..Devolution .. Devolution; Devolution is the only solution to Sri Lanka's Tamil grievances." Divide your country now .. set the stage for us to move in later .. advises this totally unbiased Indian guru.

This is from a "respected" military analyst of a country beset by terrorist violence that affects over 800 million of its 1200 million population, despite having "Devolved Power" to different regions on the basis of ethnicity.

The failure of that brilliant approach to solve India's own problems of separatism and terrorism does not restrain him, nor diminish his enthusiam one iota, as he happiliy prescribes the same toxic potion to Sri Lanka!

EXCERPTS FROM:
SRI LANKA: No Action on Core Issues – Up date No 194

President Rajapaksa had painted the LTTE led insurgency as the root cause of all evils. If it had been so, ethnic divide should have vanished with the demise of Tamil Tigers. He has offered neither a creative solution nor a chalked out a time bound path for reconciliation. So ethnic divide is still very much alive; and it is at the root of most evils bugging the country. In fact, the elections have given a fresh lease of life to the ethnic issue.

........

Proportional representation system in parliament makes it difficult for any single party to gain absolute majority. Out of the 225 members of parliament, 196 members are elected directly. The remaining 29 members are appointed from the National List based upon the percentage of votes secured by the contesting parties. So despite Rajapaksa’s confidence, and weakening of the opposition, UPFA securing two-thirds majority may not be such a simple equation.

.......

The Tamil Diaspora still appears to the dreaming of Tamil Eelam. Dreams do not become reality unless they related to the real world. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has metamorphosed into Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) reverting back to the Federal Party days when the Tamil Tigers were not born. But this cosmetic change is not enough. The historical moment for reincarnation of Federal Party is probably over. The ITAK cannot have the cake and eat it for the Tamil Diaspora support. It has to make hard choices and it appears to be in no mood to do so.

ITAK has to evolve a strategy to deal with the emergence of Mahinda Rajapaksa as an unchallenged leader. He has used a mix of leveraging circumstances, back room deals, arm twisting and street smart political moves to reach this position. Unless ITAK shows it can deal with him effectively to get the best deal for Tamils, it is likely lose its flock. Its dissipation of followers will also probably see the slow dismantling of other exclusive Tamil parties as national parties pick up their cadres offering carrots of power and position.

Explaining Mahinda’s Landslide Victory-Another Point of View:

Guest Column by V. Suryanarayan

The landslide victory of Mahinda Rajapakshe in the Sri Lankan Presidential election held on January 26, 2010 came as a surprise to Sri Lanka watchers in India and in other countries. The media reported that it would be a “close contest” between two “War Heroes”, the President, who provided the overall political leadership and the Army Chief, who was in charge of direct military operations, both combining to inflict a crushing defeat on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, considered to be the most ruthless and, at the same time, one of the most disciplined guerrilla organizations in the world. The reports also indicated that the minority votes – Tamil and Muslim- would be crucial and it will be the decisive factor tilting the balance in favour of the winning candidate.

The result belied all expectations. Mahinda Rajapakshe, the incumbent President, who called for the election two years before it was due, polled 6,015,934 votes (57.88 per cent) and General Sarat Fonseka 4,173,185 votes (40.15 per cent) giving a commanding lead of more than one million votes (17.0 per cent).

It may be recalled that in the earlier Presidential election held in 2005, what enabled Rajapakshe to win was the call for boycott issued by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The Tamil voters in the north and the east responded to the LTTE appeal. If the Tamils had voted, they would have overwhelmingly endorsed the candidature of Ranil Wikramasinghe, who would have won the election hands down. It is one of the cruel ironies of modern Sri Lankan history that the Sinhalese leader who sounded the death knell of the Tigers came to power with the tacit support of Prabakaran.

Sarath Fonseka was able to mobilize a broad coalition of forces, representing major ethnic groups – Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim. The coalition included United National Party, the Sinhala extremist Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP), the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC). What is more interesting, the former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, belonging to the same party as Mahinda Raiapakshe, also extended her support to Fonseka. But at the same time, it must be pointed out that the coalition did not have a common stance on the crucial question of ethnic reconciliation and the future constitutional set up. The JVP subscribed to the concept of unitary state and was opposed to devolution of powers to the provinces, the UNP upheld the 13th amendment, the TNA advocated 13th amendment plus and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress wanted autonomy to the Muslim areas. Sarat Foneka was ambivalent on the issue and made contradictory statements. On the contrary, Mahinda Rajapakshe wanted to consolidate and expand his Sinhala base in which he succeeded in a big way. It was the rural vote bank which catapulted Mahinda Rajapkshe to power in a convincing way. The JVP, which is the main opponent of the SLFP in the rural areas, was unable to deliver the goods. It was not able to provide a convincing answer to the rural electorate the logic of its coming together with the pro-Tiger TNA and the UNP which swore by the India-Sri Lanka Accord.

Explaining Mahinda’s Landslide Victory-Another Point of View:

........continued....
A careful analysis of the election results indicate the widening of ethnic polarization in the Island Republic. The electoral districts, where the overwhelming majority of the voters are Tamils and Moslems, voted for Sarat Fonseka. However, voting in the Northern Province was far below national average. In Central, North Central, North Western, Sabaragamuva, Southern and Uva provinces Mahinda Rajapakshe scored spectacular victory.

The foremost objective of President Rajapakshe will be to expand and consolidate his electoral base in the parliamentary election scheduled to be held in April 2010. But the parliamentary election will be held on the basis of proportional system of representation. The regional parties can be expected to do well in their pockets of influence. And if recent history holds any lessons for the future, no political party by itself will be able to get an absolute majority. The coalition governments had been the order of the day in Sri Lanka for the last two decades.

The greatness of a nation, Mahatma Gandhi once said, consists of how well it treats its minorities. The success of Sri Lanka would depend on the ushering of a new constitutional order, where multiple identities can co-exist harmoniously. A Tamil can be a Tamil, while being a Sri Lankan. This presupposes substantial devolution of powers to various provinces. Unless Mahinda Rajapakshe and other Sinhalese leaders accept this fundamental axiom, there is unlikely to be any meaningful ethnic reconciliation in the island. A long summer of discontent is ahead of Sri Lanka.

A Sri Lankan's analysis of the Presidential Election

............
Sri Lankan Presidential Election 2010: Preliminary Observations - An Ethnic Polarisation?

Guest Column by Dr. Kasun Ubayasiri

(The views expressed are author's own)

Sri Lankan’s January 26, 2010 presidential election is the first in nearly three decades to be held without the cloud of an ethic war in the North and East. It was the first after the government’s military defeat of the LTTE in its so called ‘humanitarian operation’ to ‘liberate’ Tamils form the Tiger controlled north. For the outset it became clear the election was a two party race between incumbent President Rajapakse the political choreographer of the final assault, and General Sarath Fonseka the victorious army commander. For the Sinhala voter it was choice between two war heroes. For the Tamils it was perhaps it was no choice at all.

When the votes were counted, President Mahinda Rajapakse had secured an impressive 57.88% of the vote, decimating his much lauded opponent General Sarath Fonseka with 40.15%. Rajapakse’s landslide winning vote, shows a marked improvement from his 50.29% win over the UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe’s 48.43% in 2005, and is second only to Chandrika Kumaratunga’s win in 1994. Interestingly however, Kumaratunga took out the presidency with 62.3% of the national vote, her victory coming on the heels of the hugely unpopular reign of President Ranasinghe Premadasa. It could be argued that Rajapakse, having won a war, should have polled higher – the fly in the electoral ointment however, was that his opponent was no ordinary political player, but also a fellow war hero.

In crude numbers, the President’s electoral victory represents a 1,842,749 vote lead, with Rajapakse polling 6,015,934 votes against Fonseka’s 4,173,185 votes. In terms of polling districts, Rajapakse secured 14 of the 22 polling districts, while Fonseka was able to secure only six. Rajapakse’s winning margin, while not the largest in Sri Lanka’s electoral history, is certainly resounding.

From an analytical perspective however, the final tally of results and their demographic spread is perhaps even more interesting. Of the six electoral districts secured by Fonseka, the five districts of Jaffna, Wanni, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Digamadulla in the North and East of the country, virtually map the purported Tamil homeland of Eelam, with the exclusion of the western district of Puttalam on the west coast. While this observation does not contribute to the ideological claim of a separate Eelam homeland, it is undeniable that the regions represent the largest concentration of Tamil speaking people in Sri Lanka. The observation of a Tamil polarisation against Rajapakse, in favour of Fonseka is even more evident when the polling results of Nuwara Eliya in central Sri Lanka are taken into account. While this region is outside the so-called Tamil homeland it contains a significant population of ‘estate Tamils’ of Indian origin, those people brought to Sri Lanka as indentured labour during British colonisation. Nuwara Eliya, was the only polling district outside the North and East to favour Fonseka in an election where he lost even his home electorate of Ambalangoda in southern Sri Lanka’s Galle district.

The simple observation of the 2010 electoral demographics therefore suggest a polarisation between Tamil and Sinhala voters, which in turn suggests that the overwhelming mandate for President Rajapakse’s second term was largely bestowed by the Sinhalese, and not the newly ‘liberated’ Tamils of the North and East.

Sri Lankan Presidential Election 2010: Preliminary Observations - An Ethnic Polarisation?

......continued 1....
In the lead up to the elections Dr Wickramabahu Karunaratne the leader of the Trotskyist Nava Sama Samaja Pakshaya (New Social Equality Party) openly claimed his goal was to ensure that neither Rajapakse nor Fonseka received the minimum 50% vote required to prevent a second round of elections. Karunaratne, a veteran but unsuccessful leftist politician, joined forces with Tamil nationalist and former Tamil Nationalist Alliance MP MK Shivajilingham who was contesting as an independent, urging Tamils to vote for either himself or Shivajilingham. Karunaratne argued that both Fonseka and Rajapakse were essentially of the same ilk and were parts of the government ‘war machine’. He argued that army commander Fonseka and the president responsible for the military push against the LTTE, Rajapakse, were responsible for the death, displacement and even internment of thousands of Tamil civilians. In this context it is perhaps interesting to note that despite Karunaratne’s appeal, Tamils in the North and East did not feel compelled to vote for Shivajilingham – the only Tamil candidate – but continued with the established pattern of voting for a major party candidate.

Despite the presence of a record number of presidential hopefuls - 22 individual candidates, all other candidates combined, excluding Rajapakse and Fonseka, polled a mere 1.97% of all votes islandwide. However the Tamil speaking districts showed a greater percentage of votes to non-mainstream candidates. Digamadulla and Trincomalee which contain significant pockets of Sinhala and Muslim voters, despite its predominantly Tamil demographic, polled 2.14% and 2.97% respectively for the non-mainstream candidates. A similar percentage of 2.09% was seen in Nuwara Eliya. Both Batticaloa and Wanni polled 4.87% and 5.83% in favour of non-mainstream candidates with Jaffna polling a staggering 11.41% – a figure which is perhaps to be expected from what was traditionally the epicentre of the Eelam struggle, the quasi-capital of the Eelam nation. 11.53%.

It can be argued that these figures are also reflective of the Tamil population’s level of commitment to a Tamil homeland. Certainly those districts which polled highest for a third-party candidate Jaffna (11.41%), Wanni (5.83%) and Batticaloa (4.87%) were, by virtue of their strategic locations, militarily and socially more engaged in the fight for Tamil Eelam in the past 20 years, than the districts of Nuwara Eliya and Digamadulla. It is therefore likely those higher polling areas have more reason to find the choice between an ex-army commander and a wartime president unappealing.

Nation-wide however the minor party candidates were insignificant. This is particularly clear when the 1.97% total for all third parties candidates in 2010 is compared with the results from the 1982 election in which Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Rohana Wijeweera polled 4.2% of the total votes and All Ceylon Tamil Congress’ GG Ponnambalam secured 2.7% of the national vote. Similarly in 1988, Sri Lanka Mahajana Party’s Oswin Abeygunasekara polled 4.6%, while in 1999 the JVP’s Nandana Gunathilaka landed 4.1%. The election of 2010, by comparison, was clearly a two party race.

Ananda-USA said...

Sri Lankan Presidential Election 2010: Preliminary Observations - An Ethnic Polarisation?

.......continued 2....
It is also worth noting Fonseka polled 63.84%, 66.86% and 68.93% in Jaffna, Wanni and Batticaloa respectively, suggesting support for Fonseka in the eastern district of Batticaloa is comparable with that of the Jaffna and the Wanni – all former LTTE strongholds. The Batticaloa results are particularly interesting since the defection of the LTTE eastern commander Karuna Amman was one of the key politico-military events instrumental in the LTTE’s military defeat at the hands of the government forces. While Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Colonel Karuna may have joined Rajapakse’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party and been appointed Minister of National Integration and SLFP vice-president, it seems the once feared eastern commander no longer holds political sway over the east or more specifically his own home town of Batticaloa.

Given the polling statistics for the two major parties, it’s clear the Tamil voters favoured Fonseka, not only over Rajapakse but also minor candidates. There has been some suggestion that Fonseka had reached an agreement with the politically fragmented Tamil Nationalist Alliance, frequently portrayed in the south as a political nexus of the LTTE. The Rajapakse camp’s claims of a Fonseka-TNA agreement with key TNA MPs including R. Sampanthan, Mavai Senathirajah, Suresh Premachandran and even Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, may have swayed the Tamil vote in favour of Fonseka and the Sinhala vote against him. It is more likely however, that the reason for the lingua-ethnic polarisation of the vote is due to historical political realties which force the Tamils to see Fonseka not as the army commander who orchestrated the final battle against the LTTE, but as the political front of the UNP – a more conservative political partly which is likely to offer greater compromise to the Tamils despite their obvious political and military disadvantage in Sri Lanka’s post war landscape – a concession unlikely to come from President Rajapakse’s politically dominant and overtly nationalist government. The Tamils may also fear the strengthening of the Rajapakse’s presidency and his ruling SLFP coalition would further decimate any opposition in Sri Lanka, thus delivering power to a south centric ultra-nationalist lobby which is poised to rule virtually uncontested by even its contemporary political ‘opponents’ the UNP and the JVP.

Dhesa,

Absolutely its all part of the bs to portray MR "as a dictator". We have had previous Governments do worse (including bodies piled up on the streets in the 80s) but the West never seemed bothered because those days the Governments were pro-Western lackeys. CBKs time lots of journalists were threathened and killed, no one raised this sort of high pitched screaming you see today. It is only when MR who gives the West the finger and does what is in our interest (thus far with respect to the LTTE) does this along with other “issues” over democracy become a problem for the West. Corruption and political appointees always existed but its only now a problem (linked to the HR bs). They try and attack the apparatus of the State and override it using the bogus HR card by saying things like the “judiciary has failed to stop HR violations/bring anyone to justice” and tie, when in reality the HR accusations are all BS with no evidence to back it up

Furthermore this mutt Prageeth Eknaligoda is not the only one to write vicious articles against Rajapakse, plenty more did it and nothing happened to them. But Prageeth suddenly goes for a walk about two days before the election, how fascinating.

The timing could not be better -word was flying around that Gonseka was responsible for killing journalists including top scum Lasantha. So to quickly cover that up they "disappear" some nobody. I had never heard of this clown Eknaligoda until he wondered off.

DBSJ cries for the "redress of Tamil grievances and aspirations" that are SEPARATE from Sri Lankan aspirations, and touts the LTTE agents of the TNA as the democratic "Tamil Voice" in the continuing quest for a de-facto Tamil Eelam of some form.

It seems NOTHING has really changed as he declares that the TNA should

Tamil National Alliance enters critical third phase-1

Redressing Tamil grievances and achieving legitimate Tamil aspirations within a united but not necessarily a unitary Sri Lanka remain unfulfilled tasks still. The Sri Lankan Tamils require a credible “voice” to articulate their grievances and aspirations. Such a voice must be elected democratically and spurn separatism and violence. In that context the 2010 poll provides an appropriate opportunity for the election of a strong Tamil voice.

Given the fact that the TNA held 22 seats in the 2004 – 2010 Parliament it is but natural to assume that the alliance is the best bet out of available choices. Even if unable to replicate the 2004 result en toto the TNA seems capable of winning a fair number of seats at the present hustings too. It would however face stiff competition from a plethora of political parties and independent groups.

but who wants good times??? only some. some don't want it. they want tamil elam first.

a dilapidated tamil elam is MUCH MUCH BETTER than a prosperous SL, for them. they are the MAJORITY in the north.

if we need the north of SL, we should change this dominant political force in the north. ONLY WAY is RE-COLONIZATION. then allow ppl to ethnically integrate at their own pace.

Like i said earlier many Sinhalese are brainwashed by our own propaganda that Tamils are snuggle bunnies. They are vicious wolves who see weakness for exploitation in Sinhalese. Their ethnic enclaves breathe life to this thinking and they want to keep it that way. Why else do they do the same in Colombo, Toronto, Paris, London and elsewhere making Tamiz only ghettos.

I think they don't want to risk self-determination attempts in UK by Tamil extremists. Which means if our "political solution" does not involve devolution, UK (and hence EU) may not make a fuss!

Anyway, if this video was meant for Sri Lankans in Sri Lanka, it is quite patronising!

Tamil OAP faces arrest over launch of terror-link political party
6:30am Thursday 1st April 2010

Print Email Share Comments(2) Exclusive By Mike Didymus »

A pensioner faces arrest after launching a political party linked to a banned terrorist organisation from his Purley Way headquarters.

The Electoral Commission has removed the People’s Front of Liberation Tigers (PFLT) from its register while it investigates its links to the Sri Lankan terrorist group the Tamil Tigers.

Group leader Nadarajah Balasubramaniam, 69, plans to field candidates from his party in upcoming council and national elections, despite the Tigers being listed as a proscribed party under the Terrorism Act.

In an exclusive interview with the Croydon Guardian Mr Balasubramaniam, who calls himself Bala, defended the Tigers’ use of suicide bombing.

The former post office clerk from Thornton Heath said he chose Lombard Business Park in Purley Way for his party’s base as it had 24-hour security.

Mr Balasubramaniam hopes holding debates will raise awareness about the genocide he said occurred when Sri Lankan troops wiped out the Tamil Tiger army last year.

He said: “The arguments are all in our favour – the Tigers are real freedom fighters and it is wrong to brand them as terrorists.”

The Tamil Tigers became notorious for suicide bombings, recruiting child soldiers and massacring civilians during more than 30 years of civil war, until they were defeated by the Sri Lankan army last May.

Mr Balasubramaniam said he had been involved with the Tamil struggle for a separate state in the north and east of Sri Lanka since he was 15, but said he had never thrown a bomb or taken part in violence.

He said: “I don’t know if we will win any seats but we are in a good position to get our message across.

“The Tamil Tigers were accepted by the people. Even the suicide bombings were accepted by the public. Those pictures of children with guns were just propaganda.

“Boys voluntarily came and joined the Tigers, but they were just given an education.”

A spokesman for the Electoral Commission, which is in charge of registering political parties in the UK said: “The group was registered with us as a political party on February 10 this year.

“On March 19 we were made aware of comments in the press attributed to the party leader, saying it was a continuation of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a proscribed organisation.

“We have temporarily removed them from the register while we investigate this.”

Sri Lanka Minister launches world's first plant that generates petrol from polythene

Thu, Apr 1, 2010, 09:45 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 01, Colombo: Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday (31) launched Polypto, the world's first plant in which petrol is generated from polythene and plastic waste.

The plant, Polypto Lanka, is a project initiated by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) in collaboration with Ananda Withanage, the inventor of the novel concept, and several lecturers from the Chemical and Process Engineering Department of the University of Moratuwa.

The plant located in Yatiyanthota is still in the secondary stage. It processes non-biodegradable matter such as mixed plastics, except for PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) and directly produces three most valuable forms of crude oil - petrol, diesel and kerosene. It has the capacity to process waste plastics from a minimum of 500 kilos up to a maximum of 1000 kilos daily.

The output from the plant is estimated to range around 0.75 to 1 litre of petrol from one kilo of waste plastics. Therefore, the daily generation of Polypto petrol is expected to vary from 500 to 1000 liters.

Minister Ranawaka speaking at the occasion said the project has opened up an ideal opportunity to earn extensive profits from waste and called it a giant step in creating a greener Sri Lanka.said it was a great opportunity to earn profits from waste.

The newly produced fuel was pumped into fuel tanks of three-wheelers and motor cycles at the event.

In the few square kilometres between the sea and the lagoon to the north of Mullaitivu, where Prabhakaran breathed his last and Sri Lanka was liberated from 30 years of the most tragic suffering, no house stands undamaged. Most have gaping holes in their roofs, while their walls are pocked with bullet holes.

...

I was there to participate in a film. From the moment I was asked, I worried about the ethics of joining in an activity that might delay resettlement. At the very least, it would be diverting the limited resources of the Army, occupying the time of a not insignificant number of soldiers over a period of nearly six months. There could be many reasons for the Government to prefer it to getting people back to their homes.

As I was told on several occasions, the No Fire Zone is a million dollar set.

...

Directed by Buddhi Keerthisena, it focuses on a love affair between two young Tamils who get entangled with the LTTE and end up fighting to stay alive in the No Fire Zone. It is called ‘Maathaa’.

...

A bit of triumphant celebration is called for too, given the many years of conflict Sri Lanka has undergone. The statue put up across from the banks of the Nanthi Kadal, of a man in combat gear, brandishing a rifle and the national flag, is quite nicely done. It is just that dumping it with a rather tasteless looking Souvenir Shop next to a place where so many other people were killed, before their relatives have returned home and without any kind of official recognition of their suffering, comes across as wrong.

Any of you chaps been to see the monument marking the war victory at Nanthi Kadal? Wonder what they sell in the Souvenir Shop there. May be replicas of the gun held by Sgt. MuthuBanda or Velu dolls in a blue thong!

Cheers!

When I first read this story, I thought it was an April fool’s joke.

the men formed the leadership group of the Australian arm of the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers

The men had regular meetings with Melbourne-based leader of the Australian branch of Sri Lanka's Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam

A charity run by the men was used as a cover to collect and send money to the LTTE in Sri Lanka

Police seized video footage during raids in 2005 of Rajeevan and Yathavan , firing a machinegun on board a Tamil Tiger gunboat in Sri Lanka and visiting one of the group's terrorist training camps.

Vinayagamoorthy, 35, of Mount Waverley, Yathavan, 39, and Rajeevan, 44, have each pleaded guilty to providing more than $1 million to the LTTE and Vinayagamoorthy also admitted providing the LTTE with electronic devices, at least one of which was used to make and detonate a bomb used in a terrorist attack.

Justice Coghlan sentenced all three to be jailed for a year for providing more than $1 million to the LTTE and jailed Vinayagamoorthy for 18 months for providing the electronic devices.
But he then released all three on $1000 good-behaviour bonds

Justice Coghlan told the men: "I would not go so far as saying that your aims were entirely humanitarian. But I do accept that they were not purposely to assist terrorist activity."

Full story with the video.

From: Herald Sun April 01, 2010 12:00AM

THOUSANDS of desperate Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka have a stark choice: stay and be persecuted or risk the long, dangerous voyage to Australia.

A senior diplomat, experienced in people smuggling matters, said Sri Lanka's government cared about neither the refugees' fate nor Australia's boat people predicament.

Naval intelligence sources told the Herald Sun that Colombo encouraged Tamils to risk the dangerous voyage.

Some Tamil boats have disappeared, though no one knows how many might have perished.

Hahaha. I seriously hope this is the case.

"The only way forward is through multilateral diplomacy using Indonesia, Thailand and even New Zealand to lobby the Sri Lankans," said the diplomat, who asked not to be named."

["Tamil refugees told to get out of Sri Lanka or suffer persecution"

Pol,

I am surprised at your stand, which in my view, is absolutely unacceptable.

We are trying to build in Sri Lanka a country where ALL LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS can live in peace and comfort, and prosper without let or hindrance of any kind.

We certainly don't want a country in which any community is deprived of EQUAL RIGHTS and FORCED to LEAVE.

On the other hand, no one should be permitted to demand and agitate for special EXCLUSIVE rights only for themselves. In particular, no mono-ethnic aparthied Bantustans, or movements espousing that ideal, should be permitted in Sri Lanka.

EVERYONE, Tamils or not, should certainly LEAVE Sri Lanka if they cannot accept living in Sri Lanka as citizens with EQUAL RIGHTS and EQUAL RESPONSIBILITIES, because any course of action by them contrary to that ideal will land them in prison or worse .. but the ultimate choice of LEAVING or STAYING should be theirs, and theirs alone.

If incurable Eelamists cannot accept the notion of living in ONE NATION, as ONE PEOPLE with ONE SHARED DESTINY, then by all means let those miscreants of the future LEAVE of their own accord. However, that should be their choice; let no one else force that choice upon them, pre-judging their motivations and future behavior, as long as they continue to abide by the law of the land.

This is the only ETHICAL, MORAL, and LEGAL STAND for us to take, fully acceptable and defensible under international law.

Let us not lead Sri Lanka towards universal condemnation and disaster by espousing indefensible positions.

Please don't assume that "all of a sudden" Ananda-USA has become a soft bleeding heart.

I have always stood in favour of fighting Sri Lanka's enemies tooth and nail, giving no quarter.

But, my goal in so fighting always was to preserve Sri Lanka whole as a united, secure and prosperous haven for ALL Sri Lankans to live in harmony, irrespective of their community.

Ananda what are you on about?

I am not saying they should be persecuted as implied by the bs in Western media.

Tamilia already have equal rights, they want special rights to be MORE EQUAL.

They will always be a massive problem if you think otherwise well go ahead.

Getting rid of them is the best way; let them enjoy a comfy life in Oz!

Besides the ones that leave won't be missed, new batches will constantly be entering SL from TN to replace them :))

So think of it as a way of keeping things in balance ya?

On a more serious note if you think they will ever change or have changed or want to go around kissing trees with us then you are dead wrong.

They will always be against us, they will always try and undermine us, they will always complain, kill and lie to get what they want. They will only "feel equal" when they come to dominate us.

They will never follow law, order and the rest of that jazz. The fact is they see WEAKNESS when such is applied.

The softy softy approach only encourages their current behaviour, thinking and belief they can dominate us hence formulate agendas and actions to fulfil this goal. Our people have been through enough. Our people have suffered immensely to fill the greed, ego and supremacist desires and self-aggrandisement of a bunch of coolies who do not belong here but comically believe it is their right to subjugate us because they are the chosen one of suddha. Ananda you have noble goals and ideals, but the painful reality is such ideals and noble sentiment has been abused without remorse by Tamilia AND WILL BE AGAIN. It is simply not worth it.

I have seen first hand what Tamilia say about us, what they think of us, what they have done to us, what they want to do to us and I assure you they will not hesitate to stab you in the back after you hand a plate of food to them if it means they not only get to fulfil their supremacists agendas but the food will keep coming regardless.

How quickly people forget the cries and threats of “rivers of Sinhala blood to wash lanka pure to give life to a new Tamil world” and “the do as we say or face bombs and destruction, be prepared for millions of and childrenless parents, parent less children”. In fact they were making these noises all the way to 2007.

A brutal enemy must be crushed and turned into a shell or what it is if they are to be subdued forever, what you are advocated is giving them strength and support to re-build and sustain their hate with the ridiculous idea that will “make them see the light”. They are an ungrateful & abusive people.
I will not stop you making overtures and olive branches to Tamilia, but do not expect me to do the same. It is a fruitless endeavour.

well said pol.

"such ideals and noble sentiment has been abused without remorse by Tamilia" in australia too!!!

it has NOTHING to do with equal rights.

why do they go???

bcos australia's average income is 25 times higher than SL. quality of live 50 times higher. but the real reason is family competition.

when one family has migrated, the other family will do ANYTHING to migrate. otherwise the community laughs at the POOR family.

in modern tamil society, ppl are ranked based on how many kids as a percentage of total number of kids are abroad. the higher the better.

even if one is the CEO of unilevers or CEO of insurance corp, that does not matter.

thangachchi's (beautiful ones) know they have good demand from cananda, UK, aus. so they REFUSE to marry local crap. this makes guys SOMEHOW get to a foreign country.

this is the reality. it has NOTHING to do with SL. SL bashing is continued bcos otherwise they cannot abuse the system.

let me prove it.

most illegal boat buggers are guys. they leave their sisters, mothers, daughters, etc. in SL. IF SL is so bad shouldn't they be taking these HIGHLY VULNERABLE FEMALES with them?????

it is total BS.

look at tamil elamists PEACEFUL demands.

"SL must win their hearts and minds"

what about RESPONSIBILITIES towards SL????

no bugger talks about them!!!

suck the MAXIMUM you can and get out is the motto of some ppl (irrespective of race).

but unfortunately it is very high among NE tamils bcos all govts tried the APPEASEMENT strategy.

the BIGGEST blood sucker parasite vezapillai was born out of this parasite mentality.

[Ananda what are you on about?]

Is that still unclear?

[I am not saying they should be persecuted as implied by the bs in Western media.]

Good .. I was getting worried.

[Tamilia already have equal rights, they want special rights to be MORE EQUAL.]

Yes .. I agree.

[They will always be a massive problem if you think otherwise well go ahead.]

Yes .. it will take a long time for Sri Lankan Tamils to divest themselves of the dreams with which they have been brainwashed by Eelamists from the time of independence.

I say, all of those separatist agendas should be firmly suppressed, while guaranteeing them ONLY EQUAL RIGHTS and enforcing EQUAL RESPONSIBILITIES. That is, prosecute and throw in prison ANYONE that steps out of line by breaking the law of the land.

[Getting rid of them is the best way; let them enjoy a comfy life in Oz!]

You can't "get rid of them" as you say without violating fundamental rights of citizens. If they break the law, you can prosecute them and throw them in prison, or even execute them, if found guilty, but by law you cannot expel them from the country.

However, if they want to leave of their own accord, you can give these deeply dissatisfied people every assistance to emigrate to other lands .. but that choice must be theirs; they should not be forced in any way.

[Besides the ones that leave won't be missed, new batches will constantly be entering SL from TN to replace them :))]

That is why strict monitoring, patrolling, and enforcement of immigration laws is essential with a Strong Military Ran Weta around the entire coastline of the country. There should be no open undefended borders that can be violated at will by illegal immigrants.

[So think of it as a way of keeping things in balance ya?]

Sorry .. the means you are advocating to achieve that balance does not justify the goal; in fact it will only get Sri Lanka in UNNECESSARY HOT WATER.

[On a more serious note if you think they will ever change or have changed or want to go around kissing trees with us then you are dead wrong.]

At no time did I say, nor do I say, that Tamils are, in general, WILLING accept the only option of EQUAL CITIZENSHIP offered to them.

They may not accept it willingly, but that is what they are going to be given .. not one iota more, not one iota less.

They will have to lump their dissatisfaction .. in the full knowledge that they will not get anymore than that in ANY OTHER COUNTRY they will emigrate to, either.

Let them complain till hell boils over; they will not get anything more than equal rights in one country with no barriers to the movement and settlement of people anywhere, and that principle will be strictly enforced.

[They will always be against us, they will always try and undermine us, they will always complain, kill and lie to get what they want. They will only "feel equal" when they come to dominate us.]

You may well be right, and that is why Patriotic Sri Lankans must be forever vigilant, armed and ready to defend the nation.

But, NEVER is a LONG TIME, and anything can happen in the fullness of time, if the Patriots keep FRUSTRATING their designs at EVERY TURN.

Many Southerners in the US, whose ancestors supported the Confederacy, now accept the notion of the United States as ONE INDIVISIBLE COUNTRY .. if only because they see the benefits of living in one country that stretches from ocean to ocean and is accomplishing great things. That outweighs their ancestral regional Southern Pride. It was not so at the conclusion of the Civil War. Even today there are a few "Confederate" websites, maintained by fringe elements, where the Civil War still rages unabated.

[They will never follow law, order and the rest of that jazz. The fact is they see WEAKNESS when such is applied.

The softy softy approach only encourages their current behaviour, thinking and belief they can dominate us hence formulate agendas and actions to fulfil this goal.]

Pol, if they break the law, that provides the acceptable justification for punishing the law breakers with the unremitting force of the law. We must always use means that are legally justifiable, not force that is illegal in itself and cannot be justified to others in the world.

We MUST ALWAYS keep uppermost in mind that Sri Lanka is a very small country compared to others. By acting in justifiable ways, by setting up a defensible concept of governance, and a body of equitable laws to support and maintain it, we can prevent the growth of opposing forces that would overwhelm us. We must be able to demonstrate EQUITY in treatment of ALL citizens; not by giving each community a separate peace of thye country, but giving ALL citizens to share equally in ALL of the country. If we act arbitrarily, outside the norms of civilized behavior, we will only destroy ourselves.

Acting within justifiable laws, is the hallmark of a successful leader; it is also the difference between seasoned politicians and rank dictators.

For example, as a seasoned politician, MR always works within the law, and uses the law itself against his opponents. When he sees defects in the laws, he proposes the Mihinda Chintanaya to address those defects .. by revising and extending the body of laws in a way that assures equal treatment of every citizen, while preseving the integrity of the country and the people as a whole.

People without political experience, or understanding of the global political environment we find ourselves in, behave like a bull-in-a-china-shop, as Sarath Fonseka did, giving their enemies the opportunity to use ethical and moral principles and values, and the force of law against them. In acting outside the law, they destroy themselves.

We should recognize that Sri Lanka does not exist in a global vacuum .. we must always be on the side of justice .. and make it easy for every potential ally every reason to support us.

Strength must be coupled to Wisdom, suppressing arbitrary exercises of ephemeral power.

[Our people have been through enough. Our people have suffered immensely to fill the greed, ego and supremacist desires and self-aggrandisement]

Yes, I agree up to this point, but disagree with your choice of words below .. it is just counterproductive .. and it just pours kerosine on the fire.

Let us move away from calling entire communities bad names .. it was not too long ago that the British colonizers referred to us in the similar ways.

[of a bunch of coolies who do not belong here but comically believe it is their right to subjugate us because they are the chosen one of suddha. I say let suddha & the deep blue sea have em!]

well said pol.]

Moshe,

In cheering Pol Sambol response, you show that you have missed the point. I don't think noble goals and ideals have anything to do with my position.

This is REAL POLITIK that ENABLES Sri Lanka to counter the designs of the Eelamists and the support for them by the Western world.

The only way that Sri Lanka can assure its survival in the future is by moving towards ONE NATION, ONE PEOPLE with ONE SHARED DESTINY, assuring EQUAL RIGHTS and enforcing EQUAL RESPONSIBILITIES for ALL citizens. JUSTICE for ALL is the centerpiece of it.

As in Buddhism, we argue ..

1. Communalism is the CAUSE of Sri Lanka's agony.

2. Elimination of Communalism is the SOLUTION.

3. The METHOD of eradicating Communalism from Sri Lanka is through Ethnic Integration with Recolonization geared to achieving a uniform demographic distribution of the different communities throughout the country.

When EI and Recol is implemented by law, there must be a defensible, equitable and justifiable explanation of it that can be presented to its critics.

The goal is to ensure communal harmony, equal rights and equal responsibilities, just as was done, rather forcefully by Lee Quan Yew, in Singapore.

WHO in the world, including those who advocate an unworkable federal solution fraught with separatist potential, can criticize it as UNFAIR?

The answer is NO ONE! Not the UN, nor our Western Critics. The Eelamists,m especially in the Diaspora, will yell like hell .. so LET THEM!

If the DENIAL of EQUAL RIGHTS, is the ALLEGED reason for the Eelam demand, EI will provide that in a different way without placing the country at risk as in a federal solution, that is unacceptable to the great majority of Sri Lankans.

it has NOTHING to do with equal rights.

why do they go???

bcos australia's average income is 25 times higher than SL. quality of live 50 times higher. but the real reason is family competition.]

Moshe,

Exactly. The Eelamist demands have NOTHING to do with EQUAL RIGHTS.

Nor is their flight abroad in search of EQUAL RIGHTS denied in Sri Lanka, but largely for ECONOMIC benefits. We are agreed.

But, the fake AKLLEGATION of DENIAL of EQUAL RIGHTS in Sri Lanka is the WEAPON against Sri Lanka that they trying to use to get EELAM in some form.

So, how do we counter it?

We PRESENT to the WORLD a proposal for DEFUSING this claim by APPARENTLY moving to solve a largely minimal DISCRIMINATION problem, by setting in place a system to eradicate it where it exists and prevent its growth in the future. In the process, we solve the SEPARATIST problem, PERMANENTLY as well.

How?

Through Ethnic (i.e., National/Community ) Integration and Recolonization geared to ensuring a uniform demographic distribution throughout the country.

We prohibit all communal parties (Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim) and drive communal considerations from the public sphere into the purely personal world, where ethnic pride really belongs.

We enforce compulsory multiculturalism in all activities and institutions in the country. In schools, in government departments, in places of private employment, and in time, in the police and the the armed forces, as well.

We implement EI and Recolonization, just as it was done in Singapore under Lee Qwan Yew.

[How quickly people forget the cries and threats of “rivers of Sinhala blood to wash lanka pure to give life to a new Tamil world” and “the do as we say or face bombs and destruction, be prepared for millions of and childrenless parents, parent less children”. In fact they were making these noises all the way to 2007.]

Pol, I am not one who has forgotten ANY OF THESE THINGS.

[A brutal enemy must be crushed and turned into a shell or what it is if they are to be subdued forever, what you are advocated is giving them strength and support to re-build and sustain their hate with the ridiculous idea that will “make them see the light”. They are an ungrateful & abusive people.]

You misunderstand me. I am not trying to make Sri Lankan Tamils see the light. They are VERY UNLIKELY TO CHANGE for another hundred years.

My CONCERN is the OPINION and SUPPORT of the world at LARGE.

We need their SUPPORT because we are such a small fish awash in a world populated by much bigger sharks.

My CONCERN is how to secure the country, treat the Tamils just as we treat all other citizens, and thereby occupy the MORAL HIGH GROUND when we go before the world to argue our case.

If we fail in that, we are SUNK!

[I will not stop you making overtures and olive branches to Tamilia, but do not expect me to do the same. It is a fruitless endeavour.]

Again, I repeat .. I am not extending olive branches to ANYONE in particular, but I am committed to treating EVERYONE decently, because that is the path towards our own survival. It is called ENLIGHTENED SELF-INTEREST.

We must use force without hesitation, where that is justified, to protect ourselves and secure our country.

In all other cases we must treat all people the way we ourselves would like to be treated, because that is the only path towards our own survival. There are enough people trying to demonize us; let us not give them anymore ammunition.

What I am advocating is guided SOLELY by my understanding of what is required to survive and prosper IN THE LONG TERM, as a NATION and as a PEOPLE in a dangerous world over which we have little control.
