By Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa
President of Sri Lanka
June 18, 2010
As I hoist the national flag today, I recall the cry of victory raised by the entire nation waving the national flag throughout the country one year ago. For the first time in the history of our nation the proud roar of being brought under a single national banner was taken to the entire world by our people. Our national flag fluttered on that occasion in the last breath of those heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the land. Each day, as the sun rises I remember these heroes of war who laid down their lives for the country.
We must also remember that presidents, presidential candidates, ministers, members of parliament and political leaders and intellectuals such as Duraiappah, Amirthalingam, Lakshman Kadirgamar and Neelan Thiruchelvam who faced death at the hands of terrorists are interred in our soil. We also must remember that large numbers of people, including thousands of little children, who were killed by terrorist attacks on villages, streets and highways, also lie buried amongst us. Our land today does not comprise only rock, sand and gravel but the flesh and blood of our ancestors, too.
As long as we remember that those who sacrificed their lives now rest in the soil of our land, I declare with pride that our people shall not leave room for anyone to divide this motherland of ours.
Friends, the strategies to divide our motherland were not limited to the battlefield. This had entered not only our parliament but also factories, schools and even our homes. For thirty long years our people faced this threat in the midst of many obstacles. On some occasions our people even had to face international sanctions.
Our people have faced the worst tragedies in the history of the world. Even at a time when the Sri Maha Bodhi, the Sacred Tooth Relic and Bhikkhus were being assassinated, the community of Bhikkhus living in distant villages did not abandon their sacred responsibility of being the guardians of the nation. They gave guidance and strength to people, who clutching their children had to hide in the forest at night, returned to work their fields at day and protected the villages that would have been the borders of our land. Both in the North and East children who were returning from school were forcibly taken by the terrorists for the war. The mothers in the North and East suffered this loss.
In spite of the bombs being exploded in trains and buses, and air raids, not a single person abandoned their places of work. Terrorists who snatched away the lives and property of our people could not deprive them of determination.
The effort of the terrorists to change our hearts through the pursuit of terror for thirty years did not meet with success. Our children were deprived of their right to learn the history of our nation. The name of King Dutugemunu was demeaned even worse than during the reign of King Elara. Many were the efforts made to make us forget that we are a people who in the past had defeated the most powerful invaders.
Terrorists decapitated the villagers in the North and East. Others who earned dividends from separatists struck at the minds of the people. The determination of the heroic youth of Sri Lanka was blunted by those who spread the belief that going to war against terrorism was a dangerous and unwise task. Films were screened all over the world seeking to humiliate heroes who were disabled in the war. As much as our language, our intellectuals too, were totally ignored. Sons of Sri Lanka were been made to be temporary lodgers in their homeland.
We must be proud that our people did not allow the nation to be divided despite all these challenges that lasted thirty years. The mere recruitment of youth in large numbers to the armed forces and strengthening the forces with more arms was not sufficient. It was necessary to consider this land as part of ourselves. It was necessary to instill the confidence that the nation belongs to the people themselves.
Friends, we inscribed in the Mahinda Chintana the path of bringing back to the nation what was forcibly taken away from us and our nation.
A government that sells the national assets of the country to foreign racketeers, that degrades our national history, that pays no heed or respect to our national language, traditions and values, is not capable of winning such a struggle. Heroism cannot be imported from abroad- it lives in our history and tradition.
In a struggle to liberate one's country, knowing the enemies' terrain alone is not important. It is necessary to understand the heartbeats of the people, their views and aspirations and respect them, too.
The people should have complete faith and confidence that the land that was liberated from terrorism through great sacrifice of life will not be handed over to the forces of separatism again.
One cannot succeed in liberating the motherland by keeping your son at home and getting another's son to fight. When we came forward to liberate the motherland, it was not done thinking that the leader, the people and the country were separate from each other, but was a single entity.
Friends, a year has passed since that glorious victory. But there were attempts to tarnish that victory in the recent past. You are aware of the attempts at the biggest betrayal of bringing the armed forces to disrepute took place. It is an insult to the heroic troops who shed their blood and gave their lives for the country in this great humanitarian operation to say that they shot at terrorist leaders who came carrying white flags. Our armed forces comprise those who went to battle carrying a gun in one hand, the Declaration of Human Rights in the other, as well as taking food for the liberated people of the North and full of human kindness in their hearts.
It is only those who have hatred towards the country and nation can betray such heroes. The beneficiaries of such a great betrayal will only be the separatists.
But my dear friends, it is with the same satisfaction that I felt when we won the humanitarian operation that I am pleased to say today that the people of this country have accepted the great challenge of protecting this glorious victory.
I believe the people of this country will stand firm as a solid fortification around the government and the security forces who won the country for them.
Friends, we are aware that some countries being battered by terrorism have taken strength and courage from these victories won by Sri Lanka. It is time for the countries facing the attacks of terrorism to look back and see where they have gone wrong.
It is a grave error of judgment to think that while been opposed to terrorism targeting you, to believe that terrorism that is no threat to you is good.
The world has so far trod on this wrong path. Terrorism remains unvanquished because of this incorrect thinking. I must state that the countries that show sympathy towards terrorism and separatism will be the victims of terrorism. This is the lesson of the history.
Friends, what those from abroad who seek to strengthen separatism are really doing is, to once again corral the people of the north into camps.
The world should look into what happened to all the aid that was given as relief for the Tamil people of the North. For thirty long years they did not see the development of roads, electricity and schools. It is now seen how all those funds went for the luxury, pleasure and overindulgence of separatists and for them to deprive the people of the North of their freedom.
Friends, the problems of the Tamil people, Muslims and all others who are born and live in this country cannot be a burden to those outside. It is our own responsibility to solve the problems of our people. It did not take us long to restore normalcy to the East that was affected by terrorism. We shall next resolve the problems faced from terrorism by the people in the North, by the end of this year.
Many who went to the North are satisfied with the work done by the government towards the welfare of the displaced people. We have already appointed an Independent Commission to inquire into the causes that led to terrorism, the lessons we can learn from this, and reconciliation. It is our intent to make the people in the North be the most pleased by this victory over terrorism. It is understood by all that we carried out this great humanitarian operation only to eliminate terrorism. We left no room for even one bullet to be fired against ordinary citizens. Therefore, we consider this day as one which unites all our people.
The conditions laid before us holding this country to ransom with the threat of terrorism are not valid anymore. There is a government and people today ready to make any sacrifice to safeguard the freedom of this country.
We are not ready to accept aid under conditions that will betray the freedom of our land and people. We must be ready to end the era of dependence on aid.
Friends, it is not to idly waste our time that we liberated this land. It was not to hand over the country to thieves, crooks, the corrupt and those of the underworld and also not to waste our time in lethargy.
More than 200,000 in our armed forces have given Sri Lanka a victory through their commitment through day and night in good weather and bad. These heroes are our children born in our own villages.
Our public service has six times the manpower of the armed forces. They are also our own children born in our own villages. If our public servants make a commitment for four years similar to that by our heroic forces we will be able make this country the Wonder of Asia.
Friends, you should be well aware of the challenges that lie ahead. We went to battle under the slogan, 'Api Wenuwen Api'. Similarly, in building the nation and country we must line up under the slogan, 'We for the Country'. Many countries in the world have developed through the extra-ordinary endeavors of their people. We, who have astonished the world through success in our humanitarian operation, must do so in development, too. We must surprise the world through the unthinkable.
It is only those of us who are born in this country that have the will to build this country. People of our country have the strength and courage to build this country. What is only needed is the will.
Yes! What is most needed to prevent the shedding of blood and tears for the country is to restore the hearts shattered by violence and ease such pain. I am confident that the Sri Lankan nation has the will to achieve this.
Heroic Troops, we had a past full of valor, heroism and courage. But we have such qualities in which we can take pride, today. In the future when there is a need for the Sri Lankan nation to launch an incomparable battle to protect this land, they will recall with pride and take courage from the heroism displayed by you today. Even if you die you will not lie in a grave but in our hearts that love our land.

«Oldest ‹Older 601 – 632 of 632This may not be news but it very interesting to see the latest role of Lanka-Eccentric-News to come out in support of Monkey Boon and EU. Unless it is gene therapy to alter the anti -SL gene of these bastards, they will never change their blatant anti SL and pro white master attitude.
Chaps, I hope we can get this pushed through as well. If this happens Monkey boy will have Russia, China, and 118 NAM countries to face up to. Jolly good show.
Cheers!
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is heading for a second round of political brawling with the powerful 118-member Non- Aligned Movement (NAM) over his decision to appoint a panel of experts to advise him on possible violations of humanitarian law by the Sri Lankan military during the concluding stages of its war against Tamil separatists last May.
A draft letter of protest, currently in circulation among NAM members, expresses "serious concern" about the appointment of the panel "against the clearly expressed wishes of the country concerned, and without any mandate from the Human Rights Council, the Security Council or the General Assembly".
The letter will be formally submitted to the secretary- general next week provided there are no objections from any NAM members.
Asked for his comments, U.N. spokesperson Farhan Haq told IPS: "As far as I am aware, discussion is still going on in NAM about the letter."
"I am not aware whether the membership agreed to it or not," he said.
NAM is the largest single political coalition at the United Nations, after the Group of 77, a 130-member economic coalition of developing countries.
A diplomatic source told IPS: "We hear the secretary- general's office is upset with the letter."
He also said the U.N. secretariat is apparently arguing that the NAM letter will jeopardise Ban's plans to appoint a similar international panel to investigate charges of war crimes against Israel over last month's attack on a flotilla of ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.
But the proposed panel to investigate Israel was authorised by the Security Council while Sri Lanka's panel wasn't.
KB,
hope it will all go well for MOST UN members.
we can teach monkey boon a lesson.
Anandasangaree has opened his mouth over Military bases.
It is good to see many Sinhalese hounding this fellow. It is also good to see little to no opposition to colonisation + understanding Tamil hypocrisy –with Tamils colonising the South but wanting special treatment (special rights?) to the North & East –typical. Perhaps this is a covert understanding + advocating the need for colonisation to alter ethic ratios -as Ninja said rightly needs to be 60%+ in all districts. Many Sinhalese are alert to the hypocrisy and deceitful nature of Tamils which is good.
Still I believe what is being done (colonisation + Army bases) is not enough. Our economic prosperity (or peace dividend as Moshe calls it) is in the North & East and securing those resources for the benefit of the nation. Nevertheless if what is being reported is taking place at a pace that is a good START. Need MORE.
I have submitted some comments to the topic -hope Adaderana accepts them. They censored my comments on the EU for some reason :((

[the rest of the "arguments" by ananda are just an ego thing]
Moshe, my EGO is very much under control .. no thanks for misunderstanding.
It does irk me that you have failed to understand and appreciate the BIG DIFFERENCE between pursuing gung-ho colonization .. damn the consequences to Sri Lanka .. without the protection of an EI National Policy.
I fear that you will never understand, or acknowledge, that difference. C'est La Vie!
My EGO is the the very last thing driving my comments on EI, and activities at this blog. The needs of my EGO were fully satisfied a VERY LONG TIME AGO!
I have long learned to suppress my personal feelings and needs in favor of the needs of Sri Lanka.
Despite what some of you may think .. I am quite ready to walk away from this blog and other Sri Lankan initiatives I have started with NO REGRETS .. if I feel that my presence does not serve the best interests of Sri Lanka.
In fact, I am sacrificing my valuable time here that I would rather spend publishing professional papers and books, and having fun with my R&D projects.
I persist ONLY out of a desire to SUSTAIN the PATRIOTIC spirit, and DEFEND Sri Lanka which is still not out of the woods populated by its enemies.
My EGO, however, plays no part in my participation.
@Sam,
GL Peris has been under SCATHING attacks from the UNP (and UNP media, such as DailyMail/SundayTimes) ever since he went to the EU to fight for the GSP+.
None stop for mouths has the SundayTimes political column launched scathing attacks on him.
They are FURIOUS with him for challenging their white masters and at every turn try to DESTROY and humiliate him, especially because he is defending Sri Lanka very strongly (i never believed he would be so tough and brilliant in front of suddha) against their white masters. Such servility and slavery is just unbelievable.
CBK = Fonseka "light" V.2:
Will CBK contest again for Presidency?
http://www.adaderana.lk/news.php?nid=8795#
She wants to contest because West will give her $400 million like they gave Fonny and let her be a dictator ruling with an iron fist (like she and other Colombians leaders are). They are so desperate to get rid of MR they will do anything LOL. And our dirty Colombian clan loves free money from their white masters as well as being good mental slaves to them. So it is a "win win"

[I fully back colonisation to which Ananda is so against.]
Pol,
Again you are MISREPRESENTING what I have said repeatedly, perhaps intentionally because you are too smart not to have understood what I have said.
Let me make this CLEAR to you ONE LAST TIME:
I support resettlement (a.k.a colonization without its bad historical connotations} PROVIDED it is implemented using state-owned land under the umbrella of Ethnic Integration declared in writing as a National Policy, and our "political solution" to communal divisions in Sri Lanka.
I am opposed only to settlement in the ABSENCE OF a declared EI Policy, because it will immediately cause insurmountable problems for Sri Lanka internationally, that Sri Lanka will be unable to confront and overcome successfully. I have EXPLAINED why in detail elsewhere.
I am also opposed to the USE OF THE WORD "colonization" because that word has a bad historical connotation of imperialists colonizing and exploiting poor underdeveloped people and countries all over the world. Sri Lanka is one example of such a country.
We don't need to place the crown of thorns of "colonization" on Sri Lanka's innocent head. INSTEAD, we can use a less explosive words such as settlement and resettlement.
Soon, MPs will not be able to say one thing to the people, and another in Parliament. Their speech and their votes will be more VISIBLE to their constituents.

Sri Lanka parliament to release MPs' speeches online
ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
July 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka's state-owned Sinhala daily The Dinamina reported today that a proposal has been mooted by the ruling party to immediately post online the speeches delivered by the parliamentarians.
The proposal has been submitted to the Speaker by the Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena on behalf of the ruling party.
The Dinamina said that the proposal is pending approval of the Speaker.
Parliamentary speeches can be read in Hanzard but they are not immediately released and also are not easily accessible for the public. No credible online source is available regarding the speeches delivered in parliament sans media reports that have been subjected to severe editing.
The Bleeding Hearts of the EU can now stand proudly knowing that they have struck a blow against some of the most economically vulnerable people in Sri Lanka .. including IDPs in the North and East!
I YEARN for the day, when Sri Lanka can stand TOE-TO-TOE with these HYPOCRITES and have them BEGGING for access to Sri Lanka's GOODS, SERVICES & MARKETS!
THIS is what the NEXT DECADE represents .. and why we MUST GET OUR ACT TOGETHER with BRAINS not BRAWN!

Sri Lanka ready to face challenges posed by the withdrawal of GSP+
ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
July 02, Colombo" Sri Lanka says it is ready to face the challenges imposed on the country's industrial sector by the withdrawal of the European Union's trade concession Generalised System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) scheme.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) issuing a statement on Thursday (01) to clarify the position with regard to the GSP+ scheme's impact on the country said it has regularly cautioned all stakeholders about the inherent uncertainties surrounding the continuation of the GSP+ facility, and advised all to prepare for the inevitability of the discontinuation of the scheme.
"As a consequence, this issue has been discussed widely over the past two years, and the government, CBSL as well as many Sri Lankan exporters to the EU have already taken many measures to deal with this risk," the Bank said.
The EU has told Sri Lanka the GSP+ benefits would end on August 15, 2010 if the government does not address 15 conditions put forward by the EU. The EU requested the Sri Lankan government to respond to their conditions by July 01.
The Sri Lankan government rejected the conditions set by the EU to extend the trade facility saying that the demands are politically motivated and unacceptably intrusive into the country's affairs.
The CBSL says the government has already taken several measures to counter the losses due to the withdrawal of GSP+ concession.
According to the Bank, ending the three-decade long armed conflict has significantly improved the Sri Lankan business environment and confidence levels as opposed to the environment prevailed when the GSP+ facility was granted following the devastation by the tsunami in 2004.
In addition the CBSL has brought down the inflation to single digits significantly reducing the pressure on cost of inputs and maintained low interest rates reducing the cost of borrowing substantially.
The CBSL further pointed out that it has managed to build up foreign reserves to historically high levels enhancing the investor confidence in the Sri Lankan economy and had ensured the stability in the Sri Lanka rupee exchange rate, enhancing predictability of the domestic foreign exchange market.
The country has achieved an unprecedented political stability currently which improves the confidence and reduce policy uncertainties, the Bank said.
Further measures include getting Sri Lanka removed from the underwriters' list of "high war risk" countries, improving internal work processes, and systems of exporting entities, leading to substantial productivity enhancements and establishing an enabling environment where Sri Lankan businesses could access international capital and debt markets for funding requirements at lower costs.
The CBSL further pointed out that the apparel exports to EU countries constituted about 50 percent of total apparel exports in 2009 and only 60 percent of that benefitted from GSP+ scheme.
The Bank said that Sri Lankan garment industry has faced challenges before and not only they adjusted but emerged even stronger and expanded their share in the world markets. This time too, with the favorable conditions prevailing in the country now and with the measures taken by the government, the industries will likely to overcome the non-GSP+ challenge, and emerge even stronger.
BS!
The AFL-CIO is protecting American Jobs which people in the USA now need!
But, it in REALITY it is ORCHESTRATED by the US NOW to put pressure on Sri Lanka in concert with the EU!

Sri Lanka trade union says dismal conditions in apparel sector led to US GSP review
ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
July 02, Colombo: A leading trade union in Sri Lanka says the pathetic labor situation in the apparel industry was the main reason for the United States government to accept a petition from the American labor union, AFL-CIO requesting the suspension of GSP benefit to Sri Lanka.
In a press release issued today, the Lankan (TUC) says that the AFL-CIO submitted the complaint to the US government as all efforts of local unions to address issues with Sri Lankan labour authorities failed despite repeated attempts.
"This petition could have been avoided if local labour authorities took immediate actions regarding this matter and acted effectively and impartially," the TUC said.
The United States announced on June 30 that its Trade Representative (USTR) has accepted a petition from American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) to review whether Sri Lanka met Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) eligibility criteria related to worker rights in 2009.
The TUC says that since these international violations and exploitations have been exposed it is no longer possible to sweep these issues under the carpet or to cover them up with fake PR campaigns such as "garments without guilt".
"The time has come for all stakeholders in the labour sector to accept the situation," the TUC said urging all employers of the apparel sector to recognize trade unions, stop anti-union discriminations and respect ILO principles on Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining.
The trade union expressed hope that the government will accept the situation and will communicate with the US Government authorities to come to a reasonable solution and save the GSP benefit.
The USTR said the acceptance of the petition is not a decision to revoke GSP and it does not set a deadline for a decision on action on GSP privileges.
A formal, collaborative process to work with the Sri Lankan government to address the concerns in the petition and work to improve support of and adherence to worker rights will begin, but the GSP privileges will continue throughout the process, the US said.
Patriots,
I have posted a new article. Please shift over to that article. Thx.
Found this in Divaina. It is a touchy story. But the key point is that the father of family is a SLA soldier. Up until now there was no support from SLA or any movement that talks about war heroes [as per news].
Pls do what you can.
