The Silent Revolution of 2010...

By Diyasena

With the results of the 2010 General election published, the governing United People's Freedom alliance (UPFA) has recorded an unprecedented victory in recent election history. When the results of the two annulled electorates are announced, and the national list allocations are completed, the UPFA is expected to get a massive 144-146 seats out of 225.

Mage Mathru Bhumiya Dinewa!

Epic victory

The UPFA victory eclipses the previous record for the highest number of seats obtained by a winning party (ie, the United National Party's 125 seats in 1989) under the proportional representation (PR) system of 1978. It also debunks the myth that strong governments cannot be formed under the PR system.

The number of seats obtained by the UPFA does not reflect the full grandeur of the victory. They carried 135 of 158 electorates (similar to the 5/6 victory of UNP in 1977). Their winning percentage of 60.4%, and margin of 1.8 million (against the aggregates of all other parties), are unprecedented as well. One might complain that the turnout was comparatively low. However this was to be expected after the presidential election, and compared to other democracies in the world, 55% is by no means a low turnout. Moreover, if one looks at the results carefully, it is apparent at roughly similar numbers of government and opposition supporters stayed home on election day, compared to the Presidential Election on January 26, 2010.

The victorious UPFA

As requested by the president, the people have given the UPFA a strong Electroral Mandate, thereby ensuring 6 more years of stable rule. The leaders of the government have to realize that this is the last election they can market the war victory for votes. Other issues will take center stage in subsequent elections:

1. The economy- The government will hopefully be able to reap in the benefits of the infrastructure developments and economic growth over the next six years. The peace dividend should filter down to the masses, who richly deserve it.

2. Corruption and thuggery- The UPFA voters themselves have voted out some of the corrupt and inefficient ministers of the previous government. However, some errant characters who are locally popular have been elected. The government should rein in these MPs, and project the image of a true people's government. With a strong government, the president has the luxury of appointing a small cabinet. The choosing of suitable and efficient ministers, as well as a capable prime minister, will be very important for the future of the UPFA government.

3. The Eelam struggle- Though the armed struggle was extinguished last year, the diaspora Tamils backed by western powers still plot and scheme to divide the island. Whilst countering these threats externally, the government must strive to eliminate the root cause of the problem through ethnic integration (ie, via strategic re-colonization, increasing contact and empathy between communities, and economic development).

UNP: A toothless opposition.

The UNP hurtled towards it's worst defeat since the PR system was introduced, and is expected to win only 58-60 seats. They won only 9 electorates, reminiscent of their rout at the hands of the SLFP in 1956. If the UNP is to make a comeback, a total makeover is necessary. It is unlikely that Ranil Wickremsinghe could ever lead the UNP to victory at an election. By not electing some of his cronies (Vajira Abeywardane, Sagala Rathnayake), the UNP voters have also sent their leadership message. Moreover, the so called 'Kepuwath Kola' generation of rural UNP-er are dying out (literally) leaving only the Colombo-centric supporters. Unless new leaders such as Sajith Premadasa, or Dayasiri Jayasekara, are given priority and leadership oppotunities, Sri Lanka risks becoming a one party state.

JVP: Saving face

Many of the readers may disagree, but the JVP has to a certain degree saved-face at this election. They are likely to win 7 seats, which is far better than the 1-3 they were initially projected to win. It seems, apart from their own hardcore cadre, about 200,000 Fonseka sympathizers voted for them as well. Thus, they have saved themselves from political irrelevance for another six years. Until such time their trade and student unions are dismantled, the JVP will continue to play a role in Sri Lanka's political landscape.

ITAK/TNA : The last throw of the dice..

Without any LTTE firepower to back them up, the ITAK(TNA)'s seats in the North and East were reduced from 22 to 14. Moreover, they polled less than 50% in the Tamil heartland of Jaffna, and less than 40% in the other districts they contested. In fac,t with 4000 or so more votes, the UPFA could have wrested victory from the ITAK in the Vanni and Batticaloa districts. With the new census to be conducted in 2011, the number of seats allocated to the North is expected to drop by about 4 (Jaffna -3, Vanni- 1), whilst Battticaloa would likely lose 1 seat as well. Therefore, coupled to the moderating influence of ethnic integration in future years, the influence of TNA is likely to be further diluted in subsequent elections. Therefore, they will be hellbent in their effort to preserve their mono-ethnic fiefdom, by agitating for a federal solution. We call upon the government to frustrate their communal and separatist designs at every turn.

Conclusion

The results of this election will greatly influence the destiny of Sri Lanka in the coming years. If the government lives up to it's great potential, the Silent Revolution of 2010 will far outshine the achievements of the 1956 and 1977 electoral revolutions. Let us hope that all goes well for our motherland, and that our children one day will proudly call themselves "Dedahas Dahaye' Daruwo!"

Moshe,

Are you REALLY proposing such an honor for these MONSTERS? With tongue-in-cheek, I have no DOUBT!

I am TOTALLY against HONORING VP & his murderous crew IN ANY WAY.

That would be tantamount to asking the Jews to put up a plaque honoring Hitler & the Nazis .. NO WAY!

INSTEAD, the GOSL should set up an EELAM HOLOCAUST MUSEUM in Kilinochchi to permanently document and display the killings, the torture chambers, the brainwashed kidnapped child soldiers, and the walking suicide bombers, to cite a partial list, to ensure such things will never happen again in Sri Lanka.

One goal should be to crucify the LTTE, its Sun God, and its Diaspora supporters, as GENOCIDAL MONSTERS.

All foreign ambassadors should be required to offer their condolences at this site, and it should be mandatory for every school child in Sri Lanka to visit this Museum.

These crimes should NEVER BE ALLOWED TO FADE in the memory of the world. This should be ONE WEAPON deployed as a counter to the human rights accusations engineered by the Eelamists.

Does that grab your mind, Moshe?

UNP and JVP is campaigning for Obama to resign since voter participation was in US Presidential elections usually around 55%.

Since by voter apathy the voters have rjected the Government it means that the voters stayed at home because they wanted to show their enthusiastic support to SF and Ranil.

Further election laws should be changed the % of voter non participation to be added to SF and Ranil since they are true Srun God and devotee.

We have all kinds of retards trying to "interpret" the election results to their own benefits.

These white apes in particular are trying to twist it around as if they have influence. For example the US saying " (MR) fulfil his promises on improving human rights"?

One of the fundamental reasons MR got such a huge mandate was to stop interference in our countries affairs and PREVENT these white apes from violating our human rights.

All this "praise" from the US is a carefully laden trap which I hope the Government does not fall for.

You will notice they have twisted to their own benefit the meaning of the election results with their own views and tried to inject them into the results –as if people & MR listened to the US (who in reality wield no power, influence or authority over SL) and want "improvement in human rights" and "power sharing with Tamils and muslims" (Blakes Statements) as well as blindly following the rest of the Wests FAILED hegononomic neo-colonial ideologies to turn us into a puppet state in more ways than one. All of this Rajapakse outright rejected with pro-Lankan polices which the people of Sri Lanka overwhelming endorsed twice when they voted for him at the PE and GE.

Thus when Rajapakse starts to fulfil his REAL mandate (which the Wests knows very well what it is and that he will fulfil it), they will have thus ceded artificial ground to attack him and say "MR is not doing x, y, and z" then toss in "going against his campaign pledges and mandate given to him by the people" to launch a fresh wave of attacks against the country (as well as "punishments") as done before during the last 4 years. Once more we are seeing these democracy preachers trying to deny and camouflage the democratic will off our people.

Sudan is an oil rich country that awarded oil contracts to China who out bided Western companies.

Low behold a "high intensity" civil war starts.
South Sudan has the largest reserves of hydrocarbons and now wants a "secede". You will find plenty of Western "humanitarian NGOs" in these places brainwashing people, filling their heads with stupid ideas and using FOOD as a WEAPON. (They did this in Zimbabwe; vote for MDC and get FOOD, the Cholera epidemic which hit Zim a little over a year ago was also rumoured to have been brought by these filthy suddhas).

These regions in Sudan had autonomous weirdoes and gangs roaming around who patrolled desert, extorted travellers, did a few abductions here and there for money etc etc, basically they were street gangs and other lowlifes with no real power or authority but just wanting money and the sense of power over their turf. The West through their NGOs, funded backed, encouraged and turned these gangs into proper "armed forces" to attack Khartoum. To bad for them Khartoum had no problem bitch slapping the whole lot back.

The "war crimes" claim against the current Sudanese President came after he repeatedly gave the finger to the West and kept on handing over contract after contract as well multiple development projects to China.

These white morons think Africa is their property for them to do as they please. They were in a rude shock when China suddenly "seized" control of the continent and now are comically lecturing China about "robbing resources from Africa", "abusing human rights" etc etc. In places like CAR and Chad, Angola they fund NGOs "to monitor and provide accountability of Government projects and investments" aka spy on Chinese activities. Worse these NGOs spread hatred amongst the various tribes -saying China/Government in charge is favour tribe B & C over D & A then getting them to attack each other, stage riots/protests then have these people interviewed and be "sources/witnesses" against "evil China pillaging Africa". They then play these tapes to other Africans and try and turn the populace against China projecting the illusion of "the new coloniser ready to carve up Africa" and of course suddha is the saviour here to protect them.

Similar thing happened in Papua New Guinea with Chinese being attacked by angry Papua New Guineans for no reason other than "we were told they are doing bad things".

Basil Rajapaksa next Sri Lankan PM?

P K Balachandran
April 13, 2010

COLOMBO: Speculation is rife in Sri Lankan political circles about who will be the Prime Minister following the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance’s landslide victory in the April 8 parliamentary elections.

Names which are doing the rounds in the media are Basil Rajapaksa, President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s brother, chief advisor and long time campaign manager; Maithripala Sirisena, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) general secretary; Nimal Sripala de Silva, former leader of the House and health minister; D M Jayaratne, senior SLFP leader and former minister; and Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, former Prime Minister.

STRONG CONTENDER: Basil Rajapaksa is thought be the strongest contender. He had got the largest number of preferential votes in the elections (425,861).

He has been Mahinda Rajapaksa’s election campaign manager for long. He is the President’s brother, confidante and the most trusted agent. It is pointed out that Sri Lankan Presidents have always appointed the most trusted person as the Prime Minister Though the post of Prime Minister is not important in Sri Lanka (as all constitutional power is vested in the elected Executive President), it has great “political potential”. In the absence of a vice president, the Prime Minister is next only to the President in the constitutional pecking order and is a potential successor. If Rajapaksa has to have a trustworthy person as Prime Minister, Basil fills the bill admirably. However, Basil suffers from one drawback: He has never been a minister and he had entered parliament very recently.

LEADERS WITH BASE: Maithripala Sirisena is a senior SLFP leader with great ministerial experience.

He had also got the largest number of preferential votes in his electoral district of Polannaruwa (90,118). Former heath minister and leader of the House, Nimal Sripala de Silva, is a senior leader who had topped the party list in Badulla District bagging 141,990 preferential votes. However, there is always the danger that such leaders may harbour greater political ambitions and flaunt their electoral achievements to the discomfiture of the President.

SAFE BET: D M Jayaratne is a senior and non-controversial politician who poses no threat whatsoever to Rajapaksa. He also comes from the politically important Kandy district, which the President has to keep in good humour to prevent it from swinging back to the opposition United National Party.

However, despite the choices available, Rajapaksa may, at the end of the day, stick to the tried and tested Ratnasiri Wickramayanake who had played second fiddle perfectly, since he was appointed Prime Minister in 2005.

Post-election Sri Lanka turns on critics

By Munza Mushtaq
AsiaTimes.com
April 14, 2010

COLOMBO - Boosted by a yet to be finalized landslide victory in last week's Sri Lankan parliamentary elections, the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is already taking on the world, especially the West's finger pointing-over the South Asian nation's human-rights record.

Addressing a news conference in Colombo soon after registering victory, senior members of President Mahinda Rajapaksa's administration demanded "international forces" to stop dictating terms to Sri Lanka. "The international community must respect the people's mandate and we appeal to them not to bother us," said Transport Minister Dullas Allahapperuma.

Another senior government member, Dinesh Gunawardena, declared that anti-national forces were at work to oust the Rajapaksa government, and singled out Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband. "But they can't defeat us, and neither can they continue to dictate terms on us. The people are satisfied with President Rajapaksa and his government and they have re-elected us, these foreign nations should stop meddling their fingers in our internal affairs," he said.

The government's angry outburst also came just hours after the United States, while congratulating the Rajapaksa administration on its re-election, urged the government to ensure securing human-rights in the island. Sri Lanka also crossed swords with the British government after Miliband attended a meeting of a Tamil group in London that it considers a front for the defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

"The United States congratulates President Rajapaksa and the United People's Freedom Alliance for their historic victory in the first nationwide parliamentary election in decades. This victory, coupled with the president's win in January's [presidential] contest, provides a mandate to move forward on the important issues the president discussed during the campaign, such as national and ethnic reconciliation, decentralizing power, economic development, and securing human rights," the statement issued from the US Embassy in Colombo said.

In the historic victory on April 8, the Rajapaksa-led party polled over 4.7 million votes, 60.43% of those polled to take 117 seats out of 196 in parliament, while the main opposition United National Party (UNP) garnered 46 seats from just over 2.3 million votes. However, record low turnout marred the ballot, with only half the total 14 million registered voters exercising their franchise.

Results in two districts out of the 22 in the country were annulled by the Elections Commissioner due to large-scale rigging, including allegations of ballot box stuffing by government members, and the final result is expected to be released on April 20, the day scheduled for the re-poll for the two districts.

The government is expected to obtain around 130 seats after the re-polling. However, Rajapaksa wants 150 seats in parliament (which will give him a two-thirds majority) so he will have the mandate to change the constitution to allow him to hold a third term. A president is permitted to hold only two terms under the present constitution.

Post-election Sri Lanka turns on critics

..............
The UPFA's general secretary, Susil Premajayantha, noted that it was the first time since 1978 that a single political party had won such a massive number of seats in a parliamentary election.

Last week's vote also elected many new and colorful faces to parliament, including popular Sri Lankan cricketer, Sanath Jayasuriya, several actors and actresses, a former beauty queen, the president's eldest son - and even a former army commander who is currently in military custody.

General Sarath Fonseka, the ex-army commander who steered the victory against the LTTE last May and was defeated as a presidential candidate, secured a little over 98,000 votes. His party, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), said his election was the public's verdict that it was time the government released him from custody - an appeal flatly turned down.

Fonseka is in custody for allegedly committing military offences, including being involved in political activities while serving as the commander of the Sri Lankan army.

Meanwhile, as pressure mounts over human-rights violations allegedly committed during the final phase of the war against the LTTE, United Nations general secretary Ban Ki-moon has announced that he will go ahead with his decision to appoint an expert panel to advise on action concerning Sri Lanka's "accountability issues" during the conflict.

Rajapaksa last month telephoned Ban to declare the move as "unwanted and unwarranted", but many countries, including the United States, Britain and the European Union, back the UN chief's decision. The UN has also decided to send a senior official to Colombo this month with regard to setting up the expert panel.

Boosted by victory at the polls, Rajapaksa has promised to work towards reconciliation and development.

"The assured majority in parliament given by the voters encourages the government to proceed with its policies for the strengthening of peace and reconciliation, reconstruction ... and the overall development of the country to make it the center of economic and social progress in South Asia," Rajapaksa said.

Ratnasiri tipped to be PM again; no portfolios for new comers

Namal to remain an ordinary MP
New ministers for Health, Education

Former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka will be appointed Prime Minister of the new UPFA government to be formed on April 21, The Island reliably learns. Although there are several contenders for the post, including former Minister D. M. Jayaratne, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to reappoint Wickramanayake PM because he is acceptable to all SLFPers and the appointment of someone else is likely to lead to resentment among aspirants for the second most powerful position in country, according to sources close to the President.

President Rajapaksa would limit his new Cabinet to 35-40 members with an equal number of deputies in spite of pressure mounting on him to accommodate many more and none of the first timers in Parliament would be appointed as either ministers or deputy ministers, sources said. That rule would apply to the President’s eldest son, Namal Rajapaksa as well, they said.

Namal polled the highest number of preferential votes (147,566) in the Hambantota District beating all party seniors in the fray including his paternal uncle Chamal Rajapaksa, who is a former senior minister.

Sources quoted President Rajapaksa as having told his confidantes yesterday that the number of preferential votes or family ties would not be the basis on which ministerial appointments were made.

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva would not get the Health portfolio in the new Cabinet. .

Instead, he would get some other ministry, sources said. The education sector would also get a new minister and former Minister of Education Susil Premjayantha would be given a different ministry, they said.

Sri Lanka governing party will not appoint defeated candidates to parliament through National List

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

The UPFA is likely to get 17 National List slots,

Apr 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance yesterday (11) said that party candidates who were defeated at the general election would not be accommodated on the National List to enter the parliament.

Governing party spokesperson and former Minister Dullas Alahapperuma told the media in response to a question that the party had taken a firm decision not to appoint any defeated candidate to parliament through the National List.

A questioned was posed by the media following speculation in political circles that former Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama was trying to secure a slot in the UPFA National List.

Four cabinet ministers including Bogollagama and former Justice Minister Milinda Moragoda lost their seats at the election.

The number of national list MPs allocated to a party depends on the number of votes the party received at the election. The UPFA is likely to get 17 National List slots as the party has secured about 62 percent of the votes.

A total of 29 National List MPs will be appointed to the 225-member parliament alongside with the 196 elected members.

The UPFA's National List comprises Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka, D.M. Jayaratna, Dullas Alahapperuma, G.L. Peiris M.H. New Parliament, New Hopes, New Fears

By Amantha Perera
IPSnews.net
April 13, 2010

Voter turnout in the Apr. 8 election was one of the lowest in Sri Lanka's post- independence history. But the result was a landslide win that has strengthened the hand of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s administration like never before.

Of the 14 million eligible to vote, only 59 percent marked on the ballot card to select 225 members for the country’s Parliament.

The ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) coalition was the clear winner. It already has 117 seats, a clean majority in the Parliament though 45 seats are still to be announced.

The main opposition party, the United National Party (UNP), secured 46 seats, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), a coalition that backed the candidacy of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, five seats, and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the main party representing the minority Tamil community, 12.

Fonseka, who contested while under military custody and facing charges of corruption and politicising the military, won from the Colombo district.

"We are humbled by the size of the repeated mandates given by the people and pledge to respond, in full measure, to the trust placed in us," Rajapaksa said in a message soon after it was clear that he had achieved an assailable majority.

Stalwarts from his coalition said that the executive presidency and parliament now had a chance to work together without one undermining the other.

"There has never been such a large victory, the people have spoken," said UPFA senior Dulles Alahaperuma at a press conference two days after the election. "The international community should respect the verdict and support government policies."

The Rajapaksa administration has thrived on standing firm against what it perceives as unwarranted international interference. It locked horns with the United Nations, United States, European Union and Britain when the armed forces’ conduct in the last phase of the civil war with the separatist Tamil Tigers came under scrutiny.

The most recent confrontation has been Rajapaksa’s opposition to moves by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to form an advisory committee on Sri Lanka.

The government said that the overwhelming victory was a sign of clear support for its policies and sought cooperation from opposition parties to press ahead with its development plans. Rajapaksa had made development a key campaign slogan.

"Campaigns have concluded and people have given their verdict and now it’s time to think clearly and plan a better future for people in the country," said Basil Rajapaksa, the president’s brother, who received over 425,000 preference votes.

The new government will have to deliver on the peace dividend and speed up reconstruction work in war-ravaged areas. Rajapaksa has hinted that he was willing to discuss with the Tamil minority ways to address its grievances.

Election observers concluded that polling was conducted in a free and fair manner. "Polling on Election Day took place in a generally uneventful manner, except for a few significant incidents," the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said in its report at the conclusion of the polls.

"We conclude that despite this (incidents that undermined the election), the overall result does reflect the will of the electorate," the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said.

But both groups noted incidents of vote-rigging and intimidation. "We wish to record our deep concern about incidents in which polling agents were evicted from polling stations, sometimes forcefully. Furthermore, there were cases of voter obstruction and alleged attempts to rig the results," CMEV said.

New Parliament, New Hopes, New Fears
...........
The Elections Commissioner has delayed issuing the results of the vote 45 seats where the worst incidents were reported.

Monitors have also raised concerns over the low voter turnout. The 59 percent turnout was a huge drop from the more than 70 percent recorded in January’s presidential polls. Over 74 percent voted during the last general election in 2004. PAFFREL calculated that the turnout in the April vote could drop to 54 percent after the final results.

Keerthi Thenakoon, the head of the Centre for Free and Fair Election (CAFFE), feels that the voters showed a distinct disinterest this time. "The presidential election was much more intense. There was more interest on the part of the voters as well."

The January presidential poll saw Rajapaksa face a challenge from Fonseka. The two were credited with leading the final battles against the Tigers, which had fought a bloody sectarian war for over two and half decades for a separate Tamil homeland.

Rajapaksa had gained widespread support for giving political leadership during the war and for refusing to bow to international pressure when the Tigers were down for the count. Fonseka was the man credited with leading the battle on the ground.

The war ended in May 2009. By December, the two had fallen out and Fonseka staked a claim for the presidency. In the end, Rajapaksa got 57 percent of the vote against Fonseka’s 40 percent. Subsequently, Fonseka was arrested by the military and is now facing a double court marshal.

"There was no such intensity with this election. Maybe the people had lost interest." CAFFE’s Thenakoon said.

UPFA member Allaheruma mused: "There was peace in the country and the winner was very clear. That may be the reason why we did not see many voting." (END)

Moshe as you are sort of “connected” to the powers that be in SL where they count can you warn them about the latest US moves (also what are you thoughts on them)? I am deeply concerned that this Government will idiotically think the US/West “has seen the light” (as in MRs has mass support) and so is “changing its approach” when the US/West obviously is not and will not. But as we saw with the Kelly “report” the Government will think they have scored a victory when it is an own goal taking place.

They (West/US) are acting as if their “influence” some how shaped the election and MR’s promises + mandate/support from the people. Hence bs interpretations such as “fulfil promises on national reconciliation and human rights” (see my earlier posts). Clearly the stage is being set to launch a fresh wave of attacks. They damn well know MR is supported by the masses (these last 4 years and beyond) and what his campaign pledges are and why he was given such a mandate.

Unsurprisingly they are projecting a false image thus when MR does fulfil his real campaign pledges (which obviously goes against their bs) they will attack him “for failing to meet his campaign pledges and the mandate given from the people blah blah blah” when they have no damn right to use such a scenario if real to “punish” Sri Lanka anyway, however as we know they tramples on our rights and will use any excuse to attack Sri Lanka and MR.

The Government cannot be openly hostile to the US (can always tell EU countries to stuff it but not the US) but it should be deeply weary and mistrustful of any signs or hands of “friendship” emanating from the US –must always look for the hidden agenda and manipulations. That is the only way to ensure our safety, human rights and sovereignty as well as interests of OUR nation and people coming first and being fulfilled when dealing with the US. (Individuals and media of course can be as hostile as they want, unfortunately our media is retarded and mentally enslaved to suddha so fat chance of them helping. They should function as attack dogs defending the country against foreigners instead of parroting out the Wests view of all and sundry and helping foreigners subvert the nation).

One thing to note is that many Tamils feel defeated. This is good because it will keep them under check as they know the consequences of raising a hand let alone a weapon at us. It also helps in getting them to work with the nation with the obvious consequences staring them in the face if they do not. The only anomaly in this is the Tamil die-ass-pora. They are the ones who give strength the Tamils in SL to fight. This must be stopped. A) Prevent entry of these tossers into Sri Lanka in every and any way possible. I do not understand why the Government still tries to deal with them, i.e. asking for investment or even assistance with IDP (we all know how that went).
B)As Moshe said we need a Mossad type organisation to eliminate the die-ass-pora leadership. The whole lot. No KP style “bringing to SL”, we need to silence the die-ass-pora and that is to take out their leadership. It is the only way to stop them acting as a conduit of interference to SL as well as giving ideas to Tamilia within the country to re-start. TNA monkeys would not be so “tough” if they did not have the die-ass-pora (therefore the West) watching out for them. This can be done using local criminal gangs in whatever countries the die-ass-pora exists in, white plane abductions etc etc. Such operations cannot be traced to SL, we should neither deny or acknowledge their existence, if things do get tough need to call them “rouge operations/agents at work”. (As the CIA/MI6 do when their operatives get caught they simply deny all knowledge and ditch the agents –it’s the risk they take, we must do the same).

Only leaves out Toilet Nadu, but in all honesty they are just crazy jokers. Who can be controlled through Delhi using China card.

Also, aren't there more Tamils in the total Tamil Diaspora from Tamil Nadu rather than from Sri Lanka?

Or, do your numbers include Diaspora Tamils from both countries?

Moshe,

I am really concerned with this sudden flutter of applause coming from the US.

This might make the idiots in Government lower their guard and think (once again) the West is "welcoming MR" and "now understands the ground reality". They have understood the ground reality pretty clearly since day one and have done their damn best to manipulate it to suit them, from sponsoring, supporting and funding the LTTE to engineering humanitarian catastrophes, green lighting election violence and a Military Dictatorship (Gonseka). to trying to put sanctions on Sri Lanka with bogus "war crimes" allegations along with spitting thoroughly on the nations image and standing. We cannot forget any of this. My fear is MR will once again go with open arms, lower his guard and get stabbed as happened since May 2009 and his “lets be friends and move on” statements to the West. Worst they might try literally stabbing him (as per Economic Hit Man rules).

They cannot fall into this trap that is being laid right as we speak, the effects of which we will feel later down the line.

According to some the West is planning to use the “war crimes” bs as a tool of ransom against the country (as they have failed with the aid weapon) to black mail MR. Only way to counter this is to fire back the accusation right at them (i.e. it was the West that told Tamilia to create human shield to engineer a humanitarian catastrophe plus the Gonseka initiative –funding election violence AND military take over etc etc).

Patriots,

I would like to see Sri Lanka placing TWO 1,000 MW nuclear power plants online in TEN YEARS time by 2020.

All nations of the world, having uninhibited access to nuclear technology, are moving rapidly to free themselves of dependence on fossil energy for energy security as well as climate change reasons.

I DO AGREE with the URGENCY George Will expresses in the article below, about the failure of the US to make Nuclear Power its major energy source, but .. at least in Sri Lanka's case .. I DO NOT AGREE with him on the need to increase the exploitation of clean indigenous alternative energies.

As a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the best route to nuclear power for Sri Lanka is to BUY THE REACTOR & POWER GENERATION EQUIPMENT from a major foreign supplier (e.g., US, Russia, or China), and to arrange the delivery of reactor fuel, and the return of the spent fuel, under appropriate safeguards with the supplier.

Sri Lanka should not contemplate processing fuel because of its very high environmental impact; a burden that we cannot afford given our limited land. Furthermore, if we operate under the NPT/IAEA safeguards, against nuclear proliferation, nuclear power generation can be started in Sri Lanka without delay. An essential requirement for achieving that is to demonstrate that Sri Lanka has achieved rock-steady stability in government, and long term national security.

The reason why we should not rely totally on nuclear power is that, under the above scenario, the nuclear fuel is imported .. and therefore subject to unaffordable price increases beyond our control, and with-holding by the supplier nations should Sri Lanka fall from their grace. Clearly, diversity in fuel supplier relationships is a MUST, for this reason.

Since the supply of nuclear reactor fuel is not within Sri Lanka's control as an indigenous product, nuclear power should not comprise more than, say, 25% of Sri Lanka's installed electricity generating capacity.

To meet major portion of the balance of Sri Lanka's energy needs, we should exploit Solar, Wind, Ocean Wave and Biofuel alternatives massively, say for an additional 65% of our needs.

The balance of energy should be coal for power generation and oil imported to meet the non-electric vehicle demand in transportation.

Hopefully, as clean energy generation increases in Sri Lanka, the fossil fuel generation component of the transportation energy consumption can be rapidly reduced.

This Nuclear Option Is Nuclear: The costs of fads and superstition.

George F. Will
Newsweek
April 9, 2010

The 29 people killed last week in the West Virginia coal-mine explosion will soon be as forgotten by the nation as are the 362 miners who were killed in a 1907 explosion in that state, the worst mining disaster in American history. The costs of producing the coal that generates approximately half of America's electricity also include the hundreds of other miners who have suffered violent death in that dangerous profession, not to mention those who have suffered debilitating illnesses and premature death from ailments acquired toiling underground.

Which makes particularly pertinent the fact that the number of Americans killed by accidents in 55 years of generating electricity by nuclear power is: 0. That is the same number of Navy submariners and surface sailors injured during six decades of living in very close proximity to reactors.

America's 250-year supply of coal will be an important source of energy. But even people not much worried about the supposed climate damage done by carbon emissions should see the wisdom—cheaper electricity, less dependence on foreign sources of energy—of Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander's campaign to commit the country to building 100 more nuclear power plants in 20 years.

Ananda-USA said...

This Nuclear Option Is Nuclear: The costs of fads and superstition.

......continued......
Today, 20 percent of America's electricity, and 69 percent of its carbon-free generation of electricity, is from nuclear plants. But it has been 30 years since America began construction on a new nuclear reactor.

France gets 80 percent of its electricity from nuclear power; China is starting construction of a new reactor every three months. Meanwhile, America, which pioneered nuclear power, is squandering money on wind power, which provides 1.3 percent of the nation's electricity: it is slurping up $30 billion of tax breaks and other subsidies amounting to $18.82 per megawatt-hour, 25 times as much per megawatt-hour as the combined subsidies for all other forms of electricity production.

Wind power involves gargantuan "energy sprawl." To produce 20 percent of America's power by wind, which the Obama administration dreamily proposes, would require 186,000 tall turbines—40 stories tall, their flashing lights can be seen for 20 miles—covering an area the size of West Virginia. The amount of electricity that would be produced by wind turbines extending the entire 2,178 miles of the Appalachian Trail can be produced by four reactors occupying four square miles of land. And birds beware: the American Bird Conservancy estimates that the existing 25,000 turbines kill between 75,000 and 275,000 birds a year. Imagine the toll that 186,000 turbines would take.

Solar power? It produces less than a tenth of a percent of our electricity. And panels and mirrors mean more sprawl. Biomass? It is not so green when you factor in trucks to haul the stuff to the plants that burn it. Meanwhile, demand for electricity soars. Five percent of America's electricity powers gadgets no one had 30 years ago—computers.

America's nuclear industry was a casualty of the 1979 meltdown of the Three Mile Island reactor in Pennsylvania, which was and is referred to as a "catastrophe" even though there were no measurable health effects. Chernobyl was a disaster because Russians built the reactor in a way no one builds today—without a containment vessel.

Since the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority, Alexander's state has played a special role in U.S. energy policy. The last commercial reactor opened in America is Watts Bar, Unit 1 in Tennessee. And, in a sense, all uses of nuclear power began in that state.

In September 1942, the federal government purchased 59,000 acres of wilderness in eastern Tennessee and built an instant city—streets, housing, schools, shops, and the world's most sophisticated scientific facilities. This was—is—Oak Ridge. Just 34 months later, a blinding flash illuminating the New Mexico desert announced the dawn of the atomic age. That is what Americans can do when motivated.

Today, a mini–Manhattan Project could find ways to recycle used nuclear fuel in a way that reduces its mass 97 percent and radioactive lifetime 98 percent. Today, Alexander says, 10 percent of America's lightbulbs are lit with electricity generated by nuclear material recycled from old Soviet weapons stocks. This is, as Alexander says, "one of the greatest swords-into-plowshares efforts in world history, although few people seem to know about it." It is a travesty that the nation that first harnessed nuclear energy has neglected it so long because of fads about supposed "green energy" and superstitions about nuclear power's dangers.

[Oh 'cmon Ananda, don't digress into Moshe's economics please]

Pardon me, but I don't understand why not. Please clarify.

Ananda-USA said...

Oh, BTW,

We probably will not be able to afford Nuclear Reactors bought from the US.

The best bet might be to buy from China, or even India, at about $1 to $1.5 billion/1000MW with attractive financing. All of the construction, especially of the containment vessels, can be done by Sri Lankans with foreign supervision. A plant life of about 50 years is normal.

We might be able to swap fissile ores mined, but not processed, in Sri Lanka for part of these costs. Mining uranium and thorium bearing ores can cause natural reconcentration of fissile materials. This can be reduced, if even the basic processing of the ore is not performed in Sri Lanka albeit with reduced financial benefit.

A Build, Operate and Transfer agreement with the vendor might be one way to afford such high cost plants, but decommissioning, removal of contaminated waste must be built into the agreement with the vendor, together with the supply of fuel, and the reprocessing of the spent fuel.

Nuclear power can be much cheaper than reliance on imported fossil fuels in the long term, but everything will depend on financing terms, operational and management efficiency, and projected energy prices in the long term.

india signed an agreement to build a nuclear powerplant in tamil madu with soviet union in 1988.

the place is called kudankulam.

it is the southern tip of india. equal to our dondra point.

now you don't sign nuclear deals like fcuking an indian uni gal you accidentely met and befriended.

you need planning.

so at least india was planning this from 1987.

was it ANOTHER reason for india to send the IPKF to SL????

work didn't commence in the plant until 2004 bcos russia was going through tough times.

bloody indian MFs are cunning. there is a remote possibility of an explosion. since it is a russian reactor, i'm sure safety features are not as stringent as a US reactor.

IF that happens, depending on the wind, india will be less or more affecetd. but SL will be affected.

if it is during may - september when the south-west monsoon is active most parts of SL would be safe. jaffna peninsula, poonaryn will be in shitt.

if during the north-east monsoon, SL will be safer.

but SL will never be totally safe.

also note how indian nuclear reactors are scattered. they DELIBERATELY avoid the HINDI BELT!!!

is it a fluke????

i don't think so.

Moshe,

I think India is locating many of its sensitive assets in its Southern States partly because of security assessments.

India views its Southern States 1. as more distant from its powerful potential enemies, and 2. as more stable and largely free of terrorism.

Recall that the belt of Indian States from Maharashtra in the South West to Assam & Nagaland in the North East are in turmoil from Maoist terrorism, while its North Western states are subject to Moslem Kashmiri, and possibly Sikh Khalistani, terrorism.

Their security assumptions regarding safety in the Southern States may have to be radically revised if the Tamil Diaspora focus their attention on liberating Tamil Nadu, and more generally the "Dravidian Homeland", from the clutches of the non-Dravidian Northerners!

>Former Tamil legislator denied entry to India

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 14, Colombo: Former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) legislator M.K Sivajilingam was reportedly denied entry into India yesterday (13).

Another former TNA parliamentarian, N. Sri Kanatha had told Daily Mirror that Sivajilingam was denied entry to India at the Chennai airport and was due to return to Sri Lanka late last night.

Indian authorities last December also denied visa to Sivajilingam, who defected from the TNA and contested as an independent candidate at the January Presidential elections when he has come to Chennai from London via Dubai.

The Indian immigration officials have detained him at the airport and sent him back without allowing him to enter the country.

During the height of the war, Sivajilingam was in Chennai after taking leave of absence from the Sri Lanka parliament in October 2008. In December 2008, Indian government ordered Sivajilingam to voluntarily leave India or face deportation due to his controversial political conduct at the time.

Sri Lanka Tamil party ready for discussions with the government

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka's major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has said that it is not opposed to supporting an acceptable proposal on finding a lasting solution to the ethnic issue.

TNA MP-elect from the Jaffna District, Suresh Premachandran has told the BBC Tamil Service that the party was open for discussion with the government.

Premachandran has said there is some truth in recent media reports that the governing UPFA which is few seats shy of a two-thirds majority in parliament at the recent general elections may seek their support to consolidate such a majority.

According to him, the TNA does not have any idea at present as to what types of constitutional amendments were likely to be brought forward.

He has however added that if President Mahinda Rajapaksa comes forward with constitutional reforms aimed at finding solutions to the ethnic problems the TNA would definitely discuss such proposals with him.

"If those changes are made with a view to finding a lasting political solution to the ethnic issue, then the TNA will consider it in a positive way," he has told BBC.

The TNA has already made public its view on what steps should be taken regarding the issue in its election manifesto.

The TNA parliamentarian-elect has told the BBC that whether the President is willing to discuss the issues based on them, or whether he brings in different proposals, the party was prepared to discuss such proposals.

Premachandran has added that the Tamils have rejected the call for a 'unitary state' and have voted for a 'united Sri Lanka' and hence the TNA was prepared to speak to the government within a 'united Sri Lanka' framework.

Listen Pundey...this was never about preventing Gonseka entering the Parliament, but it was all about:

1) Preventing Gonseka from being the CEO of our nation [as, after the war, just to come to power, he got into bed with Thamileelam-separatists and Pro-separatist gooks/kooks/ponnayas and ultimately was going to give the LTTE whores (like you, your mother, your father) your "thamileelam" one way or another!)]

All elected members of parliament such as Mervin Silva and TNA tigers are ranked higher than government officials such as ministry secretaries, therefore now Gen. Fonseka is higher in rank than Gotabaya.

All this time Gen Fonseka had to call Gotabaya "sir" a much junior and less efficient officer. Now Gotabaya will have to call Gen. Fonseka "Sir" in the same way Gotabhaya says "Sir" to Merin Silva and all TNA tiger MPs.

Justice has been served at the end. And thats THE END. How is thaleivar doing?

we have a situation in the middle east.

iran's friend syria is supplying hezbulla in lebanon with SCUD missiles.

remember SCUD missiles??? the missile that is like a penis that gets erect b4 firing???

modern SCUDs are more devastating than saddam hussein's ones.

they plan to achieve multiple objectives.

1. if true hezballah will fire these into israeli NUCLEAR FACILITIES. this is their plan.

israel has the FOURTH largest nuke arsenal. now it is public. by attacking these, hezballa terrorists try to achieve the results of a nuke bomb. rather a dirty bomb which is almost same.

the shitt part of it is, they can get a nuke explossion result by ONLY using CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS!!

exploding nukes are israel's OWN nukes.

israel's IRON DORM is not capable of stopping some advanced missiles hezballa is now thought to have.

there is another side to it.

2. that is to expose israel's nuclear facilities to the world with a BANG!!!

3. and to show its "duplicity" to the iranian nuke issue.

this is a very dangerous development. expect israel to respond with an UNREASONABLY HIGH barrage on lebanon IF war breaks out again as in 2006.

4. it all comes when obaman is trying to reduce nukes around the world. and israel has said NO even before the summit!!

bastards timed these developments well.

5. IF israeli nukes get blown off, that exposes the rest of the country to a possible iranian attack too.

6. also this will neutralize israel's threat to iran which is friendly with syria.

7. in 2006 some ppl asked why israel whacked the shitt out of lebanon SO HARD for hezballa's relatively less effective crap. the reason is this. if any of those crap rockets, katyushas hit our nukes, we will turn to dust with our own nukes.

8. from the sky it is impossible to say what are hezballa SCUDs and what are lebanon's own SCUDs. so the safest thing is to take all of them out.

If we had a good media we could milk such a situation to our advantage -heck if we had one now we could do such immediately.

"Sri Lanka has called on Israel to withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territory saying sustainable peace could only be obtained if Israel were to withdraw from the territories back to the 1967 borders and end the blockade, illegal expansion of settlements and the construction of the separation wall.

Sri Lanka's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York Bandula Jayasekara, speaking at the UN Security Council said his country believed that a resolution of the Palestinian conflict was crucial in restoring peace in the Middle East, and had therefore called on all sides to fully implement resolutions regarding both the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and the two-State solution."

diyasena,

"1. Israel possess US patriiot batteries..Can't they keep the SCUD's out?"

patriots and many other anti-missile systems make up the iron dorm. but it is not possible to stop ALL missiles.

in 2006 hezballa fired WW2 katyusha rockets. some hit israel. so SCUDs can cause real damage.

in 1991 the SCUD vs patriot battle was won by the SCUD!!!

both have improved capabilities.

"2. Surely all of Israel's war heads are not in one place..Such an attack on Israel's will mean possible nuclear retaliation against Iran..And without the S-300s from Russia to protect them, will Iran try such a stunt?"

israel is a ery small country. roughly 1/3rd of SL.

if a terrorist missle hits a nuke facility, that can potentially destroy a large chunk of israel. thereafter there will not be the WILL TO FIGHT.

if damage is bearable, iran, syria and lebanon will be pulverized.

russia has made contradictory statements about C-300s. on odd days it says they will not give it. on even days they say they will.

anyway the russians have got the money for it and will not default on it. best to assume the worst.

iran/syria will not do BS now. they will wait till they are ready.

also IF israel is in a state of ruin and still fights, MOST islamic countries in the world will join in the war. they keep out now for fear of losing.

there is competition between saudi arabia and iran to expand islam over the land of israel.

so everything depends on ISR staying on top of things. there is no room for bickering/weakness.

the recent warning (much like a tsunami warning!!!) ISR made over SENAI was a false alarm. but it can happen.

also there are tunnels to palestinian territories from outside. they transport humans, animals, fuel, food, weapons and what-not. in case of war, syria will use these disgruntled ppl create trouble.

Moshe Dyan said...

hezballa - syria - iran are shiite muslim and palestinians are mostly sunni arabs.

but they iron out their differences when it comes to attacking israel.

in 2007 we bombed a syrian nuke reactor. this made less work for the UN!!!! nothing to inspeact there. if we had not, we will be worried now over a POSSIBLE syrian nuke strike (although it takes 5-10 years to make a nuke bomb since aquiring technology).

national security cannot rest on chance, hearts & minds.

The thing is can Israel bomb Iran?
Israel can never use Nukes. If they do, that would be end of Israel. Are they powerful enough to hit Iran? Is Iran big enough to stop an Israeli air Invasion? Or using long range missile without themselves getting bombed. I don't believe Israel can Attack Iran any other means.

Moshe & Others,

It is IMPOSSIBLE to set off a nuclear warhead tipped missile by firing a conventional missile at it.

You can destroy the nuclear missile, and you can disperse its materials, but you cannot cause a nuclear explosion, because to explode it you have to concentrate the fissile materials to a very high density, pressure and temperature to attain a fast criticality.

In intentional triggering of a warhead, that is achieved by very careful design and precise manufacture to achieve a imploding configuration; this is very difficult to do. The slightest asymmetric departure from that imploding pattern, and the high density, pressures and temperatures required to achieve criticality are not attained, and only dispersal of those materials takes place without a nuclear explosion.

This is true even in the case of a nuclear power reactor going critical uncontrollably either because of a malfunction, or an enemy attack upon it. Nuclear criticality as in a nuclear weapon is not attained because the material is dispersed before it attains criticality.

In a nuclear reactor, on the other hand, thermal runaway of the reactor core can result in a conventional explosion because of the high vapor pressures created in the boiling coolant, melting the core, destroying the containment vessel, and releasing fission products in the spent fuel to the atmosphere.

But again, I emphasize, while the release of fission products due to this conventional explosion poses a health hazard, NO NUCLEAR EXPLOSION, with its much larger blast and radiation effects, and enhanced radioactive fission product fallout, will take ever place!

The world accept that the West bank and Gaza are part of the Palestinian country and do not fall within the boundaries of Israel hence why the Israeli presence is called occupation and is deemed illegal along with settlements being built in these areas also deemed illegal.

Furthermore the whole world accepts a two state solution. SL has not really done anything “wrong” but adopted a world populist viewpoint over Israel, which even Israel also agrees on (two states) just the manner in which that happens and the boundaries of it are disagreed.

SL is a completely different case to Israel/Palestine as it is/can be similar too.

Re: Blake speech.

I saw a clip of Blake speaking over Kyrgystan (and earlier over India during Singhs visit), he really does look and sound like some real slimy SoB. When you see his words in text you think he is some tough, well articulating diplomat who on the face appears friendly not some geekish untrustworthy slime ball. If you look at Bernard Savage or even Butenis they look like people who on the face of it are “alright” and you can talk too (maybe even trust, though that obviously is the worse thing you can do as they are all manipulative liars who we should never trust and whatever comes out of their mouths has multiple meaning which are all against us), however just looking at Blake, his facial features and voice how the hell can anyone trust him? He just oozes “I am a dirty SoB and CIA agent with a giant ego to boot”. Only our idiots would be taken in by him. Cannot believe MR invited him to his house for some morning breakfast in Hambantota at sunrise or some shit like that.

By the time our fools realised what snake dealing with it was too late I guess and well to their credit they bitch slapped him good clearly he now has a major bruised ego.

Anyway we need to have Blake (along with UN officials and Milliband ) indicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity as per creation of the human shield and thus engineering a humanitarian catastrophe on a civilian population to justify intervention to save the LTTE leadership, pro-long war and the continual violation of the human rights and safety of the people in Sri Lanka.

The human shield concept was after all the Wests idea, implemented by the Tamils and the LTTE.

In short in political sense

Palestine = SL = Sinhale

Israel = TE = Tamiz

In short;

Similarity:

There was a country called Palestine in world map in 1800s (hence before that) but not an Isreal. Similarly there was a country called Sinhale/ Ceylon/ Sri Lanka in world map in 1800s (hence before that) but not an Tamiz Ezham.

Difference:

Jews wanted separate country and they got it with the help of USA/west. Tamiz wanted separate country and they couldn't get it even with the help of USA/west. Palestines failed protecting their land and Sinhalese didn't.

However, when it comes to fighting

in military sense

Israel = Sri Lanka
Palestine = LTTE terrorists.

SL stand on this issue is based on natural justice I guess, so do the rest of the world apart from USA/west. However, any country may ignore natural justice and change sides depending on own benefits.

Perhaps we discussed this earlier. Anyway try to see this from our eyes (sinhala/others) instead of in Jews eyes you see a different view.

Deported Sri Lankan politician to lodge complaint with the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 15, Colombo: Presidential candidate at the Presidential election in January and former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) legislator M.K. Sivajilingam is considering lodging a complaint with the Indian High Commission in Colombo over his deportation back to Sri Lanka from Chennai, India.

Sivajilingam, who was deported on Tuesday, is lodging a protest with the Indian High Commission in Colombo, media reports said.

Indian authorities last December also denied visa to Sivajilingam when he came to Chennai from London via Dubai.

Sivajilingam has been reported in the media as saying that he still has a diplomatic passport issued for legislators, which is valid till the newly elected parliamentarians are officially gazetted by the Election Commission.

According to Sivajilingam, he has obtained SAARC Travel endorsement in his passport from the Sri Lanka Immigration which is valid till November 10, 2010.

Upon his arrival in Chennai, India, immigration authorities had informed Sivajilingam that they had had received a Home Ministry notification that he is persona non grata and will be deported back to Colombo.

In December 2008, Indian government ordered Sivajilingam to voluntarily leave India or face deportation due to his controversial political conduct at the time.

All the terrorist is disguise of terrorist right supporters must realize that Sri Lanka is not their place. Chidambaram says open to talks with Maoists

ExpressBuzz.com
April 15, 2010

NEW DELHI: The opposition Thursday tore into a "divided" United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over its handling of the Maoist menace, and Home Minister P. Chidambaram, answering the criticism, reiterated his dialogue offer to the rebels.

He also said state governments have the primary responsibility of combating Leftist insurgency.

Chidambaram's remarks followed a heated debate in the two houses of parliament on Leftwing extremism and the government's policies to fight the guerrillas - and came two weeks after Maoists massacred 76 security personnel in Chhattisgarh April 6. The debate took place on the first day of parliament's resumed budget session after a month-long recess.

The home minister said as far the Congress was concerned, "our policy is very clear" and referred to a party resolution that "urges the government to give the highest priority to curb Naxalism but underlines the social economic policies as well".

"It doesn't close the possibility of the dialogue, the doors of dialogue are always open," he said.

Chidambaram said paramilitary forces have been sent to the affected states to help the state governments in anti-insurgency operations and "regain control of areas dominated by Naxalites (Maoists), restore the civil administration and re-start development work".

"The state governments, therefore, have the primary responsibility," he said, reading the same statement he tabled in the Rajya Sabha.

He said the Dantewada attack should make us "more determined" to fight Maoists and "more compassionate" for the development of poor.

The home minister stressed that anti-Maoist operations were being carried out with the policy agreed by chief ministers of the affected states.

"We should stay calm, hold our nerve and stay the course," he said.

The home minister said the government has ordered a full-fledged probe into the massacre. "The preliminary investigation has confirmed my first reaction that something went wrong," he said, refusing to divulge details and promised to "come back to the house and share the conclusion" of the probe report to be submitted by April 24-25.

Chidambaram said the government had offered talks with the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maosit) and hoped there would be a sincere response to "the only condition - that the CPI-Maoist must abjure violence".

Ananda-USA said...

Chidambaram says open to talks with Maoists
.......continued........
The issue earlier rocked the Lok Sabha with repeated adjournments amid unpleasant scenes. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Congress accused each other of using Maoist guerrillas for electoral gains.

BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, a former finance minister, initiated the debate in the lower house and assured the government of the party's full support in its war against the extremists.

But he went on to lambast the government on its tackling of the Maoist problem, which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described as the "greatest threat" to India's internal security.

Sinha said the Congress used Maoists for political gains in some states and sent a "wrong signal" that the government was "ready to compromise on terrorism".

"You forged an alliance with Naxalites in Andhra Pradesh for electoral benefits," he accused.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal reacted sharply and said the BJP leader had forgotten the relationship his party has with Maoists in Chhattisgarh. "He (Sinha) doesn't know what relationship his party has with Maoists. He has forgotten that."

Speaker Meira Kumar objected to the hurling of allegations during a discussion on "a tragedy which has saddened all of us".

"This is not the debate where allegations should be leveled. All parties should put their heads together and see how we can eliminate such incidents."

At least 30 MPs, including Lalu Prasad, Sharad Yadav, Basudeb Acharia, Mulayam Singh Yadav, spoke in the nearly seven-hour debate in the Lok Sabha.

In the Rajya Sabha, BJP leader Arun Jaitley said: "This battle the country cannot lose. This battle (needs) to go on."

Maoism, he added, needed "to be eradicated".

Terming the Maoist threat as alarming, the BJP leader said the entire opposition was backing the government in its campaign against the Maoists. "The country wants to speak in one language... but we do not need a divided government."

Quoting Chidambaram, he said the home minister spoke about a "strong head, strong heart and enormous staying power" to fight the guerrillas.

"We agree with you. But what we don't need is a divided government. We don't want half a Maoist in the treasury benches," he said, referring to criticism by some Congress leaders of the home minister's tackling of the Maoist problem.

now that is a very dangerous situ.

no. there is no mismatch. what matches politically MUST match militarily as well. otherwise the mismatch creates instability.

re: palestinians

guys, this is the SAME THING about tamil elamists if you look at it neutrally.

why do you feel arab racism, 2 countries is the solution to "suffering" palestinians (only) at the hands of "genocidal" israelis???

bcos tamil elam like propoganda work of arabs has worked well!!!

israel OTOH does not promote itself so much. in fact some acts discredit israel but are essential.

e.g. dubai terrorist elimination

similarly some countries in the world thinks sinhalas genociding tamils.

we know the difference bcos we have LIVED in SL.

similarly b4 critisising israel, GO THERE. see for yourselves how palestinians live in israel with EQUAL INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS.

these 2 ppls can live together. there is no need for 2 countries. if they live together (which MOST of 25% arab israelis are doing very well. no riots. no genocide.) there is no need to build a wall. no need to fire rockets.

it is an unfortunate state of affairs in israel than in paelstine. it is the division that has caused all this BS.

jews and palestinians lived for 3,000+ years peacefully until invadeders divided tham and ruled. we CAN live peacefully once again IF these outside MFs keep their dirty hands off us.

why????

bcos of INTENSE colonization and resultant ethnic integration in ampara over the years.

it was no accident.

same thing goes for colombo.

tamils are about 25% of colombo voters today.

that would mean = 20*25% = 5 seats.

but only 1 seat for a tamil.

other tamils voted for sinhalas and muslims.

why????

ethnic integration.

[but the "eruption" a "dirty bomb" creates in a small country like israel will be ENORMOUS.]

True. A conventional bomb with a fission product blanket, designed to cause extensive atmosperic pollution, is a "dirty" conventional bomb.

Such a bomb can cause an extensive health hazard in a very small country like Israel, or Sri Lanka, essentialy making the land unliveable for a long time.

I was responding to statements that seemed to imply, incorrectly,

1. that you can set off a true nuclear explosion by targeting a nuclear weapon with a conventional weapon, and

2. that the fission product and/or radiation fallout of such a strike is as large as that of a true nuclear explosion, OR that of a true conventional "dirty" bomb designed to cause an extensive fallout.

BOTH of these situations are NOT POSSIBLE.

Hundreds of SLA soldiers are engaged in constructing a big base in front of Paali Nakar Maththiya Viththiyaalayam (when they get FREE education from govt that is good. then welcome the SLA as well) in Mallaavi with several layers of security precautions enclosing the streets in the area.

LTTE pensioner gets election go-ahead in UK

A pensioner in the UK has been given the go-ahead to run candidates in the upcoming elections despite his links to the LTTE.

Nadarajah Balasubramaniam, 69, hopes to persuade people the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are freedom fighters, despite years of suicide bombing and reports they used child soldiers to fight the Sri Lankan army.

The Electoral Commission has reinstated his People’s Front of Liberation Tigers party to its register, having removing it pending investigation on March 19.

Mr Subramaniam, who lives in Thornton Heath, said he set up the party’s head office in Lomard Business Park,Purley Wayto make use of its 24-hour security.

The former post office worker received dozens of calls from friends and family to check he had not been arrested following the Croydon Guardian’s exclusive interview earlier this month.

He said : “During the last few days I had to do lot of talking in order to pacify my friends and relations that I am well, ‘alive and kicking’.

“Some Tamil radio has given news to say that I was already in the prison. It was April Fool’s day too.”

A spokeswoman for the Electoral Commission and another for the Home Office both said enforcement of terror laws was the job of the police.

Croydon police would not say whether any action would be taken against Mr Balasubramaniam.

Rudd says Sri Lanka peaceful

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says parts of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are now more peaceful than they used to be and that would be taken into consideration when considering asylum applications.

He said more and more applications were likely to be rejected as the security situation continued to improve.

Responding to caller Sarah from Sydney, who said she was a Tamil who had fled Sri Lanka because of systematic persecution, Mr Rudd said the overall policy hadn't changed and those asylum seekers not found to be genuine were sent home.

Those found to be in genuine fear of persecution, then Australia would provide a safe haven, he said.

"But what's happened... is that we have now changing security circumstances in large parts of Sri Lanka. They have recently had democratic elections there," he told the Seven Network on Friday morning.

"Outside of the Jaffna Peninsular, the very top of the country, the rest of the country is going OK."

Mr Rudd said Australia was basing changing processing arrangements for asylum seekers on reporting from that country.

"Large parts of it are more secure. Some parts are not. Therefore, it depends where the people come from. The same with Afghanistan."

He said parts of Afghanistan were now more stable than before.

"Therefore, you have got to make a decision which fairly reflects where people come from, not just from the country but from the parts of the country," he said.

Mr Rudd said the government had suspended processing of asylum applications from people from Sri Lanka as the security situation unfolded.

"If it continues to improve, we will find more and more of those applications rejected and more sent back home," he said

Yeah, right!

The Rajapaksas are just following in the footsteps of the Roosevelts in the US (Teddy, Franklin, etc), the Kennedys in the US (John, Robert, Teddy etc), the Bushes of the US (George the father, George the son, and Jeb etc), the Gandhis in India (Nehru, Indira, Rajiv, Sonia, Priyanka, Rahul), the Karunanidhi clan in Tamil Nadu (old Karuna, Kanimozhi, his son etc), the Senanayakes in Sri Lanka (Don Stephen, Dudley, Rukman ), the Bandaranaikes in Sri Lanka(SWRD, Sirimavo, Chandrika, Anura ...) etc with a global distribution of families in politics.

The only difference is that political families in other countries are viewed as gifted people rising to political prominence aided by the family reputation for public service, but if it is the war-winning patriotic Rajapaksa family of Sri Lanka that in four short years eradicated terrorism, and developed the country to a level not seen since the days of Parakramabhahu the Great, and has EARNED the love, admiration and support of the vast majority of the people of Sri Lanka, it is mere NEPOTISM by a TOTALLY UNDESERVING and INEPT CLAN.

Let us be a wee bit fair, and give the Rajapaksa's the credit they have EARNED, shall we?

Moshe and others;

Re: SL/Elam vs Israel/P'thene

No two countries in teh world are the same take that before we begin. So there are similarities and differences.

- Israel has been teh country that had been there. Constant arab invasion made a lot of them migrate [since the land wasn't enough] but for all the known time there had been some Jewish settlement in the meditaranean coast.

- Jews and Sinhala face same problem. Both are smaller populations battered by population volcanoes in mainland/innerland.

- If SL was land connected to India Sinhala and SL will be teh same as Israel. SL will loose its existance and a greater Sinhala minority will live in the southern tip of the island controlled by tamils. Jews were not taht lucky.

- Another thing is Jews had Europe to go, but Sinhala has no landmass to go below SL.

- So that is why we have a diff of things. If not what happened in SL around 1000CE is almost teh same in Judea from even before. We had a Kitthi Wijebahu to chase them, and palk straight to guard us. We're lucky.

- But Israel are white boot lickers. They did it in teh same fashion that tamils did it.

- West found two projects Israel/Jew and Elam/Tamil as good plans to penetrate the regions. Arabs and Sinhala stand firm with uniqueness and pride and that is why they're not liked.

- I cannot agree with Israel's war and mechanism of war. It cares very little for lives, even small children. Militarily SLDF and IDF are different. Have you ever seen a single IDF soldier carrying an arabic child for safety? Or old arabic grandma? Nop. They take every civilan as a terrorist.

- Israel occupies lands captured in 6 day war. That is like SL invading parts of Tamilnadu after preemptively attacking India in 1987 and keeping teh lands on teh basis taht they support pussycats.

- I think teh peace will come [temporarily] if Israel learns to respect the rights of Arabs to live and come to agreement of coexistence. It is not possible forever to keep might. God Father of Israel [USA] is loosing power, and becoming more and more liberal. It will be another decade taht it will hold the position of no 1 power. What comes after that? Can Israel fight this war alone? ?It is time for them to be sensible.

- Israel shud learn from west. F**kers invaded our lands, killed our pl, raped our women, cut our non-baptised kids to two, and suddenly started preaching. Today they are preaching us HUMAN RIGHTS. Israel shud soon preach about INTEGRATION, Reconciliation, Coexistence etc. They still have the power so what?

- If they come to the benevolent grounds the extremists of Palastene will gradually get isolated. Then they can do what SL did to pussycats.

- Another diff of pussycats and palasthene movements is teh public support among their own ppl. Most tamils show a token support to pussycats, but most arabs will to give life for their movements. It is craeted by ISR USA playing bully.

- It just tells us a infinite truth about both nations. Whatever we achieved in teh long run teh chances of survival of both Sinhala race and Jew race is very low. The severe flux of ppl will definitely take control over teh lands. Both Jews and Sinhala have only teh ocean to jump in.

when dalali lama met one jewish prof, he asked how the tiny ethnic group survived so many events.

3. even lord buddha seems to have chosen SL. as GOD chose israel and jews.

4. SLs wishes to be reborn in SL over and over again. jews aspire to go to israel from wherever they are. they left RICHER countries and came to israel.

we have too many things in common a only a few things are different.

we shall not jump to the sea.

Re: Occupation or otherwise

I have to disagree.

The regions as stated by Torah, were populated and parts of other countries. It is true that they are places once dwelled by Jews, but today they are parts of other countries. I cannot accept taht it si right to attack them and capture by force, and make its populations total beggars. SL never did something like this.

I agree with you, if those regions were controlled by jews at least for the most part of history. My knowledge is taht at least for last 1500 years they belonged to other nations and was fully void of Jewish presence. You can correct me if wrong.

In similar note your argument is similar to claiming some parts of Pakistan, Afganistan, Russia and Russian republics to Indian state. Since they were once a part of greater Indian kingdoms.

It is sad how the arabic invasions destroyed Judea. And I see that when you're a part of the mainland it happens often. Mainland is so vague and minor asia is a hell of a power tussle.

SL was luckily saved and marked by ocean.

Re: Jeruselam

Incidentally it is the core center for all three abrahmic religions. It is so hard to say who shud own it.

Moshe I am very much secular but I understand its significance.

Re: Long run

Moshe if you take twelve of theirs to one of yours still yours run out. So the war is not gonna save them. They will be saved until USA plays the controller role and holds world power balance. Also as long as Sauds rule Saudi Arabia. But these durations are so tiny in human calander.

Safety of Sinhala will be held until teh current world order of UN and security granted with it lasts. Also until teh federation of India lasts. Imagine TN getting independant. Imagine the UN loose its role. These things will not last for ever.

Thru-out history it was proven that as long as millenia is considered only the big bulks of ppl have won. And I see that it applies to both Sinhala and Jews.

Meanwhile it is the time for both SL and Jews to try the next options available to keep their control and sustain the success.

Re: For one of ur twelve of yours

No Moshe this has never been the policy in SL. We were not the party who was driven with vengence. We sinply systematically eliminated teh terrorists. We did not attack anyone with tamil ethnicity for being tamil. I do take that there can be damage, interrogation etc but they were all done on teh basis of attacking terras or suspecting as terras.

Our approach is teh best which Israel shud try. They have to win portions of arabs and be part with them and eliminate the enemy with their support. They are staying with teh land of theirs and attacking aerially and with missiles damaging teh hell out of it. Ape ekekta thoge oona gaanak. No mate IDf shud start moving into those enemy lands with the help of arabs. and eliminate the ppl who attack Israel.

First they ought to win hearts of arabs and support too. That way they can eliminate the enemy by isolating them

There is no success for ISR as long as they think of it as Israel vs Arab. It shud bbe Israel vs Terras, or Israel's war against terror. The main problem they have in my view is teh attitude of "ape ekekkuta thoge N number". Number suggest that N has to be pretty big to get any success, and likely will be the Mazada option as stated in R10.

Israel is with advantage but teh overall game is losing.

Israel is a landmine. It is tough to figure out what is right or wrong there.

It is incorrect to say the Israelis are boot licker. They are trying to survive in a tough situation.

I don't believe there would ever be a solution to Israel. What ever you give to Arabs would never satisfy them. Once you give part of the country, they will continue to ask for me. The same would applies to SL.

There is a constant supply of hardcore fundamental Arabs waiting to die. Israelis one day would have to either leave that country, or flatten Middle east for its own survival.

Re: Mazada Option

This is the set stage of R10. It is coming from 5yr old memory of mine. So there maybe mistakes.

In the fal of US into chinese economic empire, ISR looses control over rising islamic fundamentalism and arabic invasion. Iran gains nuke power. Iran and other Arabic natios even fly over Israel. Intimidation continues and even ISR is forced to disarm its nuke arsenal.

Yet ISR has most nuke arsenal. And they still stand as war power in the region. After so much of insult and harrasment ISR attacks enemies by bombing Iranian sites. In teh coming of war Arabs combine and there was no majopr support for ISR. Their defeat and slavery under arabs is eminent. So they decides to take "Mazada Option".

They use their full nuke arsenal and in turn receive teh same. In teh total explosion there remains nobody in eth whole of minor asia and arabian peninsula. In the place where Soudi Arabia is now ground sand turns to glass.

Fall out effects the whole planet. Humans have to wrap the entire body with a special fabric when going out. Ppl have to stay is shade [hence the term "Stay in shade" instead of "take care"].

Worst of all. The huge explosion "buckles" the tectonic plate. The buckling effect propagates around teh world with R8+ quakes all over the place, anc culminating with a huge quake that breaks California into two.

That is R10 in a nutshell

When the LTTE was busily blowing up innocent civilians, hanging dissenting Tamils from lamp posts, assassinating political leaders in Sri Lanka and India who opposed them, kidnapping, brainwashing and enslaving underage children by the thousands for use as cannon fodder, turning children against their parents, instituting a nihilistic regime of death by cyanide capsule and suicide bomb, ethnically cleansing vast areas of innocent Sinhala and Muslim villagers by hacking them into pieces in the dead of the night for maximum terror, cold-bloodedly executing captured soldiers and policemen by the thousand after extracting their blood, turning their own people into global refugees and smuggling them abroad to create a captive tax base to fund their terror in Sri Lanka, violating the immigration laws and welfare systems of every host country blackmailed into accepting these fake refugees .... no supporters of the LTTE in the Tamil Diaspora then cried foul and wept for these innocent victims as the LTTE pursued the goal of creating a racist mono-ethnic aparthied separatist Tamil state of Eelam in Sri Lanka. These unworthy souls aided and abetted, stood up and cheered, these MONSTERS who claimed to be the SOLE REPRESENTATIVES of Tamil people in Sri Lanka after killing all dissenters within reach, and expelling the rest to seek refuge by the hundreds of thousands in the South among the much demonized Sinhala people of Sri Lanka.

Given this monstrous human rights record of these so-called "Liberators of the Tamils", it is truly amazing to hear these same Eelamists accusing the Government of Sri Lanka of war crimes and persecution of Tamils at this blog.

The chutzpah of these unrepentant Eelamists is the same as that of the MURDERER who axed both of his parents to death, and then pleaded for a leniency in sentencing from the judge because he was an ORPHAN!

The FOREMOST DUTY of any elected Government is to protect the integrity of nation and the lives of its people .. a duty that successive governments of Sri Lanka failed to fulfill for 30 long years because of a lack of will, determination and courage. It is for that reason that the US armed forces are now fighting a difficult, but essential, war in Afghanistan. It is that duty which compelled President Abraham Lincoln to wage the US Civil war, horrendously costly in blood and treasure, 150 years ago. It is that same DUTY that President Mahinda Rajapaksa served so magnificently in eradicating the LTTE from Sri Lanka, despite seemingly insurmountable barriers erected by global naysayers.

Today, Sri Lanka is FREE OF TERRORISM. Sri Lanka has now resumed its march, that beckoned it at independence in 1948, towards a NEW GOLDEN AGE as ONE NATION, of ONE PEOPLE, sharing ONE COMMON DESTINY as Sri Lankans with EQUAL RIGHTS, and EQUAL RESPONSIBILITY to love, protect, and develop this Resplendent Isle that we call home.

It is about a scientist who lost all his family to EQ and hence wanting to "fuse" the tectonic plates.

It makes the case more needed after the arab-israel war [fictional] the tectonic activity intensifies. So taht is like a prologue. In the middle part of the story the author touches BG topics of Chinese coporatocracy [predicting to be heartless], black independance movements and growing Islamic fundamentalism all over the world and black+islamic seperatist war in US.

It is good but very immature story. The things it packs in ~50yrs span will need at least 500yrs to happen and its quakes are very much underrated. The culmination of R10 quake breaks california to two subducting LA inside and making Baja and coastal Mexico/California an island. Also it has an AI system that has stored "everything taht happened in the planet earth" and can predict all its tectonic future. It is kinda against chaos theory emergence and butterfly effect.

But a good sci-fi.

Sorry all I went too far with R-10. I just wanted to tell taht "one of us for twelve of yours" can only lead Israel for Mazada as Arabs outnumber them 1:500 or so. As long as American shield is there Israel can survive, but, naked and bare, only left is Mazada option [which they can always do considering their war power].

I admire Israel for being so tiny but being so dominant. They need to improve in diplomatic circles and become teh best friend of civilized arab world, with teh their help destroying its enemy hiding within that. In my view that is the only long term solution left for them.

Excerpts of an interview with the Pres about the cabinet.

At times there are some fantastic posts here (for example, very technical in nature, or a view point, or a historical context etc). So this SUGGESTION: it may be a good idea for the posters to keep a record, in case there is opportunity for them to be published and hence preserved.

More "humanitarian" work on display:

"
Dutch priest in sex abuse

Bishop Ad van Luyn of Rotterdam in the Netherlands has reported a Dutch priest to the police for alleged sexual abuse in Sri Lanka. Pending an investigation, the priest has been suspended with immediate effect by the Rotterdam diocese, which contacted the police following questions raised by Radio Netherlands Worldwide and daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

The priest, who until today was pastor in the towns of Leidschendam and Voorburg on the outskirts of The Hague, is a regular visitor to Sri Lanka where, according to the diocese he is "active in the field of charity".

A spokesman for the diocese said it was informed in July 2009 about "possible sexual abuse and possible financial misappropriations by this priest while in Sri Lanka". In an email to RNW, the spokesman stated that at that time the diocese ordered "a preliminary investigation," but that "so far its results proved unable to corroborate the accusations".

Following questions by RNW and NRC Handelsblad, Bishop Van Luyn has taken additional action. The priest is the fifth Roman Catholic clergyman who has been suspended because of an investigation into alleged sexual abuse. The Dutch embassy in Sri Lanka says it knows nothing about the case.

Information in the hands of RNW and NRC Handelsblad shows that the same priest was known to have had sexual relations with boys in the 1990s. At the time he was serving as a pastor in the former St Anthony parish in the city of Dordrecht. In 1995, he was reprimanded by Bishop Ad van Luyn because of his "lifestyle".

However, despite this he was then promoted to the post of Deacon of The Hague, where he remained for a couple of years. The diocese spokesman said that what happened in Dordrecht was "a possible failure to comply with the pledge of celibacy", and not sexual abuse. (Radio Netherlands)"

/this means there is a political/ military mismatch in both israel and SL. now that is a very dangerous situ.
no. there is no mismatch. what matches politically MUST match militarily as well. otherwise the mismatch creates instability./

Well, not necessarily. Anyway I am no expert in this issue so I back off. But only two things I can't understand is 1. if there was a country called Palestine decades ago how come they are countryless now? and 2. If Hitler did Holocaust which means a very large presence of Jews in Europe how come Jews not getting Israel some where within Europe?

If MR really need 2/3 he better have 160+ with him. Having exactly 150 may lead to unwanted demands when he need 150. I Think its good in long term to have crossovers from SLMC and TNA. But if MR have exactly 150 there may be racist demands when MR needs 150. OTOH, if MR gets UNP crossovers and make exactly 150 such demands will probably be about perks which are less relevant in national security.

[Arabs such as Saladin actually tolerated Jews and Christians.]

Correct.

Also, much later in time when the Muslim Moors were expelled from Spain (Edict of Expulsion, March 31, 1492) under the Spanish Reconquest led by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, all Jews (245,000), who had thrived in "Andalusia" under the Moors, were declared persona-non-grata and expelled from Spain.

The ships carrying the Jews were refused entry by every Christian port and nation, but Sultan Bayezid II of Turkey INVITED these Jews to settle in Turkey as Turkish citizens, declaring that he wished to have such talented people among his own citizens and thanking the Spanish king and queen for enriching Turkey. Note that as Sultan, he was also the Caliph, or Head and Protector of the Muslim faith.

About 90,000 of these Jews settled largely in Thessalonika (now in Greece) and in Istanbul (former Greek Constantinople captured by Mehmed II from the Byzantine Greeks in 1453), and in Izmir (former Greek Smyrna). They were given protection under Turkish law, money to rebuild and settle, and a part of the city to develop a Jewish community. Many of these Jews were elevated to high office as valued advisers and administrators in the Ottoman Empire.

The balance of Jews mostly settled in North African Muslim countries, not yet under Ottoman rule. Surprisingly, about 20,000 were able to find refuge in Christian England, Holland and Scandinavian countries.

NO. there is no country called palestine.

"My knowledge is taht at least for last 1500 years they belonged to other nations and was fully void of Jewish presence"

WRONG!

TF, your other assertions about india is also wrong.

"Moshe if you take twelve of theirs to one of yours still yours run out."

NO! it is combatanats. very very few arabs are going to fight. most of them don't want to fight. there are NO COUNTRIES that want to fight with israel. (iran also don't want it though one madman boasts). ONLY TERRORISTS fight israel. we can win the numbers game.

"Thru-out history it was proven that as long as millenia is considered only the big bulks of ppl have won. And I see that it applies to both Sinhala and Jews."

complete BULLSHIT.

compared what jews have gone through during NAZAR, (S)HITLER, etc., present challenges are NOTHING.

surviving the past 4,000+ years was the most difficult. the future is much easier bcos the world together protects ppl of all communities THAN BEFORE.

"Jewish community influence them to support"

of course. SL does that too.

does our men go arselicking russia, pakistan, india, china, USA, etc. to get help/weapons/finance??????

no. it's the same thing.

just bcos israel gets MORE help doesn't mean they arse lick.

if you follow third party facilitated midlle east peace initiatives, you can see who won finally.

diyasena,

"It was not arab invasions which triggered the jewish exodus from the holy land..It was defeat at the hands of the Romans and their after persecution during the crusades..Arabs such as Saladin actually tolerated Jews and Christians."

wrong.

romans did cause an exodus and some arabic rulers ON THE FACE OF IT tolerated jews. but many instances of prosecution and they slowly tried to impose. it was a clever strategy.

the crusade also worked against us, ironically.

but the biggest reason for jews to leave israel was economic reasons.

that is NOT THE POINT here.

the point is the destruction and OCCUPATION of israel and MORE IMPORTANTLY, NOT HANDING IT BACK TO THE PEOPLE.

ninja,

"1. if there was a country called Palestine decades ago how come they are countryless now?"

it was all done by colonial rulers. they demarcated the way they wanted.

there are palestinian territories. and they also live in MOST countries in the region. not only israel even jordan has parts of the OLD palestine.

"2. If Hitler did Holocaust which means a very large presence of Jews in Europe how come Jews not getting Israel some where within Europe?"

israel is the promised land. no where else. god directed prophet moshe to take israelites to israel about 3,500 years ago.

Moshe Dyan said...

ananda,

not quite true. on the outward it was like that. but there were many cases of discrimination/prosecution. they overwhelmed israelites with their sheer numbers.

this is not to say others were any better.

the biggest reason for jews to move out was, continued violence and economic reasons. these violence ruined the economy, ancient cities, etc.

but later day arab invaders were more violent. still are!

Moshe Dyan said...

diyasena,

"But in such a case the arabs will be a majority in Israel."

lol!

this is popularised within israel with confusing ideas. for instance some even refer to it as two state solution whereas there is a seperate two-state solution!!!

it CERTAINLY does not mean an arrangement in the lines you suggest.

the best way to describe my position is - against the PROPOSED two-state solution. there must NOT be a requirement to pullout from present territories yet palestinians (other than those who are in israel at the moment) cannot become israeli citizens.

palestine is ok IF they respect israel and its present boundaries. only very hardcore jewish sectors want ROOM FOR FURTHER EXPANSION.

IMPORTANCE - CRITICAL

interview with GR. from island.lk

"Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says the new SLFP-led UPFA government should be prepared to (1). thwart a fresh attempt by separatists operating abroad to throw a lifeline to the LTTE. A section of the international community, he says, is bent on reviving the LTTE and giving it recognition.

In an exclusive interview with The Island, Defence Secretary Rajapaksa discussed a range of issues, including (2)the need to maintain political stability, (3). strengthening the economy and the responsibility of the new government, which would be installed next week, to (4). sustain a cohesive security policy. He also emphasised the pivotal (5). importance of the judiciary, particularly the Attorney General’s Department, in supporting the government’s efforts to suppress terrorism.

(6). Suppressing the separatist movement and tackling its propaganda apparatus should be a major part of Sri Lanka’s strategy against the LTTE, he said.

A MUST....

(7). The new government should go all out against any local element promoting separatist sentiments regardless of political consequences, he said, emphasising that the country could not afford to make way for terrorists.

The Defence Secretary said that the next parliament should introduce new laws to meet security requirements. Responding to a query by The Island, the former Gajaba veteran said that Opposition political parties or constituent partners of the ruling coalition should not be allowed to engage in divisive politics.

In his first public comments after the April 8 general election, the Defence Secretary said that the LTTE would not have lasted 30 years, had previous governments acted wisely. The destruction of the LTTE’s conventional military capability about a year ago might give a false sense of complacency to the political establishment, he said. Pro LTTE sections of the Tamil Diaspora, he said, were carrying out a high profile campaign against Sri Lanka. The Global Tamil Forum was lobbying overseas to win over foreign politicians. He said that the presence of high profile British politicians and officials at a recent gathering of GTF in the UK had revealed the gravity of the situation.

GR SAYS THE SAME THING....

(8). The Defence and Foreign Ministries should work together to meet new threats posed by a determined enemy, which had financial resources at a global level even to subvert a sovereign country, the Defence Secretary said.

Referring to recent British press reports that (9). Islamic radicals had infiltrated the British Labour Party, Defence Secretary Rajapaksa said that the Tamil Diaspora could adopt a similar strategy, if it had not already done that. The Telegraph recently quoted Environment Minister Jim Fitzpatrick as having said that the Islamic Forum of Europe (IFE) had infiltrated the Labour Party. Minister Fitzpatrick alleged that the IFE was trying to create an Islamic social and political order in Europe. The Telegraph quoted him as having said, "IFE had become, in effect, a secret party within Labour and other political parties. They are placing people within political parties, recruiting members to those political parties, trying to get individuals selected and elected so they can exercise political influence and power…"

Moshe Dyan said...

Defence Secretary Rajapaksa said that the next six years would be of crucial importance to the country as the first government elected in a post-LTTE era had to tackle a separatist threat in a different manner. ‘They may not have artillery pieces in their arsenal and their strategy will be different, but let me tell you their goal will be the same," he warned. (10).He expressed concern that a section of officialdom could help the separatist cause by trying to appease foreign governments and some funding agencies. He said that those who pontificated to Sri Lanka about the virtues of human rights, media freedom and democracy were the worst culprits responsible for crimes against civilians. He said that international press coverage of the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq would help people understand to what extent foreign powers would go to protect their security and economic interests, though Sri Lanka was being asked to give in to a bunch of killers.

Defence Secretary Rajapaksa said that they could not turn a blind eye to about 12,000 LTTE cadres taken into custody at the end of the war. (11). Although a sizeable section of them had been released, the government could not totally dismiss the possibility of their being recruited again by what was left of the LTTE, he said. He urged political parties to be aware of the danger of promoting separatist opinion at a time the new government would have to rehabilitate and gradually release over 9,000 detainees.

Gotabhaya said that the recent move to release some LTTE operatives held in connection with the assassination of Gen. (retd) Janaka Perera revealed the danger in taking the situation lightly. Timely intervention by the Defence Ministry had prevented their release. He said that the (12).political establishment would have to take into consideration the security aspects of even on-going judicial proceedings as part of their overall measures to sustain maximum possible pressure on the separatist movement. He said that many hasten to criticise the armed forces, particularly the intelligence services for lapses, though those critics never lifted a finger to help the armed forces in war against the LTTE."

Moshe Dyan said...

GR says the same thing we say.

we should be glad to have GR there.

he may be only defence secretary not influenced by politics.

it is improtant that he stays at least another 6 years in the role (or as defence minister).

The launching of this patrol vessel is observed to be an action taken to strenghthen Coast Guard activities along the coast off Rameswaram in the context of alleged presence of foreign elements including Chinese Navy in the northern seas of Sri Lanka, the sources added."

Which event are you referring to? The expulsion of Jews from Spain, or the migration of Jews away from their ancestral homeland in Israel?

I know I am right about the Jews of Spain.

You are right about Israelites .. between the Romans, and later the Islamized Arabs, Israel became quite unsafe for the Jews. However, life among Christians was not easy for Jews either, especially in Eastern Europe.

Guys,

There was an interesting program on Bill Moyer's Journal on Public Broadcasting System (PBS) TV.

He interviewed James Kwak and Simon Johnson (see baselinescenario.com)who have co-authored a book entitled "13 Bankers: The Wall Street takeover & the next financial meltdown."

They contend the following:

1. Over the last 20 years banks used their financial and political clout to buy the regulators and politicians, and create a totally unregulated environment for their operations in which there was little oversight or effective regulation.

In the area of credit cards, I know this is true .. they were law unto themselves raping any and all customers as in the wildwest.

2. They used that power to become a small oligarchy of very large banks that were too large to be allowed to fail .. and would have to be bailed out by the Govt and the US taxpayer.

They say that just six banks:

Goldman Sachs
JPMorgan Chase
Citi Group
Bank of America
Wells Fargo
and one other big bank

are now greater than $1 trillion in size, about 10 times larger than they should be ($ 100 billion), and that these banks control over 60% of the US GNP.

3. These banks use their monopoly power to make huge sums of money for the bank managers, and brokers who collaborate with them, to rip off bona-fide' investors like individuals, pension funds and governments.

4. They made huge profits by selling riskier and riskier investments to their customers without keeping uncommitted financial reserves to cover potential losses, until the investments failed. They ensured that they would make huge profits when these investments fail by shorting their own failing investments; in effect making bets to profit personally from the failure of their own products.

5. These bankers claimed they were surprised by the events, but the authors say .. they planned to profit whether the banks failed or not .. and they knew and planned the failures.

6. Banks want to increasingly get bigger to increase the profits that can be made by the managers and brokers as a result of the systems of incentives that has been put in place for them, by them.

Also, the limited number of big banks create a monopolistic oligarchy of banks that often collaborate with each other.

This is very true in credit cards; irrespective of the vanity label on the credit card, the bank you pay is invariably one of these six banks.
