Beyond 2009: The Butterfly Effect of National Security

2009 marks a remarkable point in SL history. It is an year of victory, triumph, and a certainty, with most vulnerabilities we faced as a nation deterred. We ought to live happily ever after, yet 2010 comes with more uncertainties and debate. Election heat is getting to its boiling point, with shameful betrayal and defamation. Forgotten and little spoken is the topic of national security today.

Yet the happenings have not left the topic barren. With lots of butterflies flapping their wings, we do not know when the category five may land upon us. While wishing our community a prosperous and joyful new year for 2010, this is an effort to look at the odds.

TNA Factor:

After the demise of Pussycats as a militia, the spotlight shone upon their political twin TNA, undoubtedly. Presidential Election extended this scenario. Both candidates have played Santa-Claus for TNA votes. And at least some of the official agreements contain segments that seem to threaten national security. Even if they turn out to be usual empty promises of Presidential Election, the General Election to be held immediately after, makes the promises more real. TNA will use their seats for bargaining.

However, TNA is set to prove that they're a synthetic alliance created in front of smoking AK 47 and they may fall apart into pieces. If this happens there will inevitably be lots and lots of active parties in Northern political arena, none gaining a majority of any kind. They'd sell their votes/seats at the best price they get for their variants of the same old demands. It may not be as rosy as it looks. Instead of one big federalist element there will be many little ones, and they may infest both sides during GE.

Nevertheless the diminishing of this biggest racist political movement in SL will be a welcome change. We need to move forward from elements of racism and make room for more generous and broad thinking political movements that represent one SL. Importantly, breaking up of TNA would make room for them to groom, if any.

That fallen Baton:

If such broad thinking non-racist movements fail to capitalize on TNA break up, it may make way for new Tamil militia. If TNA fails to represent Northern people, is there a political capacity in the rest to lead them? UNP is not in a position for any serious political discussion instead of providing political jokes. JVP who hinted as a good national level party, seems loosing whatever they had in the Southern regions as well. This leaves Northern Tamils with only option of SLFP, in the lack/break of TNA.

SLFP provides a hope right now. It already has some people such as Karuna [who may not be most preferred by them, but still a better choice than some unknown SLFP organizer]. I am predicting the possibility of some pussycat leaders appearing in SLFP lists in future. SLFP will provide a good non-racist political alternative for the Northern people, for few years.

But it is not enough. It needs a similar opposition as SLFP is the likely party in power. Lack of that may give opportunity for a new militia. This threat is quite high for next decade or so.

Until we have a certain picture on the Northern vote bases, and the direction of its flow, we need to pre-empt this possibility. It is a time to compare the golden years of late 2000s, in search of answers to what mistakes we did in late 70s and early 80s. How to use our military to diminish a movement in formation - that is the question for the defence establishments.

Pussycat-ospora, anger, revenge and hatred:

Anger and revenge was primarily the backbone of the whole havoc caused in SL by Tamil diaspora. More than Eelam they wanted to give us the biggest return, maybe hurt for the savage 1983, or maybe due to the superiority complex most of them seem to suffer from. And it ended up being a totally lost gamble, a huge waste of time and money of a million plus group of people. More anger has made them wanting to return to the same traits and give us a bigger blow. And they still have financial power to do so.

This is one more reason why a militia can be formed even in the death of the pussycat. If not for any other reason, diaspora cash-cow could be the prime reason for someone to create a fake "rebellion" against us. However, this seems to be an area which current defence/diplomatic establishments are tackling pretty well. We need to intense the acts. We should not rest until last active pussycat is behind bars.

Other side of the Pussycat-ospora:

While one part of them trying to give us the best blood bath possible, the other part is plotting the best political structure to make room for Eelam. The Trans- Notional Government and the corresponding elections are one segment of it. The minority forum held in Switzerland for all minority parties, is another. This alliance is highly supported by the INGOs, and many other foreign elements. Most of war crimes claims, and the defamation of SL are parts of this main plot.

Idea is to create a hostile environment for SL, and leave most minds ready to accept Eelam, should there be the slightest chance for it being declared. Also to push the GOSL to maximum in case there is some kind of negotiation.

Regrettably many local politicians including General Fonseka lately, have fallen into this plot. More dangerous will be if General looses campaign and finds life in Sri Lanka meaningless and flees to west looking for ways to revenge Rajapakses.

This is not an empty threat or a laugh-stock. In 90s when Wardharajah Perumal declared the N/E province as Eelam, [illegally] he lacked any formal acceptance from any part of the world. This was despite his capacity as the Chief Minister with [full] power of 13th amendment [although none gave him self-determination]. It would have given him good acceptance, had the world got prepared for the idea. Today's laid out foundations are for a future Wardharajah.

This is where we need to bring strong legal grounds to combat separatism. After 30years of separatist war SL is still entertaining the thinking, talking and organizing of separation. It can only combat separation by means of anti-terrorism. Separatists to date, foolishly took the same and hence got decimated. Yet we have no weapons to combat the peaceful version of separatism. This is a loophole we need to close soon, or the result will be regretful.

IDP turned Mentally Displaced:

IDPs are being settled. With them the multi million dollar topic [of NGOs] is gone. Yet the settling process looks hasty and a rash plan. Perhaps pushed into it by many such parties.

It is very important to handle them sensibly and delicately. More than the infrastructure and underlying needs, most of these people are mentally displaced, still so.

And that leaves all possibilities open. Most these people suffered in many hands, yet they may take it all from the GOSL. They may find their current lives not so filling and, in the slightest mistake, abandoned. Instead of working for their own future cum country's, they may work for country's destruction and eventually theirs.

In simple words the release was too early and primitive. In other words we need to make sure every plan we have to counter any bad formations among them, since they are very likely.

For racist politicians, for diaspora and INGOs, this bulk of ppl [together with other tamils in those regions] are the work horse. Every evil plot of the prior groups are made real by them. And for that reason they would invest their best to get these ppl lined up for their plans. Slightest mistake will be definitely highlighted in the process.

Govt should provide them all the needs and help them to get on with life and prosper. So far it looks good going. Yet the goals are still a significant distance away.

Not only the caretaking but also they should be monitored and closely spied. There is nothing wrong in spying. Today most western countries listen to Muslim circles day and night. We can do the same with them.

Mono-ethnic Enclaves, and unfair and preventive laws from Integration:

This is a topic discussed by likes of Moshe in many rounds. Needless to add, Multi-ethnic recolonization as our pals coined it, is an essence. Not only that the vast reserves of Wanni needs more people and it should be equally available for all Sri Lankans. Any laws violating that right should be removed, and challenged by means of basic rights.

As Moshe states, this is the best way to end racism. Yet they're late. This should have begun in parallel to IDP resettlement. Still never too late.

Devolu[natic]tion:

Most Australians whom I knew supported Federalism for SL, until when I told them "Hey you wanna divide an island in the size of Tasmania into so many states, ha?" Most critical reason why federalism does not apply to SL is the size of it. Very little countries there exist, whose states can be run across in a day.

Moreover it is impractical as it naturally leads up to the separation as many above mentioned forces work day and night to achieve it. Anything we mark by means of federal or any other race-based twin sister of it, will be simply another step for international recognition for eelam. And any power we grant such, is a road open to get there.

It is very clear that SL needs devolution. But most hurting needs are regarding administration and development. Not about defence and policy making. Devolution should focus these requirements. Smaller regions should be given more powers in administrating and developing their regions. Center should standardize all the policy and other critical issues including defence and should hold it under their control. Regions should be smaller than current ethnic barriers and should not have any ethnic basis.

Sadly, the lunatics who call themselves the professional devolutionists fail to understand this. In reality most such are rusted socialists who still read "Das Capital" to find best socialist ways of making love. We need to move out from here and get many "other"politicians into act. If we agree for Devolution we need to agree it all together and work hard to make it a healthy and safe plan.

Human migration and the millennium to come:

Sri Lanka is the dead end of a great human migration. Northern and Southern parts of India provided a flux of people who found nothing but great Indian ocean beyond this island. In recent millennium, Tamilnadu's population eruption has sent a lava flow of humans through to the island. It will keep on doing so within whatever legal and illegal frameworks of the day.

This means that eventually one day SL will be tamil dominant, theoretically. Today's world order saves us thanks to countries and visa barriers, hence making illegal immigration the only way. But there is no assurance that such structures will remain in tact for ever. In the millennial view this risk exists at large.

It leaves the Sri Lankans with a two way approach. Firstly be very open hearted. They should support any kinda integration of anyone into their fold. They should not base themselves on race, and the open and extended hands should embrace anyone who comes under their flag. Secondly they should be ruthless to anyone who's trying to pull down the flag.

And on this regards we need to learn everything from Israel.

In a summary; we need to address the following topics in this dawning 2010.

- Tamil racist politics: how to dismantle them
- Stop playing into their demands due to cheap political gain
- Banning Separatism
- Filling the northern political vaccum
- Increasing security of North and East. Establishing permanent camps and increasing numbers.
- Have an anticipative plan on combating terrorism at its birth.
- Taking care of IDPs, and providing them sustainable development
- Spying and monitoring the same
- Multi Ethnic Recolonization
- Combating illegal immigration and coast guard

As the new year brings a new president, these topics should be more significant when you decide on your candidate for voting. Whoever wins, these haunting questions will be nagging soon to be addressed. Failing which they'll take the nation back to 70s and 80s, making next decade bloodier than 90s.

And on the day when category five strikes, everyone will forget playing with the little butterflies flapping wings in their back yard.

Sorry, I am showing something irrelevant to this post.
See how 'lankaepuwath' misguide people. The below is what they show for their 'mathawimasuma' polls.

153 2%

Number of Voters : 7639
First Vote : Monday, 09 October 2006 18:31
Last Vote : Tuesday, 05 January 2010 01:34

However, real total number of votes (SF+MR+WK) is 6046. So there are 1593 votes missing.
Perhaps, what happens here is that votes coming to MR does not count for him, but only for the total.

SK,

wow!

the BIGGEST challenge faced by SL today is MULTI ETHNIC RE-COLONIZATION of the north.

Continuing his streak of treachery, Fonseka promises TNA to release LTTE detainees. I hope that as the SLA commander he had some idea why the LTTE terrorists were detained. Nevertheless, now that he know he has no chance among patriotic Sri Lankans, he keeps selling out his sole to terrorists.

May blessings of triple gems be with Mother Lanka!!

bovicanine,

when corrected the %s are as follows.

MR - 50%
SF - 48%

this comes close to what will actually happen. it was the last election result and in my view this time it will be the same.

Sujeewa,

Good post. However, I disagree on the following two points:

1. DEVOLUTION:

You say, "It is very clear that SL needs devolution", but what kind of devolution we need is unclear.

We certainly do not need devolution of power to regions based on any COMMUNAL CHARACTERISTIC of the residents such as race or religion.

We should not devolve power to large regions, which would endow them with SUFFICIENT STRENGTH to oppose and/or undermine the unitary character of the nation in the future.

That leaves us only devolution of LOCAL government authority to regions that are AT MOST AS LARGE AS DISTRICTS in size. The scope of LOCAL government authority should be limited, amounting to only a SUPERSET of the authority allocated to current Municipal Administrations.

All authority for Security (police, militia), Judiciary, Immigration/Emigration, International Relations, and National-Level Infrastructure Development should be reserved to the Center Government.

Local government should have NO AUTHORITY to HINDER the free-movement and settlement of people nation wide, and national ETHNIC INTEGRATION policies should be implemented nationwide without hindrance from regional authority.

Furthermore, in order to reduce the FINANCIAL BURDEN of excessive bureaucracy upon the people, the budgets of the Discrict Administrations should be limited and subject to oversight by the national government.

2. LEARNING from ISRAEL:

We should learn only those things that are GOOD from Israel, not EVERYTHING.

We should learn how to develop and maintain a vibrant DEFENCE INDUSTRY from Israel

We should learn how to foster PATRIOTISM in the citizenry from Israel.

We should learn how to develop and grow our NATIONAL ECONOMY from Israel.

But, we SHOULD NOT ADOPT Israeli policies towards colonization of Arab land in the West Bank while excluding Arabs from the benefits of equal citizenship.

Instead, we should adopt a policy of ETHNIC INTEGRATION that promotes settlement of non-Tamils in the North and East as a way of precluding Tamil separatism in Sri Lanka in the future, just as Tamil people are allowed to freely settle and live ELSEWHERE in Sri Lanka, while guaranteeing them equal citizenship throughout Sri Lanka. In other words, we demand EQUAL OPPORTUNITY to settle all over Sri Lanka that Tamils enjoy now while guaranteeing EQUAL RIGHTS, EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES and EQUAL RES{PONSIBILITY to defend and protect our nation to Tamils without let or hindrance.

It is in this latter area that I disagree with Israeli Policy .. they are gradually colonizing Arab land on the basis of the ancient Jewish residence in that land, but at the same time they are DENYING the benefits of EQUAL CITIZENSHIP to current residents .. which is patently unfair.

I DO NOT WISH for Sri Lanka to learn and adopt this policy from Israel .. for it is GLOBALLY viewed as INDEFENSIBLE and will ultimately FAIL just as the separatist and exploitative laws of APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA failed. If the Israeli policy is adopted in Sri Lanka, we will perpetuate this conflict and undermine any possibility of international support in the future, from both our friends and our lukewarm critics. It is ASKING FOR TROUBLE in the future.

Such a policy would be just as JUST AS BAD as what the Eelamists tried to do in Sri Lanka with their demand for a separate Eelam state ONLY FOR THEMSELVES, while Tamils enjoyed equal rights in the rest of Sri Lanka too. They must not be allowed to have their own cake and eat ours too!

Response to Sujeewa's post:

..........

3. Eventual TAMILIZATION of Sri Lanka:

I don't think this will happen. If Sri Lanka maintains close control of its borders against illegal immigration from South India in particular, and the world in general, Sri Lanka can continue to largely maintain its demographic character.

In fact, with the PERMANENT LOSS of 1 million+ Tamil residents of Sri Lanka to the Diaspora, Sri Lanka now has less Tamils, on a percentage basis, than at any time since independenmce. While Diaspora Tamils have the right to return I don't think they will.

One of the MOST SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS of winning of the Eelam War is the restoration of GOSL control over its coastal border.

This control, as you say, should be strengthened and maintained in the future to PREVENT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION from anywhere. All sweet talk to loosen the reigns of immigration control between India and Sri Lanka should be FIRMLY REJECTED whether it is for unrestricted religious pilgrimages, fishing, business etc, or the inundation of Sri Lanka by illegal immigrants will be the end result, threatening both NATIONAL SECURITY and WELFARE SYSTEM COSTS.

The demographics will evolve in Sri Lanka along current trends with the more educated and affluent people having less children. That means more Sinhala and Tamil rural folk will begin to predominate. As they do, they will acquire education and wealth and will join the ranks of those who will have less children. With the door to immigration closed, ultimately the demographics will achieve a new statistical equilibrium not too far removed from the current one, but with most people better educated and solvent as in developed countries such as Switzerland .. which is a desirable goal.

Severely RESTRICTING LEGAL immigration, and ENDING ILLEGAL immigration to Sri Lanka should be NATIONAL PRIORITIES.

This article is by a reputable Bengali scribe. As Sri Lankans, we need to be conscious that the biggest danger to Sri Lanka is from across the Palk Straights. The ability to manipulate their Sri Lankan puppets is something the Portuguese, Dutch, British and the Indians have done with success in Sri Lanka's past.

Ananda;

Re: Devolution

Yes indeed, I have tried explaining same. Smaller units more oriented in admin and development. Does not impact policy which shud be centralized.

Re: Israel

Yes they sideline other races in colonization, which is not what I like either. But the rest of their approach is worthy looking at.

Most importantly, how viscous they turn at enemies of the nation. Right now our leaders are visiting them in reindeer sledge and meeting them thru the chimney in red socks.

Apart from their ruthless attacks and sidelining or arabs [maintaining open prisons] I see nothing wrong in rest of the Israeli approach. Even those, considering teh kinda hostile, land connected and almost savage neighborhood, maybe inevitable. We're lucky to have a Palk straight.

Re: Tamilization of SL

I am looking at a millenium. Yes today we have all advantages of world order, and good coast guard is enough. But how long will India last? What is TN si a separate nation? How long will today's world order last?

And also even in shorter [decade/centuries] view, I do not think SL leadership will always be this firm. On their wreak days they can go to any begging distance. And they often do so. Just after winning the war our general is licking the boots of enemies of teh nation. Don't need any examples.

Note that this general has all potential to lead SL, despite all these. In my idea MR is not having so big margin right now. What if they take up SL?

Again as I said, if we do all right things we can stop this. But failing whatever, will add onto it. And there seem to be, no return unless of course they take up weapons [and then die and migrate].

Sujeeva,

- Tamil racist politics: how to dismantle them

- Stop playing into their demands due to cheap political gain

EI could be the long term solution for the above two.

- Banning Separatism
I believe that we already have constitutional tools necessary for one of the items.

For example 6th Amendment (Article 157A) takes care of separatism in a big way.

- Filling the northern political vacuum
We need to do this fast and furious. Any political vacuum is going to be breeding grounds for the generation of pussycats.

- Increasing security of North and East. Establishing permanent camps and increasing numbers.
- Have an anticipative plan on combating terrorism at its birth.
- Combating illegal immigration and coast guard

This shall be a continuation of 2009 well in to the future. Our only hope in this aspect is MR stays in power implement this.

- Taking care of IDPs, and providing them sustainable development
- Spying and monitoring the same
- Multi Ethnic Recolonization

No emphasis is good enough to show the significance of these items. Settling down IDPs soon will make sure that we future pussycats will have less of a pool to recruit. MER will ensure coherence of the society. We shall never let minorities to live in cultural isolation. Frequent school and work place exchange programs should be a vital part of it.

Finally and most importantly, we need to have proportionate number of soldiers/officers and policemen from each ethnic group. SLDFs with such a composition will make it virtually impossible for the next group of pussy cats to see the light of the day.

Srilankan said...

Solutions to all these concerns is simple.
We need a PATRIOTIC leadership.

Srilankan said...

We Sri Lankans succeeded in ending 30 years of brutal terrorists aggression in May this year due to the wholehearted contribution made by each and every patriotic citizen that enabled the armed forces to destroy the military wing of the terrorists at Nandikadal annihilating the LTTE military leadership and put an end to the life of its megalamaniac leader Prabhakaran. This splendid success could never have been achieved if not for the total commitment made by all those who contributed towards this goal, in the face of sturdy and unprecedented combined attempts made by the powerful western nations, Tamil Diaspora and proxies of LTTE, treacherous political desperados and political bandits, NGO vultures, and the South Indian political elements to force a halt to the offensive operations and rescue the terrorist leadership. In the whole history of Sri Lanka it never faced such threats and warnings from a multitude of fronts simoultaneously.

The patriotic masses who yearned for a complete wipe out of the terrorists and terrorism were however apprehensive that once again the victory will be snatched away from them as it happened in 1987 with the mere drop of Parippu parcels and Indian pressure under which President Jayawardene shamelessly acquiesced and commanded Lt. General Denzil Kobbekaduwa to halt operations and withdraw the forces to their respective barracks.

If not for this political intervention, and the shameless genuflecting to foreign pressure, Lt. General Kobbekaduwa and his troops would have wiped out the terrorists forever, as the LTTE at that time was in a nascent stage and had only a few thousand fighting cadres and had no Navy powerful than the combined navies of several Asian nations and had no Air Wing which even became a threat to India.

After President Jayawardene Sri Lanka was ruled by several Presidents and Prime Ministers and all of them failed to put an end to the rapidly growing terrorist scourge since all of them lacked determination and the political will to annihilate the terrorists, succumbed to external pressure, became deceptive to LTTE’s cunning maneouvres, failed to provide adequate men and material to all forces including the police, had no faith in the capabilities of our security forces, and moreover were ineffective to muster the backing of all patriotic masses from all walks of life for the war effort.

Annihilation of the LTTE’s military wing was possible because of a multitude of factors. The prime factor among them was the solid and staunch leadership given by the President who by making every effort to provide men and material for the forces unswervingly faced all pressures, criticisms and threats from the world’s most powerful nations and foiled all attempts made by treacherous political desperados and political bandits to topple the government with the objective of halting the operations against the terrorists. Nonetheless, we should not remain complacent of what was achieved but be very cautious of the dangers that may befall us from the combined cabal of disgruntled elements who were unsuccessful in saving the LTTE leadership.

The mere annihilation of the LTTE military wing will not make Sri Lanka safe. The last minute sturdy attempts made by western nations including the joint visit made by Foreign Ministers of two powerful western nations (initial attempt was to make it a joint visit of three Ministers) point to the fact that how important LTTE was in their neocolonial geopolitical roadmap in the face of rising Asian giants China and India.

Since Sri Lanka is situated in a strategically important location than the illegally acquired Dieggo Garcia the western nations, despite unavoidable proscription of LTTE, considered and valued the LTTE as a vibrant agent to destabilize the region, as they maintain Israel, Georgia and several other nations and terrorist organizations to destabilize regions and establish their economical and political hegemony over those regions.

Srilankan said...

aving lost the mercenary force, the LTTE, which they were nurturing to destabilize China and India, and other nations in the Asian region, the western imperialists together with the international LTTE elements and unpatriotic political desperados and hooligans would certainly attempt now to install a puppet regime in Sri Lanka. Most Sri Lankans were unaware that on October 15th some treacherous elements under Uniform attempted to snatch away the people’s victory over the LTTE, and install such a puppet regime. Swift action taken by the President and India placing its security forces on alert foiled the intended coup attempt.

If not for the swift action taken by the President, similar to what happened through an Army coup in Indonesia in 1966 overthrowing President Sukarno’s 32 year rule would have happened in Sri Lanka, and by now several thousand would have lost their lives in a blood bath worse than the Uva-Wellassa blood bath. In Indonesia, the western powers and the local treacherous political elements resentful of President Sukarno’s people friendly rule and his close relationship with China supported Suharto’s take over of power and following this take over military backed militia went on rampage and mercilessly murdered upto two million Sukarno’s party (PKI) members and Chinese nationals.

Similarly in Chile, the Popular Unity Governemnt elected in 1970 of President Dr. Salvador Allende was toppled in 1973 with active support from American CIA and a military dictatorship headed by General Augusto Pinochet was installed. Following this coup over 3,200 people were killed, at least 80,000 were imprisoned, 30,000 subjected to gruesome torture, and another around 200,000 people fled the country seeking asylum in Argentina, Peru and several other Latin American countries. It was also reported that Dictator Pinochet’s military intelligence even killed some of these exiled people going into the countries they found asylum.Likewise in 1983 the American forces invaded the carribean island of Grenada and killed Prime Ministeer Maurice Bishop and a puppet Army General named Hudston Austin was installed as the Head of State. Nicaragua is another ountry where an Amercan puppet regime was installed by deposing Daniel Ortega’s Sandinista government.

Our neighbours Bangladesh and Pakistan too were subjected to the jackboot conspiracies of the western imperialists. The father of Bangladesh Sheik Mujib ur Rehman, the elected popular Prime Minister of Bangladesh and his family members were brutally murdered by the Army on 15th August 1975 and General Zia ur Rehman was installed as President of Bangladesh.

Elected popular Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was overthrown and imprisoned by an Army Coup led by General Zia ul Haq on 5th July 1977 and he ruled the country for 11 years under an iron fist until he was disposed by his own mentors the Americans in a meticulously arranged plane crash in 1988.

All these incidents occurred when those countries were governed by persons who loved their country over and above their self and were committed and determined to develop their nations with populist agendas. Only in Malaysia they were unable to impose their hegemony since Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed clearly understood their maneouvres freed the country from all bondages with western nations and steered the country on a self-reliance agenda, and fortunately that country did not have a treacherous political force prostrating before western imperialists and exercising political banditry.

There is every possibility that the western imperialists who are unable to squeeze us economically due to forthright assistance we receive from China, Iran, Libya, Russia (their sworn enemies) and from India and many Middle East countries, will make every attempt in collaboration with unpatriotic shady political crooks and immoral elements to install a puppet regime servile to them.

Srilankan said...

When the matriarch of our nation the late Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike without bowing down to American threats nationalized the oil companies in 1961 attempts were made to imprison and murder her in a Coup led by C.C.Dissanayake, the grandfather of Ravi Karunanayake at midnight on 27 January 1962. Due to timely action taken by a patriot, S.P.Colombo Mr. Stanley Senanayake to inform her through his father in law Mr. P.de S. Kularatne saved the Prime Minister and the then Ministers of the Cabinet from the planned massacre. Incidentally the Octobdr 15th attempt to overthrow the government could indeed be another such effort that failed to materialize. The argument of dangers posed by the western imperialists to subjugate our nation is vividly confirmed by a bipartisan report on Sri Lanka that had been prepared by the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The New Yrok Times dated 6th December outlining details containing in the report says that the report emphasises Sri Lanka’s importance to protect U.S.geostrategic interests in the region. Saying Sri Lanka is too important a country to be isolated from the West, the report emphasises that “Sri Lanka is located at the nexus of crucial maritime trading routes in the Indian Ocean connecting Europe and the Middle East to China and the rest of Asia,” Coupled with terrorist sympathiser Robert Blakes uninvited unilateral visit to Sri Lanka we all Sri Lakans shoud be very cautious about the anemy agendas that threatens the future of our nation.
Anyone who has an iota of patriotism cannot allow the hard earned victory to be snatched away by the external and internal vicious hostile unpatriotic forces. It is the bounden duty of all patriotic masses to join hands placing the country before and above all other petty and parochial interests and save the nation from attempts being made to achieve through the back door and clandestinely what was failed to achieve through terrorism, econmomical subjugation, and gunpoint-diplomacy and through deception and banditry.

The forthcoming Presidential Election has offered us the best option to be visionary, to put a permanent end to underhand and despicable activities by enemies of the nation, thwart all threats to the country, and steer the nation on a development path and make it a worthwhile and peaceful country for our posterity. Let us seriously examine in the forthcoming installments of this article who is capable of steering our nation in the right path and attempts being made to hinder our march to progress and prosperity.

It will be a really huge disappointing if the result were 48%:52% in favour of MR.

This could be the only election campaign in which a main candidate has lost his credibility in grand scale. No credibility at all.

Among other things it has been proven that they lie without any shame.

Sunday Leader Editor cried and I was there when she cried: Anura

This has been refuted by SL Editor.

SL has admitted that it is bias in fvour of SF.

It has been proven with certaintity that the whole campaign is a lie.

Even from the start.

For example:Ranil did not contest.

To bring democcracy, Ranil says.

Ananda Somawansa says Ranil or and JVP would have lost therefore they needed a con (there word is common) candidate.

Given all these contradictions, if the ratio were 42%:58% it will be a big loss for MR even though he wins the presidency.

Whatever the situation or whoever the candidate regardless all contradicitons and confusions people will vote for a certain party. I think at the moment for UNP and JVP together it will be 25%.

So anything more than 35% for SF is a big worry.

I am not predicting the result. What I am saying is that any thing more than 35% for SF needs to be considered as a victory for lies, falsehood, treachery, LTTE, MIliband, solehim, Ranil, Mangala, JVP and defeat for MR. MR should take the responsibility for this. What he has done deserves him 85% majority. If not he has also done something worong acoording to voters' perception and maybe in reality too.

IT should be a real eye opener for MR.

I will be happy and hoping MR will win at least by one vote.

Larger the majority for MR larger the responsiblility he is bound by for Nation.

Sujeeva, my good chap, excellent article on multiple factors that will effect our national security in the future. I think another factor we should consider is expanding our 'Blue-water' (high seas) naval capability. LTTE bastards started out as two-bit smugglers engaging in smuggling goods between SL and Tamil Nadu. If we had 'Blue-water' naval capability then we could have put an end to that as well as hunted down LTTE arms smuggling ships in the deep seas much earlier. We need much larger number of big ships and support vessels for such capability. Colombo Dockyard PLC has the capability to build most of these ships locally, boosting our national security and the economy at one fell swoop. That's why I am really encouraged to read the following:

Sri Lanka should not consider India as a threat any longer but an opportunity to earn foreign income to the country. One such instance in the history of ship building is about to be unravelled by the Colombo Dockyard PLC, as it has constructed the first and the largest passenger vessel on the request of Indian Government, Colombo Dockyard PLC, Managing Director, CEO, Mangala P.B. Yapa told Daily News Business.

‘The Arabian Sea’ will be the first and the largest sea going passenger vessel constructed in Sri Lanka for the international market that can carry 250 passengers cum 100 tons of cargo capacity.

It will be handed over to the Central Government of India early this year.

The vessel has a contract value of Rs. 2,023 million. The vessel will float from India to Lakshadveep which is an union territory belonging to India.

Indian intelligence engineered ouster of Sarath Fonseka: Indian Reporter

President vs. General

By Seema Sengupta

KOLKATA -- Sri Lankan politics has suddenly taken a curious turn with
the highly rated President Mahinda Rajapaksa calling for a premature
presidential election to be held in January 2010.

The triumphant President, basking in the glory of having vanquished
the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) recently, was expected to
exploit the nationalist sentiment prevailing in the island nation for
garnering an electoral majority.

This move, however, may be an attempt to minimize the political damage
arising out of an emerging friction in the popular triumvirate
consisting of the Rajapaksa brothers and General Sarath Fonseka.

It is to be seen whether Sri Lankan politics, which is characterized
by the absence of a concrete political, social or economic agenda,
continues to remain engrossed in cult worship.

The brewing discontent between the Rajapaksa brothers and Fonseka has
culminated in the successful militarization of Sri Lankan society and
the politicization of its Armed Forces. The island nation is, in any
case, the most militarized society in the whole of South Asia.

Perhaps, the citizens residing in this Land of Buddha did not even
realize that extreme paranoia and a sense of vengeance have
transformed their picturesque country into hell.

While they indulged in fratricide for the last 30 years, external
elements took advantage of this hatred to sub-serve their own
interest.

Constant instigation not only dilated the bitter ethnic divide that
already existed in Sri Lankan society but also ensured that the region
remained a seething cauldron for quite a long time.

In the meantime, generations of Sri Lankans from all community and
religious belief lost the opportunity to grow and prosper in company
with the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, none of the political personalities made a serious
attempt to display the requisite magnanimity for stemming this rot.

However, in all fairness, they enjoyed very little leverage given the fact that Sri Lanka had already become a flashpoint of the Cold War.

As the U.S. Seventh Fleet started anchoring at Trincomalee Harbor, New Delhi was prodded by the Russians to initiate a dirty game for keeping Colombo in check.

Moscow's sensitivity to American influence in the Indian Ocean region was the determining factor behind this move. Accordingly, the Indian security apparatus started exploiting the anti-Sinhalese sentiment prevailing among the Sri Lankan Tamil community.

Surreptitious training, covering the entire gamut of guerilla warfare techniques, was imparted at different locations including the highly secretive military training facility at the headquarters of Establishment 22.

A special group was dedicated to collecting information on movement of outbound and inbound ships from Trincomalee Harbor.

They were specifically assigned to keep tabs on military assistance
from the U.S. and Israel that Colombo might have been receiving at that point of time, apart from assessing the Pakistani and Chinese
involvement in the region.

New Delhi was determined to continue with this covert involvement to expand its sphere of strategic influence. That is precisely the reason
why India's external intelligence agency continues to nurture healthy
assets in Sri Lanka's ruined northeast even today.

In fact, the very intelligence tipoff that revealed General Fonseka's supposed plan to unsettle President Rajapaksa by enacting a coup was
believed to have been provided by New Delhi.

India's apprehension of increasing Pakistani and Chinese involvement
in Sri Lanka actually provoked this tailored move that led to
Fonseka's ouster as the Army chief.

Now that the sacked general is out to confront his one-time
commander-in-chief politically, the entire world is bracing up to
witness a personality clash lacking decisive political and
developmental agendas.

However, the only silver lining amid this chaos is a serious attempt on the part of both parties to reach out to the ethnic minorities.

The outgoing president has ordered for immediate resettlement of the
internally-displaced Tamil population and removal of restrictions on movement of transitional camp dwellers.

Fonseka, on his part, has been bold enough to call for and accept
international scrutiny on the alleged war crimes.

Given his radical view on the exclusive Sinhalese rights over all Sri Lankan assets, the general's climb-down on issues related to crimes
committed by the Army led by him can assuage the Tamil pain to a large extent.

He also needs to build up a more inclusive political agenda by way of consensus. Since war frenzy cannot be hyped beyond a certain limit, the abject failure of the Rajapaksa regime to deliver economic prosperity might assist Fonseka's political ambition.

President Rajapaksa will require nothing less than divine intervention to tide over the growing economic crisis resulting in a steep drop in purchasing power.

Whoever tastes victory at the hustings will confront a crumbling
economy and vast majority of people willing to gloss over the war hysteria to focus on their day-to-day living condition.

A visionary approach is urgently needed to restore a war-ravaged
society's confidence and rebuild its socio-economic structure brick by brick.

The international community should pump in the requisite funds for
restoring basic infrastructure that will pave the way for future
industrialization.

One hopes the next president will harness Sri Lanka's cultural
diversity to sew a prosperous, peaceful and harmonious nation.

Anyway, there are a few spots in herarticle quite don't fit in to the current picture. For example:

President Rajapaksa will require nothing less than divine intervention to tide over the growing economic crisis resulting in a steep drop in purchasing power.

It is rather amateurish to think that such a problem, if exists, can affect only MR. In addition, RAW tipping off a potential coup by Fonseka to reduce Chinese influence, it does not make any sense since it is MR who is close to China than SF, Likewise, the author makes many incoherent statements.

In early 2007, I saw another Indian author talking about how militarized Sri Lanka is as a major issue. I felt that the author was writing out of context since it was none of her damn business about how we take care of our internal matters. Then there was one Rama Mani we kicked out. In all times, I felt that the authors are artificially injecting issues in to Sri Lankan issues. That made me suspect that this out of context publications are some amu weda.

The art of hollering lies is the exclusivity of certain politicians. In the past elections there were some outstanding examples. One such person was the late J.R. Jayewardene. Before he came to power in 1977 he said he would create a just and righteous society.
But on coming to power the country saw the opposite of the just and converse of righteousness coming to remain. When the very first Opposition meeting was held in Colombo Jayewardene’s goon squads arrived at the meeting armed with bicycle chains, clubs and knives and attacked the meeting. Several people were critically injured and SLFP trade union leader Alavi Mowlana hit with bicycle chains and was stabbed on the head. He was rushed to hospital and doctors fought to save his life. After being unconscious for a long time he recovered from the near fatal injuries to his head.
The next righteous action was seen at Belek Kade junction Galle Road, Ratmalana. A bomb was thrown at the Opposition meeting held there and a number of people were injured including the SLFP leader Madam Sirimavo Bandaranaike who suffered a minor injury on a toe. Right-click here to download pictures. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet.
Of course he also said every citizen would be given eight pounds of food grain per week when the UNP Government came to power. But the government did not give a single food grain to any citizen.
There were even more blatant lies by politicians at different times. In the 1965 election campaign, the vociferous politician Wijayananda Dahanayake went round the country telling the SLFP was going to make Sri Lanka a Chinese colony. He said there were Chinese everywhere. In fact there were so many Chinese in my hometown Galle there was a palace named China Garden now, he used to say.
The truth of course was that Galle’s China Garden, Cheena Koratuwa in Sinhala, was at least a Century old by 1965. By that time when Dahanayake said the country was teeming with Chinese people there wasn’t a single Chinese living in China Garden.
Even earlier than that in 1951 when Sir Oliver Goonetilleke was the Food Minister in the first UNP Cabinet of D. S. Senanayake he was reported saying as long as the UNP was in power a measure of rice would cost only 25 cents.
.

Srilankan said...

Premier D.S. Senanayake died a year later and his son Dudley Senanayake succeeded him. But within one year, the price of rice doubled to 50 cents a measure. The famous Hartal against jacking up the price of rice resulted in street protests with people coming out against the price increase. Among the protests eight people across the country were shot dead by the Police. Dudley Senanayake resigned.
Politicians of certain political parties arrange rumour campaigns during election times. Some of these people are paid a fee by the politicians. The rumour mongers get into trains or public transport buses and engage passengers in conversation. They slander politicians of opposing political parties.
Some three decades back this well dressed man got into a bus at a suburban town. He was telling a passenger in a loud voice that other passengers could hear that the then SLFP Minister T.B. Illangaratne owned a hotel in Switzerland. He said there was a portrait of Illangaratne in the lobby and underneath it was the legend, Prince T.B. Illangaratne of Sri Lanka!
Of course Illangaratne did not own any external assets or a hotel in Switzeralnd. Those of us who attended his funeral saw the normal middle class home he lived in during his retirement from politics. The old car that was parked in the garage of his home had not been used for many years. There was a telltale coat of dust on the car and the average old furniture that were not in their best state. We saw what a simple life he had been living on his pension. For he was one of the most honest politicians this country had seen.
These days there is much talk about corruption by the Opposition politicians accusing President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family of corruption. But an Opposition politician is yet to bring up any specific act of corruption. As usual political platforms will witness such liars in the future too. Perhaps people are now aware that there is this tribe that cannot be taken at their word

Moshe,

You and I agree that settlement of non-Tamils in the North & East is key to preventing separatism and separatist communal strife in the future.

However, we DISAGREE in that I view calling for "Colonization" alone is counter-productive. In my judgment it will attract GLOBAL CONDEMNATION as naked aggression, just as Israel is condemned, and will create problems for Sri Lanka that we don't want, and we don't need.

Settlement of non-Tamils in the North and East should be presented WITHIN THE CONTEXT of ETHNIC INTEGRATION in which government policy would be geared to creating a uniform ethnic distribution of people everywhere in Sri Lanka, while guaranteeing EQUAL RIGHTS them and allocating EQUAL RESPONSIBILITIES of citizenship.

Tamils already enjoy the freedom to settle anywhere in Sri Lanka; we now demand that right to be extended to non-Tamils.

To quote Sam Perera, EI programs should ultimately yield a society in which minorities do not live in cultural isolation, alienated from a shared national character and a shared national destiny.

We have DISAGREED on this before, especially within the context of Israel policy in Palestine, so it is no use your hammering on this any further.

My concern is for the survival and prosperity of Sri Lanka, not Israel.

The Israelis have to use their own brains wisely to ensure their survival. Given that they cannot eliminate all Arabs living in their midst, they have to either allow the Arabs to form their own state, or give all of them equal citizenship in one multicultural, multi-religious country. They cannot deny them both, and enjoy any long term security.

The Sri Lankan situation is different from Israel's in the KEY ASPECT that the Sinhala people have ALWAYS BEEN WILLING to grant EQUAL CITIZENSHIP to ALL LEGAL MINORITIES including the Tamils.

Thus, the Tamils have in Sri Lanka what few such small minorities have in most countries of the world.

Most Diaspora Tamils wait many years to gain citizenship status in other countries, and then are more than willing to accept only equal rights there. Why is it that they are unwilling to do the same in Sri Lanka?

The answer is that they don't want to do that when they feel that they can extract greater privileges from vulnerable Sri Lanka by force and strategy, with the help of Sri Lanka's foreign enemies.

It is the separatist Tamils who have ALWAYS wanted to have a separate Tamil-only state for themselves, while enjoying equal rights in the balance of Sri Lanka.

That expectation and goal must be made unachievable, unattainable by settlement of the North and East by non-Tamils .. through ETHNIC INTEGRATION with the goal of eliminating cultural isolation and fostering greater understanding between communities .. while guaranteeing EQUAL RIGHTS and EQUAL RESPONSIBILITIES for ALL.

Doubling Forces' numbers crucial for war victory - Defence Secretary

Defence.lk
January 04, 2010

In addition to the political leadership given by President Mahinda Rajapaksa it was the brave decision to double the manpower of the Security Forces that became the main factor in wining the war against the LTTE, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said.

The Defence Secretary addressing the first felicitation ceremony of Civil Security Department (CSD) officials in Anuradhapura said the timely decision of the President led to victory in the war since like in any other endeavour, a skilful, knowledgeable workforce is a must to achieve success.

The ceremony was aimed at recognizing the service of officials of CSD. At the ceremony some CSD officials received promotions by the Defence Secretary while four others were awarded certificates for their bravery and tactical skills during the war against the LTTE.

On the advice of the President, steps were taken to increase the manpower of the Three Forces, Police and CSD by 250,000. Accordingly 200,000 were recruited to the Armed Services while 35,000 to the Police and 20,000 to the CSD. The recruits underwent a complete training while encouraging them to face any challenge, the Defence Secretary said.

After the LTTE's brutal attack on civilians at Kebitigollewa, the President advised a complete overhaul of the security mechanism for vulnerable villages. On President Mahinda Rajapaksa's directives the manpower of the CSD was increased to 41,500 from 19,000, he said.

"We continuously recruited 5,000 per month for three years to the Security Forces," the Defence Secretary added.

The Government had implemented a strategy to win the war learning from past failures. CSD officials were issued T56 weapons instead of shot guns and they were put through professional training. All the CSD officers were given standard uniforms which gave them honour and dignity. As a result, of around 4,500 CSD officers took part in the final battle against the LTTE, he said.

Addressing the gathering Chief Minister of the North Central Province Berty Premalal Dissanayake said, normality was disturbed in most parts of the North Central Province due to the brutal activities of the LTTE. However, the President has led the country to defeating the LTTE allowing everyone to live peacefully without fear of death. Therefore the people will definitely pay their gratitude to President Rajapaksa at the forthcoming Presidential Election, the Chief Minister said.

Under the Defence Secretary's guidance, the CSD was reorganized and converted into a skilful unit which can overcome any crisis. The salaries of CSD officers were increased by 40 percent. Moves are underway to offer them a pension scheme, General Civil Security Department Director Rear Admiral Sarath P. Weerasekara said.

ananda,

"However, we DISAGREE in that I view calling for "Colonization" alone is counter-productive. In my judgment it will attract GLOBAL CONDEMNATION as naked aggression'

NO!

colonization is NOT a crime or a wrong thing.

in the case of israel, britain granted independance to israel and palestine although in the past both were one.

anyway in 1948 there were 2 countries. in 1967, etc. israel attacked palestine and annexed parts of it.

in international law it is illegal. strictly speaking it is not COLONIZATION of "own" territory.

sri lanka colonizing OWN LAND is no problem at all.

the confusion was due to my beliefs. i strongly believe (LOL!!) there NEVER was a country called palestine - it is and was israel.

Moshe Dyan said...

sam and ananda,

"To quote Sam Perera, EI programs should ultimately yield a society in which minorities do not live in cultural isolation"

i disagree.

culturally they SHOULD have their own things.

e.g. the punjabi community in the USA lives in a certain cultural isolation. it is not isolation at all. it is only a cultural uniqueness.

we should NEVER try to change it.

let there be 1,000s of cultures and sub-cultures. when it comes to political bargaining all that is unimportant.

e.g. 2

colombo city has 100,000 + tamils. MOST of them live in "cultural isolation" (certainly not in ethnic/racial isolation).

introducing them to other cultures is a good thing but still a certan amount of "cultural isolation" is needed for a minority community.

the same goes for the malay, jewish, chetti communities in colombo as well.

ethnic/racial isolation <> cultural isolation

our challenge is to keep this only to CULTURE not allowing it to enter politics and bargaining.

Sam Perera said...

Moshe,

Fostering the culture of choice and cultural isolation are two different things. Not seeing what other cultures do or not interacting with other cultures is isolation. A good example for it is the Malay community. They are highly integrated to main stream Sri Lanka while maintaining the Malay identity. People in LTTE controlled areas were highly isolated from the mainstream SL, on the other hand. The latter type of isolation makes it difficult to have a cohesive nation.

Moshe Dyan said...

sam,

agree with you that isolation is not desirable. but in the case of WHAT IS REQUIRED, it is RECOLONIZATION.

all human aspects of it,

1. ethnic integration
2. cultural integration
3. religious integration
4. customs integration
5. celebrating each others' cultural/religious celebrations

are SECONDARY.

these are determined by the ppl.

first we should have ppl of all races living in areas NOW DOMINATED BY ACTC, ITAK, TNA, TULF, TELO, TMVP, and other racist parties.

re: malays

they are still CULTURALLY MORE isolated than integrated than, say, roman catholics. they go to LONG LENGTHS to show that culturally they are NOT ordinary "muslims".

socially - NOT AT ALL ISOLATED.

for the sake of tamil culture in SL, a CERTAIN degree of cultural isolation is required.

if tamil writers, artists, dancers, etc. take a national view of CULTURE (not politics), they will start catering to MOST SL ppl instead of tamils. in doing so they will compromise tamil cultural productions. this has a few good and MORE bad points.

Moshe Dyan said...

sam,

this certain degree of CULTURAL ISOLATION which is essential for creativity is called "CULTURAL SPACE".

sadly, some MFs including dayan jayatileke try to mix this with "POLITICAL SPACE".

political space is the certain degree of isolation between political groups IRRESPECTIVE of race/culture/ethnicity. it has NOTHING to do with the culture.

if the POLITICAL SPACE is mixed with CULTURAL SPACE, we end up in the same shit of ACTC, ITAK, DMAK, AIADMAK, TNA, TULF, etc.

it is like the space between two partners (man and woman) which is ESSENTIAL. you don't get the fairer sex partner involved in too manly stuff. similarly they don't get us involved in too feminine stuff.

at one point we suggested to the govt to field an independant candidate preferably by the name sarath who is a disabled soldier.

he would show off his disability, claim victorious acts and try to share the credit ponseka claims. a few days to the election he will ask ppl to vote for MR and resign.

had it been done, ponseka's TNA, LTTE, HSZ, etc. love affair would never have happened.

he was "released" from his former army position. he no longer brags about his army days. now he is fully divorced from that.

had a former disabled army soldier contested against him, he would alsways had to fight for credit with him. this will not allow ponseka to move forward.

now what the govt should do is to bring charges against him and grill him. mere allegations are not going to do any good. mere allegations and no action only shows their desperation.

IF MR tries to be seen as a divine figure at the expense of GR, he is a bastard.

ponseka continues to redicule the BIGGEST WAR HERO (according to terrorism expert rohan gunaratna) and NOTHING HAPPENS!!

this is a joke.

ponseka is a national security threat and no political interference should block him from taking lawful action against ponseka.

MR's responsibility to the Nation. We want MR as president not becaue we love him but because we love our country.

MR, for the sake of the Nation must to everything legaly, morally possible to stop SF. This is the utmost responsibility of MR to the country. Once they have messed up (with good intentions with SF) they cannot do this again. MR should use everything at his disposal, legaly, rightfully and nicely.

OUR ATTENTION HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO CERTAIN ALLEGATIONS MADE IN THE PARLIAMENT OF SRILANKA REGARDING NUMBER OF TRANSACTIONS WITH THE SRILANKA ARMY. AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY I WISH TO CLARIFY THE ISSUES RELATING TO THE TRANSACTION IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER, FOR THE BENIFIT OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Our company, Hicorp International, has followed the proper procedures when bidding for tenders with the Sri Lankan Army, Navy and Air Force. As President of HiCorp International, I take full responsibility for all tenders bid for by us, and our partner companies British Borneo Defense, Satpro Communications and Hitrone LC. We believe that these tenders were granted due to the lower bids we consistently offered to the Sri Lankan forces.

Further, I would like to confirm that although General Fonseka was aware of these bids as Chairman of the Tender Board, his decision to award the tenders to us, were not affected due to my relationship with him or his ownership in the company.

2) Dismantle all HSZ restrictions and re-allow LTTE to encroach into HSZ and commence on setting up claymore ambushes (as RW did the same in 2002)

3) Merge N and E so that once again the stepping stone for “thamileelam” is created (just as JRJ did earlier and later reaffirmed by his nephew RW in 2002)

4) By doing all of the above, take the country back to WAR and have his Son in Law’s Hicorp provide the necessary armaments/supplies to the SLDF

What a crafty but effective scheme!

I expect more cross overs both ways. When crossing its all about personal gains. Critical factor for these jumpers is GE not PE. General algorithm at this time is simple.

1. You think you may not get nominations => cross

2. Even you get nominations you may not win even when your party wins and if you think you can win from other party => cross

[You like to be an opposition MP rather than not becoming a MP.]

3. The amount paid to you right now > Money you may earn in next 5 years even as a minister => cross

Apart from propaganda and your related supporters votes there will be no or little effect on voters.

However, MR made one mistake treating UNP cross overs over traditional SLFPers. Any one crossed once can do it again.

Gonz is a problem for national security and to my country no matter he wins or loses, as long as he is alive.

I think MR should proceed smoothly until 26. Be prepared for any coup/ insurgency around 26. Until 26 MR should convince public that what a traitor he is and his corruption. After PE, before GE MR should initiate legal action with possible arrest.

Arresting now will be playing into JVP hands. JVP can do only one thing to this country and they did it in 71 and 88 and 20 years cycle is over due now. Even an attempt to arrest will be a good reason for JVP to start an insurgency - burning buses etc and country will be in chaos, similar to 88 PE era. ..............
Sri Lanka candidate Gen Sarath Fonseka woos Tamils

By Saroj Pathirana
BBC Sinhala

The former Sri Lankan army commander now competing for the presidency, Gen Sarath Fonseka, has pledged to grant an amnesty to all former militants.

Gen Fonseka has submitted a proposal named "Immediate Relief Measures for War Affected Persons," to the leader of the Tamil National Alliance party.

He is eager to win the Tamil vote in forthcoming presidential elections.

Over 10,000 former Tamil Tiger cadres are currently detained in different detention centres in Sri Lanka.

Gen Fonseka has pledged to release those who have no evidence against them "within one month".

The main opposition candidate has also pledged to dismantle controversial High Security Zones (HSZs) "in keeping with the relocation of the security forces".

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentary group leader R Sampanthan was told of the Immediate Relief Measures for War Affected Persons programme by Gen Fonseka after talks on Monday.

Emergency regulations

"As an overall measure affecting all Sri Lankans, the state of emergency presently in force and the regulations made there... are to be terminated," the document says.

The government insists it is too early to terminate emergency regulations, arguing that the threat posed by former Tamil Tiger rebels is still active.

Gen Fonseka also pledged to disarm all armed groups.

"All paramilitary cadres and armed groups are to be dismantled forthwith," the document said, without naming any of the groups concerned.

In an apparent response to TNA leader's earlier accusation that the government was seizing lands in the east, Gen Fonseka has pledged to terminate the practice while at the same time cancelling allocations deemed "not transparent" or "corrupt".

There was also no mention in the document as to whether a Fonseka presidency would offer any political solution to address the grievances of the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka.

The former army commander is competing against President Mahinda Rajapaksa to be the next president of Sri Lanka.

Twenty other candidates are also contesting the elections to be held on 26 January.

Good God! The TNA is now a "moderate" Tamil Party!

.........
S.Lanka's main Tamil party backs ex-general

Yahoo.com (AFP)
January 4, 2009

COLOMBO (AFP) – Sri Lanka's main minority Tamil party on Monday backed the main opposition presidential candidate, Sarath Fonseka, who as army chief led the offensive that crushed Tamil rebels last year, officials said.

Fonseka, a former four-star general who quit in November following differences with his political boss President Mahinda Rajapakse, pledged in a letter to end a state of emergency if he was elected in the January 26 vote.

The moderate Tamil National Alliance (TNA) agreed to back Fonseka's campaign after he signed a three-page programme that he hopes to implement in the island's former war zone, a party official said.

"We have decided to support General Fonseka, but a formal announcement will be made on Tuesday," said the TNA official, who declined to be named. The TNA has 21 seats in Sri Lanka's 225-member parliament.

In his letter, a copy of which was seen by AFP on Monday, Fonseka promised to free Tamil detainees within a month if no charges had been brought against them.

The former military chief, who is credited with leading the military drive against the separatist Tamil Tigers, also promised to establish a completely civilian administration.

"Full restoration of all institutions of civil administration from the office of village headman upwards will be free from military, police and political interference," the letter to the TNA said.

The TNA was at one time seen as a proxy of the Tamil Tigers who were crushed in May with the elimination of the rebels' military leadership after 37 years of fighting.

Fonseka pledged to end the state of emergency which had been in force since March 1983, largely to deal with Tamil rebels as well as militants among the majority Sinhalese.

The emergency gives sweeping powers to security forces to arrest and detain suspects for long periods without trial. France has led international calls on Sri Lanka to end the emergency after the ethnic conflict ended in May.

Rajapakse called the January poll in a bid to capitalise on the victory over the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) who launched their campaign for a Tamil homeland in 1972.

Fonseka and Rajapakse have been at loggerheads since the end of the conflict. Fonseka quit after accusing the government of sidelining him and falsely suspecting him of trying to stage a coup.

Fonseka promises better deal for cops

by Piyasena Dissanayake and Jinasena Rathugamage

Opposition Presidential candidate General (Retd) Sarath Fonseka said that if he was elected, he would introduce legislation enabling policemen to retire after 22 years of service.

He said the Rs 10,000 monthly pay hike promised by him to public employees would be granted both to the Police and military personnel. The present food subsidy given to the Army would be extended to the Police personnel, too, Fonseka said.

Addressing a propaganda rally in Vavuniya, he said he would create an environment where Police personnel would be in a position to serve with dignity.

He said Police service had been very much politicised under the present regime so much so that even policemen had been deployed to guard cutouts and banners of certain Presidential candidates.

Blow to faith-based politics in Bangladesh

January 6, 2010

All religion-based political parties in Bangladesh will be forced to drop Islam from their names and stop the use of faith while electioneering following an apex court order, which would facilitate “automatic restoration” of the word secularism in the constitution.

The Supreme Court upheld a 2005 ruling by the High Court throwing out the fifth amendment of the constitution, which had allowed religion-based politics to flourish in the country during the last three decades.
Following the apex court order, dozens of Islamic political parties must drop Islam from their name and stop using religion during their election campaigns, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said.

His comments came as newspapers speculated about the fate of “religion-based” political parties after the apex court earlier this week withdrew a stay on the High Court verdict declaring illegal the fifth amendment to the constitution.

The Fifth Amendment was carried out during late president Ziaur Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government in 1979, which had allowed the religion-based political parties and added the Arabic “Bismillah-Ar-Rahman-Ar-Rahim” or in the name of God, the most merciful, benevolent in the preamble. Ahmed, however, said the words “Bismillahir Rahman ar Rahim” in the preamble of the constitution would remain intact as the High Court verdict did not say anything about the words and those were part of the constitution’s preamble, not of the “main body”.

“The secularism would automatically be restored in the constitution” once the High Court verdict is implemented, he said.

The fifth amendment had also legitimised subsequent government of General Ziaur Rahman after the August 15, 1975, assassination of Bangladesh’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members in a military putsch that had also toppled his post independence Awami League.

More obstacles
But legal experts and political analysts said the process to scrap the Fifth Amendment might face further obstacles as BNP Secretary General Khandakar Delwar Hossain and three pro-BNP lawyers filed two separate petitions with the apex court seeking reinstatement of the stay on the High Court judgement despite the government reluctance to fight the case.

The original constitution of 1972 embodied four fundamental principles of nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism.

Thousand Hectares plus Nepal landmass gulped by India: CA Team

TelegraphNepal.com
January 04, 2010

The International Relations and Human Rights Committee of the Constituent Assembly has concluded that along the open border from Susta of Nawalparasi to Tanakpur of Kanchanpur districts, India has occupied Nepali lands at several locations and that the Indian security forces have been harassing Nepali citizens all along the border from East to West.

After making on-the-spot visits along the Nepal-India border, the CA team had organized a press meet in Dhangadi January 3, 2010.

The team leader Mr. Padma Lal Biswakarma told reporters that India has illegally occupied thousands of hectares of Nepali lands from Susta to Tanakpur.

“The presence of State is non-existent along those areas, the Indian security forces are not allowing the Nepali citizens to till their own registered lands”, Biswakarma revealed.

Nepal’s border expert Buddhi Narayan Shrestha is of the opinion that India is inching towards Nepal step by step each minute.

He made this remark while talking to the BBC-Nepali Service, January 3, 2010.

The BBC-Nepali Service had carried out a comprehensive report on the issue of Land Grab by India.

“For each and every Kilometer, 25 Indian Security personnel have been deployed compared to one from the Nepali side”, Mr. Shrestha said at the Press meeting in Dhangadi.

This speaks well of Nepali sincerity as regards the defense of our borders.

Two delegations representing the CA members made field visits at the border areas. Ramprit Paswan led a delegation to the Eastern Part of the country and the other led by Maoists’ CA member Mr. Padma Lal Biswakarma towards the Western part.

Interestingly, some Nepali Congress, TMLP and even Unified Maoists Party parliamentarians who were also part of the same delegation returned mid-way to Kathmandu without making the visit.

Kiran Yadav of Nepali Congress, Salauddin Ansari of Tarai Madhesh Loktantrik Party (TMLP), Iswari Prasad Dahal and Lalita Kumari Saha of the Unified Maoists’ Party had returned to Kathmandu.
This has some meaning underneath.
Is the PM listening? Are the Maoists ready to take back the gulped Nepali lands? Is the Nepali media ready to disseminate this news? And above all, is the Nepal Army aware of this grim reality? Or the Nepal Army is just an ornament?
Wake up!

The article below projects A CLOSE RACE between MR and SF in the upcoming PE, on the basis of PAST ELECTION RESULTS.

That projection is ALL BS, that ignores the accomplishments of the MR-GOSL.

MR will win a LANDSLIDE Victory.

The previous election was between politicians PROMISING to execute their respective election platforms, between a relatively new presidential candidate (MR), and a well-known political hack who had REPEATEDLY FAILED to DELIVER RESULTS in the past (RW), and BETRAYED the nation to its ENEMIES.

The current PE is between an incumbent President (MR), who has delivered a victory in a war previously deemed to be UNWINNABLE, against a man who has shot-himself-in-the-foot by betraying the people who won that war and adopting inconsistent vacillating positions everyday.

In the midst of a global economic meltdown, the MR-GOSL has

- maintained a low unemployment rate (4% vs. 12.5% in the USA),

- delivered a booming stock market, rapid development of infrastructure,

- brought in vast sums of foreign funds to support that development, and

- is supported a party that largely represents the ordinary Sri Lankan citizens who BORE THE BRUNT of the WAR.

Ordinary people, in their teeming millions, KNOW that the opposition now accusing the MR-GOSL of excessive corruption was vastly MORE CORRUPT when they were in power. Also,

- They KNOW that MR-GOSL had to placate various parties to preserve a stable government while he was engaged in winning the war and that he is asking for an massive electoral victory to dismantle those measures of compromise that he was forced to make, IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST.

- They KNOW VERY WELL who is now aligned with the ENEMIES of Sri Lanka.

- They KNOW who went around demeaning the war effort comparing "Alimankada" to "Pamankada."

- They KNOW which candidate is supported by the TNA that was largely a subservient creature created by the late Sun God Velupillai Prabhakaran.

- They KNOW of our foreign enemies, waiting in the wings for a SF-UNF victory, to bring the War Heroes who liberated our nation to trial on manufactured "War Crimes" charges.

- They KNOW which party on two occasions, inflicted pain and suffering on the people of Sri Lanka pursuing their abstruse murderous idealogy of class-warfare, to elect them to power. Oh, No ... the JVP will never be given that opportunity to rule in Sri Lanka.

No, I don't think the people of Sri Lanka are so UNGRATEFUL, and SO FOOLISH, to ignore these facts and believe the LIES broadcast by the UNF.

MR will win a LANDSLIDE VICTORY on January 26, 2010!

Q ( to SF): Corruption is a key platform of your campaign but there have been allegations of corruption leveled against you particularly concerning your son in law`s involvement with Hicorp.

A (SF): These allegations are absolutely baseless. Hicorp Sri Lanka was a local company founded by some young Royalists, many of whom were known to my son.

However my son had no direct connection with the company and despite submitting tenders it never won any contracts. Hicorp of the USA was registered in Oaklahoma and my son was a point of contact for the company though he was not involved in founding it. The company needed a US address and Danuna`s was provided as a contact address, that was the extent of his involvement.

While that company did win a tender to supply security cameras to army headquarters documents prove that this tender was awarded while I was recovering from the 2006 suicide attack. I was in hospital and played absolutely no part in awarding the tender.

My point is that India is an existential threat to Sri Lanka and the we should not discount India's potential to cause mishief. It is my opinion, also stated in the article that the whole MR-SF affair was orchestrated by Indian intelligence.

-------------------------------
India can ochestrate things in to a certain extent. But MR-SF affair is our own. There is no point blaming others for that. We have to admit there are lot of power hungry people in SL and unfortunately SF is one of them.

We have threats from the west as well as India and we need to figure out a way to manage that effectively. I don't believe what is happening in Nepal applies to us rigth now since MR clan is doing a good job on managing India by keeping them engaged. Also if there are big Indian Investments in SL, they would make sure that SL becomes a stable country.

I don't agree at all.

MR and company will not always be there to protect Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka must be strengthened in every way to resist the enemies of yesterday, who are friends today, but maybe enemies again tomorrow. A foreign policy based on INTERNAL STRENGTH and STRONG ALLIANCES with other major powers, that will instinctively be sustained by successive Sri Lanka Govts, irrespective of party, must be embedded in the political psyche of the people of Sri Lanka, to ensure that it never again falls prey to external enemies.

Our fair weather Indian "friends" can swallow us whole if we are UNPREPARED for the unpredictable changes in their internal and external politics. Yesterday, India spawned terrorism in Sri Lanka at the behest of Tamil Nadu, and of Soviets concerned about Sri Lanka's move towards the West. Today, India has reversed its economic policies, is allied with the US, and is friendly towards Sri Lanka. Tomorrow, the terrorism and communal strife affecting 800 million of its people, may drive Indian states to disintegrate at an accelerated pace into smaller entities controlled by former terrorists; the political landscape of India is undergoing an uncertain transformation as we speak.

Sometime in the next decade, a weak Center Govt may emerge in India that is more subject to blackmail by Tamil Nadu, with policies radically different those of India today. It may then quickly reverse current Indian policy towards Sri Lanka, because the prime directive is to capture and retain political power even by throwing the vulnerable former friends to the wolves .. as we see in Sri Lanka with SF.

We must retain friendly ties and cooperate with India when it serves OUR NATIONAL INTEREST, but we must be PREPARED to FEND OFF both Indian threats, and sweetly sugarcoated Indian economic domination through excessive investments in Sri Lanka. NO FOREIGN NATION should be given the opportunity to blackmail Sri Lanka MILITARILY or ECONOMICALLY.

A key to being able to SURVIVE as a SMALL but UNITED INDEPENDENT NATION is to AVOID EXCESSIVE ECONOMIC & MILITARY DEPENDENCE on India, keeping uppermost in our minds that India's politics has always been VERY FICKLE in the PAST, and will be so in the FUTURE as well.

Those who FORGET the LESSONS of HISTORY, are CONDEMNED to SUFFER the SAME FATE again.

I will never merge North and East

DailyNews.lk
By Chaminda Perera

*Opposition singing different tune in North

*Will never give false promises

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday stressed that he would never merge the North and the East under his administration. He said certain elements in the Opposition are changing its tune when they go to the North with the sole objective of winning the election.

The President was speaking at a meeting with handicraftsmen, representatives of National Poets Association and Dhamma school teachers at Temple Trees yesterday.

He added that certain elements in the Opposition promised the people in Jaffna that North and the East will be merged under their administration and sought their support to win the election.

The President said the Opposition is engaged in a kind of politics based on false promises.

He stressed that he can not give false promises because of an election. The President added that he is committed to rebuild the country while promoting its unity and territorial integrity. He said the Government will soon implement a program under which over 200,000 youth can obtain foreign employments.

He said the Government has successfully negotiated with several countries over this matter.

President Rajapaksa said the country will be brought under a massive development drive and request the people of all communities to join hands with the Government to make this endevour a success.

He said the all main roads in the country were developed while a war on terrorism was going on and the Government did not deter any development activity because of the war.

He said the poets played a pivotal role in the country’s freedom struggle and they were the driving force behind the revival of people during the second freedom struggle too.

The President added that the Government has focused special attention on the development of the handicraft industry in Sri Lanka. “We have opened new marketing avenues for the involved in the handicraft industry by reorganizing Laksala,” he said.

The President said the Government is prepared to extend assistance to the people who are involved in the handicraft industry .

“We should look after the handicraftsmen well in the latter stage of their life and a program to ensure their welfare is in the offing,” he said.

VIDEO: Lal Kantha to support Mahinda?January 6, 2010 03:36 pm
There are so many stories circulating today. There are stories about us also, said Agriculture Ministry Maitripala Sirisena in response to a question by a journalist at the Mahaweli Centre this morning.

Mr. Sirisena was responding to the question whether Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna parliamentarian and trade unionist K.D. Lal Kantha would switch sides and support President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

An amused Minister Sirisena gave a funny laugh and said, “I don’t know. You have to ask him.” When the journalist persisted, and said that he had information top the effect that Mr. Lal Kantha had discussions with the President, Mr. Sirisena said, “Yes, Mr. Lal Kantha telephones the President on and off,” and refrained from confirming the news.

Anti-Sri Lankan lobby turns to sex and panties

January 6, 2010 01:53 pm
Bookmark and Share

Eroticism and sex on the internet sells. And it spreads fast. Resorting to this impact on humans, an activist group is attempting to un-sell Sri Lankan products, especially lingerie which have been accepted and are in great demand in the West.

Titled ‘No Blood for Panties’ it portrays a young couple in a provocative bedroom scene. But when the female lowers her panty, the male sees the label ‘Made in Sri Lanka’ and turns away.

The videos are part of a campaign to boycott products made in Sri Lanka and help end the oppression of Sri Lanka’s Tamils, the activist group claims.

Sri Lankais one of the largest suppliers of sexy lingerie to major brands, including Victoria’s Secret.

“Boycott Sri Lanka is very excited about its release of the video series,” says group representative Anjali Manivannan. “This video series allows us to reach Americans who might otherwise be unaware of the repercussions of their consumer habits.”

“Sri Lanka uses tax revenue from the textile industry to oppress Tamil civilians and detain them in IDP internment camps,” claims Manivannan. “No Blood For Panties sends the powerful message that buying ‘Made in Sri Lanka’ items and supporting state-sponsored human rights violations is unsexy. It sends the message that being a conscious consumer is where true sexiness is.”

“Due to Sri Lankan government-imposed media restrictions many Americans are unable to grasp the gravity of the Tamil people’s plight in Sri Lanka. Boycott Sri Lanka urges every potential customer to pledge to boycott products made in Sri lanka. We made No Blood for Panties as an innovative tool to advance consumer conscience among the American public,” claims Manivannan.

It is time for SL to take the propaganda serious. We need to have a group of people working fulltime in countering the anti-SL propa campaighn. It shud consist strong diplomats like DayanJ etc and also artists and many expats. Ppl who understand the matters of teh world. It shud not consist teh likes, J RP P Soori or Ratnasiri Wickramanayake. Basically we're using their language for them.

If they go down with ads and cheap propa paths, we shud also do. It is time to promote ourselves in world as a nation. It has other benefits of being popular, marketing, tourism etc.

It is not hard to win the campaign, if we use our head. It is timely if anyone can raise this to top most circles.

If it takes to divide the world into two let's do so. It is better than having it one way.

Does anyone know that K D Lal Kantha is about to cross to MR?

Has anyone missed that Anuruddha Rat-Vat-Te crossed but it was kept low as SF's one main support party was killed in Udathalawinna case allegedly by his ppl?

Also noted one Mayantha Dissanayake has crossed but honestly it took so long for me to remember who it was.

Nevertheless, I said sometime back, that there is no such trend set for Sarath. Right now the happenings tell me, the traitors of teh nation have been successful in creating a trend for him. This is mostly thanks to Mervyn, Tharunyata hetak, ITN, Rupavahini and few other idiots in MR camp. MR's current campaign is one of the weakest and cheapest campaign I ever saw.

SF's ppl set this trend by lying. And providing contradictory and impractical plans to each group of people. The remaining time is not enough for the people to gather and put together the dreams given by Sarath and try and see how they can realize them together. If they try doing it, they will see that teh pieces do not fit and jigsaw is not possible to be solved. Pity that some people fail to realize it and they fall into their version dream given by SF.

diff people vote for SF to;

- end exe presidency and for him to become ceremonial

- keep exe presidency and build the nation

- to bring ranil to power

- to demolish ranil and take UNP under his ctrl

- to demolish UNP

- To be a good dictator

- To preserve democracy

....

It is an endless list of incompatible dreams.

But some others would vote for Sarath in order to;

- get pussycats out from current arrest

- remove High Sec Zones [the very zones he resisted to withdraw from during RW's days]

- Take Palaly from SLAF

- De-merge N/E [now where is that clown who was telling us that MR is gonna do this?]

These promises are not copied from ITN, I'm referring to the published agreements of TNA and Gonason. Note that these are more important than many other shit topics. Some idiots fail to notice. And didn't someone say that freedom is like Oxygen and you only feel its value when you do not have it. So wait for eelam war V onwards to begin.

Poll predictions as at now.

MR - 50-55%
SF - 43-48%
Sivajilingam+Wikarabahu - 2%
Rest insignificant

This means that SF reserved a majority of Northen votes, and most tamil votes. Muslim votes divided and a significant portion of floating votes too. Yet what we dunno is how many genuine UNP/JVP will vote for him. That counts for ~25-30%. My above numbers are assuming they'd vote for SF. But if they keep silent numbers may vary quite badly for SF.

Yet the contest has become open and trend for SF is set. We will see it in few weeks.

- Lies are gobelled.
- Confusions are well planned that each individual has a reliable story to tell. Confusions only if you trying to put together them. Very little ppl go that distance
- flipflops, well, not much such happening right now.

On top of that MR's folks are talking utter nonsense [until few days ago]. Now they've found Hicorp and that is a good topic. Still many ppl would think it is a lie created to cover Mr's corruption. Little too late sadly.

I do agree on to a greater extent, but I think MR campaign have enough time to rectify If they work really hard (but still no positive sign yet).
From my point of view what SF campaign is trying to accomplish is to Maximize the damage to MR vote base(they are not trying to win MR vote base toward them, instead they are tying to make a hatred toward MR with corruption charges so that around 10% of his vote base abstain from voting) with some comparable gain to their vote base (JVP + TNA + SLFP cross overs + floating votes).
From MR's campaign perspective, he should win this decisive 10% of his own vote base and considerable fraction of JVP + floating votes(he won't gain that much from TNA).
So best strategy for MR is to split up the JVP(Do I need to say he is mastered this art?) which will lead him to gain from possible SF's vote base + floating votes.
And the big plus of this approach is he is attacking main cog of the SF's propaganda mechanism which will ultimately hinder the false momentum of the SF's campaign to a greater exten

Ninja,

Even with this treacherous agreement between Fonseka and TNA, I am not sure if we have seen the lowest point of his streak of betrayals. Fonseka is literally ready to reverse every gain made by 26,000 war heroes who gave the lives for Mother Lanka. Fonseka seems to have gone insane for his own greed of power. The other possibility is that he is suffering from a brain decease that impairs his judgment.

I will not be surprised to see Fonseka agreeing to bulldoze the sacred tree and the temple of tooth.

May Blessings Triple gems Be with Sri Lanka.

Sarath Fonseka Promises the TNA to Merge North & East!

God Damn his Treacherous Black Heart!

.............
Sri Lanka Tamil party conditionally agrees to support opposition candidate

By Sujith Madugalle
Colombopage.com

Jan 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka's major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance has decided to support the common opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka at the forthcoming presidential election on several conditions.

TNA parliamentary group leader R. Sampanthan told reporters this afternoon that opposition candidate agreed to implement TNA's proposal when he is elected to the post of President in Sri Lanka.

The TNA Leader however has refused to give details of the confidential agreement they have inked with General Fonseka.

"The General primarily agreed to withdraw the High Security Zones in North and East and he also agreed to merge the Northern and eastern Provinces," Sampanthan said.

"Apart from that common-amnesty would be granted for LTTE suspects who are in government custody," he added.

"President Mahinda Rajapaksa has refused to implement these two proposals put forwarded by us when we met him recently but General Fonseka and the UNP has agreed to implement it," Sampanthan said at the press briefing held at the parliament complex today.

Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said 14 conditions put forwarded by TNA to the government were turned-down at the first instance because of the threat to national security posed by the proposals.

The Minister pointed out that this proposal has been drafted by the legal advisor of LTTE, V Rudrakumaran who participated for peace talks with the then UNP government.

"Sri Lanka's sovereignty is not a tradable commodity for us," the Minister said.

He accused TNA for activating LTTE agenda in a different face and vowed to defeat them politically at the January 26th election.

"President Rajapaksa has defeated the LTTE militarily and now ready to defeat them politically as well," the Media Minister explained.

Reportedly the UNP MP Jayalath Jayawardena together with some key NGO leaders has fixed this political agreement between the TNA and General Fonseka.

This opinion poll conducted by the social scientists of the University of Kelaniya has indicated 62.53% voter turnout for President Mahinda Rajapaksa while 29.12% for the main opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka.

This may change into a land slide victory for MR by 26th of Jan:

I have never seen an incoherent, contradictory, confusing and delusional, hateful political campaign like SF's which is entirely based on lies. This is a fact.

In any situation there is a blindly-tied vote of 25% for UNP and JVP at the moment. (Previously such % was larger but there was leaking from that to MR's side. Many people who have never voted any party other than UNP have voted MR at recent times)

Then 25% plus 10% (maximum) due to TNA and others.

So MR should get above 65%. This is not my prediction of the result.
If MR gets less than 65% then MR should take the responsibility.

Even if he gets more than 65% he should be responsible and respedtful for voters. He is the servant of the voters. (This does not mean he needs to appease voters.) He should take brave decisions for the benifit of the whole Nation and communicate openly with people giving his reasons for decisions. NO more Mervins/ Kudu/ Underworld/Matha.

He must work for the country. Otherwise History will judge him a traitor.

Thus any thing less than 65% for MR is a victory for SF's treachorous parties.

Through out the world Education is becoming more and more like Rilaw Training for Pola.

Show us how you carry gifts to visti your Mother in Law, Rila Master commands.

Rilawa does it very well. The audience laughs.

The Rilva does not know what it is doing or why the audience is laughing or the meaning of gift or moher in Law.

That is our education.

More developed the countries, more the rila training education.

By grants and other gifts tied to conditions, Education in Sri Lanka is also slowly turning in to a Rila system.

In that case, I am arguing for your case; Then think what should be the purpose of education. Just to hang your Diploma in the living room as a show-piece, or it is about thinking, reasoning, reflection?

Do you know in counting wise and writing wise Sri Lanka is going down because they are starting to follow educations methods coming from WEST. (you may be able to find out statistics on this)

It is not about time. It is about motive of who controls Education.

For instance, I trust my doctor as an individual doctor. As a person of the institution of Medicine I do not trust them. Since the Universities and Pharmaceutical companies big food companies do not care about health. They care about profit. Proof how come Coca -Cola is an approved drink for sale in the USA, UK and Sri Lanka and other countries.

I have been involved in education for many decades. I have taught in Sri Lanka, USA, KSA and Australia.

It is my perception and considered opinion that Modern Education is more and more void of Samma Sathi.

This is a big topic. Let us agree your comment about my comment is right but keep thinking about it.

Leaving politics alone, predictions down to the second decimal point is not right. To put numbers like this, the margin of error should be at the second decimal place also. I honestly don't think that such accuracy is possible until actual ballots are counted. The survey publisher should make sure to round off the numbers to the margin of error.

/A scientific survey conducted by the University of Kelaniya has shown a clear majority for the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the forthcoming presidential election./

What the purpose of these surveys anyway?

One classic is BJP winning all the polls and losing the election.

In SL we have polls wining both MR and SF and astrologers claiming victory for both MR and SF.

Is the conclusion "there are large number of voters in SL deciding which candidate to vote based on polls or astrologers"..?? I think so.

Swarnajith Udana said...

Then again, remember that usually any opinion poll has 95% confidence. That means Among all samples 95% of them lie in the interal say x-4% and x+%4. Then there are 5% samples that lie out side this interval.

What an opinion poll says there is 95% probability that the actual result (at the time of the poll) lie in this interval x-4% and x+%4. This means there is always 5% that the actual result lies outside.

So until the actual election one cannot be absolutely certain. There are a few occassions that scietific opinion predictions have gone wildly wrong (but rare).

Threr may be statisticans among us here. They can clarify the issue further

Swarnajith Udana said...

In Sri Lanka the most opinion polls are selective samples. They are not 'valid' predictors at all.

Purely random sampled and rigourously sicintific surveys are good indicaters and they raely goes wrong.(5% chane of being wrong)

Sun Day Times polls have gone worong all the time. These are picked by international agencies.
The problem with Sunday Times poll may be that they are taken from the City(bias areas).

SU,Rana,

If it is 95% confidence interval (standard opinion poll level) then below are the sample size and moE.

Sample Size MoE (%)
100 9.5
1,000 3.0
10,000 0.9
100,000 0.3
1,000,000 0.1
10,000,000 0.03

If we have a sample as big as 10,000 then MoE is 1% or a sample as big as 1,000 then MoE is 3%. The true accuracy heavily depends on randomization of the sample also.

Swarnajith Udana said...

Sam: Thanks!

I think Kaalniya sample is more than 10000 going by their previous surveys. Then there is another error here. Larger the sample, largr the time consumed. Then it is not a snap shot of the elecotrate. There are people who wil decides vote for one party in the morning then to another in the evening. They determine according the TV sound bites.

Even if it is a large sample 95% confidence interval means the actula result can lie outside the predicted interval with 5% of probability. More the opinion polls predicting the samy type of result gives more indication.

"All indications are that SF’s popularity gaining while MR’s voter base is declining."

this is true.

one BIG reason for this is the ponseka HATE campaign. unfortunately in SL HATE travels MUCH MUCH faster than anything else.

MR camp MISERABLY FAILED to match ponseka's DIRECT and indirect hate. ppl see this as a sign of weakness and trying to cover corruption.

mere mud slinging not supported by CONCRETE ACTION is not going to help the MR camp.

they MUST escalate the battle to the next level - COURT CASES AGAINST PONSEKA.

this is where ponsekas CANNOT retaliate!!

the battle will be ONE SIDED. and one winner.

at first some idiots will protest against it, but the majority will be then convinced. by now the majority knows about ponseka's adventures very well. they now need some ADMISSIBLE PROOF.

Rana said...

Moshe,

Come on! Be realistic, you cannot start court cases against a presidential candidate just 20 days before the election, no matter how good/bad is the case.

I think, voters are having bigger problems than separatism now. What I heard is women are against MR due to sky rocketing prices of essential items and many people are fed with high handed militarised rule of MR. Political thuggery, favouritism and corruption has its limits. Mahinda should have known that as an experienced politician.
People recognise MR as a war hero and a patriot of the highest calibre but not prepared to sacrifice the country and its well being as a perpetual gift to a one family.

There is a report that says thousands of army soldiers are ready to go on leave and support SF with counter thuggery and poll security.
I may be wrong but some news items are not good for MR at all.

Swarnajith Udana said...

Moshe that is right. MR's Camp must be aggressive in legal manner. Not by Mervin's type barking. As Wimal W does. What W.W does is not enough. It needs to be taken to the next level. Making SF angrier in a decent and lawful tacttic is nice here.

but it works. from what i hear govt is going to do EXACTLY that.

agree with inflation. ppl are mad about the govt during the festive season. but NOW it is gradually losing appeal. anyway when the court cases start, ppl will lose hope on ponseka.

BTW the trend you said (to which i agreed) was BEFORE the danuna revelations.

govt is hellbent on protecting GR and SS. they know VERY WELL that these 2 will be killed by ponseka IF ponseka happen to win the election.

TF, they are willing to do ANYTHING.

its great that BLOODY IDIOT NIANDATHAL mervyn has been kept out of the scene so far.

i'm in the process of convincing ** to take legal action. its a hard sell so far. seems like there IS some understanding between MG/GR/BR and SF on each other's basic safety after the election. but i'm not giving up.

one or two hate flares from the ponseka camp would be very helpful.

i'm trying hard to get a breakthrough BEFORE the POSTAL VOTING DAY. this time a stagerring 400,000+ are going to cast postal votes!!! a large % of them are from the army.

we are aware of the move by some army guys to take leave during the next two weeks and engage in politics. plans are already in place to arrest them for violating the army act. ponseka's link with these guys will be taken care of soon, LEGALLY of course. he is also a rapist and a murderer.

if ponseka tries to teach us "tit4ta", he is taking coal to newcastle!!

And the people who love this beautiful island do not mind even if MR won by 1 vote(though in reality he will win with lot more)

Moshe Dyan said...

making BS charges against ponseka and arresting him only to be released later will be disastrous for the govt.

there is a general election in 3 months!!!

if ponseka is arrested ONLY as a propoganda method at the PE and later released, govt will be screwed at the GE.

a batalanda type of an unprovable allegation will be disastrous.

but if arrested to be eventually proven guilty and punished, then it is very good.

he will spill further beans in custody which will take away ppl's sympathy for him.

at last govt is making some moves to woo more than 20 inactive JVPers. unlike the UNP, JVP leadership CAN be changed by majority rule. await some developments here!!!

Moshe Dyan said...
