Sarath's Guide of Hero to Zero in 21 Days - General commits political suicide

Two days ago, I was writing a post/comment on current political situation. I have been supportive to Mahinda over the time, and have been predicting his victory. Although the two matters of supporting and predicting are independant many took my posts for political propaganda. Nevertheless I promised that I'd write of any trends towards SF, if any were available.

Two days ago, I had facts to write about. It wasn't a wave as big as 2004 Boxing Day Clean Sweep, yet I met few people, notably non-UNPers, who were swaying for good reasons or bad reasons. General did almost nothing but Mahinda's stray dogs have been scoring for general. Let me note down what I observed, exactly until two days ago.

- People hated many stray dogs such as Mervyn/Hadda attacking general. Some patriorts in MR camp were shaky and kinda moving towards general for sympathy.

- Some lesser aware people were fooled by General's bogus campaign. There was a going rumor that "Executive President can abolish the rank Executive President". This is a blatent lie, but UNP lie machines have done their part. Many were deceived. And that covered the biggest flop in General's manifesto. Right or wrong general had scored.

- General's "something more than 13th" did not hit many minds. Many thought that "General will not betray nation" although he said so. Maybe many people wanted to give him a second chance.

- Defection of a top class political mastermind cum power hungry scum, S B Dissanayake. We all know he's like a compass turning towards power. I believe MR did the biggest mistake. For the short time goals he created the biggest risk for him - a Deva Datta among his ranks. Many ppl said that they don't want S B in ruling party, hence General gaining few votes.

- Scum S B calling General a "man like an animal", for which even I felt so disgusted.

- General's posters have been damaged or pictures are deformed. These kind of arrogant and stupid behavior taking every credit away from Mahinda.

I felt that at least few thousands from Mahinda's camp would have crossed.

And just when it was most critical, SF shot in his own butt and threw shit all over the house. First he made his remarkable comment on GR granting shoot-at-will commands against so called surrendering big Pussycats. Then he tried so synthetically and impractically to cover his nakedness leaving some endless questions in the mouths of many foreign parties.

Today, everything as two days ago, makes no sense. I need to rethink on my post. Few facts that arrived in.

- General did his first major betrayal. No matter what bad treatment he received, he is beyond all freedom to issue such news, had it even been true. There is a code of conduct, or ethical bond not to put the men of his previous command in trouble.

- And then he tried recovering, but simply told us that he, then Commander of Army, happened to believe in rumors about his own junior ranks as stated by some stray journalist [who had no guts to write it in public]. This is an utter mess.

- Imagine Gotabhaya Rajapakse ordered this killing of the leaders, bravo, the way to go.  Had we left the trio to get away, today the pussycats will be running under their command, and many 100s of soldiers civilians and pussycat hostages die on every passing day.

- Why should we allow a free passage for some masterminds whom scrificed poor school chrldren as cannon fodder? What assurance do you have that they are not using the white flags to launch a major attack? Why so late for surrender? So wasn't it so great if Gota ordered this, instead of allowing white masters to help pussycats once again?

General just told the whole nation that it was Gota, not him, who held a firm hand against Pussycats, hence winning the war for us. And he lost almost all of his worth in saying so.

And right now, I see a major shake in the patriotic support base of SF. For the first time, most initial supporters are considering their support. Most people who gave him a second chance for "more tahn 13th" are in the mood of deserting him.

It was all lost in one shot. Unless Mahinda's stray dogs score another own goal for General, this will remain the biggest damage by far to his campaign - an almost political suicide. Lots of damage control going, mainly with JVP who has better sense than UNP/Mangala, but little too late. Sunday Leader leads the damage as usual.

It is very non-defence like to discuss the porgress of Presidential capmapign here. But it is all the more defence related when a supposed to be responsible former commander betray his team with true or fake stories like this. As long as Army is taken for political mileage, the matter is defence related, and of the highest interest of national security.

And it is no longer common political mud slinging. What should await the General is a case in court for treason. Whatever you did for nation does not suffice to save you after this level of betrayal.

MD,
You said to Diyasena:
mate, i know your source about nanda menike. now i believe you. such a great man, humble and a gent. we would have won the war a bit earlier if that idiot didn't do BS with such good talent.
Your statement is confusing unless you explain it with following clarifications:
If Nanda Menike’s story is true; how come he is such a great man, humble and gent?
How can we have won the war earlier if that idiot didn’t do BS with such good talent?
What you want to say exactly and whom you are referring to?

Thusitha:

Your observation that SF is a myth created by us is spot on.

Always our criticisms and praise are reflections of our soul and needs.

Some Dharmasokians (I am one too but choose not to support SF)support SF just for the sake of the school name.

Some Ambalangoda people (I am one to but oppose SF) support SF
for paraochial pride and personal benefit(one day they can visit the President SF at his Maha Gedara and get some faours).

So before we praise or criticise, we need to criticise ourselves.

Only then our cirticism or praise can be genuine.

SF has done his part in the military victory. No denying that.

I speculate he might have done some serious damage too. My specualtion is thar his contribution was largely due to his ruthlessness. He simply did not care. Daring as Hitler was.

My opposition to SF comes from the fear that he could be a extremely cruel dictator.

When I listen to him I feel like I am listening to an ice cold corpse.

When you listen to SB( no matter how much you dispise him this does not happen).

My fear came as a response to his association with UNP and JVP. It cannot be logically fathomed his associatio unless we assume that he is after power to satisfy his ego. Then his erratic behaviour.

Extremely dangerous, I feel.

Why take chances?

Featured Scum of the Day
Sarath Fonseka

I never expected this day to arrive. Even today, I write with the greatest hesitation. Fonseka has betrayed the trust of the nation and the army who faithfully served his command. The media conference Fonseka had Sunday further emphasized his treacherous act (Check 3:24 sec). As expected, Fonseka is now trying hard to control the damage to his own political career, not the national security of Sri Lanka. However hard he tries he went on the record twice, once with Sunday Times and then for the second time at this media conference, slandering our forces. Fonseka , without any hesitation says that communications between Secretary of Defence and SLA are not operational secrets.

True to it's meaning, Fonseka has risen back with fleas after laying down with the dogs Ranil, Mangala, Mano, and Rauf. Unfortunately, the fleas he got from the top scum of Sri Lanka infected him with an incurable decease called the top scum decease.

It is my sad duty to announce the untimely death of the war hero General Sarath Fonseka for all practical purposes. It is also my sad duty to announce the birth of the top scum politician Fonseka.

Quoting relevant sections from the Official Secrets Act No. 32 of 1955, he said it was a very serious matter of concern for the country as national security should be regarded as a primary duty. Senior Attorney M.U.M.Ali Sabry showing copies of past issues of the Sunday newspaper under reference said it had continued to espouse the cause of Fonseka for the past many weeks and published stories against the country’s defence establishment."

BTW kalinga and ali sabri WERE FCUKING STRONG UNPers according to my sources!!!

the fallout is clear.

i hope the authorities will go to town on this.

What happens, if RW gives his nomination tomorrow to contest PE? Then SF will have only JVP to go along. Marvellous for so called common candidate’s standing. SF should be prosecuted for defamation and betrayal of GR and high ranking army officers with impeccable records.

Moshe Dyan said...

LP,

i have highlighted that possibility.

govt should prepare the cases against SF and wait till the nominations close. i guess that's around 16 december???

unless the PE candidate dies, no one else can take his place (???).

Lanka Puthra,

We are talking about and ex-military man who confirmed to me (and Moshe) of SF's infidelity with Nanda Menike and the means by which he has looked after his 2nd (?!) family..

Moshe,

What's the legal situation regarding a person charged of a crime running for office? I know someone convicted cannot run? Wouldn't it be more sensible to charge him before nominations on the 17th

Moshe Dyan said...

diyasena,

i could not find any restriction in the amended constitution.

not aware of other law, though.

but what practically happens is when the PE candidate is in and out of court and/or remand his popularity dips.

i find it strange that his buddies are not standing by him!!

may be they know their presence would turn a tragedy into a DISASTER!!

MD/Diyasena,
Convicted or not, an alleged rapist cannot be the executive president of Sri Lanka. If a man can go to such a low level as raping a subordinate female soldier; then he could do anything to get what he wants. People of Sri Lanka should be extremely careful about whom they vote in the next presidential election.

Well, I don't think there is any legal barrier there. Accusations.. out of question. Even proved.. I don't think that will prevent legally any one becoming president.

And only (I guess 20%) of voters may consider many aspects of candidates before they vote. Others are pre-determined.

A lot of (non-UNP/JVP) fans of SF seem to be shaken..Spoken to a few who said they are not going to vote this time..However the MR camp seems to be a bit lackadaisical in driving the advantage home.. Are they waiting for a Nekatha or something?

Moshe Dyan said...

ninja, LP, diyasena,

true.

it is strange that a president can be expelled from post over moral misconduct (plus a few more criteria) but no restriction on presidential hopefuls. moral misconduct includes consensual extra marital sex in the SL context.

but no right thinking man/woman would want either tiger woods or borat's father to be the executive president.

SF cannot do a bill clinton partly due to the gravity of his acts, his tendancy not to give in and the society's different approach.

anyway the govt is yet to dig those up following KTR's finds.

interestingly danuna had altered some legal documents on the 16 november following our discussion a day b4.

hi danuna!! (if you are around)

Swarnajith Udana said...

You have accurately recognised rape is not about sex. It is about getting sadistic satisfaction over empowering an innocent victim enjoying the flight of the innocent woman to the satisfaction of an altered, vicious and devilish ego.

If the rape accusation is correct it must be brought to the front.

Moshe Dyan said...

did MR have any sexual adventures??? he married at 35+. no way you can survive for 35+ years on self sex alone!!!

i won't be surprised if mongal comes with a woman/man claiming that MR screwed her/him in 1975.

something that i noticed, the SF camp, UNP, JVP, TNA, etc. never blamed MR (seriously) for corruption and other offences like abusing power, screwing around. he is only blamed for nepotism and tolerating others' wrongs.

blaming BR, GR, NR, CR is not blaming MR.

this was the case even b4. the hambantota case was not used extensively and anyway it was not corruption.

MR seems to have some core support even from his enemies. this WILL change as the losers become more and more desperate.

Does it matter what sex Sarath Fonseka had? If doesn’t affect the country. Look at our friends who use colourful language. Do we call them anti Sri Lankan?
We know Sarath is not a good PR guy. So what? It doesn’t mean he is a bad man.
He is straightforward because he doesn’t like to hide anything. If you make a prepared speech you are lying. We know Sarath is not in good terms with Gota. Without thinking of consequences Sarath blamed Gota. It went wrong. Isn’t Sarath still the same man who won the war?
Look at the good side. He raised two beautiful daughters as a good father he educated them. If he was a bad man how can he have good children?
People say bad things about Danuna. What crime he did? He sold good quality things. He didn’t take money illegally. He is a poor boy of a former army guy. Can’t they live happily doing business without taking 10% of all contracts?
Sarath resigned from the job after the war is over. Gota is still in the job. War is over.

He did not cross to the opposition at the budget crisis.

If he and others did then Government could have fallen and war would have been stopped and then Still there is LTTE.

(Oh I forgot in the case that kudu Gamunu (not Dutu Gamunu had crossed to the other side then the kudu Gamunu would have been hailed as the purest of purest politician.)

Therefor Mervin did a very good job to win the war by not crossing to the other side.

Does it matter what a thug or rapist he is? He should be our god?

Wake up Swarnajith, this is a very bad dream.

So what's the change in replacing the Rajapaksha family and Company, with the Fonseka/Thilakarathne.. Family and Company...Mervin is and idiot and does not have PR skills either, but he is an irrelevant deputy minister..Imagine Mervin Silva as president..

And same way I know many of my UNP friends believe (adahanwa) fony as another military genius, extra ordinary super powerful savior. we have a maniac!!

SF will not take medication. once again its his ego that is his downfall.

its the same thing for vezapillai. he refused to run away in time and that's why we could trap him and his crowd and kill them. if VP didn't build such a big ego over the years, it would have been very difficult to get them all.

Priyashantha,

What Fonseka told Sunday Leader was reconfirmed by him as shown in Derana news clip. Otherwise Fonseka will be calling Sunday Leader article is a gross miinterpretation. Instead of correcting his mistake, he reaffirmed what he said earlier. Fonseka was very clear about his stance until that point.

By dragging Shavendra Silva, he dragged the entire army in to bogus war crime charges. Als, he acted the baby saying that he was not a par of it. This is an act of absolute betrayal deserves only a speedy trial and revocation of civil rights.

We do not need speedy trial or revocation of civil rights now. SF will divide even UNP, Tamil and Muslim votes. As the election day get closer SF’s popularity will go down to zero. Trend is set downward firmly and he can only accelerate it further.

He is just there to confirm MR’s presidency for another six years. Ranil and JVP will be the biggest losers in this election as well as the next GE also.

He should be prosecuted for his treacherous act of betrayal and defamation only after the election. He may even go to the prison, if MR and GR handle the case well under the prevention of terrorism act.

it says SL was known as sinhala from time immemorial.

IF TRUE, it means what SF said was true, sinhala belongs to the sinhalas. no one else.

Moshe,

What the Kazuthais fail to say is why doesnt a single tamizh stone inscription appear in SL until 8th century AD, whilst the Prakrit pali ones were there from BC times..Does this mean Tamizh evolved from the Aryan Prakrit as well..

Good article on General's stupid comment [Divaina]

Moshe Dyan said...

diyasena,

although mixed later, sinhala and tamil have completely different origins.

sinhalas predominantly come from KAMBOJAS.

vijaya is from a kamboja clan and pre-vijaya history clearly says a MASSIVE kamboja kingdom was there in rohana of SL b4 vijaya's arrival.

Moshe Dyan said...

1.On the other hand, the Kambojas were such a tribe which was known to be a Sanskrit/Pali speaking people and to have been a Vedic People at certain phase of Indian History.

2. The Kambojas were shaven-headed (wearing short hair like Yavana and Saka people, by comparison to rest of the Indian people) by customs: Thus they had SOCIAL CUSTOMS exactly similar to those of the ancestors of the Sinhalese as described by traditions (legendary Vijay and party).

3. The Kambojas are historically famed to observe Republic system of governance (Kautalya Arathsastra on forms of Government IHQ., XIV-2, 1938, p 370; Hindu Polity by Dr K. P. Jayswal; Kautylaya Arathsastra 11/1/4; cf Kambojana cha ye ganah: MBH 7/91/39, also cf MBH 7/112/43-44, and 12/107/21). Says one commentator The term Sangha applied by Kautalya to Saurashtra, Kamboja and some other clans of Punjab, it seems, corresponds to the non-monarchical self-governing States . This fact about Sangha/Ganas/Republics/Coroporations etc matches very well with the system of governance of the ancient Sinhalese as is proved/evidenced by the ancient Sinhalese inscriptions themselves. Thus the governing constitution of the Kambojas and that of the ancestors of the Sinhalese was identical.

4. As an ethnic group, the Kambojas find very prominent mention in the ancient and medieval epigraphic inscriptions of Sri Lanka, while there is no mention of term Sinhala itself in any of these inscriptions. Another term that occurs most after Kaboja is Daemeda (Dravida or Tamil) which has occurred in three inscriptions. Kaboja/Kamboja has occurred in 7 (including two of medieval era), Milaka(=mlechchas) occurs in two. Muridi (=Murinda=Saka??.. according to some scholars), Merya (=Maurya) and Jhavaka, each in one. Thus we find that the Kamboja find most prominent and predominant mention in these Epigraphic inscriptions of Sri Lanka. This single fact again qualifies the Kambojas and only the Kambojas as the most probable candidates for a claim as Sinhalas ancestors.

5. The Kambojas have used titles like Gamik, Paramukh etc (both in royal and mercantile context) with their names in several Sinhalese inscriptions. This matches with titles used in numerous other ancient Sinhala inscriptions where no ethnicity of the donor princes, princesses and kings has specifically been mentioned. This again puts the Kambojas in the fore front as the ancestors of the modern Sinhalas.

6. North-West Kamboja peoples Republican terminology like Gota (=goshata, i.e implying Sangha, corporation or Shreni ), Puga (=Guilds, i.e mahapugyana= Grand Corporation or Guilds ) has been amply used in all Sri Lankan epigraphic inscriptions. (cf Kamboja-Saurashtra Kasatrya-Shrenadhyo-Varta-Sastropajivini: Kautalyas Arathsastra 11/1/4).

7. Numerous (but not all clans) of Kamboja people had adopted Buddhism during the times of Buddha and later during the times of Asoka. We find this confirmation from Sasanvamsa (P.T.S. p 49) as well as from Asokas Rock Edicts no V and XIII. The ancient Sinhalese were also decidedly a Buddhist people. This fits the Kambojas very well to prominently claim the ancestorage of the Sinhala people.

Moshe Dyan said...

8. The Kambojas were (and still are) a patriarchal society. In MBH, Kamboja king Sudaksina Kamboj has been mentioned as Kambojraj-putra, Similarly the similar titles are given to prince Parpakshs Kaamboj, the younger brother of Sudakasan Kamboj. The Kamboja king Chander Varman Kamboj has also been described as Kambojrajaputra. The Irda Tamra Patra of Bengal further substantiates this fact where the Kamboja kingship passes from the father to his son in a series of ancestral inheritance. Also we know that the Sinhalas are also known to be a patriarchical society. Another plus for Kambojas.

9. As already stated, there is mention of a place name Tavarikia in Sri Lanka (as found from an Epigraphic inscription at a place called Tonhigalla), which is undoubtedly the corrupted form of Sanskrit Davarka (ref History and Geography of Ancient India by Dr B. C. Law, p 53, Kamboja People and the country by Dr Jya Lal p 353). This name Davarka which is mentioned in the Pathu Vathu Commentary of Khidaka Nikayahas ..) been identified as the Capital or an important city of Kamboja (Dr Rys David, Dr Aiyanger, Dr Banerjee, ref: Pali Jataka Khudak Nikaya, Pethuvathu Commentary etc) . This is another factor which makes the Kambojas a better candidate to claim to be the ancestors of Sinhalas.

10. Kamboja country had a geographical place name Sinhpura located very contiguous to its boundaries some where, as is evidenced by MBH, 2/27/20.

Tat Sinhapuram ramyam chitrayuvdhsurakhastim:
Pradhamad balmasthaya pakshasanirahavey
Grahitvatu balam saram phalgun:pandunandan
Dardan saha KAMBOJAIH rajayat pakshasani
Lohan PARAM KAMBOJAN Nrishkanutranpi
Sahastastan mahadaaj vayajyat pakshasani (MBH 2/27/20-25)

This fact is further supported by Chinese traveler Hieun Tsang who also mentions a Sinhpura in NW India, 117 mile SE of Taxilla, near the ancient Kamboja country (ref: Buddhist Records of Western world, Vol I, pp143, 46). We also find some epigraphic inscriptions containing the terms Sinhapura, inscribed on a Kalsa found in a Buddhist Stupa near Taxila (Gandhara), as also name Sinhal mentioned in another inscription (Stein Konow, Khroshti inscriptions pp 87, 110) which has also been found near Taxila (Gandhara), in East Afghanistan. As Gandhara and Kamboja were adjoining countries (Yona-Kamboja-Gandharama: ref Asoka Rock edict V, also ref MBH XII,207,43; Anguttara N., P.T.S. I, 2134, 252,261 etc), therefore, it can be safely concluded that this Sinhpura was also contiguous to Kamboja. In Chetan Jataka also we find a mention of Sinhapura somewhere in Western India (Jataka Tr III 275).

11. Per Mahavamsa, legendary Vijay and his entire entourage had left Sinhpura for exile in a half shaven-headed form. Vijay had one brother who was left behind in Sinhpura. His this brother later is said to have married a princess from Madara desha. This Madara desha has been undoubtedly located in NW India, in Punjab, between Ravi and Chenab rivers (Madradesha) as well as also above and towards Kashmir (Uttara Madradesha). In the Vamsa Br. (1.18) of SamVeda, a Kamboja sage Aupanyava Kamboj is mentioned. He is described by numerous scholars as the son of Kamboja sage Upamanu (Rig Veda I, 102, 9). Kamboja Upamanyava received his education from sage Madragara, who belonged to Madradesha. Based on this fact of Vamsa Br (1.18) of the Sam Veda, Dr Zimmer says that the Kambojas and Madras were very much neighborly tribes in extreme north or Uttrapatha (Also ref: Some Kasatrya Tribes of ancient India by Dr B. C. Law p 231; History and Culture of Indian people, Vedic Age, Vol I by Dr R. C. Majumdar, Dr A. D. Pusalkar, page 357-358; Problems of Ancient India 2000, p 224, by K. D. Sethna., Vedic Index Vol I by Dr AA, Mcdonald and Dr A. B. Keith). This above again fixes the Sinhpura somewhere in NW. It also proves that the predecessors of Sinhalese were also ruling some where in NW India as opposed to East India/Bengal as has been supposed by some scholars

Moshe Dyan said...

12. Several of the NW Kamboja tribes had migrated to Malva/Gujrat/Saurashtra as well as to Punjab/UP area during 2nd c AD as we have stated above. To add to further probabilities, we have place name Sinhore in Kathiawar which name also stands mentioned historically as SINPURA in the inscriptions of King Dhruva Sena of Valabhi , Gujrat (ref EI., XVII., p 110). According to Mahavamsa, the city of Sinhapura from which Vijay and Co. started their journey for Sri Lanka was located in some Lata country. The Lata in fact was a Gujrati region now identified with area around Daman etc. This Lat is now generally identified as a part of modern Kathiawar region and thus the above said Sinhore=Sinhpura can be safely identified and accepted as SINHPURA of the Sinhalese. [And we also know that Lata and Latey (plural) is a well known Kamboja sub caste till this day]

13. And we have also shown above that the migrant Kambojas had settled in this Kathiawar/Saurashtra area in large numbers after 2nd c BC, when many of their tribes had joined mass migration of the Saka tribes towards South-west India (from their original homes) under pressure from great Yuches. And undoubtedly, the name Kambhey in Kathiawar/Gujrat was given to this place by these migrant Kambojas from Afghanistan, as has rightly been observed by several scholars on Indology. Besides this, they also lent their name to several other place names, the corrupted forms of which we still find in place names like Khamboj, Kamboi, Khambavat, Gambhu, Kamba-rivaji etc. Also we find Kambhi caste in Kathiawar and Kumbhi caste in adjoining region of Maharashtra which are described by scholars as the descendents of the migrant Kambojas.

14. Many historians have linked the Kambojas with Gujrat as stated in my previous notings. The Western Ksahatrapas, especially the Kshaharata Strapas of Gujrat/Malva who had ruled this area for long time after AD era, are often connected with the Kambojas (ref: Dr T. L. Shah, Ancient India, Vol III, pp 94, 124, Kamboja People and the Country 1982 p 309). These Kashatrapas had ruled Gujrat for about 300 years after AD era.

15. Numerous sub-castes of the Kamboh or Kamboj people from modern Punjab, Haryana and UP very well match with those of people living in the Kathiawar, and adjoining regions of Maharashtra, (e.g Vinayak, Patnayak, Gandhi, Dhote, Sarang, Soi, Chandana, Nagpal, Chandi , Kaura, Judge etc to name only a few in the long list). There are also sub-castes like Kamboty/Khamboty, Khambodjia etc which remind us of their ancestral lineage possibly traceable to the ancient Kamboja tribes of Afghanistan/Central Asia. Anyhow, this aspect definitely needs further research to reach any final conclusions.

Moshe Dyan said...

16. The ancient legendary Vijay and his entourage are traditionally associated with a place name called LAL or LAT. The migrant Kambojas were also associated with this place in Gujrat when they had spread and occupied Gujrat/Malva area, along with the Sakas, after 2nd c BC. [Again note that Lata is a well known sub-caste of the Kambojas till this day]

17. Further more, there is also said to be a place name called Hingura about 40 miles east from the apex of delta of Sindhu, near Gujrat. (ref: Cunningham , Ancient Geography, of India, map facing p 248). This Hingura could also be a candidate for the ancient Sinhpura of the Sinhalese.

18. It is also stated that based on some traditions, Hieun Stang has written that , the ship in which the sister of Vijay was exiled finally reached Persia. Her descendents founded a kingdom there which came to be known as Istri Rajya. (Mehladvipa or Womans kingdom). Similar to this tradition, there is said to be a tradition in Sri Lanka itself which states that the ship in which Vijays queens and his followers rode, went to a Mehladvipa or Istri Rajya. Marco Polo also records a Mehla Dvipa and a Purushdvipa, some where in Western Asia in his travelography. From these descriptions also, it can be gathered that the predecessors of Sinhalese must have been connected with the western coasts of India and must have reached Sri Lanka by west coast and not by east coast of India. Thus they were from NW India rather than from the eastern India as some people believe.

(19) Junagad area of Gujarat has been famous for its lion population since ancient times. As the Kambojas are shown to have been associated with this Junagad as is also evidenced from Ashikas Rock Edicts found in Junagad/Gujarat, to all probability, the Kambojas had earned the nickname Sinhala because of their association with this territory anciently known for its Sinha or Lion population. And over the time, the Kambojas of Junagad/Saurashtra probably came to be addressed more as Sinhala s than Kambojas, though, they seem not to have dropped off the their Kamboja ethnic identity all to gather. And probably, they finally gave their this Sinhala nickname to the ancient Sri Lankan Island.

Moshe Dyan said...

20. It is also true that the name for a river is Ganga in Sinhala language. Based on this fact, some writers state that Sinhala people could HAVE COME from East India. And they also identify Rad of Bengal with Vijays Lat. These writers claim that Vijay and his entourage had carried with them this name Ganga of their sacred River in east India, and had used it indiscriminately for every river in Sinhala, out of respect. But then, see below, how the opponents to this theory try to neutralize this argument:

21. The Sinhalese name for RICE is Goyam (=Godhum in Sanskrit, Gehun in Hindi). In the NW Indian terminology, this name is reserved for WHEAT. The rice in the Sinhala was new to these new immigrants from NW, who were more used to, and familiar with the term Goyam (or Gehun or Godhum) for their main dietary stuff. So they indiscriminately started using the term goyam (=godhum) for rice also which they had been using for wheat before in NW. Based on this fact, it can thus be argued that the Sinhalese were from NW region where rice was not common diet and they had started using the word Goyam for rice, which term they had brought from NW India.

22. Language-wise, there are two schools: Based on linguistic studies, one school advances arguments that the modern language of Sinhalas has more closer similarities with their sister Aryan languages from eastern India ( ref: Mohamad Sahidula). But equally forceful arguments are advanced by eminent scholars like Geiger (who is regarded as an exceptional authority on Sinhala language) that modern Sinhalese language is more akin to NW Indo Aryan languages than the eastern Indian ones. (ref: A Grammer of the Simhalese language, pp. vii-xiiGeiger). Thus we see that linguistically, we are stuck dead to prove whether the Sinhalese people originally came from EAST or from NW of India.

23. The comparative study of written language of the Sinhalese with the written languages used for Asokas inscriptions found at Girnar (Kathiawar, West India) , Mansehra (Afganistan) and Shahbazgarhi (NWPF) in NW India and the Dhauli in Bhubneshwara (in Orissa, East India) brings out some characteristics and attributes which point towards the fact the language of the Sinhalese inscriptions has some phonetical characteristics which are different from the Asokan language in Dhauli/Bhubneshwara (Orissa, East India) but resemble better the language of inscriptions at Girnar (Kathiawar West India) and the Shahbazgarhi and Mansehra in NW India. This fact should point to the NW, rather than the East Indian origin of the Sinhalese.

24. According to Mahavamsa, the legendary Vijay and his entourage had left Lal country and , Sinhpura city for exile and had proceeded towards Sri Lanka. On his way he passed through Sauparka and Bhrukachacha ports which come only along the west coast and not on the east coast of India. Some historians erroneously tried to identify this Lal with modern Rod and Sinhpura with modern Singhur in East Bengal. Had Vijay and his entourage (the legendary ancestors of the Sinhalas) been from east India and had he started his exile from Hinghur/Rod of East Bengal, he could never have come across the above two sea ports (Sauparka and Brigukachcha) which are located only on the west coast of India (in Gujrat/Maharashtra). This single fact belies the claim of those historians who claim Vijay and his entourage as belonging to East India (Rod region and modern Singhur). Compared to this, We have a Lat (=Lal) and Sinore (=Sinhpur) in Gujrat also. Based on all the numerous facts and factoids stated above, the modern historians now are convinced about the NW origin of the ancestors of the Sinhalas. And, further, more and more evidence is gathering to show that it were the NW Kambojas who were in fact the ancient Sinhalas and it were these people who had given Sri Lanka its ancient name. (With due gratitude to Dr Jiya Lal Kamboj).

b4 vijaya came there were yaksha, naga, deva.

who were they???

yaksha
The Yaksas were a tribe living in the area surrounding the Kailasa range of the Himalayas. Their king, Vaisravana or Kuvera, was a worshipper of Siva whose abode is thought to be Kailasa.

According to Ramayan Kubera established or rebuilt the kingdom of Lanka (now know as Srilanka) and habitated with Yaksa people. Later on Kuber's step brother Ravana (they had same father Vishrava) took over Sri Lanka, upon their father's request Kuber moved to the region near Kailasa mountain in Himalayas.

naga
Nagas were a group of people spread throughout India during the period of the epic Mahabharata. The demi-god tribe called Suparnas (in which Garuda belonged) were arch-rivals of the Nagas. However, the Nagas near Kashmir seems to be the original abode of all of them. Places like Anantnag attests this theory.

Naga Ananta (also known as Sesha and Adi-Sesha) was the first among all the Nagas. He became an ascetic.
The second Naga chief Vasuki had the kingdom near Kailasa (hence the connection of Vasuki with lord Siva).
The third chief Takshaka, in Takshasila both not far from Anantnag. Takshashila is named after Taksh, son of Bharat and nephew to Ram. His brother Pushkar founded Pushkalvati modern Peshawar, they were not nagas. Bharat defeated Gandharvas who had killed his uncle and his sons established their rule over Gandharva kingdoms, Gandhara. Takshaka lost his kingdom of Khandava and may have taken Gandhara for Nagas post Mahabharata but finally lost it to Janamjeya.
The kingdoms of other Nagas like Karkotaka and Airavata (near Iravati River (Ravi, one among the five rivers of Punjab) were also not far away.
The Kingdom of Aryaka was on Ganges. His greatgrandchildren included Krishna and Pandavas.

deva
Indo-Iranian *devá- descends from the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) word, *deiwos, originally an adjective meaning "celestial" or "shining", which is a PIE (not synchronic Sanskrit) vrddhi derivative from the root *diw meaning "to shine", especially as the daylit sky. The feminine form of PIE *deiwos is PIE *deiwih2, which descends into Indic languages as devi, in that context meaning "goddess".

We have not misquoted General Fonseka at any stage, Frederica Janszof Sunday Leader told Ada Derana a short while ago. She added that the General himself spoke to her before yesterday’s press conference and conveyed that the story was absolutely right.

However Ms. Janz says that the General had been worried the political fallout that resulted from the story and had wanted her to clarify certain matters further.

And he had reiterated that no LTTE leaders had attempted to surrender at the stated times and that he was prepared to take the full responsibility of whatever incidents that took place at the final stages of the war.

This war crime concept applies only to us small fry in the third world, while the super powers flaunt them like nothing.

This effectively means that a third world country cannot win an armed struggle against the state. Thus these articles should be changed accordingly and time has come for Sri Lanka and other opressed countries to challenge them.

SF gives a NIXONIAN explanation; Says "he mis-spoke himself"

........
Sri Lanka ex-General u-turns, says he accepts responsibility for military operations

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 14, Colombo: Sri Lanka's presidential candidate former military chief General Sarath Fonseka reversing his accusations said he takes full responsibility for the military operations of the Army and his Sunday's statements were misinterpreted by the media.

Addressing media the ex-military chief said the Army has never committed any war crimes and has acted according to international of humanitarian laws. As the then Sri Lanka Army Commander, he takes full responsibility for all the military operations, he said.

In an interview to the Sunday Leader newspaper, the former commander accused the Secretary of Defence of ordering to kill the surrendering LTTE leaders and Commander of the 58 Division, then Brigadier, now Major General Shavendra Silva of carrying out the orders.

General Fonseka has explained to the Sunday Leader how three senior LTTE leaders, Pulidevan, Nadesan and Romesh who were trying to surrender with raised white flags to the security forces were instead shot dead by Major General Silva's troops.

In the interview General Fonseka said he later learnt about what exactly had taken place from the embedded journalists in Major General Silva's brigade command.

According to the General Fonseka, the journalists heard the telephone call received by the Major General Silva the Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa ordering him not to accommodate any LTTE surrenders but to simply go ahead and kill them.

"These journalists later told me what exactly took place," Fonseka has told the newspaper.

However, today at the media briefing the ex-General said the media that interviewed him misinterpreted his statement.

"As far as I know there were nobody with white flags or raised hands who tried to surrender on the night of May 17, 18 or 19. My order to the troops was to kill all terrorists. And they did that. Only the next day they were able to identify the bodies of terrorist leaders like Pulidevan, Nadesan among the bodies of those killed. There was no human rights violation or any illegal killings. If there are accusations, I am prepared to answer them in any court or tribunal on behalf of the troops," Sarath Fonseka said.

Following the Sunday Leader interview, General Fonseka came under severe criticism from all sectors of the country and from Sri Lankan expatriates for betraying his former subordinates and the country and playing into the hands of international forces.

The government vehemently denied his allegations and even hinted that they would pursue legal action for maliciously tarnishing the image of the country.

Sri Lanka will NEED a strong defence very far into the FUTURE to confront and defeat not only TERRORIST threats, but also various FOREIGN ENEMY STATES.

Our LACK OF PREPAREDNESS to FIGHT led to a 30 year war and nearly to the LOSS OF OUR SOVEREIGNITY and EXISTENCE as ONE NATION.

If we FORGET that, we will be condemned to suffer the SAME OR WORSE calamities.

We need ALL OF OUR PATRIOTIC MILITARY LEADERS to prepare the defenses of the Nation to confront those future threats. That Includes Gothabhaya Rajapaksa; too bad Sarath Fonseka opted out of that role.

We MUST,

Remember the Cowardly CFA!

Remember the Debacle at Mulaitivu!

Remember the Fall of Alimankada!

and NEVER let such calamities befall the Motherland AGAIN IN OUR TIME!

Sam Perera said...

SU,

I too have the same question. Based on the bottom paragraph of Tamilnet report as copied below, this could be just posturing to magnify the effects of Fonseka betrayal.

Meanwhile, TAG spokesperson when contacted by TamilNet said, "While we have published the summary of the findings, ISF is due to provide TAG a detailed technical report detailing the analysis carried out."

Moshe Dyan said...

sam,

that's not all.

GOSL's response to the US possible war crimes report is due in exactly 2 weeks!!!

SF made the statement DELIBERATELY to over shadow the GOSL's denial of war crimes.

as i said b4, SF was perfectly at ease in the interview with sunday leader which is now a pro-SF newspaper. there was NO PROVOCATION whatsoever for SF to throw tantrums.

which means only one thing. he acted his part in a master plan.

Moshe Dyan said...

even vezapillai loved his children. that does not qualify him to be a good man.

col. muthalif neglected his daughter bcos he was busy killing tigers and fcuking them. that does not make him a bad man.

what matters is to which country are you aligned to AT PRESENT, SL, TE or US???

that is the question to answer. anyway i don't expect an answer from you. even those who supported SF b4 like hemantha, ninja, sam have realised this.

Even though I rank Fonseka as the top scum now, I believed that his contribution to overall battle strategy was enormous. In the past he was the symbol of patriotism. I can't forget the fact that he lead the effort to rescue soldiers trapped in Jaffna Fort those days. Also, he was the one who stood on the way of not removing the Palaly HSZ. Unfortunately, he just comitted the most menial act a Sri Lankan can commit, let alone a commander of the army. With his latest stunt, now I believe that he is a serious threat to national security of Sri Lanka.

Expect more... GSL did hard work to nullify war crime BS attacks in international front and was kind of successful.. for GSP+, good renewed relationship with US etc and now GSL have to start from zero again...

Sam:

This coincidence may have been pre-designed.

Also it could be that LTTE forces and International agencies are trying to fish in troubled water.

In either case it points in the direction that these events may not be pure coincidences.

At this juncture people supports SF are real opportunists or they have an agenda against Sri Lankan people.

Yes corruption is there.

Yes Mervin is there.

For each of these negative factors there are multi-fold of the same or worse in the other side. These negatives of the other side are at the moment not high lightened just for the reason that they are not in power. Yes, MR is a shrewd politician. Otherwise he could not have survived treachery of the opposition.

But there is clearly something the other side does not have and MR has.

MR is the only political leader in recent times who seems to care about Sri Lanka. He seems to concentrate in development in rural level also not just in Colombo Level.

He is the only leader steadfastly stood up to the LTTE and its agents in the midst of extremely difficult circumstances. It was a Houdini Act.

At the moment, I do not see anybody who can approximate his credibility.

UNP/JVP has lost credibility big time and it is a crime against you and me and all our Sri Lankans not against MR.

Moshe Dyan said...

ninja, sam,

can you see CHANDRIKA behind ALL SF supporters???

it is fcuking clear. sarath nanda silva was CBK's man too; a strong one. we have to expect some strong CBK arse lickers in the govt to join SF soon.

what she wants is to use SF to defeat SLFP and then convince the SLFP fellows to reappoint CBK or SF as the party leader. remember SF has not got the UNP or JVP party membership. UNP and JVP leaders know that SF is NOT a threat to their leadership.

if the war crimes BS go aganst MR, BR and GR, there are no leaders left in the SLFP!!!! that is a bonus for CBK.

i propose that we eliminate CBK NOW. no one will give a flying fart about her.

there is no time to colonize these districts b4 the PE. so we should block the voters.

they are not planning to vote for SF or MR. instead they plan to vote for rahu (bahu) and that TNA toilet.

for them it is not a PE but a referendum on tamil elam.

in "tamil elam" the rahu, TNA combine (who say the same thing - tamil elam) will win. although they will lose island wide.

this is what miliband is after.

surprisingly this sivajilingam bugger said in the LAST PUNNAKU TAMIL that he will force a referendum in the NE. this is it.

govt should get the displaced muslims' vote counted in JAFFNA, NOT IN PUTTLAM.

/Even though I rank Fonseka as the top scum now, I believed that his contribution to overall battle strategy was enormous./

Overall battle strategy

1. Increased manpower

This is done by GSL not by SLA. i.e. Bu MR/GR/ UPFA not by fonz. The main problem SLA had before 2005 was not enough troops. If they had 200,000 army even jayasikuru could walk to EPS under AR. The reason youth didn't join SLA was not about SLA commanders but because of unclear CBK/mongal political strategy. CBK/ mongal policy was 'there is some special problem for tamils, and they want to solve it by giving a package/ federal, they want to have peace talks with LTTE and negotiate..' Further, state itself was in anti-war theme and praising it.. Then for WTF youth join for army?

Its only MR who clearly stated in public that NO for terrorism, NO negotiations or surrender, war will be fought until last tiger.. Once people got trust on new leader they joined forces and MR did his job to pay salaries to increased recruits by whatever financing ways..

2. Coordination

Its GR who coordinated SLA, SLAF, SLN, STF and CDF. Specially as fony doesn't talk to WK, GR must get extra credit for this part. Whenever there was no coordination (Muhamale) fonny proved what a failure he is.

3. Continuous hammering

SLA fought 24/7 from MA to NKL. Credit should go to troops on the ground who did their duty without sleep, without food, with mosquitos and jonnys, sacrificing their lives. Fony had to do just his regular duty as the commander nothing more. However, this continuous fighting was possible only because MR didn't order to stop fighting or agree to any CFAs or negotiations despite entire west with US pressurizing. Pressure was on political leaders not on military leaders. Full credit should go to MR.

4. Destroying LTTE supplies

This was done totally by SLN in high seas. Fony can claim no credit.

5. Continuous supply for SLDF

MR made sure SLDF get whatever weapons and ammo they need on time. Is upto MRGR to find suppliers and finances and they did it despite all the blockades from fonzi's new friends.

6. More offensive/ defensive division

This is stranded defence theories. Only issue is having troops. Once you have numbers its just a administrative work to raise these divisions.

7. Opening more offensive fronts

This is again a result of having more troops. If you have troops as you need any commander will do this.

8. Small team tactics

I am not sure this is fony's invention or not, I guess not. I think SF teams any way used such tactics.

9. Appointing right people, promotion based on battlefield performance instead of seniority, no corruption policy

Fony was successful convincing people he made such changes. But these things are argued now. 'Bana earning comis', his treatment for ParakramaP, PrasannaS and SamanthS raise questions.

10. Publicity

Fony used media and said 'we will win war'. This was not done by earlier commanders. However, after the political leadership clearly declared their policy repeating and supporting the same was done by previous commanders as well.

# I truly believe if GR chose any other senior officer in SLA he too capable, deliver and could win the war.

* * * * * * * * * ** * * ** * * * *

/I can't forget the fact that he lead the effort to rescue soldiers trapped in Jaffna Fort those days. Also, he was the one who stood on the way of not removing the Palaly HSZ./

Karuna also did a great job for LTTE before he defected. In fact, very much greater than Fony did for SL. But after his defection he was a traitor for all tamil eelaam supporters. Our di-ass-pora monkeys (even so called 'neutral' monkeys like Navindran, Jay) had no issue attacking him. They showed how strong is their desire for tamil peelaam and it goes beyond personal issues.

OTOH, there are a lot of such heroes in SLA who did so many heroic things for SL.

Moshe Dyan said...

miliband's referndum.

my forecast.

TAMIL ELAM - YES - BAHU + SIVAJI
TAMIL ELAM - NO - ALL OTHERS' VOTES

jaffna - YES
vanni - YES (can be turned to a NO)
batti - YES (can be turned to a NO)
trinco - NO
ampara - NO

jaffna CANNOT be turned to a NO. so the next best thing is to show that there is a DIVISION. only a very few tamils in jaffna will vote for MR-SF. we should count displaced muslims vote in jaffna. that will tell miliband, there is no walkover even in jaffna.

MD

Good point. If west wants to eliminate MR/GR via war crimes or other means they will also replace SLFP leadership with their puppets. CBK, SNS, SF are all good puppets. CBK has proven track record, SF just proved his loyalty and SNS is yet to do it.

Not sure how SLFP leaders will react to inserting SF or SNS or return of CBK in such case. I think SB factor will be critical in such a move.

It is obvious and expected a few switching to UNP. There are a lot of ministers who are CBK's men, appointed by her in UPFA and they naturally expect MR not giving nominations for next term so jumping will happen whatever the time UNP wants.

Anonymous said...

/In the past he was the symbol of patriotism./

I guess the reason was people wanted a 'hero' and a non-political, military hero rather than a politician so he was the choice. GR himself stayed in a corner, being the true humble man he is (and possibly watching this monkey dance.)

In the future he will be the symbol of a traitor.

We cannot say the above with a certainty. There are free thinking Tamils who are fed up with racial politics and separatist movement. I think fair number of Tamils will vote for MR just because of freedom they are enjoying without iron hand of VP wesaballa.

Racists will be there too. If MR can get 30% of votes from north/east; it will be good show of the direction SLG is moving. If that is the case TNA can be brushed aside easily.

Adding another note for SamP:

Once Fony made the appointments its the ground commanders did the job. You can contrast this with 80/90s.

Then: Commander HamiltonW
Now: Commander SarathF

Then: Heroes - ground commanders
1. DenzilK
2. WijayaW
3. LakiA
4. JanakaP

Now: Heroes - ground commanders

SS, JD, PS, KG, NU,

Difference is HamiltonW had no intention doing politics, had no foul mouth so didn't manipulate media while Fonzy did so.

Moshe Dyan said...

lankaputhra,

the question is not tamil votes.

the question is TAMIL VOTES IN THE NORTH-EAST.

jaffna, vanni and batti are the only tamil majority districts of the NE.

so for outsiders what matters is their performance plus a reasonable support for the racists (including bahu) in trinco and ampara (colonized districts).

an OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of tamils in the north-east still vote for racists. they ALWAYS did.

e.g.
TAMIL national alliance
TAMIL elamakkal viduthalai pulikkal
TAMIL united liberation front

it is not their fault. they have got accustomed to live in a tamil nadu like tamil only society.

similarly in tamil nadu only you get similar racism.

e.g.
anna DRAVIDA munetra kazagam
all india anna DRAVIDA munetra kazagam

(no indira congress, no BJP)

the turnout will also be closely monitored. with sivajilingam and bahu (PRO-TAMIL ELAM) in the fray the turnout will be THE HIGHEST AFTER 1983.

at the 1982 election MOST tamils in the north-east voted for pro-tamil elam candidate.

new LTTE around the world are holding referenda (norway, france) in support of seperation. next will be SL. since SL will not hold a referndum, the PE will be interpreted as such.

"tamils in the northeast approved the seperation policy at the latest SL election." will be their interpretation.

Moshe Dyan said...

this goes well with the new concept, SELF DETERMINATION.

to initiate a process of self-determination you only need to show that a certain ethnic group in a certain region want seperation. how they manifest it is not material.

the ONLY way to block it is by showing there are substantial number of ppl who think otherwise in the SAME REGION.

however this is very temporary.

the ONLY permanant solution is multi ethnic colonization of the north. that will permanantly bust the self determination concept.

Moshe Dyan said...

ninja,

there two more faces to it.

FACE 1
in the past, POPULAR commanders were DELIBERATELY not appointed to the post of army commander.

politicians were wary of the POSSIBLE THREAT to their popularity.

e.g.
denzil
janaka
wijaya
lucky
sarath f (CBK time)

FACE 2

in the past politicians ensured credit stays with THEM CLOSELY.

e.g.
GENERAL ranjan wijeratna (bugger never was in the army!!!!)

GENERAL anuruddha ratwatte

weeratunga (JR's nephew who was sent to jaffna to FINISH the LTTE in 1979!!!!) there were more competent guys but JR feared credit will leave him.

these jokers were thinking of credit even before winning the war!!

Any solutions? Maybe some remaining "LTTE" may put up posters with death threats for whoever votes.

Moshe Dyan said...

tata,

in 2005 EPDP and TMVP paramilitants did that. this time it is not possible.

those days EPDP and TMVP would do ANYTHING to survive. now buggers know there is no LTTE and no threat. now they come up with DEMANDS.

as i said b4, trinco, ampara are 100% OK.

i mean MR + SF > bahu + sivaji

real problems are in batti, jaffna and vanni.

in 2005 LTTE did NOT ask ppl to bycott the election. that's BS.

now we have only few options.

1. stop impersonation (voting using another's card) in jaffna/batti/vanni

2. get the 1990 muslim displaced ppl's votes counted in the jaffna result. not in putlam.

3. increase SLA checking on the election day. detain a few fellows early morning.

4. put up posters denouncing the vote bcos it cannot solve jaffna tamil ppl's problems.

5. rig the vote whereever possible in the north in favour of BOTH SF and MR. not having free and fair elections is OK than sending the wrong message.

6. kill a few LTTE suspects on the election day.

Moshe Dyan said...

consider the following scenarios.

1. NO TAMIL ELAM CANDIDATES
(that means northern voters tunrout will be low)

MR - 5,000 (50%)
SF - 4,800 (48%)
JOKERS - 200
TOTAL - 10,000

2. TAMIL ELAM CANDIDATES
(that means northern voters tunrout will be HIGHER)

MR - 5,000 (45%)
SF - 4,800 (44%)
JOKERS - 200
TE MFs - 1,000
TOTAL - 11,000

there are 2 things happening.

1. the winner cannot get 50% even if he and his main competitor gets the same number of votes.

2. second preference count will be required. IF TE MFs votes are very high, the second count will not be decisive.

3. that means a run-off election between MR and SF. this is the time for TE MFs to demand what they need and get them.

this is their plan.

that is why we have to use certain CREATIVE means to reduce the number of votes to TE jokers.

Moshe Dyan said...

hope our politicians look at this too.

no point winning the election BATTLE and losing the TE "war".

NYC hedge fund manager indicted on conspiracy, security fraud charges in insider trading case

NEW YORK (AP) -- A wealthy Manhattan hedge fund manager and another executive embroiled in a massive insider trading case were indicted Tuesday on multiple counts of conspiracy and securities fraud.

Billionaire Raj Rajaratnam had been arrested in October on a criminal complaint alleging he used inside information to make trades that generated millions of dollars in profits for a fund in his firm, the Galleon Group. There was no immediate response to a telephone message left Tuesday with his attorney.

The second person indicted in the $52 million insider trading case was Danielle Chiesi, a portfolio manager at New Castle Funds LLC. Defense attorney Alan Kaufman said his client would "vigorously fight the case in court."

Sri Lankan-born Rajaratnam and Chiesi, both free on bond, were to be arraigned Monday in federal court in Manhattan. The pair are among 21 Wall Street professionals charged in the case. Six have pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with the government.

If convicted, Rajaratnam and Chiesi each face up to 20 years in prison.

davidw,

yes, hate breeds hate.

that is the idea.

some ppl can manage hatred while others cannot.

between MR and SF, MR can manage hatred better than SF. so when you drag both of them into hatred, one emrges victorious.

its like the war.

war of attrition began in 2007. in a case of war of attrition, the party with most endurance wins, generally. (unless they give up). this was reinforced by retaliation (tit4tat killing). this led to LTTE giving up and running away.

killing 1,000 SLDFs while killing 1,000 LTTE have diferent levels of impact on the SLDFs and the LTTE.

so dragging both into a battle of hatred have different levels of impact on them. while one will thrive, the other will collapse.

SF's lack of political experience is the main reason for this. govt should go to town with this.

actually RW with years of experience was very good in managing hatred.

CBK - not very good. so in 2002 UNP cabinet ministers annoyed her so much that she didn't attend cabinet meetings!!

Ready to face any accusation: Rajapaksa

P.K.Balachandran
December 15, 2009

COLOMBO: In sharp contrast to the statement of his electoral rival Gen.Sarath Fonseka, who revealed that Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa had ordered the killing of surrendering LTTE leaders, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that he will not allow any war hero to be dragged before an international war crimes tribunal on this account, but will, instead, appear before it himself.

“I will never betray the Security Forces and am ready to face any accusation on behalf of the Security Forces that had made tremendous sacrifices for the nation,” Rajapaksa told representatives of 64 trade unions at his office here on Monday.

Certain forces in the opposition were engaged in denigrating the Security Forces, he noted, and appealed to them to desist from such action.

“I appeal to them not to level charges against the Security Forces but to level them against me,” Rajapaksa said raising his voice and his hand in a dramatic gesture. He described the Presidential election of January 26 as one between “the grateful and the ungrateful.”

Rajapaksa’s statement is in contrast to an earlier remark by Fonseka that he is not opposed to a war crimes probe if credible evidence of rights violations is given, because the Sri Lanka army does not have anything to hide.

While Rajapaksa has consistently opposed an international war crimes investigation or trial, Fonseka seems to have a different view, more in line with Western thinking on the subject.

Fonseka’s main supporter, the pro-West United National Party, is not against the internationalisation of the Sri Lankan conflict and has not resisted calls for a war crimes tribunal made by the Western powers.

Gen. Fonseka had said in a newspaper interview on Sunday, that he had been told by a journalist embedded with the 58 Division commanded by Maj.Gen.Shavindra Silva that Gotabaya Rajapaksa had ordered the killing of top LTTE leaders S.Puleedevan, B.Nadesan and Ramesh, if they came to surrender as per a previous agreement.

Ananda-USA said...

Ready to face any accusation: Rajapaksa

....continued...

This had created a storm both in the Rajapaksa and the Fonseka electoral camps. The Rajapaksa camp described the indictment as a “great betrayal” of the nation. The incumbent Army Chief, Lt.Gen.Jagath Jayasuriya, echoed the sentiment in the same way.

Afraid that their candidate’s statement would take away chunks of voters from the majority Sinhalese community, Fonseka’s managers swiftly got him to withdraw it.

On Monday, Fonseka said that he had been misquoted and that he was sure that there were no breaches of international law by Sri Lankan troops.

He also said that he, as the then Army chief, owned full responsibility for everything that happened during the war.

He then went on to clarify that no terrorist leader had come anywhere near army lines to surrender waving white flags on May 17,18 or 19, as contended by those who spread the story that Puleedevan, Nadesan and Ramesh had come waving white flags during that period.

Fonseka contended that the trio had died fighting a pitched battle in a narrow strip of land.

About calls for ending the fighting made by certain countries, the ex-Army chief said that the war could not be stopped at that stage.

“It was not a boxing match where the fighting could be stopped by the blowing of a whistle,” he said.

Ranil is working against SF or Sunday Leader is working against SF or both RW and Sunday Leader are working against SF.

When I said SF is not politically naive what I meant was he went to the lap of RW/Mangal/Mano and JVP by wilful design. During the process he was able to get them to his lap. There is no naivety about this. It was a well set up plan. Yet he is politically naive to under estimate Ranil's double game. SF's ego is preventing him to properly evaluate real situation because of his thirst for power to get even with MR, GR and many others.

Up to the point of getting his nomination to be backed by both JVP and UNP he played the game skilfully. Now here comes the phase of patience, reflection and proper evaluation. Here he will fail.

SF has gone to the same editor and has again confirmed what he has said and seemed to have asked the editor to cover up the story but there is no help from the editor. The editor is even telling this. It cannot be due to honesty. If the editor really needed to help SF then she would have refrained from publishing it and advised SF to be careful about such statements. It did not happen. What happened was exactly the opposite. It looks like they are relishing his fall-out.

Hatred blinds people.

The Carnival has begun. Let us enjoy it.

The Government is not yet fully utilising this. Actually some minister's statements are not quite helpful at all. They should walk on a fine line.

The scum who did not hesitate to level allegations against the officers who faithfully executed his commands, has started the baby talk. Such betrayal by a leader is unprecedented in Sri Lankan history. His petty hatred towards he former boss has turned him in to mad man ready to commit acts of treachery against the nation. Association of social cancers like Ranil-Mangala-Mano-Rauf-Anurakumara has turned him in to a social cancer. It is the time for the patriotic masses to give his a high doze of radiation on Jan-26.

Miliband,
Your ancestors were responsible for winnowing the flames of communalism in Sri Lanka and England is also responsible for the situation in Sri Lanka at the moment.

We know how to treat humans (and we do not hesitate to treat inhumans like late Prabakaran and his gang the way they deserve).

It would be better to manage your embarassments in Afghanistan, Iraq elsewhere and leave us to our own devices without messing things up, ok?

I also believe that the General may be suffering from some form of mental condition. He has been sleep deprived and always a tough and relentess person which takes a big toll on the brain cells. There are modern medications that are highly effective against these diseases for example dementia. However usually at the onset of such illnesses patients strongly refuse to consider that they suffer from someting "mental". As hypertension, diabetes and other common diseases there are many common mental illensses that affect many people. Even the best of them in fact. People need to wake up to this reality and seek medical attention and is nothing to be ashamed about. If not treated properly they will become sort of ghouls or zombies. It's good if the General gets a checkup at least.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that he will not allow any war hero to be dragged before an international war crimes tribunal on this account, but will, instead, appear before it himself.

“I will never betray the Security Forces and am ready to face any accusation on behalf of the Security Forces that had made tremendous sacrifices for the nation,” Rajapaksa told representatives of 64 trade unions at his office here on Monday.

Oh, wow. A true hero. A true leader. Show us the way MR, and there would be thousands of people to support you and follow you.

Sri Lanka to establish a space agency

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 16, Colombo: Sri Lankan government has taken measures to establish a space agency in Sri Lanka to improve the telecommunication technology in the country.

Director General of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Priyantha Kariyapperuma said that the preliminary assessments have already been made to explore the feasibility, state-owned Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation said.

The new agency is expected to promote development in many sectors including information and telecommunication technology. It will provide the opportunity for the private sector to invest in satellite communication as well, the Director General explained to the media.

He pointed out that the telecommunication industry in the country has shown a significant growth this year and it would benefit immensely from the establishment of such an agency.

Retrieve Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka, says PMK

December 16, 2009

RAMANATHAPURAM: Cadres of the Pattali Makkal Katchi on Wednesday staged a demonstration at Rameswaram, urging the State and Centre to solve the fishermen issue immediately and retrieve Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka.

Its president, S. Ramadoss presided over the agitation, which was held amid heavy rain. G.K. Mani, State president, district secretaries A. Subramanian, R. Thangaraju, K. Arivazhagan, State vice-president, S. Sagupar Sathik, State deputy general secretary, and several others took part.

They raised slogans against the Sri Lankan Navy for attacking the innocent fishermen from Tamil Nadu when they go for fishing near Katchatheevu.

They accused that the State and Centre should shoulder the responsibility for the loss of around 500 fishermen killed in the mid-sea firing since 1985. The agitators said that they would not allow harassment of fishermen hereafter. While raising slogans against the State and Centre for the draft bill on maritime regulations, Mr. Ramadoss said it was “anti-fishermen” and it would affect their livelihood, if it was made an act.

Sarath Fonseka's unpatriotic baby talk undermines Sri Lanka

........
Gota says battlefield excesses charge exposed Opp. strategy

by Shamindra Ferdinando

In his first public comments on last week’s The Sunday Leader lead news item "Gota ordered them (read as surrendering LTTE cadres) to be shot," on the basis of an interview given by former Army Chief turned Opposition presidential election candidate, General Sarath Fonseka, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa told The Island that a section of the international community, hell bent on undermining the Sri Lankan State, would take advantage of this situation.

Although General Fonseka had later claimed that the broad sheet misquoted him irreparable damage was done, he said. International wire services had zeroed-in on this allegation. Nothing could have pleased them as much as an opportunity to blame the Sri Lankan forces of battlefield excesses, he said.

The Sunday Leader, in what it called ‘an explosive revelation’, alleged that Rajapaksa had ordered Maj. General Shavindra Silva, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 58 Division not to take prisoners though a section of the LTTE leadership offered to surrender.

The former Gajaba Regiment veteran said that almost all major media groups, including the BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera and the influential Indian press sought his comments though he did not respond. According to him, the Indian press had emphasised that he could not turn a blind eye to criticism of his conduct as it was a major issue in India. The bottom line is that even if the Opposition candidate had disputed the news item, those who sided with the LTTE during Sri Lanka’s war on terror would now go on the offensive. He pointed out that the unsubstantiated allegation would help the Tamil Diaspora and peace merchants to revive their campaign against Sri Lanka.

He said that it would be interesting to see whether The Sunday Leader retracted its last week’s story. An irate Defence Secretary said that he could not understand how the Opposition could exploit an alleged war crimes charge to go one up at the ongoing presidential election campaign. Obviously this was nothing but an attempt to appease the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the Tamil Diaspora and some countries which desperately tried to save the sinking Tigers, he said. According to him, this particular allegation had been directed at frontline troops, including the Special Forces commanded by Major General Silva, though all fighting formations would now be suspect of war crimes. "Can anything be as despicable as this," he said emphasising that whatever the Opposition said people would not be deceived or surprised.

"People know that public transport is now safe and terrorists no longer threaten our schools nor will there be suicide attacks at political meetings," he said.

The Defence Secretary said that this was no longer a domestic political issue but a contentious matter which would cause far reaching ramifications. The Sunday Leader editor Fredrika Jansz is on record as saying that she stood by her story.

...continued.....

The Defence Secretary pointed out that the Opposition had denied him any credit for the successful offensive though now an unprecedented accusation was being made to the effect that he bypassed the Army headquarters and directly ordered a GOC not to take prisoners. "Don’t forget over 11,000 LTTE cadres are in our custody. We went to the extent of providing schools for terrorists and also allowing hundreds to sit the GCE O/L examination. We gave several opportunities to LTTE cadres as well as civilians to surrender. LTTE leader Velupllai Prabhakaran’s parents took advantage of this," he said.

The Defence Secretary said that a section of the media, which opposed the military offensive against the LTTE, was now working overtime to deny President Rajapaksa a second term. He urged the electorate to recall what Opposition politicians and the media propagated during the recently concluded war. Their campaign, he said was directed at internationally isolating the country thereby denying the much needed support to finish off the Tigers.

'Top Tigers ditched LTTE chief'

P.K.Balachandran
December 16, 2009

COLOMBO: In the last phase of Eelam War IV, many of the top leaders of the LTTE foresook Supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran, and preferred to surrender to the Sri Lankan forces rather than attain martyrdom by fighting to the finish or consuming cyanide, the latest report of the University Teachers for Human Rights-Jaffna (UTHR-J) reveals.

“Dissent was strong even amongst the leadership. Sea Tiger Leader Soosai had walked out of the last leaders’ meeting disagreeing with Prabhakaran. Pottu Amman too felt that military resistance was doomed and wanted another way out, but did not confront Prabhakaran openly as Soosai had done,” the report says.

NO ROOM FOR PRABHAKARAN IN HISTORY

Among the first to lose faith in Prabhakaran was V.Balakumar, the former EROS leader who went on to earn a name for himself as an ace motivator of LTTE cadre, including its suicide wing. He eventually became a rallying point for dissidents.

“He was so disillusioned that he saw the continuance of the LTTE leadership as a grave liability for the Tamils. Many persons with dissident views found in Balakumar a source of moral support,” the report says.

“Because of his personal rapport with Prabhakaran, he wrote to him regularly. Some who saw these letters told Balakumar that the issues were so serious but he was writing in the polite and restrained manner of a social exchange. Balakumar explained that if anyone told (adviced) Prabhakaran anything he would reject it out of hand. One needed to work on him gently so that he would feel the change as coming from him. However, in one of his final letters, Balakumar had told Prabhakaran that history would have no room for him,” the report reveals.

SENT FAMILIES AWAY

On April 19, while at Puthumattalan on the eastern coast, Balakumar’s family got into a boat with 20 people sailed in a southerly direction. But the LTTE shot at the boat forcing it to return.

The war forced the family to move further to Mullivaikkal. While Balakumar’s wife Indrani left for Pulmoddai on Apri 23 by the first Red Cross ship to call at Mullivaykkal, he and his son teenaged Sooriyatheepan had to wait until May 16, when the LTTE allowed the civilians to surrender to the army.

Balakumar and son went to the 53 army Division near Irattaivaykkal, along the Nanthikadal lagoon. When he identified himself, the army treated the duo kindly, put them in a tractor, because Balakumar was a heart patient and wounded too, and drove them away.

Though a dissident, Sea Tiger leader Soosai was killed in battle, but he tried to send away his family by boat to India with his family jewellery. This effort failed as the Sri Lankan navy caught up with them not far from the eastern coast.

KEY LEADERS SURRENDERED

Like Balakumar, many top LTTE leaders reportedly surrendered in the last three days of the war, between May 16 and 19.

The UTHR-J report mentions the following top leaders as having surrendered: Karikalan (former eastern province political wing leader and subsequently in charge of the economic disivion), Yogaratnam Yogi (former spokesman of the LTTE), Lawrence Tilagar (a former spokesman of the LTTE, a one time head of LTTE office in Paris and later in charge of the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation), Thangan (former Deputy political section leader), Ilamparithi (former head of the political section for Jaffna district), Elilan (former Trincomalee political wing leader), Papa (former head of the LTTE sports division), Puvannan (former head of the administrative division of the LTTE), Gnanam (deputy international head) and Tamilini head of the Women’s political wing.

The LTTE detainees, who now number about 11,000, are kept in special camps, and their families are allowed to meet them. But according to the UTHR-J, in 25 percent of the cases, such a meeting has not been possible because the whereabouts of the detainees have not been revealed.

Partition of Andhra Pradesh pits its citizens against each another

Language, race, caste and wealth hold sway.

...........
Parochial interests behind anti-Telangana stir

Mohammed Shafeeq
December 16, 2009

HYDERABAD: If Hyderabad had not been the bone of contention, perhaps Andhra Pradesh would not have seen the kind of protests it is now witnessing over the move to grant statehood to the backward Telangana region.

With huge business interests at stake in Hyderabad, geographically and historically a part of Telangana, politician-industrialists from the prosperous coastal Andhra are not ready to let go this technology and economic hub.

Unable to reconcile to the sudden decision of the central government, these politicians are being accused of fuelling the street protests by students and youths on the slogan of Samaikya Andhra or United Andhra.

It is no wonder that some of them are demanding union territory status to Hyderabad in the event of a Telangana state becomes inevitable.

However, leaders like Vijayawada MP L. Rajagopal, whose Lanco Group has huge investments in Hyderabad, claim that the protests are spontaneous and for aimed at keeping Telugus united and strong.

Many people were caught unaware by the announcement for the creation of a separate state. Investors from other regions would need four to five years to relocate from Hyderabad, said an Osmania University professor who did not want to be identified.

The investments by major business houses owned by Andhras are estimated at Rs.50,000 crore, the bulk of which was invested since the mid-1990s when Hyderabad emerged on the global IT map.

The unprecedented growth of real estate sector during the last one decade saw major businessmen from other regions acquiring huge chunks of land around the new international airport and along the upcoming world-class outer Ring Road in recent years.

The demand for Telangana state is not new but there were no protests in coastal Andhra or Rayalaseema when the Congress party joined hands with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in the 2004 elections when the statehood issue was included in the common minimum programme of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government or when the UPA set up a committee to look into the demand, pointed out Rama Brahmam, professor of political science in Hyderabad University.

There were also no protests when the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) backed the demand for alliance with TRS in the elections this year, Brahmam told IANS.

Ananda-USA said...

Parochial interests behind anti-Telangana stir

.....continued....

Most people believe that Andhra businessmen, who own IT/ITES companies, infrastructure and real estate firms, hotels, corporate hospitals as well as film production houses, were not worried as Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and his predecessor N. Chandrababu Naidu were strongly opposed to the break up of the state.

The politicians also tried to cash in on the fear factor. During campaigning for this year's elections, YSR told the people of coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema that if the TDP-TRS took power, they would not be able to do business and work in Hyderabad as they would be treated like foreigners.

There is also the caste angle to the Telangana issue. Upper caste Khammas and Reddys, who are politically and economically dominant in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, are against separate statehood to Telangana.

Telangana, which accounts for 40 percent of the state's nearly 80 million population, has an overwhelming majority of weaker sections. The backward classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled tribes and minorities account for over 70 percent of the region's population.

The upland Telangana is arid though two major rivers (Krishna and Godavari) flow through the region downstream to coastal Andhra, which is fertile and is known as the rice bowl of India.

Some people in coastal region also sense threat to their agricultural prosperity from the proposed Telangana state.

Whatever you guys say here, SF is a mastermind as much as GR, if you say that GR is a greater mastermind. MR's camp was spraying mud (rather unreasonable) over SF camp. The SF bombshell stopped all that in the K-Mart/Walmart bog. Now a SL friend that has been booted out after the war - like SF - (MR's condom strategy) sings a song that has rattled our closest neighbour to the bone. Folks you can shout till cows come home but there is more to the eye in this storm. With 37 odd advisers, MR has utterly failed to manage a War Hero, after the war (condom strategy, yet again). This is why SL people may vote in this man to clean up the Augean stables. Guess what, China is as comfortable with SF as much as MR. How did that happen? Look at the 16th Daily News and look at the braodly smiling faces of Kiri Goviyas MR got from villages. We tax payers in SL are bank rolling MR and the Clan to steam roll our future.

What I was thinking is correct.

Sunday leader statement was a well planed time bomb by SF. And that might be the turning point of this PE.

Max Headroom said...

To Sam Perera,

You have included SF at the top of the list of "Jathiye Pahara Ballo".

Now then lets assume that MR wins the PE in grand style albeit with overt support from India because the South Bloc or RAW may have in the first place created the rift between MR and SF for reasons well known to them.

Right after the PE, the US Govt. where most of you folks live raises the War Crime matter more forcefully. India may not want to have that analysed in detail lest its hand will be uncovered. To overcome that India will once again prevail upon MR to merge Nort and East provinces and devolve power to the maximum - no problem about that for me.

In that eventuality, would you put MR above SF on your list?

Mark my word, the Condom strategy will be invoked and MR will do the bidding for India, to make unitary SL (under SF) to federal SL (under MR).

Max Headroom said...

To Swarnajith Udana,

You are blinded for some reason by the halo of MR. Brother, have some detachment. Everything is not right with MR - see the tiredness in his face and look at SF, calm as a "smiling assasin".

Do not write of gay Mangala and the JVP. I do not much care about Ranil but Mangala is no donkey.

Love to see some real good analysis from you guys. We who live in Lanka feel strongly that MR should be shown the door. If he was a real statesman then when he was given a crown in a glass box at a felicitation ceremony in Matale, he should have called his three services commanders; IGP and the Commander of the Civil Defence Force and "crowned" them and then told the nation that he has crowned the "Rana Viruwas". Why should he do that? Why didn't he do that? What will happen then.

Blog admins should analyse these events and write their recommendations so those 37 advisers of MR could read all of that and advise MR in turn. Without signing hossanas for MR, you folks could do lot of justice to him and his campaign.

Max Headroom said...

SL does not need a space agency but a good economist for MR if he comes into a second term. An Economist (with xlls and the brain) is needed to run two economies in Sri Lanka: GOSL and MR & Co. plc. Nivard could be be sent over to manage Pyramids in Egypt and Amunu could be the articulate mouthpiece of that Ecnomist. Aren't there any one in Berkeley?

Of course, MR has not thought about the population and condos though much thought is given to condoms.

He may need the SL Space Agency towards the ned of his second term to establish a MR space colony for his brood.

Ranil is rubbing salt into the political wounds of SF.

SF in public wants to say that he does not say anything.

Ranil demands the Government to explain SF's war cirme charges aginst the Government.

By doing so, Ranil is refusing SF's tactical denial

Also, SF has told the Sunday Leader even though to wade off political fall out he would deny what he said in reality he would never deny what he said.

This is a threat for National security.

So many surrendees are taken well care off by the Government. If there were proper surrenders of any other this would have been the situation for them too.

Some support SF since he is from Ambalangoda.

My stand is that at the moment we need political stability. That comes with MR not an SF who chooses the lap of Mangala, Ranil and JVP

Swarnajith Udana said...

Correction

Only a few of bloggers here and some others out there are taking a stand on this in the hope of a better future for the Nation. They may genuinely think it is SF or MR.

That does not matter much since in a way we are in the same boat.

But crossing and voting for ministerships or parochialism respectively is not some thing that I can fathom.

This is my personal way of thinking. If you do not like it then so be it and leave it. Thanks and best regards to you Max Hordan.

Max Headroom said...

Swarnajith,

MR and GOSL better tread the water carefully here.

SF knows more than what you and I and all bloggers here know. I am sure a lot of dirt would have flown under the bridge in good times.

I am a Sinhalaya, living in Sri Lanka. Unlike having a one track mind, I look into all angles.

If MR wins, I am sure Sri Lanka will become federal at the instigation of India. It will start with the merger of North and East and Dougi Buriya will start his Baila for an autonomous region - the rise of the old tiger!

I want SF to win for several reasons:

1) Kick ass all these rogue Ministers: Mervin, Rohitha, Maithreepala, Boggols, BR but leaving out GR and MR

2) Recruit more into the Army and bolster forces in the North and East

3) Give our Tamil friends 13+ within a unitary Sri Lanka

3) Jettison Ranil W. if he tries his "Kakul Mattu" & "Vettu". Give him performance objectives and make him deliver

4) Probe activities of Dr. JJ and Mr. Ravi Karunanayagam

5) Get disabled soldiers into the public service

6) Get corporates to sponsor Soldier families and give tax rebates for their time and effort

7) Clean up the Police. Force all political cronies from DIG upwards into early retirement

8) Establish independent commissions

9) Run the Goverment and the Country like an enterprise with prudent management and transparency

10) Empower people to realize their potential to their best ability

For a President of a country just a 10 point plan is enough. What has MR done with his tome? It could adore his tombstone one day.

An outrageous and irresponsible statement relating to the Security Forces has posed a number of problems to the country, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He said the entire country has to face the adverse impact of this type of misleading and reckless statement. This type of erratic statement could bring problems not only to the Defence Secretary but to the country at large, he said.

The President was addressing Registered Medical Officers and Assistant Medical Officers at Temple Trees. These Medical Officers for the first time extended their fullest support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa`s candidature at the forthcoming Presidential Election.

MR has put it in the right form.

Some of Ministers were also reckless about SF's statement as Nearly as SF was.

2) Recruit more into the Army and bolster SF's Ego and power.

3) Promise our LTTE friends 13+ S and more to get elected then create a Sinhalese racist military regime as he once promised.

3) Take Ranil W. as political and ecconomic guru.

4) Probe activities of GR, Shavindra Silva, MR. Also Mervin too, but protect Mangala, Ranil

5) ----------------------------

6) -----------------------------------------

7) Clean up the Police of any MR clans (with good and bad ones) and foster it with cronies of all kind, Specially SF kind.

8) Establish commissions independent of truth and dependent on SF type (doing it on the rock and being unable to cover it type, even the editor and his political guru say that he said it ) truth

this is crap.

i know the logic behind it but gonston is not the man for that.

kurunegala is the district with the highest number of army soldiers. so some strange reason kurunegala SLA families are pro-UNP. this is the reason. but gonston's JPB activities are much worse.

Fonseka told the media that the government was trying to implicate him in the killing of a journalist. He may dismiss what his rivals say about him as malicious propaganda. But, unfortunately for him, a serious allegation against him has come from his friends in the UNP, which gave him a rousing welcome at its National Convention the other day and threw its weight behind him in the presidential race. Chief Opposition Whip and UNP MP Joseph Michael Perera, speaking in Parliament sometime ago accused him of directing violent attacks on journalists. On July 08, 2008, BBC reported Perera's speech thus:

'Sri Lanka's main opposition party has accused the country's most senior army officer of being behind violent attacks on reporters.
Opposition MP Joseph Michael Perera told parliament that the attacks were carried out by a 'special team' controlled by Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka.
Mr. Perera said the government should arrest the offenders and 'immediately bring them to justice'.
The army has denied that it is any way involved in attacks on journalists.
"We are told by those in the army itself that journalists are abducted and subjected to grievous injury by none other than a special unit under the army commander," Mr. Perera, a former parliamentary speaker, said.'

It will be interesting to know what the UNP has got to say about this allegation now. Does it stand by it? If not, it will have to admit that it misled Parliament, the people of this country and the international community with the aforesaid statement.

guys,

toilet (tamil organizations for the international liberation of elam tamils) is holding referndum after referendum.

saturday it will be canada - the biggest tamil die-arse-pora crap in the world.

they maintain secrecy until the last moment in fear of disruptions.

norway, france, canada, SL.

norway and france had a VERY HIGH TURNOVER at these referenda. don't get confused with the crap election in norway which had very low participation.

don't brush aside these referenda as jokes. they are not. this is very serious.

for SL they use a similar strategy. miliband's words have a deep meaning. they want to use the SL PE as a referndum to check the support for tamil elam.

these are classic self determination achieving methods. of course SL can disrupt it, refuse it, but mainly european countries will support TE after these refernda.

b4 it is too late, at least now we should start a MASSIVE colonization drive in the north. soon it will be too late.

look at speed of these referendums.

war ended in may. so far we have 4 either held or planned. the norway referendum was held even b4 LTTE was annihilated.

this is the biggest threat to SL today.

we can laugh and call it norway elam, french elam, canadian elam, but unless we do something to change the tamil only nature of the north, we will regret.

wake up patriots wake up!

the blake miliband strategy has another side.

looks like whoever wins, blake and miliband are going to win!!

by getting ponseka to contest from the UNP, blake and miliband have left the tamil and some muslim voters in the north east choiceless.

they will vote for bahu and sivajilingam.

north east when taken seperately, will win bahu + sivajilangam, both tamil elamists.

so after the election, blake and miliband will say, look, ppl in the north east have approved tamil elam WITHOUT THE LTTE, so at least give them a federal solution.

while sri lankans are busy fighting between two nationalists, tamil elamists will score a goal.

Opposition MP Joseph Michael Perera told parliament that the attacks were carried out by a “special team” controlled by Lt Gen Sarath Fonseka.
Mr Perera said the government should arrest the offenders and “immediately bring them to justice”.

Expert Inspector said...

Sarath Fonseka thought he was hurling a deadly missile when he accused Maj-Gen. Shavendra Silva of carrying out the orders of the Defence Secretary, in his absence, to eliminate the top LTTE leaders in Nanthi Kadal as they were coming out with white flags. But his missile hung in the air for a while and instead of hitting his opponents it swung violently and boomeranged on him, knocking him down and exposing him as a man not fit to wear the Sri Lankan Army uniform, it is sad to say.

It is not only the first biggest gaffe in his election campaign it is a crime committed against his own Army which he can never live down. He has kicked the Army which lifted him to the highest rank of a general. Yesterdays’ hero is acting like today’s Nero gone mad. The international repercussions reverberating round the world are a testimony to the irreparable damage he has done to the most professional Army of elite cadres that had won global respect for defeating the “invincible” Tamil Tigers.

Right now Fonseka is as confused as Velupillai Prabhakaran when he was on the run, retreating as fast he could, into Nanthi Kadal. On Sunday he accused one of his brilliant field commanders, Maj-Gen. Shavendra Silva, without whom he could never have won the war, and on Monday he summons a press conference to retract and claim full responsibility for all what happened in the battlefield. This is a useless exercise which does not serve either him or the Army which he commanded because, whether he admits it or not, under the laws of “command responsibility” he has to bear the responsibility for all the acts of his men, irrespective of whether he was aware of it or not. So he has shot himself in the foot by opening his mouth.

Also consider his other contradiction. On Sunday he uses the anti-Sri Lankan media in the private sector to fire his volley targeting the government, particularly his friend, Gotabaya Rajapakse, who made him the Army Commander over his other rivals, and on Monday he files charges in the Supreme Court against the state media targeting him.

There is more. At Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda he claimed responsibility for killing the Tamil Tiger leadership which advanced bearing white flags and in his Colombo flat he tells the Sunday Leader that he did not know what happened at Nanthi Kadal because he was in China. This again was contradicted by him earlier. In countering the charge that he was not in Sri Lanka during the last days of the battle, he had claimed proudly that he was in touch with his commanders wherever he was. Now, when he is caught with his white sarong down, he blames the government for exposing his nakedness.

Clearly the “Common Candidate” Sarath Fonseka in civvies is betraying the General who was in uniform. His split personality poses a serious problem to the public who sees the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in him as two ridiculous creatures clashing head-on with neither gaining any credibility. This is what happens when you lie with dogs at your feet: you get up with fleas in your brain.

He is treating not only the loyal officers who brought him and the nation glory with contempt but he also expects the people to follow him each time he switches sides, accuses anybody whom he likes, twists and turns according to his political ambitions and exposes himself as an unprincipled opportunist. If he thinks that the people will forgive him for betraying his own forces he got another think coming! Unfortunately, he is today looking more like the lily that has begun to fester!

Expert Inspector said...

The worst is his attack on Maj-Gen. Shavendra Silva, one of the most committed, self-sacrificing, loyal field commanders who risked his life every step of the way, from the Rice Bowl in Mannar in the west to Nanthi Kadal in the eastern coast. And he carried out his commands to perfection.
If Fonseka was concerned about the killing of the Tiger leadership that came out from their hiding places with white flags did he hold an inquiry into it after the journalists told him about it? Did he ask for explanations from Maj-Gen. Shavendra Silva as to what happened? Did he make any inquiries from his Intelligence Units to verify the stories of the journalists?

It is very sad – I repeat, very, very. sad — to see Sarath reacting with such indecent vindictiveness against his comrades-in-arms. Yes, he has taken responsibility but the damage has been done. , Besides, that is irrelevant as pointed out earlier because the law has pinned him down, whether he likes it or not. He has insulted not only one of his best field commanders but the nation as well.

His retraction has come too late. Furthermore, he has still not apologized either to Maj-Gen. Shavendra Silva or to the Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapakse. They are all a part of the same outfit. If he condemns one he condemns all including himself. In his haste to get even with Gotabaya Rajapakse he dragged in Maj-Gen. Silva. He wanted to impress that he was a good boy by pointing the finger at his own fellow-officers without realizing that, in doing so, he would be digging his own grave.

What he has failed to realize is that he has fallen into a trap of his own making. He is now in the predictable situation of all men who betray their friends and join the enemies. When you join you former enemies to fight against your former friends you are in a situation where you are forced to condemn those who backed you earlier to be with the enemies who are making use of you. In the process you lose the prestige, the integrity, decency and the power, however limited, you had earlier. You invariably have to become the tool of your enemies because they have no other use for you.

This is precisely what Ranil Wickremesinghe intends doing to Sarath Fonseka. He said so candidly in Jaffna: “The opposition intends to use Sarath Fonseka only as a tool to eliminate Mahinda Rajapakse from the presidential post; people should not be afraid of him because he was an army commander,” Ranil Wicremasinghe, (sic) the leader of the opposition said Saturday night in Jaffna at a press meet held in ‘Yaa’lpaadi’ guest house, sources in Jaffna said. (TamilNet, Sunday, 13 December 2009, 08:18 GMT)

Wickremesinghe, of course, was trying to market Fonseka, a hated figure among the Tamils, as a force without power to do anything without his consent. But that is yet to be seen if and when Fonseka wins the presidency. Apart from his weak attempt to allay the fears of the Tamils Wickremesinghe is also taking a side swipe at the General to put him in his place.

This portends a conflict of interest which is going to blow up in time to come. Gen. Fonseka may lie low now until gets his hands on the levers of power. Once he is ensconced in the seat of power Wickremesinghe will have to follow the same path as Prabhakaran into Nanthi Kadal. Already, Wickremesinghe must be feeling the heat of Gen. Fonseka floundering in the unfamiliar territory of politics without a road map. Wickremesinghe’s asset is turning out to be a liability for which he may have to pay a heavy price on January 26th, 2010.. .

Expert Inspector said...

By behaving like a loose cannon Fonseka has come out as the most untrustworthy and unscrupulous colleague and commander. So how can he ask the people to elect him as their next Commander-in-Chief when he could not maintain the honour and dignity of an Army Commander? Can any member of the Security Forces trust him? Can the nation trust him? If he can betray his colleagues with accusations based on gossip how long will he take to betray the nation?

For the moment, let us forget that aspect of living up to the ideals of an officer and a gentleman. It was his duty as a fellow-human being to show some degree of gratitude to his comrade-in-arms. What Sarath did is a disgrace to the entire Sri Lankan Army. He has by his own bitterness and folly gone beyond the limits and taken away the better part of the gloss which he gained from the successes of field commanders like Shavendra Silva.

Maj-Gen. Shavendra Silva is a quiet but tough soldier who has proved his worth by commanding the 58th Division which cleared the entire Western coast, captured A9 road and advanced eastward until he reached the eastern coast at break of dawn on April 21, 2008. He began his march from the Rice Bowl in Mannar on 27th September 2007 and never stopped until May 18th 2009 in Vellamulli Vaikkal in the eastern coast. One of the calculated tactics was not to give breathing space to the Tigers to recover or regroup. They were kept on the run all the time. The Tigers were hit from all sides simultaneously and they were running as fast as they could, not knowing how to stop the advancing forces.

The primary priority in the agenda of Maj-Gen Silva was to clear the western coast. To clear the western coast he had to capture and hold Mannar. This was the key point through which the Tigers infiltrated the south. His target was to go from Mannar to Ponneryn, 85 km north. That was also shortest point to India.

To consolidate his position in Mannar he had to capture the Rice Bowl —9 km x 9 km wide open space occupied by the Tamil Tigers. They were entrenched with maximum forces. It was a killer terrain and difficult to advance. Shavendra’s forces inched their way by night as day time light made them sitting ducks for the Tigers. It took nine months to capture the Rice Bowl – the first big breakthrough.

After the capture of the Rice Bowl he began his march toward Pooneryn which was the turning point in the Vanni operation. When the Tigers lost Pooneryn they lost total control of Jaffna and the entire western coast.. From there he came down south to capture A 9 and then cut across to the east. There he met the other forces advancing from the south. That was the crowning glory of all the advancing forces: they all met in Vellamulli Vaikal beach on May 16, 2009.

After May 19, when the death of Prabhakaran was confirmed, the Army had to reorient itself to the emerging tasks of peace time. A peace time soldier plays a different role. 44-year old Maj-Gen. Shavendra Silva, an old boy of St. Thomas’ Matale, was thankful to his Army Commander, his men who stood by him, and the nation he defended so bravely. The last thing he would have expected at the time was to be let down by his Army Commander. One of Prabhakaran’s bullets going through his heart, I’m sure, would not have shocked him as the blow dealt by his Army Commander. He could have taken that bullet with equanimity but not the ungrateful cut of his Army Commander.

The nation is once again facing a trying time not because of the enemies but due to the betrayals of the so-called friends of the nation. With friends like Gen. Fonseka, who is now working with Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mangala Samaraweera and Somawansa Amerasinghe, what difference does Prabhakaran’s death make to the future of Sri Lanka? The enemies within are always more vicious than the enemies that lurk in the periphery.

There is a very substantial chunk that MR will lose. These are the votes of the poor peasant Sinhalese Buddhists in rural areas whose basic rights have been denied by provincial councillors and government servants due to corruption. Details of how these basic rights have been denied have been given daily for years and years by MTV and Srisa. Even at this late stage if MR were to investigate what the MTV and Sirasa are saying daily in their “Action TV” program and take firm legal action against the offenders who are politicians both of the UPFA and the UNP and government servants demanding jail sentences it would help provided it is done genuinely. If such sentences could be had and if wide publicity is given to the undesirables in the UPFA and the government servants then MR could get the votes of these innocent people provided he restores their rights. The whole country is fed up with politicians who abuse their powers and government servants who do not do their duty because they know a politician who could protect him. Apathy has already set in and many may not vote.

When really thinking of these folks - MR, GR, BR etc etc, they should think strategically and make smart moves.

Even at this time, I hope sanity will prevail for MR to absorb SF into his campaign as his Vice President; derail Ranil W. and those peelamists all over the world holding their referendums and jettison all those scum in his cabinet to seek that unity in the majority community that existed immediately after May 18th 2009 but which slipped out of MR's hand.

Folks it is important to keep Sri Lanka in equilibrium with all these powers and powers to be in the world at large. Lest we will be torn apart by competing forces.

If you have "Lines of Communications" to MR and his clan, make an urgent appeal to them to forge the unity for better sense to prevail.
