Beyond 2009: The Butterfly Effect of National Security

2009 marks a remarkable point in SL history. It is an year of victory, triumph, and a certainty, with most vulnerabilities we faced as a nation deterred. We ought to live happily ever after, yet 2010 comes with more uncertainties and debate. Election heat is getting to its boiling point, with shameful betrayal and defamation. Forgotten and little spoken is the topic of national security today.

Yet the happenings have not left the topic barren. With lots of butterflies flapping their wings, we do not know when the category five may land upon us. While wishing our community a prosperous and joyful new year for 2010, this is an effort to look at the odds.

TNA Factor:

After the demise of Pussycats as a militia, the spotlight shone upon their political twin TNA, undoubtedly. Presidential Election extended this scenario. Both candidates have played Santa-Claus for TNA votes. And at least some of the official agreements contain segments that seem to threaten national security. Even if they turn out to be usual empty promises of Presidential Election, the General Election to be held immediately after, makes the promises more real. TNA will use their seats for bargaining.

However, TNA is set to prove that they're a synthetic alliance created in front of smoking AK 47 and they may fall apart into pieces. If this happens there will inevitably be lots and lots of active parties in Northern political arena, none gaining a majority of any kind. They'd sell their votes/seats at the best price they get for their variants of the same old demands. It may not be as rosy as it looks. Instead of one big federalist element there will be many little ones, and they may infest both sides during GE.

Nevertheless the diminishing of this biggest racist political movement in SL will be a welcome change. We need to move forward from elements of racism and make room for more generous and broad thinking political movements that represent one SL. Importantly, breaking up of TNA would make room for them to groom, if any.

That fallen Baton:

If such broad thinking non-racist movements fail to capitalize on TNA break up, it may make way for new Tamil militia. If TNA fails to represent Northern people, is there a political capacity in the rest to lead them? UNP is not in a position for any serious political discussion instead of providing political jokes. JVP who hinted as a good national level party, seems loosing whatever they had in the Southern regions as well. This leaves Northern Tamils with only option of SLFP, in the lack/break of TNA.

SLFP provides a hope right now. It already has some people such as Karuna [who may not be most preferred by them, but still a better choice than some unknown SLFP organizer]. I am predicting the possibility of some pussycat leaders appearing in SLFP lists in future. SLFP will provide a good non-racist political alternative for the Northern people, for few years.

But it is not enough. It needs a similar opposition as SLFP is the likely party in power. Lack of that may give opportunity for a new militia. This threat is quite high for next decade or so.

Until we have a certain picture on the Northern vote bases, and the direction of its flow, we need to pre-empt this possibility. It is a time to compare the golden years of late 2000s, in search of answers to what mistakes we did in late 70s and early 80s. How to use our military to diminish a movement in formation - that is the question for the defence establishments.

Pussycat-ospora, anger, revenge and hatred:

Anger and revenge was primarily the backbone of the whole havoc caused in SL by Tamil diaspora. More than Eelam they wanted to give us the biggest return, maybe hurt for the savage 1983, or maybe due to the superiority complex most of them seem to suffer from. And it ended up being a totally lost gamble, a huge waste of time and money of a million plus group of people. More anger has made them wanting to return to the same traits and give us a bigger blow. And they still have financial power to do so.

This is one more reason why a militia can be formed even in the death of the pussycat. If not for any other reason, diaspora cash-cow could be the prime reason for someone to create a fake "rebellion" against us. However, this seems to be an area which current defence/diplomatic establishments are tackling pretty well. We need to intense the acts. We should not rest until last active pussycat is behind bars.

Other side of the Pussycat-ospora:

While one part of them trying to give us the best blood bath possible, the other part is plotting the best political structure to make room for Eelam. The Trans- Notional Government and the corresponding elections are one segment of it. The minority forum held in Switzerland for all minority parties, is another. This alliance is highly supported by the INGOs, and many other foreign elements. Most of war crimes claims, and the defamation of SL are parts of this main plot.

Idea is to create a hostile environment for SL, and leave most minds ready to accept Eelam, should there be the slightest chance for it being declared. Also to push the GOSL to maximum in case there is some kind of negotiation.

Regrettably many local politicians including General Fonseka lately, have fallen into this plot. More dangerous will be if General looses campaign and finds life in Sri Lanka meaningless and flees to west looking for ways to revenge Rajapakses.

This is not an empty threat or a laugh-stock. In 90s when Wardharajah Perumal declared the N/E province as Eelam, [illegally] he lacked any formal acceptance from any part of the world. This was despite his capacity as the Chief Minister with [full] power of 13th amendment [although none gave him self-determination]. It would have given him good acceptance, had the world got prepared for the idea. Today's laid out foundations are for a future Wardharajah.

This is where we need to bring strong legal grounds to combat separatism. After 30years of separatist war SL is still entertaining the thinking, talking and organizing of separation. It can only combat separation by means of anti-terrorism. Separatists to date, foolishly took the same and hence got decimated. Yet we have no weapons to combat the peaceful version of separatism. This is a loophole we need to close soon, or the result will be regretful.

IDP turned Mentally Displaced:

IDPs are being settled. With them the multi million dollar topic [of NGOs] is gone. Yet the settling process looks hasty and a rash plan. Perhaps pushed into it by many such parties.

It is very important to handle them sensibly and delicately. More than the infrastructure and underlying needs, most of these people are mentally displaced, still so.

And that leaves all possibilities open. Most these people suffered in many hands, yet they may take it all from the GOSL. They may find their current lives not so filling and, in the slightest mistake, abandoned. Instead of working for their own future cum country's, they may work for country's destruction and eventually theirs.

In simple words the release was too early and primitive. In other words we need to make sure every plan we have to counter any bad formations among them, since they are very likely.

For racist politicians, for diaspora and INGOs, this bulk of ppl [together with other tamils in those regions] are the work horse. Every evil plot of the prior groups are made real by them. And for that reason they would invest their best to get these ppl lined up for their plans. Slightest mistake will be definitely highlighted in the process.

Govt should provide them all the needs and help them to get on with life and prosper. So far it looks good going. Yet the goals are still a significant distance away.

Not only the caretaking but also they should be monitored and closely spied. There is nothing wrong in spying. Today most western countries listen to Muslim circles day and night. We can do the same with them.

Mono-ethnic Enclaves, and unfair and preventive laws from Integration:

This is a topic discussed by likes of Moshe in many rounds. Needless to add, Multi-ethnic recolonization as our pals coined it, is an essence. Not only that the vast reserves of Wanni needs more people and it should be equally available for all Sri Lankans. Any laws violating that right should be removed, and challenged by means of basic rights.

As Moshe states, this is the best way to end racism. Yet they're late. This should have begun in parallel to IDP resettlement. Still never too late.

Devolu[natic]tion:

Most Australians whom I knew supported Federalism for SL, until when I told them "Hey you wanna divide an island in the size of Tasmania into so many states, ha?" Most critical reason why federalism does not apply to SL is the size of it. Very little countries there exist, whose states can be run across in a day.

Moreover it is impractical as it naturally leads up to the separation as many above mentioned forces work day and night to achieve it. Anything we mark by means of federal or any other race-based twin sister of it, will be simply another step for international recognition for eelam. And any power we grant such, is a road open to get there.

It is very clear that SL needs devolution. But most hurting needs are regarding administration and development. Not about defence and policy making. Devolution should focus these requirements. Smaller regions should be given more powers in administrating and developing their regions. Center should standardize all the policy and other critical issues including defence and should hold it under their control. Regions should be smaller than current ethnic barriers and should not have any ethnic basis.

Sadly, the lunatics who call themselves the professional devolutionists fail to understand this. In reality most such are rusted socialists who still read "Das Capital" to find best socialist ways of making love. We need to move out from here and get many "other"politicians into act. If we agree for Devolution we need to agree it all together and work hard to make it a healthy and safe plan.

Human migration and the millennium to come:

Sri Lanka is the dead end of a great human migration. Northern and Southern parts of India provided a flux of people who found nothing but great Indian ocean beyond this island. In recent millennium, Tamilnadu's population eruption has sent a lava flow of humans through to the island. It will keep on doing so within whatever legal and illegal frameworks of the day.

This means that eventually one day SL will be tamil dominant, theoretically. Today's world order saves us thanks to countries and visa barriers, hence making illegal immigration the only way. But there is no assurance that such structures will remain in tact for ever. In the millennial view this risk exists at large.

It leaves the Sri Lankans with a two way approach. Firstly be very open hearted. They should support any kinda integration of anyone into their fold. They should not base themselves on race, and the open and extended hands should embrace anyone who comes under their flag. Secondly they should be ruthless to anyone who's trying to pull down the flag.

And on this regards we need to learn everything from Israel.

In a summary; we need to address the following topics in this dawning 2010.

- Tamil racist politics: how to dismantle them
- Stop playing into their demands due to cheap political gain
- Banning Separatism
- Filling the northern political vaccum
- Increasing security of North and East. Establishing permanent camps and increasing numbers.
- Have an anticipative plan on combating terrorism at its birth.
- Taking care of IDPs, and providing them sustainable development
- Spying and monitoring the same
- Multi Ethnic Recolonization
- Combating illegal immigration and coast guard

As the new year brings a new president, these topics should be more significant when you decide on your candidate for voting. Whoever wins, these haunting questions will be nagging soon to be addressed. Failing which they'll take the nation back to 70s and 80s, making next decade bloodier than 90s.

And on the day when category five strikes, everyone will forget playing with the little butterflies flapping wings in their back yard.

Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne has been a teacher to me but he is proved to be poor politician with clouded mind. However, still I would like to trust him more than the retired general.

Average Sri Lankans cannot judge or decide properly what they really want; so they deserve to live under MR the betrayer, Ranil the ponnayar or SF the Avatar ( I do not mean the main character of the film avatar, his character is 1000 times better than the general).

I think Sri Lankans should change their political system completely, if they want to succeed.

During 2008 and first half of 2009; I was proud of being a Sri Lankan. I was praising MR, SF, GR and all other civil and military people for their stand against tiger terrorists.

However, what is the situation today? Are we proud anymore about what is going in Sri Lanka?

Why we have to support any MF to rob the country, any more?

What a pathetic situation; preach one but practice another!

Not even the JVP can stomach cutting deals with TNA-Sampanthan faction, but War Hero Sarath Fonseka LOVES them!

----------------------------------
When I criticized JVP in the past people here said that is not right, because if not for them and their patriotic stand, MR wouldn't be elected. Are we still convinced that JVP is patriotic? What a load of crap. I personally believe, the JVP name should be forbidden in SL as they were terrorist organization. Same as LTTE. Current JVP is using the old Terrorist JVP brand name and they should not be allowed to do so.

As people mentioned earlier, after the elections, we should seriously consider removing any party names that are based on race + any LTTE, JVP type terrorist names. Otherwise the job MR/GR started would not be completed.

Rana,
I have been a proud SL since I was born. We had hiccups along the way, but the good thing is SLs are flexible and smart enough to fix their problems. And I am sure most of us in this blog are more than ever optimistic about the future of SL than in the past. Past six months is not the greatest, but after one of the greatest victories we have seen for hundreds of years, there are bound to be few problems. So try be bit optimistic.

This cross-wired-neuron monkey has no democratic base in Sri Lanka other than an insignificant number of equally lunatic supporters. He is already defeated. However, his hatred towards Sri Lanka seems endless. We need to confiscate what ever the Wallawwa he owns in Kandy and turn it to a vacation home for war heroes and their descendants. It is only the forgiveness of Sinhalese that keeps this scum a free man.

The scum who did not hesitate to level allegations against the officers who faithfully executed his commands, has started the baby talk. Such betrayal by a leader is unprecedented in Sri Lankan history. His petty hatred towards he former boss has turned him in to mad man ready to commit acts of treachery against the nation. Association of social cancers like Ranil-Mangala-Mano-Rauf-Anurakumara has turned him in to a social cancer. It is the time for the patriotic masses to give his a high doze of radiation on Jan-26

Ranil wickramasinghe

Having lost the faith of the people of Sri Lanka and patriotic elements within UNP; Ranil Wickramasinghe has started blaming others for his own acts of treachery. It is not the act of signing a CFA that qualifies Ranil Wickramasinghe to be the top scum of Sri Lanka, but signing a CFA with the loop holes for LTTE to violate the spirit of a CFA. Among his top acts of treachery, serving our bravest soldiers heads on silver platters to LTTE, engaging in anti Sri Lankan propaganda in other countries (to prevent us getting financial aid), threatening foreign banks to renege any agreement if he comes to power, insulting achievements of our soldiers, and forming anti Sri Lankan alliances with other top scum Rauf Hakeem, Mano Ganeshan , and Mangala Samaraweera can be foound. This scum bag is a threat to the security of our nation, mainly because he is out of touch with the common Sri Lankan, he will bend over backwards to serve colonial masters, and most importantly he will reduce the UNP to level a level of a minority party. It is the responsibility of the people of Sri Lanka to push this scumbag to a dark corner of SL history.

The below is what he shall get for his acts

People of Sri Lanka
Plaintiff,

vs.

Ranil Wickramasinghe
Defendant.

COMPLAINT

1. Conspiracy by collaborating with white masters to overturn the democratically elected government of Sri Lanka
2. Conspiracy by collaborating with white masters to bring bogus war crime charges against the armed forces of Sri Lanka
3. Espionage by giving national security information to white masters.
4. Treason by trying to give a 1/3rd of land mass of Sri Lanka to terrorist
5. Treason by collaborating with terrorists.
6. Treason by handing over SLA LRRP and MI operatives to LTTE
7. Crimes by attempting to stall economy by choking foreign investments.
8. Crimes by threaning foreign banks to reneg from any financial agreements made by the government if he ever comes to power.
9. Conspiracy by helping white masters in their attempsts to break the backbone of the patriotic core of sri Lanka.

JURY DEMAND

1. Administration of traditional traitor’s punishment at a public square.
2. Life sentence with no parole.
3. Expulsion from Parliament and revocation of civil rights (a trick from the bastard JR Jayawardena)

Further to Ananda USA’s post, here is the video link confirming SF is suffering from a severe case of MPD (multiple personality disorder).
Watch from 01:23. The clip before is interesting too.

We all know that politicians make promises, which they cannot deliver. It happens in SL, UK, USA or any other country, but I have never seen one like SF, who makes mind-boggling statements and changes them within days BEFORE THE ELECTION!

This is like in October 2009 - Obama promising:
The Russians that he will pull out of NATO,
The Mexicans that he will open the USA/Mexico border,

and changing his mind after ten days, BEFORE THE ELECTION!

IS THIS (GUY) THE CHANGE WE NEED?

Indeed, well said MR!!!

This response basically left Sampathan speechless as he quite expected MR to be bribed with the "Jaffna votes" and give into all his separatist-pro LTTE demands.

Of course, then Sampathan left with his head high as he knew the game was still not over as there is this RW/SF traitorous clan still to be baited.

Well did that MF clan ever swallow the bait as we have seen from Gonaseka's statements !!!

MR GOSL must publicize what really happened even if it is done in intervals 24/7 through the state media for the average Sinhalese to know what a rat SF has turned out to be.

In my view, MR side is not aggressive enough in this type of "counter attack" but I am hoping things will go into high gear as we get down to the wire.

[My heart is heavy because we do not have a proper leaders anymore but only cut throat MFs.]

Rana, the Doubting Thomas, then ponders ...

[Questions we need to ask:

1. How Sarath Fonseka managed to give such a close fight to MR at next election?
2. Is he any better than MR?
3. Can we trust him?
4. Why Mahinda is going down in popularity contest?]

Raising questions whether MR is REALLY the right candidate for us!

PURPOSE: Raise doubts about MR, and present SF in a favorable light, not withstanding all of SF's treachery and blunders!

Rana, the astute politician, delivers his assessment ...

[Average Sri Lankans cannot judge or decide properly what they really want; so they deserve to live under MR the betrayer, Ranil the ponnayar or SF the Avatar ( I do not mean the main character of the film avatar, his character is 1000 times better than the general).]

MR, who has conducted himself throughout the period of his presidency as a moral high-principled leader and SAVIOUR of our nation, is now cast as "MR the betrayer" and is lumped with all other bottom dwellers!

PURPOSE: Gradually undermine MR's stature.

Rana, the Sri Lankan voter, now delivers a seminal solution to all of SL's ills ...

[I think Sri Lankans should change their political system completely, if they want to succeed.]

Viola! His end is achieved (or is it EXPOSED).

PURPOSE: Vote for ANYONE but MR in the presidential election, and pave the way for class-warfare under a resurgent JVP!

Conclusion

Rana .. my dear fellow .. you are as TRANSPARENT to us as a clear sheet of glass .. NO MATTER HOW STEALTHILY YOU SPIN YOUR WEB OF LIES!

You are still the devious, unprincipled, unbalanced man you always were, now pretending to be a lukewarm Patriot!

(January 10, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Travel agents in Colombo are reporting brisk trading and high demand for airline tickets from the 20th of January onwards for departures with peak demand on Election Day when not ”the battle of the blues”, but the battle of the “war hero’s” takes place.

We mortals can only wonder in amazement how in a “Buddhist” country, “heroism” is awarded to “dogs of war”. The concept of “War Hero” is irreconcilable with the teachings of the Buddha. But then this land of the Buddha is confusing at most times and at present the outcome of the great contest is anyone’s guess.

On the red corner, weighing in at over 100 kilos is the current undisputed “world” heavy weight champion known as “maharajano” and in the Blue corner, weighing in at 150 kilo’s is the challenger, known as “the cleaner” as he promises to clean up the act including the Presidency.

Ivan, sorry, “Mervin the Terrible” must have sent out his son to get some “Pampers”.

The “Maharajano” won the “world” Heavy weight title in May last year, when he decked the then undefeated Champion, the “Sun God” of VVT, whom some claimed undefeatable.

This is a fight to the death, prisoners will not be taken and you can forget about white flags.

But how the cookie has crumbled since May 2009, such spectacles can only be witnessed in Sri Lanka.

Travel agents in the capital giggle that the “patriots”, “those who love the country” to use the terminology of the incumbent are hurriedly dispatching their families from the 20th onwards and they themselves are taking flight after voting on the big match day.

It seems that they want to watch the result of the great match from afar, just in case “The Cleaner” decks “Maharajano” in the first round.

Meanwhile others on the “those who love the country” gravy train are calling in all their little perks, just in case the “Cleaner” wins the title and kicks them out of the gravy train.

For example, some on the board of Sri Lankan airlines are also at the departure lounge, for the second or third time this month, taking all those free trips to lovely destinations, because if the “Maharajano” is decked, they will lose their jobs and little perks, and the opportunity to live off all their loss making ventures funded by the peasants.

Ananda,

A bull’s eye about this “Rana” !

We need to go back and remember who this sakkili pro-eelamist wesa-balla was:

Here’s what he said in DW in 2008 when we were at a crucial stage in liquidating the LTTE MFs:

[what I meant is, in Sri Lanka, there is no equal rights as at present. That is not guarantee of rights. You may have constitution with all writings but those writings are useless with what is going on their. What I meant is really enforcing the rights wriiten in the constitution by practice. I can be abducted within 15 minutes and die withing couple of hours,]

To which then I said:

Notwithstanding the bad spelling or grammar from this uneducated, gooky son-of-a-whore who always goes to the defense of “wijayapla” aka “tamil racist”…now you be the judge patriots as to who is a patriot and who is not (especially think along the lines of whose writings mirror more closely those of “thamileelam” racists; hint: read the above from this “Rana” !)…

Yes, I heard from "a source" in Colombo that they are investigating all of the HiCorp transactions, including cases where tender laws have been broken and even cases where forgery and false documentation is involved.

However, the more serious offenses are reckoned to have been perpetrated in the US involving forgery, falsifying, and possible money laundering (a very serious offense in the US) and our own CID is now in close cooperation with the US law enforcement auths.

This is a fact.

This is exactly what I said in this very thread earlier @ January 5, 2010 2:56 PM:

For example, I am aware that even 3-wheel drivers in Colombo have been paid lavishly (from the vast contributions SF campaign received from anti-SL elements such as LTTE Diaspora, Norway, etc.) to "bad mouth" MR GOSL to their customers and that program is working quite well as agents from the campaign (unbeknown to the drivers) take hires just to confirm that the drivers are indeed earning their lavish reward.

No I'm not supporting Fonseka but I do not like Mahinda either.

If Mahinda wins then things will not change for the next 6 years very much. Therefore anyone who wants things to be very different should not vote for him.

If Fonseka wins then things will become very chaotic, mostly because Fonseka is unstable but also because his new friends have nothing in common except for hating Mahinda.

If you want stability you should vote for Mahinda.

I am a person who takes things cautiously and a little bit of scepticism.

What has been proved with out a doubt with utmost certainty is that SF is a DEVIL in reincarnation he can devour the whole Nation. We do not need to listen to anybody else, just listen to SF with care. His flip-flops and flop-flips prove who he is. No candidate has ever done so many flip-flopping and flop-flipping. His agenda is just his ego and many other thirsts. To satisfy these traits, he can execute Mother Sri Lanka.

However among many good things, If Mahinda did practice a little bit of prudence (Mervin for example) Mahinda would have won by 80% even without having for him to do any electioneering other than one short TV speech.

However, his love for Nation is clear. His resolution to develop and safeguard Sri Lanka is clear until this moment. He let SF retire. That tells us about his good heart.

As anyone of us he has faults also but he is my choice by light years ahead of anybody at the moment.

One chooses as one pleaeses.

Let it be like that.

However what do you mean by you are not 100% clear.

I am 100% against Mervin.

I am 100% certain that Mahinda is a great leader with some corrupt practices (Mervin etc). At least I know some of the inside story of on incident. Partly innocent partly guilty (MR' side. but I do not know whether MR was directly involved. I know that if he fired Mervin then Still LTTE maybe here since Mangala would have used Mervin and some others to defeat the budget. We do not know the whole story so maybe MR is completely innocent (Maybe he chose to do what was necessary rather than what he wanted to do) in the case of Mervin. Maybe MR is more guilty than what we think. But these things are nothing compared with National security. I put my all eggs on MR's basket on the issue of National security at the Moment. Until now MR has done great. How about tomorrow? I will check it tomorrow but I am reasonably sure he will defend Sri Lanka until he breathes.

I do not believe these SwarnaWahini, Mig deal and other corrupt deals against MR and GR.

But thye choose SF as commander knowing all the facts(They had to know; They should have checked. National security was compromised here. One of SF's lovers could have given information about GR or MR so that they can be murdered. Then they did not act on LW's murder(LW is a LTTE agent-That does not matter in this case). Now Mangala accuse MR on that.

I think MR should not need even to campaign still he would have won by 80%. (My guess is still he would win by a large margin and if SF gets any thing more than 35% that is disappointing. I want SF to get less than 20%. In that case I believe hate politics will be destroyed. If MR really want be Diyasena then he will have the chance. Or he can become JR/CBK..)

I support MR not because I like him because I love my country. I have an immense emotional bond to my country. That is 100%. I think on this issue many of you are 100%.

I have put my case to you. You may take it with a healthy dose of scepticism as I always do.

There was some hint that time that their was a life threat against him and that is why he stayed out for a few days. However, is he was in China partying and shopping with the extended family, then this is very serious. Pretended to be clean Fonseka is a real dirt bag Fonseka after all. Perhaps, our residential multipolar can read this too.

I hope people remember the difficulties caused by SF during the war with the help of his "bokku" kata / mouth. For example, Sri Lanka for Singhalese and minorities have to live with singhalese..etc, etc.

If not MR and others like Dayan J. having handled and damaged controlled all these "buru" katha" we would not have gotten where we got.

But more than anything, all these issues delayed the final out come with additional loss of life for soldiers and effected civilians.

I would not be surprised if SF is the ultimate traitor for Sri Lanka in the pay of foreign masters though out his his life in the SL Army - without anyone knowing anything about it.

correction:
They cannot be fools and they should know how dangerous this man is. They should have more information on him than we do

2. SF might save MR (but not GR) and kill Mangala/Ranil and JVP persoanlities.

They should know it.
(They Mangala/Ranil and others should know that they are promoting a devil.

They may have started to do so thinking that they have the Manthra to control the Devil.
GR and MR made the same mistake. SEE What happened? What was going to happen. I am angry with MR and GR both for creating hero myth for zero. They might have thought that it was part of the manthra. But for super egotistic person that was wrong manthra. When I criticise my Dad it is also a part of my love. So when I criticise MR that is also a part of my affection. For SF I criticise him for fear of the safety of the Nation.

Mangala/Ranil/some JVP by now should have begun to be feeling the danger(they cannot be single-celled brains) they will continue to defend SF for a while. they already fallen out. (Example Lal Kantha).

I hope that they come out and say that directly two days before (by 24 th) the election. Some may be scared to do so because of the fear of his win. Wimal W is taking a serious risk.

I am hopeful. Let us see. The display of Mahinda Chinthanya by Ranil may be some subtle way to save his life, his position in the UNP, as you pointed out but I think Ranil had this idea of defeating SF from the very beginning. If Ranil feels SF is going to win Ranil will indicate where his heart is more directly.

Opposition issued a corruption charge against the incumbent president. Without proving these charges are baseless and in fact government is clean; government uses spin doctors to charge SF is also corrupt.

That makes two corrupt parties which are asking voters to elect them to the highest public office in the country. Both of them are trying to sell war hero image to public in order to grab the power. Voters do not have a real choice.

Mahinda’s patriotic stand against separatists commendable and Sarath’s handshake with eelamists are deplorable. Mahinda should win the election easily. If he cannot, then public is against his unlawful practices.

Either way; I do not think majority of voters can be fooled for long.

My dear Sam, first read the following:

With the chief contenders for the country's most coveted job persisting with their mud-slinging campaigns, it is increasingly apparent that the choice for the people is - as is said pithily in the vernacular -- between a partner who has a cough and a partner who has a cold.
Both contestants are claiming credit for the war victory over the LTTE. The rightful claimant may even be neither; for many would justifiably argue that it was the Defence Secretary who steered the war to its ultimate conclusion with his resoluteness and single- minded determination to see it to a finish. Of course, he is very much in the fray on behalf of his brother, the President.
The war behind us now, questions relating to the restoration of democracy, good governance, transparency, and other such fundamental tenets that make up a modern state are being increasingly debated.
At the root of this exercise is the rebuilding of the institutions, the arteries of the body politic of a nation that have slowly withered away during the turbulent three decades that the country was enveloped by the northern and two southern insurgencies.
During the past several years, regular readers of this space, as well as other media, would have seen the repeated appeals to depoliticise government by rebuilding this institution-based democracy rather than an individual-based democracy.
This is why this appeal should be reiterated during a Presidential election campaign showing up the incumbent for not paying heed to these appeals.
When one looks around the world, it is countries that have strong institutions - a strong and caring Executive; a potent Legislature; an upright Judiciary; an honest Police; a free media; an apolitical Public Service and Armed Forces, not merely as namesake institutions, but vibrant independent bodies, recognizing each other's role - that have flourished. Unfortunately, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has refused to recognize this concept of government.
He has made no excuses for not working towards such a goal arguing at the highest level of national policy making - the Cabinet, that if he is unable to appoint the OIC of the Tangalle Police station, what earthly use is it of him being the President of the Republic.

Even if this argument seems logical, there is the bigger picture which he has refused to see; that an independent Police Commission gives confidence to the policeman to uphold the law of the land irrespective of political considerations, and that when the law is so upheld, it is the citizenry that ultimately benefits. When the Police become an appendage of the ruling party, at least half the country tends to despise what is going on. At the helm, a President tends to get isolated and insulated from such a reality.

to be continued

Rana said...

Over the years, there has been a gradual process of politicisation that has affected the Police and many other institutions established to serve the people in general and not any political party or a President or Minister in particular.
The 17th Amendment to the Constitution was brought in with the unanimous assent of Parliament in a rare show of bipartisanship in 2001 because even legislators had recognised that the very fabric of good governance in Sri Lanka had crumbled and restoration work had to be done.
That process, however flawed the legislation was, at least saw the creation of some of the independent commissions like the Police Commission which restored a semblance of independence to what was increasingly becoming a disgraceful institution reeking with corruption of every kind. But some other independent commissions could not be established because of the intransigence of the then President who saw everything through a political prism. This made it easier for the incumbent President then to circumvent the Constitution and scuttle the entire process, sending the country skidding towards the abyss of one-party rule.
The Elections Commissioner is now under tremendous pressure in the face of accusations that he is not ensuring a free and fair election. For one thing, he has not been given the powers to crack the whip. Take the case of him issuing repeated warnings to the IGP to pull down the cut-outs which are an offence under the law. The letters being duly filed, nothing else has been done. Some OICs under duress or otherwise, flagrantly breach the very law they are expected to uphold by having the offending cut-outs right next to their stations. In such a country, one can hardly say that the spirit of democracy prevails. It is nothing but a façade.
Now come reports that even circulars are being sent telling policemen how to vote. This partisanship has extended to sportsmen, artistes, professionals being forced to back one candidate or the other, and yet, there are those who are expected to be neutral and only cast their vote, secretly. This includes those in the Armed Forces, Police, public servants, the Judiciary

Rana said...

This includes those in the Armed Forces, Police, public servants, the Judiciary and the Elections Office.
As one by one these hallowed traditions fall by the wayside, the credo seems to be 'if you are not with us you are against us'. The only consolation is that we haven't reached the stage like in some so-called democracies where the Elections Commissioner and the Chief Justice also ask the people to vote for a candidate.
What worries the people is whether the challenger to the incumbent will actually restore these institutions to what they were, despite promises to this effect. The voter can be excused for being cynical because recent history is replete with challengers promising to restore democracy and actually turning out to be nastier than their predecessor ever was.

With SF I think, we would be close to what Uganda became- like some others said. All the other contenders in this PE do not have chance and will split the vote to make SF the king maker. They should all get out with out making it worse for Sri Lanka.

Sam,

Now, I will reply to your question:

My exact position as I have said earlier. I am dead against RW and clan but not UNP, JVP or SLFP. I do not trust Sarath Fonseka at all. However, that does not mean I will endorse Mahinda Rajapakhe’s continuation with corrupt practices.
I will agree that Mahinda is the best out of all because most of other candidates are unknown to me. If Mahinda could change positively; he will be my choice without any question. Dr. Wickramabahu K has been known character to me over 04 years and I used to argue with him heavily. I did not agree with him those days and not even today accept his policies but I can vouch you that he is a kind hearted good man with wrong policies.

I hope, the above will help you to understand my position.

For example, not the:

- MiG deal (some MF is not getting his arse sued for bringing slander against Gota for that accusation)

- Tsunami fund (this was taken right up to highest court/enquiry and was dismissed as nothing but a heresay accusation)

Now I am sure there as 100's of other unproven accusations and I expect only a pro-LTTE, pro-eelamist, pro-UriNePee mommafucker would keep harping on like a brain-dead parrot.

Then again...

Which GOSL did we NOT have Corruption???

The difference is:

Previous GOSLs had Corruption as well as the bungled the war (with colossal loss in life and property) with the LTTE whereas this GOSL while having Corruption, liquidated the LTTE mommafuckers - with extreme prejudice I might add.

Why do we need this GOSL for another term?

Simple. Because although the war in SL has been won, the war against the LTTE - and their proxies - abroad has not yet been won.

To let in a weak, pro-LTTE pansy (or Ponsy) govt. at this stage would be disastrous for the nation. That will be taking the country back 30 years.

Not rocket science. Well, unless you are a totally fucked up, rabid pro-eelamist or a blind UriNePeer.

Yes, that is right; we generally don't want "things to change very much for the next 6 years" and generally do want "things to remain stable" politically.

Within such a stable political and stable security environment we would like to achieve the following:

1. Reduce the size of the National Cabinet, and eliminate unnecessary government bureaucracy including the Provincial Government fiefdoms. A National Govt, supported by local District, City, Town and Village administrations are sufficient.

2. Develop & Strengthen the National Economy and the National Infrastructure. Enable a flowering of small and large businesses. The goal is to PROPEL Sri Lanka into the ranks of the Tigers of Asia such as South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan.

3. Strengthen and Develop the Sri Lanka's Defense Forces with a supporting National Guard consisting of all adults able to bear arms. Create a Defense R&D industry geared to fulfilling national needs and meeting costs through weapons exports. Surround the country with a Ran-weta, especially in the North and East. All Security Forces, including the Police and the Coast Guard, SHOULD and MUST remain under the SOLE CONTROL of the National Government.

4. Outlaw all communal and separatist political parties

5. Implement Ethnic Integration throughout the country, and especially in the North & East with the goal of achieving a uniform demographic composition throughout the nation.

6. Develop and maintain strong diplomatic links with powerful allies throughout the world, and especially with rising economies of Asia, South America and Africa.

7. Kick out all iNGOs and local NGOs busily undermining the country

8. Ban All foreign missionary work, and investments linked to religious activism, in Sri Lanka. This is a DISEASE that gradually undermines social cohesion of the nation. Missionaries undermine the nation militarily and interfere in the politics of the nation .. as we see even in the events leading up to this Presidential Election. LET US HAVE NO MORE OF THIS! Religious freedom within the country is only for the citizens; not for foreigners who are trying to undermine it from within under the guise of religious activities.

The Cholas learned that everytime they invaded our country, then the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally the British.

Several Chola armies were massacred by Kings Dutugemunu, Vijayabahu and Prakramabhahu thousands of years ago.

Four Portuguese armies were ANNIHILATED by our Sinhala DEMONS. On one occasion 25 Portuguese were allowed to return to TELL THE TALE with only ONE EYE for EVERY FIVE of THEM to show the way.

The British lost two Armies in Sri Lanka .. cut down to the last man.

Sri Lanka will ALWAYS have us SINHALA YAKAS (DEMONS) here to protect OUR BELOVED MOTHERLAND FOREVER!

Merry-Christmas-Goddamn-You Election-Pledge-List by Sarath Fonsekas makes it to Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not

...........

The dimensions of vishvasability

I am not upset that you lied to me;
I am upset that from now on
I can’t believe you
- Friedrich Nietzsche

Sarath Fonseka’s campaign managers have come up with a unique lubricant: trust. They are getting him to say ‘Trust me, vote for me’. That statement is attended with a merry-Christmas-goddamn-you kind of pledge-list which, even after reading it and shaking it twice leaves you exclaiming ‘what the hell!’ and ‘how the hell!’ Trust. Nice word. Nice feeling. And it is doubtful that you can get more noncommittal than that in politics.

This ‘trust’ business needs to be unravelled a little, but let me first share a couple of emails I got after Fonseka realised his ‘wish-list manifesto’.

“It is difficult to read the pledges in Sarath Fonseka’s manifesto with a straight face. Almost all of them require the Executive Powers he is so keen to abolish within a month of his Presidency. Also, the cost which is astronomical is not considered, and yet he has also pledged to reduce the sources of revenue. Therefore the other alternative is to print money and a certainty for Mugabe type inflation. There is more, too numerous to mention. His manifesto should be named Unvishvasaneeya Venasak venturing into the colloquial.”

I expected more, I must admit, not from Sarath Fonseka or Mangala Samaraweera, but from Wijedasa Rajapaksa, a man we thought was honourable, above petty politics but sadly has now slipped and covered himself with the inevitable mud that clings to personage out of slinging and getting slung. He said ‘it is all based on trust’. No specifics. No details. Just promises. That’s good I suppose if it was a matter of electing the Chairman of a Maranaadhara Samithiya, but not a President. Take a bow, Wijedasa; a bow-out for a bow-wow in case you didn’t get it.

‘Trust in me’ is a nice line. Indeed in certain cases such a line might even work. On the other hand ‘trustworthiness’ is never obtained by statement, it is conferred on account of track-record, statements made, degree of stumble and mumble, company kept, track-records of associates, degree of civility, humility and know-how, and the readiness to lie, to fudge and vilify.

Fonseka has shown that he is a mumbling-stumbling politician in his statements about his son-in-law and arms deals, what he wants to do with the executive Presidency, his state-retract-state juggling with respect to the issue white-flag-surrender and suspicious and worrisome silence on policy issues, the details, the how and the why etc. He has demonstrated that for him ego and revenge matter more than nation and national interest.

He has shown that he can lie without any qualms. He has been charged with gross misconduct while serving as an Army Officer including insinuations of rape. He has shown that he will stand with any fool, traitor and thief in order to win and therefore that he is just another politician and not someone who is worthy of the tag ‘change-candidate’.

Just to remind the reader, here are thumbnail sketches of his ‘friends’. Rauff Hakeem has said that Fonseka has given the TNA the opportunity to take over the administration of their Motherland (no less!) and is described by a Muslim friend thus: he certainly does not speak for a single Muslim I know and is a self-aggrandizing opportunistic twat (ouch!).

Ananda-USA said...

Merry-Christmas-Goddamn-You Election-Pledge-List by Sarath Fonsekas makes it to Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not

....continued.....

R. Sambandan is the leader of the TNA, from inception a proxy for the LTTE and an unrepentant campaigner for division of the country.

Mangala Samaraweera is a political bungler who is also an ardent advocate of federalism and someone who did his utmost to undermine the efforts to rid the country of the terrorist menace. He is known for pilfering public funds to up his ‘quality of life’ in and out of office.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is a despot in the making, having long years of such experience at the help of the UNP and stands charged of rank disregard for ethics pertaining to transparency and accountability within the party.

I almost forgot that he was co-signatory to the Ceasefire Agreement with Prabhakaran and was complicit in the bloodletting and gross crimes against humanity perpetrated in the late eighties.

Sarath N. Silva is perhaps the most vindictive Chief Justice we’ve ever had and has a long track record of being selective and self-seeking in his determinations and the general dispensation of ‘justice’. He is moreover one of the key movers in preventing the implementation of the 17th Amendment.

Tilvin Silva and Anura Kumara Dissanayake are JVPers of the bheeshanaya type, populist, incompetent and ready to compromise principle and ideology for the pettiest of reasons.

Here’s another reader-comment: Dont you think it is rich that the two perpetrators of mass-murder in this country the UNP and the JVP are united on a platform bemoaning violence?

The thing is, General, it is no point pointing fingers at anyone else and saying ‘he lies too and so does he and he and he’. You are not positioning yourself as a lesser liar but an honest man, remember? One slip and you are out. You took a risk General when you claimed, you are, will not and could not slip. You did and thereby disqualified yourself and Wijedasa is not helping you by opting to throw wishy-washy eyewash on the voting public.

Friedrich Nietzsche once lamented thus: I am not upset that you lied to me; I am upset that from now on I can’t believe you. He could have been speaking about Sarath Fonseka. This is the issue about ‘trust’, Mr. Fonseka. You don’t deserve it. And given that you’ve hung your campaign on the issue of ‘trust’, you really don’t have a leg to stand on.

Jan 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa says that all communities are equal to him and that is why he claimed that there are no minorities in the country.

Addressing a large gathering of Muslims from various parts of the country at the Temple Trees yesterday, the President said that he has already completed building an independent country where all communities can live in unity.

The President told the gathering that certain groups are trying to create rifts between the Muslim and Tamil communities for political mileage and he would not allow any one to destabilize the country by creating rifts between its people.

A group of Muslim girls traditionally welcomed the President throwing flowers and the Muslim Community Leaders presenting a memento felicitated the President for his leadership.

Jan 10, Colombo: Mangala Samaraweera, one of the spokesmen and a founder members who set up opposition alliance for backing retired General Sarath Fonseka at January 26th election, has reportedly stepped back from the campaign due to differences of opinions.

Reportedly MP Mangala Samaraweera who has critical political views on Tamil National Alliance's pro-LTTE policies has blamed the opposition United National Party (UNP) for damaging General Fonseka's bid for the presidency by entering into a controversial agreement with TNA few days ago.

"Now government can clearly show to the public that General Fonseka has close-link with Pro-LTTE political parties in this election," he reportedly has said.

He is also disappointed over the contents of the controversial agreement, a close political aid of Samaraweera told ColomboPage.

"I wasn't even informed about this agreement which was signed in UNP MP Ravi Karunanayaka's residence in Colombo where UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe too participated," MP Samaraweera has complained.

Mangala Samaraweera apparently has not participated in election rallies held last few days to support retired General Fonseka and even has refrained himself from organizing daily press conferences in Colombo.

Great Power Confrontation in the Indian Ocean: The Geo-Politics of the Sri Lankan Civil War

By Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya
GlobalResearch.ca
October 23, 2009

The support and positions of various foreign governments in regards to the diabolic fighting between the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan military, which cost the lives of thousands of innocent civilians, says a great deal about the geo-strategic interests of these foreign governments. The position of the governments of India and a group of states that can collectively be called the Periphery, such as the U.S. and Australia, were in support of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) or Tamil Tigers, either overtly or covertly. Many of these governments also provided this support tacitly, so as not to close any future opportunity of co-opting Sri Lanka after the fighting was over.

In contrast, the governments of a group of states that can jointly be called Eurasia as a collective entity, such as Iran and Russia, supported the Sri Lankan government. The polar nature of the support by Eurasia and the Periphery for the two different combating sides in the Sri Lankan Civil War betrays the scent or odour of a much broader struggle. This is a struugle that extends far beyond the borders of the island of Sri Lanka and its region.

Why is this so? Much of the answer to such a question has to do with the formation of a growing alliance in the Eurasian landmass against the international domination of the U.S. and its allies. This Eurasian alliance was formed on the basis of the growing cohesion between Moscow, Tehran, Beijing, and their allies that has seen the animation of the Primakov Doctrine. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a security body with real military dimensions that has been called “the NATO of the East” within some foreign policy circles is a real symbol of this geo-political dynamic. In 2009, the last chapter of the Sri Lankan Civil War was very much a theatre within this process.

Enter the Chinese Dragon: The start of Sri Lankan Estrangement from the U.S. and India

2007 was a milestone year for Sri Lanka. On March 12, 2007, Colombo agreed to allow the Chinese to build a massive naval port on its territory, at Hambantota. An agreement on the construction of the port was finalized and signed by the Sri Lankan Port Authority with two Chinese companies, the China Harbor Engineering Company and the Sino Hydo Corporation. [1] The Sri Lankan government’s decision was mostly formed on the basis of economic benefits and Chinese support to end the fighting on their island.

What followed was the estrangement of Sri Lanka from the U.S. and India. It has been a U.S. policy to encircle China and to prevent it from building any ports or bases outside of Chinese territory. As a result, the U.S. shortly cut its military assistance to the Sri Lankan military. [2] Indian support for the Tamil Tigers also increased through pressure on Colombo to make Sri Lanka a federal state with autonomy for the Tamils. Beijing threw its political weight behind Colombo and also began sending large arms shipments to Sri Lanka. As an additional comparison, Chinese aid to Sri Lanka in 2008 was about a billion U.S. dollars, while U.S. aid was only 7.4 million U.S. dollars. [3]

It is from 2007 onward that Sri Lanka became a part of the alliance in Eurasia through its agreement with China and its subsequent estrangement from the U.S. and India. By the end of 2007, Sri Lanka had entrenched itself in the geo-strategic trenches with Russia, Iran, and China. These reasons and not humanitarian concern(s) are the primary rationale for support provided, in one way or another, to the Tamil Tigers by the governments of India, the U.S., Britain, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the European Union.

Great Power Confrontation in the Indian Ocean: The Geo-Politics of the Sri Lankan Civil War

....continued 1 ...

Sri Lankan Military ties to the Moscow-Beijing-Tehran Axis

Chinese military ties with Sri Lanka started in the 1990s, but it was in 2007 that Chinese and Sri Lankan military relations started to flower. According to Brahma Chellaney of the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi, India: “China’s arms sales [were] the decisive factor in ending the military stalemate [in the Sri Lankan Civil War.]” [4] In April, just one month after the 2007 agreement between the Sri Lankan Port Authority and both the China Harbor Engineering Company and the Sino Hydo Corporation, China signed a major ammunition and ordnance deal with the Sri Lankan military. [5] Beijing also transferred, free of charge, several military jets to the Sri Lankan military, which were decisive in defeating the Tamil Tigers. [6]

Iran and Russia also began to rapidly develop their military ties with Sri Lanka after Colombo agreed to host the Chinese port in Hambantota. In this regard, Beijing, Moscow, and Tehran all have cooperation and military agreements with Sri Lanka. The visits of Sri Lankan leaders and military officials to Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing in 2007 and 2008 were all tied to Sri Lankan preparations to militarily disarm the Tamil Tigers with the help of these Eurasian states.

China, Russia, and Iran all ultimately helped arm the Sri Lankan military before the last phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War. For the Eurasian alliance the aim of ending the Sri Lankan Civil War was to ensure the materialization of the Chinese port and to prevent any possibility of regime change in Colombo, which would ensure the continuity of a Sri Lankan government allied to China, Russia, and Iran. Along with Sri Lankan officials, the governments of Iran, Russia, and China believed that unless the Tamil Tigers were neutralized as a threat that the U.S. and its allies, in possible league with India, could make attempts to overthrow the Sri Lankan government in order to nullify the Sri Lankan naval port agreement with China and to remove Sri Lanka from the orbit of Eurasia. In this context, they all threw their weight behind Sri Lanka during the fighting in 2009 and in the case of China and Russia at the U.N. Security Council.

Great Power Confrontation in the Indian Ocean: The Geo-Politics of the Sri Lankan Civil War

....continued 2 ...

Associated Press (AP) reported on December 23, 2007:

In the wake of the United States Senate slashing military assistance to Sri Lanka, the Russian Federation has stepped in to fill the vacuum, sending the first ever top level military delegation to Colombo to discuss military cooperation. A high level Russian military delegation led by [Colonel-General] Vladimir Moltenskoy last week met Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Army Commander [Lieutenant-General] Sarath Fonseka and Air Force Commander, Roshan Goonathilake and had visited several major military installations in the island. [Colonel-General] Molpenskoy, a veteran combat General in the Russian Army was formerly the operational commander of the Russian Forces in Chechnya. [7]

The Russian Federation, China, and Iran also all face their own separatist movements like Sri Lanka. All four nations see these movements as being supported by outside players for geo-strategic reasons. In 2007, not only did Moscow, like China, move in to fill the vacuum of military supplies left by the U.S. government after Sri Lanka agreed to build the Chinese naval port; the Kremlin also sent Colonel-General Vladimir Moltenskoy who oversaw the Russian military campaign against the separatist movement in Chechnya. Moltenskoy arrived in Sri Lanka as a military advisor to Colombo.

The aid of Tehran was also crucial for the Sri Lankan military. The Island, a Sri Lankan news source reported: “Iran had come to Sri Lanka’s rescue (...) when an LTTE [or Tamil Tiger] offensive had threatened to overwhelm the [Sri Lankan] army in Jaffna [P]eninsula. Sources said that several plane loads of Iranian [military] equipment were made available immediately after Sri Lanka sought assistance from the Iranian leadership.” [8] The Island also reported, before the arrival of a high level Iranian military delegation to Sri Lanka in 2009, that Iran, which is “widely believed to [sic.; be] a leading strategist in” the use of tactical boats, and Sri Lanka “have over the year developed strategies relating to small [tactical] boat operations.” [9]

The extent of the help Iran, Russia, and China provided to Sri Lanka also included economic support within the framework of the Sri Lankan military preparations leading to the assaults on the Tamil Tigers in 2009. The Hindu on September 21, 2009 published an article partially revealing the depth of the level and importance of the help that Sri Lanka had been receiving from Iran alone:

Iran has extended by another year the four-month interest-free credit facility granted to Sri Lanka after President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to Iran in November 2007, state-run Daily News reported on Monday.

It said that consequent to talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian government granted the facility from January 2008 to August 31.

In 2008, Sri Lanka imported crude oil under this facility to the tune of $1.05 billion, nearly all of its requirements, easing the pressure on the country’s foreign exchange requirements in a year of significance for the government’s war with the LTTE [or the Tamil Tigers].

An additional three-month credit package at a concessionary rate of interest was also accommodated in Sri Lanka’s favour on September 3 [2009] at a meeting between the representatives of the countries in Tehran. [10]

Chinese Naval Interests and Energy Security Concerns and Sri Lanka

Why a Chinese port in Sri Lanka? Why in Sri Lanka of all places? Sri Lanka is situated at a vital maritime corridor in the Indian Ocean. This position is at a vital juncture in the maritime shipping paths of the Indian Ocean that is important for trade, security, and energy supplies. This is why Moscow, Tehran, and Beijing stand behind Colombo.

The Chinese naval port under construction and at Hambantota is part of a New Cold War to secure energy routes. [11] Most of the energy supplies going to Asia pass the southern tip of Sri Lanka. It is for this reason that the Chinese have included Sri Lanka within their project of establishing a chain of naval bases in the Indian Ocean to protect their energy supplies coming from the Middle East and Africa. Myanmar (Burma) is also part of this project and in many cases the pressure on the governments in both states is linked to their agreements to build Chinese ports with Beijing.

In league with China, Iran also has naval ambitions in Sri Lanka and the broader Indian Ocean as part of an initiative to protect the maritime routes between itself and China. China and Iran have both been expanding their naval forces. This is part of a growing trend. The seas and bodies of water around all Eurasia from the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Persian Gulf, and the the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea, and the East China Sea have all been under heavy militarization over the years. In no point in history have the oceans seen such large numbers of warships at one time. This militarization process on the waves of Eurasia is ultimately tied to controlling movement and encircling the Eurasian landmass in a coming showdown.

Sri Lanka enters the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)

In 2009, Sri Lanka joined the SCO, as did Belarus. The entry of Sri Lanka into the Eurasian organization was announced at the SCO conference in Yekaterinburg, where the light was on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad following the election riots in Iran. While the SCO put its weight behind the re-election of the Iranian President, Sri Lanka thanked the organization for its collective support against the Tamil Tigers.

Both Sri Lanka and Belarus, which is also a member of the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), entered the SCO as dialogue partners. [12] The entry of Sri Lanka into the SCO as a dialogue partner confirms its strategic ties and alliance with Russia, China, and Iran. Dialogue partner status in the SCO puts Sri Lanka under the umbrella of China and Russia. Although it is not spelled out in Article 14 of the SCO Charter, a dialogue partner can request protection and defensive aid under such a relationship. Dialogue partners are also financially tied to the SCO, which facilitates their integration into the coming Eurasian Union that will emerge from the cohesion of Russia, China, Iran, and their partners.

Great Power Confrontation in the Indian Ocean: The Geo-Politics of the Sri Lankan Civil War

....continued 4 ...

Sri Lanka and the Broader Conflict in Eurasia

In the so-called Western World double-standards were applied to the final chapter of the Sri Lankan Civil War. While the U.S. and its allies supported the military actions of Georgia to secure its territorial integrity by bringing South Ossetia and Abkhazia under its control through force in 2008 they did not do this in regards to Sri Lanka in 2009. In essence the actions of the Sri Lankan and Georgian governments were almost exactly the same: establishing government control of break-away territory through the use of military force. Yet, the reaction of the U.S. and its allies were contrastingly different in both cases. Georgia received support and Sri Lanka did not.

In addition, Georgia was legally obligated under international agreement not to use any military force to solve its internal conflict, but Sri Lanka was not. In legal terms, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, before the conflict, also enjoyed autonomous statuses within the framework of Georgia as a polity. This in no means justifies any of the deaths in Sri Lanka or the fighting in Georgia, but it does illustrate that double-standards were applied.

The reason that the U.S. and its allies supported Georgia and not Sri Lanka is tied to the encirclement of Eurasia. If there was no Chinese port being built in Sri Lanka or any ties between the Sri Lankan government and China the reaction of the U.S. government would have been much different. Most probably the American reaction would have been the same as when Israel acts against Palestinian civilians or when Saddam Hussein, as an American ally, gased the Iraqi Kurds.

The people of Sri Lanka from the Tamils to the Sinhalese are in the cross-hairs of a much larger and all enveloping global struggle. In the scenario of a possible conflict with the U.S. and the Periphery the maritime route that passes by Sri Lanka would be vital as an energy lifeline to the Chinese. The U.S. and its allies would ensure that this sea route is less secure for the Chinese by taking Sri Lanka out of the orbit of China and its allies. Even the balkanization of Sri Lanka could lead to a Tamil state that would most likely be allied to the U.S. and India, which may grant them military bases that would be in close proximity to Chinese positions in Sri Lanka.

Patriots,

I urge you to read the article I posted above on Great Power Competition in the Indian Ocean Region.

I quote in particular,

"It is from 2007 onward that Sri Lanka became a part of the alliance in Eurasia through its agreement with China and its subsequent estrangement from the U.S. and India. By the end of 2007, Sri Lanka had entrenched itself in the geo-strategic trenches with Russia, Iran, and China. These reasons and not humanitarian concern(s) are the primary rationale for support provided, in one way or another, to the Tamil Tigers by the governments of India, the U.S., Britain, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the European Union."

which reveals, in large measure, why and how the anti-terrorism champions of the West came to support the LTTE terrorists in the Balkanization of the "fellow democracy" of Sri Lanka.

Global politics of great powers only depends ONLY ON WHOSE OX IS BEING GORED AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

The sooner Sri Lanka recognizes and accepts that REALITY, and prepares to cope with it by setting its own house in order, the better equipped it will be to SURVIVE AS A NATION in the future.

We would be well advised to heed the ancient dictum "IF YOU DESIRE PEACE, PREPARE FOR WAR!"

I agree with this on the condition that unethical conversions such as converting little children is stopped. A grown up adult embracing a region is not a problem but converting children is a crime.

Not only children, but people who are gullibale, and uneducated. Aggressive missionary work whether it is coming from Buddhist, Muslims or Christian religions it is not a good than and cause lot of friction among communities.

I agree with Ananda's statement. There should not be large scale missionary work in our countries. Most of the developed nations does not have too much missionary work. It would be the same for developing nations.

What happens is lot of organizations help poor people and they try to convert people to what ever religion they are. That must be forbidden.

In the west people are moving away from religions. Therefore there is no reason to try an convert people in Asia to fill that gap. Right now, what is good to have is for people to learn about all religions and to respect them. If they wish to go for one religion than another, it should be done through their own free will and not through influence by priests.

If this is true, then these are the things that I was expecting. He has no discipline or character. It has to come out.

Now to save their lives, Mangala and Ranil should appeal to the voters to abandon SF.

A decent UNP politician who was in Parliament during the IPKF agreement time resigned from the Parliament protesting against IPKF agreement. Since then he has not been involved in politics. Then in 2005, he was invited to support MR by both GR and MR. He refused but has voted MR.

Ten months ago when I met him in my home he told me some stories about Ranil being a underhanded person and MR being humane and compassionate person.

This time, because of hid for SF coming to power he has distributed a leaflet and done a poster against SF expenses paid by him. This he does because he wants to stop SF coming to power, not for any other benefit.

Also, he has found wide spread overwhelming support for his area, I have been told. Also according to him, only JVP works for SF. UNP effort does not exist in some areas and some other areas it is not a huge effort by UNP. There may be areas where big effort exists.

The support visible in city areas are due to vociferous nature of JVP campaign and some other dirty tricks, like paid shouting, I have been told. (I did not talk to him this time, Only his sister talked to me. A big UNP person, but voting MR.)

It seems like that devilish nature of SF is well known. The former MP has said that SF is a violent racist and through out the war SF has given wrong orders. SF enjoys seeing blood.

He is hopeful that even the current level of support of SF will come down drastically.

Sri Lanka President pledges to create an efficient and developed country devoid of corruption

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that he only has one goal for the next term and that is to create an efficient and a developed country devoid of corruption and fraud for the future generation that would be the zenith of Asia.

Unveiling his manifesto titled "Mahinda Chinthana - Extended Version" to a packed audience of Maha Sangha, other religious dignitaries, Ministers, political leaders, diplomats, and media at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo this morning, the President said the government has declared the present decade as the development decade, with the objective of ushering a bright future to the people.

Addressing the crowd amid thunderous applause the President said it is no secret today that the people on this sq km. 65,610 land live in pride and freedom. His government has taken great measures to protect that hard-earned freedom and he would not allow anyone to betray the nation, he said.

"There is not a single letter in this manifesto that betrays the nation," he said.

When he faced the election in 2005, the people were mentally subdued and the future was bleak as they were constantly told by the then rulers the war is unwinnable.

Today the map of the country is different, the roads are paved, jungles are cleared, five international level harbors are being built around the country and the country's second international airport is being constructed, the President said pointing out that with these developments there is no need for any new developments, but only upgrades to the existing facilities.

The World's most ruthless terrorist Tigers are finished but the forces that supported them are trying to resurrect the organization to pave the way for Eelam, he said.

"But I am certain that the people of this country would help us to defeat those forces on the 26th," the President said adding that any cross for the betel leaf is a cross to save the country from those forces.

He said he only had four years and except for 8 months, he had to face a war with the most dangerous terrorist outfit of the world and face the pressures from the international forces that supported them. He was able to overcome all these challenges and to bestow upon the masses not only an honorable peace but also an honorable way of living, the President said.

President Rajapaksa said in his next term he hopes to develop the country to be the most vibrant nation in Asia.

President Rajapaksa urged the people to end the era of politicians promising food and beverages and clothing and think long term developments, education, employment, and opportunities for a society built on compassion instead of hatred, recognition instead of revenge, truth instead of fallacy, and development instead of destruction.

"Don't forget that our youth defeated the most dangerous terrorist of the world and that youth can make this country the center of Asia," he told the crowd.

TEN Reasons why Gen. Sarath Fonseka should be the Next President of Sri Lanka
1. HE IS CLEVER: Gen. Fonseka started at the lowest ranks of the army and rose to the very top. Then he ended a 30 year long ‘unending’ war. Need I say more?
If he is so clever why did he joined politicians who were thrown to the histories garbage bin?
It is well known that Ranil W wanted to avoid running this election as he is sure to loose and that means him loosing the party leadership and retiring from politics, he wanted a scape goat to run this time so he can hold on to his leasership and run in 2016 when Mahinda R will not be running and he has a better chance of winning, looks like clever Fonseka played right into stupid Ranil’s hands.
During the time the war was raging, and Tamil Nadu was protesting against it Fonseka stated that Tamilnadu politician’s are jokers, this made the diplomatic relations a nightmare and handing the politics of war very difficult. Where was clever Fonseka at that time.
If he is so clever why dindt he talk to Navy commander directly during the security concil meetings during the war.
It is well known that Fonseka commanded two operation across Muhamali-Nagar kovil line, without informing the national security hierach, no navy or air force or even then CDS was infomed both these operations resulted debacles costing lives and hardware to the military and no support from Navy or air force even to evaculate the wounded was prepared. Where was clever fonseka?

2. HE IS HONEST: Having led the army when it did procurements of unprecedented levels, Gen. Fonseka could have made fortunes for seven more generations, even with 1% cuts. He did not. All he owned at retirement were a 15 perch land at Bokundara, Piliyandala with a house – that cost LKR 1.2 million for construction, a Mercedes Benz, and LKR 641,000 in bank. His wife has bank balances of LKR 23,307 and USD 2,952 and jewelry worth a little more than LKR 1.6 million. He is much poorer than Wimal Weerawansa, MP.

We know that his daugters have been studying in USA even before he got his green card. Undergard education in USA is very expensive, that average tution fees alone for an international undergard student for a semester is $10 000 minimum living costs for 4 months would be $ 4000 even if they didn’t study in summer this means more than $ 50 000 for a year for the two daughers. Where did the money come from?
To get admitted to US universites and to get the visa you need to prove that you can pay the money at least for a year. If he has only Rs 7 laks where did he show Rs 50 laks from? Who is dishonest here?

3. HE DOES NOT MAKE UNREALISTIC PROMISES: Voters, more than anything else, hate corrupt politicians who promise sun and moon but deliver stars. Gen. Fonseka is different. He is radically practical. Not the typical politician who robs the votes by exploiting the gullible.

He promised a Rs 10 000 pay hike for government workers, more funds for “Samurdhi” recipients, compensation to the fullest for the Golden Key investors. Ranjith Siyabalapitiy said you need an additional Rs289 billion to fund these projects? Where is he getting the money from? How realistic are those promises?

දේශපාලුවා said...

දේශපාලුවා said...

4. HE INTENTIONS ARE NOT TO SERVE HIS FAMILY: Let us not kid ourselves. Why Rajapakse wants power? To make his family grew further – bigger and more powerful. Perhaps he wants to make his family the richest in South Asia. Aren’t we tired of this kind of petty politics? Isn’t this the time to give a chance for somebody who thinks about the country before himself?

Lets not kid ourselves, Sri Lankan commandoes are living in USA providing security to his daughters and son in law, Sri Lankan tax payers money is spent on these peoples salaries and other compensations accommodation etc.
It was revealed in the parlimet that Fonsekas sat on tender bords where is son in law’s company was bidding and tenders were offered to this company even when that was they had the highest bid.
When asked directly on this matter Fonseka babbled and provided contradictory answers at differet times , first he said nothing was bought then he said certain items were bought from this comapy.
He is trying hard to conceal his family business and unethical dealings?
We all know that Fonseka was not present in Sri Lanka during the last days of war. He and his family and his son in law was in China on a trip organized by the Chinese wepons giant Norinko. The trip included visiting weapons factories, and other tourists venues. Obtaing favours from a company that deal with the office that you supervise and with your son in laws company, what kind of a family business is this?

5. HE KNOWS THE PULSE OF THE PEOPLE: Ever heard of a national level politician who could row a canoe? This is real Sarath Fonseka, without his uniform. The simple villager, not a “Walawve Hamu”. He knows the problems of the masses better than anyone else – as he is one of them.

Is this why he bought a house in Colombo-7 reid avenue? Is this why he bought a luxury Benz car? Is this why his daughters are studying in USA? Does he think that Sri Lankan universites are not good enough for his daughters?

6. HE REPRESENTS A NATION, NOT A SINGLE RACE: Can Rajapakse ever say he represents Tamils, or in that case even Muslims? Rajapakse’s JHU supported Peoples’ Alliance represents only the extreme Sinhala Buddhists – not even moderate Sinhalese. On the contrary, Gen. Fonseka’s United National Front, true to its name, represents all ethnic communities at the top level. He will be the only leader capable of uniting this divided land.

In 2008sep , during and interview with Canadian national post he said Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese and minorities should understand this situation. How is this statement going to bring racial harmony?

7. HE IS FOCUSSED: Winning a war is not an easy game. That needs focus. The Indian National Security Advisor M. K. Narayanan to described Gen. Sarath Fonseka as the “Best Army Commander in the world”. Why not utilise that kind of focus to develop this country?

His arrogance and self centeredness led the army to two debacles across the muhamalai line, where was his focus at that time?

දේශපාලුවා said...

8. HE DOES NOT RUN AWAY FROM CHALLENGES: We all know who left forces, ran away and took USA citizenship in the middle of war. On the other hand, Gen.. Fonseka, ignoring the retirement option, after his fatal injuries from an LTTE suicide attack returned, took the leadership and ended the war for the country. Shouldn’t that kind of leaders we need for this country?

There is documented evidence that he ordered the army to retreat during the elephantpass debacle in 2000. It was a politician who went to Jaffna and reversed the SLA retreat.

9. HE IS ABOVE POLITICS: Unlike Rajapakse, who is still very much within the political game (and thus not approved by nearly half of the country) Gen. Fonseka is above politics. He is not a candidate of this part or that party. He will unite the entire nation under a single flag.
There is no democracy in this world without political parties, political parties are a main pillar of democracy. Only in dictatorships and military rules you find no political parties? He he going to lead us to an apolitical militarty rule?
10. HE HAS DONE HIS PART FOR THE COUNTRY: No two words about it. He nearly paid the supreme price for serving his motherland. Isn’t this the opportunity to show our gratitude?
So have I, and still doing, and my parents, my teachers and my of my friends.
Pls call your mother, father, sisters and brothers, relatives and friends in Sri Lanka! Ask them to vote for Sarath Fonseka .

what nonsense!

IF true that means on average 920 billion a year which is not true. the HIGHEST ever we spent was 177 billion in 2008/09.

even if you add the destruction caused by war it cannot be 920 billion a year. but he only stated the govt SPEND.

even if you add time value of money it cannot exceed 5 trillion.

another way to disapprove this...

SL's GDP in 2009 = 3 trillion rupees
SL's GDP in 1983 = 1 trillion rupees

average = 2 trillion rupees
for 25 years = 50 trillion rupees

23 trillion out of 50 trillion = a FCUKING 46% OF GDP ON WAR!!

complete bullshit.

The other is http://www.digathanews.com/index.php/component/poll/15-who-will-be-the-next-president-of-sri-lanka
Mahinda votes 574 – 32.1%
Sarath votes 1171 – 65.6%
Wickramab votes 33 – 1.8%
Others votes 8 - 0.4%

Both polls show land slide victory for General Sarath Fonseka!

I wonder why? Is Mahinda in trouble? Sri Lankan voters usually dislike incumbent and like to trust fresh blood.
Mahinda is having too many aggressive supporters who violate election laws, force sportsmen, actors and actresses to openly support Mahinda. This can backfire badely.
Actions of Hudson Samarasinghe to use SLBC and Rupavaahini for election propaganda work, police not removing Mahinda cut outs but remove other cut outs, Lasantha Wickramathunga death anniversary, Mervin’s bad mouth, Namal’s various acts and Anarkalee’s BS talk, Basil’s corruption acts and ITN shunning “PABA” actress are few things that may severely affect Mahinda’s campaign.
This is not good; Mahinda should wake up before it is too late.

Abuse and Misuse of public funds – part 1

(January 07, Colombo - Lanka Polity) A written complaint lodged by the All Sri Lanka Harbor Workers' Common Union leader Chandrasiri Mahagamage before the Election Commissioner points to shocking revelation of blatant misuse of public property for the presidential campaign of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The Minister in charge of the Ports Authority is Chamal Rajapaksa, the elder brother of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The complainers say that 300 workers and 70 vehicles of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority have been deployed in presidential propaganda and election violence. The union has exposed the names of the employees and the numbers of the vehicles.

The personnel have been stationed in three places in Colombo, Embilipitiya in south and Dambulla in north for election operations.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is using or rather misusing the platforms of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority for his rallies. Ports Authority employees have been deployed in erecting the stages with overtime and bata allowances violating the election laws, the union points out.

Abuse and Misuse of public funds – part 2

The President has not spared a single pebble unmoved in the state sector in a tough presidential battle with his ex-Army chief Sarath Fonseka. Senior public servants like his powerful brother defense secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who has no right for party politics due to his public-paid position is also running a series of seminars in support of his brother blatantly violating the election laws and the establishment code of the public service. Even the President's Secretary, a senior civil servant is also talking in public in support of Rajapaksa. Thousands of people are summoned to a massive tent set up in the Prime Minister's place now he occupies for meetings and they are treated with food and beverages. Nobody knows who bears the costs as the government says no public funds are used for them.

On the New Year eve, the President delivered an SMS to all 12 million mobile phone users via the service providers. Many identified the act as an infringement of the privacy of the phone users and the President's unauthorized New Year greeting finally turned to be a spam.

The use of pubic media for the President's propaganda and for slinging mud at his major opponent was so irresistible to the Election Commissioner and he took measures to ban five programmes of state TV for its notorious content.

Police also came under criticism of the Election Commissioner for not removing the illegal mega billboards with the images of the President at every nook and corner of the island.

i'm sure the UNELECTED general's MISUSE of public funds (vehicles, bodyguards, planes, helicopters, army personnel, etc.) comes close to the example given!!

so none is better if misuse is considered.

also note that ponseka CANNOT use other resources not that he WILLINGLY does not use them. if the bugger can misuse them, bugger will.

Mahinda should win the election by a fair fight; he can do it without resorting to aggressive methods and violence. Otherwise he is only scoring for opposition. Sarath Fonseka’s popularity gain is directly link to Mahinda’s cahoots election madness.

[Both polls show land slide victory for General Sarath Fonseka!]

BS! I can setup any number of "polls" that will show that Mahinda Rajapaksa will win by a LANDSLIDE.

If I setup the poll on my server, I can fudge the numbers.

If I use a independent poll server, I can setup the settings to take multiple submissions from selected admins.

If I correctly setup a toally independent server, I can advertise it only to my good pals and skew the poll.

I can even setup 2,000 email addresses and use them manually, or under program control, to produce any result I want.

Even the poll we have at the Sri Lanka Defence Forum site is not truly representative, as most bloggers here are Patriots leaning towards MR.

So .. my dear chap .. those polls mean EXACTLY NOTHING.

Only ONE POLL will tell the tale .. the ELECTION on January 26th!

/TEN Reasons why Gen. Sarath Fonseka should be the Next President of Sri Lanka/

How come Gonseka camp missed the best reason - has gonorrhea

Moshe Dyan said...

i think ponseka's election campaign is now going in the REVERSE GEAR.

1. running away from the corruption debate convinced many undecided voters that ponseka is CORRUPT.

2. ponseka campaign was run by JVP and mongal. ponseka's public face was JVP and mongal.

UNP kept away from it from the start.

now JVP is the SOLE PUBLIC FACE of ponseka!!

traditional UNPers, muslim congress/CWC/mano/TNA voters HATE the JVP, especially AN-URA KUMARA.

the REAL IMPACT of this disaster will be seen in a few days time.

3. MOST traditional tamil and muslim UNP voters are UTTERLY DISGUSTED for having a war monger as the candidate. they have decided not to vote for ponseka.

4. ranil want ponseka to LOSE. for ranil UNP leadership is more important than winning.

if ponseka wins ranil loses UNP leadership.

5. BIGGEST UNP election guns have gone silent.

e.g.
sonali
sunday leader
pakayasotti
piece NGOs

6. unemployed JVP idiots are taken in buses around the country with free food, arrack, peanuts, pocket money and red flags.

they are the BULK in ponseka's rallies.

7. expect a BIGGER fallout a week b4 the election when TNA-LTTE agreement, randy-hicorp firsthand corruption details, lasantha/MTV, sexual misconduct, etc. come out.

8. ponseka's defeat frustration is all too OBVIOUS. he used filth and blasted PISSA ATTANAYAKE, MONGAL, DAYASIRI, RANIL, etc. more of this nonsense to come.

9. MR is undercutting ponseka's vote relevant promises to TNA. tamil ppl in the north don't care about tamil elam, merger, etc.

10. SB got the highest number of votes in ANY election in the past 9 years. 4th highest ever in history???

GOSL listens to us: Sri Lanka to have a CENSUS in 2011
..............

Sri Lanka to conduct census on its population next year

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka will conduct its 14th census on population in 2011, the Department of Census and Statistics says. The 13th census of the series was conducted on the 17th of July 2001.

According Director General of the Department Mrs. Suranjana Vidyaratne, the mapping of land is now being conducted on the Grama Seva Division level and 90 percent of work has already been completed in areas other than in the North and East.

The census in the North and East is conducted after a lapse of 30 years. The mapping of the North and East is to be completed before next March.

Marking of numbers on houses and buildings will be conducted based on the mapping in the first month of next year.

The objectives of mapping and listing operations are to ensure that all building unitsare covered in the country without any omission or duplication.

The census is conducted every ten years since 1871 with some exceptions. The last census was carried out only in 18 out of 25 districts due to the conflict in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

The Director General says that around 1.4 billion rupees are expected to be spent on the census, which is to be conducted using latest technology.

Corruption issue boomerangs

It was just last Friday that the morning newspapers published General Fonseka’s ten point election manifesto. However, before midnight on the same day the Fonseka camp had violated the first two pledges in their own manifesto in the most embarrassingly obvious manner in front of the whole nation.

The very first pledge in the Fonseka manifesto relates to ‘Restoring democracy and winning the peace’. Under this section, a matter which has been given the same priority as the abolition of the executive presidency is the freedom of information. Fonseka’s manifesto says that within one month of being elected president, a cabinet paper for a Freedom of Information Act will be placed before the cabinet. The second pledge on Fonseka’s manifesto relates to eradicating corruption. The whole of the last week, Swarnavahini had been advertising a debate on Friday night between the government and the joint opposition on the question whether Sarath Fonseka in his days as the army commander was responsible for any crooked arms deals as was alleged by the government or not.

Instead of a debate what we saw on Friday night on Swarnavahini was something unprecedented in TV broadcasting since J.R.Jayewardene introduced television to Sri Lanka. For nearly two hours, the opposition representative Dayasiri Jayasekera ran round and round in circles, refusing to debate the point he had come to debate. Dayasiri Jayasekera filibustered and left, without debating anything. Minister Rajitha Senaratne who represented the government repeatedly kept saying that the opposition had tried to prevent the debate from being held at all on the pretext that the matter was before courts, and that the opposition had sent a lawyer to Swarnavahini to stress the point. Jayasekera did not deny this and neither did the Swarnavahini moderator. The fact that the joint opposition tried to prevent the debate from taking place at all by raising legalistic objections and when that failed, filibustering and refusing to debate the issue is a damning indictment. Thus the joint opposition has ended up blatantly violating the right of the public to information and seriously compromised their own anti-corruption credentials.

Fonseka's arms deals

A day or two before this much touted debate, on Wednesday or Thursday last week, a two page document appeared in the newsrooms of various media organizations including ours. One page of this document contained the booking manifest for a party of Sri Lankans at the Fujitsu Royal Hotel in Beijing for Rooms No: 1620, 1630, 1620A, 1618, 1519, 1521, 1626, and 1628. The other page contained an itinerary for a party of Sri Lankans hosted by a Chinese company called NORINCO. This company’s line of business was not disclosed in the documents. The party hosted by this company included a VVIP, his wife, his two daughters and son in law. There was also a major general and his wife, one Brigadier, two Lt Colonels, one Captain and one Lieutenant. The NORINCO itinerary covered seven days from 11th May to the 17th May 2009 - the last days of the war in Sri Lanka. (Prabhakaran was found dead on the morning of the 18th May 2009.)

The 10,000 sample was selected from all provinces including Jaffna Peninsula. 8779 people responded to the survey. 200 field officers participated in the survey. The aim of this sample survey was to identify the winner of the next presidential election.
The result is as follows:

Sarath Fonseka 56.4% Mahinda Rajapaksa 41.1%

A long time before you kids , found this blog, we were at defencewire, we argued why MR is suitable for presidency than SF even before SF declared his candidacy or even resigned from CD position.

We also predicted that SF will resign and run for presidency before any of the political pundits did it.

We came to the conclusion of supporting MR after arguing on things called Facts you might not know that word.

After that we have seen no reason why we should change our minds, in fact the months followed have strengthened our position on SF, from many of the factual disclosures and, communications of SF himself

In this blog there are lot of expats, who has no interest in party politics. It would be hard for political writers or people who are canvassing for MR to convince us MR is the best choice if there is a better person to the role.

You guys are trying to convince SF is a better choice. That is near impossible right now. Large number of educated people are already saying SF is a traitor. If he is not, then he really dumb. Either way he is not suitable to run the country. Therefore the clear choice is MR. Next time, try to put a better candidate for the presidential election. That way we can make the selection solely base on the merit of the candidate.

Moshe mentioned that if guys like SS comes along we would vote for them instead of MR. Here also before they come, they need to prove their political acumen. People should not try to get to the top without learning the ropes of running a country.

Personal Character demonstrated by past actions is the only thing we can rely on; not future promises from a demonstrably UNRELIABLE LIAR.

The only way SF can be redeemed in my eyes is if MR announces that SF was acting under MR's orders as a Trojan Horse in the UNF camp to lead them over the cliff, and therefore SACRIFIED HIMSELF in the Nation's Best Interest!

Sri Lanka #1 Tourist Destination says The New York Times

Split in Two in Frustration Dear Citizens of the Virtual Eelam!

1. Sri Lanka
For a quarter century, Sri Lanka seems to have been plagued by misfortune, including a brutal civil war between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil minority. But the conflict finally ended last May, ushering in a more peaceful era for this teardrop-shaped island off India’s coast, rich in natural beauty and cultural splendors.

Guests by the pool at the Galle Fort Hotel in Galle, Sri Lanka.

The island, with a population of just 20 million, feels like one big tropical zoo: elephants roam freely, water buffaloes idle in paddy fields and monkeys swing from trees. And then there’s the pristine coastline. The miles of sugary white sand flanked by bamboo groves that were off-limits to most visitors until recently are a happy, if unintended byproduct of the war.

Among the most scenic, if difficult stretches to reach, is Nilaveli Beach in the Tamil north. While a few military checkpoints remain, vacationers can lounge on poolside hammocks under palm trees or snorkel in its crystal-clear waters. Or they can order cocktails at the Nilaveli Beach Hotel (www.tangerinehotels.com/nilavelibeach), a collection of recently renovated bungalows with private terraces.

An international airport in Matara, on the island’s southern shore, is under construction, which will make the gorgeous beaches near the seaside village of Galle easier to get to. Decimated by the tsunami in 2004, the surrounding coastline is now teeming with stylish guesthouses and boutique hotels.

Unawatuna, a crescent-shaped beach a few miles south of Galle, may be furthest along. Higher-end hotels there include Thambapanni Retreat (www.thambapanni.biz), which features four-poster beds, yoga and an ayurvedic spa. The Sun House (www.thesunhouse.com), in Galle, looks like a place where the Queen of England might stay, with its mango courtyard and colonial décor. One stylish place tucked within Galle’s city walls is the Galle Fort Hotel (www.galleforthotel.com), a refurbished gem merchant’s house run by a couple of Aussies. — Lionel Beehner

Fonseka has agreed to autonomy in a merged NE - Weerawansa

National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa yesterday said that the Common Opposition had signed an agreement with the TNA with several conditions to support Sarath Fonseka at the forthcoming Presidential elections.

The signatories were Sarath Fonseka, Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe on behalf of the Opposition and R. Sambandan on behalf of the TNA, Weerawansa said.

The TNA parliamentarian Thurairajaratnam has disclosed the agreement signed between the two parties in an interview with the Wasanthan TV, he said. Thurairajaratnam in his interview had said that the Opposition has agreed to remerge the Northern and the Eastern Provinces, dismantle the High Security Zone, release the LTTE suspects in detention and grant an autonomous region for the Tamils in the North, Weerawansa said.

Top LTTE activist Rudrakumaran had appealed to the Tamil diaspora to uphold the Tamil cause and help bring bout a regime change in Sri Lanka.

Weerawansa said Rudrakuamaran had said that the Tamil Diaspora should adopt a new strategy and new thinking unlike in the past and make a fresh start.

Weerawansa accused the JVP of being traitors. He said that the JVP had opposed the Indo - Lanka Agreement in 1986 but today it was sitting with the LTTE proxies who advocated division of the country.

Weearwansa accused Ranil Wickremesinghe of trying to grant an ISGA (Interim Self Governing Authority) for the Tamils though the LTTE which advocated separatism has been defeated.

He said that the JVP was being funded by several Foreign missions including the US.

Tamil Nadu on the brink of bankruptcy: Jaya

ExpressBuzz.com
January 12, 2009

CHENNAI: Leader of Opposition J Jayalalithaa on Monday charged that the State was on its way to bankruptcy because of the wrong fiscal policy of the DMK government.

She said the State had a debt burden of Rs 90,000 crore and the government was paying Rs 20 crore as interest per day. Moreover, every newborn child in the State carries a debt burden of Rs 15,000.

Winding up the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, Jayalalithaa said the DMK regime between 1996- 2001 left the State to the AIADMK government with dual economic burden – budget deficit and debt trap. However, due to prudent fiscal management, the AIADMK regime created surplus revenue of Rs 1,951 crore in 2005-06 and the budget deficit stood at just Rs 2,251 crore.

In contrast, now the revenue deficit stood at Rs 1,024 crore while the budget deficit had shot up to Rs 11,824 crore, Jayalalithaa said and added that the DMK government was spending the huge borrowings on non-value creating commodities instead of investing them on increasing infrastructure facilities.

Further, the State had been spending the amounts received through loans on non-performing items instead of spending them on items, which would pay more dividends than the interest rate due on the market borrowings.

“While the income of the State is being wasted, the tax revenue collection has come down and the deficit has burgeoned manifold,’’ Jayalalithaa charged.
