Beyond 2009: The Butterfly Effect of National Security

2009 marks a remarkable point in SL history. It is an year of victory, triumph, and a certainty, with most vulnerabilities we faced as a nation deterred. We ought to live happily ever after, yet 2010 comes with more uncertainties and debate. Election heat is getting to its boiling point, with shameful betrayal and defamation. Forgotten and little spoken is the topic of national security today.

Yet the happenings have not left the topic barren. With lots of butterflies flapping their wings, we do not know when the category five may land upon us. While wishing our community a prosperous and joyful new year for 2010, this is an effort to look at the odds.

TNA Factor:

After the demise of Pussycats as a militia, the spotlight shone upon their political twin TNA, undoubtedly. Presidential Election extended this scenario. Both candidates have played Santa-Claus for TNA votes. And at least some of the official agreements contain segments that seem to threaten national security. Even if they turn out to be usual empty promises of Presidential Election, the General Election to be held immediately after, makes the promises more real. TNA will use their seats for bargaining.

However, TNA is set to prove that they're a synthetic alliance created in front of smoking AK 47 and they may fall apart into pieces. If this happens there will inevitably be lots and lots of active parties in Northern political arena, none gaining a majority of any kind. They'd sell their votes/seats at the best price they get for their variants of the same old demands. It may not be as rosy as it looks. Instead of one big federalist element there will be many little ones, and they may infest both sides during GE.

Nevertheless the diminishing of this biggest racist political movement in SL will be a welcome change. We need to move forward from elements of racism and make room for more generous and broad thinking political movements that represent one SL. Importantly, breaking up of TNA would make room for them to groom, if any.

That fallen Baton:

If such broad thinking non-racist movements fail to capitalize on TNA break up, it may make way for new Tamil militia. If TNA fails to represent Northern people, is there a political capacity in the rest to lead them? UNP is not in a position for any serious political discussion instead of providing political jokes. JVP who hinted as a good national level party, seems loosing whatever they had in the Southern regions as well. This leaves Northern Tamils with only option of SLFP, in the lack/break of TNA.

SLFP provides a hope right now. It already has some people such as Karuna [who may not be most preferred by them, but still a better choice than some unknown SLFP organizer]. I am predicting the possibility of some pussycat leaders appearing in SLFP lists in future. SLFP will provide a good non-racist political alternative for the Northern people, for few years.

But it is not enough. It needs a similar opposition as SLFP is the likely party in power. Lack of that may give opportunity for a new militia. This threat is quite high for next decade or so.

Until we have a certain picture on the Northern vote bases, and the direction of its flow, we need to pre-empt this possibility. It is a time to compare the golden years of late 2000s, in search of answers to what mistakes we did in late 70s and early 80s. How to use our military to diminish a movement in formation - that is the question for the defence establishments.

Pussycat-ospora, anger, revenge and hatred:

Anger and revenge was primarily the backbone of the whole havoc caused in SL by Tamil diaspora. More than Eelam they wanted to give us the biggest return, maybe hurt for the savage 1983, or maybe due to the superiority complex most of them seem to suffer from. And it ended up being a totally lost gamble, a huge waste of time and money of a million plus group of people. More anger has made them wanting to return to the same traits and give us a bigger blow. And they still have financial power to do so.

This is one more reason why a militia can be formed even in the death of the pussycat. If not for any other reason, diaspora cash-cow could be the prime reason for someone to create a fake "rebellion" against us. However, this seems to be an area which current defence/diplomatic establishments are tackling pretty well. We need to intense the acts. We should not rest until last active pussycat is behind bars.

Other side of the Pussycat-ospora:

While one part of them trying to give us the best blood bath possible, the other part is plotting the best political structure to make room for Eelam. The Trans- Notional Government and the corresponding elections are one segment of it. The minority forum held in Switzerland for all minority parties, is another. This alliance is highly supported by the INGOs, and many other foreign elements. Most of war crimes claims, and the defamation of SL are parts of this main plot.

Idea is to create a hostile environment for SL, and leave most minds ready to accept Eelam, should there be the slightest chance for it being declared. Also to push the GOSL to maximum in case there is some kind of negotiation.

Regrettably many local politicians including General Fonseka lately, have fallen into this plot. More dangerous will be if General looses campaign and finds life in Sri Lanka meaningless and flees to west looking for ways to revenge Rajapakses.

This is not an empty threat or a laugh-stock. In 90s when Wardharajah Perumal declared the N/E province as Eelam, [illegally] he lacked any formal acceptance from any part of the world. This was despite his capacity as the Chief Minister with [full] power of 13th amendment [although none gave him self-determination]. It would have given him good acceptance, had the world got prepared for the idea. Today's laid out foundations are for a future Wardharajah.

This is where we need to bring strong legal grounds to combat separatism. After 30years of separatist war SL is still entertaining the thinking, talking and organizing of separation. It can only combat separation by means of anti-terrorism. Separatists to date, foolishly took the same and hence got decimated. Yet we have no weapons to combat the peaceful version of separatism. This is a loophole we need to close soon, or the result will be regretful.

IDP turned Mentally Displaced:

IDPs are being settled. With them the multi million dollar topic [of NGOs] is gone. Yet the settling process looks hasty and a rash plan. Perhaps pushed into it by many such parties.

It is very important to handle them sensibly and delicately. More than the infrastructure and underlying needs, most of these people are mentally displaced, still so.

And that leaves all possibilities open. Most these people suffered in many hands, yet they may take it all from the GOSL. They may find their current lives not so filling and, in the slightest mistake, abandoned. Instead of working for their own future cum country's, they may work for country's destruction and eventually theirs.

In simple words the release was too early and primitive. In other words we need to make sure every plan we have to counter any bad formations among them, since they are very likely.

For racist politicians, for diaspora and INGOs, this bulk of ppl [together with other tamils in those regions] are the work horse. Every evil plot of the prior groups are made real by them. And for that reason they would invest their best to get these ppl lined up for their plans. Slightest mistake will be definitely highlighted in the process.

Govt should provide them all the needs and help them to get on with life and prosper. So far it looks good going. Yet the goals are still a significant distance away.

Not only the caretaking but also they should be monitored and closely spied. There is nothing wrong in spying. Today most western countries listen to Muslim circles day and night. We can do the same with them.

Mono-ethnic Enclaves, and unfair and preventive laws from Integration:

This is a topic discussed by likes of Moshe in many rounds. Needless to add, Multi-ethnic recolonization as our pals coined it, is an essence. Not only that the vast reserves of Wanni needs more people and it should be equally available for all Sri Lankans. Any laws violating that right should be removed, and challenged by means of basic rights.

As Moshe states, this is the best way to end racism. Yet they're late. This should have begun in parallel to IDP resettlement. Still never too late.

Devolu[natic]tion:

Most Australians whom I knew supported Federalism for SL, until when I told them "Hey you wanna divide an island in the size of Tasmania into so many states, ha?" Most critical reason why federalism does not apply to SL is the size of it. Very little countries there exist, whose states can be run across in a day.

Moreover it is impractical as it naturally leads up to the separation as many above mentioned forces work day and night to achieve it. Anything we mark by means of federal or any other race-based twin sister of it, will be simply another step for international recognition for eelam. And any power we grant such, is a road open to get there.

It is very clear that SL needs devolution. But most hurting needs are regarding administration and development. Not about defence and policy making. Devolution should focus these requirements. Smaller regions should be given more powers in administrating and developing their regions. Center should standardize all the policy and other critical issues including defence and should hold it under their control. Regions should be smaller than current ethnic barriers and should not have any ethnic basis.

Sadly, the lunatics who call themselves the professional devolutionists fail to understand this. In reality most such are rusted socialists who still read "Das Capital" to find best socialist ways of making love. We need to move out from here and get many "other"politicians into act. If we agree for Devolution we need to agree it all together and work hard to make it a healthy and safe plan.

Human migration and the millennium to come:

Sri Lanka is the dead end of a great human migration. Northern and Southern parts of India provided a flux of people who found nothing but great Indian ocean beyond this island. In recent millennium, Tamilnadu's population eruption has sent a lava flow of humans through to the island. It will keep on doing so within whatever legal and illegal frameworks of the day.

This means that eventually one day SL will be tamil dominant, theoretically. Today's world order saves us thanks to countries and visa barriers, hence making illegal immigration the only way. But there is no assurance that such structures will remain in tact for ever. In the millennial view this risk exists at large.

It leaves the Sri Lankans with a two way approach. Firstly be very open hearted. They should support any kinda integration of anyone into their fold. They should not base themselves on race, and the open and extended hands should embrace anyone who comes under their flag. Secondly they should be ruthless to anyone who's trying to pull down the flag.

And on this regards we need to learn everything from Israel.

In a summary; we need to address the following topics in this dawning 2010.

- Tamil racist politics: how to dismantle them
- Stop playing into their demands due to cheap political gain
- Banning Separatism
- Filling the northern political vaccum
- Increasing security of North and East. Establishing permanent camps and increasing numbers.
- Have an anticipative plan on combating terrorism at its birth.
- Taking care of IDPs, and providing them sustainable development
- Spying and monitoring the same
- Multi Ethnic Recolonization
- Combating illegal immigration and coast guard

As the new year brings a new president, these topics should be more significant when you decide on your candidate for voting. Whoever wins, these haunting questions will be nagging soon to be addressed. Failing which they'll take the nation back to 70s and 80s, making next decade bloodier than 90s.

And on the day when category five strikes, everyone will forget playing with the little butterflies flapping wings in their back yard.

Sarath Fonseka’s greedy intensions have weakened the government’s stand against separatists. He has just given racist Tamils to another flat form to gain more power and continue to fight for independence. MR is now forced to do things that were unthinkable few months ago.

MR’s short sighted actions paved the way for traitors to rise so quickly after their downfall. I curse SF for the treachery that he has committed against the mother land. He will have to pay dearly for the damage he caused very soon. This should be a good lesson and a reminder for MR to clean his acts altogether.

............
How Sri Lanka defeated terrorism

The island-nation fought it for 25 years, now attention is turning toward winning the peace.

Mahinda Rajapaksa
is president of Sri Lanka

After more than 25 years of combating terrorism, Sri Lanka finally achieved peace in May 2009. But the costs - more than 75,000 deaths - were high and the struggle arduous. To this day, few acknowledge the difficulty of defeating what the FBI had described as "one of the most dangerous and deadliest outfits in the world."

Although the world too easily ignores the importance of Sri Lanka's achievement, some of America's elected officials are starting to understand. A Senate Foreign Relations Committee report, issued last month, hailed our victory as "one of the few instances in modern history in which a terrorist group had been defeated militarily."

Sri Lanka's struggle is a victory for global democracy and demonstrates that a workable model exists for eradicating terrorism, a model from which the international community may yet gain valuable insight.

Now the hard work of reconstruction begins. We are redoubling our efforts to rejuvenate democracy across our country, revive the economy, and reconcile any differences. As the global community watches, Sri Lanka recognizes the need for transparency of action. Our aim is to deliver a prosperous and peaceful future to every Sri Lankan, whatever their race, culture, or religion.

MR Op-Ed in Philadelphia Enquirer
....continued....

After decades of trauma, we continue to deal with a humanitarian crisis in parts of the country and face many challenges in the transition to peace. America knows only too well the political challenges and economic needs that come with shifting to a post-conflict state.

Having overcome the terrorists, Sri Lanka undertook decisive measures necessary to ensure the peace. The need to temporarily house people from the conflict zone was born out of the need to stabilize the region and provide a haven for the displaced. Vast areas of the country that were destroyed by fighting and rendered uninhabitable because of land mines are now being carefully cleared and infrastructure restored, allowing our people to return in safety. Despite these tremendous obstacles, fewer than 100,000 of the original 300,000 displaced Sri Lankans now wait to return home.

We have demonstrated our commitment to and respect for human rights by ensuring freedom of movement in the temporary centers for internally displaced people. Sri Lanka intends to close all centers by Jan. 31.

But we must remember that the war did not just end lives; it decimated communities and destroyed homes. We believe a guaranteed right of return for every Sri Lankan affected by the conflict is critical to our goal of justice for all. Reconciliation will be a multifaceted task, and it is important to look at the many aspects of nation-building through a broad lens, rather than a narrow one.

In the last few months, we have heard from our friends abroad urging us to speed the pace of reform. We have listened to their ideas and have taken their concerns to heart. However, integrating and reconciling a nation in a post-terror era while ensuring a lasting peace, after nearly three decades of war, will take time.

Sri Lanka is part of the family of nations. Suggestions from other countries are welcome. But we need help as much as scrutiny. We appreciate assistance that enables us to find and eliminate land mines. But we also need increased investment, trade, and economic-development support. We have much to offer countries worldwide.

As we move forward, the world will see democracy in action with our Jan. 26 election. This will be a significant event in Sri Lanka's history and will encapsulate our goals of reconciliation by developing our political process. Encouraging the political engagement of communities who boycotted our last elections, at the height of the terrorist war, is a key goal to which we remain committed. As America understands so well, democracy is as much a process as it is an event.

The memory of terrorism remains strong. The deaths and destruction it caused remain indelibly etched into Sri Lanka's collective memory. But Sri Lanka will thrive because of the indomitable will of our people and more than 2,000 years of history.

I am confident that Sri Lanka, our island of unsurpassed natural beauty, diversity, enterprise, and, now, a hard-fought peace, will take its rightful place in the world. This could only have been achieved through the decisive action taken last May for the long-term benefit of all Sri Lankans.

Agree with Thusitha. Simply because someone was a great warrior and a patriot, it doesn't mean they can run a country. I have heard some ppl suggesting after MR maybe GR is a good candidate to run the country. But I disagree ! GR is a person who talks from his heart. A passionate soul. He will make a terrible President.

Mahinda is a rare leader who has a lot of good points combined. His shrewdness is by far the best trait that saved Sri Lanka !

BreathSL, that would be after another six more years time. That means GR would have almost 10 years of political experience. We have to consider about GR then. That is more than enough for some one to run for presidency of SL. But hopefully GR won't do it, because he might as well have to go through similar BS as SF.

breathe, thusitha,

1. IF SF agrees to the things i stated and correct his BS i will accept him. he played a big role in the war.

but this will NOT happen the way this MAD MAN conducts himself. day by day he becomes more and more mad.

can't figure out where this LUNATIC will end up!!

2. re: SS
no. we should not have such a barrier.

if good soldiers are allowed to become leaders bad soldiers won't come to the limelight.

i don't agree SL politicians have some skill which SS, etc. cannot cultivate.

3. MR is not that great. i'm disappointed at how DUMB he has become.

now he matches ponsekas 10,000 promise with 2,500, untimely release 1,000 + (more to come) after ponseka promised to release all terrorists, agrees to share power with tamils (today) after ponseka's BS.

how fcuking dumb???

he should not do these things.

and election related corruption is sky rocketing every day.

these are not the characteristics of a good leader.

4. but given the lunatic on the other side, ppl have no choice.

Also you may find supporters for Fonseka 'rothu buruthu' pitin on the net - but it's a vastly different scene in the villages.

He had a certain level of support from floating voters when his campaign started, but it has drastically gone down now.

So far there are 3 posts by me and Konappu Bandara:

Ananda-USA #1:

Thank You, Mr. President Mahinda Rajapaksa for bestowing a real, tangible peace upon the twenty two million people of Sri Lanka, allowing them to again reach for the glorious future that beckoned us at the dawn of independence in 1948. Sovereign Sri Lanka that shone as a model for emerging nations before the onset of this unhappy war, can now resume its march towards that hallowed national goal ... thanks to your vision, compassion, and courage. You followed in the footsteps of US President Abraham Lincoln who delivered the same benefit to the people of the United States nearly 15 decades ago by waging an unhappy war thrust upon him pursuing a greater, more honorable vision of nationhood. You have not only made a great humanitarian contribution by ensuring the welfare of all people of Sri Lanka, but also have rekindled hope in the hearts of people all over the world that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall long endure in the midst of murder and mayhem unleashed by monstrous terrorists supported by self-serving foreign organization and countries that only serve their own global agendas. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and may the Holy Triple Gem of Buddhism Bless and Protect you always!

Konnapu Bandara #1:

The tireless work of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to forge this victory not only benefited all Sri Lankan people, but it benefited all peace- and freedom-loving peoples and nations the world over, by laying to rest the flawed notion that democracies cannot successfully confront and defeat militant terrorism in their midst, militarily if necessary. Had the terrorists succeeded in their attempt to avoid defeat in Sri Lanka, it would have driven another nail in the collective coffin of democracies the world over; democracies fighting existential struggles against terrorists who exploit the very liberties afforded by the democratic form of government, to undermine and demoralize them and impose their will.

Ananda-USA #2:

When serial murderers who have AXED both parents to death come pleading for leniency in sentencing because they are ORPHANS, the best thing to do is to THROW THE BOOK at them. Many LTTE apologists demand love and kindness towards a group of psychopathic killers who butchered nearly 100,000 people in Sri Lanka in their effort to create a racist, apartheid, separatist state for Tamils-only called Eelam. In that quest they sliced and diced, hanged, shot, burned and blew to bits thousands of innocents, maintained torture camps in a vast Wanni Gulag, enslaved their own, kidnapped and brainwashed children for service as soldiers, ethnically cleansed vast areas of their non-Tamil communities, and yet have the affrontery to wail as victims all over the world. They form a network of largely illegal immigrants who engage in every criminal activity, extorting funds for mayhem in Sri Lanka, undermining the gullible nations that provide safe havens. These people are two-faced: perpetual wailing victims to the external world; terrifying monsters to ordinary people of Sri Lanka. ALL of Sri Lanka is the homeland of ALL of its people, not part by part, but as a whole. Sri Lanka is a multi-cultural multi-ethnic, multi-religious land without separate Bantustans for each community to live in magnificient and deadly isolation. ONE Nation, ONE people, ONE shared destiny, endowed with EQUAL rights as a birthright, with each person subject to an EQUAL responsibility to DEFEND and PROTECT this Resplendent Land against all of its ENEMIES, from within and without.

Well, it seems my last comment here has made few ripples here and there. What I meant is That Mahinda did not read or handle Funseka correctly from latter part of 2008. May be Gotabhaya’s interference create the trouble for MR. However, As Deshapaluwa pointed out correctly MR should have kicked Funseka out after Muhamalei debacle or even before. I agree with Sam’s snake theory also. I am sure if MR could go back to the beginning of 2009; he would handle things differently.

Well, it is water through the bridge already and the most important thing now is to beat the bastard in his own turf. However, MR should not try to please separatists. Abolishing HSZ and letting LTTE goons free is not good for SL’s future. If MR stands firmly against traitors on both sides; he will shine.

Excerpts from a good article by well known writer Gunadasa Amarasekara
Link: http://transcurrents.com/tc/2010/01/in_my_view_sarath_fonseka_has.html#more

In my view Sarath Fonseka has been contracted to perform three main tasks:
Firstly, to defeat Mahinda Rajapakse at the presidential election. Divide the Sinhala vote and get the Tamil vote in Fonseka’s favour has been the rationale- the modus operandi . In this the JVP wearing the bogus nationalist mask has been entrusted with projecting Sarath Fonseka with his battle field halo as a Sinhala nationalist and thereby divide the Sinhala vote.
The task of getting the Tamil vote has been taken over by the UNP which has good relations with Tamil racists. Sarath Fonseka is presented to the Tamil voter as a born-again great humanist. Sarath Nanda Silva speaking on behalf of Fonseka has promised these Tamil racists a remerged North and East if they were to vote for Sarath Fonseka. They seem to be very confident of this strategy.
The second task expected of Sarath Fonseka is to garner the necessary information that could be used as evidence for war crimes or human rights violation in order to bring the President and the others before a war tribunal. This plan seems to be working very successfully at the moment. This is why with all that persuasion from Mangala Samaraweera and the JVP, Sarath Fonseka could not retract his charge against Gotabhaya. If he does so, he will be violating the terms of his contract. This is the simple truth.
There is yet a third task expected of Sarath Fonseka. This may well be after the Presidential elections which will be won by Mahinda Rajapakse. Sarath Fonseka would be asked by his Western masters, to contest the General Elections with his new party – consisting of the JVP and the breakaway groups of the UNP and SLFP. Riding piggy-back on the breakaway UNP-SLFP vote base, the JVP would secure a fair number of seats in the new Parliament. With no party having a majority to form a stable government, a sate of anarchy would set in soon providing a background for a strong man to emerg

Could the same strategy have been employed by VP as well.

As an example, VP, in cahoot with foreign countries organizes a fake surrendering of their political wing. Make sure every one is aware of this. Then at the last minute kill them while they were carrying white flags. This would have been the only way he could take revenge from the brave soldiers who ass fuc**ed him.

Thusitha,
I disagree; VP’s daughter Dwarka, her brother and mother were not murdered by VP. They were also not carrying arms. We have to be truthful and fair. No point of trampling on dead people.

I was not referring to VP’s elder son but 11 year old Balachadran. VP is a heinous criminal and a terrorist of the highest calibre but his younger children did not deserve the punishment they got. Somewhere, I saw dead Dwarka’s photograph and as a Buddhist; I felt pity about it. However, no point of discussing these matters now.

Bro Ananda,

There, I have made my contribution too for “How Sri Lanka defeated terrorism” discussion as follows:

OaO Asithri
Well done President Mahinda Rajapakse! Sire, you overcame formidable odds to defeat the heinous LTTE terrorists and for that deed alone we patriotic Sri Lankans are ever deeply indebted to you. While LTTE terrorist supporters who are living abroad (judging by comments, many who are commenting here) may scream bloody murder, roll on the ground, do "human rights" somersaults, what matters is WHAT WE SRI LANKANS asked for - i.e. TO RID OUR LAND OF TERRORISM - which you delivered as promised. Yes, it is time that some of the nations facing protracted terrorist wars (such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan) and their "masters" (such as the US, UK, NATO etc.) took a page or two from the manual for study on how humble Sri Lanka won its own war against terrorism (the most brutal kind per FBI). President Mahinda Rajapakse, sire, you are indeed our "Maharajano!"

I am talking about Nadesan's death. International community is trying to link war crimes charges against GR/SS using his death. VP wouldn't have cared less about Nadesan's death. Therefore he, with the help of NGO, INGOs and the west could have orchestrated the whole thing.

from sources close to ponseka family, there will be one or two family beak-ups in the ponseka family!!!

danuna and apsara may be splitting SOON!!

sarath and anoma will atleast seperate. anoma had said she will only stay with him until aparna's marriage stuff is over. but looks like she is leaving him earlier.

'election stress' (i call it uncontrolled hatred) has made ponseka very unreasonable with family.

arresting randy who is a very close friend of danuna has put a lot of pressure on danuna. randy's family and friends are on danuna's back to get him out soon by confessing to allegations.

danuna is screwd by ponseka not to give in and wait till jan 27.

danuna's business marriage to apsara was on the rocks from the start.

it seems ponseka ends every argument with "wait till 27th" and a couple of filthy words.

meanwhile neighbours reported about 50 hindu priests with srange attire coming in and going out of ponseka's house.

can't we postpone the PE by another week????

ponseka bubble has burst!!

Moshe Dyan said...

thusitha,

these MFs are very cunning. they have another plan.

they ask why nadesan's wife was killed. although nadesan may have carried his usual pistol his wife never used to carry weapons.

IF we accept she died due to an "accident" and others were "killed" by us, we are stuffed.

then they are going to bring charges against ETHNIC CLEANSING against us arguing that nadesan's wife was sinhalese and we didn't kill her (as she died only due to an "accident") but killed the tamils only.

what really happened was when civilians left we started hammering. tigers didn't surrender. they tried to escape to the mulaitivu jungles which is connected to a bigger jungle that can take them to batticaloa which is famous for illegal migrants getting into boats bound to australia, etc.

Moshe Dyan said...

this is why ZERO acceptence of the "execution" theory is necessary.

knowing all this ponseka said, "gota ordered to kill them".

what a fcuking motherfcuker is he.

but it is still worthwhile to get him to our side after the election or kill the sakkiliya. otherwise he will tell these BS stories to willing listners abroad out of hatred.

we MUST force him to return to the fold or kill him.

we have to do it whether we like it or not.

Moshe Dyan said...

the best thing is to convince the public that we accepted him back, get him to our side even temporarily and then bump the MF off.

that will minimise the political fallout. we can say he was killed by UNP-TNA-LTTE terrorists bcos he joined his old team (for a day!!).

but looks like he is not going to turn back anytime before the election.

1. suicide bombers going off at a gathering of the 13,000

2. mosquito borne diseases

3. the boat tragedy (my all time favourite)

arrange 100s of fishing boats for them in the coast. spread the rumour that LTTE-diaspora has arranged to rescue them all to canada and boats are waiting.

create havoc in the camp and let them escape. bloack all ways except the way to the coast where boats are waiting.

plant time bombs to go off once the boats are in high seas.

Agree. Gun/explosive toting maggots should have been liquidized and fed to the hogs.

Now this begs the question, WHERE THE FUCK WAS THE SRI LANKA ARMY LEADERSHIP when we needed it to make such a decision?

Of course, the Motherfucker was holidaying in China with his family (wining & dining and seeing the Great Wall of China with the family in toe while the boys were dying of limbs being blown off!) and any tactical/strategic leadership that we had during the crucial period came from the brave, intelligent field officers and Gota.

Then the Motherfucker comes and takes credit for bagging the ducks. Not only that, he want to take sole credit for it!

Difference = 180,786
Take 5% out of Ranil and add it to Mahinda for winning the war and take 1% out from MR for loosing JVP support and add it to SF.
New position:
MR – 5,073,598 (52.89%)
SF – 4,519,919 (47.1%)
Difference = 553679 (5.7%)
It will be difficult for SF to get over 550,000 Tamil votes. However, if he managed to do that with TNA support MR will be in trouble!

Lanka: Indian origin Tamils with Fonseka

By P K Balachandran
January 12, 2010

NUWARA ELIYA (CENTRAL SRI LANKA): Barring the plantation workers suporting the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) led by Arumugan Thondaman, Sri Lanka’s Tamils of Indian origin seem to be strongly with Gen.Sarath Fonseka in the run up to the January 26 Presidential election.

Following the recent decision of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), a North Eastern Tamil political combine, to support Fonseka, there is a new enthusiasm among the Indian Origin Tamils to support the retired General against Mahinda Rajapaksa in the Presidential race.

Political observes in the tea plantation area of Nuwara Eliya in the Central Province told Express on Tuesday, that they wculd not be surprised if even Thondaman defected to the Fonseka camp before the election. At any rate, as per past practice, he would shift to the victorious side after the election, to continue to be in power,.they say.

SUSPECTED LTTE LINKS

The reasons for the current political behaviour of the Indian Origin Tamils are as follows:

Hundreds of Indian Origin Tamils were arrested and jailed without charge when the Rajapaksa government’s hunt for the LTTE reached a high point in 2006 and 2007.

The Sri Lankan police force, which is overwhelmingly Sinhalese, could not make a distinction between Indian Origin Tamils and the indigenous Tamils who considered the LTTE as their sole representative. For the police, all Tamils were one and the same and suspect.

Hundreds of Indian Origin Tamils were kept in the high security prison for terrorist suspects at Boosa in south Sri Lanka without charge. It was due to a court case filed by some political leaders that about 300 of them were released.

In 2006-2007 many Indian Origin Tamil traders were abducted, either on suspicion of having links with the LTTE or for ransom. Some military officers were also involved in abduction for ransom..

ECONOMIC WOES

Indian Origin Tamil traders in Nuwara Eliya complained that income tax officials were tough and demanding with them, while being lenient with the Sinhalese traders. Small scale vegetable farmers complained that they were not given fertilizer at the subsidized rate as per the Rajapaksa government’s policy document Mahinda Chintanaya..

“Since the difference between the subsidized rate and the market rate is really wide, we go to a certain place in the Mahiyangana area to buy the fertilizer at a cheaper rate in the blackmarket there. Some influential ruling party politicians run the blackmarket,” a trader said.

Ananda-USA said...

Lanka: Indian origin Tamils with Fonseka

....continued....
A potato grower complained that the Rajapaksa government’s policy of importing potatoes from India to bring down the price in the market had hit the Nuwara Eliya small scale protato growers, many of whom were Indian Origin Tamils.

Tea plantation workers have small plots of private land in which they grow vegetables to supplement their meager income from tea plucking and coolie work in the plantations.

“The high price at which we are forced to buy fertilizer, jacks up the selling price of our produce and drives them out of the market,” said a.potato grower.

It is declared government policy to give estate workers small plots of land to enable them to cultivate a commercial crop and earn extra income. But very little has actually been given to these people of Indian Origin, the Up Country Development Association has pointed out in a recent letter to President Rajapaksa.

TRADITIONAL LINKS WITH UNP

The Indian Origin Tamils and the estate workers have traditionally supported the United National Party (UNP). And the UNP is backing Gen.Fonseka in the coming Presidential election. It is therefore not surprising that the Indian Origin Tamis are also backing Fonseka.

The UNP is traditionally strong in the Central and Western Province and Colombo district. These areas also have a large concentration of Indian Origin Tamils. It therefore makes sense for Indian Origin Tamil parties to align with the UNP to win elections and secure seats in parliament.

This time round too, political observers expect the CWC to switch from Rajapaksa’s side to Fonseka’s so that it can get UNP’s support in the April 2010 parliamentary elections.

DEFECTION TO FONSEKA SIDE ALREADY ON

A switch by the CWC during the Presidential election is said to be on the cards because some CWC leaders like R.Yogarajan, N.Satchithanandam and Sathasivam have already pole-vaulted. The Colombo-based party, Democratic Peoples’ Front , is already with the UNP.

President opens Bandaragama-Panadura Bridge and Pannipitiya flyover

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa inspected the Bandaragama-Panadura bridge linking Hirana in Panadura and Kidelpitiya in Bandaragama this morning and ordered it to be opened for public transport from today.

The two-lane bridge is 125 meters in length and 13 ½ meters in width. It has been constructed at a cost of 757 million rupees through a loan from Australia.

The bridge will benefit the people who use the ferry and help to ease congestion on the Galle Road from Panadura to Colombo. The bridge provides a shorter route for those who travel from Galle towards Maharagama, Homagama, Jayawardanapura and Kandy Road.

President Rajapaksa also opened the flyover bridge constructed over the Pannipitiya railway track, for public use today.

The 120-meter long, 4-lane flyover was built as a solution to ease the traffic congestion on the High Level Road.

The Ministry of Highways has constructed the flyover at a cost of 140 million rupees to minimize traffic congestion in Nugegoda, Maharagama, and Kottawa.

Minister Nandana Gunathilaka, Reginald Cooray, Secretary to Ministry of Highways Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda were present at the occasion

Asithri,

Thanks for posting this Link. It is so important that I am posting it in full, if only to support my contention that there are many good Patriots among UNPers; it is the party leadership that has been hijacked by anti-national elements.

In our criticisms of the UNP, we should attack their anti-national LEADERS, NOT the RANK-AND-FILE MEMBERS who have idealogical and family tradition reasons for supporting the UNP.

IT IS NOW TIME FOR UNP-ers to put the Motherland ahead of Politics and vote for MR in the PE.

Then, they should TAKE BACK THE CONTROL their GRAND OLD PARTY from the current anti-national leadership and contest future elections as a LOYAL OPPOSITION wedded to Sri Lanka's best interests, not those of separatists and foreigners.

On matters of National Security and National Survival, they should SUPPORT the Government, as oppositions do in many other countries in the West, notably the US and the UK.

Nation FIRST, party politics SECOND!

Great grandson of UNP founder calls to save the party

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 12, Colombo: Vasantha Senanayake, the great grand son of DS Senanayake, the founder of the United National Party (UNP) on Sunday (Jan 10) called upon all true UNPers to save their party from anti national forces.

During a TV interview telecasted on state-owned Independent Television Network (ITN), Senanayake said that the party which is now running under Ranil Wickremasinghe's leadership is not the United National Party founded by independent Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister DS Senanayake in 1946.

"The party's symbol Elephant and the colour Green were decided at our home. The idea of the party was formulated at Botale Walawwa and it was founded at Woodlands House. My great grandfather became founding leader of the party and the first prime minister of independent Sri Lanka," he said.

Senanayake, speaking of the current state of the party said that the party has been losing its policy focus since 1977.

"Since 1977, the UNP has been deteriorating from every aspect and distancing itself from the founding policies. It has become a party governed by only one policy, that is to bow down to foreign powers without questioning," he said.

"The party has faced the worst degeneration in this aspect during Ranil's leadership," he added.

Mr. Senanayake further said that the party has betrayed the country today and all his family members are looking for an alternative to the UNP.

"As a person with DS Senanayake's blood, I am dead opposed to the shameless betrayals that UNP does against the country," he said.

"What they do today is clearly a betrayal. They have come to an agreement with the Tigers, signed a secret pact with the TNA, agreed to all of their conditions …What are they trying to do to our motherland?" he asked.

Ananda-USA said...

Great grandson of UNP founder calls to save the party

.....continued....
The party has been controlled by a set of morally degenerated people, Mr. Senanayake said referring to the current leadership.

"We can see clearly that this election campaign is running on personal agendas. It is just a campaign based on hatred and vengeance," he added.

"Now we are all confused … there is an elephant trunk, a handle of a bell and also a tail of the tiger in the UNP today," he commented.

"My grand father (Dudley Senanayake) who was elected Prime Minister for three times in Sri Lanka, once said that he would never betray the country even for Sakvithi Rajakama. Unfortunately, we can see this Ranil Wickremasinghe is a person always ready to betray the country even for petty political advantages," he said.

Finally, Mr. Senanayake requested all true UNPers to protect the party, from the anti-national forces that control it.

"This new party that operates under the name of the UNP is not the real UNP , to protect the party oppose Ranil's betrayals against the country. Give priority to the motherland in this election, re-elect President Mahinda Rajapaksa to defeat scum that destroy the UNP," he said.

if we can get 1% of that 26% to vote for MR, that will give MR's votes a 3% boost from where it was in 2005. (not on the total)

if its 2%, the boost is 5%.

govt should have a plan to CAST these votes one way or the other.

if you look at sinhala majority areas, voters turnout is lower than nuwara eliya. this is unacceptable.

on election day free bus services should work to transport batches of voters who would otherwise not vote.

electorate organizers must make sure that it happens.

Rana said...

Moshe,

Explain the following:

‘if we can get 1% of that 26% to vote for MR’
Which is 0.26% from the total and how could it make 3% boost in MR’s?
It makes only (0.26+50.2)/50.2 = 0.005 or 0.5%

Even if you add 1% from total votes to MR; it will be
(1.0+50.2)/50.2 = 1.0199 = 2%

Either you are totally wrong or I am drunk already.

Moshe Dyan said...

rana,

total reg voters = 14,000k
74% = 10,360k
MR's votes (as per last election) = 50%
votes = 5,180k

1% increase in the turnout which is assumed to go to MR

75% = 10,500k
addition = 140k

new total = 5,180 + 140 = 5,320k
increase % = 140/5180 = 3%

as i said, it is NOT on the total.

on the total it is a 0.67% increase.

Moshe Dyan said...

rana,

it shows that a BIG difference to MR votes can be made by getting reluctant voters to vote.

election campaigns are only about willing voters!!!

my calculation also covers the other exciting possibility of non-violent fradulant votes which is fair game against a bastard like ponseka.

Moshe,

Got it; the way you presented makes the confusion.

BTW there was a good thought provocating article by Prof. Kumar David; my one time power system teacher.

He says; TNA decision to support SF is not good for Tamils. Instead he says; Tamils should vote either to Wickramabahu or Sivajilingam. That way Tamils could show to the whole world that they are rejecting both main candidates who were leading the war against LTTE.

However, I think; Colombo Tamils will vote to two main candidates and SF will get major share due to Mano Ganeshan and TNA factor. This could happen with Jaffna Tamils too but wanni Tamils may not follow TNA advice but vote either Wickramabahu or Sivajilingam. MR will get majority from Eastern voters.

Any way, It seems; this election will be a complex one to predict. Division of Sinhala vote base is the nemsis for MR and key to SF’s success.

Agreed, by crooks or hooks; SF has to go down as the worst traitor of Sri Lanka for the first decade of 21st century.

However, mind you MR is allowing his brothers and relatives to siphon the countries wealth badly and it will continue for next six years. On the other hand there is no guarantee that SF will be a saint after the 27th!

They have made countless contributions in this blog as well as DW unlike the crap you dish out here. You seem to dislike both SF & MR but only talk about the wrong doings of MR. To me you are die hard UNPer who found a lifeline after SF came into the picture. People like you who try to promote SF in a subtle way are deadlier than the ones who openly support SF. In my opinion you have crossed the 'limts' with your latest remarks.

It is always good to have ppl with opposite ideas in the blog but not the ones like these who says one on the face and means something else. I think it is the time for the Admin to act on this.

I dindt know what Ananda's comments were about, yet this shows how we are different from them.

We do not suppress their right to express, yes we attack them with facts , but we dont go to personal attacks or demand removal of comments.

So I ask you again , post your comments as a main blog, if Rana can write a coherent answer with no personal attacks or profanity, we will post that also as a main blog, and show why they are wrong and we are right.

-----------------------------

On the other hand if this was about RW and UNP, I think it is a very important debate that we should have.

RW is the only remaining rallying point of the anti sinhalese forces, if he is not theere the anti sinhalese forces will disintegrate.

Remember he is holding on to the party leadership by undemocratic means.

If he is not their Hakim and his racist party has no platform. Hakim has no base with the public, he couldnt muster many votes in the eastern election, yet he is capable of swinging the UNP towards his racist demands.

Another such factor is the TNA, we saw in the Jaffna elections people have rejected their extreme views, yet they enjoy disproportionate powers , only because of RW, who is ready to entertain these rejected extremists for ideological and personal reasons.

If we want to see a good future for our country we need to defeat extremist, RW is the only factor that is holding them together.

After the defeat of terrorism we should be targetting the anti sinhalese, extremist.

Therefor it is a disservice to the country if you do not republish your comments.

Why we should not vote for Sarath Fonseka at the Presidential Elections?
(Part 1)

To begin with he has no viable political manifesto. He is there to eradicate corruption. Corruption is as old as the beginning of humanity and that cannot be eradicated through political means. There is no one country in the world where there is no corruption, let alone political corruption. Sarath Fonseka is groping blindly for political recognition by waving a blinking, out moded slogan to attract attention and fish the voters willing to bite the bait of the slogan I fight to end corruption.
Sarath Fonseka was a party to end terrorism, but to end corruption he will fail as many before him had tried and failed with the same line of argument. Therefore, his political slogan is not convincing enough to have him elected as the President. Therefore to vote him to end corruption would be a waste of a precious vote.
Sarath Fonseka to fight against corruption should understand where corruption begins, be it political, administrative or else. Corruption is rooted in desire, possessiveness, aversion, anger, hatred, jealousy, and delusion. Therefore to end corruption all those negative human emotions have to be removed. As long as they are not removed corruption will continue to exist until the end of the world.
The Presidential election is to elect a political leader to lead the Nation. When the Nation to be led is politically fractured, the elected leader should be capable of bringing together the fractured Nation to make a whole, through conviction of progressive development to satisfy the whole.
Mr.Mahinda Rajapaksa is a proven leader, who took the Presidential reins to traverse a perilous path entrenched with dangerous terrorism to lead the people away from disaster to safety, towards the green pastures of peace and progress.
Sarath Fonseka was only an element used by the President Mahinda Rajapakse to clear the passage to reach the objective of peace and progress to which he was leading the Nation. As such Sarath Fonseka has no proven ability to lead the Nation. Therefore, Sarath Fonseka given the reins of President will not know where to lead the Nation.

Nandana said...

Why we should not vote for Sarath Fonseka at the Presidential Elections?
(Part 2)

The Path to reach the objective is further away, and the perils are not yet over, Mahinda Rajapakse had very ably driven us through the fires of danger, and it is still not the time to change the reins from the firm hands of the President Rajapakse, to hand it over to an amateur. Therefore, every vote counts for the President Rajapakse to lead us to the chosen object towards which he can find his way through the experience he has already gained.
Therefore, to vote for Sarath Fonseka is to hand over reins to lead us nowhere and perhaps to bring the Nation back to where President Mahinda Rajapakse commenced his perilous voyage in 2005, back to division, calamity, terrorism and disaster.
It is a well worn saying that you know the person from the company he keeps. Since Sarath Fonseka came forward as a candidate for the Presidential election, the company he keeps does not speak well for him.
Mano Ganeshan and Sambandan of the TNA represent the defunct terrorists. Rauf Hakeem is a man who signed a MoU with Prabhakaran to become a part of Prabhakarans Eelam if ever it was to be set up.
Yogarajan who broke away from Thondamans CWC to join Sarath Fonsekas election campaign is an opportunist. Ranil Munasinghe is a weak leader who gave parts of north and east to Prabhakaran under his infamous CFA.
And Mangala Samaraweera is a failed politician scheming behind scene to lure politicians away from SLFP to UNF without much success. These are the companions of an apparent future President. And who would like to vote for a man in such company to lead the Sri Lankan Nation, freed from the ruthless terrorist, by the determination and the correct political leadership of the President Mahinda Rajapakse.
Sarath Fonseka has proved from his acts and pronouncements that he is not apt to lead our nation as its President. He has divulged army secrets and government confidences. He is not second to a proverbial bull in a glass shop. He has shown that he is not tolerant, by being angered by criticism leveled against him, promising his critics bones and dirt to lick after his victory. Such a man does not deserve our vote.

Nandana said...

Why we should not vote for Sarath Fonseka at the Presidential Elections?
(Part 3)

A President of a country has to have the confidence of the people. He should first be responsible to the Political Party that he leads. But Sarath Fonseka has no such responsibility to a Political Party. He is sponsored by a hastily gathered discordant Political Parties.
They have come together to pay a grudge against the incumbent President and his brothers. Sarath Fonseka and his companion s do not propose any development projects for our country, which has just been delivered from thirty years of suffering under a ruthless group of terrorists. Their only project is a promise to fight against corruption.
Why should we elect a President to eliminate corruption when we have a President who had shown the metal of which he is made, by eliminating terrorism by intelligent direction of the Government Armed forces for the purpose? He has already promised that the country will be developed in stages, until it will be in a position to compete with any other country in the world.
Mahinda Rajapakse has shown that he is a man who keeps his promises. He kept his promise to eliminate terrorism, and now he promises more plans of development and some of them are in the process of achievement. Therefore, it is to Mahinda Rajapakse that we owe our vote, so that in his next term of office he will take us further on the path of progress.
Sarath Fonseka is a good soldier. He has proved himself to be a good army strategist. But in war the commanders know of the enemy and know where to direct their guns. But in politics the enemy is not known. They are many, and varied. They come with different faces. The experience in the army does not make a commander a good politician to fight against these political enemies. Therefore we should not waste our vote on Sarath Fonseka to make us his guinea pigs to make him learn politics.
Sarath Fonseka is not responsible to a Political Party. Therefore he will not be responsible to the people who will vote for him. He is only a common Presidential Candidate of a group of discordant political parties. The only reason of their getting together is the call to abandon executive powers of the President.
Sarath Fonseka not being responsible to one political party and not responsible to the people who voted for him, once elected may shun the discordant politicians that sponsored him to have his own way, and may use his power as the Commander in Chief to bring in a military rule.
Is that what we want? NO
Therefore, no self respecting Sri Lankan should cast his vote to Sarath Fonseka at the Presidential election

e.g. arousing more hate in ponseka is OK

2. hate arousing stuff are NOT OK.

e.g. behaving like idiots amidst the public, street fighting, public display of vengence/hate/over partisan nature

the ponseka campaign is only about 1. it is not likely to change.

Sarath Fonseka believed LTTE could be beaten even before Mahinda was elected as the president in 2005.

He also knew how to beat them and also had a plan before Mahinda became president in 2005.

That is why Gota persuaded MR to appoint SF as the commander of SLA early.

Gota bridged the gap between president and defence forces in excellent manner.

MR gave an almost free hand to Gota and SF to run the war and supplies were arranged without fuss.

MR, BR and the some ministers in the cabinet worked tirelessly on Indian and International fronts tackle foreign interference and pressures during height of the battle.

Sarath Fonseka delivered the goods as promised.

He is a real hero, foremost architect and the executioner of the decimation of LTTE. Nobody can deny it or say otherwise.

However, buck should stop then and there. Now he is trying to reverse them all or can deliver real peace without corruption or abuse of power. I don’t think SF can do anymore good to SL.

Let Sri Lanka help Haiti struck by 7.0 Earthquake in a BIG WAY!

Two issues:

1. Are SL Peacekeeping troops safe?

2. The GOSL should seize this opportunity to simultaneously A.help our troops there, B. help Haiti andC. Generate some positive international publicity to offset recent bad publicity on war crimes charges.

The GOSL should offer to send a whole division (say 6,000 troops) to Haiti on a short term basis. The GOSL can arrange for troop transport and equipment from some other country, such as the US, with food for the troops to be sent from SL.

A military field hospital to treat the wounded should be included together with a portable water purification system, but our primary contribution should be a large contingent of troops highly trained and skilled in emergency operations to dig people out of the debris.

Any comments?

Sri Lanka says their UN peace keepers are safe after Haiti quake

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 13, Colombo: All 950 Sri Lankan troops engaged in the United Nations peace keeping mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) are safe from the massive earthquake that struck the Haitian capital Tuesday afternoon, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told the reporters in Colombo.

According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude 7.0 quake struck 10 miles southwest of the capital Port-Au-Prince.

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping said earlier Tuesday evening that contacts with the UN on the ground have been severely hampered as communications networks in Haiti have been disabled by the quake.

The military spokesman said they were able to establish the communications with the Sri Lankan troops and the troops had been away from the capital when the quake struck.

"Up to now I've heard 50,000, I've heard 30,000. Let's say, it's too early to give a number," Preval told broadcaster CNN, conceding that any sort of official estimate was extremely difficult. Tuesday afternoon, and issued an appeal for world assistance. The damage was centred in and around the capital Port-au-Prince, home to about 1.9 million people.

Figures for the number of dead remain murky as the government tries to assess the damage.

Speaking on CNN, Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said: "I believe that we are well over 100,000" dead, based on the number of buildings that have collapsed.

The UN mission in Haiti said Wednesday that the country suffered "massive and broad" destruction from the devastating earthquakes which may result in large number of casualties.

Fifty to 100 UN staff remained unaccounted for a day after the earthquake, said Vicznezo Pugliese, spokesman for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). Separate reports say the dead included soldiers from Brazil, China and Jordan.

The end death toll could amount to the largest number of deaths ever for any UN single mission. UN officials warned that the situation remained fluid because the quake and its aftershocks had cut off communication lines between UN headquarters in New York and

the mission in Haiti.

Pugliese said hotels, hospitals, schools and the national prison in Port-au-Prince all suffered extensive damage. Electricity was interrupted and water was in short supply.

"Casualties, which are vast, can only be estimated," Pugliese said in a statement made available at UN headquarters in New York.

The missing staff had worked in the main MINUSTAH office, a six-storey concrete building which collapsed. Normally, between 200 and 250 UN staff worked in the main office building but many may have left before the quakes struck.

Ten other staff were still unaccounted for who worked for UN agencies like the UN Development Programme, some of whom were in hotels.

Hundreds of thousands of Haitians slept in the streets Tuesday night after the earthquake struck, fearful that their houses would collapse. UN soldiers and police patrolled Port-au-Prince since the earthquake to maintain order and security.

The UN Security Council held a minute of silence before it met Wednesday and issued a statement expressing "deepest sympathy and solidarity" to Haitians killed or affected by the catastrophe.

The 15-nation council also voiced support for the government of Haiti and called on UN members to assist the country in rescuing the survivors.

John Holmes, the top UN coordinator for humanitarian emergency, said there was no "reliable information at the moment".

The earthquake with magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale struck the impoverished Caribbean nation Tuesday right before 5 p.m. local time.

Holmes said a Chinese search and rescue team had arrived in Port-au-Prince. There are 119 Chinese police in the UN mission in Haiti. Taiwan was sending 55 rescue workers and two search-and-rescue dogs, Taiwan officials said earlier Wednesday.

US and other country rescue teams were scheduled to reach Haiti in coming days.

Just as MR is not qualified to the army commander, Fonseka is not qualified to be president.

Chaps, our ancient kings knew the value of developing life giving irrigation works in the country. Reading the article below should make every patriots heart swell with pride.

Under President Rajapaksa, the Irrigation Department could complete 90% of the planned projects during the period 2009 and few are at the stage of completion. The main projects are, Deduru Oya, Rambukkan Oya, Veli Oya, Veheragala, Veemedilla reservoir and Kekiri Oboda.

Out of these projects the Veheragala and Kekiri Oboda tanks are newly built reservoirs. The Veheragla tank project is completed and the Kekiri Oboda project is underway.

During the recent past, except rehabilitating few tanks, no government has undertaken to build new tanks. Building a new tank is not an easy task since it involves many matters.

Rebirth of hydraulic civilisation in Sri Lanka

Cheers!

Any patriot reading below I am sure will be transported back to the days of our great sovereign lord, Maha Parakramabahu.Heady days, chaps!

The newly-constructed Veheragala tank will be inaugurated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on July 11th, 2009.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 2,600 million.

The Irrigation Department was able to complete the work spending Rs. 2,000 million saving Rs. 600 million. Since the entire labour force was from the Department, the estimated expenditure had been slashed.

Private contractors were not invited, Resident Engineer L.S. Suriya Bandara said.

The entire expenditure was borne by Government coffers.

The water is to be supplied to the tank from Menik Ganga through a 19 kilometre feeder canal. With the abundant water supply, 5,000 farmers in Lunugamvehera and 750 farmers in Kataragama will be able to cultivate both Yala and Maha seasons.

Due to the lack of water and constant drought, the farmer community were abe to cultivate only one season, Bandara said. The annual diversion of the tank will be 50,000 acre feet per year.

Cheers!

Do Internet poll results have any effect on Sri Lankan voters?

The simple poll on LankaPage up to today resulted 53% for the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa, 42% for the common opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka and the rest for 'Other' candidate.

When we analyzed the geographical distribution of this result, ONLY 2% of the votes came from Sri Lanka. 32% was from Canada and 27% from the USA and the rest from other parts of the world.

We know that we have certain influence on our families in Sri Lanka, but most of us expatriates not being Sri Lanka citizens do not even have any voting power or not in a position to make the trip to Sri Lanka to vote on the 26th.

If that is the case does this poll result (or any other internet poll result) predict the winner of 2010 Presidential Election?

We see many other Sri Lankan web sites carry polls on the presidential elections asking about "What is the best policy for the country?" There are "FaceBook" groups for both Rajapaksa and Fonseka with 30k – 40k followers. Even if they are all possible voters the numbers are out of over 14 million registered voters in Sri Lanka.

Can any one of those FaceBook fans change the mind of Siripala's or Sumanawathie's or Chandrasekaram's living in the rural areas of Sri Lanka? How many people in the rural areas have access to a computer let alone having internet services to visit FaceBook?

According to World Bank data the internet usage in Sri Lanka is only 5.7%. Compare that number with the 72.35% of USA or 79.41% of UK where internet poll results really can have a significant effect on the people's vote.

At the moment thousands of e-mails are going around the world. Some of them are very nasty and some others are total fabrications (Kele Patthara). No body is seriously paying attention to them. They are just good for entertainment not for serious discussion.

Aren't we wasting our time and resources in this type of campaigning? It is all a fad folks!

On the good side someone can make money out of these fads predicting the glorious outcome on the poll day on behalf of their candidate.

I know for sure, my mother, who is 78 years young and uses "Skype" with video to talk to me, will NO way change her mind for this election because of my poll.

[Do Internet poll results have any effect on Sri Lankan voters? ]

No way, my friend!

This election will be decided by the vast masses of ordinary Sri Lankans, living in Sri Lanka, on the basis of what they know to be the truth, and what is best for them.

It is on that basis of the perceived self-interest of ordinary citizens that I predict a LANDSLIDE victory for MR.

The internet influences only a very small fraction of Sri Lankans who have internet access. At this time, the internet is primarily a means of influencing global internet-enabled communities, both Sri Lankan and foreign.

The polls we hear of are largely skewed and biased by the various groups who field them, and the people who preferentially visit those sites. They only reflect the thinking of those people, and cannot predict the outcome of the election.

For that, you need a broad-based poll conducted in Sri Lanka among the ordinary citizens of the country.

Rana,

You are now living up to who I think you really are, and can be.

I accept your offer of peace with great joy, for I was never at war with you, and have done my level best to not retaliate despite severe provocation.

I have always recognized you as a Patriot, and made many overtures to you to put your mind at ease, as I am doing now as well. We Patriots should stick together .. for the battle should be with Sri Lanka's enemies .. not between us.

You have taken a very significant step in the right direction. I would now urge you to take one more step forward, and hold out your hand of friendship to Asithri and to Priyashantha as well, forgetting all that is past. All of us used angry words in haste fighting for what we thought was right, but all of us are good patriots and decent people.

Also, please know this: it is those who fight with passion that turn up to fight for the country, by your side at the battlefront as well. The meek, the gentle and the solely intellectual folks are largely distinguished by their absence at the battlefront; I have personal experience of this in many other settings. In Sri Lanka, the people who sacrificed their lives for our country were largely not the genteel folk, but the most courageous and aggressive of our young people. Without them, where would we be as a nation? For this reason, in all of my activities at these blogs, I ONLY wish that people be Patriotic, not mirror images of myself, for that would not only be counter productive, but boring as well.

So, write a post to Asithri and Priyashantha as well .. you would be very surprised I think by their response .. and all of us Patriots would be better off as a result.

A different thought from Chinthaka Senaratne:

Political commentators seem to have run out of superlatives when attempting to describe the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapakse. Academics have joined the fray, falling over themselves to award him honorary degrees while Business Schools have attempted to analyse the crucial elements of his leadership style.
All are in agreement that his leadership is unprecedented in history and has no parallel elsewhere.

Even for keen observers of history it is difficult to identify a suitable mould from which, it may be assumed, the President may have been cast. It is only if we delve into the realm of fable that we find a parallel – that of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

The essential elements of the story are the same – a plague of vermin, a desperate people, willing to try anything to rid themselves of the menace, a solution from a magician who later demands a price too high to pay and finally robs the townsmen of their future – their children – as the final price.

MR is a man of great ability and innate good sense who is leading Sri Lanka towards a great future.

Let us give him the time to build a glorious future for Sri Lanka upon the foundation of security he has already laid in a few short years.

All this unseem;ly haste in demanding magical miracles from a man who has already delivered so much so soon is very perlexing, especially when we as a people were willing to tolerate incompetent fools happily for so long in the last three decades.

Let us be tolerant and forgiving of this great best leader we have had, and give him the time and the opportunity to raise this country to unprecedented heights.

also he takes care in attacking his opponent's PLANS than the opponenet HIMSELF.

this is a very exemplarary way of a leader.

OTOH gonseka only spits HATE. that is OK at the initial stage but at the mature stage of the election it is not OK.

Moshe,

If you look at the recent history of Sri Lanka politics, you will see that majority of Tamils and their so called leaders failed to grasp Sinhala psyche accurately. This was evident from 1960s. Their leaders let them down badly. Specially Amirthalingam and his wife followed by Prabhakaran. Their profound south Indian mentality and ignorance to look beyond so called traditional home land concept brought them many miseries. Those who escaped to west due to violence, unrest or otherwise have realised this but not ready to advocate others properly; instead they are very keen to spread hatred towards Sinhalese main stream.

Even today they failed in their part, Tamil leaders have not yet made anticipated conciliatory gestures that might ease government concerns and foster a genuine dialogue. Because of their one sided thinking; they have lost many opportunities in the past. Now they have become mere puppets of Diaspora think tanks and continue to follow the same old agenda which failed has failed many times.

The only way forward for ordinary Tamil folks is to abandon their short sighted leaders and be Sri Lankans to unite with majority Sinhalese to develop themselves as well as the country.

Rana said...

Continued:

What Tamil leaders should have done is to join with Sinhala main stream and support the incumbent president to eliminate mistrust and differences for their own benefit. Make the “UTHURU WASANTHAY” a real success with the help of Mahinda regime. That would take ordinary Tamils folks to an unprecedented new height of development in all sectors.

Instead once again they are following the failed agenda by supporting SF and trying hard to divide the country. I don’t think they will ever learn.

Moshe Dyan said...

yes. but it is not seemed to be happening.

we cannot build a country based on changing hearts an changing minds. instead it must be done on a FIRM basis that will eventually make everyone happy.

that is called COLONIZATION (with or wothout ethnic integration which MUST be left to the people.)

the influence on tamil ppl is TOO MUCH to change them from racist politics to national politics.

1. HUGE pressure from BLOOD RELATIVES of the diaspora to continue to follow racist politics.

2. huge pressure from grandfathers, fathers, elders to KEEP FOLLOWING racist politics.

3. enormous pressure from TAMIL MADU to keep following racist politics as in tamil madu.

while MOST indian states vote for national parties like IC, BJP, ICP, etc, tamil madu ONLY votes for racist parties with a "T" or a "D".

sometimes you have to go against these crazy wishes, fantasies, dreams of ppl to serve them.

anyway USING this racist tendency than trying to change it is BETTER at this election!!

lol!!

(this is why national politicians are also to be blamed for this!!!)

Moshe Dyan said...

we must give credit to fonseka.

so he plays into TNA racism.

MR tries to FIGHT TNA racism.

MR proposes an UPPER CHAMBER of parliament which is appeling only to 10% of TAMILS who are REAL MODERATES.

not only they will be defeated but also will be ridiculed. then the 10% drops to 9% at the following election.

for MR, the best cause of action is not to fight TNA racism now but to make use of it to HELP 90% tamils in north east to BOYCOT the election claiming that it is CHINGALA ONLY.

i've been harping on this theory.

you CANNOT win over tamil racism.

Errrr…there is a serious problem with this analogy. And that is:

1) The Pied Piper did not develop the town & country, feed the populace and achieve World Bank commendations for “development while fighting a plague-war” while he was battling the vermin.

2) In fable version, the Pied Piper liquidated the vermin for good. In the real case, there are a plenty of vermin living in yonder-lands and waiting to come back/send proxies to re-start the horrific plague. Hence, in this case the town’s proven anti-vermin leader must be given time to eradicate that residual threat; if not the vermin will re-infest in no time.

Sri Lankan arrested in Britain for running on-line crime network

ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 14, Colombo: Britain's Serious Organsied Crime Agency (SOCA) today arrested a Sri Lankan native Renukanth Subramaniam, 33, for operating an on-line crime network that allowed criminals to exchange stolen credit cards and other information stealing millions.

A judge at Blackfriars Crown Court ordered to remand Subramaniam after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud and five counts of furnishing false information.

Subramaniam pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of conspiracy to defraud and five charges of furnishing false information.

Subramaniam, who was born in Colombo and became a naturalised in the UK in September 2002, was accused of running a secretive website called "Facebook for fraudsters" where the criminals can share the stolen information.

He was reportedly a senior figure in the operations of DarkMarket, a cybercrime site for thousands of identity thieves, credit card swindlers, and login data stealers. The site was later infiltrated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the U. S, and SOCA of Britain. The site was disbanded in October 2008.

Tamils safe to return home, says Sri Lanka

SRI Lanka has pledged that the five Tamil refugees on Christmas Island who have been deemed threats to national security can return to their homeland without fear of death or persecution.

The promise came as the Rudd government, which says the Tamils will never be granted visas in Australia, searched for a country willing to resettle them, and an expert on the Tamil Tigers said it was not surprising one of the five rated a security risk by ASIO was a woman.

Romesh Jayasingha, the permanent secretary to Sri Lanka's Foreign Affairs Minister, told The Australian that fears the five would be at risk if they returned home were misplaced.

"Sri Lanka is a democracy - it is governed by the rule of law," Mr Jayasingha said yesterday.

"If they have committed any offences, there will be a due and equitable process."

Mr Jayasingha rejected claims by refugee advocates that the Sri Lankan government's mistreatment of the Tamil minority was the reason the five, along with hundreds of their countrymen, had fled to Australia over the past year. "There is no persecution in Sri Lanka," he said. "All citizens are equal before the law."

The Australian revealed on Tuesday that four of the 78 Tamils rescued by the Oceanic Viking last October, including a woman with two children, had been deemed security risks by ASIO.

The four flew to Christmas Island after the 78 Tamils negotiated a deal with the Rudd government to end the four-week stand-off. There they joined a fifth man, the woman's husband, who was also barred by ASIO.

Shanaka Jayasekara, a lecturer at Macquarie University's Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism, said the Tigers did not distinguish between male and female fighters.

"They had special regiments of women in their combat operations," Mr Jayasekara said. "Women were specifically used for suicide missions. The Rajiv Gandhi assassination was conducted by an LTTE woman."

Immigration Minister Chris Evans said on Wednesday there was no suggestion the five Tamils were hardened terrorists.

Refugee Council president John Gibson called on ASIO to give reasons for its rulings.

A Tamil born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, he is thought to have entered the UK illegally at 16 accompanied by his aunt and uncle, brother and sister. He was granted British citizenship in 2002.
Although he took out £800,000 of fraudulent mortgages on three houses in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, and Tadnworth, Surrey, he never lived in them but stayed with friends in Wembley and Ilford, Essex.

Or at Times Online Credit card fraudster ran an ‘online shop for criminals’

In between delivering pizzas he used an internet café in Wembley, northwest London, to create the site that was described by investigators as a “shop window for criminality”.
Fraudsters could learn how to steal personal information from banks and individuals and buy the equipment to do so.

The video is not clear. The voices are not clear. The figures are also not clear except for the accuser's figure.

I hope that audio of the discussion with Ravi or Malik will come out and be seen as clear evidence for impartial people.

But if it is a set up by Malik, then Malik is also putting himself in ftont of the jaws of law.

On the othere hand I cannot believe that the Government is foolish enough to stage something like this fradulently.

My judgement is mostly this is an athe caught case of SF as he was athe caught so many times.

Example:

Then

He ordered it Gotabhaya cancelled it.

Similarly he put the blame of HIcorp corruption on Illngamage Upul.

For fairness it should happen.

Violonce, vote rigging by SF is very much possible.

I considr Ambalangoda security arrangment as a military coup of a short duration. This changed my mind from being SF sympathiser to MR supporter. Since I dug some information and speculated on behaviour patterns.

Psychos are are very consistent being irrational and delusional and inconsistent.

So I am absolutely certain, SF could be an Idi Amin or Pol Pot or STalin.

He wanted to get rid of economists. Then he will get rid of doctors, teachers engineers etc.

My salute all the people who are seeing who SF is.

Oh sorry moshe, you've brought the news b4 me.

Anyway, this tells you how several prominent ppl suddenly found GOSL full of corruption and wanted to free teh nation from corruption. That claim itself was a part of a major corruption scandal involving bribing.

He's running a huge budget even now granting it to buy ppl at will. Even Maha Raja [so called] didn't buy [so alleged] ppl at this high price. However he had all his govt funding to take away [so alleged].

Question is where this money of SF coming from?

Don't we see a missing source of income?

Who are the hidden sponsors?

What do they want in return? Ppl don't invest money like sending soap bubbles.

How many possible sources of income do we know of, whom can do this kinda mega investments on a running candidate? Not many, but likes of Pussycats, Kothalawala, Rajarathnam, few INGO and other international crooks. None means any good.

These questions are of paramount importance, as they not only show a further corrupted cross section of the man yelling against corruption, but also they threaten national security at a great deal.

Now now... this Fonseka is an interesting chappie. No respect taken for his grand planning for war, yet as a politician he is a total contrast for planning.

Following bit by a frnd of mine in a diff forum gives you some insight.

He'll be giving Sambe at Rs 40/= per Kilo
At the same time he ensures higher price per Killo of paddy for the farmer.
No taxes on fuel...
So, from where the does he find money for all these magic ???
Corruption money ....but this is also not realistic as what ever the money gone into MR pockets (400 billions?) is gone ...
To save corruption there should be projects: zero projects ...zero corruption ..zero saved.
Aney manda Sarath !!

If at all Govt is planning to bring forward that rape victim, now is the time. This will provide Gonseka ample time to give another similar 'articulate' reply.

Jaathiye Paahara Balla Ravi Karunanayake is babbling in front of the camera threatening to sue everybody for exposing him. This man needs an express ride out of politics altogether and then the prison.

I would like to wait and see how this latest debacle of Funseka camp will unfold!

Sarath ta thada wela

To know the reality of anyone, you gotta see when they talk about themselves. It is easy to criticize other's act, yet hard to organize yours.

Rana said...

Yes, his language is not suitable for presidential candidate and also proves some allegations about his angry outbursts and physical attacks to minor employees.

Sam Perera said...

Indeed Rana, the former SLA Lieutenant Illangamge speaks much better than Fonseka. I wold say that Fonseka can pretty well match my all time favorite Mervin.
